Satellite dialysis unit opening in January at LDMH
By Sheila McBrayne
After years of planning and consulting and construction, Leamington District Memorial Hospital (LDMH) and Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital (HDGH) held a ribboncutting ceremony on Friday, December 16 to mark the upcoming opening of a new dialysis satellite unit that will provide care closer to home for area residents.
The satellite dialysis unit, which is located at LDMH, will open to patients in midJanuary and will be operated by HDGH Regional Renal program. The six-station satellite will provide hemodialysis treatments for up to 36 patients in Leamington and the surrounding area.
Patients in Leamington and its surrounding area who require in-centre dialysis treatment have needed to travel to HDGH in downtown Windsor three times weekly to receive this important service. The treatment itself can take 4 to 5 hours, so travelling from Essex County to downtown Windsor further extends the day for these patients.
“This is a great day for Leamington and our surrounding area and a huge relief for patients who require these treatments on a continual basis,” said John Stenger, CEO for LDMH. “It’s an excellent extension of the health care service we can provide our local communities.”
Leamington resident Joyce Laundrie couldn’t agree more! “I’m really looking forward to it opening,” she said after taking a tour of the new facility. Laundrie lives about four minutes from Leamington Hospital, but has been making the trip to Windsor for the past year. Because she doesn’t drive, she relies on the Lakeshore Community Service, which drives her and other area residents for treatments in Windsor.
“Sometimes you can have your appointment at 2:30 in the afternoon, but not get home until at 11 at night because you have to wait for the others too,” she said. “And when you first come off dialysis is when you’re at your lowest… it’ll be nice to be this close,” she said.
Kingsville resident Henry Dyck also looks forward to a much shorter drive to

Ancient Sweets™ Roasted Pepper Spread
This Spanish spread gets a great texture from the addition of almonds and is excellent to top artisan crackers, crostini or rustic flatbreads. Serve alongside Manchego, goat or feta cheese and Spanish olives.
Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
6 SUNSET® Ancient Sweets™ Red Peppers (about 3 8-oz packages)
1/2 cup (1 1/2 to 1 3/4 oz) sliced almonds
1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained, and oil reserved separately
1/4 to 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
1 tsp minced fresh garlic
Extra-virgin olive oil as needed
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
2 Tbsp fresh orange juice
1/4 tsp salt
Preheat an oven to 375°F.
Place peppers on a baking sheet and roast in oven for about 30 to 35 minutes or until just starting to char on the
outside. Immediately transfer peppers to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap tightly. Let sit, covered, until cool. Meanwhile, spread the almonds on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake for about 4 minutes or until golden and lightly toasted. Let cool.
Once peppers are cooled, skin should easily slip off. Remove skin, seeds and stem, and discard. Coarsely chop the peppers.
In a food processor, combine the drained tomatoes, pepper flakes, garlic and cooled almonds. Process until smooth, about 1 minute.
Meanwhile, measure the oil drained from the tomatoes, and add olive oil as needed to make 1/4 cup total. Add to the processor along with the roasted peppers, vinegar, orange juice and salt, and continue processing until smooth. The spread can be made up to 5 days in advance, covered, and refrigerated until needed.
CHEF’S NOTES: Recipe is easily doubled. It is also fantastic served as a topper to grilled chicken, veggies or lamb and as a sandwich spread or tossed with pasta.

Leamington than the trek to Windsor that he does now. He also relies on drivers and wonders who will drive him locally. He and his wife Marie were at the open house to see the new satellite unit at LDMH.
“This new unit is an excellent complement to the services HDGH provides in Windsor, and allows access to care closer to home for members of the local area communities,” said Patricia Dwyer, Erie-St. Clair Regional Director for the Ontario Renal Network (ORN). “The agreement demonstrates the collaboration and partnership established between Hôtel-Dieu Grace and the Leamington District Memorial Hospitals.”
The Leamington dialysis satellite is collaboratively funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the two hospitals, local community donations and the Ontario Renal Network.
Through the Windsor and Leamington locations, the HDGH program provides dialysis care to 238 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in the Windsor Essex area.
The community raised more than its initial target of $850,000 towards the project and the ministry paid approximately 90 per cent of the construction costs, which are approximately $4 million.
Stenger broke down the funds explaining that the construction accounted for about $3.4M and the rest was for the purchase of equipment.
The original plan was to construct the satellite unit on the property the hospital purchased at the corner of Fader and LaMarsh streets, which was eventually used for expanded

parking. When the original plan of a free-standing structure partnered with a Family Health Team changed, delays in Ministry approvals and funding followed.
New plans were drawn up which moved the dialysis unit inside the existing hospital structure. The six-bed unit is located where the front lobby stood for decades. The lobby area was moved to the east side of the building beside the emergency entrance. The popular tuck shop also moved to the new lobby area.
“It’s a great feeling to finally see this completed... Patients will no longer have to travel to Windsor for treatment,” said Mel Pace, Chair of the Dialysis Fundraising Committee.

Christmas every day
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could enjoy the spirit of Christmas every day? Not the big meals and presents, but the “feeling” of Christmas.
People are nicer during the holiday season. People give more to others in the name of Christmas. Why couldn’t we think and act like this every day? An AM radio station discussion on Monday morning begged the question, “when did Christmas become a season? It’s a day.”

Christmas certainly has become a season. In Canada, respectable retailers begin their Christmas season after Remembrance Day. Others who can’t wait for the increased sales begin right after Halloween. Regardless, most people don’t start their personal Christmas season until December, or at least until the first snowfall.
A change of heart about Leamington’s
municipal building?
Letter to the Editor,
As I read the paper recently (Dec. 14, 2011), I looked at our Council cutting the ribbon for our new municipal building and wondered, what would our deputy-mayor Mr. Wright be thinking?
Christmas trees, lights, wreaths and other decorations signal the beginning of this festive season. But it’s people who make Christmas a season. People give more in December, not because it’s yearend, but because it seems like the right thing to do. The Salvation Army kettles collect donations in the three weeks before Christmas that propel them through the year. I can’t walk by a kettle, can you? It doesn’t matter that I just gave at the last store I was at. It just seems like the right thing to do.
I think what makes the Christmas season a time for giving is that it makes us realize how lucky we are for all we are blessed with. Sure, we grumble through the year about a bigger house, or a newer car or perhaps a slighter figure, but Christmas makes us step back and realize that we have all we need, and truly want for nothing. If I can afford to be out shopping for presents for loved ones, I can certainly afford $20 in the kettle.
The juxtaposition of New Year’s immediately following Christmas is no coincidence. We should all take the “feeling” of Christmas and carry it into the New Year as a resolution of sorts. In 2012, I will take less and give more in my life.
Just over a year ago, Mr. Wright was railing against the decision our previous Council had made to build this building. His reasons were that the burden was to great for municipal taxpayers and pulling up stakes at the existing location would kill our downtown. What he did not say is that something had to be done with the existing town hall. Renovations would have cost double what our bill was for our new building.
Today we have a new $10 million building that cost the municipal taxpayer only $3 million. And we have a remake of the existing town hall that will turn into a beautiful business and only enhance the downtown. What a deal. I wonder if our deputy-mayor told everyone how wrong he was as he proudly cut the ribbon.

The health benefits of TAI CHI
Special to the Southpoint Sun by Eugene Ryzer
Scholars trace Tai Chi’s origins back to the 11th century and a Chinese monk named Chang San-Feng who is reported to have lived for 200 years. Chang San-Feng’s longevity was largely attributed to his philosophy for living—integrating a healthy body and mind.
Tai Chi takes a holistic approach to good health. Incorporating the 108-movement set that brings a wide range of health benefits to the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems, with a soothing effect on the mind. The health benefits of Tai Chi include: improved circulation, balance and posture; increased strength and flexibility; and reduced stress. With regular practice, Tai Chi can reaches deep inside the body to benefit the entire physiology including the tendons, joints, spine, connective tissue and internal organs. It restores the calmness and peace of mind that is often lost through the desires and anxieties of daily life.
Although not a substitute for proper medical treatment, Tai Chi can help to improve the health and quality of life for people dealing health conditions such as poor circulation, high blood pressure, arthritis, back pain, joint immobility, respiratory problems, digestive disorders, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and many others.
Tai Chi beginner class format is quite simple. The instructor demonstrates a Tai Chi move several times, then performs it with the class and finally watches the students as they repeat it. You don’t have to be in great shape when you start to learn Tai Chi. That will come with time. It only takes three months to be introduced to the basic movements. Learning is a developmental process and after the three months the more you practice, the more you benefit and learn.
While all Tai Chi styles are about gentle turning and stretching, the Taoist Tai Chi style is specifically designed to improve health. So the significant and impactful degree of turning and stretching in each of the movements contributes to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, and calmness and peace of mind. Tai Chi is not exclusively for the elderly. Pay a visit to a class or attend an open house and you’ll see people of all ages benefiting from the healing movements of this ancient art.
For more information on the beginner Tai Chi Classes and open houses in your area please visit www.windsortaichi.com or call 519-255-9744. In Windsor/Essex County area, Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada offers beginner and continuing Tai Chi classes in Windsor, Tecumseh, Essex, Amherstburg, Leamington, Puce and Belle River.

Mrs. Claus Visits Ruthven Public School
Last week, students of Ruthven Public School were delighted to welcome a friendly visitor from the North Pole. Mrs. Claus stopped by the home of the Rams to herald the upcoming Christmas Break and to bring greetings from her husband to staff and students. She toured each classroom, answering questions about all of the preparations underway for Christmas Eve. Grade 3 teacher Colleen Preston and students from her classroom posed for a picture with Mrs. Claus (a.k.a. volunteer Heather Cantin). Students kneeling: Zak Braun, Emily Will. meetings were held to get input and opinions about two draft plans of subdivision here in Leamington. These meetings, besides being required by Provincial Law, are interesting because they are held under the au-
thority of County Council (and the County Official Plan), but are conducted by Leamington Council. They represent the opportunity Leamington has to attach its wishes to the draft plans when they go to County
Council for approval. The ideas and concerns of the public can be used to expand the ideas municipal council has to improve the plans.
West of Arterial Road subdivision
The first of the meetings was concerning a subdivision proposed for the west side of the new arterial road at its extreme southern end. The property is just less than 5 hectares, and the proposal is to build 44 single unit detached dwellings accessed by an extension of Peter Street.
The majority of the comments heard by Council related to storm water worries in the area. Run-off will be directed west, which means that the ditches of the East Side Arterial Road and drainage along Seacliff Drive East must be able to handle the increased flow. Assurances were given that this would be the case.
Another concern was with a proposed walkway from this subdivision through to Antonio Court
to the north. Council had already expressed their opposition to this idea, but one resident from Antonio Court identified problems that already exist even though the sidewalk on their side goes nowhere. If poor maintenance, litter and loitering already are a problem, nobody wants the walkway to be built and aggravate the situation.
North of Robson Road subdivision
The second meeting was to gather opinions about a 7 hectare property north of Robson Road, west of Malibu Drive. This proposed subdivision is targeted to have 37 single detached dwelling units and 21 attached dwelling units for a
total of 58 new homes. The draft plan shows one access directly off Robson Road and one that is an extension of Cherokee Avenue.
The only concerns expressed about this property centered around sewers— both sanitary and storm. Assurances were given that capacity exists not only for this development, but also for another planned for further along Robson Road. Furthermore, no expenses would be incurred by the residents already living in the area.
A report summarizing the public meeting conclusions will be forwarded to Municipal Council in the new year, then forwarded to County Council with Leamington’s preferences.
Two new buses rolling into town in 20 weeks
Monday night, December 19, Leamington Council approved the purchase of two new buses for the transit system (at a cost more than $100,000 below the upset limit put into budget figures).
Since administration can now issue a purchase order, the company manufacturing the buses will be able to deliver them in 20 weeks. The buses are state-of-the-art ‘kneeler’ buses that are fully wheelchair accessible, will have bicycle racks, and even cameras front and back. The two will cost $318,977.09 (net HST) and decals and lettering will be added locally when they are delivered.

Noise Problem
A letter of complaint was received from Glen Stencell, the Manager of the Star Theatres on Talbot Street, demanding action to reduce the sound of the music being played next door to the theatre.
His essential frustration was summed up in his statement, “You want the downtown revitalized, but the ability of my business to operate is solely in the hands of my neighbour.”
After extensive discussion of the nature of the problem and the actions he has already taken to try and address the problem, Mr. Stencell was assured by Council that they would be prepared to take some kind of more aggressive action if the problem of sound transmission is not resolved.
Municipal administration promised that meetings with the liquor inspector and the police would take place, and the neighbouring business would be informed of the municipality’s interest in ending the conflict in uses.
MGS Expansion
Leamington Council has agreed to a site plan that will allow MGS Horticultural Inc. to expand. “The proposed re-development of the site will include the removal of 3 existing structures (1 industrial, 2 residential), the addition of approximately 854.7 square metres (9200 sq. ft.) of warehouse including two truck loading bays, the addition of 445.9 square metres (4800 sq. ft.) of office space and the relocation of outdoor storage areas and required on-site parking areas. The majority of the building construction and expansion will occur to the east of the existing warehouse building.”
Asked about the consideration of residences nearby, Perry Stickles assured council, “We will make it right.” His assurance, along with the detail in the application was enough to ensure Council’s support.
Sloan Drain Report
Adopted
Bruce D. Crozier Engineering has completed an engineer’s report that will allow a greenhouse property to connect to the Sloan Drain. This type of report is a requirement under the Drainage Act to ensure that the drain has the capacity to accept additional flow. The report also states, “the parcel... should have their Value of Outlet and Total Value of Improvements amount adjusted to reflect the increase total flow volume that will result from the proposed greenhouse development. The Value of Benefit for this parcel will remain unchanged from the original report [done in 1978].”
The report was adopted by Council with no comment.
Stimulus Funding Final Report
A final wrap-up report itemizing precisely what was spent using the stimulus funding grants awarded to Leamington was presented
to municipal Council Monday night.
The six projects included in the funding were the new Mill Street Parking Lot (½ Leamington, ½ Grant), The Leamington Marina Repairs (100% Grant), Trail Extensions (⅓ Leamington, ⅔ Grant), the Erie/Seacliff intersection reconstruction (⅓
Leamington, ⅔ Grant), the new Municipal Building (⅓ Leamington, ⅔Grant), and the Seacliff Park improvements (⅓ Leamington, ⅔ Grant).
According to the report, these six projects represented (potentially) just over $21,000,000 in eligible costs.
So what is the final tally? Leamington paid $7,049,480 for $19,942,479-worth of work.
The grants paid the difference: $12,892,999. In their share, Leamington had $1,313,288 in ineligible costs included, since the
grants did not cover land acquisition or engineering work done before the application (so that the projects would be ‘shovel ready’). In spite of that, one can only say, “What a deal!”
Roads to be transferred, names changed March 1, 2012 – this is the date the formal transfer of the East Side Arterial Road to the County will occur, according to a transfer deal approved by Leamington Council Monday night.
It will become County Road 33. In return about 11km of existing county roads in Leamington will revert to municipal roads.
County Road 37 south of County Road 34 will become Mersea Road 19, and County Road 20 east of the ESAR will become Mersea Road 1.
The deal was endorsed this early because of the many technical adjustments that must be made, not the least of which is the address changes for 135 properties. People living along these routes will have to notify utilities, family and friends, credit card and licence issuers, etc., of their address change while the Municipality and County will have to transfer ownership of bridges and culverts (five), signs and everything else that is associated with road ownership and maintenance.
Time out
City sidewalks, busy sidewalks... hey, it’s busy all over these days. And though it is the hap-hap-happiest time of the year, perhaps it’s the perfect time of year for a quick lesson in time management and personal productivity. I’m sure you’ll agree the days are getting shorter and the list of “stuff to do” is getting longer.
Weese’s Weese’s Pieces Pieces
We really have no one other than ourselves to blame for this. We are the captains who steer the ship and set the speed. According to life trainer Brian Tracy, the average person has 300 hours of unfinished projects lying around. This could include everything from unread books on your nightstand to minor repairs to cleaning the garage, etc. I’m guessing the message is “commit to doing less things.”
Perhaps we simply need to slow the hell down. Relax, chill, take a pill, and stop the insanity. Not all of us, of course. Lord knows there are enough ten-toed sloths amongst us.
As my early Christmas gift to you, I offer a few nuggets of wisdom from the Weese College of Questionable Knowledge. Besides, I’ve just completed teaching my Time Management workshops and the ink on the notes is still fresh.
Here’s the million dollar question: “If there was one thing, one action, that you could commit to that would make a significant difference in your progression, what would that be?”
A follow-up question might be: “What might prevent you from accomplishing this action or goal?” If your answer is “I’m a chronic procrastinator”, you’ve got your work cut out for you, but it can be done.
Hard to say why people procrastinate, and there are many theories. Some might be afraid of failing, some might be a perfectionist, while others like to work in an 11th hour stressful environment.
Judging by the repeated behaviour, people who continue to choose procrastination must be getting something out of the behaviour. Interesting to note that according to Psychology Today, procrastinators have weakened immune systems and get sick more often than doers. They have a tendency to drink more alcohol too. The lesson here? Don’t wait a second longer to shed the procrastination constipation. Remember, good habits are established in only 21 days (and completely undone in 9 days).
The key to effective time management and personal productivity is to recognize that you want to live your life spending the maximum amount of time doing the most important things (and the least amount of time doing the least important things).
Make a list of everything you did this past week and record it all, not just the big things but everything you can remember. Then assign each of these items to one of 4 boxes:
Box 1 – Import things that I have no choice doing.
Box 2 – Things important to others and not to me.
Box 3 – Time-wasting unimportant junk, e.g. crappy TV.
Box 4 – Super important things that I don’t do enough of.
I recommend that you take Box 3 out to the curb. Take Box 2 to the attic in case you need or choose to use stuff from it now and again. Box 1 will need to be sorted a bit and prioritized, but will be close at hand. The last, Box #4, deserves to placed prominently in the living room and accessed as often as you can.
One more thing: remember to stand up to stretch periodically, and while you’re at that take some deep breaths. It will feel great, help you process your thoughts more clearly, and will help you charge your batteries. As you know, you can never have too many charged batteries this time of year.

A Very Good Year: Stolen bike replaced by stranger
Last year was one of new opportunity, growth, loss and the good will of strangers for one Cardinal Carter High School Student.
Raven Pozsgai was not sure what to expect when Rick Gori first suggested a January 2011 co-op placement at Ruffins Pet Center. While she wanted to be able to work around animals, she was not sure that working within a retail environment was what she had in mind.
Gori was Cardinal Carter’s traditional co-op teacher at the time. Raven had approach him with an interest in getting workplace experience, ideally with animals through placement with a local animal hospital. Unfortunately, the only animal hospital within walking distance already had their co-op positions filled with students from other area high schools.
“At first Raven was not convinced about the placement, but after meeting Roger and getting to know how passionate he was about his store, his customers and the animals, she quickly began to thrive in the environment,” said Gori, now the Student Success Teacher at Cardinal Carter.
Roger Elliott, owner of the Ruffins’ franchise at 275 Erie St. S., was managing the location when Raven began her co-op experience.
“Early on Raven rarely looked up and seemed a bit shy. Now she is one of my most valued and knowledgeable employees. She proved to be a quick-study and is great with customer service, always wanting to help whenever she can. She would stay more hours than required, giving of her own time in order to learn the job. It was definitely a winwin situation,” said Elliott.
“All I knew was I really wanted to do my coop around animals. At first when it was with the pet store, I was kind of like, ‘I
don’t know,’ but it worked out, obviously.” Raven smiles.
One of the busy student’s goals was to get herself a bike so that she would not have to walk everywhere. She saved her money and bought a beautiful, new green bike. Her joy however was short-lived when a mere six weeks after buying the bike, it was stolen off the enclosed front porch of her Orange St. home.
“I didn’t have it locked to the house, but it was locked so that no one could ride off with it. I was already having one of those mornings and then when I went out to ride to work, my bike was gone. I was really upset, late to work and cried a lot,” Raven said.
When she got to the store
she immediately headed to the washroom to regain her composure before facing the boss. Elliott could see she was shaken and comforted her as she told her story. However, he wasn’t the only one listening.
“Shortly after the incident, I got a call from someone who was shopping in the store that day. The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, asked about Raven and her character and then said he would like to replace the stolen bike. Within a couple of weeks, he brought a new mountain bike that his daughter had helped him choose to the store,” said Elliott.
Elliott’s wife, Chris Rivest, went to school to pick up Raven. Being picked up at school by the
boss’s wife is not an everyday experience and initially the surprised student was afraid she might have done something wrong.
Presented with the new bike, tears of joy replaced the young girl’s worry and sadness. “I wish I could give that man a big hug. Good people like him can really make up for the bad ones,” she said.
Shortly after getting the new bike, Raven got herself a brand new Black Lab puppy she called Kinder. It was somehow appropriate that she end the year with a pet of her own.
Raven continues to work at Ruffins and attend school at Cardinal Carter High. She would recommend the coop programs to others, still trying to decide what to do with the rest of their lives. For her, it has been a very good year.
In this season, when we rush about, sometimes experiencing less than the best of good will towards all men, it is nice to know that simple acts of kindness are still making big differences in the lives of others, whether by taking on a coop student or anonymously taking care of another down on luck.

Wednesday, December 14th: LaSalle 4 – Flyers 3
The Flyers road struggles continued last week when they were edged 4-3 by their crosscounty rivals the LaSalle Vipers. They have only managed to win one road game in their last seven attempts.
The Flyers took the lead twice but sloppy play in the defensive zone and a lack of momentum throughout the game allowed the Vipers come out on top.
“I think that in LaSalle we got away from our game plan,” said Flyers captain Ron Soucie.
“We weren’t winning battles and competing like we should, especially against a rival like LaSalle. In order for us to be successful we need to outwork the other team and we didn’t do that Wednesday. We made too many mental mistakes.”
The Flyers got goals from Nick Nicodemo, Alex Seguin and Tyler Quigley while Cheyne Matheson picked up two assists. Rookie goaltender Darien Ekblad made 20 saves.
Nearly 300 teddy bears were thrown last Thursday during the annual Teddy Bear Toss game. All items collected were donated to Toys For Tots in Leamington to benefit less fortunate children. Members of the Southpoint Novice Major team, Rhine Danube Pee Wee Girls team and Lions Club Intermediate girls team retrieved the bears from the ice.
Thursday, December 15th Flyers 3 – Chatham 1
Nick nicodemo has 8 points in the last 4 games including the Flyers first goal on Thursday night that sent the teddy bears flying.
Seguin’s Point Streak At 22 games
Alex Seguin’s goal against LaSalle extended his point streak to 22 games but he was injured on hit later in the game and was forced out of action Thursday night, putting his point streak on hold until he returns to the lineup.
Upcoming Games:
HOME:
Thurs, Dec 22 vs Lambton Shores 7:10 pm Thursday, Jan 5 vs Strathroy 7:10 pm AWAY: Wednesday, Jan 4 @ London 7:00 pm
On Thursday the Flyers got their fifth consecutive win at home beating the Chatham Maroons 3-1 during the annual Teddy Bear Toss game. Former Flyer Burke D’Souza opened the scoring for Chatham but Nick Nicodemo sent nearly 300 teddy bears flying to the ice when he tied the game towards the end of the first.
“The teddy bear toss is a pretty big deal for the team, city and us players too,” said Nicodemo, who has 8 points in the last 4 games. “There’s usually a big crowd so it was nice to score and get the place fired up. We also have a little friendly competition in the room who can get the first goal so there's some bragging rights that come along with it too.”
In addition to Nicodemo, Jacob Henrikson and Cheyne Matheson also scored while Ron Soucie chipped in with two assists. Goalie Colin Greeley made 21 saves earning his 10th win of the season.
“On Thursday we came out with a lot more fire. I think that guys were angry about the loss the night before and had something to prove,” Soucie said. “We had a good start and had a great forecheck all night. Our forwards did a great job in the offensive end and had a great backcheck all night. I thought that every player had a great effort and no one took a shift off. If we have efforts like that every night we will be a difficult team to beat.”
The Flyers next game is on Thursday when the Lambton Shores Predators come to town. It is the last game until the new year.

NOTES: Injury Update: Eric Leardi returned to action last week after being sidelined with an ankle injury. Mitchell Amante and Alex Seguin (shoulder) did not play in Thursday’s game but they are likely to play this week…Colin Greeley still holds the top Goals Against Average (2.74) in the Western Conference…The Flyers are averaging more than 40 shots per game, fourth most in the GOJHL and first in the Western Conference. On the flip side, they are allowing the least amount of shots per game in the Western Conference with an average of 31 shots.

Two wins and a tie for Peewee
Majors
It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Peewee Major Hockey team. A week ago Saturday started off with a tie against the Kent Cobras followed by a win against the Erie North Shore Storm Sunday. On Friday, they travelled to LaSalle and came away with a hard fought close victory.
On Sat. Dec. 10 the Kent Cobras came to the Heinz rink looking to show the Capitals that their previous 4-1 victory in Chatham was no mistake. The Capitals, however, wanted to prove they are worthy opponents to the AA Cobras. With 3 minutes remaining in the first period the Cobras opened the scoring. One minute later the Capitals evened the score with a nifty goal by Rory DiNiro set up by Ryan Wall. The Cobras regained the lead in the second to make it 2-1. Early in the third, DiNiro scored his second of the night with an assist going to Zack Dillen to knot the game at 2. With a flurry of powerplay shots coming from the point, the Capitals were unable to get the go ahead goal and the game finished off 2-2. Cristian Santos played a solid game in net as the Gabriele’s Capitals outshot Kent 24-15.
On Sun. Dec. 11 the Capitals hosted the Erie North Shore Storm in their final meeting of the regular season. So far the Capitals have been in the driver’s seat having won all three of their regular season contests; however, it has not been without a fight from a strong Storm team. In a fairly quiet game, Southpoint seemed to take control early on. Not able to net one in the first period the Capitals came out of the second scoring three unanswered goals. DiNiro potted the first from Dawson Iles and Luc Ribble, while Z. Dillen scored the second from Brennan Hancock and Camden Driedger. The final goal of the period came from Iles assisted by Evan Loveless. The third period was similar to the first as the game ended up 3-0 in the Capitals favour. Tyler Dillen made some timely saves throughout the game as the Capitals outshot the Storm 23-8.
Fri. Dec. 16 had the Capitals taking on the LaSalle Sabres at the Vollmer Centre. With the top two teams in the Bluewater league going head to head it was sure to be a hard fought game. The first period was scoreless although both teams had some good opportunities to score. Midway through the second period, Bret Predhomme netted his first goal of the game making it 1-0 for the Capitals unassisted. In the third period LaSalle evened up the score as they were able to take advantage of a powerplay opportunity with about 5 minutes remaining in the third. Late in the third period the Capitals were able to kill off a 5 on 3 only to come back and score a power play marker of their own to put the team up 2-1. Bret Predhomme netted his second of the game assisted by Darrin DiMenna and DiNiro with 30 seconds remaining in the game, and the Gabriele’s Capitals were able to secure their mark on the top of the Bluewater standings. It was an excellent effort between the pipes by Cristian Santos as the Captials were outshot 21 to 17.
The Gabriele’s Capitals next action will be in the Watford Silverstick on Tues. Dec. 27 where the Caps take on the Woodstock Navy Vets.
The Gabriele’s Southpoint Capitals Peewee Major team would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!
AMCO Farms Sewer Service
Municipal Council has agreed to enter into an agreement with AMCO Farms and AMCO Storage for an expanded sanitary sewage connection.
The agreement will see the entire cost of the expansion covered by the owner, and also will cause the properties to be re-designated into the ‘urban’ tax rate since both will be serviced with sanitary sewers.
Windsor Symphony Orchestra Event
After this season’s final performance in Leamington on February 4, 2012, a special reception will be held at the Leamington Arts Centre at municipal Council’s expense to say farewell to the musical director of the Windsor Symphony, John Morris Russell.
John has accepted a position with the Cincinnati Orchestra and this event will be an opportunity to acknowledge his contribution to the Windsor Symphony and his efforts to extend its musical reach out into the county. Leamington Council agreed to donate $1000 toward the event and a gift for Mr. Russell.
On Sat. Dec. 17, the Gabriele’s Peewee Majors spread holiday cheer throughout the community by delivering gift baskets for the Goodfellows. Assistant coach Stephan Taylor is pictured talking delivery strategy with Goodfellows volunteer Al Matthews.
Curling season nears halfway point
By Gordon Wonnick
As we approach the last half of the curling season, we do so with much enthusiasm and are very optimistic about the future.
The first half of the season has been very successful, in particular for those curling teams that frequently participate in bonspiels in the region. I have reported many victories in previous articles for both female and male curlers, as a matter of fact someone said to me recently, “How come you never report losses?” I don’t report them because in my opinion they are not newsworthy. I should mention, however, that when a victory is reported there are usually other Sun Parlour teams that were not quite as fortunate – I wouldn’t want anyone to think that Sun Parlour teams never lose.
Here I go again: recently a team skipped by Lionel Aasen supported by Earl Dunmore, John McGregor and Warren Dunford participated in the Detroit Senior bonspiel and ended up as winners of their draw. They were the only Sun Parlour team participating. Also, 6 of the senior teams participated in a seniors bonspiel in Kingsville this past Saturday. Several of the teams won both their games; however, the only team ending up in second spot was the team skipped by Doug Scott assisted by Lee Penfold, Warren Dunford and Rob Johnson. They missed first place by ½ a point. Last week I mentioned that the junior curlers were having a great time. There are usually about 20 kids under 16 that come out and get good instruction from Doug Uyseugi and his helpers, but just as important they have a really good time. I recently wrote an article regarding an exciting new game called Sturling. Early in the new year, the Sun Parlour Curling Club will be conducting some free clinics to anyone that has an interest. The important feature of this game is that it opens up a curling-type game to everyone, people with some physical issues who cannot kneel to throw a rock or are unable to sweep as well as able-bodied people. The club is excited about the possibility of having new members that were perhaps unable to join previously. Keep watching for much more news on this in future articles. This will be the last article before the New Year, so on behalf of everyone at the Sun Parlour Curling Club we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Sixty-two golfers enjoyed a buffet breakfast and then participated in the last weekly golf of 2011 at Colasanti’s. 104 aces over 36 holes were recorded on this day with Don Ribble, Bill Taylor, Ernie Vandenberg and Frank Lasi leading the pack with 4 each. Close behind with 3 each were Eleanor Brook, Marg Ross, Audrey Knox, Donna Wiebe, Mary McRae, Pat Womack, Bill Ward, Eleanor Wilkinson, Iggy Arner, Kathy Bradley, Lloyd Honey, Bill Mayville and Stan Vickery. Two each dropped for Julia Kos, Bryon Walker, Cam Keith, Barry Sweet, Mary Binder, Linda Walsh, Mary Ann Vickery, Colleen Pearse, Tom Hyatt, Gerry Wilkinson, Rose Taylor, Art Sweet, Elaine Hatt, Gerrit Vriesen, Murray Knox, Marg Graham and Gary Honey. Singles went to Moe Scratch, Pete Daudlin, Ken Brook, Betty McManus, Steve Vigh, Cheryl Allan, Winnie Moore, John Murphy, Shirley Thiessen, Jim Accan, Andy Orsini, Duane McIntosh, Dorothy Harrow, Eva Kah and John Murphy. Lowest round for day on 36 holes was Bill Taylor with a 73 and 34 for 18. Don Ribble, Pete Daudlin and Iggy Arner all recorded 75. Gerry Wilkinson had a 76.
First place with 232 went to team 3 with Pete Daudlin, Ken Brook and Doug Vickery. Second place with 233 was team Jacks with Colleen Pearse, Gerry Wilkinson and Tom Hyatt. Third place with a 235 went to team 8 with Winnie Moore, Mary Ann Vickery, John Murphy and Bill Taylor. Golf will resume on January 12th, 2012. The Golden Years Mini Golf family wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2012.
Novice Majors play two close games
The Southpoint Capitals Novice Majors had a busy weekend with two very close games.
The Capitals met the Ravens in Essex on Saturday, December 17 in a fierce match resulting in a 3-2 win for Essex. Both teams were giving it their all both offensively and defensively in a pretty tough challenge.
Southpoint’s first goal was scored in the second by Austin Neufeld (30) and was assisted by Jason Daraiche (10). The Capitals’ second goal was scored by Thomas Jennings (38) in the third and was assisted by Michael Vida (6). Alex Jadischke (24), one of Southpoint’s defenseman, challenged the Ravens offensive players by thwarting on a number of their plays. He earned the Capitals’ Hard Hat to lead Southpoint as their Captain in Sunday’s game against Erie North Shore.
Southpoint faced-off against Erie North Shore once again Sunday, December 18. These two teams have a bit of a rivalry with one another and it clearly showed in the exciting match they displayed for their families watching. Final score 1-0 Erie North Shore.
Michael Vida (6) earned the Capitals’ Hard Hat for playing his forward position with such determination by taking risks and challenging the Storm’s players head-to-head. He’ll lead the team as Captain after Christmas in their game against LaSalle on December 30 at 5 p.m.
Peewee Minors drop Tecumseh, lose to LaSalle
The Reid Funeral Home PeeWee Minor hockey team had two tough games this weekend against teams that were ahead of them in the standings.
On Saturday they were home against the first place LaSalle Sabres. The Sabres were a big, fast, good skating team. The Caps had to play their best to stay in this one. After both teams were unable to score in the opening period, the Sabres connected first just 27 seconds into the second period. They extended their lead three minutes later making it 2-0. Both goals were beauties, one was a shot that ricocheted off the post and in, and the other was wired into the top of the net over Matt Ciliska’s shoulder.
The Caps made it 2-1 shortly after when Jeron Kir fired one in with Gioia DiCiocco and Corinne Jackson assisting. Four minutes after the Caps goal the Sabres extended their lead by two again, scoring on a mini breakaway. The game was hard fought for the last 20 minutes.
Ciliska had a stellar night in goal keeping the Caps within striking distance in the third but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and fell short with a final score of 3-1.
Sunday they traveled to Tecumseh to battle the Eagles. The Caps came out of the gates quick potting the first goal of the game just over three minutes in, when Carter Mastronardi fired one in from the right wing. Mason Gow set up the goal with a nice pass. The Caps made it 2-0 less than a minute later when Joe Alfano knocked in a lose puck.
A minute into the second the Caps added to their lead when Tyler Zsebok poked one past the sprawling Eagles net-minder. Spencer Wiebe and Myles Theissen assisted on the goal. Zsebok got his second of the game after some hard work chasing down an open puck and driving the net. His initial shot was stopped but he had the skill to reach out and bang in his own rebound. Thiessen and Jackson assisted on the goal.
The Eagles turned up the heat and were rewarded with two goals late in the second. They scored their third 5 minutes into the third period, getting to within one goal of the locals.
The Caps worked hard to keep the puck out as Tecumseh tried feverishly for the equalizer. They were not able to get one past Tristan Edmundson as he stood strong in the late goings to preserve a hard fought 4-3 victory.
The Caps go into the Christmas break with a 9-6-5 record in league play. Well done kids!
M MUUN NIIT T YY AAW WAAR REEN NEES SSS:
“Oh there's no place like home for the holidays, 'Cause no matter how far away you roam, If you want to be happy in a million ways, For the holidays, you can't beat home sweet home.”
Our homes are wonderful places to spend the holidays, oftentimes full of joyous memories of Christmases past. While snowflakes fall softly onto the ground outside, we wrap ourselves in warm blankets in front of the soft glow of fireplace light, sip our favourite hot beverages and listen to the comforting sounds of traditional Christmas hymns floating across the radio waves.
However, this festive time of year also marks the beginning of colder temperatures and harsh weather conditions, which often result in difficulties for our elderly loved ones, especially those still living in their own homes. Not only does snow need to be shoveled from driveways and walkways, but salt should be spread to prevent slips and falls, stairways and handrails should be in good re-
pair, windows and doors should be checked for cracked or worn sealants, light fixtures should be checked for burnt bulbs, and interior spaces should be clean and uncluttered.
It’s a simple fact of life that, as we age, biological changes place us at a greater risk of falling and injuring ourselves. These changes may include osteoporosis, poor balance, diminished strength, mobility changes and sensory changes such as vision and hearing loss. According to a Health Canada report entitled Healthy Aging: Prevention of Unintentional Injuries Among Seniors, “While seniors comprise only 12% of the Canadian population, they account for 35% of all injury hospitalizations.” These risks are compounded when the home environments of older adults are not well maintained. In fact, Health Canada reports that “Environmental factors account for one third to one half of all falls among seniors.” Fortunately, their research also shows that “Environmental modifications to the home have been shown to reduce falls requiring medical attention by 55% over 24 months.”
This is where the South Essex Community Council can help you or a loved one. Our Home Maintenance & Repair program has

been assisting seniors, those with disabilities and those with medical conditions in keeping their homes clean, comfortable and safe for over two years now. Whether it`s a single job that needs finishing, such as a heavy clean or an odd job, or more routine work that needs to be done, such as snow shoveling or repair work, feel free to call us and we`ll screen and find the right service provider for your needs. Here is what clients are saying about the program:
“My kids are all busy and I didn’t know who to turn to. I’m glad to have the help.”
“This service is a real God send. I’m just delighted with it!”
“I was pleasantly surprised, more people should know about this program!”
“Our services are just going fantastically. Our cleaner is punctual, thorough and we are so lucky to have her.”
“Don’t drop the program! We need it and like it a lot! Our handyman is great and he’s such a nice guy.”
“I am entirely grateful for my worker; she has been an answer to my prayers and an angel without wings.”
If you’re thinking of braving the cold this winter and completing outdoor work for yourself or a loved one, try doing some warm-up exercises before getting started, as cold weather can put added strain on your heart. Take frequent breaks and remember to dress in warm layers and loose fitted clothing. And don’t forget to wear gloves and a hat, as they help prevent heat loss from the body. However, for those of you needing a little extra help this winter season, feel free to give us a call or visit one of our office locations:

St. Louis boys win B division volleyball championship
The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board recently held its Elementary School Volleyball Championships at the University of Windsor. Representing the area were the Queen of Peace girls, the St. Louis boys, and the St. John de Brebeuf boys. Each had won local tournaments in order to qualify for the Final Four in Windsor.
Of the three, St. Louis was the only team to qualify for the championship matches by going undefeated in pool play and then winning its quarter-final and semi-final matches. Other teams in St. Louis’s pool were St. Gregory from St. Clair Beach, St. Peter from Tecumseh, and Christ the King from Windsor.
In the final, the Crusaders downed St. Peter in two straight games 20-15 and 20-9 to complete an undefeated season and claim the championship.
The St. Louis team is coached by Rosemary Gebrail and Earl Skidmore.

Community Improvement
Grant for the Mill Street neighbourhood
The Youth & Family Resource Network of Essex County is calling for applications to a community improvement grant for the Mill Street neighbourhood in Leamington.
This neighbourhood is the focus of the Neighbours Helping Neighbours program, funded by United Way Windsor-Essex County, and is bordered to the east by Erie Street South, to the north by Talbot Street East, to the west by Lutsch Street, and to the south by Oak Street.

The priority is to support projects that have widereaching effects within a neighbourhood and will impact families, children, and adults in a positive way.
The grant money will be administered by South Essex Community Council and a committee of community members will review the applications and make the final funding decisions.
Application forms and further details can be found at www.resourcenetwork. ca/neighbours.php or by contacting the program at neighbours@resourcenetwork.ca. Mistletoe and holly: holiday favourites
Mistletoe and holly are traditional evergreens for decoration during the holidays.
In the In the Back Yard... Back Yard...
Mistletoe is not native to our growing area and can only be found in West Virginia and southern states. This plant is very unique, whereas it does not grow on the ground but grows in branches and trunks of deciduous trees such as maple, sycamore, beech, ash, elm and oak. In the autumn after the host tree has lost its leaves, mistletoe can be easily seen as a dense shrub-like evergreen in the mid to upper branches, almost looking like a squirrel or bird nest.
The old tradition during the holiday season was for men to steal a kiss from women under the mistletoe plant and remove a single berry until all the berries were gone. Mistletoe berries were also used for toothaches and treatment of wounds.
Today this decorative plant can be purchased at most retail floral outlets. Enjoy mistletoe this season, but follow the safety instructions as the berries are poisonous if eaten and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
Holly, on the other hand, can be grown locally in our gardens and is still the most popular evergreen for decoration. Holly plants require full sun and well-drained, organic, acidic soil. In order to produce berries, female plants need a male plant growing within 30 feet for pollination.
Pruning holly plants is also important in order for the plant to produce lots of leaves during late summer and fall. Protect the plants with chicken wire during the winter because this is a favorite meal for rabbits.
If your plant is producing few berries, this is because of poor pollination, high nitrogen in the soil or late frost damage to the blossoms in the spring.
Hollies don’t like to be moved and transplanted once established. Purchase small plants and plant them in a permanent location. If it is necessary to relocate an established plant, dig out a large root ball in late winter or early spring while the plant is still dormant.
I recommend planting 6-8 individual holly plants in one area for several reasons: first to help guarantee proper pollination and second to allow you to have enough branches for your decorations without taking too much from any one plant.
When selecting holly, read the instructions carefully. There are many varieties and many are not hardy to growing zones below 5, which is Southern Ontario. Colder areas will require wind protection from the drying winter winds. Most holly varieties are evergreen
and have red berries which attract birds, squirrels and deer throughout the winter.
From my family to yours, a very healthy and happy Holiday Season!
