By Deanna Bertrand It was fun for all ages on September 12 at Thiessen Orchards as they celebrate 50 years of Pick Your Own Apples and serving Leamington and surrounding area.

Saturday’s celebration included a gift of an apple fritter to the first 500 guests through the gates and loads of adventure for families and visitors.

Apple picking season is officially underway now through October 31, open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm. The orchard grows eight varieties of apples on the farm located at 400 Talbot Road East.

“Celebrating 50 years with so many familiar faces and families was incredibly special,” said Krissy Thiessen. “It was also very meaningful to have three generations of the Thiessen family here together to celebrate this milestone. We’re so thankful for everyone who has made Thiessen Orchards part of their fall traditions over the years. This weekend was a wonderful reminder of how much this place means to our family and our community.”

Thiessen Orchards has grown over the years from humble beginnings in 1976 to a traditional favourite place for many families to enjoy a day on the farm. Thousands of visitors return every year and make it an annual outing for their family, from picking your own apples, to taking part in many of the farm activities such as the corn maze, wagon rides, Little Diggers, Sally the Super Slide, Busy Bee’s race and more.

Leamington candidates answer questions at Half Century Centre event

By Mark Ribble A full house greeted the 2026 Leamington municipal election candidates as the Leamington Half Century Centre hosted a candidates day on Wednesday, September 9.

All 14 of the council candidates attended and took the stage first with questions taken from the crowd of about 150 citizens aimed specifically at a candidate with an additional two candidates

allowed to chime in with a one-minute limit.

Each candidate was also given one minute to introduce themselves and talk about what they can do to help the Municipality of Leamington thrive.

Most of the focus was on council’s decision the night before to cut garbage pickup back to bi-weekly, with a smattering of questions on Air Bnb restrictions, homelessness, housing and

uptown beautification versus waterfront spending.

The mayor and deputy mayor candidates took the stage immediately after the councillors and received similar questions

from the audience, with the emphasis seemingly more aimed at financials and spending.

Most of the candidates stuck around afterward to greet prospective voters who attended.

“We always want our community to come together,” said Jessica Ireland, President of the Cottam Rotarians. “This is such a great event for us to organize, puts Cottam on the map, and lets everybody know about all the fantastic things happening here.”

The fairgrounds were like a candy store for kids with all of the inflatables, pony rides, petting zoo and pancake breakfast, while a parade through the downtown area was featured in the early afternoon.

Always striving to be bigger and better, the local Rotarians brought in a few new fair offerings.

“We were excited to bring in some bunny racing this year,” said President Ireland. “We have a new dunk tank this year that assists some outside organizations and some new food vendors on site.”

Ireland was grateful to the Town of Kingsville, local Scouts, the Knights of Columbus and her fellow Rotarians, as well as many volunteers from local high schools.

“The success of the fall fair could not take place without the help of many hands,” she said.

MWCP celebrates 20 years with Festival of Guest Nations

By Mark Ribble Seacliff Park was alive with music, food and dance on Sunday, September 13 as the Migrant Worker Community Program (MWCP) celebrated 20 years of service with a Festival of Guest Nations.

The smells and sounds

wafted through the park and beyond as the MWCP had several food tents, community service tents and information booths set up at the foot of the hill.

Singers, dancers and musicians took to the amphitheatre stage to entertain the hundreds of

workers, visitors and residents who came to take it all in.

Among the dignitaries welcoming everyone there were newly named Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Trevor Jones,

Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald and Leamington’s Mexico Consul Rodrigo Baez.

MWCP chair Martin Varela introduced those guests and several others as they celebrated with an official opening ceremony on the stage.

Among those honoured was the late Lorraine Gibson, who had a big hand in the early years of the MWCP. Lorraine’s caring personality and her ability to get things done were trademarks that endeared her to the MWCP. Her sister, Carol Bell, was on hand to receive her posthumous honour.

their residents, as well as to the workers themselves for their hard work and sacrifice over the years. He then brought MWCP board members that were present up to the stage to present them with certificates honouring their dedication to the program.

Emmys bring back memories of favourite shows Watching the Emmy Awards on Monday night, I couldn’t help but realize how many of these award-winning shows I haven’t seen. In fact, many of them I had not even heard of.

With streaming channels getting the bulk of the recognition in Hollywood these days, those old classic networks must struggle to survive in today’s world.

Shows like Widow’s Bay, Hacks and Margo’s Got Money Troubles may not be household names outside of the streaming community, but they are

very successful.

We’ve enjoyed several streaming-based shows, including the aforementioned Hacks, as well as Ted Lasso, From and many others.

It makes you wonder what the traditional networks have to offer but fear not, they are still thriving.

It makes me think about Emmy-winning shows from when I was younger and so I looked them up, randomly seeking out 1969 as my year.

Outstanding Comedy Series was won by NBC’s Get Smart, with fellow

nominees Bewitched, Family Affair, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and Julia not making the grade.

For dramas, the big winner was a show I’ve never heard of — NET Playhouse — a PBS show that highlighted different episodes of plays and stories. Nominees in this category included The FBI, Ironside, Judd For The Defense, Mission Impossible and The Name Of The Game.

And of course, the ever-popular musical and variety series had their moment in the limelight, with Rowan and Martin’s

If I look into the 1970s when TV really took off in the sitcom department, I see winners like MASH, All In The Family and the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

On the drama side, don’t forget The Waltons, Kojak and The Streets of San Francisco, where Michael

Douglas first hit it big.

As the 1970s advanced into the 1980s, several new shows came along that made me sit up and Mark Ribble take notice.

BTO hit song started as a lark

“You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” was a song intended for an audience of one. Songwriter Randy Bachman never wanted the public to hear the song he had composed especially for his brother Gary, the first manager of Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

As Randy explains, his brother Gary had a speech impediment. “We thought just for fun… we’d take this song and I’d stutter and we’d send it to him.

He’ll have the only copy in the world of this song by BTO.” The tune began as an instrumental track inspired by the rhythm guitar of Dave Mason (“Only You Know, And I Know”). BTO already had a hit in 1974 – “Let It Ride” (number 12 in August).

They were in Seattle, Washington, recording their third album and had eight songs prepared.

“But we had this ninth song,” says Randy. “It was basically just an instrumental and I was fooling around… I wrote the lyrics, out of the blue and stuttered through them.”

When the album was completed, Charles Fach of Memory Records flew to Seattle to hear the finished product. After listening to the eight songs BTO recorded for the album, Fach complained that he didn’t that magic thing. “What magic?”

Randy parried. “It’s magic when it gets airplay and people buy it. You can’t play magic.”

Fach asked if the band had anything else. Randy replied, “We have this one song, but it’s a joke.

Wheatley Legion Grand Opening brings full house

Cadets, first responders, and local residents filled the new build to celebrate on Saturday, September 12 with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

With a soft opening in June of this year, the Legion’s executive put together a more formal agenda this past Saturday, which included an appearance by the Colour Guard, speeches from

various Executive members, introductions of the new branch Executive, a blessing of the branch by Pastor John Cats, cheque presentations, and the unveiling of a special replica service medal.

Speaking at the grand opening, Branch 324 President Tom Brown said, “Today is about coming home. Today we celebrate much more than just a

building. We lost a building, but we never lost our commitment towards our veterans.”

The Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary and the Wheatley Lions Club made generous donations at the celebration that will add to the building fund for the 6,000 square foot, single floor, fully accessible structure located at 17 Talbot Street West.

Brown also shared that the new building has created some buzz in the community, with the Wheatley Legion seeing an uptick of 400 new members this year alone.

With the formal part of the day wrapped up, many in attendance then stayed for the ever-popular meat draws and danced to the tunes of South River Slim.

Obituaries John Gerald Konecnik

John Gerald Konecnik, 80, of Leamington, died peacefully after a horrible battle with Alzheimer’s, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Chatham Hospice. He was born on January 13, 1946 in Ruthven, Ontario.

Uncle John spent his career as an auto mechanic, working in Leamington and later in Blytheswood. His deep knowledge of automobiles and dedication to his craft earned him respect in the communities he served.

Beyond his professional life, he was a faithfully devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he maintained an active presence for many years.

When he wasn’t “sooo busy” as he always stated, his most treasured friends Ken Cosford, Glenn Sellick, Don Sayers and Willy Schauer could find him at the local coffee shop where their many views on life were shared.

A passionate enthusiast of automobiles, Uncle John attended car shows throughout his life, a hobby that reflected his lifelong appreciation for fine mechanics and automotive design.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews Keith and Pat Whittle, Michael and Chris Cincurak, Garry and Helen Symons, Mark (2022) and Wendy Cincurak, Duane and Kathy Faubert. Cherished great-uncle to 11, great-greatuncle to 19, and great-great-great-uncle to seven. Special neighbour to George and Holly Adams, who always watched out for Uncle John and shared many memorable events. He was George’s neighbour for 58 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Pauline, and his sister Anne (Cincurak) McQueen.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at both the Chatham-Kent Hospice and Meadows of Wheatley for their compassionate care and support they provided to Uncle John, especially Loraine, Darlene, Madeline and Jenn.

Visitation will be held at Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington, Ontario, on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery.

Donations to Meadows of Wheatley, Alzheimer’s Society or Chatham-Kent Hospice would be greatly appreciated.

Obituaries Virgil Recker Virgil Recker, age 70, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2026 after a short and brave battle with cancer.

He will be missed by Pat, his devoted wife of 42 years, his loving sons Matt (Wendy) and Nick.

He was a proud Papa to his beautiful grandchildren Arthur and Letitia. He also leaves his dear brother Bill (Carolyn) and his sister Paula Pockele ( Jerry). He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virgil was a lifelong farmer and owner of Recker Seeds Inc. for many years until his retirement in 2020.

As his wishes, he is cremated and will be laid to rest at St. Francis Cemetery in Tilbury. A private celebration of life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Hospice – Erie Shores Campus, where he got wonderful care from the very compassionate staff.

Chamber celebrates 90 years with 32nd Business Excellence Awards The 32nd Leamington District Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards not only celebrated the excellent businesses in the region, it also celebrated the 90th anniversary of the chamber itself.

Over 300 local business leaders, co-workers and volunteers attended the September 9 event at the Roma Club.

Local performer Rick Stephenson welcomed attendees with some great renditions of Sinatra music and then handed the microphone over to the evening’s emcees, Jay and Tori from Mix 96.7, who brought sponsors and recipients to the stage for each award.

Chamber Manager Wendy Parsons welcomed everyone and talked about the chamber’s work in helping businesses in the region, and was followed

by Chamber President Randy Sleiman who ushered in the emcees and got the ceremony started.

First up was the Libro Director’s Choice Award, presented by Lori Atkinson of Libro. That award went to Erie Shores Hospice and was accepted by Hospice Executive Director Katharen Bortolin.

By Paul Forman Always the last award handed out at the annual Leamington District Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards reception, the Alf Bennie Award celebrates a local citizen that has had a significant impact on our community through their various volunteer work, and has made a positive difference in making our community a better place through their deeds and contributions.

“This is an award that recognizes the kind of contribution that can’t be measured by one event, by one organization, or by one accomplishment. It’s about years of giving your time, energy, and talents that don’t always come with much attention and recognition,” said the Alf Bennie Award presenter, Cordell Green of Blackburn Media.

guru and volunteer by night, Mark Ribble was clearly surprised as he was announced as this year’s Alf Bennie Award recipient, all the while covering the awards event for the Southpoint Sun this past Wednesday evening at the Roma Club in Leamington.

Green continued, “Tonight’s honouree has spent years telling the story of this community, but just as importantly, hoping to preserve it. He doesn’t just write about what others are doing. He shows up and he’s a part of it.”

Born and raised in Point Pelee National Park, later moving to town, Ribble graduated from Leamington District Secondary School with a dream of going to college and becoming a hockey playby-play announcer.

news business, first as an apprentice pressman, later as a sales representative and reporter, and currently has the title of editor of the Southpoint Sun weekly newspaper.

Ribble shared that his involvement with the newspaper has allowed him to overcome his tendency to be shy and connect with his community by covering a wide variety of local events and by getting others to reminisce about their past glory days by means of his wildly popular nostalgic column “Rib’s Ramblings”.

Love of sports set the stage for the first of many times that Ribble has volunteered for the local community over the past 40 years.

Reflecting on his first time volunteering, he said, “Way back, Randy Lamotte and I (as teenagers) took a team of little guys to coach and we really enjoyed it.”

From his first time coaching baseball, he then took over the helm of overseeing many other ball and hockey teams, along with volunteering to sit on local minor hockey and baseball boards, including the board that formed the Junior C Wheatley Sharks.

Mark’s affinity for trivia and ball led him to volunteering to host a trivia night to raise funds for Leamington Minor Baseball, which he’s done for over 20 years.

Wanting to honour his Uncle Bob and other Canadian war veterans, Ribble and his nephew Jerry approached the town seven years ago about a hometown heroes banner project that continues to this day, seeing over 100 vets remembered by name, era, branch, rank and photo, for a period that begins just after Thanksgiving up until Remembrance Day. That banner campaign led to Mark and Jerry being acknowledged with a special award at last year’s 2025 Mayor’s Recognition Awards in Leamington.

Noticing the success of the commemorative banners, Wheatley Legion President Tom Brown sought out Ribble in 2021 asking him if he had any interest in leading a Remembrance Day ceremony in Leamington.

Teaming up with Jerry for another venture, Ribble and a newly formed committee took on the challenge and will see

Mark once again pick up the microphone to lead the Remembrance Day program for another year at the site at Princess and Mill Street East.

“Being involved with the Remembrance Day ceremonies and seeing the banners in town has been a big reward for me,” he said. “Knowing that we made a difference for families that were seeking recognition for their loved ones.”

Always wanting to do community theatre, and with encouragement from his wife Debbie, Ribble has now been hit by the acting/directing bug. He spent many hours this past spring at The Bank Theatre in his directing debut of the play Farce of Nature, and will spend many more with his directorial return for the upcoming sequel Farce of Habit coming to the downtown venue this fall.

Ribble was asked about his sentiments on winning the 2026 Alf Bennie Award and said, “It makes me feel good. I’m really more humbled by it than anything, because I feel over the years I’ve been at many

business excellence award events and have watched some of the winners and all the things they’ve done for the community. Some part of me feels not worthy of it, but another part feels that I should be proud and that I was recognized for my efforts.”

As far as thank yous, he acknowledged an understanding family and

accommodating coworkers over the years.

“My wife Debbie has been fantastic with all of the stuff that I have been involved with and the patience that she has shown. A big thank you to the person nominating me and the Chamber for recognizing me this way.”

Classic play opens at The Bank Theatre Friday

By Mark Ribble An Arthur Miller classic, Death of a Salesman, opens Friday, September 18 at The Bank Theatre in Leamington.

Directed by award-winning actor/director Dean Valentino, the play features some great local talent and a story that will make you take stock of your life and prioritize the things that matter most.

The play, which takes place in the late 1940s, follows the life of the Loman family. Willy Loman has been a life-long travelling salesman who is cracking under the weight of financial ruin. He’s dissatisfied being gone so much and asks his boss for a desk job. When he is fired, Willy spirals into a world of memories from his past, with hopes that he can revisit them.

Valentino plays Willy with the same amount of empathy, frustration and anger that theatre fans have seen before. As Willy fights with memories of days gone by, he refuses to accept that his sons are

just ordinary people and not the huge success he dreamed they’d be.

Kristen Dias returns to The Bank Theatre stage with a strong performance as his wife Linda, a woman who has to fight to get a word in edge-wise in the Loman household.

Willy and Linda’s oldest son Biff is played with gusto by Sam Brimner and their youngest son Happy is played delightfully oblivious by Ryan Hallick.

Willy’s imagination takes him back to some very real moments throughout their lives and conjures up his longdead brother Ben, played by veteran actor Mitch Snadon.

He also encounters his friend and neighbour Charley (Corey Robertson) on several occasions, whose success in life seems to bother Willy.

In the end, Willy’s demise in an intentional car crash brings the family together one last time, the same day their mortgage is paid off, proving

that Willy was indeed, successful at something but did not fully appreciate what he had.

Several local actors round out the cast, including Noah Simpson as Charley’s son Bernard, Gwyneth Covey as Letta, Austin Beaulieu as Stanley, Zach Howell as Howard and Holly Pettypiece as Ms. Forsythe.

The play opens Friday, September 18 with a 7:30 show, followed by a Saturday 7:30 pm performance and a Sunday 2 pm matinee. It runs with the same schedule the following weekend, with the Sunday matinee on September 27 being the finale.

Death of a Salesman is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC and Dramatists Play Service.

Green bins on their way; Leamington going to bi-weekly garbage pickup

By Mark Ribble With the new Green Bin Program from Circular Materials about to roll out next month, Leamington council has followed suit with some neighbouring municipalities and voted to go to bi-weekly garbage pickup starting in January, 2027.

A waste collection tender was put out in May of this year with the current waste collection contract with GFL about to expire on December 31. Only two eligible bids were made — one by GFL and one by Miller Waste Systems out of London. The Miller bid was the lowest.

Leamington’s Manager of Environmental Services, Shannon Belleau, came before council with a two-pronged recommendation — for council to approve entering into a contract with Miller Waste Systems and for council to consider moving to a bi-weekly garbage pickup.

The proposed contract between the municipality and Miller would run from January 1, 2027 to the end of 2032 — a sixyear period.

According to Belleau’s report, the Ontario Food and Organic Policy Statement released in 2018 mandates that municipalities must look toward alternative methods to dispose of organic and food waste so that it reduces the impact on landfills.

The 2018 statement required municipalities to achieve a target of 50 per cent waste reduction by 2025. To achieve that, the Green Bin Program, mandated by the province, began to roll out last year in this region.

Phase 1 began last October in Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Windsor with the City of Windsor promptly moving to bi-weekly garbage collection this year.

Tecumseh will follow suit in 2027.

Phase 2 rolls out in November of this year and will include Leamington, Kingsville and Amherstburg. The green bins, coupled with the new blue bin recycling introduced earlier this year, should theoretically reduce the amount of actual garbage going to the landfill.

material for this region will actually be processed locally — at Seacliff Energy on Mersea Road 1.

According to the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA), garbage going to the landfill had remained consistent up until the implementation of the Green Bin program last year. Now it is substantially reduced, which will eventually add years onto the life of the landfill.

In order to meet provincial targets, residents should only be putting non-recyclable waste into the regular garbage stream.

Those items include non-recyclable plastics, chemical-soiled cleaning materials, personal protection equipment, diapers, hygiene products, broken glass and ceramics.

Food waste should go into the new green bins and all paper, glass, plastic and metal containers should go into the new blue bins.

Residents have issues with the sheer size of the bins and say that they are too cumbersome to take to the roadside

for those with mobility issues. That’s a common complaint, coupled with receiving a damaged Green Bin. Any issues can be brought to the attention of the EWSWA by calling 1-800-563-3377.

Administration prepared the new contract tender as a weekly collection and a bi-weekly collection program and further divided those into four-day and two-day collections.

The cost of weekly pickups would be 39 per cent higher than what the municipality pays in 2026.

Bi-weekly reduces that increase to seven per cent.

According to Belleau, that difference computes to a savings of about $1,629,7870 over the course of the six-year contract.

The recommendation for a bi-weekly pickup of garbage, coupled with a bi-weekly pickup of recycling and a weekly pickup of Green Bin food and organic waste has less impact on the 2027 budget and on the landfill.

Residents will see a $157 Green Bin charge on their tax bills — a cost that

officials say is necessary to keep the program running.

Councillor Anthony Abraham asked about a pilot project run in Windsor this year where residents with infants could sign up for a special additional diaper pickup on the off-week.

It’s a program that has its benefits for those who require it and would cost the municipality in the neighbourhood of an additional $25,000 if they should choose a similar pilot project.

Councillor Paul Tiessen asked if county council decides to go to a regional garbage pickup, could Leamington get out of this contract, and the answer was unclear whether that was feasible or not.

Councillor Tim Wilkinson was all for the bi-weekly pickup based on the success of the Green Bin program.

“When this first came out, I didn’t know what to think,” he said. But it’s been great to see the results coming out. It’s about reducing the impact on the landfill.”

Donald and Councillor Heather Latam both made it clear when they spoke that the public needed to know that the Green Bin program was mandated by the province and that Leamington has to figure out a way to comply and still reduce the landfill impact.

“Change is always difficult,” said the Mayor.

“This is about the future and us all doing better.

It’s really a learning experience for all and for the greater good.”

Mayor MacDonald said that the city of Guelph has been doing this for about 30 years and she felt our region had fallen behind in the waste reduction issue.

“I do think it’s time,” added Latam. “We are understanding this isn’t for today, but for the future. And it’s been mandated to us. I want to make it clear that this is not something the seven of us just thought up.”

Council then voted to award the tender to Miller Waste Systems and agreed to go to a bi-weekly garbage pickup.

CHATHAM-KENT WATER AND WASTEWATER MASTER PLAN UPDATE STUDY The Public Utilities Commission for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK PUC) is undertaking a Water and Wastewater Master Plan (WWWMP) Update Study following Approach #1.

There were many changes as well, not only for the volunteers and staff but for the fans too as they got a good look at the many new players on the Flyers’ roster.

During much of the game, both teams jockeyed for puck possession and positioning for quality shots. However, both teams’ defenses were tasked with effectively thwarting and limiting

scoring chances.

Starting goalie Carter Vicente (Cougars) and Colten Drillen-Roach (Flyers) both turned aside some good shots. Vicente finished the night with 1:14 left and halted 35 of 37 Flyers’ shots, while Drillen-Roach stopped 20 of 21 that came his way.

Perhaps one of the stranger new items is a stoppage of play somewhere around the middle of each period for a “TV timeout.” The one-minute breather enabled both squads to catch their breaths and discuss their

offensive attacks and defensive systems.

The Flyers dominated in the opening period but could only get one puck past Vicente. Leamington scored at 17:26 when vets Evan Hjelholt and Jak Thiessen hooked passes to create a left to right play that found Griffin Grundner who whisked the puck into the net.

Two early second frame penalties appeared to drain the Flyers a bit. Both were goaltender interference calls, and on the second one Burlington’s Sean Short unleashed a

pass that bounded past Drillen-Roach for his lone blemish of the game.

The third period was more entertaining in which both sides matched each other in scoring chances. Despite killing two early penalty calls successfully, the drama between the Cougars and Flyers only increased as the clock ticked away.

At 16:24, Jack Jovifovski slipped a pass from behind the Cougars’ net to Chase Pettipiece, who was anchored in the slot and drilled the puck past Vicente for his fifth goal of the season.

Burlington lifted Vicente for an extra attacker with 1:14 left and the Flyers’ defense did not allow them any serious cracks at tying the contest.

The Flyers will have the weekend off and will not play again until Thursday, September 17 when they host the Mississauga Chargers at 7:10 pm.

Sharks win home opener, drop road game

By Greg Coulter The Wheatley Omstead Sharks opened their season at home on September 9.

With a trio of Sharks player alumnus at the helm, head coach Kyle Quick, associate coaches Tony Youseff and Riley Babkirk had their charges well prepared against perennial powerhouse Essex 73’s.

game star Ethan Davis, a mix of veterans and energized rookies, the Sharks ground out a 3-1 home ice victory over the Essex 73’s.

Veterans Josh Chauvin and Colton Selwood staked the Sharks to a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Recently acquired sniper from Amherstburg, Rory Sandison’s perfect centre ice open net flip shot secured the nail-biting

finish.

Despite a 34-17 shot disadvantage (many from the outer perimeter) netminder Ethan Davis took advantage of a great defensive support network of his teammates.

Coach Quick was extremely proud of the players. “It was a great team effort to open the season and that’s what we needed to beat such a strong team like Essex,” he said. “The opening

night crowd was awesome and the guys fed off the energy helping us get the win.”

The Sharks return home on September16th, hosting Dresden, then visit Walpole on the 19th, Essex on the 22nd,

and return home to face Blenheim on the 23rd.

The split in two games with an intensity of playoff type hockey, the coaches will no doubt be encouraged by the effort of the players as they work through their early season jitters.

Sharks seasons tickets offer great entertainment value, while supporting local players, coaches and a host of volunteers support staff.

Erie Shores Men enjoy another week on the links

Talbot Trail Seniors

By Bob McLean On Thursday, September 3, the Talbot Trail golf course endured the rage of Mother Nature. A tornado ripped through Wheatley knocking down many trees and causing other significant damage. The golf course was closed, and a call went out to the various leagues to assist in the cleanup.

Derek and his workers appreciated the terrific response and help they received. As a result, the course was returned to good playing condition by Monday.

Ken Krueger led the 51 players in the senior men’s golf league on September 8 as he continued his outstanding play, shooting a 36. Dutchy and Pearcie scored excellent 38s. Tom Dunn, after his knee surgery, has quickly got very good golfing results and fired a 39. Bob Redel was on fire, shooting a very praiseworthy 42. On Saturday, September 19, the Doc McLean Senior Invitational will be played. You can sign up online or at the Talbot Trail clubhouse. It is a player friendly tournament. The Erie Shores senior men’s league had a great day of golf with 58 members in attendance on August 24.

The draw winners were Hrynewich and Crosier. Closest to the pin on #3 was B. Manery and on #16 Gord Anderson. Longest putt on #5 was Luxford and on #18 Tremblay. Low round for the day was by Bill Manery 76, and four golfers tied at 80: Sabelli, Steingart, Cobby and Mills.

The winning team was comprised of F. Klassen, Manery, Slater and Sabelli. In second place were Dick, Quinn and Gherasim. Third

place went to Shaften, Shalcraft, Luxford and Dalimonte.
