Sleepout fundraiser at The Bridge this Friday LEAMINGTON – Leamington’s youth resource centre is aiming to raise both funds and awareness for the region’s homelessness situation for its younger residents. Sleeping Out at The Bridge will take place starting at 6 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the centre’s 310 Sherk Street address. There, participating teams and individuals will spend the night outdoors to gain firsthand experience with the day-today struggles of local homeless youths while raising funds to support programming at The Bridge. As of Monday, 13 teams and a sum of 75 participants had registered for the firstof-its-kind event in Leamington. By that time, 355 donations had been received to bring the fundraiser’s total to $37,123 and counting. The goal for the event is to generate $100,000 in funding. Sleeping Out at The Bridge is sponsored by Kindred Credit Union, Canadian Tire Leamington, Loesen Incorporated and Security One. Anyone interested in participating in the fundraiser can contact The Bridge at 226-773-3454 or sleepingout@thebridgeyouth.ca The organization’s website — www.thebridgeyouth.ca — includes a link to the event at the top of the main page, from which interested teams and individuals can make donations or register as participants. The Bridge operates Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Bagging groceries for Cop Camp KINGSVILLE – From right to left, Essex County OPP Constable Curtis Warren, Constable Silvano Bertoni, Detective-Constable Jeff Weglarz and Constable Mike Baker volunteer their time to bag customers’ groceries at Zehrs in Kingsville Thursday, April 18. Each year, a team of Essex County OPP officers, auxiliary officers, civilian employees and volunteers bag groceries for customers at various stores throughout Essex County in exchange for donations to help fund the upcoming Cop Camp. This year, the Zehrs stores in Kingsville and Tecumseh participated. This year’s Cop Camp will be the 25th annual event of its kind, to be hosted by Gesstwood Camp in Essex for selected Grade 6 students hailing from OPP-served communities in Essex County. This year, 90 students will participate in the week-long series of activities and programs. Each year, the grocerybagging event takes place the day before Good Friday — the busiest day of the year for most local food retailers. This year’s fundraiser included draws for gift baskets and ‘swag’ giveaways at both locations in exchange for donations. (Southpoint Sun Photo)
7th Annual Walk/Run for Autism Awareness and Acceptance Together As Caring Communities
LEAMINGTON – The Together As Caring Communities Walk/Run will be held in Leamington at Seacliff Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. This event first started six years ago in an attempt to spread Autism awareness throughout the community. Organized by Ann Diab and Paula Filangeri, this event, held in Leamington, brought together the community and raised thousands of dollars. This year, in partnership with Autism Ontario WindsorEssex Chapter, the hope is to exceed last year’s results and continue to bring the communities together. Autism Ontario is the leading source of information and referral on autism and is one of the largest collective voices representing the autism community. Members are connected through a volunteer network of Chapters throughout the province of Ontario. Autism Ontario is dedicated to increasing the public awareness about autism and the day-to-day issues faced by individuals with
