Ag growth prompts Hydro One to expand

New line from Chatham to Leamington will bring additional 400 megawatts of power to the area LEAMINGTON – Hydro One Inc. (Hydro One), Ontario’s largest electricity transmission and distribution company, has announced it will continue to support expansion of the greenhouse industry in southwestern Ontario through the development and construction of a new 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Chatham to Leamington, as requested by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

Expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the new line will bring an additional 400 megawatts of power to the area.

“This investment will help to support a fast-growing industry that is contributing $1.5-billion and 10,000 jobs to the Ontario economy,” said Peter Quiring, owner and CEO of NatureFresh Farms in Leamington. “Electricity infrastructure must keep up with this industry’s historic rate of growth – this project will help to keep businesses and jobs in southwestern Ontario and facilitate the construction of approximately 800 acres of new greenhouses with grow lights for year-round growing.”

Carrousel of Nations

Crash claims a young life LEAMINGTON – On Saturday, June 16, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Leamington Fire Services and Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Mersea Road 1 and Mersea Road 19 in Leamington.

A vehicle with four occupants left the roadway at approximately 8:00 p.m., rolled over and submerged in a waterfilled ditch.

The youth in the vehicle ranged in age from 13 to 17. One managed to free themselves and the others were trapped in the vehicle. Emergency services members arrived on scene and freed the occupants.

All were transported to an area hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. One youth died at the hospital.

The intersection of Mersea Road 1 and Mersea Road 19 was closed for several hours as the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) completed the investigation.

Very wet weekend for Leamington Fair

The weeks leading up to the Leamington District Agricultural Society’s 171st Fair were a rollercoaster of sorts for Tammy Wiper, the driving force behind the fair.

The ‘ride’ began three weeks before the gates opened, when she learned the midway rides she was expecting to grace the fairgrounds had been sold.

Somehow the local fair had been overlooked when it came to notification.

But Wiper found a last minute replacement, a smaller version than what had originally been booked. And then another force stepped in to put a real damper on the weekend’s events — Mother Nature.

While Friday evening provided near-perfect conditions for opening ceremonies and wrestling, the floodgates opened on Saturday and Sunday.

One of the highlights of the weekend proved to be a record number of vehicles, with 51 fighting until the end in the demolition derby. The grandstands were packed as the vehicles rammed each other until there was just one left

standing.

Saturday fairgoers were able to enjoy the atmosphere, rides, bouncy castles, refreshments, animals and displays between the raindrops, but Sunday was more or less a washout.

With the grounds saturated, the tractors were unable to go ahead with the popular tractor pull, forcing its cancellation. Luck was not on the side of some strolling circus performers as well, giving them car trouble en route.

The frustration was evident but Wiper applauded the efforts of her ‘amazing crew’. After the months of hard work that went in to organizing the fair, the frustration was evident but Wiper said she couldn’t have a better group to work with while trying to insure the fair tradition continues for the town.

On a more positive note, there was no shortage of talent on display in the Janette Mulholland Activity Centre, with artwork provided by hundreds of local school children.

Local greenhouse growers also competed for awards and bragging rights in the produce competition.

Hundreds also turned out for Saturday afternoon’s annual bike draw at the Leamington Fair. Twenty bicycles, 10 boys and 10 girls, purchased through donations by several local businesses, were won by the lucky winning ticket holders.

Despite the threatening weather, the Leamington Fair’s demolition derby packed the grandstand Saturday evening, June 15. A record number of vehicles, 51, banged and crashed their way to bragging rights in several categories.

Local high schools team up to give Gift of Life

LEAMINGTON – The three secondary schools serving Leamington and area – Leamington District Secondary School, Cardinal Carter Secondary School and UMEI Christian High School – collaborated to celebrate World Blood Day. The schools organized a special blood clinic held Friday, June 14, World Blood Donor Day, at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex. The schools added a bit of excitement to the day by adding a boys-versus-girls friendly competition with a trophy and prizes going to the winning group at each school.

The results of the boys versus girls competition at each school was not available at press time.

Maureen Macfarlane of Canadian Blood Services was very happy with the turnout. “We collected 70 units on a target of 60 today,” she said. “Awesome participation from the schools,” she added.

A donor must be 17 years old to donate blood, which meant many students were first-time donors. June 14 was the World Health Organization’s World Blood Donor Day, making it a great opportunity for students to give back and raise awareness about the importance of saving lives through the gift of blood donation.

LEAMINGTON – For the past 27 years, the July long weekend in Leamington means Arts @ the Marina!

The Carrousel of Nations expanded its festivities into Leamington this year, with four local venues highlighting Italian, Lebanese, Mexican and Caldwell First Nation foods and traditions on Saturday, June 15.

“What a great weekend!” said Leamington Director of Tourism Kyra Knapp on Monday morning.

Leamington’s Carrousel of Nations held on Saturday, June 15 attracted hundreds of visitors to the four Villages. “The Caldwells sold out of food. Roma Club and Lebanese Club also almost ran out; and the Mexican Village had lineups out the door,” she said.

Although too early for exact numbers, Knapp said the organizing committee will definitely be looking to expand the event.

“We definitely hope to add more; maybe two days instead of one...

It was just beautiful to see. It was very busy and very exciting,” she said.

Knapp said 137 surveys were completed at the various carrousels, which will give the tourism department important data and feedback.

Knapp was glad to see that participants were carrouseling from Village to Village taking in the food and culture of each.

K-40 Club turns 30

LEAMINGTON – The K-40 Club of Leamington is celebrating 30 years of comraderie and friendship this year.

For those who aren’t sure what the K-40 Club is, they are former members of the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs.

The Kinsmen Club was known as a young man’s service club, with members having to ‘retire’ at 40 years old. So 30 years ago, the K-40 Club was created for former Kinsmen and Ki-

nette members.

“We don’t do a lot of service work like we used to, but we do help out the Kinsmen when needed,” said Jeri-Lou Brown one of the original Kinette members.

Most of their members are 65 years old or more, so they stress the ‘social’ aspect of their group. “We have an executive, but we don’t have much on the agenda, except planning the next social time.

“We figure we put in our years of service work, now we just enjoy each other’s

The West Chatham Transmission Line is the most cost effective, long-term solution to meet the electricity supply needs of new greenhouses.”

“This new transmission line will increase electricity access in Kingsville-Leamington, and is key for greenhouse vegetable growers to meet the rising demand for year-round greenhouse produce,” said Joe Sbrocchi, General Manager, Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growerws. “It will support the expansion of greenhouse operations, contribute to regional economic success, and provide even more fresh, nutritious, quality produce for Ontarians.”

In addition to the new transmission line, Hydro One has already responded to the rapid growth of the greenhouse industry with a multi-stage investment designed to add 600 megawatts to the Leamington area.

Approximately $193-million has been approved to be invested in the area to-date through the construction of a new transmission station which was recently completed, a second station, which is under construction and a third in the planning stages. Combined with the new transmission line, Hydro One’s work is expected to increase the amount of available

power in the region by 1,000 megawatts – or enough to power a city about the size of Ottawa.

Hydro One will start working on the development portion of the project, which includes a preliminary engineering design, an estimated cost, public and Indigenous consultation, and the Environmental Assessment.

Brown served as a Leamington Kinette for more than 25 years and her husband was a Kinsmen. “We moved to Leamington right after we were married. We didn’t have any family here, so the friends we met at Kinsmen and Kinettes became our family. We’ve met so many people through the clubs,” said Brown.

The K-40 group has about 45 members from the Leamington and Kingsville area.

Members gathered on June 12 for a 30th anniversary

celebration at Kingsville Golf Course.

“This is what happens when you start as a Kinsmen or Kinette, then you end up as a K-40,” said Bob Heidt, Charter President (1989) of K-40.

Although the Kinette Club of Leamington has disbanded, the Leamington Kinsmen are still active in the community. Last year, the club donated $20,000 to the Erie Shores Health Foundation in support of Erie Shores Hospice.

Where did the last 42 years go?

Last week I posted a picture of my 16-year-old self on Facebook and endured a number of comments, ranging from “who’s the guy with the hair?” and “wow, you were thin back then!”

I got thinking about how much the world, and life, have changed over the past 42 years.

At 16, I had my whole life still ahead of me. Cell phones, computers and debit cards weren’t even on my horizon.

A brand new driver’s license allowed me the opportunity to borrow my parents’ black 1974 LTD occasionally.

My LDSS Driver’s Ed certificate helped with insurance rates and the instruction I got from Mr. Hewett and Mr. Kientopp was invaluable. They honed my driving skills in those little cars owned by the board of education.

My summer that year was spent working at Krause Fisheries for $3.45 an hour.

As a teenager interested in girls, I spent a lot of time tying up the only phone in the house, which hung on the wall at the bottom of the stairs. I’m Mark Ribble sure my parents were annoyed but they never said anything.

Eight-track tapes were the musical venue of choice, with cassettes just starting to catch on. I never imagined I’d ever be plugging a little plastic stick into a slot in my car console to listen to music.

When I purchased my first new vehicle, a 1980 Ford Mustang, it came with the factory installed AM radio, which I spent an afternoon replacing with a Realistic AM/FM cassette deck I bought from Radio Shack. It was here that I perfected my cursing skills.

Bottled water didn’t exist back then. We drank out of the tap, or the hose if we were so inclined.

Tacos were the new fad in food. My mom started making them a couple times a month.

It was long before Taco Bell became the household name it is now.

In fact, I think we had McDonalds, Dairy Queen and KFC in Leamington for fast food chains at that time. Tim Horton was a recently deceased hockey player who had one or two donut shops under his name.

We stayed out until dark every night of the week, playing manhunt or hide and seek. We swam off the rocks where the marina is now located, back when the marina was just a glimmer in some town planner’s eye.

Musically, I was into Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac and The Steve Miller Band.

I was playing guitar in a band and we thought we were rock stars but we weren’t. We did manage to play our biggest gig at the International Hotel a couple of years later, but that’s as close to stardom as we came. Well, that and appearing on Reno Leone’s Talent Showcase on Essex Cable TV. It’s hard to believe all that has happened in 42 years since that photo taken by my mother in our living room on Bruce Ave. Married, had children, divorced, married again, and now four grandchildren who are the apple of their grandpa’s eye.

The guitar sits in the closet and comes out once in awhile. My musical tastes have changed a bit and although I still love to listen to the Foreigner songs and a little AC/DC once in awhile, I’m equally comfortable with a little Kenny Loggins or James Taylor.

I drive an SUV, because they don’t seem to make regular cars anymore and I’m okay with that.

Those long forgotten games of manhunt are now distant memories of a time when I could get down on the ground in the long grass and get back up in a hurry without pulling a muscle.

Those extra 42 years on this body have taken their toll, but at least the mind is still sharp.

Today, anyway.

LEAMINGTON – Communities In Bloom coordinators are now asking participating regions for greater connections with their respective municipal and city councils.

The Leamington CIB was quick to accommodate.

During the municipality’s Tuesday, June 11 council meeting, Leamington Communities In Bloom chairperson Charlie Wright requested that a member of council be appointed to the local CIB committee. Council’s response was two times better than he had anticipated.

“We’re really excited to welcome not one, but two councilors,” Wright declared, referring to councilors John Hammond and Bill Dunn. “We’re looking forward to their insight and connections that can work towards the betterment of our community.”

Leamington was awarded the Communities In Bloom’s maximum “Five Bloom Award” provincially from 2014 to 2016 and nationally in 2017 and 2018. Two years ago, Leamington earned the National Bronze 5 Bloom Award with special mention in the Floral Displays category. Last year, accolades included the National Silver 5 Bloom Award with special mention in Waterfront Development.

The Leamington CIB is taking a year off from judging, which normally takes place in mid July. The local organization will use the time to further develop the committee itself while focusing more intently on its own montly Fabulous Garden Display Awards.

A new competition within the community will be the Back Yard Contest, where the committee is encouraging residents with visually pleasing back yards to take photos and send them, along with phone number and address information, to cib@ mdirect.net. Also, Best Blooming Street awards will be judged in urban and rural divisions provided there are enough entries in each.

Last year there was no rural award while Alderton Street won the urban category. Also on the Leamington CIB committee’s to do list is a new landscaping and garden project at Shotten Park. The project, still in its formative planning stages, has received a $10,000 donation from The Honey Foundation.

Thrift On Mill an ongoing story of gratitude

LEAMINGTON – The staff at Leamington’s Thrift On Mill is finding that good things really do come in threes.

Since relocating to its current address at 58 Mill Street West three years ago, the amount of donations received from customers and other members of the public has tripled. The move was made in 2016 from the original 19 Erie St. North building that opened in 1982 and the 2009 expansion site at 55 Erie St. North. The two Et Cetera Shoppe stores amalgamated into Thrift On Mill with an official opening date in February of 2016 and a Grand Opening in June of the same year.

Thrift On Mill production manager Cindy Lasi, who joined the Et Cetera Shoppe staff in 2014, explained that the relocation has proven beneficial to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ontario operation in all capacities.

“The support we’ve seen from donors, customers and volunteers is far beyond anything we could have ever expected,” she said.

“There’s so much coming and going at any given time and we’ve been greatly blessed by the incredible services of our volunteers.

MCC has been providing Peace, Sustainable Development and Disaster Relief since the 1920s. There are presently 600 to 700 active projects and programs going on within Ontario, Canada and around the world. Without our amazing volunteers, donors and customers, we wouldn’t be able to support any of those things. The selfless service of volunteers here is simply incredible.”

Lasi described Thrift On Mill as a “high end thrift store” where customers of various demographic backgrounds enjoy shopping for deals on lightly used and

even new items that have been donated. Inventory ranges from books to clothing, jewelry, toys, furniture, home décor, linens, electronics and several other options.

“Thrift is in a completely new era,” she explained while noting that May of 2019 was the store’s highest sales month since the Et Cetera Shoppe opened its doors 37 years ago. “It’s about support of and from the community and being more environmentally conscientious with our Care For Creation initiatves. Thrift is not just for people on a budget — it’s a place where anyone can be comfortable to shop. The response we’ve had from the public has been beyond our wildest dreams.

We hear about donor fatigue all the time, but that doesn’t seem to happen in Leamington and surrounding areas.”

Coming from a background in nursing, Lasi explained that Thrift On Mill has benefited greatly from the dedication of several volunteers who, in return, often develop a sense of purpose, motivation and heightened energy levels.

A typical shift at Thrift On Mill utilizes the services of between 20 to 30 volunteers from a resource of about 200 individuals.

“We have volunteers from a variety of national and ethnic backgrounds and abilities,” Lasi stated.

Several volunteers range in age from early 70s to mid 80s and assist with duties ranging from helping customers find and pay for the items they’re looking for to preparing recent inventory arrivals for the shelves.

With 4,000 square feet of workspace, volunteers situated in storage areas are normally able to process an item within one to two days to appear in the customer display area.

“Hundreds of items are sold daily,” Lasi explained.

all day, every day. It’s always fun and exciting for everyone to see what’s going to come in next.”

While some of Thrift On Mill’s most popular items typically sell within the first week, there are always new and unique treasures to be found.

“Customers love looking for items that are in the 75 per cent off ‘Colour of the Week’,” Lasi said.

She explained that even unsold inventory never goes to waste, as MCC tries to repurpose, recycle and next cycle as much as it possibly can. “Can’t sell, didn’t sell, won’t sell” items such as linens and clothes are cut into crafting patches by volunteers for blankets and quilts or rags for local factories and machine/auto shops. Other volunteers disassemble certain unsold items for their copper and other metal components that can be sold as recycled waste while some stock is shipped to the Elmira Repurpose Centre in Elmira, run by MCC, where it is sold by the pound as overflow at an even further discounted price. Big Boyz tourney tent relocating to Leamington for 2019

WHEATLEY – High lake levels have forced organizers of Wheatley’s biggest annual fishing derby to take uncommon ‘measures’ for this year’s event.

The Southwest Outdoors Club’s Big Boyz Fishing Tournament, a central component of the annual Wheatley Fish Festival, will be based out of a measuring tent being set up at the Leamington Municipal Marina at 90 Robson Road for 2019.

With Lake Erie surface levels at historic highs, replacement of the east/west docks at Wheatley Harbour will not be completed in time to accommodate this year’s Big Boyz event.

Although participants for this year’s tournament will still be permitted to use the Wheatley facility’s boat ramp, those who reel in fish that they’d like measured will have to either dock at the Leamington ramp or put their catches on ice and drive them to Leamington.

“We were hoping that water levels would drop enough for the work to be done on the docks in Wheatley, but it’s not going to happen in time,” explained Southwest Outdoors Club president Dan Reive. “Hopefully, this will be a temporary thing that we have to do for just this one year.

Since the Big Boyz Fishing Tournament began, rules have allowed entries to use any boat ramps on the Canadian side of Lake Erie waters, including those at Erieau, Wheatley, Sturgeon Creek and the Leamington Municipal Marina.

As in previous years, boats carrying the tournament’s participants must remain in Canadian waters.

This year’s tournament will begin Saturday, July 27 and run until Sunday, Aug. 4, making it one day shorter than the usual 10-day schedule. Once again, the Big Boyz competition will wrap up with awards presentations and raffle prizes at Wheatley Area Arena on Fish Festival Sunday (August 4) from roughly 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In a discussion with Wheatley Harbour Authority harbour master Al Matthews, Reive was informed that water levels won’t likely return to levels where new docks can be installed until late summer or early autumn this year. Previously, high water levels lifted the east/west wooden docks in Wheatley to the point where they suffered heavy damage.

The new replacements will be made of steel with grated tops that will allow them to remain in place in case of future high water level conditions. Those steel docks, however, cannot be installed until the tops of the steel posts they’ll be welded to are no longer submerged. Installation began earlier this year, but was halted once the water’s surface rose

As the Saturday, July 6 Kids Fishing Derby — also presented by the Southwest Outdoors Club — will take place on the east side of Wheatley Harbour, it will not be affected by water levels. The one-day youth event will take place from about 8 a.m. to noon as scheduled.

The Big Boyz Tournament measuring tent, along with the day-to-day leaderboard, will be situated on the grass near a small kiosk at the Leamington Municipal Marina boat ramp.

Last week, Reive met with LMM manager Ronan Oliver, who indicated that the Leamington facility would be able to accommodate the nine-day event.

Local amateur radio operators are going to have a “Field Day” — or two — in Leamington.

The Sun Parlour Amateur Radio Club (SPARC) will host its annual Field Day activities at Sun Parlour Homes on Talbot Street East Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. Members of SPARC will be among the 35,000 amateur radio enthusiasts across Canada (Radio Amateurs of Canada) and the United States (American Radio Relay League) who spend Field Day — the fourth weekend of June each year — trying to contact as many other stations as possible while testing their radio communication capabilities for emergency situations.

An estimated 20 of SPARC’s 35 members will set up and operate one of two trailers in front of Sun Parlour Homes, which is also the designated back up emergency operations centre for the County of Essex.

The group’s members will be one of several across the continent setting up a high frequency radio station that must run off a portable power source such as a generator or battery system.

The members of SPARC will set up the 30-foot trailer during the early evening hours of Friday, June 21 and operate in search of other radio communication centres from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, members of the public are welcome to visit the trailer to witness operations and ask questions about SPARC and its duties and/or tour the radio room set up near the

Local greenhouses compete for top honours

The rain didn’t put a damper on the 12th Annual Greenhouse Competition at this year’s fair.

Local growers were on hand Saturday night, June 15 to see just how their produce stacked up against local competition.

The event, hosted by R.E.A.C.H. International, a Canadian registered child-sponsorship charity, awarded growers for their produce in several categories, including best overall tomato, pepper, cucumber and strawberry.

Overall, Nature Fresh Farms took two of those cat-

egories, one for its Tomz orange cherry tomato and also for its English cucumber.

Mucci Farms took the best overall pepper for its Sweet to the Point, while Sunset was honored for its Dreamberry strawberry.

Fairgoers of all ages also had a chance to cast their votes in the People’s Choice categories.

People’s Choice Strawberry went to Del Fresco for its Yes Berries, while the kids chose Mucci Smuccies.

In the pepper category, Orangeline wowed the adult voters with its Brown Shepherd, while the youngsters opted for Sunset’s Aloha Pepper.

When it came to cucumbers, Sunset’s Cloud Cukes earned kudos from both the adults and children.

In the tomato category, once again the children and adults agreed, with the award going to Nature Fresh’s Tomberries.

Learning about inclusion in sports

Last week, students from grades 3 to 8 at École St-Michel learned about inclusion in sports. The unit focused on inclusion, adaptations and modification to traditional sports, which enables all students to actively participate in physical education. With the help of the Rose City Riot ParaSport Club, students were able to experience playing different sports from a wheelchair.

“Since I am a wheelchair user myself, I have been able to offer a different perspective to students and cultivate a sense of empathy and understanding for people with disabilities, both visible and invisible,” said École St-Michel teacher Serrah Gossmann.

To finish up the weeklong unit on Friday, June 14, Grade 7 student Wilson Tran suggested a teacher versus student basketball game. He formed his team of friends from his Grade 7 class and Mme Gossmann invited colleagues and friends to be on her team. The teachers ended up winning the match 18-16. It was a very close and fun game.

“Seeing the pride and accomplishment on Wilson’s face, the smiles, the cheers and the positive feedback from players and spectators alike made today successful in so many ways,” stated Mme Gossmann.

“I have mobility difficulties and use a wheelchair throughout my day at school. The students have been very supportive of my transition and have embraced my new norm and my new ‘abilities’. I am proud of the fact that I am the health and physical education teacher for grades 3-8 full time and can do so from my chair. I think it creates a certain empathy and understanding from the students because I am still the same teacher they have always known. I have been at St-Michel for 14 years,” stated Mme Gossmann.

“With the help of my friends from Rose City Riot Parasport Club, I was able to borrow 10 sport chairs for the week. Since Monday, students have been playing different sports and activities all modified or adapted for wheelchair users. They have had a unique opportunity to experience being active from the perspective of someone who has a disability. I planned my lessons to include discussions on the challenges they felt, the frustration, the ways they overcame and adapted and how much fun they had,” explained Mme Gossmann.

Another weekend, another tournament for Leamington Lakers Mosquito Major, sponsored by Leamington Chevy-Buick-GMC. This weekend, the team was at the 25th Annual Father’s Day Harrow Tourney. Proceedings started on Friday afternoon in glorious sunshine against Woodslee. The Lakers were a year older than the majority of the Woodslee team and that extra year of practice and experience was evident from the off, shown in great fielding and aggressive base running throughout the weekend.

Lakers scored 7 in the first inning, and 15 in the second; Carter Chorba, Max Carr and Chris Joseph all scored 3 RBIs, with Trent Szorvas contributing 2. Owen Deneau led from the plate pitching 2 and a half innings, for only 2 runs, striking out 7. The game was done before the Lakers could bat for a third time due to mercy Joshua Joseph, catcher rules. Final score 22-2.

Saturday morning the boys faced Wallaceburg. The first inning was close with just 1 run scored and then the Lakers ran away with it in the second with an incredible 23 runs being scored. This time it was the turn of Matthew Giesbrecht, Zach Liebrock and Kurtis Joseph to lead the way, each with 3 RBIs. Grant Symons and Deneau each scored 2 runs.

Again, the Lakers ended the game before batting in the third, winning out 24-0.

A skills contest took place over the lunch hour with our boys performing strongly.

Noah Friesen won the hitting contest and Kurtis Joseph placed for throwing distance and accuracy.

The afternoon contest against Essex was a better challenge.

Runs came at a steadier pace, but the game was won after 5 innings, 19-4.

Josh Joseph, Rhys Tipper, Liebrock and Chorba had multiple hits and Friesen struck out 5 in his 2 innings.

Sunday morning was semi final time. The boys and parents were ready and raring to go, but unfortunately Mother Nature intervened and all games were cancelled for the day due to the rain. The Lakers will face Lasalle Gold Major in the championship game in the coming weeks, which after a split series last year promises to be a close one.

Express basketball camp returning to Kingsville

KINGSVILLE – With the skill development opportunities in Essex County, the Toronto Raptors may not be the only basketball phenomenon in Canada.

The National Basketball League Canada’s Windsor Express will be making a return trip to Migration Hall from Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26 to offer the second edition of the Kingsville Basketball Summer Camp.

The five-day series of lessons will be geared towards seven- to 17-year-old players of all skill and experience levels. Participating students will learn and develop their skills in a variety of fundamentals of the game as led

by Express head coach Bill Jones and a gathering of the NBLC team’s players.

The number arriving to guide the youths through lessons will depend on registration numbers, with the possibility for assistant coaches and scouts to help with lessons. Last year’s camp brought in about 35 young, aspiring players. The maximum limit for the camp will be approximately 60. In previous years, the Express have held similar camps at

locations throughout the Windsor area as well as Weekend Camps for youth players in Leamington and Chatham areas.

“We’ve received great feedback,” explained Express general manager Erin Basterfield. “The kids have enjoyed it a lot and the parents think it’s great. The success of the Raptors this year is great for basketball in Canada.”

Basterfield explained that entries in previous camps have been a combination of young fans who’ve attended Express games since the team was formed seven years ago and avid basketball players who are new to the Windsor-Essex County area. The week-long version of the camp — like the one returning to Kingsville for a second installment — will offer skills development lessons in the morning with snack breaks, a lunch break and games in the afternoon.

Each day of the camp will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. with a lunch party to be offered on Friday.

NOTICE Class Environmental Assessment for Lakeshore Transformer Station Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) is initiating a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) to construct a new transformer station (TS) in the Town of Lakeshore. The Lakeshore TS is needed to meet the growing electricity needs of southwestern Ontario. The new station will house switching facilities and four 230/27.6 kV transformers to increase the capability of the existing 230kV transmission system in Essex County. The Lakeshore TS project is subject to the “Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities” (Hydro One, 2016), in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The Class EA study area will center around the existing Leamington Junction (JCT), an important connection point for the four 230 kV transmission circuits that supply the region. The study area will be bounded by Middle Road to the north, Rochester Townline Road to the east, South Middle Road to the south, and will extend west approximately 550 m from the Leamington JCT. A map of the Class EA study area is provided below. Temporary transmission line bypass structures may also be required during construction to avoid lengthy planned outages, it is currently anticipated that these bypass structures will also be located within the Class EA study area.

Tatomir enjoys second European Hockey Tournament Ethan Tatomir returned to Italy this spring to play in his second European Hockey Tournament April 18-28. The first three days in Padova, Italy, involved orientation with coaches and players, touring the area and two-hour practices on Day 3 and 4. The first game on Day 5 was a 3-1 loss against URAL Russia. Day 6 saw two heartbreaking losses. The first game was a 3-2 shootout loss versus Latvia and the second game was a 4-3 loss to Dinimo Minsk with a last-second goal. Game 4 was a 5-1 loss to a strong Sweden Selects team. The fifth game of the tournament saw Ethan’s ProHockey Kabanets ’07 North America team lose 3-2 to ALPS Selects. On Day 8, they played the second Team North America and won 3-1. Eleven-year-old Ethan was one of two boys from Ontario on the ProHockey Kabanets ’07 team. Ethan is a Grade 6 student at École St-Michel and is the son of Robert and Kattie Tatomir of Leamington.

$65,000 raised at Mennonite Home golf tourney Submitted by Hugo Tiessen

Breezy conditions and cloudy skies greeted the golfers, but good course conditions prevailed for the 17th annual charity golf tournament organized by the Leamington Mennonite Home at Leamington’s Erie Shores Golf & Country Club on Saturday, June 15.

This has become one the largest fundraising tournaments in Essex County as 148 golfers played and $65,000 was raised. Over the past 17 years, this tournament has raised a total of $667,000.

The proceeds this year were earmarked for the renewal of the Retirement Residence dining room servery and lobby.

The tournament featured a number of skills competitions and contests. A highlight for the past few years has been the putting contest. This year the $500 prize was won by Bobby Dick, Dan Dawson, Joe Friesen and Chris Guenther.

The winning men’s, women’s and mixed teams received restaurant gift certificates.

For the women, the team of Lisa Sawatzky, Deb Bray, Brenda Mennonite Home golf tournament winning women’s team, from left to right: Lisa Rickert and Joanne Austin was victorious. The winning men’s Sawatzky, Joanne Austin, Brenda Rickert and Deb Bray. team included Neil Sawatzky, Kevin Sawatzky, Abe Bergen and Terry Austin. Additionally, the team of Bob Kipping, Linda Kipping, John Ensoll and Nancy Ensoll was the best mixed team.

The longest putt was won by Harry Thiessen for the men and Cheryl Rutgers for the women. Neil Sawatzky won the longest drive for the men and Lisa Fehr was the women’s winner. The straightest drive was won by Richard Ward for the men and Bea Krueger for the women.

A cash prize was awarded for the closest to the pin. Richard Lowes won for the men while Lisa Sawatzky won for the women. Prizes were awarded for the closest to the flamingo on the first fairway.

Don Kennedy for the men and Jean Towle for the women were the victors.

An exciting feature this year was the awarding of golf balls and pizza and Tim Horton’s gift cards to the best dressed team. The winners were Lisa Fehr, Jo-Anne Smith, Amy Pilmer and Cheryl Rutgers.

Progs golfers get their games in Incredibly, the other boys of summer were able to play golf without it raining on June 11 at Erie Shores golf course.

The sun was shining down, encouraging everyone to play well. As usual, some did but most didn’t. In actuality, some people prefer to play poorly to get their handicap up so they need less points the next week. It was reported by Greg Dunmore that Neil Sawatzky started working on this on #8. Neil missed a two-footer, making the rest of the group feel younger, more or less. I don’t know, they’re all old or old looking.

That’s what the sun does – wrinkles.

Gene Bouliane finally got to keep the coveted snake from Norm Beattie. This was accomplished on the final hole, after the snake had visited Vic Tiessen and Bob Park. Gene will carry the snake proudly until next week when it is up for grabs.

I played with Garth Dennerley, the progs league’s 85-yearold semi-pro. Last week he managed a +9 and now he posted a +6. Things turned around for Garth when he was allowed to play from the red tees. It’s time to doctor my birth certificate so I can play from them too. Garth earned everything by hitting the fairway and was rarely in the rough. That’s called senior golf.

Steve O’Hara was hitting the ball solidly. His putts just missed dropping by razor-thin margins. Had they dropped, his plus totals would have been staggering. Unfortunately, Steve ended up with a -2 and joined the slump-shouldered club.

Richard Reive was also a -2. Richard had too many doubles.

However, if he keeps pounding the ball as he demonstrated last week, he won’t be in negative territory for too long.

The $10 winners were Joe Verhoeven, Vic Penner, Ron Tremblay, Henry Hildebrandt, Jim Chobdra, Ward Hutchins, Vic Tiessen, Alden Warner, Garth Dennerley, Kevin Bunda, Kevin Shaften, Bill Kelly, Roger Cote and Carl Grossi.

First high plus was Bill Ruiter with +8. Second high plus ($12) was a tie between Joe Vehoeven and Garth Dennerley.

WECSSA senior girls slo-pitch win all-star game The top high school girls baseball players from Windsor and Essex County were selected and participated in WECSSA’s annual all-star game on Tuesday, June 11 at Co-An Park in Essex.

A sun-shining afternoon was the backdrop to a funfilled and high scoring game which was full of great plays, great hits and lots of smiles.

After a long wet season of fierce competition, this game really celebrated not only the individual successes the girls had with their respective teams but also the respect and camaraderie they have built with each other as teammates and friends through baseball.

The all-stars were divided into two teams – Team Cool Blue coached by Mr. Dewhurst and Ms. Johnston (Leamington District Secondary School and Riverside Secondary School) and Team Hot Pink coached by Mr. Stammler (Kingsville District High School).

Talbot Trail senior golfers enjoy sunny day

On Tuesday, June 11, 59 Talbot Trail Golf Club’s senior men’s league members enjoyed the sun as they played their golf round. It was cart path only for those using carts. The excessive rain has really restricted the cart usage so far this year. The greens are in fantastic shape and the workers are to be credited for keeping the grass mowed so well.

Dutchy once again showed his domination by firing a spectacular 36. Jamie Arquette continued his chase of the leader by shooting a terrific 38. Bill Ward (BW) earned an excellent 40. Three players who scored magnificent 41s were Jim Pearson, Phil Humphries and Joe Drummond. Seven other golfers who shot rounds of 45 or less were Fred Michano, Randy Nash, Gerry van Deven, Bob McLean, Doug Langlois and Dave Omstead.

In the 80 and over group, Neil Adamson shot a brilliant 42 to lead the way. Both Mike Wright and Tom Hyatt achieved excellent scores of 44 and 45 respectively.

Neil Adamson’s scintillating shot on #9 left him a mere 2.5 feet from the stick. He easily won closest to the pin. Gerry Van Deven drained a miraculous 16-footer on #2 to win the long putt.

Thank you to Paul Brown and Dave Dent for their excellent work assisting me at getting the groupings and cards filled out in a timely manner. Steve Longeway can always be counted on to get the sheets for longest putt and closest to the pin ready for the day.

needed. He will be kept busy next week. Members anticipate that Wiz and Bummy will be back next week. Thanks to master chef Tom Dunn for volunteering to barbecue on scramble days again this year. Last week, the sausages and hamburgers were very well prepared by Arkey, Tom Sasso and Gary Lee. Thanks, men!

John Vandentop John Vandentop passed peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the age of 81.

John was the loving husband of Jane for 57 beautiful years. He will be remembered forever by his cherished daughter Diane (Rick) Harold and his beautiful granddaughters Katrina and Alexa.

Predeceased in 1985 by his beloved son Peter. He is survived by his brother-inlaw Evert (Joyce) VanDoorn as well as many other loving family members in Holland.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Simple Choice Cremation Centre (519-254-2585) and a celebration of his life will be held in Florida at a later time.

Allan Russell Allan Russell, aged 75, of Leamington, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2019 at Hospice of Windsor and Essex County (Erie Shores Campus), surrounded by family and friends.

He was born to parents Percy and Hazel Grace Russell on August 31, 1943 in Leamington. Allan was predeceased by brother Evan Russell, sister Carolyn Fedory and parents Percy and Grace.

Allan is survived by son Scott Russell and spouse Jo Copeland and daughter Heather Pritchard and spouse Dave Pritchard. Loving grandfather to Kaitlyn and Nicole Russell and Curtis and Josh Pritchard, along with Rebecca, Rachel and Jack Copeland. Allan will be greatly missed by all of his nephews and nieces near and far.

Allan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Leamington.

Sharks host golf tourney, sign rookies

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks may be in the midst of the offseason, but the team is hardly taking much in the way of time off.

The local Provincial Junior Hockey League Stobbs Division team kicked off its 25th anniversary with its annual golf tournament at the Talbot Trail Golf Club Saturday, June 8. During the event, the team took one last glance back at the 2018-’19 season before setting its sites on 2019’20 to mark a quarter century since it entered the Great Lakes Junior C standings. The tournament was organized by executive members and volunteers including general manager Thomas Grubb, Dean Outhouse, Tom Hyatt, Darryl Glasier, Wes Brouwer, Terry Taylor and president Jerry Hatt. From around the Leamington and Wheatley areas, 103 golfers registered for this year’s event to form teams of five or six for the shotgun start, best-ball format tournament.

Regular season MVP honours went to goalkeeper Catalin Morin while Drew Denomey won the playoff MVP award. Braydon Davis earned the defenseman award as Braydon Davis won the 3D Award for desire, determination and dedication. Cole Butler was awarded with the Coach’s Creed Award as Evan Prince claimed Most Improved Player accolades.

During the following week, the Sharks signed 18-year-old defenseman Tallas Smith. The 6’ 5”, 200 pound blueliner from Ruthven played one game as an AP with the Sharks last season while representing the Erie North Shore juveniles. He also played seven games with the Sharks in 2017-’18. On Sunday, June 16, the Sharks added forward Colton Candido, who played two AP games last season with the Lakeshore Canadiens while paying ‘AA’ midget hockey in Belle River.

Although a specific schedule has not yet been officially formed, the Sharks will take to the ice for their main camp the week following Labour Day. They will visit Blenheim to take on the Blades in pre-season action the previous Thursday (August 29) as one of four exhibition games. The other three games will include another contest versus the Blades and two against the Amherstburg Admirals.

For 2019-’20, Wheatley’s regular season will feature a Wednesday, Sept. 18 home opener.

The biggest offseason change for the PJHL this year is legislation that permits the league’s self governance, effective immediately. Although the league will remain a component of the Ontario Hockey Association, it will deliberate and make decisions on its own matters. As its first item of business, the PJHL announced former Hanover Barons president Terry Whiteside as its new commissioner.

1946 Lincoln coupe looks new

Rain hampers play for Erie Shores seniors league

Paul Calderone was still a teenager in Toronto when he landed a job on the far side of the city. He rode the streetcar to work every day – and it took an hour each way. He began dreaming of someday owning a car.

Then one day, from the window of the streetcar, he spotted a 1952 Meteor sedan for sale at Church Motors Bill Sherk on Bloor Street West.

The car was over 10 years old at that time and Paul figured he could afford it.

He got off at the next stop, walked back to the car dealer and bought that car for $50. Four men worked there and it took all four of them to push the car down the street before it would start. As soon as it fired up, Paul handed over the money. The car smoked like a chimney but it got him to work in half an hour each way.

Paul has recently purchased another car, this one six years older than his ’52 Meteor. But this one didn’t need to be pushed and this one doesn’t smoke. He bought a beautiful 1946 Lincoln coupe with the original V12 engine under the hood.

Very little is known of this car’s earlier history, but the company that built it is well known. Henry Ford bought the

Lincoln Motor Company in 1922 for his son Edsel, who loved designing cars. The company was sold by Henry Leland, then in his late 70s, who started the company two years earlier, in 1920, in Detroit.

Henry Leland was old enough in 1864 to cast a vote to re-elect President Abraham Lincoln in the middle of the American Civil War. Fifty-six years later, he began building a car named for his boyhood hero. And the Lincoln is still being built today.

With the return of warm weather, Paul enjoys taking his 1946 Lincoln coupe for a leisurely drive around the neighbourhood. The V12 engine is quiet and smooth with 292 cubic inches cranking out 125 horsepower.

For just the second time in seven weeks, the weather almost co-operated for the Erie Shores senior men’s league as 43 of 51 golfers finished in the light rain for most of the last nine holes played.

The 50/50 draw winners were Tom Klassen and Herb Grundner. Closest to the pin on #3 was Keith Brown and on #16 Barry Miller. The longest putt on #7 was made by Richard Reive and on #17 by Guy McIntyre.

In a game of high and low handicap, the winning team with a score of 139 was Jim Bleasby, Garth Dennerley, Paul Pringle and Alden Warner. Second place at 143 went to Bob Kavanaugh, Herb Grundner, Rick Metz and Randy Bradley. In third place at 148 were Tom Miehl, Ron Tremblay, Stefan Kowal and Orest Hryenewich.

Fourth place went to the team of Norm Beattie, Gord Anderson, Don Mensch and Ed Schachowskoy with 153.

Wayne Wiseman’s 78 was low round for the day. He was followed by Jamie Arquette’s 81 and Richard Reive’s 82.

Two golfers managed two birds each: Wayne Wiseman on #1 and #17 and Keith Brown on #1 and #3. Ian McIver birdied #1, Orest Hryenewich #3, Jamie Arquette #6, Jim Bleasby #12 and Richard Reive #14, while Barry Miller had the final one on #16.

Hopefully the weather will finally start cooperating so everyone can get their games in.
