Municipal election draws many candidates Municipal elections are gearing up across the province as the October 24 election day draws closer.

The deadline for nominations was Friday, August 19, which turned the unofficial list of candidates into the certified list of candidates.

The four local municipalities have an array of candidates and voting methods going into the campaign season.

Leamington, Kingsville and Pelee Island will be vote-by-mail only, while Chatham-Kent will employ internet voting, vote-by-mail and in-person voting on election day.

The Southpoint Sun will run candidate bios beginning in mid-September.

Several new faces are on the list for Leamington council in the upcoming municipal election with three vying for the may-

or’s seat, three for deputy mayor and 16 candidates have registered to run for five council chairs.

For Mayor, the incumbent Hilda MacDonald is running once again, with challenges from Cris Biron and Jimmy Simoni.

The Deputy Mayor race will be contested by incumbent Larry Verbeke, who is being challenged

by John Tofflemire and Shelly J. Quick.

As for council positions, incumbents Bill Dunn, Heather Latam, Paul Tiessen and Tim Wilkinson are up against challengers Anthony Abraham, Tara Adams, Gerald Barros, Derek Friesen, Christine Lehn, Dave Metcalfe, Christine Montgomery, Oscar Ramirez, Corey Robertson, Isaac Schmitt, Kyle Sousa and Mark Stevenson.

Doris Sauve is the only candidate for the French Separate School Board, while Mary DiMenna and

Derek Thachuk are running for the English Separate School Board. For the Public Board, Nancy Armstrong is running against Aimee Omstead.

There will be lots of competition for Kingsville council in the upcoming municipal election.

Three will vie for the Mayor’s seat, left empty with the departure of long-time Mayor Nelson Santos in July, while there are two candidates for Deputy Mayor and 11 council candidates for five positions.

In the Mayor’s Race, Laura Lucier will run against Tamara Stomp and Dennis Rogers.

Incumbent Gord Queen will face a challenge from Kimberly DeYong and Sam Zad for his Deputy Mayor’s chair.

On Council, incumbents Tony Gaffan, Thomas Neufeld and Larry Patterson will face off against

Scott Collier, Michael DelCiancio, Willy Fittler, Michael Glass, Debby Jarvis-Chausse, Sheri Lowrie, Les McDonald, Tim Seech, Gideon Spevak, Brandon Stanley and Barry Wilson. There are five seats available.

Mary DiMenna and Derek Thachuk are running for the English Separate School Board, while Didier Marotte is running for the French Separate School Board.

As for the Greater Essex County District School Board, three candidates are in the mix, with Julia Burgess taking on Sherry Ducedre and David Adam Keller.

In the Chatham-Kent municipal election, three candidates will battle for the Mayor’s seat, with incumbent Darrin Canniff getting challenges from Andy Fisher and William Pickard.

In the Ward 1 Councillor race (Wheatley, Til-

bury, Merlin), incumbent Melissa Harrigan will face newcomers Lauren Anderson, Sandy Maynard and David Serednicki. Two seats are available.

Ward 1 English Public School Board candidates are D. Randy Campbell, Angela Richards and Chris White.

Ward 1 English Separate School Board candidates are Ben Vanden Hengel and Brenda Rumble.

Doris Sauve will be the French Separate School Board candidate in Ward 1.

On Pelee Island, the race for mayor is a two-candidate contest with Larry Bailey and Cathy Miller facing off for the top job.

Stephanie Briggs-Crawford, David DeLellis, Dayne Malloch, Sherri Smith Ouellette and Michelle Taylor are all vying for a seat on council.

Wheatley residents waiting for province to solve doctor dilemma

By Mark Ribble As the calendar turns to the one-year anniversary of the Wheatley explosion, that same calendar turns from summer to fall with the impending retirement of Wheatley’s only remaining physician, Dr. David Eaton.

Dr. Eaton’s departure at the end of this year will leave 1,400 Wheatley-area patients without a hometown doctor for the first time.

Dr. Eaton practices as part of the Thamesview Family Health Team (TVFHT) and has been the primary care practitioner in Wheatley for 47 years.

About three years ago, an application was made to the Ministry of Health to begin the process of getting a replacement or at least funding for a

nurse practitioner in the Wheatley office.

Apparently, that application has not yet made its way to the Minister of Health. In fact, they are now faced with starting over as the original application has expired.

According to Wheatley pharmacist Mike Untch, the process was started in January 2020 when he DR. Untch is part of the Wheatley Task Force which was formed in the wake of the explosion last year and says that the group has been working toward a solution, which includes meeting with provincial officials and talking to everyone they can about what they think is an unfair distribution of medical personnel.

“Tilbury has seven doctors and two nurse practitioners, with about 1,800 more people than Wheatley,” he said. “Wheatley will have no doctors or nurse practitioners at the end of this year. How is that fair?”

says it’s imperative that Wheatley gets some relief on this issue.

“As patients come in, we continue to tell them that the doctor is retiring at the end of the year and they need to find a doctor,” said Nancy. “Many of them leave in tears, frustrated.”

She explained that many of the 1,400 patients are elderly and have been doctoring here for much of their lives and will have trouble adjusting to going out of town for appointments.

“A lot of our cases can’t be handled by a walk-in clinic,” she says.

She also pointed out that Dr. Eaton does a lot of work with The Meadows of Wheatley retirement community and those people rely on his office to answer questions and offer much-needed treatment on a regular basis.

Nancy believes that Wheatley just doesn’t appear on the radar of most people in the decision-making process and that has to change.

“Back when we had our own council, we got things done,” she says.

“Now, we’re just a small

pea in a very large pod.

No one is going to bat for us.”

As for Dr. Eaton himself, he says the time has come for him to step aside, but he’s not without worry about his patients and community.

“I have been a doctor in Wheatley for over 45 years and my patients are my priority,” he said.

“I have postponed my retirement over the last several years because I am very concerned that many of my patients in Wheatley will be left without a family doctor when I retire.”

“However, I cannot delay my retirement any longer as we anxiously await answers,” he adds.

“This is a very serious situation.”

The hope is that enough attention can be brought to Wheatley’s plight that the application process can be expedited and get things in place for January, either with a new physician or a nurse practitioner.

It’s a tall order, but Nancy Plumb says they are ready.

“If we get the green light, we can be ready quickly,” she said.

One year on, residents still playing waiting game

By Mark Ribble Uptown Wheatley will likely never be the same, but one year after the explosion that rocked the village to its core, many displaced families have returned to their home while others have not.

On Friday, August 26, everyone in the village will stop for a moment to remember exactly what they were doing when the

explosion happened.

Some were working in the immediate area, while others were home making or eating dinner. Still others may have been enjoying some leisure activities or may not have been home when it happened.

A full 12 months have come and gone and while progress has been made for some, there are still several families who ha-

ven’t returned to their homes for various reasons.

The current evacuation zone still keeps a couple of families at bay, while insurance and restoration issues are thwarting many others.

So, where does everyone go from here?

Well, the workers entrusted with correcting the issues and mitigating chances that it may happen again have been working hard drilling, plugging and capping for months now.

For the residents, they have been ultra-patient during a process that they realize has to be done right and not just have a band-aid applied.

Becky and Bugsy Lamb were among the most hard-hit of any of the residents. Their Foster Street home survived the initial blast but was overtaken by raw sewage and massive amounts of mold over the course of the past 12 months.

“Here it is a year later and we’re still not close to getting back in,” said

Becky last week.

The couple has moved five times in the interim as their rental agreements expire from place-toplace.

Their frustration lies in the pace that things are being done. When the Sun last spoke with them back in April, they’d just watched 8,400 gallons of sewer water and waste being pumped from their basement and were awaiting word from restoration companies on getting things rolling with renovations.

An initial clean-up was done, they say, with everything being removed from the home, including the basement drywall.

Large fans and drying machines now run inside the house, but mold is still quite visible on the walls and ceilings on the main floor.

“Nothing’s been done in about three months,” says Becky. “And we really can’t get any answers.”

Part of that delay, she says, is due to the recent flooding in Leamington, which pulled many of the

Geri said they were close a few weeks ago, but when the water was turned on, burst pipes flooded their house and ruined the carpets. She walked in one day to a wet, soaking mess.

“I cried and cried,” she said. “Look what they’ve done to my home.”

While the waiting is frustrating, the uncertainty of the situation appears to be the biggest issue for these families. There are those who have been able to move back in and resume their lives, but just as many who still sit on the outside looking in — playing a never-ending waiting game.

And while the Varys feel they are getting really close to a conclusion, the Lambs are still months away from being home.

Becky Lamb’s t-shirt summed it up perfectly.

It said, “#iwanttogohome.”

“Hopefully once that’s done, we will see some progress moving forward,” she said. “It’s been too long.”

Their neighbour Geri Vary is also frustrated with the pace of getting back to her home. She and her husband George were sitting in their garage when the blast happened last August.

“We came out to see dust and debris flying everywhere,” she said.

Now, 12 months later, she’s hopeful they can be back in by the end of the month.

“We’re just frustrated with the system,” she says. “We miss our neighbours. This is the best neighbourhood around.”

The Varys are in their third rental home as they await their return to Foster Street, and Geri says that’s the same for pretty much everyone.

Happy 125th to Hillman Church!

Happy 125 years to Hillman Church, who’s congregation celebrated the milestone this past Sunday.

I have a connection to Hillman Church, even though I’ve probably not set foot in there more than once or twice in my entire life.

When that first service was held in August if 1897, I’m going to assume that my great-grandparents — and perhaps my grandfather — were in attendance.

My grandfather, Forest (Pat) Ribble, was born in 1892 and would have been about five when the church opened.

Over the years, the church has been celebrated at every milestone and although many local churches are closing amid dwindling congregation numbers, Hillman soldiers on.

It’s probably that rural upbringing that keeps the people coming back.

Life out there in the eastern section of Mersea Township

in the early 20th century was simple.

My dad and his siblings were raised on the family farm and he and I often talked about what is was like to grow up on a farm and make it through the Great Depression in the early 1930s.

My dad was born in 1920 and was in the middle of the 12 Ribble kids who ran the fields and woodlots along what is now known as Deer Run Road.

There were stories of a years-long feud with the Wigfields, who lived just west of the Ribble farm on that triangular piece of land where Deer Run and Fox Run now come together.

Years ago, my late uncle Don told me about the feud and how they weren’t allowed to play with the Wigfield kids, even though they all probably had to walk to school together.

They went to the Hillman School, which still stands to-

day. I told someone last week that I’d love to go inside that school someday, just to get a feel of my dad and all of the other relatives who attended there.

I can’t imagine what it’s like inside and all of the wildlife that has taken refuge in there over the years. I’d probably be disappointed that it may not be what I’m looking for but it would be interesting to find out.

Inside the church, I’m told there are school honour rolls, some of which have my dad’s name on them.

What a piece of history, when you think about it.

The stories that those Ribble siblings could tell are things that old books of folklore are made of.

Talbert (Doc) Ribble was my grandfather’s younger brother, who was born about the same time that church opened 125 years ago. Doc was a local legend who got his nickname

for his uncanny ability to treat sickness in animals. He was a de-facto veterinarian I guess. Doc was developmentally challenged and ended up being a ward of my grandparents before he died.

They were charged with looking after him and making sure he stayed on the straight and narrow.

Doc enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1915 and eventually found his way back to the farm, in what you might call an AWOL situation. On September 24, 1915, Doc was discharged and tagged a deserter, before the army reversed that decision and said he was unfit to serve in the first place as he functioned at a lower level than required for service.

First car ride in Model A Ford On a recent visit to Lakeside Park in Kingsville, on a hot July day, my daughter Juliana and I found some shade inside a gazebo. And that is where we met Dominique Valarde and his wife Elizabeth.

The conversation soon turned to old cars and I asked Dominique if he recalled the first car he rode in. He said he rode in his dad’s Model A Ford fourdoor sedan when he was

only a small child in the early 1950s.

Dominique had a brother several years older who borrowed his dad’s Model A and along with two friends went for a drive. The car stalled on the railway tracks on the Arner Town Line with a train approaching. All three boys climbed out and pushed the car off the tracks just before the train roared by. With no one in the car to steer, it

rolled down the road and into a ditch.

Luckily, it was rescued from the ditch and put back on the road so Dominique could ride in it several years later. The Model A Ford was built from 1928 to 1931 with many still on the road.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble fully, we’ve got someone on the Ribble side — my cousin Dale — who has researched and researched and can share these tales.

We all have these stories in our ancestry and as a history buff, I find it fascinating.

We’re all getting long in the tooth, however, and I hope someone from the younger group steps up to keep these stories going.

My dad was generous with his stories of growing up in the Hillman area and although he didn’t share a lot about the church or the school during his lifetime, I still feel that connection to that little white place on the corner.

The sweet sounds of Olivia Newton-John

After hearing about Olivia Newton-John’s death at 73 years of age, like so many others I felt a deep sadness knowing that she brought so much joy to the pop world of music in the ’70s and ’80s.

John Travolta even wrote a beautiful note on Instagram which, in part, said, “Your Impact was incredible. I love you so much.

We will see you down the road and we will all be together again.”

Born on September 26, 1948 in Cambridge, England, Olivia and her family moved to Australia in 1953. When she was 16, she won a talent contest trip to England where she sang with Pat Carroll in the duet called Pat & Olivia. But her road to success really began with the release of her first single, ‘If Not for You’, in 1971.

Let’s remember what a great pop vocalist she

was, too. It was uniquely hers and her range suited just about everything she sang. And, while it was 51 years ago, I still remember when I first heard Newton-John’s debut song on Chum radio in Toronto in the summer of 1971 when she sang ‘If Not for You’.

I knew the song well as it was written by Bob Dylan and recorded on George Harrison’s ‘All Thing’s Must Pass’ album that I got for Christmas in 1970.

What a start it made reaching #25 on Billboard’s Hot 100, #1 on America’s AC charts and #3 in Canada. With things slowly heating up, in 1973, Olivia’s song, ‘Let Me Be There’, hit the top 6 in the U.S., #3 on the Adult Contemporary charts and #7 on American Country charts. Then her release of ‘If You Love Me (Let Me Know)’, reached the top 5.

However, Olivia’s next

two songs, ‘I Honestly Love You’ and ‘Have You Never Been Mellow’, both hit the top of the charts while ‘Please Mr. Please’ was right behind at #3 in the year of 1975.

Things slowed down a bit in 1976 and 1977 but on June 16, 1978, ‘Grease’ — starring Newton-John and Travolta – was released in North America and it went crazy, going on to become the most successful movie musical of all time.

With that film came some great pop songs, too, including ‘You’re The One That I Want’ featuring Travolta and Newton-John, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ with Olivia and ‘Summer Nights’ featuring Travolta, Newton-John and the cast.

Combined, those three songs were on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for over a year with their incredible total of 59 weeks.

S’Aints will rock Seacliff on September 3 The popular S’Aints ‘Sleighing Hunger’ campaign has been expanded to include a summer concert at the Sunset Amphitheatre at Seacliff Park on Saturday, September 3.

Presented by St. Clair College and Liuna!625, The Bank Theatre and the Municipality of Leamington, the free concert is dubbed The S’Aints Rock Seacliff.

The concert kicks off with hometown musician and special guest Peter Raffoul at 7:30 pm.

Now based in Nashville, Peter Raffoul has a singer/songwriter style approach to alternative music. Originally from Leamington, Peter makes songs that often touch on vulnerability and imperfection, trying to let listeners know that it’s alright if you’re not alright.

The concert is an all-ages, unticketed free outdoor event. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and set up on the lawn for the show. If the weather becomes inclement, the concert will be held on Sunday, September 4.

Refreshments are available at the Kinsmen Kanteen. LTGO on-demand transit hours have been extended to 11:00 pm.

HILLMAN CHURCH CELEBRATES 125 YEARS

The congregation and guests of Hillman Church held a celebratory service on Sunday, August 21 to commemorate the church’s 125th anniversary. About 45-50 people attended the service and reminisced about the past years in one of Leamington’s classic rural churches.

Speaker Phil Hernandez was accompanied by Dale Rivard on pedaled steel guitar. A potluck

luncheon — complete with a 125th birthday cake — followed the service. The first worship service was held at Hillman on August 18, 1897. In the photo on the left, the church’s new sign stands proudly in front of the building. In the photo on the right, the church has been kept up immaculately by the congregation over the years.

Special choir to present Letters from the Past

By Helen Brown A special community choir, under the direction of Elaine Penner, is busy rehearsing for their upcoming concert entitled “Letters from the Past”, sponsored by the Essex-Kent Mennonite Historical Association.

In 1926, Jacob and Olga Hamm and Agatha Nickel emigrated from the Ukraine to Canada, leaving behind four brothers.

Letters received from these four brothers chronicled their lives during the following decade.

Everyone is invited to a reading of excerpts from Kolja and Agnes Penner Nickel’s letters from the past, with Elaine Penner’s choral music accompany-

ing the reading of these letters.

Included in the program are favourite Mennonite songs such as ‘Weisst Du Wieviel Sternlein Stehen?’, ‘Oh Thou Joyful Day’ and ‘Leise Rieselt der Schnee’, all arranged or composed by Elaine Penner.

Many members of the community are performing in this program, along with Kolja and Agnes Nickel’s relatives. Herb Hamm, Kolja’s nephew, translated the original letters and published them to preserve their family history. Carol Hamm, his daughter, will be reading her great-uncle Kolja’s letters, while Helga Enns will read her great-

aunt Agnes’ letters. Kolja Nickel also happens to be Elaine’s great-uncle, and he was her inspiration to create this program.

Guest soloist is Madison Hamm, choir accompanist is Helen Brown, and guest violinist is Lillian Scheirich, concertmaster of the Windsor Symphony.

The program will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26 at the Faith Mennonite Church, 269 Sherk St., Leamington.

Everyone is welcome and admission is by donation to the Friends of the Mennonite Centre Ukraine.

Donations may be made by cash or cheque, and receipts can be issued.

It is with great sadness that the Tenbroeke family announces the passing of Willemina Tenbroeke on Monday, August 22, 2022 at the age of 90. Born in the Netherlands on November 22, 1931 to her parents, Willem and Dora Rutgers.

Willemina is predeceased by her husband Theo (2019). Loving Mom of her sons James (Cynthia), Ed (Cathy) and predeceased by her son Jimmy (1956). Cherished Oma to Devon, Vanessa (Rob), the late Colin (2006), Cassandra (Todd) and Calvin, and Great-Oma to Brynlee. Dear sister of the late Bernard (late Annie), the late John (the late Martha), the late Henry (late Annie), the late Bill ( Jean), the late Theo (Annette), the late Annie (late Cornelius), the late Narda (late Nick), and sister-in-law of the late Henny (late August) and Riki (Arie). February 26, 1947 – August 18, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paula Kosciuw, formerly Paula Derbyshire, nee Paula Mary Cabrini Hickey.

Paula passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

Paula is the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Hickey, of Holyrood, Newfoundland. She moved to Leamington in 1963, where she worked at the Sunparlour Co-op for years.

Paula met and married the late Guye Derbyshire in 1966.

Together they enjoyed raising a family and building a family business until his passing in 1991.

Paula continued her journey, and in 1995, married the late John Kosciuw (2021). Together they enjoyed spending time with their extended families, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Paula is the loving mother of Annette (Denis) Mamo, and Neil (Cynthia) Derbyshire, and cherished grandmother of the late Bryce Mamo, Bailey Mamo, Hanna Derbyshire, and Garison Derbyshire. Loving sister of Barbara Whitten, Claire Hickey, Francis Hickey, Mary Hickey and the late Joseph Hickey. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and her extended family.

Paula spent many years teaching at Montessori Pre School and caregiving at the Sun Parlour Nursing Home in Leamington.

The family would like to thank Dr. Simpson, Erie Shores HealthCare, Dr. Rukavina and Iler Lodge staff for the excellent care they provided for her over the years.

Arnold Jan van Essen

Arnold Jan van Essen, born on July 9, 1941, in Enschede, Netherlands to parents Jan van Essen and Engalida (Bevers) van Essen.

Went to meet his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Erie Shores HealthCare after a brief illness at the age of 81 years.

The family van Essen emigrated to Canada in February 1952 on the S.S. Zuiderkruis, and landed at Pier 21 in Halifax with father Jan, mother Engalida, sons John, Arnold, and young daughter Jeannette. They settled near Ottawa where later, baby brother William (Billy) was a Canadian addition to the family. Arnold is predeceased by his parents, brother John, sister-in-law sister-in-lawto Anne (Bill), infant ProofPat, ofand obituary run son David (1977) and daughter Lorri (2022).

He married Nancy Randall (2014), with whom he had four children: Sandra, Lorri 24, (2022), August 2022David (1977), and Brian. Being a very creative Mr. Fixit, many spare parts collected in his workshop. He also volunteered in the many activities that Lucille dragged him into.

In the last years, memory loss robbed Arnold and those he loved of the wonderful spirit of joy that was his characteristic. Thank you to Dr. DeMars and a very special thank you to the wonderful caring nurses that have cared for Arnold in the hospital.

Crime Stoppers held its annual golf tournament fundraiser on August 18th at the beautiful Kingsville Golf & Country Club. More than 160 golfers teed off, raising over $20,000 for the non-profit charitable program that allows members of the community to provide anonymous information to help police solve crime. With youthful exuberance, lobball and pickle ball players congregate on Thursday nights at the Wheatley recreation complex for bragging rights and possibly a cold beverage afterwards. Pickleball, a relatively new sport featuring a mix of tennis and badminton, is played at the tennis courts with 20 players signed up. Average turnout is around 12 each week with players rotating in and out of games to reduce strain on some aging bones and muscles. Bounty From The County golf event draws 104 golfers On July 21, Orchard View Golf Course hosted the 6th Annual Bounty from the County Ladies Golf Tournament.

The tournament began as a way to help support the Kingsville Community Food Bank. The past few tournaments, as well as this one, have been sold out with 104 ladies from the area, from London and Toronto and as far away as Texas enjoying the day.

The format is a four-woman scramble.

This year’s winning team of Yan Gong, Lisa Xu,

Kelly Jia and Susan Wang were attending for the first time. They carded a score of four under, a 68.

Right on their heels were two teams tied at three under: the Erie Shores team of Carol Quinn, Deb Dunmore, Linda Segedin and Lynne Towle; and the Orchard View team of Mary Fehr, Ruth Drummond, Nancy Friesen and Terri Taylor.

Closest to the Pin honours went to Karen Hayes, while the longest drive was made by Erin Kopinak.

The Team Spirit award

went to Team Kopinak: Erin and Kelly Kopinak, Allie Robinson and Helen Clark.

Donations of many prizes made for a healthy raffle table, while hole sponsors contributed $3,000 toward the total donated to the Food Bank.

Each participant took home a swag bag from Erie Shores Family Dentistry filled with produce donated by local greenhouse growers Klassen Farms, Sunset Produce, Cielo Farms and Pinnacle Farms. Moosehead Brew-

ery staff were on hand for a much-appreciated tasting of beer and coolers after the “hot” round.

The tournament has be-

come very popular and enjoyed each year by all the ladies.

In addition to having a great day, the tournament

was able to donate $5,200 to the Kingsville Community Food Bank. Plans are already underway for next year.

Leamington Fire celebrating 150 years

OGVG joins symposium on tomato virus Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) joined the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), Flowers Canada-Ontario (FCO) and many researchers, growers, extension specialists and industry experts in Toronto last week for the heavily anticipated Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) Symposium.

The well-attended event brought top researchers from countries across Europe, North America and Israel to share insights, experiences and learnings.

Postponed from its original date in 2020 due to the global-pandemic, the eagerly anticipated event was the first opportunity to meet and discuss this virus that threatens tomato plants on a global basis. It offered a unique ability to share research, ongoing management, future potential and mitigation opportunities through many ongoing projects.

The Leamington Fire Hall at 5 Clark St. W. is open to the community on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the summer.

Visitors can view and explore the fire trucks, meet members of the Fire Services team and learn about fire safety.

The municipality will also be hosting a community celebration on Tuesday, August 30 at the Leamington Fire Hall

from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Attendees can meet Sparky the Fire Dog, learn about fire safety and view the official push-in ceremony for Engine 144.

All events take place outdoors and are weather dependent.

The Fire Services team has been at various community locations every Thursday.

Cell phones stolen during break-in

On Wednesday August 17, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Leamington Detachment members were on patrol on Erie Street South when they observed damage to the front door of a business located on Erie Street South, just south of Talbot Street in Leamington.

Officers observed three

individuals in the area around 6:30 a.m. on the same day. There appeared to be two males and a female.

Once inside the business, a quantity of mobile phones was stolen.

Leamington OPP continue to investigate and is asking anyone with any information regarding this

incident to contact them at 1-888-310-1122.

Speed boat rides were available from the Cedar Beach Drug Store for 50 cents a ride for summer visitors renting a cabin or for cottagers not owning a boat.

Looking back ...

History of newspapers in Leamington

By C. Scott Holland Newspapers have been a vital part of most communities for nearly two centuries and it is not surprising that a history of Leamington’s own newspapers dates back to before it became a village.

Leamington had not been granted village status when William McSween debuted the first issue of his Erie Post newspaper on May 28, 1874. The paper changed its name to the Leamington Post two years later when the village’s first council took office.

McSween had invested $600 and produced a small sheet of 28 columns but in 1875 Charles H. Fox became the paper’s owner; McSween would re-acquired it in 1876. During those early years there were many ownership changes. Mr. F. Fair purchased it from McSween and took Bryon Lane as a partner. After a short time, the two men then sold the newspaper to a Mr. Green who hailed from Toronto. In turn, Green sold his interests to H.T. Magill who subsequently lost the newspaper business in the spectacular May 1883 fire which leveled all but a couple of buildings in Leamington’s downtown business section. Despite having the printing establishment rebuilt, it burned to the ground again in 1885.

Upon Magill’s death, J.E. Johnson purchased the paper and in 1888 sold it to the firm of Wigle and Williams. The following year, Johnson and J.F. MacKay purchased it, plus bought out the rival Leamington Tribune and thus established the Post Printing Company.

By the time Leamington was incorporated as a town in 1890, another weekly called the Leamington News published a paper. The two newspapers battled for readership over a span of 20 years but the small town of Leamington couldn’t support two newspapers. The News folded in 1910. Upon the News’ demise J.E. Johnson and A.A. Whitwam amalgamated it with the Post and thus the Leamington Post and News was born.

Future Leamington mayor Phil.H. Fader became associated with paper’s management in the 1920s and guided the paper through typesetting and font changes, plus added a feature writer, Earl Robson, who reflected on life in and

around Leamington.

In 1949, W.A. McKenzie acquired it and was the publisher until 1966 when Thomson Newspapers became its owners.

In the mid-1950s, Peter Drake became the publisher. The paper’s editor, Tony Duncan, would not only hold that position for quite some time, he would become the paper’s publisher in 1974 when Mr. Drake retired. Duncan remain its publisher until Bowes Publishers Ltd. took over in June 1993. Mike Thibodeau was its editor from 1974 until his retirement about 2010.

Bowes also published the weekly Leamington Shopper, which had been started by the late Jack Greswell. Employees of Bowes Publishing and the TorSun purchased the company in 1996, but in 1998 Toronto Sun Corporation sold the paper to Quebecor.

The newspaper’s location has been in a variety of spots, most of which were in the downtown core, including Talbot St. W. and E., Erie St. N., the corner of Mill St. E. and Princess, and then its final site on Oak St. West.

Modernizing the printing plant was a huge part of its continued success and sustainability. Sadly, its printing presses were removed in 1995 and sent to St. Thomas during extensive renovations at the Mill St. E. and Princess St. facility which had been erected next to the original Princess St. site in 1971.

Despite downsizing its staff and operations, the newspaper fared well and held its own for two years after the Southpoint Sun hit the market. But as revenues and readership dwindled, Quebecor unexpectedly shuttered three Essex County newspapers all on the same day in December 2012. One of the others hit was the Amherstburg Echo, one of the province’s oldest newspapers.

The owners of the Southpoint Sun have ensured that a newspaper remains in Leamington when it moved its offices to Talbot St. East.

Today the Sun continues to deliver the news and other features on a weekly basis and supplies Leamington and area with news stories, insightful pieces and photographs all relating to the weekly events that affect the local community.

An Indemnity Deposit is usually associated with permits for driveway or other construction on County roads.

An Indemnity Deposit is an amount paid to meet all or a portion of all the cost and expenses of remediating or repairing any damage to County Property or infrastructure, including, but not limited to roads, curbing or municipal drains, caused as a result of the use of such property or infrastructure or as a result of carrying on of construction or demolition or other works on adjacent property.

Mother Nature kind to senior golfers

By Bob McLean The Talbot Trail senior men’s golf league had 59 players who enjoyed a beautiful summer day of golf.

The next golf excursion is on Monday, August 29 in Blenheim.

There were three golfers who scored nifty 50 results: David Tonks, Schmidty and Paul Harrison. The long putt victor was Mr. Wiz Derbyshire as he drained an amazing 16-foot putt on #9 to within 8 feet of the pin on #9 to claim the CP. His playing partner hit a fantastic shot to within 8 feet of the #9 pin to capture the CP. In the 50-69y division, Ken Krueger fired a masterful 37 to lead the field. Both Nasher and Jamie Arquette shot terrific 39s. Gerry Van Deven enjoyed an impressive 42. Solid 45s were scored by Russell Alliett, Tim Stevenson and Gary Marentette.

In the 70-79 grouping, both Al Zanuttini and Rick Thompson shot outstanding 39s.

Joe Drummond, Pearcie and Dutchy were one shot back with their brilliant 40s. Paul Carioli and Bill Ward scored excellent results of 41 and 42 respectively. Larry Hyatt and Chopper merited very praiseworthy 43s. Ray La Pierre produced a very noteworthy 45.

In the 80-85y division, guest Mike Wright led the way with his inspiring 43. Four golfers who merited brilliant 45s were Joe Vrtel, Gary Honey, Tom Sasso and Ron McCracken. Other noteworthy results: Andy Orsini and Walter Balsam 49s; Neil Adamson 51.

The “super” seniors continued to impress the league players with their marvellous play. Both Tom Hyatt and Bob Freure shot very impressive results of 46 and 47 respectively.

The hotly contested 86y+ “gold” division produced excellent results. Gerry Becigneul earned a spectacular 43. Carl Robinson and Dave La Bonte produced brilliant 46 and 47 respectively. Both Erle and Murray came in with very satisfying results.

Erie Shores men’s senior golf results Forty-six senior men’s league golfers enjoyed a round of golf and fellowship on August 15 at Erie Shores.

The winning team with a score of 127 was Herb Grundner, Ian McIver, Jerry Malott and John Rutgers. Second place with a score of 131 were Ross Clark, Guy McIntyre, Paul Pringle and Rob Toyne. Third place

at 132 went to Bill Gherasim, Jerry Mallard, Rick Metz and Alden Warner.

In fourth place at 133 were Don Chalcraft, Ed Schachoskoy, and Richard Reive.

The draw winners were Rick Metz and Alden Warner.

Closest to the hole on #3 was John Rutgers and on #16 Frank Gow. The longest putt on #9

was Stefan Kowal and on #18 Derek Horop.

The low net winners were Guy McIntyre 62, and Alden Warner, Rick Metz, and Herb Grundner 66.

The low round of 75 was shot by John Rutgers. Wayne Wiseman had the next low at 78, followed by Tom Miehl 80.

U7 Lightning finish season

Children took to the soccer fields this past weekend for the Sun County Soccer Wind-Up Tournament at the Nature Fresh Soccer Complex.

On Saturday, the U7 Division Leamington Lightning team played hard.

In their first game against Essex, pressure from Kali Gutierrez and

Elijah Fehr on defense kept the goals-against to only a single point in the first half, while impressive speed from Mason Lalonde and crisp passing from Ethan Williams in the second half helped lead Leamington to a 5-1 victory.

In their second game against Kingsville, the

combined goalkeeping of Nolan Aguedz and Liam Policella proved a tough obstacle for the opposition, leading to a 5-0 shutout for the Leamington team.

These games ended an impressive season for the U7 Lightning, who were also the victors of July’s Colasanti Cup.

U13 Lightning undefeated The Leamington Lightning U13 soccer team has finished a very successful year.

They won the Colasanti Cup midway through the season.

In league play they had a perfect 8-0 record, winning the league championship.

This past weekend, the U13 Lightning had one last challenge, to win the Sun County Wrap-Up Tournament. In order to accomplish this, they had to get through the round robin.

With strong defensive play, the team won all four games, recording a shutout in each.

They met up with Kingsville in the final, and what a final it was.

Kingsville was on fire in the first half. The Leamington defense bent but did not break.

Leamington gradually balanced the play in the second half and started to apply pressure. The score after regulation play was 0-0.

I’m here with my bff Squeeks (she’s the one you can see). We aren’t quite sure what we’re doing here but we do know we want to get out of here as soon as possible. The sights, the smells, and especially the sounds of the other cats have kept us (especially me) in hiding since our arrival. My sister Squeeks is a tiny bit more adventurous than me but she’s still no daredevil. We may be diamonds in the rough but in the right home with the right adopter, we are sure to shine!

The goal never came and the decision of winner would be left to penalty kicks. Both teams put their first two shots in. Kingsville missed the third and was stopped on the fourth. Leamington connected on all four shots to win the game and the tournament.

Categorizing the season as successful was not done by the Leamington record alone. It was a successful season because 17 kids played as a unit, worked hard, often playing in different positions as the game progressed.

Even better, there was no complaining and they listened. It was a pleasure to coach this group.

Flyers set to play exhibition games

By C. Scott Holland The Leamington Jr. B Flyers are set to play four exhibition games in advance of the start of their season on September 8.

The Flyers will play two home and home series starting this Thurs.

Aug. 25 when they host the LaSalle Vipers at 7:10

pm. They’ll travel to Chatham on Sat. Aug. 27 for a 12 noon contest, then play at LaSalle on Wed. Aug. 31. They will finish the exhibition series on Thurs.

Sept. 1 at home versus the Chatham Maroons.

The Flyers will set their final 2022-2023 roster before the opening contest

at home versus the St. Thomas Stars on Sept. 8.

Schedule: Thurs. Aug. 25 vs LaSalle Vipers 7:10 pm.

Sat. Aug. 27 at Chatham 12 noon.

Wed. Aug. 31 at LaSalle 7 pm.

FAST PITCH SELECT GIRLS The 11U Girls Fast Pitch Division in Leamington put together a Select team of 13 girls to compete in a short exhibition season. This Select team used live windmill pitching and had a great first season playing games against Turtle Club, Chatham and Kingsville.

SECOND-PLACE IN KINGSVILLE

Cielo Vista senior girls softball team took second place in the wind-up tournament in Kingsville on Aug 5, 6, 7. They won the first game after a walk-off triple by Olivia Jeffery. The girls then won the second game after a walk-off single by Hailey James.

The semi-final game went to extra innings and Vista scored seven runs to win. It was a tough final matchup, losing only their second game of the tournament. Talbot Trail juniors wrap up season

By Jessica Prudence Special to the Sun On Wednesday, August 10, Wheatley’s Talbot Trail Junior Golf Program held its annual Best Ball Scramble.

The program is split between groups of three-holers, five-holers and nine-holers. On scramble

day, the age groups were mixed together for a best ball, five-hole scramble.

Some special events occurred during the scramble that day. Wheatley’s Brody Brown shot his first hole-in-one on hole #7.

Congratulations to Brody, the first junior golfer to ever get a hole-in-one!

Many younger golfers witnessed this monumental event, and everyone is very happy for Brody!

His photo made the Southpoint Sun last week.

As well, Wheatley’s Tao Cornell chipped in a ball on hole #6 from 50 feet to make a birdie for his team.

Special thanks to all of the amazing volunteers who helped make the Junior golf scramble possible. Each volunteer chose a player from their group to receive a most sportsmanlike prize. Congratulations to Brody Brown, Tao Cornell, Alec Whittal, Dax Glasier, Avery Ander-

son, Rachel Symons, Owen Pinch, Nathan Winkworth, Ryder Laybolt, Carson Bergen and Logan Lefaive, who demonstrated strong sportsmanlike skills during the best ball round.

Golfers also participated in a putting challenge.

Prizes were awarded to top scorers. Winners were:

three-hole Easton Flaming and Zak Johnson; five-hole Michael Mastronardi; and nine-hole Brody Brown, Drake Wigle and Tao Cornell. Congratulations to the putting contest champions.

The club looks forward to hosting the club championship on August 24.

By Greg Coulter After a successful playoff run, taking the eventual Ontario champion Lakeshore Canadiens through a gruelling 6 games series, the Wheatley Omstead Sharks are ready and eager to get back for the upcoming season.

Tryouts are underway in Leamington and continue through mid September.

The Sharks open their season on Sept.

16 in Dresden and face rivals Essex in their home opener on Sept. 21 at the Shark tank.

Coach Josh Carnevale returns and is highly optimistic for the season ahead. There is a great nucleus of returning players and despite several at

Jr B camps and the loss of key overage players the coach “sees a lot of promise” in the 40 hopefuls currently skating with the group. And the team looks to have last year’s standout playoff performer Ethan Handley back in net.

The Sharks main camp opened August 22 and will be trimming the roster as they prepare for the blue-white game on August 28th, being on the ice 6 times during the last half of August.

They will add 4 exhibition games, with a scheduled return to Wheatley ice on Sept 7th against Blenheim along with more practice ice early next month.
