Summer Music Rocks If you live in or visit Southport you know there is no shortage of talented local musicians. t’s Summer in the south! We’ve been waiting almost all year to finally feel the warm weather. Well with it comes mosquitoes and no-see-ums, but the good definitely outweighs these little pests.

A Day in the Life

Christine Martinez opens up about her music career, her labor of love STORY BY LISA STITES

I

t takes a lot of work to make a local band successful. It takes regular rehearsing, mastering new music to keep audiences entertained, buying and maintaining the right equipment, setting up and tearing down equipment, and booking gigs. It’s real work. But for at least one local band, providing the soundtrack for a fun night out is also a labor of love.

Christine Martinez sells real estate with Margaret Rudd & Associates and she works at Southport Trading Company.

She also sings and plays guitar with The Christine Martinez Band and is half of the duo Hoover and Martinez. In The Christine Martinez Band, Martinez is joined by Kevin Rogers on guitar, Frank Jernigan on drums, Tom Daniels on bass, and Ronnie Weinstein on keyboards; the band describes itself as having its roots in rock ‘n’ roll, blending Americana with a classic country sound. Martinez teams up with Jamie Hoover for the duo group.

“I love it. I love performing. I love singing with my band. It’s the payoff.

Yes, we are all looking to make a little bit of money, but the payoff is the performance,” Martinez said.

The band recently performed at American Fish Co. in Southport, and Martinez was pleasantly surprised at the size of the crowd for early April.

But she said she loves playing when friends and family are in the audience.

“I thrive on it,” she said. “It’s a struggle to sing and perform where nobody knows us and nobody cares.”

Martinez said. She added that when they play for a new crowd, her bandmates reassure her, telling her to just do her thing. “I find myself trying to win themselves over,” she said of audiences not familiar with the band.

Martinez began playing and singing for audiences in the early 1990s in her hometown near Boston, Mass. She lived in the Outer Banks for a while and then in the mid-1990s, she moved to Wilmington and joined what she called a “real band.” She later took a hiatus from music for family, but once her children were a little bit older, she said she called friend Guy Phillips — he had been encouraging her to get back

into music and she told him it was time.

“It was a fun time to get going,” Martinez said. “Southport was starting to have a sort of scene where people were seeking out live music.”

The Christine Martinez Band has been entertaining local audiences for about four years or so now. When Phillips became ill, various guitar players filled in until the current lineup came together. The group rehearses about once a week when preparing for the season. Band members work on their parts at home, so when they come to-

gether, they’re ready to put it all together.

Martinez said when they’re getting ready for the season, they work on new material.

They also perform original music that she writes.

When it’s time to perform, a couple of band members start showing up a couple of hours before the show. Everyone is there about an hour before, and together they set up all of their equipment.

“I think that one thing that this band has going for it is, is that I try to put on a show. I try to be entertaining and be

fun and watch,” Martinez said. It takes a lot of training to sing, dance and perform for a whole show, and though she said her vocals take a beating, Martinez said she thinks it’s what people like to see. “No matter what the level of talent you’re dealing with, honesty and sincerity are what makes something work,” she said.

After the show, while audience members make their way home or on to the after hours venue of choice, the band spends another hour working, breaking down and packing up all the equipment.

“You’ve got to rehearse, put the effort in, have the passion for it, you’ve got to have the equipment. You put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it,” Martinez said. “We try to put effort into it and make a little a bit of money.”

Booking gigs also takes quite a bit of time, and Martinez said it’s difficult to break into the next level of the music scene. They try to play as much as they can while balancing making some money, family and day job schedules and taking care to not over saturate the local market. Martinez said the band is known for its diverse song list. They have gigs scheduled in Wilmington and North Myrtle Beach, and are picking up more private events as well.

“Every time someone sees us, we end up with another gig,” Martinez said. She added that they’re hoping to pick it up a level and get hired for more gigs, like playing at fairs, town concerts, etc. To see where The Christine Martinez Band is play-

n their 8th annual “Dentistry from the Heart” event on Friday, May 3, the dentists and staff will provide free dental care for over 200 patients!

On a first-come, first-served basis, the services offered will include free cleaning, filling and extractions.

To date, Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry has donated over $375,000 in free dental care to more than 1,500 Brunswick County residents through this annual event. Community Relations Director Jackie Pappas, noted that “support from the business community for this event grows each year as does the line of patients beginning in the wee hours of the night be-

fore the event,” and that “our goal is for every patient treated at ‘Dentistry from the Heart’ to feel special and welcomed.” Support from volunteers as well as the business community helps to provide the best possible experience for the clients.

Parade and Ceremony set for May 27 STORY BY AMI BROWN

hat better way to celebrate those brave men and women in the armed forces than a Memorial Day Parade and Celebration. The parade will be travelling down Howe Street in Southport and end at the John N Smith Cemetery to contrinue the service. Please mark your calendars and experience this moving event and special tribute.

The Memorial Day Parade will start at 10:30 a.m., Corner of Lord and Tenth Streets convening at the John N. Smith Cemetery, Leonard Street for the Memorial Ceremony at 11 a.m.

At 2 p.m., Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay Street, Southport, the Southport Junior Woman’s Club, with the

Life After High School Local musical hits all the right notes STORY BY LISA STITES

W

ho were you in high school? Were you a cheerleader? Were you involved in student government? Marching Band? Or were you someone you’d like to forget? Do you even remember, and does what happened in high school even matter anymore?

Local theater group Ghost Light Productions will tackle these questions head on with its upcoming show, “Is There Life After High School?” The show uses vignettes with dialogue and songs to re-examine the high school experience, and the actors all play multiple roles.

Though the theater group is a new one, audiences will see familiar faces onstage, as the actors have performed in other local productions. Director and choreographer Cal Chiang and musical director Michael Stringer, both with extensive experience in theater and music locally and elsewhere, are leading the production.

This show brings another new twist to the local theater scene — the musical is being sponsored by the St. James Service Club, and the Club will donate the proceeds to programs that support children and the arts in Brunswick County.

Lynn Dutney, President of the Service Club, said this is the first time the organization has sponsored an event such as this. Chiang is a neighbor of hers, she explained, and he approached her about

getting the group involved.

“It was a different and unique event, and the Service Club is always looking for different things that appeal to people throughout the community,” Dutney said.

She said she is looking forward to a fun, lighthearted event that will let people go back in time and reminisce about their younger days.

Chiang said he asked Dutney about the Service Club sponsoring the show because he knew how much the Service Club does to support Brunswick County programs.

“I thought I would like to do something to give back to the community,” Chiang said. There is such a need here. Up north there were so many opportunities for kids, and not so much here.”

The Club has approximately 335 members, and has donated $1.6 million to Brunswick County nonprofits and scholarships.

As far as staging the show in the Community Center, Chiang said he’s planning on having the stage in a semicircle, with the band placed behind it.

Club vice-president Geri Margin said they’ll try to make it a Broadway-like experience, with selling refreshments before the curtain goes up and during intermission.

The show will run June 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the St. James Community Center.

The show is open to the public, and doors will open at 7 p.m. both nights. Tickets are available at Ricky Evans Gallery and at the St. James Community Center on May 6

and May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Chiang said his brother-in-law had worked on a production of this show in New York and suggested that he do it as well. He said he thinks the material will resonate with a lot of people.

“I think the demographics of our area will relate very well to this show,” he said.

SHOWCASE Dennis Walton

Local rocker with a heart of gold STORY BY CARLA EDSTROM

W

hat started as a young boy’s love for rhythm turned into a humble guitar master’s lifelong admiration and dedication to making great music. Dennis Walton, born and raised in Southport, is admired among local musicians as one of the best guitar players around. I met Dennis about five years ago while I was singing at the Amuzu Theater in Southport. Dennis was sitting in as lead guitar for the show while his band was on a short hiatus.

He was kind, generous and of course he could play that guitar like no other. He is a master at his craft, and it shines through in his playing and his gracious demeanor is just the icing on the cake.

Dennis was born and raised in Southport in the late 1950’s in a house filled with music. “Music has always been something I have done,” he said. “My mom played the organ and my dad played harmonica,” he said. “I had a cousin who would come over sometimes and play guitar and jam. I actually didn’t start out as a guitar player.

I was a drummer from a young age,” said Dennis. “In grade school, my teachers would be talking and I was supposed to be sitting there thinking. But I’d get two pencils together and start beating on stuff trying to get a rhythm together. And every time I heard anything I could imagine a rhythm to it. You know, like windshield wipers, and find a song that goes with that. I couldn’t concentrate on anything.

I still even listen to music totally different.

It’s hard for me to listen to music like normal people. I take it all apart.”

Southport was a very different place back then before everyone decided to retire here. It was a small town where you really knew everyone, and everyone knew your business. “I was born in that little hospital,” laughed Dennis. “My daddy worked at Sunny Point and back then it was wide open and anyone could go there. We had no idea how important it was out there. To us, it was just where our dads worked. So we spent a lot of our time out there when we were kids. Tebo Rogers was my dad’s best friend and he also worked out at Sunny Point. He was an incredible guitar player. He played just like Chet Atkins. Tebo would invite me to play drums with him when I was 8 years old. He was absolutely

my biggest musical influence. He helped me with everything. When I got older I got to play shows with him playing guitar and that was a big thrill,” said Dennis.

“From the time I was 6 years old listening to Tebo play guitar, I was just enthralled with it. My teacher in school asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up and I remember drawing a picture of a black guitar and I said I wanted to be a guitar player in a band,” he said. “I kept telling my parents I wanted a guitar and I didn’t get an allowance, but my dad said ‘how bad do you want it?’ Well, I wanted it bad.” So, Dennis’ dad gave him a $2 a week allowance with the stipulation that he saved half of it to pay for the guitar. “The guitar I wanted was like $25, so I saved almost enough. Then I remembered that it was my mama’s birthday coming up and I asked daddy if he would take me to the store cause I needed to buy something.

And he said ‘I thought you were saving up for a guitar,’ and I said it’s mama’s birthday and I got to give her something. With tears

in his eyes, he said ‘go ahead I’ll take you to the store and I’ll buy that present and we’ll order your guitar.’ I just made noise with that first guitar but I loved it!”

Dennis worked from the time he was 11 years old and by the time he was 16, he owned 6 guitars, 2 sets of drums and 5 fender amps. “I worked all the time so I had the money. And I had some money to spend,” he said. “So, Tebo took me and dad to get an amp just exactly like his. We went all the way to Myrtle Beach and I had $500 in my pocket that I saved up to buy that amp. And it was $500 even. The guy had opened up the store just for us ‘cause Tebo had some pull there. So, I’m walking around the store and I see this black and white $200 Epiphone guitar, and it spoke to me!” Tebo worked a deal with the store owner so Dennis could get the amp he wanted and also the black and white Epiphone guitar for $540. “Tebo negotiated that I get wheels and cover and extra sets of strings and for the amp and a cable. I got this amazing deal and I felt like the

SHOWCASE king. So once I got all that, then I really set my sights on learning how to play.”

A pivotal point in Dennis’ music was when his band won the battle of the bands in Wilmington. Winning that led to many opportunities. “We won the amateur division and were only a few points away from the semi-pros. We put the band together just to play in that competition,” said Dennis. “So when we won, we got prizes from Tapco, Peavey and Sure, and then you had to do ads for them,” Dennis explained. “It was like all of a sudden bam! Here you are and everyone wants you to play,” he said.

“For that competition we had to play like four songs and we didn’t know but five, and two of them I wrote,” Dennis laughed.

“They did it outside on the river and there were thousands of people there. We were the only band out of Brunswick County.

We won and it was on TV about us and in the newspapers and everybody was calling wanting us to play. But we only knew like 5 songs,” Dennis laughed. “There was this guy at the beach that really wanted us to play at his place, and I didn’t want to tell

him we didn’t know more than five songs.

So I said, ‘man we don’t have a PA system.’

He goes, ‘so how much does something like that cost?’ I had no idea, so I said $1500, maybe. He wrote me out a check for $1500 and said ‘go get one,’” Dennis said. “I talked to the boys in the band and said ‘we done run out of excuses. We’re gonna have to get it together.’ So we got together,” he said. “The drummer and bass player were still in high school. So we got the band together and we played a lot all over Wilmington, Oak Island, Southport and Myrtle Beach.”

Dennis took some time off from playing here and there to work other jobs and support his family. At one point he worked within every aspect of the business. “I booked bands for a little while. I booked a lot of bands out of the House of Blues,” said Dennis. “There was a while where I didn’t play much. I just did production work and played and I worked for an ad company. It was cool because I got to book people that I used to listen to on records, like southern rock bands Molly

Hatchet and Blackfoot and actually got to be friends with them. You’d hear stories that you don’t read about. I was close to Blackfoot’s drummer Jackson Spires. We were really close. He’d call the house and the kids would answer and he would talk to them for like 15 minutes. He was just like that.”

“I also used to teach guitar for Brunswick Community College Southport campus and I also taught at the old police station on Oak Island. I never even went to college myself or ever had any guitar lessons.

They had just opened the college annex in Southport, and they gave me a room once a week and I would teach young kids how to play. They were all like 13 years old, and I would let them play. My son Joey and his friend Mike Mitchem and other local kids all came to learn guitar. They didn’t want to play the blues. They couldn’t stand the blues. All they all wanted to play was Nirvana,” Dennis laughed.

Dennis refers to himself as a Blues based old rocker. “I grew up on Bad Company, Deep Purple, and I’m a huge Three Dog

Night fan. My mama was a big Elvis fan so I grew up loving Elvis, And of course drummers Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Sandy Nelson,” he said. “My parents got me a cassette player when they first came out and bought me some cassettes like The Carpenters which I love Karen Carpenter because she was a drummer. They also got me another cassette they thought was Johnny Rivers but it really was blues guitarist Johnny Winter. And once I heard that I went oh no,” Dennis said. And the rest is history.

His current band, The Dennis Walton Band, is a very popular local blues-rock band. His son Joey Walton plays bass in his band as well as Bob Collins on the drums and Ronnie Weinstein on keyboard. Dennis also plays in the band The Blues Kings, which consists of fellow guitar player Daniel Guetschow, Collins, Weinstein and bassist Kevin Rogers. He runs the weekly open mic at the Lazy Turtle Ocean Grill on Oak Island. Dennis is currently recording and hopes to have out a CD of his own music by next fall.

Get creative, but be sure to anchor your new movement habit with existing habits if you want it to stick.

5. COUNT YOUR STEPS Using an activity tracker or pedometer to track your steps is a great way to get you paying attention. You can set a daily goal, try to beat a previous day’s count, challenge a friend, or simply just have a reminder that you haven’t moved much on a certain day.

Whatever way you use it doesn’t really matter. The simple act of owning one and using it has produced an increase in user activity by 26.9% in recent studies. It really works!

6. TALK AND WALK Meeting up with a friend to catch up? Why not catch up during a neighborhood walk or a long walk down at the beach. Calling a friend or family member to touch base? Make the call on your cell phone and chat as you walk. Keep your relationships and your heart strong, while you burn up some extra calories!

7. MIX IT UP When you go the traditional route of working out to burn your extra calories, keep in mind that mixing up your mode of exercise as well as intensity

will provide more bang for the buck.

This means that instead of doing a 30-minute walk on the treadmill, you would be better off doing 10 minutes on the treadmill plus 10 minutes on a bike, plus 10 minutes on the elliptical.

This also means that you should vary the intensity as well by changing the level of resistance and speed throughout each of those 10 minutes. This applies to any workout you do…mix it up for a greater caloric demand both during and after the workout.

Remember, at the most basic level, if you don’t change your eating at all from what you do now…but you burn an extra 500 calories per day than you do now…in just 1 week you will create a 3500 calorie deficit! And that is the exact amount of calories it takes to lose 1 lb of fat. Now take that formula and consistently follow it week over week for 6 months. That equates to 26 lbs of weight loss. Not bad for a bit of movement each and every day!

BIZ Q&A Boutique Blossoms

Victoria Rose Boutique embraces roots STORY BY KASS FINCHER

T

hough they’ve recently closed the storefront at South Harbour, the boutique Victoria Rose will live on with an online shopping group for their customers. Owner Casey Pate opened the store on Small Business Saturday in November 2017 and has decided to go back to her roots, marketing her quality clothes and accessories on the Victoria Rose Boutique Shopping Group.

Named for her now three-year-old twin daughters Sarah Victoria and Sadie Rose, the store gained a loyal following over the past year, recently winning a Maggie Award from this magazine’s readers for “Best Retail Customer Service.” Pate describes her vision for the store. “The first year was crazy,” she says, “with a lot going on with my family and getting the business going.

We wanted to provide a great selection of products, with nothing over $50 and a huge plus-size collection.”

Prior to opening the storefront, Pate had worked for a multilevel marketing company focusing on leggings. She brought an understanding of how to market online, including offering pop-up boutiques to build community awareness. She realized she could do her own store with an expanded product line and better prices.

Pate also had a vision for the type of environment she wanted to create. “We always wanted to be there for the customers; we wanted to have kind of a ‘hangout’ where people could come, meet up and visit as well as shop. We chose that location at the harbour, a place that didn’t have too much traffic and provided a place to mingle and enjoy the area.”

Though her loyal customer base was growing, Pate’s small business, like others in the Oak Island area, was challenged with the impacts of a hurricane and bridge closing last year. After giving it much thought, she decided to concentrate her “love and full attention” on her 3000+ member shopping group on Facebook. “I figured there was no point in time when I would have over 3000 people in my store,” Pate relates. “You can answer people in real time on Facebook. And I can work from home.”

Besides the twins, Pate has two sons – 10-year-old Liam, 15-year-old Kamryn – and with husband Logan traveling three months at a time for work, the flexibility an online business offers this young entrepreneur makes sense. She is currently making the transition and staying in touch with her cus-

tomers. “A lot of our customers were upset,” she says, “but I’ve assured them we will be out and about in the community; it will just take a little while.”

Having marketed online in the past, Pate knows how to address her shopping group’s needs. “I ask four questions,” she says.

“What’s your bust size, how big are your arms, what’s your pants size, what color do you not like? With those four questions, I can dress anyone. I also try to provide a safe place to ask questions and get opinions from other women in the group to help them choose a special look. It’s meant to be a real community.”

Pate is also working to make the shopping group easy to browse and purchase from. “It is a work in progress,” she relates, “with photos of items being organized into albums, showing the correct sizes, a description and price. To buy something you just email me with your size. I send an invoice through Paypal and I have a local shipping price of $4. Orders over $75 ship for free.” Keeping the page’s products fresh is important as well. “When we order it’s in small batches,” Pate says, “so there may only be six to ten of each item. Once it’s gone, we order new products.”

Leggings are always the most popular items, with VR charging $15 for one pair or two for $25. “We also found a brand of jeggings, the jean leggings,” says Pate. “I think I wear them almost every day now. They are the most comfortable things; they look like jeans but hold everything in very well, it’s like a denim material, but holds its shape really well. Most people like the yoga band, a narrow elastic band which can fold down. I also have the high-waisted version, which I like because they stay up so well.”

Knowing the importance of keeping a presence in the community when there isn’t a storefront, Pate has plans for new popup boutiques in the future. “Karen Taylor at Taylor’s will offer leggings at her restaurant.

We’ll be doing popup boutiques out and about in the community, so if you want to

see things in person, you can do that. I just did the Oak Island parade with my children; we were selling leggings out of the back of the van.”

Pate’s love for fashion and helping women style themselves comes out in not only her business but sometimes in random public encounters. “We show people how to style things, like taking long leggings and making them short. Or how you can use rubber bands with dresses – I carry rubber bands everywhere. I will dress people anywhere, I’ll say ‘oh my goodness,’ here try this, let me help you,’” she laughs. “People really appreciate it; they say I never thought about doing this before. You can take this one thing and make your look so different.”

Since there won’t be as much face-to-face interaction with her customers, it’s also important to Pate to get as much information as possible about her shoppers. According to Pate, Facebook’s analytics have developed to the point that the online marketer has detailed information and tools to track customer activity – the top customers, top commenters, busiest times of the day and week – all extremely helpful to a shopping group wishing to offer the best products and services for their customers.

Mostly self-taught, this young business woman is a great example for those wishing to do their own thing, while being willing to re-envision one’s approach as time goes by.

“I didn’t go to school for business or marketing, I learned this myself,” says Pate. “I did all the graphics, set up the store myself.

I just evolved it to whatever was going on in our lives. And now I’m looking for a school bus to renovate so I can have a mobile boutique. That way I can leave the inventory on the bus and not have to pack up everything and lug it around!”

Living with her family in the Winnabow area, Pate describes her hectic life. “I fly by the seat of my pants, but everything is very calculated. I’m not good at patience or

waiting,” she laughs. “When you have four kids, they’ve taken it all, there’s none left.

Not to mention the fact that we have thirteen chickens, two horses, two dogs, three cats and our babysitter’s cat.”

And what best describes her approach, in Pate’s words, is “we’re doing as much as we can, and living in comfortable clothes!”

I

adore my vintage leather handbags. I think that the deep creases and scratches here and there only make them look better. I am convinced that leather is quite possibly one of the few things in life that can get better with age. For centuries, man has used leather for various reasons. What our ancient ancestors used for necessity in clothing and for protection from the elements has emerged as a fashion element while still holding its indestructible qualities. The durability yet delicate beauty of leather is a timeless fashion statement and a necessity in its purest form.

Tracey Keating, local leather craftsperson and owner of Awl Made Here, creates outstanding one of a kind leatherwork such as purses, bags, wallets, belts and journals.

She moved her leather craft business from St John, U.S. Virgin Islands to Southport after living on the island for 25 years. “Back to back Category 5 hurricanes (Irma and Maria) devastated our islands and to most people, it was a life shattering event. It was time to go,” said Keating. So in the fall of 2017, Keating moved here with her Beau, her brother and her dog.

Although she was born in Maryland and grew up in New York City, Keating’s roots are spread deep into North Carolina. ”We grew up vacationing up and down the coast of NC and have family roots in Southport and Wilmington specifically,” she said. “My grandmother, Sally Harper

Price Darby, was an artist too, and I remember always looking forward to seeing her latest creations. Her beach scenes from Southport and Long Beach were my inevitable favorites,” she said. “Shortly after high school I started making my way farther and farther South, ending up on St John in the US Virgin Islands,” she said.

Prior to the Virgin Islands my brother lived here and my “other half” is a native North Carolinian so we agreed that NC was the place to be, and Southport was our first choice,” she said.

Most artists and craftsmen all have that moment when they are first attracted to their craft. Once they dive into it, it’s all they think about and they want to absorb everything they can about it. Keating was no different. “I guess it all really started when I spotted a certain leather-working

tool hanging on a peg-board in my Nana’s basement,” said Keating. “It was an old rotary hole punch tool and it sparked my curiosity as soon as I saw it. My dad was there and suggested we take a ride to the local Tandy Leather store. And so it began,” she said. “I am self taught and all of my background in leather-work stems from handson practice and trial and error. I had a small storefront/studio for 17 years when I lived on St John and when I was first getting started, it was mostly “how to” pamphlets and figuring things out as I went along.

As I grew, learning how to work with different leathers and tools of the trade, the business grew too. Who knew that leather-work would end up being my calling!”

Keating’s 25 years of experience in leatherwork shines through in her process. The clean lines on her handbag designs alongside her chosen metal findings and clasps merely simplify her gifted eye for style, and how well she pairs the artistic with necessity and durability of her heirloom bags.

“The first steps in a project are pattern making and choosing the hides,” Keating explains. “Then I make the cuts and decide on the placement of any artwork and hardware. Next I mark the stitch lines and match the pieces to be sewn together. Mostly I punch the stitch holes manually and then sew with heavy needles and thread but I also use my trusty old Singer sewing machine for all the final stitching.”

A strong work ethic and creative drive are the cornerstones to Keating’s success.

“Thankfully, I am always, always finding inspiration for my work. Leatherwork is so limitless that I think it would be hard for me to get bored with it! Since I don’t just focus on one aspect like, say, belt-making or just making bags and purses or just focusing on the artistic side of it- since I work with ALL aspects, I’m constantly thinking of new designs and new ideas. A lot of those ideas and designs come from things I see, some come from my customers with custom requests, and every now and then I’ll dream

about new or better ways to make things. I absolutely love working for myself, no employees, making my own hours, creating at my own pace. I am so very fortunate that I enjoy what I do for work. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s still a lot of your time. It takes dedication,” said Keating.

CHEERS The Juleps of Spring How & why to enjoy a classic cocktail STORY BY JEFFREY STITES

S

pringtime is finally upon us! Man, that was one long winter, wasn’t it? Not that I don’t appreciate every day, but the warm, sunny days are a bit easier to appreciate if you ask me. I’m ready for Spring, and for Spring cocktails!

While Spring is warmer, it’s not hot like summer, so we don’t want to go jumping into summertime cocktails like Pina coladas, daiquiris or various tiki and boat drinks. I love those, don’t get me wrong, but everything in its time. Spring is an in-between time, so we need an in-between cocktail, not warming and savory like a winter drink, but not fruity and sweet like a summer drink. What we want is the mint julep.

The mint julep is the perfect Spring cocktail. It’s a bit sweet and a bit savory, easing us from the cold to the hot. It’s bourbon-based, which is always a beautiful thing. It’s an all-American recipe, coming to us from Kentucky, a state that is neither frozen North nor sweltering South. It is amazingly easy to make, using only ingredients you can, and should, always have right at hand as soon as the weather turns warmer—bourbon, sugar, water and mint.

Let’s begin with the ingredients. First of all is bourbon. Any old bourbon will do, but why not try a few and find one you really like? This cocktail doesn’t do a lot to hide the liquor base, so use something good. I chose to use up the last of a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch I received as a Christmas gift — all the better to send winter away in style, right? Next you’ll need water in two forms, liquid and ice. Crushed ice is preferred, but if you don’t have an ice maker that does that for you and you don’t fancy attacking a freezer bag full of cubes with a rolling pin, using regular ice cubes won’t be held against you. You’ll also need a bit of sugar - granular, powdered, heck even brown, no worries.

Lastly, and what makes this cocktail special, is the mint. This is key, because it is when the mint in the the pot on your porch comes back into full, deep green gloriousness that you’ll know mint julep time is upon us. If you don’t have a pot of mint on your porch you really should deeply examine your life choices. Mint is easy to

grow, requiring only moderate care (mostly watering during the very hottest parts of summer). It grows, as they say, like a weed, which is why it’s a good idea to keep it in a pot if you don’t want it taking over your yard. I’m not sure a mint-lawn is a bad idea though. Hmmmmmmmm. Anyhow, you need some mint leaves to put in your drink and a nice, pretty sprig for garnish.

Mind you, the garnish is NOT optional.

I may be getting ahead of myself here, but the finished mint julep, with fresh mint springing forth from the icy cup, is the reason the straw was invented. No joke. The fancy ladies and gentlemen watching the Kentucky Derby, where mint juleps made their debut and are still consumed in mass quantities, needed a way to sip their beverage without disturbing the mint sprig garnish or looking undignified. Hence, the straw was born. And now you know.

But how do we get to the point that we need that straw, you ask? It’s very simple really. First you make some simple syrup, aptly named as it’s just a matter of dissolving sugar into equal parts water. This works best if you heat up the water and stir. Because you have to use the stovetop, that is the hardest part of this recipe. Once the simple syrup is cool, pour a shot (about an ounce) of it over about 5 or so leaves of mint in the bottom of your sterling silver, monogrammed julep cup. Don’t have one?

Must not be from Kentucky. That’s fine, a rocks glass will do.

Now you “muddle” the leaves and syrup. This means you use a wooden blunt instrument, like the reverse end of a wooden spoon, to gently press the leaves and syrup together. Don’t get too vigorous or you’ll bruise the mint leaves and make things a bit bitter. After you’re nicely muddled, add two shots (plus a bit more for luck) to the mix, fill the glass with crushed ice, and gently stir to mix everything up. Stick the pretty sprig of mint in, add a straw, and serve. That’s all there is to it.

While enjoying your mint julep you can reflect upon the fact that this drink was made specifically to spur the sales of bourbon after the horrors of Prohibition. It was born in Kentucky at the famous Kentucky Derby and remains an integral part of the

event to this day. I’m told a true Kentuckian only drinks mint juleps on Derby Day and Oaks Day (another race at Churchill Downs), but they don’t frown the rest of us enjoying them any old time.

Blue Grass Roots

Traditional music finds home in NC

hen the Irish, Scottish and English settlers came to North Carolina and surrounding states in the 1600s, they brought their distinctive musical tradition with them. First called “traditional country” or “hillbilly” music, the sound eventually became known as “bluegrass,” thanks in part to one of its most popular bands in the 1930s – Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys – who hailed from the bluegrass state of Kentucky.

Most historians consider Bill Monroe the father of bluegrass music. The Bluegrass Heritage Foundation describes Monroe’s distinctive sound. “Bill’s band was different from other traditional country bands because of its hard-driving and powerful sound that used traditional acoustic instruments and featured distinctive vocal harmonies. The music incorporated songs and rhythms from string band, gospel (black and white), black laborer work song, country, and blues music repertoires. Vocal selections included duet, trio, and quartet harmony singing in addition to Bill’s powerful ‘high lonesome’ solo lead singing.

After experimenting with various instrumental combinations, Bill settled on mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar, and bass as the format for his band.”

The band became even more popular in the1940s when Earl Scruggs and later Lester Flatt joined the group. Scruggs was a 21-year-old banjo player from North Carolina, whose three-finger picking style elec-

trified audiences. Flatt offered energetic guitar and lead vocals.

When Scruggs and Flatt left the Blue Grass Boys, they formed the Foggy Mountain Boys and added the dobro guitar to the mix of instruments. This resonator guitar was invented by two Slovakian immigrant brothers named Dopyera, from which the shortened name “dobro” was derived.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Foggy Mountain Boys introduced bluegrass music to national audiences through extensive touring and television and radio performances. Scruggs wrote and recorded “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” which was featured in the soundtrack for the film “Bonnie & Clyde.” In the late 1960s, Scruggs and Flatt went their separate ways, with Scruggs founding the Earl Scruggs Revue, performing with his two sons Randy on guitar and Gary on bass.

Flatt founded his own band – the Nashville Grass – and performed until shortly before his death in 1979.

Another development that increased the music’s popularity were the weekend-long bluegrass festivals, beginning in Virginia in the 1960s. And the music was featured in popular television and film soundtracks, including the Beverly Hillbillies and Deliverance. One of the most groundbreaking albums was the release in 1972 of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Will the Circle be Unbroken.” It was a triple LP set, introducing artists like Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Jimmy Martin, Maybelle Carter and Roy Acuff to pop music fans, many of whom were unfamiliar with the music and its tradition.

And in 2001, the Coen Brothers movie – “O Brother, Where Art Thou” – produced a triple-platinum soundtrack that further popularized the music.

The genre continues to grow and evolve today. The International Bluegrass Music Association has members in all 50 states in the U. S. as welll as 30 countries. As music often does, bluegrass has transformed from the classic style of the 1940s (still performed today) to include other influences like traditional/fusion jazz, contemporary country music, Celtic music, rock & roll (sometimes called “newgrass”) and Southern gospel music.

One of the more famous, not to mention accomplished, bluegrass musicians – the comedian Steve Martin – has been an avid banjo player since he was young. When asked in a Newsweek interview why some people don’t like the banjo sound, he replied: “I actually think the popularity of the banjo is just right. It’s a specialized instrument. It’s a specialized sound—not everyone’s going to gravitate to it or needs to know about it. The world of bluegrass has a lot of people who are very enthusiastic

about it. Now that certain players, like Béla Fleck, have broadened the acceptance of the banjo, it’s actually getting more play, and people are becoming more aware of it.”

Martin teamed up with the North Carolina bluegrass band “Steep Canyon Rangers” in 2009, and has since collaborated with them on two of their nine albums. The Rangers won the Grammy in 2013 for their album “Nobody Knows You.” With themes of lost love and living the hard life of rural Appalachia, the song’s lyrics are true to the bluegrass tradition:

“Nobody forgot when you went away And left this town without a word to say Going down south to a simple life You were always the wind and never a wife Do you ever wonder what you left behind I never got to tell you what was on my mind Nobody knows you quite the way I do No one can love you the way that I can ...”
