Ag growth prompts Hydro One to expand

New line from Chatham to Leamington will bring additional 400 megawatts of power to the area LEAMINGTON – Hydro One Inc. (Hydro One), Ontario’s largest electricity transmission and distribution company, has announced it will continue to support expansion of the greenhouse industry in southwestern Ontario through the development and construction of a new 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Chatham to Leamington, as requested by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the new line will bring an additional 400 megawatts of power to the area. “This investment will help to support a fast-growing industry that is contributing $1.5-billion and 10,000 jobs to the Ontario economy,” said Peter Quiring, owner and CEO of NatureFresh Farms in Leamington. “Electricity infrastructure must keep up with this industry’s historic rate of growth – this project will help to keep businesses and jobs in southwestern Ontario and facilitate the construction of approximately 800 acres of new greenhouses with grow lights for year-round growing.” Chatham-Kent Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls has been advocating for the project for several years. “Addressing the need for increased electricity within the Chatham to Leamington corridor is great news as it will help to meet current and future needs for economic growth and development,” said Nicholls. “Greenhouse builds in the riding and the po(Continued on Page 5)

Crash claims a young life LEAMINGTON – On Saturday, June 16, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Leamington Fire Services and Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Mersea Road 1 and Mersea Road 19 in Leamington. A vehicle with four occupants left the roadway at approximately 8:00 p.m., rolled over and submerged in a waterfilled ditch. The youth in the vehicle ranged in age from 13 to 17. One managed to free themselves and the others were trapped in the vehicle. Emergency services members arrived on scene and freed the occupants. All were transported to an area hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. One youth died at the hospital. The intersection of Mersea Road 1 and Mersea Road 19 was closed for several hours as the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) completed the investigation.
