By Mark Ribble With files from Paul Forman The Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed that the storm that hit Wheatley on the evening of September 3 was indeed a tornado.

In fact, it was two-fold in that an EF-1 tornado and an EF-1 downburst both contributed to the damage in the village that night.

The tornado hit Windsor late in the afternoon and continued its destructive path in a southeasterly direction, putting Wheatley in its crosshairs as it approached.

Some of the worst damage occurred at the north end of town near Weil’s Food Processing, where two semi trucks were flipped, and continued southeast, taking trees, gazebos, trampolines — and anything else not nailed down — with it.

Along Erie Street South, a large tree fell across the road, while branches from other trees dotted the landscape. The carnage continued along most of the side streets in that area and also in the Klondyke Road area, where trees were down on houses, vehicles and backyard sheds.

Talbot Trail Golf Course immediately put a post on social media saying they were closed for the night and needed to assess the damage to the course. A drive by the course confirmed there were several trees down. They were closed for the majority of the Labour Day weekend.

Volunteer crews were out at the course over the weekend helping with cleanup.

Conservation Area on Saturday.

A little further south, Wheatley Provincial Park was hit hard with several large trees down and

about 100 camping families taking cover from the storm. Roads inside the park were clogged with several downed trees. The park currently remains

closed until September 11.

According to the Northern Tornadoes Project, the Wheatley tornado developed between Road 7 and Road 8 north of town and continued in a southeasterly direction, ending along Bluff Line east of Campers Cove, while the downburst’s worst damage occurred near the intersection of Drover’s Road and Hillside. The downburst’s time of arrival was 4:45 pm, while the tornado touched down three minutes later at 4:48 pm. Regardless of the path taken by the storm, the widespread impact was felt all over Wheatley as trees and fences were down as far west as Foster Avenue and even as far south as Pulley Road. Damage was also reported to the north along Mersea Road 7.

Annual Kidney Walk raises over $13,000

By Paul Forman Held for a second time in Kingsville at Lakeside Park, this year’s Kidney Walk blew past its fundraising goal and will support The Kidney Founda-

tion of Canada to the tune of $13,343.

Kicking off with a health fair and live music from Hannah Renee, participants chose from either a one kilometre or five kilo-

metre route on the park grounds, or traversed a two-and-a-half kilometre accessible route on the park’s top portion.

This walk was the first of 30 held across Ontario this

fall and will provide vital funds for research, patient care, public awareness and education for a disease that affects over four million people across Canada.

“Our walkers are what makes this happen,” said Van Wattegham. “Thanks to our fabulous kidney community and all those that volunteered. These events not only raise money, but allow those living with the disease to share stories about the journeys that all are on.”

By Paul Forman Now an established Labour Day weekend tradition in Leamington, The S’Aints Annual Rock Seacliff to Fight Hunger concert attracted a crowd that filled the hill, and raised a record breaking $15,154 for the Leamington Food Bank.

by The Bank Theatre, the concert featured an allstar band, led by hometown rock star Jody Raffoul, Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows, Big Sugar’s Kelly “Mr. Chill” Hoppe on the sax and harmonica, along with seven other accomplished musicians that brought

a heavy dose of Canadiana to the park with their covers of The Hip, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, Neil Young and Alannah Myles.

Having raised over $700,000 in the Windsor/Essex County area over the years, The S’Aints and volunteers from The Bank Theatre also collected canned

goods and hygiene items before the performance, all in an attempt to make a dent in the food insecurity that affects a quarter of the population in our local region.

Officials were still counting donations at press time, so it is expected that total will rise.

Memories of back-to-school times in the 1960s and 70s Well, Labour Day weekend has come and gone and its time for the return to school for all the youngsters in the area.

I remember my first day like it was…. um, not yesterday.

It was 1967, in fact. I was six years old and heading off to Gore Hill for Grade 1. My brother Pat was heading into Grade 8, and so we only spent one school year together in the same school. My older siblings were already in high school at that point.

Mr. Sidney Jones was the bus driver for that Point Pelee, Concessions D and E route for all of the

years I went to Gore Hill.

Miss Wass would turn out to be my Grade 1 teacher. The rural schools didn’t have Kindergarten until a couple of years later, although my city-dwelling cousin, Diane Gow, graduated from Kindergarten at Selkirk school a couple years before that.

My first friend was Henry Steeman, who sat with me on the bus that first day. We picked him up along Noble Sideroad in one of the last stops before the school. Henry remains a friend to this day, although I haven’t seen him in a number of

years.

Other friends I met in those first few months included Tim Tetzlaff, Tracy Wiper, Troy Wiper Craig Antoniuk and Ed Dick. Lee Jackson and John Reimer came along in Grade 2 or 3, I think.

Carl Guenzel and Steve Faucette also come to mind, but both moved away before we graduated out of Gore Hill.

Can’t forget the girls, of course. Tracy Young, Cheryl Dunmore, Abby Driedger and Debbie Ropchan were among the girls who I met on the first day. I remain friends with all but Abby, who passed

A 1926 Studebaker story

In 1852, Henry and Clem Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana, began building covered wagons to cash in on the westward tide of settlement following the discovery of gold in California in 1849. Exactly 50 years later, their company built its first car and kept building cars until the last Studebaker built in Hamilton in 1966.

Our feature car is a 1926 Studebaker roadster seen in Alberta with a woman behind the wheel. This car was probably built in the Studebaker factory in Windsor, which began with Studebakers built there in 1913.

The car is two-tone with black fenders and a lighter body.

So those were our Gore Hill Gators long before they were ever called Gators.

My Grade 2 teacher was Mrs. Knox, and in Grade 3 we had Mrs. Campbell.

Grade 4 was Mrs Fagan, and in Grade 5 Mr. Murray Cameron. This group finished off our Gore Hill education with Mrs. Grubb as our final Grade 6 teacher before heading off to Mill Street Senior Public School — something we all dreaded based on rumours, but we actually all did fine there.

I can honestly recall each and every classroom at Gore Hill, and a couple of years ago I was there reading to a couple of the classes on Reading Day where local “celebrities” come in to read to students. Visiting those classrooms and seeing them laid out much the same as they were in the early 1970s was a breath of fresh air.

Their early hit singles in 1971 included “Fast Train” and “Listen Mister”, while a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “You Could Have Been a Lady” that was a big hit in 1972, going to #1 in Canada.

In 1974, they ended the year with one of their biggest hits, “I’m On Fire For You Baby”.

In 1975, by far their most popular hits, “I Wouldn’t Want To Lose Your Love” and “Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love” were big single releases.

The album — Stand Back — went on to sell over 250,000 copies.

Annual dog show attracts about 140 competitors

By Mark Ribble The annual dog show co-hosted by the Windsor All Breed Training and Tracking Club and the Essex County Kennel Club started off soggy but ended the Labour Day weekend on a dry note as the sun came out and the pups flourished on the Colasanti’s grounds.

According to Sharon Johnson, secretary for both organizations, the

shows attracted about 140 dogs and their handlers over the weekend.

The show featured eight all-breed Conformation Dog Shows throughout the weekend and also two Rally Obedience Trials, which occurred Saturday afternoon and attracted 20 rally teams.

Even the youngsters got involved, with four junior competitors presenting during the show.

The dogs and their handlers were resilient as Friday’s rain impeded the outdoor event, but they managed to get their dogs out between raindrops for a great showing. Saturday and Sunday both provided great weather for the pooches to strut their stuff and those in attendance were appreciative of their showmanship.

Thiessen Orchards celebrates 50 years of apple picking Five decades of family traditions continue at one of Leamington’s favourite fall destinations.

Essex County’s favourite fall traditions.

Today, thousands of visitors return every fall to experience the orchard, many bringing children and grandchildren to continue traditions that began decades ago.

“We’re seeing families now who came here as kids bringing their own children,” says Andrew Thiessen. “That’s probably the most rewarding part. This farm has become part of so many family memories.”

Andrew and his wife Krissy became the third generation to own and operate Thiessen Orchards in 2012. Since then, they’ve continued to grow the family destination while staying true to what has made the orchard special for generations.

For generations, a trip to Thiessen Orchards has been a sure sign that fall has arrived in Leamington. Families have climbed aboard wagon rides, picked apples straight from the trees, enjoyed mouthwatering apple fritters and homemade pie and watched children race toward playgrounds, slides, farm animals and more.

This year, the Thiessen family is celebrating 50 years of pick-your-own apples in Leamington.

While apple picking began in 1976, the family’s story reaches back even further.

The orchard traces its roots to 1926, when Jacob Thiessen immigrated to Canada from Ukraine and established the family farm. Years later, his son Peter and daughter-in-law Gloria helped shape the orchard into something special.

In 1975, Gloria placed a wagon of fresh apples beside the road to sell to passing motorists. The response was immediate, and one year later the family officially opened Pick-Your-Own Apples, creating what would become one of

While apple picking remains at the heart of the experience, the farm has expanded into a full day of family fun.

Visitors can enjoy playgrounds, farm animals, the largest Jump Pad in Windsor-Essex, Sally the Super Slide, the Fun Acre, pumpkin patch, corn maze, wagon rides and new kidsized diggers for the 2026 season.

The orchard has also become a destination for food lovers.

Guests return every fall for homemade apple pie, fresh apple fritters, caramel and candy apples, and the orchard’s famous Mennonite sausage served from the Kountry Kitchen.

“For us, it’s always been about creating a place where families can spend quality time together,” says Krissy

Thiessen. “We love seeing people make Thiessen Orchards part of their fall tradition, year after year.”

The season also features the extremely popular Halloween Extravaganza, which will take place Saturday, October 24, complete with trick-or-treating, live entertainment, a magician and family-friendly activities.

To mark the orchard’s 50th anniversary, Thiessen’s will host a special celebration on Saturday, September 12, featuring a complimentary apple fritter with admission (while supplies last), face painting, live entertainment and additional activities throughout the day.

The 2026 season runs from September 10 through October 31, welcoming visitors back for another autumn filled with yummy apples, great food and family memories.

As the Thiessen family celebrates 50 years of apple picking, one thing hasn’t changed.

Afternoon barbecue raises $$$ for museum

By Paul Forman With the summer school break winding down, Dennis Rogers called upon the 2nd Kingsville Scouts to see if they could barbecue some hotdogs and burgers to raise some money for the Kingsville Military Museum’s proposed expansion.

Setting up beside Legion Branch 188 on September 3, leaders and kids from 2nd Kingsville Scouts were joined by Rogers for the fundraiser, along with some musical accompaniment from the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment Pipes and Drums.

Bruce Peacock, Chair of the Kingsville Military Museum’s Board of Directors, was excited to see the youngsters making an effort on the museum’s behalf.

February 21, 1934 - September 1, 2026 Elsie Jane Smith (nee Siddall), age 92, passed away peacefully at Franklin Gardens Long Term Care Home surrounded by family. Elsie is now reunited with her husband of 70 years John, who predeceased her in 2023.

Born on February 21, 1934, Elsie was predeceased by her parents the late Clare and Sarah Siddall and by her siblings, the late Harold Siddall (late Marjorie), the late Irene Wilkinson (late Glen), the late Ross Siddall ( Judy). The late Ruby Lindsay (late Jim) and the late Ken Siddall ( Janet).

Loving mother to her children Linda Segedin (Ken), Bruce Smith (Amber) and Rob Smith (Henrietta Berkers).

Elsie loved playing cards, country music and going to the dances with John. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Free backpacks for kids

By Paul Forman With a new school year upon us, children in Kingsville had an opportunity to pick up a new backpack and a few supplies for a fresh start on their academic journey.

Youth Unlimited YFC Kingsville opened the doors of their Anchor Youth Centre in the East Kingsville Square on September 2 to give

away 100 backpacks that were generously donated by Kingsville Home Hardware Building Centre.

Youth Unlimited YFC Kingsville has been providing outreach to Kingsville youth for school lunches, sports programs and drop-ins for a little over a year now, both at Erie Migration District School, and at their newest loca-

tion found on 313 Main Street East.

Satellite Director of Youth Unlimited YFC Kingsville Tim Dyck was on hand at the backpack giveaway and extended an invitation to the public to join him and many of his volunteers for a Youth Unlimited fundraising event that will take place at the Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre on November 14.

Their small but eye-catching garden is anchored by two Japanese maples, several smaller trees and a large maple. White dipladenia fill the window boxes, while impatiens and hostas flank the front and garage doors. Red roses, shrubs, river rocks and a fall-flowering clematis complete this lively display.

CHATHAM-KENT WATER AND WASTEWATER MASTER PLAN UPDATE STUDY The Public Utilities Commission for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK PUC) is undertaking a Water and Wastewater Master Plan (WWWMP) Update Study following Approach #1.

The Study is being prepared in accordance with the Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) requirements for Master Plans (MPs).

The study will review previous capital plans, identify additional capital upgrades, and assess infrastructure requirements to support future growth to the estimated full build-out scenario beyond 2051, while continuing to improve servicing to existing users. The servicing solutions will be designed to be financially, socially and environmentally sustainable.

Purpose of Public Information Centre (PIC) #2 Figure 1: Study Area PIC#2 will provide an update on projected growth, water demands and wastewater flows in each municipal water and wastewater system, present evaluation criteria, identify alternative servicing strategies, and next steps.

Kids’ Day at Raceway brings plenty of fun

By Mark Ribble Kids Day at Leamington Raceway was packed with families wanting to get in on the prize giveaways and wanting to see the horses up close and personal.

The day featured face painting, bicycle giveaways and many other children’s activities and wrapped up with a pony race featuring children of some

of the drivers at the raceway.

The Lakeshore Harness Racing Association and the horsemen themselves donated 16 bicycles and 18 other toys to raffle off, and each child was given a free entry ticket upon arrival. Two t-shirt tosses garnered about 20 kids Leamington Raceway t-shirts.

The Young Gunz Pony Race featured seven youngsters with

miniature sulky bikes steering seven ponies from the back stretch to the finish line. The race was won by 14-year-old Chase Graham aboard a pony named Firefly. The youngest driver in the race was six-year-old Owen Steward, who drove Lady to a sixth-place finish.

Three time champs for Lakers 10U squad

By Mark Ribble The 10U Leamington Lakers have scored a three-peat in their quest for Ontario baseball gold.

The Lakers moved up a classification this year and competed in the OBA “A” division against some of the larger centres and still came away champions.

The squad won the OBA “B” titles the past two seasons in the 8U and 9U age divisions.

Head coach Steve O’Neil was proud of his team for their accomplishments.

“This season was something I’ll never forget and I can sit back and say all 13 boys contributed to this title,” he said. “It’s a remarkable accomplishment and something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”

Their quest for gold began on Thursday, September 3 as they travelled to Cambridge to compete in the OBA “A” 10U championship event.

They kicked off the tournament Thursday afternoon with a decisive 14-2 win over the Sarnia Brigade.

On Friday, the Lakers continued their stellar

play with a 10-0 whitewash of the Kanata Cubs and a 13-2 win over the Vaughn Vikings.

Saturday’s competition got a little tougher as the Lakers came up against a strong St. Catherines Cobras team. The game remained scoreless through the first four-anda-half innings before the Lakers broke through in the bottom of the fifth and took a 2-0 lead into the sixth. The Cobras coiled up and struck back in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs of their own.

The heroics came in the bottom of the seventh when Easton O’Neil led off by reaching first on an error by the right fielder, and made it to third base on a sac bunt by Conor Cobby.

It was Tate Getty’s single that scored O’Neil and kept the Lakers undefeated on a walk-off.

On Sunday, the Lakers faced the Uxbridge Grizzlies and beat them 10-4 to advance to the final of the double-knockout tournament, where they’d get a rematch with St. Catherines.

Leamington scored first in the top of the

first inning to start of the game, while the Cobras countered with a run of their own to tie it up.

In the second, the Lakers added two more runs to take a 3-1 lead, but St. Catherines wasn’t quite

finished as they score three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.

The score remained that way until the top of the sixth when the Lakers’ offence decided enough

results of 39. Jim Pearson and Ken Kreuger shot outstanding 40s.One shot back at 41 was Jamie Arquette.

Other very praiseworthy results of 45 or less were fired by the following players: Pat Hill 43; John Blood, Gerry Van Deven, John Liddell and Larry Chopchik 44s; Randy Nash 45.

Some other golfers who achieved results less than 50 were Rick Thompson, Frank Van Nie, Wiz, Dave

son Henricks on a Brody Ferreira two-out double to centerfield.

That’s all the Lakers would need as reliever Hudson Dyck and his defence shut down the Cobras the rest of the way.

Talbot Trail Senior golfers hit the links

By Bob McLean On September 1, there were 59 golfers who ventured out on the hilly fairways of the Talbot Trail course. Bill Ward played exceptionally well as he earned a one-under 35.

In the SS gold division Gerry Becigneul and Neil Adamson tied with highly

commendable 46s. Close behind was the steady playing Andy Orsini with his 49.

In the SS silver division, Joe Vrtel merited an awesome 46. Tom Hyatt played very well achieving a solid 48. Erle Nash, as always, achieved a very satisfying result!

Here’s another reminder that the “Doc McLean” Senior Invitational, open to men and women 50+, will be played on Saturday, September 19.

11U Lakers cap off season with OBA silver

The 11U Leamington Lakers wrapped up their 2026 season with an impressive silver-medal performance at the OBA “B” Provincial Championships in Pelham, battling through six games over three days.

The Lakers opened the tournament Friday with a 13-6 victory over the host Pelham Panthers before taking on the Woodslee Orioles. Leamington overcame a mid-game deficit and held on for an 8-6 win, finishing the opening day undefeated.

The strong start continued Saturday as the Lakers defeated the Chatham Diamonds 6-2 to improve to 3-0.

Later that day, Leamington faced a very strong Beamsville Stingers team and suffered its first loss of the tournament, 10-1.

With their tournament run continuing Sunday, Leamington faced the Woodstock Wranglers. The Lakers put together 14 hits and built an early advantage before holding off a late Woodstock rally for an 8-6 victory, earning their way into the championship round.

That set up a rematch with Beamsville in the final.

With the tournament following a double-knockout format, Leamington’s earlier loss to the Stingers meant the Lakers would have to defeat Beamsville twice on Sunday to capture the OBA championship.

The Lakers continued to battle against a very strong Beamsville squad, but the Stingers built an early advantage. Leamington kept competing throughout the game but ultimately fell 9-2, bringing its provincial tournament run to an end.

Flyers’ starting goalie Colten Drillen-Roach halted 18 of 19 shots for the win.

Leading the scoring for the Flyers was rookie Chase Pettipiece who netted a hattrick. Pettipiece’s first tally opened the scoring on a breakaway move.

He added a pair in the

second with a flip from close range then slickly tipped in a left lane powerplay attempt.

Griffin Grundner blasted a screen shot, Erik Muxlow snapped one from the slot and Josh Cleary ripped a powerplay marker.

In the third period, Braedon Clark got in on the action with a screened drive, then Jak Thiessen and Josh Cleary pumped

powerplay tallies to complete the scoring.

Toronto’s lone tally came near the eight-minute mark of the first.

Leamington went threefor-four on the powerplay while their penalty kill blanked the Warriors on three attempts.

On Sunday, they played in Buffalo against the always feisty and tough Jr. Sabres. It was a rather difficult battle that had plenty of back-and-forth action but had a rather bizarre conclusion at the buzzer.

A video review of an apparent Flyers’ goal at 17:35 that was signaled as still in play allowed the teams to run out the time.

The Flyers then asked for a review and it was hailed as a good goal, so 2:25 went back up on the clock and the Flyers and Sabres played it out again. The Flyers emerged with a 4-2 victory.

After a scoreless opening period, Buffalo grabbed a 1-0 lead as Cole Miller notched one from the left lane that caught Drillen-Roach off guard 20 seconds into the frame. But at 5:37, Braeden Cooke and Griffen Grundner skated on a two-on-one where Cooke’s left-side shot eluded Buffalo starter Logan Vitez.

With the game tied, the Sabres’ Miller tabbed his second goal at 2:23 of the third on a powerplay, but the Flyers roared right back at 2:37 as Drew Ferenc and Ryan Kociuk set up Bryce Belleau’s left lane blast.

Both teams applied plenty of pressure and had scoring chances.

At 17:35, Chase Pettipiece unleashed an absolute cannon of a shot and raised his arms into the air believing it was a goal.

However, no whistle was blown and play continued until time expired.

That was when Leamington asked for a video review and was awarded the go-ahead marker - the remaining 2:25 seconds would be replayed.

The Sabres pulled Vitez with 1:17 left and Grundner stuffed the puck into an empty net at 19:56 to seal a 4-2 win. Drillen-Roach stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced to up his record to 2-0.

The Flyers home opener will be this Thursday, September 10 when they host the Burlington Cougars at 7:10 pm.

On Friday, September 11, the Windsor Spitfires will make a special appearance at the Highbury Canco arena as they host the Flint Firebirds at 7:00 pm.

Knights bow out in “D” semi-finals

By Paul Forman The ball diamonds in Kingsville hosted an OBA tournament for

a second consecutive weekend, this time seeing eleven contenders go after the 15U D title this

past Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The hometown boys started off on the right note, edging a Corunna crew by a score of 13-12.

The 15U Knights then made their way out of town for a short stint at Oriole Park to face the boys from Woodslee. A slugfest ensued, with the Knights ending up on the short end of a 21-14 contest.

Day two of the tournament saw the Knights facing must-win situations to survive, and they did so with flying colours by defeating Wyoming 4-3 in a pitchers’ duel, and by holding on to beat Alvinston, 11-8, in a late afternoon affair.

Coming into Labour Day with a record of three wins against one loss, Kingsville was pitted against an undefeated team from Mitchell. Battling to the very end, the local boys came up a little short against a foe that eventually went on to win the overall title with a 12-0 victory over the Second baseman Logan Krueger was all smiles as Woodslee Orioles.

14U Lakers hopes dashed in Waterdown contest

By Mark Ribble The host 14U Leamington Lakers went into the Labour Day Weekend with high hopes against a tough roster of opponents, but bowed out Sunday to a hungry foe in the Waterdown Wolves.

Friday’s torrential rains pushed the entire Ontario 14U “B” championship tournament back a day as organizers scrambled to reschedule the games in the double knockout format.

The 12-team event featured some pitching gems and yet, quite a few high scores.

Leamington started the tournament on the right foot with a 7-5 victory over the St. Thomas Cardinals on Saturday morning.

They followed that with a 10-5 loss to Chatham late Saturday and went into Sunday’s games with a win and a loss. That loss would hurt as the Lakers took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning only to see Chatham rally for the victory.

Sunday morning’s contest against Waterdown seemed like it would go the Lakers’ way as they built leads of 3-0 and 6-2 and looked very much in

control. But the Wolves battled back and tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth.

Leamington surged ahead with a five-run bottom half of the sixth, highlighted by Brody Church’s long two-run triple.

Leamington’s downfall came in the top of the seventh when the Wolves battled back once more — this time taking the lead, scoring eight unanswered runs for a 14-11 comeback victory.

Waterdown went on to face the heavily favoured Welland Jackfish in the finals and lost 10-2.
