Fittingly, the idea for last weekend’s Leamington District Secondary School’s 40-year reunion started over a beer between two old high school friends. Brad Frederick and Dave Neilipovitz were sitting and reminiscing about the good old days when the lightbulb came on. Their 1978 Grade 12 grad year was fast approaching its 40th anniversary. “Maybe we should have a reunion,” said Neilipovitz. Frederick says it took a few minutes to sink in. “The more beer we drank, the better it sounded,” he said. That initial seed was planted two years ago. Fast-forward to Saturday evening’s dinner dance, and the idea came to full fruition. Over the course of those two years, the two set up a planning committee consisting of Frederick, Neilipovitz, Michelle (Bailey) Sproat and Katherine Frederick. Others jumped aboard to help out wherever they could and all of the hard work culminated in 185 people attending Saturday night’s main event at the Roma Club. Before Saturday, though, the event kicked off with a pasta night at the Roma Club on Thursday, July 12 and a wine tour Friday, followed by an evening at the Leamington Marina listening to the nostalgic sounds of the Happy Together duo. The weekend was full, with a breakfast at Colasan-
ti’s on Saturday morning, followed by the big dinner dance Saturday night, July 14, and a family style picnic Sunday at Seacliff Park. Friday’s wine tour brought back a lot of memories as former students gathered in front of the old high school and boarded an actual school bus. Some hadn’t been on a school bus since that last day of school in June 1978. “It was just like being in high school again, with people turned around in their seats and talking and laughing,” said Frederick. Lianne (Wigfield) Hutchins was impressed by the amount of work put in by Frederick and his committee. “The amount of work Brad put into this is amazing”, she said. “I spent the evening reminiscing with old friends and we picked up right where we left off 40 years ago,” she added. And of course, to make the moment right, The Little River Band hit ‘Reminiscing’ was one of the highlight songs of the evening on Saturday. According to Frederick, one of the most difficult parts of planning was cutting five years (1974-1978) of great music down to seven hours that could be played over the Roma Club’s sound system. “We had hours upon hours of great music from back then,” he said. The real highlights of the weekend came on Saturday when several (Continued on Page A-0)
