“Was I good? Of course, Santa...”
Three-year-old Lola Gaffan, daughter of John and Carissa Gaffan of Kingsville, was at the Leamington County Fair Mall on Saturday, December 18 to have a little face-to-face chat with Santa Claus himself. Lola told Santa she’d like a Barbie for Christmas.
New docks... for FREE
By Bill Chaplin, Municipal Correspondent
Monday night, December 20, Leamington Council accepted the low tender of Kehoe Marine Construction of Lansdowne, Ontario, in the amount of $1,200,395.00 to construct and install the new docks at Leamington’s Municipal Marina.
The wonderful news is that the entire cost will be covered by either insurance on the old docks destroyed in the tornado, or by the federal funding Leamington acquired through the Community Adjustment Fund agreement it signed last week. No municipal tax dollars will be required!
Asked if he was confident Kehoe could do the work, the consulting engineer from Riggs Engineering who is overseeing the project told council he was for two reasons: the company has the experience, and there is a $1500 per day penalty clause in the contract if they fall behind. He was very pleased
that the tender came in under budget and is expecting excellent results.
Traffic Signal Improvements On Hold
Tenders that were received for improvement to five traffic signals in town came in so far over budget that municipal council has passed administration’s recommendation not to award a contract at this time. The estimate for the 2010 signal improvements, including provisional items, contingency, and HST was $64, 919.00. The lowest tender was 48% over this budgeted amount. John Tofflemire, the municipal Director of Community Services who presented the report to council commented, “We were taken aback by the prices.”
The expectation is that prices will come down once major stimulus funding projects are over in 2011, so the municipality will re-tender an updated list next year.

Greenhouse Site Plan
Approval An Unexpected Learning Opportunity
By Bill Chaplin, Municipal Correspondent
Presentation of a report recommending entering into a site plan agreement for a proposed greenhouse development at 328 Essex Road 31 turned into more of a learning process than Doug Morrish, the municipal Director of Development Services, ever expected. Because Monday night’s agenda was fairly light, Morrish took the time to explain to new members of council the purpose of a site plan agreement. Like all site plans, this one attempts to ensure safe sight design, to minimize incompatibility, to ensure easements for utility corridors and drainage. In addition, because it is a site plan for a green-house development the site plan agreement addresses water consumption rates to ensure that pressure in the water line cannot fall too low to meet the needs of all users. Because there were no outstanding technical issues to the agreement, it was expected that the report and its adoption by council would be fairly straightforward. This was not the case, however, because a neighbouring property owner appeared before council with a concern about the difference in elevation between his property and the land being developed. Mr. Sabelli, of 123 Mersea Rd. 3 pointed out to council that there is about a one-metre difference in elevation between the northwest corner of his property and the property of the proposed greenhouse development. There is currently soil eroding from the higher property onto his land and he wanted to know what protection he had for when he was ready to develop his property.
After extensive discussions, Brian Sweet, the Director of Corporate Services and the municipality’s solicitor, was able to convince council that the site plan agreement addresses the current problem and when the development is done there should be no problem. The emotion and sincere concern during the evening’s discussion, however, were an eye-opener to all new members of council.
The next meeting of Council is Monday, January 3 at 7 p.m.

A penny for your thoughts…

Last week the Senate Finance Committee recommended the one-cent coin be scrapped.

A report by the Senate Finance Committee recommends production of the penny cease as soon as possible and that it be withdrawn from circulation 12 months after that, and that it cease to be legal tender 12 months after that.

Is Canada ready to scrap its smallest monetary denomination, the one-cent piece? Afterall, what can you buy for a penny? You can’t even buy penny candy for a penny – the cheapest candy is at least a nickel.
Proponents of the penny claim that it’s part of our history. Maybe so, but perhaps that’s where it belongs – in the history books. Senators say every penny minted costs Canadians oneand-a-half pennies to make so it doesn’t make financial sense to keep manufacturing the coin. How many of us don’t take the penny seriously. Most of us have a penny jar that we throw the copper discs into, but what do we ever do with them?

In fact, that’s part of the problem. Canadians don’t spend their pennies, but rather stash them in jars and piggy banks, which forces the Mint to produce more. There are billions of pennies out of circulation simply because their owners can’t be bothered to roll them or use them.
As we add more coins to the treasury with the creation of the loonie and toonie and rumors of a five-dollar coin (fivey?), perhaps its time to drop the lowest denomination…
Other countries have scrapped their penny including Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand has also done away with its five-cent coin.

“We all have freedoms,” says reader
This letter is in response to “A citizen concerned about the freedom of religion for ALL”. Maybe because I celebrate Christmas is why I felt compelled to write in response to this letter.
In our society, we all have freedoms. Freedom of religion is one of our most prestige freedoms of them all. So when you talk about how you want the freedom for everyone, I fail to see where we are denying it. To break this freedom would be to punish the people who do not celebrate Christmas, and this is something we do not do in this country. But when you talk about the lack of representation of other faiths holidays during the year, I don’t think that we should have to accommodate every single greeting to please everyone. I understand that some people of different faiths may not be pleased with the amount of “Merry Christmas” content during this time, but I don’t think they feel that uncomfortable with it. I often find myself in this situation too, because of my Middle Eastern background. People of the Muslim faith often say to me “Eid Mubarak” during the Ramadan season, and I am not offended at all. In fact, I feel happy that there is still a religious group of people who are not shy to express their religion during their festive season.
I understand where you are coming from when you want equality for all religions, and I believe we have that, but when you attack the Sun for posting the “Christmas” article on December 4th, you are punishing the individual for expressing their religion, which, as stated before, is hindering that freedom. I would love to see people of other faiths say what they feel their festive season means to them, as much as I would like to see my own. So I ask you not to attack people when they say Merry Christmas as if they are taking your freedom away. Much like you, I want religious freedom for ALL, even Christians.
Sincerely, Mark Gebriel
P.S. Merry Christmas

“It’s A Wonderful Life”. The movie makes you appreciate what you have.

“The Man Who Saved Christmas”. It’s based on a true story. I’ve already watched it twice this year and we’ve also got it taped.
Spare a minute or at least a moment
“Only 4 more sleeps until Santa comes.” How many times have you told this to a little person in your life, so that he or she will have an understanding of how long they will have to wait? Now as adults, we find ourselves craving “many more sleeps”!
“There is never enough time, unless you are serving it.” – Malcolm Forbes
Isn’t that true, especially during the holiday season? This past Monday morning many of us arrived to work relieved that the weekend was over! ’Tis the season for running in circles, rushing from place to place and staying up way too late, leaving us exhausted.
How special is a “moment in time”? Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt as if you were standing outside of your body, watching yourself? Those peaceful moments alone or with someone special – sharing the sunset, a walk on the beach, running through the woods or singing Christmas carols – are all priceless. It doesn’t matter how you fill that moment, since there are no rules except ‘to each his own’.
Each and every year, conveniences are added to our lives that help to speed daily tasks along. Microwave meals, texting a message, a drive-thru – all make life a little quicker but the moments possibly a little less pleasurable. The old saying “The best things in life are worth waiting for” rings truer everyday.
My daughter called me the other day to ask me if she could open some of her Christmas cards. They happened to include the one that I had addressed to her but never sent in time for her to receive it at school. She told me she would prefer that I still mail it to her since she loves to get mail. Don’t we all? I suggested that she go ahead and open it, and perhaps in the new year I will take the time to write a few more letters. My resolution.
Whether it is a letter in the mail or arriving home to a home-cooked meal, the time spent waiting undoubtedly is worthwhile. Time is rarely on our side though. We either need more of it or wish it would fly by, and yet every moment is measured the same.
A quote from Einstein makes it all relative: “A man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. He sits on a red hot stove for a minute, it’s longer than an hour.” Be patient and enjoy every moment AND every sleep until Santa arrives and throughout the New Year as well!
$1.5 million provincial funding for Leamington in 2011
Local MPP Pat Hoy has announced the provincial government will deliver $1,550,900 this year to the Municipality of Leamington through OMPF, an increase of $516,100 over last year.
“We have increased Leamington’s funding from the Province by over $1.2 million since we formed government in 2003,” said Hoy. “This benefit is important to our local economy and our community’s quality of life and can help lower local property taxes. It is a direct and positive contrast to the dramatic downloading of billions of dollars of costs by the previous Harris-Hudak government onto the backs of municipalities and local taxpayers.”
“Municipalities are benefiting considerably from the McGuinty government’s de-
cision to upload social assistance costs,” said Hoy. “In 2011, the province will provide $1.5 billion in support with $577 million in OMPF and $947 million in social assistance benefit program uploads. This will save the County of Essex $11.8 million next year alone.”
Hoy pointed out that the OMPF announcement doesn’t include other ongoing provincial support to Leamington:
• $187,800 for 2010 estimated provincial gas tax revenue, for a total of $952,000 since 2004.
• Land Ambulance: County of Essex, $5.6 million in 2010 for 50:50 cost-sharing.
• $5.8 million reduction to Business Education Taxes in Essex County, or an average cut of 34.2% by 2014.
• $8 million in Infrastruc-
ture Stimulus Funding.
• $6 million Intake One of Building Canada Fund to upgrade the Leamington Pollution Control Centre.
• $1.1 million Intake Two for Seacliff Park redevelopment.
• $250,000 for Recreational Infrastructure projects.
• $5.2 million in lowinterest loans through the Infrastructure Ontario Loan Program.
The OMPF assists municipalities with their share of social program costs, supports areas with limited property assessment, addresses challenges faced by northern and rural communities, and responds to policing costs in rural communities. Province-wide, the new OMPF and uploads represent a 28% increase

Tofflemires win bid on handcrafted solid walnut table
By Allison Siddall
John and Diane Tofflemire of Leamington had the winning bid on a walnut end table built by Murray Mellow, also of Leamington. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship, the solid walnut table was donated by Mr. Mellow as a fundraiser to the Soup Guru’s weekly soup kitchen lunches held each Wednesday over the past several weeks at the Masonic Lodge in Leamington. The soup kitchen lunches were put on by Bill Dunn (the Soup Guru) as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army.
On Wednesday, December 15, John and Diane Tofflemire presented a cheque in the amount of $250 to Corvin Vincent of The Salvation Army in Leamington. Mr. Vincent was “thrilled to accept it”. The donation will go a long way in helping add to the shelves at the local food bank.
Mr. Mellow was pleased to see that John and Diane were the ones who ended up with the table, and even more pleased were John and Diane themselves. “I have known Murray and his family since I was a kid so we were pleased to have the table for that reason, and to do it in a way that also supported the food bank is a great feeling,” said John. “We have been renovating our old farm house and have already chosen the spot for it.”

Did you know?
As a public service of the Weese’s Pieces College of Trivial Knowledge, here are some fun and interesting facts to help survive awkward moments during Christmas family gatherings. You know how that goes. You find yourself seated next to cousin Randy, or your spouse’s brother-in-law or whomever, and you feel compelled to make small talk. You barely know this person, and from what you do recall you really don’t have a lot in common.
“So Randy, how’s it going at ACE Tool and Die? You’re still there right?”
Randy: “No John, they closed the plant about 3 years ago. I’m now in the transportation industry.”
Me: “Really? So like logistics? Working for an airline?”
Randy: “Nope, I’m driving cab on weekends.”
Me: “Oh, ummm, so, ah… like another beer or something?”
In my house there’s always a TV playing, so at least you can find a hockey game or something to cover the awkwardness. With TV, not only do you avoid having to make chit chat (silence is a preferred option), just about anyone around hockey can agree that the Leafs suck. There’s always lots of Leaf material to share – the jokes, theories, stories of the glory days.
Trouble is, too many homes are run by females who act like prison guards. They demand that all televisions get turned off when company arrives. Thank goodness for BlackBerrys and bathrooms.
However, if you find yourself stuck between a rock and a dumb relative, here are some interesting facts to spice up the replies to those predictable, mundane and mind-numbing questions and comments. Consider this my Christmas present to you:
So did you get your HST cheque yet? This will lead to a conversation about everything from those pathetic Liberals to the service of Canada Post. Here’s a fun and interesting fact that you can impress your cousin Randy with.
Randy… did you know Saturday mail delivery in Canada was eliminated by Canada Post on February 1, 1969!
Got all your shopping done, eh? Malls were so crowded, except for maybe the Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener. They got robbed last Wednesday. Three armed guys with masks robbed the Ben Moss Jewelry store. They robbed the People’s Jewelry store just a few weeks ago at the same shopping centre.
Randy… did you know that everyday 20 banks are robbed in the U.S.? The average take is $2,500!
Soooo, ya getting away to someplace warm this winter? I’m thinking of going to Las Vegas. I love it there.
Randy… did you know that there are no clocks in any of the casinos in Las Vegas? It’s true, and you know what else? There’s one slot machine for every 8 inhabitants. 315 weddings are performed there each day. I wouldn’t want to live there, but over 60,000 move there every year.
Boy, your kids are sure getting big, eh? Growing like weeds, eh? So Randy, looks like your oldest girl is about to pop a kid herself, eh? She certainly doesn’t suffer from clinophobia. That’s the clinical name for someone who is afraid of beds!
Get enough to eat Randy? Did you know that during your lifetime you’ll eat about 60,000 pounds of food. That’s the weight of about 6 elephants!
Excuse me Randy, where’s the bathroom? And what is the cell reception like around here?
Merry Christmas!
Don’t be an
easy target for car thieves
As people flock to shopping centres and holiday parties, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) are teaming up to remind drivers to Lock It or Lose It.
“A professional can steal your vehicle in just 30 seconds – without the key,” said Inspector Rick Derus. “The goal of the Lock It or Lose It crime prevention program is to encourage drivers to take a few simple precautions that will help protect their vehicles and contents from theft.”
During December, OPP officers and community volunteers across the province are checking vehicles in mall parking lots to see if holiday shoppers are following a few simple rules: don’t leave valuables in plain view; always lock your car; protect your keys; don’t leave the engine running unattended; and don’t hide spare keys where you think thieves can’t find them (they can).
Drivers who have not followed these simple rules may find a Lock It or Lose It notice under their windshield wiper that reminds them to better secure their vehicle next time.
“Auto theft costs Canadians more than $1. billion every year,” said Rick Dubin, Vice-President, Investigations, IBC. “About half of all stolen vehicles are used to commit another crime or are driven – often recklessly – for simple purposes of transportation. They are also chopped for parts or exported to foreign countries. Thieves take advantage of owner negligence by grabbing the first vehicle they find that’s been left unsecured.”
The key to protecting your vehicle and its contents is in your hands. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by properly securing your vehicle. Remember: “Lock It or Lose It!”

Honoured with Certificate of Appreciation
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 84 Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Hicks was honoured with a Certificate of Appreciation at the Grand Opening of Leamington Legion on Saturday, December 18. Michael plays the bagpipes and every time a Canadian soldier dies he pays his respects by playing his pipes at the cenotaph, which serves to remind us that Canadians are still paying the Supreme Sacrifice. To date, Michael has paid tribute to the fallen well over 100 times, with the latest being the death of Cpl. Steve Martin on the weekend while on foot patrol in the Panjwaii District of Afghanistan. He was killed just two days before his 25th birthday. A total of 154 Canadian Forces personnel have died in Afghanistan since 2002.

Meet Sam Neufeld Dick
Sam Neufeld Dick was born 19 years ago in Guatemala, Central America. At 9 months old he was adopted by Greg Dick and Susan Neufeld Dick through an adoption agency out of Stratford, Ontario.
Sam is a singer/songwriter. His main instrument is the guitar, but he also plays drums, piano, bass and cello. At age 10 he took piano lessons for about one year. In grade 8 he got hold of his mother’s old acoustic guitar and started to teach himself how to play. He then got his first electric guitar and his cousin Bob Dick gave him some basic guitar lessons. Sam went to UMEI school in grade 9 and had an audition with the music teacher, Mr. Paul Dueck. He was told he was tone deaf. Sam had heard Tyler Wagner and Mike Beggs of the Music Room performing at Gilligan’s Restaurant, and he wanted to be up there singing and playing guitar too. Mr. Dueck gave him one-on-one vocal lessons and coaching, working on scales and pitch. Along the way Sam and Paul worked on theory of music and harmony. Paul helped him find his voice and helped shape him into the fine singer he is today. One year later he did his first performance at a UMEI coffee house. He sang “Scarborough Fair” by Simon and Garfunkel, and that was the start of his great love of singing for others.
Music Music
Profiles... Profiles...
In 2009 Sam studied vocal lessons with opera singer and vocal teacher Peggy Dwyer of Windsor. Peggy taught him more advanced theory and how to get more out of his singing with more feeling and expression.
Sam also entered the Kiwanis Music Festival Competition in Windsor and performed a French classical song. He won first prize in his age group, 18-21 years. Since that time he has concentrated on writing and arranging his own music. How often do you practise?: Sam plays every day, 3-4 hours of playing and working on new melodies and songwriting as well as going over songs for shows. He spends a great deal of time coming up with piano, bass guitar and guitar parts for new songs.
Type of music: Sam describes his music as rock/folk/indie, performing songs by Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Eric Clapton, the Steve Miller Band and Guns & Roses, as well as his own original music. Sam also plays in a band called “Blind Sided” with Bruce DeBacker on bass, Andrew Clement on guitar and Derek Impens on the drums. They play classic rock. Venues: You can hear Sam playing his music at the Last Friday Coffee House in Leamington and at the St. Clair College Pub. He performs as a duo with Bruce DeBacker on bass guitar, and they both sing as well. In early summer he plays at the annual UMEI Bake Sale held at the school. He also performs at his own churches – the North Mennonite Church and the Leamington United Mennonite Church on Oak Street.
Most interesting place played: This past summer, Sam played at the Art at the Marina event put on by the Leamington Arts Centre and held at the Leamington Marina. Sam said it was like a campfire-style gig, entertaining outdoors for people attending the festival, playing his acoustic guitar and singing songs. People would stop by and enjoy a song or two, and some would sing along with him. It was a great relaxed atmosphere, and to play and hear live music outdoors just adds to this great summer event.
CDs or recordings to date: Sam is currently working on a CD of his original songs. He will be playing all the instruments and singing all the vocal parts – a solo project recorded at his own home studio. It will be available in January of 2011.
If you could play with anyone, who would it be?: Sam says he would love to play with Bob Dylan, and he has always wanted to perform with Leamington’s own Jody Raffoul. Sam enjoys Jody’s music and has been a big fan of his live shows. He really enjoys Jody’s songwriting skills.
Future plans: In 5 year’s time, Sam would like to be performing at more venues. He would like to make a living playing music, and wants to keep writing and sharing his music with everyone.
You can contact Sam Neufeld Dick at sam227@ me.com.a

flyers split last two games
By Melissa McCarty
The Flyers split their last two games of 2010 with a 4-1 win over Welland on Thursday and a 6-0 loss in Strathroy on Saturday.
On Thursday the Flyers faced the Welland Jr. Canadians who were sitting in 4th place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference.
The Canadians had only lost three games on the road this season while the Flyers hadn’t won at home since mid-November.
Matt Ogden opened the scoring for the Flyers in the first period when he got one of the nicest goals of the season. Ogden blew past the two Welland defenseman to pick up the puck inside the blueline and then skated in alone and made a highlight-reel deke to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
Late in the second period, Tyler Quigley’s shot from the outside of the circle hit Dylan Solecki in front of the net and went in to give the Flyers a two goal lead but Welland scored 27 seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the third period, Ogden and Solecki each scored again. Ogden one-timed a pass from Tony Spidalieri and Solecki took a shot from just outside the crease that trickled through the goalie’s legs.
It was Ogden’s second consecutive two-goal game and he’s happy with how things have been going for him lately. “The puck keeps finding my stick,” Ogden said. “I’m working hard and things are going my way. It feels really good.”
Ogden also said it felt good to get two wins in a row. “We’re finally putting a full game together. We know what it takes to win and we’re doing it.”
Solecki agreed that it felt good to get the two goals but it also felt good that the team played such a strong game. “I think everyone showed up tonight,” Solecki said. “It took us a while but now we’re starting to click.”
Flyers head coach Tony Piroski said that winning is obviously the ultimate goal but he’s also quite pleased with the fact that the team is finally progressing.
“Winning is great but it’s also important just to see that they are playing better,” Piroski said. “Don’t get me wrong, I would’ve liked them to be playing like this three months ago but I realize it takes time. We hadn’t played real well until a few weeks ago and it’s nice to see that we’re starting to do it on a regular basis.”
Unfortunately the Flyers good play was short lived as two night’s later they visited the Strathroy Rockets where they were blanked 6-0. The Flyers had 33 shots on net and went 0 for 7 on the power play.
The Flyers now have a nearly three-week break for the holidays. Their next game will be on Thursday, January 6th when they host the St. Thomas Stars.

A local golfer from the Leamington area has signed a letter of intent to take his talents south of the border next school year.
Brendan Cornies, who is currently in grade 12 at Leamington District Secondary School, has been offered a full tuition scholarship and has committed to attend Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, next fall. The combination of a small school, a good business program, and an experienced coach are what attracted him to Ashford.
Cornies, whose home course is Erie Shores Golf & County Club, has played in the
Burger King tour and Jamieson Vitamins tour in the past two years. This past summer, playing against some of the top junior golfers in Essex and Kent counties, he finished with four top 5 finishes in the seven-tour event. Brendan credits hard work, dedication, and the help of the Erie Shores golf pros for helping him achieve his goal.
Brendan is the son of Jim and Linda Cornies of Leamington.

Peewee AEs earn two comeback ties
The Southpoint Uni-Fab Peewee AE hockey club pulled off two ties this past weekend in Bluewater League action.
The Belle River Jr. Canadiens invaded Wheatley arena on Saturday afternoon and were ready to play. The Canadiens took a 2-0 lead early on in the first period while the Caps looked lethargic.
Midget AEs win 2
The Bob Dick Plant Farm Midget AEs returned to winning form, picking up a couple of wins on the weekend. On Friday evening in Wheatley the team squeezed out a 5-4 victory over the Riverside Rangers. Jared Adams, Andrew Penner, Davey Watson, Jesse Malott and Wheaton Mouck all picked up single tallies in the win. Malott contributed 3 assists and Evan Nash added a single helper. Tyler Jackson was in net for the Caps and played very well, recording the victory.
The second period was much better Cap hockey and the good guys got on the board with a wraparound goal scored by Luc Ribble. The lone assist went to Evan Loveless.
The hard work continued when Gerrid Boom Boom LaSala scored to knot the game up at 2-2. Assists went to Luc Ribble and Thomas Livingstone.
The third period saw wild action at both ends and the score ended in a tie. Chiquita Santos played exceptional at the white end to earn the tie. Riley Gabriele, Dawson Iles and Connor Ribble played solid D to preserve the tie.
On Saturday evening on the Heinz rink the team played their most complete game of the season downing Amherstburg by a score of 7-1. Jared Adams led the Caps, scoring a hat trick. Brendan McGivern added a pair of goals and an assist. Taylor Omstead and Tyler Lamb added single tallies. Deryck Badz (2), Hayden Loveless (2), Andrew Penner (2), Omstead (2) and Malott all added assists. Tyler Jackson picked up the win for the Caps. Southpoint played host to Belle River and were upset by the Jr. Canadiens by a score of 3-1. The team suffered an even a bigger loss as offensive star Jesse Malott broke his arm and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Tyler Lamb scored the lone goal for the Caps with assists to Scott Robinson and Brendan McGivern. Matt Chamberlain was in net and got tagged with the loss.
Southpoint has another busy weekend playing at home in Wheatley on Friday before visiting Riverside on Saturday and Belle River on Sunday.
Atom majors split on weekend
On Sunday evening the Caps travelled to Essex to take on the chippy Ravens. The Ravens were very hungry in the first period and were rewarded with the first two goals of the game.
Dylan Sample cut the lead in half prior to the end of the first with a sharp wrister from the high slot. Assists went to Gerrid LaSala and Mitchell Chausse.
Reid Funeral Home Atom Majors faced the first-place team from LaSalle on the weekend and was handed a 8-3 defeat. The Southpoint team ran into penalty trouble in the second, which was their downfall, giving up 4 goals. Scoring for the Caps were Mason Gow with a pair and Gioia DeCiocco with a single. Collecting assists were Spencer Wiebe, Jeron Kir, Myle Thiessen and DiCiocco.
The Essex kids restored their two-goal lead in the second until Gerrid LaSala scored a nice goal with assists going to Luc Ribble and Evan Loveless. The same line combination scored to tie it up with a hard-working goal by Evan Loveless, assisted by Gerrid LaSala and Luc Ribble.
The Ravens went ahead 4-3 in the third until Luc Ribble tied it up at 4-4 with a huge boomer from the slot. Assists went to Jessica Jeffery and Dawson Iles. Branden Lavadan played solid in net to preserve the tie.
The kids and coaching staff would like to extend a very Merry Xmas to their faithful fans (parents, siblings and family) who are always very supportive.

Midget B girls win and lose
By Mackenzie Heyens
Saturday, December 18, the Rhine Danube Southpoint Stars Midget B Girls played the Lucan BB team on Stars home ice. For the first time this year the girls started the game with a fabulous first period.
After ten minutes of a scoreless period, Jillian Iles popped in a goal, stunning the goalie, with the assist by Shailyn Waites. The next three goals went to Waites, earning her a hat trick, with an assist by Iles and one unassisted. The final goal of the game went to Kim Goyeau with the assist by Iles and Charlee Cabral. A tremendous game in net went to Carleigh Manning, who stood on her head for the Stars.
The next afternoon the Stars travelled to Mooretown to play St. Clair. The small ice surface proved to be a difficult obstacle for the Stars to overcome. The first goal for the girls was scored by Shailyn Waites with 42 seconds left in the second period, assisted by Jillian Iles and Jessica Prudence. The Stars were down 5-1 going into the third period. They shot out from the bench, each playing with their entire heart. Defenseman Prudence scored a beautiful goal from the blue line, unassisted. Charlee Cabral following shortly behind with another goal, assisted by Amanda Stasko and Kayla Lindsay. Despite their determination to never give up, the Southpoint girls came up short with a final score of 5-3 for St. Clair.
Good weekend girls! For the Rhine Danube Southpoint Stars’ full schedule, visit www. southpointminorhockey.com.
Peewee A weekend update
The Southpoint Capitals Peewee A team, sponsored by Gabriele Floor & Home, seem to be mired in a bit of a slump. After losing the previous week in Essex in a game that saw the Capitals get intimidated by physical play, it seems that injuries are starting to take a toll on the team.
Going into the weekend, competing in the Silver Stick Regionals in Watford, the boys came out a bit flat in their first game against the Lakers of Wallaceburg. Outshooting the Lakers, the Capitals found difficulty hitting the net and when they did it seemed the Lakers’ goalie was able to stifle any opportunity. In the third period, Southpoint finally found the back of the net with a shot from the point by Evan Mastronardi, forcing the game into a 3-on-3 sudden death overtime. Unfortunately the bad bounces continued into OT with Wallaceburg capitalizing on a breakaway.
In the second game of the day they faced off against the North London Nationals. In a tight battle for the first two periods there were minimal shots from both teams. In the third it seemed the Caps stopped playing with hunger and the Nationals took advantage by scoring 3 goals and winning 3-0.
The Peewees go back up to Watford during the week to play in the next stage of the Silver Stick Regionals with the semi-finals and finals slated for Sunday the 26th.

Youth pheasant hunt focuses on safety
Local youth hunting apprentices were recently provided the opportunity to participate in a pheasant hunt held at New Breed Farms near Gesto. Around 20 youth hunters along with their mentors participated in the event which focused on safety
The Gosfield North Sportsmen’s Club hosted the event with the help of the Southwest Outdoors Club, AMA Sportsmen’s Association, Lakeshore Sportsmen’s Club, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Essex Hunter & Retriever Club, the Essex County Stewardship Network, Liqui-Force and the National Wildlife Turkey Federation. Youth hunter Colt Colenutt said the day went well and it was a great experience to hunt pheasants. Colton Vriesacker added that it was an event he’d like to participate in every year.
Each youth hunter participated in a hunter safety refresher, was able to shoot trap and participate in a hunt with a dog, the dog handler and a field marshal for safety. The youth were shown how to safely carry and hold their firearms and were told when it was safe to shoot. Neal Imeson and Jack Szorvas (from Southwest Outdoors Club) were field marshals. They were impressed with the youth hunters and the safety training. “They handled themselves really well in the field,” Imeson said of the youth.
“It was a good day all around,” noted Len Hunter, Chairman of the committee.

UMEI students present Christmas: Love, Laughter and Song
The sound of music and laughter filled the gymnasium at UMEI Christian High School on Saturday evening, December 4 as the school’s choral music and drama students presented “Christmas: Love, Laughter and Song”. The program was comprised of seven Christmas skits, cushioned on either side by the music of Christmas. The skits, written by Graeme Coulam, gave a light-hearted, yet thought-provoking, approach to how we have come to view the events of the Nativity and its players, evoking chuckles of appreciation in the audience. The music, presented by the whole or parts of the choir, framed the skits beautifully as the songs and carols completed the joy and celebration of this season.
