Makers’ Market donates to Hospice

By Paul Forman Six children, ranging in age from 5-11, wrapped up their unique week-long summer camp by doing some good for the community. Hosted by Crafty Nest Studio in Kingsville, the campers each came up with a theme, and throughout the week, made items to sell relating to their chosen themes.

Dragons, apples, games, miniatures and flowers were amongst the themes devised by the kids, with each camper creating products, determining prices and setting up their own retail space for the two hour afternoon market held this past Friday.

Crafty Nest owner and camp director Lisa McCracken said that the children voted to donate their market proceeds towards the Erie Shores Hospice and had set $500 as the fundraising goal for their endeavour.

OPP enforcing 3-way stop in Leamington The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will continue targeted enforcement and public education at the intersection of Danforth Ave. and Carolina Woods Crescent in Leamington.

The OPP and members of the public have observed a concerning number of motorists failing to comply with traffic laws at this intersection, which is designated as a three-way stop.

These behaviours remain among the leading contributing factors in intersection-related collisions.

“The behaviours we continue to see at intersections are both concerning and preventable. Every failure to stop, every missed observation, and every decision to rush through an intersection carries the potential for devastating consequences,” said Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod, West Region OPP Traffic Safety and Marine.

“These are not just traffic violations – they are choices that can result in serious injury or loss of life. We are asking all drivers to take that extra moment to stop, look and ensure it is safe before proceeding. That moment can save a life.”

Intersections continue to be the highest-risk environments on Ontario roadways.

The OPP reminds motorists that safe and attentive driving is essential at every intersection, every time. Drivers are reminded and urged to: come to a complete stop at stop signs, obey all traffic signals, yield the right-of-way when required, and remain alert and focused at all times.

Road safety is a shared responsibility, and even a brief moment of caution can prevent tragedy.

River Rock Ramblers at Two Creeks

The River Rock Ramblers will bring the Two Creeks dance floor to life when they take the stage Sunday, September 6 at 6 p.m. The Ramblers bring the party, with classic rock and pop from the 1970s to the 2000s that make every show a celebration. Province makes funding announcement for affordable housing

da-Ontario Community Housing Initiative going towards the building of eighteen affordable housing units in Leamington.

With cheque in hand, the announcement was made by Matthew Rae, Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Rob Flack, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and will provide the final financial installment necessary for the completion of a fifty mixed-income unit complex on lands abutting The Bridge Youth Resource Centre to the east.

“Together, the Municipality of Leamington and City of Windsor are taking action to create more affordable housing and support a growing community,” said Rae. “The Ontario government will continue supporting municipalities by providing the tools and critical housing-enabling investments needed to get more housing built across the province.”

The 18 one-bedroom units will offer approximately 560 square feet of living space for youth, adults, seniors, low-income workers and individuals facing addiction challenges, with 12 of the 18 units offering greater accessibility for renters with special requirements.

Krista Rempel, Executive Director of the Bridge Youth Resource Centre, spoke at the announcement and expressed her gratitude for the funding that will cover the final costs of the multi-unit housing project.

“The support we received for our Tiny Homes Community Ini-

tiative helped to turn our vision into reality.

The funding allows us to create more than just homes–we are creating a community where youth and individuals can find stability, security and the opportunity to build a stronger future.”

Rempel expected that the new units would be available for rent later in the year and expressed that pricing for each unit would be set by the City of Windsor.

Many locally elected representatives were in attendance for the funding announcement, including Hilda MacDonald, Mayor of the Municipality of Leamington and

Warden of the County of Essex. Like Rempel, MacDonald was appreciative of how the funds from the upper two levels of government would make an impact on housing in the municipality.

MacDonald said, “These 18 new homes will provide more than a place to live. They will offer stability, dignity, and an opportunity for people to build a stronger future.

We are proud to see this innovative project taking shape here in Leamington and grateful for the investments that are helping address the need for affordable housing across our region.”

Summer music festival hits Kingsville

Helping Our Heroes President Scott Treanor said “with bigger needs we need bigger ideas and events,” the fundraising festival featured Petals of Gold, the John Thomas Blues Band and the Jen Knight Band, while Dice Tacos and the Brit Boys set up their mobile units to feed hungry patrons.

Helping Our Heroes raises funds that go towards pairing service dogs with Canadian veterans that are experiencing symptoms of PTSD/ PTSS. Between acts, the audience was entertained with some rock trivia and educated by Doug Pflug who spoke about personally dealing with post traumatic stress disorder.

Treanor and volunteers from Helping Our Heroes indicated that they hoped to learn from their first festival “kick at the can” and looked forward to bringing the festival back for another run in the summer of 2027.

From nuts to bolts, to traffic complaints It’s another odds and ends week with lots of stuff happening in and around the Sun Parlour.

As I write this column Tuesday morning, I celebrate 41 years in the newspaper business. In fact the “Looking Back” excerpts from the Leamington Post on page 20 are from the very first paper I ever had a hand in producing. I feel old.

Summer traffic is still an issue in the area, with Oak Street East in Leamington now getting the bulk of the traffic. Those poor folks on the second concession have it double because of construction

on the first concession and also on Highway 3 past County Rd. 37.

Deer Run gets the traffic continuing to Wheatley but that stretch of Oak from the light at Erie to the soccer fields was already a nuisance. And once again I’ll speak on the poor timing of the advanced green left turn light at Erie and Oak that — for some reason — randomly disappears on the weekends and/or early mornings.

Speaking of traffic, I’d like to be the firm doing the traffic study in Wheatley for the recently proposed truck ferry that

is supposed to be operational by 2028. Servicing up to 300 trucks a day, I can’t imagine the infrastructure nightmare that goes with it. Wheatley already gets their fair share of trucks through the downtown. I can’t imagine adding 300 more.

Kudos to the Leamington Lakers 8U baseball team for their OBA championship this past weekend. I watched a few games and saw some kids that are eager to learn and play the game right.

An email arrived from Kingsville resident Tom Bailey: “Here is my ’36 Ford Coupe with rumble seat taken on Clark Street in Leamington in the early ’60s after I returned from three years’ service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Gimli, Manitoba.

“I purchased the car from my brotherin-law, the late Andy Varga, for $50. I drove it for several years until my growing family outgrew it.

The car was in excellent shape, never giving me any problems. I sold it to the late Don Cleghorn for $65. It would be interesting to know if it still exists today!”

coaches when our kids were that age. We didn’t win the OBA that year but did win twice over the next three or four years.

There’s no better feeling for a ball player or coach than to become a provincial champion.

My dad and brothers were Ontario champs before I was old enough to put on spikes and I was fortunate enough to win two as a player and two as a coach.

Leamington’s waterfront marketplace is everything they said it would be. Deb and I attended the opening night and were blown away. That will be a gem on the water for years to come.

School is back in session next week and most kids are anxious to get back into the routine. I remember the excitement of the first day of school, despite summer break being over.

When “You Needed Me” reached #1 on November 4, 1978, it became the biggest hit of Anne Murray’s career.

The singer had just returned to show business after a two-year hiatus.

As she recalls, “One day, I just sat down and said look, let’s stop this,” she remarked in a 1981 Billboard interview. “Let’s say no to everything from now on. I need to have some breathing room. And it’s made quite a difference.”

Part of the reason for that hiatus was the birth of her first child, son William Stewart Langstroth, born in August 1976. “I’ve always dreamed of a family,” Murray told Jeff Wilson of United Press International after the birth of her second child, daughter Dawn.

Lightning Bolt promises to be fun for the whole family

By Mark Ribble The 10th annual UMEI Lightning Bolt Run is all set for Saturday, September 26 with a 5k walk/ run, a 10k run and two kids dashes on the slate of activities.

The annual fundraiser for the school raised almost $31,000 last year, according to race director Sydney Friesen.

They have planned a fun morning at the Point Pelee National Park Visitor Centre trails and are expecting upwards of 300 participants this year.

Friesen says that it’s a fun family atmosphere.

“We get really great feedback,” she said.

“The serious runner tells us this is their favourite one.”

A mix of serious runners and casual UMEI supporters is what makes this event unique, according to UMEI Executive Director of Admissions and Advancement Chani Wiens.

Last year’s race attracted 293 participants and raised much needed funds for the school.

“As a private school, we get no government funding,” added Wiens.

“Tuition covers about half of our expenses and fundraisers like this help cover the rest.”

The race was started through the efforts of the late Evelyn Greenwood 10 years ago and Wiens says they are happy to be able to carry it through a decade later.

The 5k walk/run will allow families and individuals to take to the trails at their own pace and the 10k run will allow the runners to be officially timed through W.R.A.C.E. and their times can be used as qualifying times for other races.

But it all gets underway at 9 am with the

kids 400-metre dash, followed by a second kids race — a one-km run for the youngsters, who all get medals at the finish line.

Obituaries Dennis Koestler

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis Koestler on August 21, 2026, at the age of 69, surrounded by his loving family.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen Koestler, his children, Greg (Vanessa) Koestler, Sarah (Mike) Mortley.

Proud grandfather of Cecelia and Iris. Survived by his loving mother Stephanie Koestler Dick. Predeceased by his father Bruno Koestler (1984) and stepfather Henry Dick (2011). He leaves behind brothers, Gary (Lynn), Rob (Sherri) and step-siblings Janet Robinson, Larry Dick (Mary) and Diane Morgan (late Dan). Survived by his brother-in-law John Jackson (Peggy), sister-in-laws Donna Jackson (Greg) and Lynn Jackson. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

A mechanical engineer by profession, he finished his career at Fort Dearborn Company, retiring after many years in the field. A natural problem-solver, he could build or fix just about anything. He generously put those skills to use helping family, friends and neighbours.

Hockey was a lifelong passion. Whether playing, coaching or watching, he loved the game. He also enjoyed working with his hands, spending time outdoors and growing the garlic that became well known around town.

Above all, Dennis cherished his family. He especially treasured his role as a father and grandfather and the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy. His presence will be deeply missed and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Dennis passed away surrounded by those who loved him most. His family is grateful to Erie Shores Hospice, Leamington for the compassionate care provided during his final days.

Visitation was held at Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell St, Leamington (519-326-2631) on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

Funeral mass at St Michael’s Church on Monday, August 31. Interment at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Erie Shores Hospice.

Over the next few weeks, members of the Essex County Detachment of the OPP and by-law officers from the various communities will be out educating the public of the rules and regulations governing e-bikes and e-scooters in the county.

As the use of these vehicles continues to grow across the county, it is important for riders to recognize that e-bikes — also known as power-assisted bicycles — are subject to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and Ontario Regulation 369/09.

Electric-powered motorcycles and dirt bikes are treated the same as their gas-powered counterparts under Ontario law.

To be legally operated, an e-bike must meet the following requirements: • Be equipped with operable pedals • Have an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less • Have a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h • Weigh no more than 120 kg, including the battery • Be equipped with two independent braking systems • Have the battery and motor securely fastened to the frame • Have all electrical terminals properly insulated • Meet all Ontario equipment standards E-bike riders must also: •Be at least 16 years of age •Wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet •Follow the same rules of the road as cyclists •Refrain from riding on controlled-access highways Police are seeing several people, including children under the age of 16 years operating battery-powered scooters (e-scooters) in our communities.

Two-wheeled electric scooters are becoming very popular, especially with the younger segment of our population. E-scooters are reasonably priced, portable, and fun to ride.

The problem is that many people do not know what laws and restrictions apply to them.

To be legally operated, an e-scooters must have: • Two wheels (one on front, one on back) • Platform for standing • Have an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less • Have a maximum assisted speed of 24 km/h • A handlebar for steering • A braking system • Horn or bell • At least one white light on front, one red light on rear and reflective material on sides E-scooters must not have pedals, seats, baskets, any motor modifications.

E-scooter riders must also be at least 16 years of age, wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet if under the age of 18 and always stand while riding E-scooter riders must not carry passengers, cargo or park in areas designated for vehicles or pedestrians, or operate on controlled access highways If you observe unsafe or concerning behaviour on the road, contact your local OPP detachment at 1-888-3101122 or call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

friends, and neighbours. It is a sacred calling.

Indeed, holy work takes place 24 hours a day in the rooms and spaces that residents call home.

I knew this before joining the Board.

However, serving on the Board has allowed me to see these realities more clearly and appreciate them more deeply. We are part of something much bigger than ourselves.

But I have an even greater ‘aha’ moment to share.

I recall a Board meeting several months ago when we were discussing the proposed new development project. We talked about the number of suites, what each suite would include, and various possibilities still being considered. In that moment, I almost blurted out, ‘This is about me!’

Indeed, this is about me and perhaps about many of you reading this.

One of those suites may someday be mine. One may someday be yours.

I am supporting this project, in part, for myself. Selfish perhaps, but honest. We who are still able to live independently in our own homes are allowing others to plan thoughtfully for our future, just as previous generations did through capital projects over the decades. Many of those who helped make those investments possible now call LMH home.

Many of us live in single-family homes. We manage our houses, our yards, and our daily lives. Today, we are doing well. And, by the grace of God, we hope to continue doing so for years to come.

That is precisely why LMH is doing this work.

Ruth and I are pleased to support this project financially.

This project is not solely about us, but it is certainly about many of us whose stage of life may look similar to mine.

Not selfish. Just reality.

Join me in considering where you and I may be someday. Perhaps one day, one of these new suites will have your name on the door.

Sturgeon Woods campers dip a line at kids fishing derby

By Paul Forman An annual end-of-summer event, the Sturgeon Woods Kids Fishing Derby saw 82 youngsters cast a bobber and worm into the bay in hopes of catching a big one on an August 29 morning.

Children vied for a trophy-winning fish in three different age categories, and they did well, by bringing in a variety of species that included sheepshead, perch, silver bass, sunfish and carp.

Tops in the three-to six-years age category was Isaiah Cayer with a catch that measured 12 ⅛ inches, Adiline Kroh took

the honours in the seven-to-eleven age category with a fish that was 21.5inches in length, while Preston Pardy came out on top in the 12-16 age category with his 19 ⅛ inch fish.

Other large fish were caught by Blake Price, Ella Serdachny, Alleister Slaughter, Willow Leitch and Samara Fryer.

The fishing derby concluded with a trophy presentation for the top three in each age category, some pizza, and a prize for each participant all in part from the generosity shown by many local businesses and private supporters.

Dog Show at Colasanti’s this weekend

The Windsor All Breed Training & Tracking Club and Essex County Kennel Club are holding their Labour Day Weekend Dog Show from Thursday, September 3 to Sunday, September 6 at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens.

The events start at 9 a.m. and run until finished each day.

They include eight All-Breed Conformation Dog Shows and two All-Breed Rally Obedience Trials, along with special features categories as well.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a weekend of dogs and fun.

Essex region bike tour

Cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to experience the Essex Region by bike this fall as the Essex Region Bike Tour returns with scenic road routes, peaceful Greenway trails and a lakefront celebration in support of local trail infrastructure.

“We are thrilled that this year’s 60 and 100-kilometre routes will take riders along picturesque county roads through Essex, Amherstburg, Harrow and Kingsville, while Greenway cyclists can enjoy safe, off-road routes on the Chrysler Canada and Cypher Systems Group Greenways,” says Danielle Stuebing, Director of Communications.

The routes were developed with the guidance and expertise of Tom and Sue Omstead of Share the Road to offer an enjoyable, comfortable and safe experience for participants.

This year’s Bike Tour will be held on Saturday, September 26. Riders can choose from five routes suited to a range of skill levels: 60 km or 100 km road routes, or 15 km, 32 km or 60 km Greenway trail experiences. Funds raised will support local trail infrastructure projects.

Bob Knight calls it a career at Leamington GM

By Mark Ribble After 32 years in the auto sales business, Bob Knight made his last deal on Thursday, August 27.

Well over 40 co-workers, customers, friends and family showed up for Bob’s last afternoon at the dealership where it all began in April of 1994.

Even the man who brought him into the business — Jack Gisi — was on hand to congratulate Bob on his stellar career.

When the dust settled, Bob says he’s sold about 6,000 vehicles at that dealership and he was grateful to those in attendance for being there for the cel-

ebration.

“Every one of you folks here are like family,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure to work with all of you over the years.”

Bob was congratulated

by Leamington GM’s General Manager Adnan Abouzeeni on behalf of the Rafih Auto Group.

Abouzeeni said that he had the pleasure of working with Bob for over 10 years and he always greeted everyone with a

smile.

Bob then reminsisced about his early days.

“My very first deal was in 1994 and it was a used

car, sold to the Mastronardis,” he said. “I’ve been lucky to work with a good staff all these years.

Calls for Paramedic Services in the Essex-Windsor region will be triaged and dispatched using a cutting-edge Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) beginning September 16.

The new system is designed to ensure that paramedics are dispatched more efficiently and more quickly to the most urgent, life-threatening emergencies.

MPDS is a software-based system used

by Ambulance Communications Officers to triage 911 calls based on the severity of the medical condition. This system, successfully implemented by the Ministry of Health in several municipalities across the province, is backed by decades of research and evidence and helps Ambulance Communications Offi-

cers make more informed decisions.

“MPDS is designed with one clear purpose: to make sure that people experiencing life‑threatening emergencies receive help as quickly as possible,” said Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Justin Lammers. “It helps ensure that someone who is experiencing an urgent or life-threatening event receives an ambulance ahead of someone dealing with a non-urgent, non-life-threatening injury.”

One feature of MPDS is that Ambulance Communications Officers will ask more questions of 911 callers to help determine the urgency of the situation so that ambulances can be sent where they are needed most, when they are needed most.

Because MPDS pri-

oritizes calls based on urgency, patients with non‑life‑threatening conditions will, at times, wait longer for an ambulance — especially during periods when paramedic resources are stretched.

Ambulance Communications Officers will remain in contact with these patients to monitor their condition and ensure they can safely wait for care.

“This isn’t a flaw in the system,” said Lammers.

“It’s the system working exactly as intended to protect lives and preserve critical paramedic resources for the people who need them most.”

Chatham-Kent Police Service community survey The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) launched its 2026 Community Survey on September 1, running through September 30.

The survey is administered by an independent third-party provider, ensuring complete confidentiality. CKPS does not have access to individual responses or participant identities.

In addition to the online survey, some residents may receive a telephone call from the sur-

vey provider requesting their participation. These calls are legitimate, and recipients are encouraged to take part. Whether completed online or by phone, community feedback plays a vital role in shaping priorities, guiding service improvements and helping CKPS to better understand the needs and expectations of residents.

The results of the 2025 Community Survey were published on the CKPS website, along with a

summary of the actions and improvements implemented in response to what we heard from the community.

The survey also provides an opportunity to recognize and commend CKPS members whose dedication, professionalism and commitment have made a positive difference in the lives of others.

Looking back ...

From the Leamington Post September 4, 1985 There was no fanfare when the Canadian Coast Guard recently installed the western approach lights for the new Leamington Marina. A hole was cut in the end of the dock and concrete poured into the boulders in the dock cribbing, and the 20-foot light fastened to the concrete. The east side light sits at the end of the marina breakwall. Youngsters (as usual) managed to get some names and dates etched into the concrete while it was wet.

—— Leamington Fastball Midgets ran roughshod over Charing Cross 12-2 in Great Lakes Fastball action. The local squad was led to victory by the fine pitching of Ken Tiessen, who demonstrated again why he is considered one of the premier pitchers in the Great Lakes League as he walked but one and struck out five and scattered six hits to take the victory. He retired the last nine batters in order.

—— Leamington’s H.J. Heinz company is well into its $8 million expansion program announced last fall. Structural steel for added warehousing is seen near the southeast corner of Erie and Talbot Streets. A shipping entry off Erie Street has been closed and truck traffic to the plant goes through the new entrances on Oak Street East. The steel work is worth about $3 million.

—— Installation of a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Victoria and Ivan Street is being examined by the town engineering and police departments.

The four-way was requested in a petition by residents in the area. Stop signs are in effect on Ivan Street only. All of the traffic northbound on Victoria past Ivan is for the Canadian Canners plant.

—— It was a banner year for the student employment office at Canada Manpower. This summer the office found placements for 1,670 students, an increase of 96 percent over 1984. The student manpower program has been operating for over 10 years and is geared solely to provide employment for secondary and post-secondary students. It serves the Leamington, Kingsville and Wheatley area.

From the Kingsville Reporter September 4, 1985 Sailing vessels from all along the Lake Erie shoreline and the banks of the Detroit River met at Cedar Island Yacht Club for the annual Labour Day Regatta.

Boats sailed down Saturday and racing took place on Sunday. Bob Burke took first in his class as well as best time for the race. Dennis Hendel took first in his class and came first overall in division.

Other winners in various classes were Dave Edgerton, Brenda Woodruff, Francis Kennette, Peter Dewar, K. Richardson and Wayne Hallatt.

—— The new Big V and Woodslee Credit Union Mall is nearing completion on Main Street East. Big V plans to move in by the end of September and the credit union by mid-October.

—— A Kingsville girl, Susan Techko, was voted the popular choice for the 1985 Tomato Festival Queen by the public.

The contest was held at Masters Studio for the 2nd annual People’s Choice Award. Susan took a commanding lead, and Bill Masters presented her with a trophy.

—— Several area bands gathered at Swaddling’s Happy Acres to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy research. More than 10 acts performed at this year’s jam, for almost 12 hours all together. From the Wheatley Journal September 4, 1985 A large turnout of veterans and guests were at the Branch 324 Legion surprise party for retiring steward/manager Leonard Lamb. The gathering was held at the Legion and Mr. Lamb was the recipient of a number of gifts and well wishes.

—— As has been the custom for centuries, the first animals to be unloaded when a travelling circus comes to town is the elephants. This was the case in Wheatley on Friday morning bright and early, and a handful of youngsters were on hand to watch the setup of the Kelly-Miller Bros Circus and all the hustle and bustle that accompanies it.

—— For the first time in Monday night golf hstory, there was a hole-in-one during league play. Bob McLean performed this feat on #9 with a smooth seven iron. The ball apparently landed about three feet short of the hole and rolled into the centre of the cup for a very rare ace, especially since it was from the blue tees. It is difficult to even keep a ball on #9 green, so obviously Bob made an excellent shot.

—— After winning the Sun Parlour “C” division against Harrow on August 8, the Legion Pee Wees were given a bye to the OBA championship tournament hosted by Corunna. Over the Labour Day weekend, the team commuted to Corunna for an exciting and rewarding two days. In a double knock-out series, Wheatley ended up playing Tillsonburg, Strathroy and Corunna. Wheatley won the OBA championship with four straight wins. Coaches Alf Whaley, Smokey Brown and Ted Stockton pondered, paced, grimaced, objected, were rejected, and finally grinned as they reaped the harvest of many nights of hard work. A brief ceremony followed, during which the team was awarded the championship medals and trophy. Alf has “racked up” another one!

8U Lakers take Ontario B title at home

By Mark Ribble The 8U Leamington Lakers took a 5-1 record into the final game of the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) 8U ‘B’ championships on Sunday and emerged as the provincial champs.

The host team kicked off the 15-team double knockout tournament with a decisive 10-0 shutout of Lakeshore in game one on Thursday, August 27 and followed that with a 17-3 victory over Stratford Friday.

Later Friday, they beat the St. Thomas Cardinals 13-5 to carry a perfect 3-0 record into Saturday.

On Saturday morning the locals ran into an offensive juggernaut in the Woodtock Wranglers, who beat them 23-18, but bounced back with an 18-6 defeat of neighbours Kingsville Knights later in the day to sit at 4-1 going into Sunday.

That Leamington win knocked Kingsville out of the tournament. The Knights finished with a 3-2 record after wins over Georgina, Waterdown and Stratford and an additional loss to Chatham.

With three teams remaining in the tournament, Leamington watched intently as the undefeated Woodstock team built an 11-6 lead over St. Thomas early in the semi-final, only to falter in later innings and lose 15-13 to the Cardinals.

That set up a showdown between Leamington and Woodstock to determine who would advance to the final against St. Thomas.

The Lakers didn’t disappoint as they broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh on a Nash O’Neil two-run double. O’Neil then scampered home on a Gannon Grubb single to make the score 9-6, then the Lakers’ defense went to work in the bottom half of the inning to send Woodstock packing.

In the final game — despite a mid-game downpour — the Lakers stayed ahead of the Cardinals from the first inning on and wrapped it up with a barrage of runs in the sixth to polish off a 15-5 win and the first Ontario title for the 8U squad. A large crowd of spectators erupted in applause when the final out was made.

9U LAKERS TAKE SILVER AT OBA IN CHATHAM

The 9U Leamington Lakers made it all the way to the OBA championship this past weekend but had to settle for a silver medal. Being the provincial runner-up in the ‘B’ division of the 9U age group is no small feat and something for the team to be proud of. The Lakers drew the bye in the first round of the tournament in Chatham and played their first game Saturday morning, beating Georgina 23-8. They then beat St. Thomas 14-6 and edged Kincardine 9-8 in the third game of the day.

The Lakers went into Sunday undefeated and beat Stratford 13-5 to punch their ticket to the final. Awaiting them was the St. Thomas Cardinals who promptly beat the Lakers 6-3 to force an extra game, held Monday evening. The Lakers lost that one 12-4. On August 25, there were 57 members of the Talbot Trail senior men’s golf league who participated in the third scramble of 2026.

The CP winner was Bill Ward whose awesome shot on #7 ended up only seven feet from the pin. Jerry Paine hit a scintillating CP shot on #9 to within 28 inches of the #9 pin. Ray Foster drained a dazzling 26-foot LP winning putt on #2. BW, Jerry and Ray each received a sleeve of golf balls, and all players received $10 TT gift cards.

T3G2 players (Carl Robinson, Tom Dunn, Dave Clark and Paul Cairioli) scored an outstanding 5 under 31.

These players each received $12 gift cards. Two teams tied with 3-under 33s, but by a draw T4G1 earned the victory. Each player (John Liddell, Chopper, Dan Tymec and Paul George) received $10 gift cards. John Almasi, Conrad Babkirk, OV and Wiz obtained $8 gift cards.

T5G1 shot a solid two under 34 result. The most travelled team T1G1 achieved a 3-over 39.

Ray Foster continued his outstanding selling of the 50-25-25 tickets which certainly helps the league. Two players each won $77.50. Other draw winners won- $25, $20, $15, $10 TT gift cards.

Forty of the league players travelled to Tilbury GC on August 26 for their second excursion, arranged by Lloyd Symons. We will return to Willow Ridge September 14.

On Saturday, September 19, the Doc McLean Senior Invitational will be held at TTGC. This year, two couples will be honoured: the Reynaerts –Vic and Pat, and the Daudlins – Pete and Carolyn. It is a player friendly tournament.

Kingsville hosts 9U ‘C’ OBA tournament

By Paul Forman Seven teams contended for a provincial title in the 9U division on the ball diamonds in Kingsville this past weekend.

The host Knights opened the Ontario Baseball Association tournament with a convincing win over the Tillsonburg Otters by a score of 16-8.

Wes Genereaux led Kingsville’s 23-hit parade with four knocks, while Quinton Morency and Marshall Botelho each contributed three runs batted in for the hometown crew.

Game two of the tourney saw the Knights matched up against a tough crew from Mitchell.

The visitors opened up with a big seven-run first inning and the gang from Kingsville could not find their way back, losing by a final score of 13-4.

Day two of the tournament had the local squadmatched up against a stellar fielding team from

Dorchester.

Much like their second game, the Knights fell quickly behind in the first inning.

Junior golfers wrap up season

The nine-hole runners-up were Oliver Ingratta, left and Cedar Ferguson.

The Junior Golf Program at Talbot Trail Golf Course finished off their 2026 season with a wind-up day, crowning champions in several categories.

A roster of 120 young golfers took part in the program, which ran over eight weeks in July and August.

Memorial Award went to Cedar Ferguson and Brett Jadischke.

The Sherra Howe Memorial Award went to Karter Bell and Keira Anthony.
