ing gowns and canning fruit, and soon expanded to organizing teas and other gatherings, holding raffles and hosting dinner dances, all in the name of raising funds for their beloved hospital.

They were there for every milestone along the way and now that organization has wrapped up their efforts after 75 years.

Erie Shores HealthCare recently unveiled a new tribute wall recognizing the Erie Shores HealthCare Auxiliary, celebrating those 75 years of volunteer service and giving to support patients, staff and hospital programs.

The unveiling was part of the hospital’s 75th anniversary celebrations on

Wednesday, December 17, and comes as the Auxiliary wraps up its organization after 75 years of supporting local health care.

To mark its final contribution, the Auxiliary presented Erie Shores HealthCare with a donation of $122,110, supporting priorities that strengthen patient care close to home.

“This tribute wall is a permanent thank you to the people who showed up for this hospital, year after year,” said Kristin Kennedy, president and CEO of Erie Shores HealthCare.

“For 75 years, the Auxiliary’s volunteers and donors have helped make care better for patients and families.

We’re honoured to recog-

nize that legacy in a lasting way as we celebrate 75 years of care in our community.”

The tribute wall is a collection of 75 photos, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia, along with a tribute to all of the past presidents from the first (Edith Atkin) to the last (Kerstin Kay).

Erie Shores HealthCare also released the official trailer for an upcoming documentary that will reflect on the hospital’s 75-year history of providing care to the community. The documentary will share stories from across the decades, highlighting the people, milestones and moments that helped shape health care in the

“The Auxiliary has always been driven by one goal, helping the hospital support the community,” said Kerstin Kay, Past President, Erie Shores HealthCare Auxiliary.

“We’re proud of what volunteers have accomplished over 75 years, and we’re grateful to everyone who supported our efforts. This tribute wall is a meaningful way to ensure that spirit of giving is remembered.”

CIBC celebrates milestone 75 years in Leamington

By Mark Ribble Clients, retirees and employees of CIBC Leamington joined local dignitaries at the branch on Thursday, December 18 to celebrate CIBC’s 75th year in Leamington.

Community General Manager Joslene Dib welcomed everyone to the branch as retirees arrived to hugs, handshakes and stories of days gone by.

Some retirees present were with the bank when it was still in its Talbot Street East location.

Jones, who talked about growing up in Leamington and the connections made with bank employees.

Dib talked about how she joined CIBC 25 years ago at a different branch, but her mother talked her into coming home to Leamington when the opportunity arose. She’s now been at the Leamington branch for 20 years.

“Best decision I ever made,” she said.

Chatham-Kent MP Dave Epp also spoke about how CIBC always made those connections and gave back to the community it served.

da MacDonald agreed, saying she was moved by the way CIBC conducted business in Leamington for such a long time.

Former branch manager Joe Oswald spoke about his family’s history with CIBC and told some tales about his father, the late Bob Oswald, who was manager here for eight years in the mid-seventies and early eighties.

“My dad adored you,” Oswald said emotionally as he turned to a group of retirees present at the gathering. “I thank you all for your dedication and service.”

He also joked that his dad referred to the branch on Erie Street South as “the house that Bobby built”, which brought a chuckle and familiar nod from those who knew the senior Mr. Oswald and his “Bob-isms”.

Among those retirees was long-time Leamington CIBC employee Delia Pacheco, who retired last year after a 47-year career here. She spoke about how things have changed

over the years.

“We used to have to write everything down,” she said. “Now, technology makes it so much

faster. We’ve come a long way!”

As part of the occasion, CIBC also presented a cheque for $3,000 to the

Leamington Community Hope Centre to help with ongoing efforts to help the homeless in the region.

Hospital day-one employee has lots of fond memories

She returned and worked another five years before moving to Windsor and taking a job at Met Hospital in 1955.

Then in 1962, it was time to raise a family of her own and she took about 20 years off before returning to work in the medical field at a Windsor long term care facility.

Now 92 years old, Arnelda (now Arnelda Evans) still lives at home in the same house she and her late husband Chris raised that family in. One of her sons lives with her.

She grew up in a family of 14 kids, with about 21 years separating the oldest from the youngest.

Only seven of the 14 siblings remain.

Her time spent in Leamington is a treasured memory.

On Saturday, December 20, she and her daughter Brenda visited the Leamington Arts Centre to check out the hospital’s 75th anniversary exhibit there. She brought along a scrapbook and a list of all the people she recalled working with — from doctors to nurses to people in administration.

Arnelda was quick to point out her memories of some of the photos on the wall. In particular, she pointed to the opening night photo of the hospital sitting on a hill, all lit up in every window.

“I remember it looking just like that,” she said.

“Only I was here during the day that day, so all those lights didn’t stand out as much.”

She says that soon after starting at the hospital, she was laid off.

“In that first year, they realized that they had more staff than patients,” she said. “So they laid a bunch of us off. I

Her job duties included helping with the patients and even feeding the babies in the maternity ward on the night shift.

Wheatley Library will now feature an Early Literacy Station through the support of UE Enclosures.

Early Literacy Stations are child-friendly dedicated computers with child-sized keyboards and mice, that provide safe, interactive and educational digital learning.

Each station comes loaded with French and English educational games that foster foundational literacy and math skills such as letter and number recognition, phonics, rhyming and storytelling. These bilingual stations are popular with kids as they allow screen time fun, and popular with parents because they offer educational entertainment.

The Early Literacy Station is set up on an accessible table, so that all patrons can easily access the computer at a height suitable to them. It is available on a first come, first-served basis to enjoy during library hours in Wheatley.

Leamington construction updates

Construction continues on the Seacliff Drive West Reconstruction and Roundabout Construction Project.

Paving work was expected to take place last week, weather permitting. Once paving and line painting are complete, the road will reopen to traffic. At that time, all road-closure signage will be removed to indicate that the roadway is open for use.

Construction will resume in spring 2026, at which point Seacliff Drive West will close again to allow crews to complete the remaining phases of the project. Additional details regarding the resumption of work will be issued in the spring.

Infrastructure improvements are nearing completion for the Queens Avenue, John Street, Albert Street, Baird Avenue and Elliott Street Sewer Separation Project.

Improvements and paving have been completed on all streets. Crews are currently completing restoration and finishing work on Elliott Street.

Elliott Street was expected to be fully open to all traffic by December 19, weather permitting. At that time, all road closure signage will be removed to indicate the roadway is open.

Pet of the Week

Well hello there, young whippersnapper. Name’s Charlie, and I’ve been around the block a few times - literally and figuratively.

I’m a wise ol’ yellow lab with a heart full of stories, a back touched by the years, and a spirit that still perks up at the sound of a friendly knock on the door. Life’s been a bit unsettled lately, so I can be anxious at first. But speak kindly, offer a gentle hand, and you’ll find I’m CHARLIE quick to soften. I walk just fine with a little enthusiastic pulling here and there, and I know my sit and down.

As for treats, I’ll only accept Benny’s Bullys. At my age, I’ve earned the right to be particular. When folks come to say hello, I’ll give one dignified bark, then shuffle over with a wiggle to greet them properly. Dogs get me awfully excited so I’ll need patient, understanding canine friends. I came to the shelter through no fault of my own, and now I’m hoping for a quiet home with a yard where an old boy like me can stretch, sniff the breeze, and enjoy the simple things again. If you’re seeking a loyal companion with a gentle spirit and a wise old heart, I’d be honoured to spend my sunset years by your side.

New mobile program from Humane Society

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society (WECHS), in partnership with the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation (CHC), is launching Helping Paws: Pet Health Access for Vulnerable Households, a pilot mobile veterinary program designed to bring essential pet care directly to individuals and families facing housing insecurity and financial hardship across Windsor-Essex.

Led by WECHS’s new Community Veterinarian, Dr. Emily Durbin, Helping Paws removes barriers to essential veterinary and spay/neuter services for underserved communities.

Motivated by the 2024–25 parvovirus outbreak in Windsor, the program tackles critical gaps in accessible pet wellness care and supports the many individuals who depend on their pets for emotional support, stability, and safety.

“The parvo outbreak showed how urgently accessible veterinary services are needed in our community,” said Dr. Durbin. “Helping Paws provides preventative care where it’s needed most, reduces disease spread, and helps keep pets with the people who love them.”

Many residents of CHC and frontline shelters face complex barriers such as domestic violence, poverty, and unstable housing. Some delay leaving unsafe environments out of fear of being separated from their pets or being unable to care for them afterward. Helping Paws seeks to keep families — human and animal — together by offering subsidized, accessible, and judgment-free care.

Through Helping Paws, WECHS will provide on-site veterinary support clinics in underserved communities, minimizing transportation barriers; offer education on responsible pet ownership and basic animal health; and connect clients to ongoing resources such as pet food banks and emergency boarding.

Helping Paws is jointly funded by the OSPCA Cares Fund, the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation and The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society. WECHS and its partners are seeking sustainable long-term funding to continue and expand the program beyond 2025.

Dart league scores a 180 for local food bank

By Paul Forman Wednesday night darts at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 188 isn’t just about fun and socializing as the 94-member league made their annual Christmas donation to the Kingsville Community Food Bank.

Along with hundreds of non-perishables that were collected, the league presented a cheque

of $1,290 to representatives of the food bank on the evening of December 17.

Branch President James Raposo thanked all of the league members for their generosity at the cheque presentation and also said, “This is what the Legion is about. We are here to help out our local community.”

Make sure you eat those Christmas veggies

The big day is finally here!

The big guy is really near!

Okay, enough of the poetry, I’ve already done that.

Boy, did 2025 fly by or what?

It seems like just yesterday we were joking about 300 days until Christmas and all that stuff.

Now, with the Christmas baking (hopefully) done, we turn our attention to the turkey and the

ham — or for those vegetarians out there — the block of tofu with a sprig of holly and spoonful of cranberry sauce.

Now, I’m not against vegetables. I like certain vegetables and have disdain for others.

I can really count on just one hand how many vegetables I dislike.

Let’s start with parsnips and eggplant — two very different items but both on my “naughty” list.

My mom used to pre-

pare these in such a way that I could not get a taste for them. But I can’t blame it all on her. These two veggies are a challenge to many people.

As for beets, I love them, but many, including my wife, think they taste like dirt. And while I admit they are a little earthy, that never hurt anyone.

Her and I disagree on a few vegetables like green beans and radishes. She loves green beans but does not like radishes.

A blast from the past Bill Myers, in Pickering, was born in Toronto on November 20, 1937, the same day as the Santa Claus parade.

Bill recently celebrated his 88th birthday and after we phoned to sing “Happy Birthday!” we talked about the 1935 Ford coach he bought from the Toronto Motor Car Co. in September of 1955 when he was 17.

The odometer read 79,002 miles, but the car was in good condition and gave Bill decent gas mileage from its V8 engine.

friends to a hockey practice, Bill had to use his thumb to wipe Bill Sherk the frost off the the same spoke wheels windshield.

About 25 years ago, as on Bill’s car and the Bill and I visited Fawcett same pair of horns on Motors in Whitby, where display on either side of I snapped this photo of the grille. This restored Bill next to a 1935 Ford example took Bill back coupe for sale. It had to when he was 17.

I am the opposite. Give me a good radish with a little heat and a little salt and I’m good to go. You can keep the green beans with the eggplants and parsnips.

Turnips (rutabagas) are also one of those things that I can take or leave. I’ll eat them raw without a protest, but please don’t put them in front of me cooked.

I used to despise squash and sweet potatoes when I was a kid, but I’ve come over to the orange side in recent years and love them both.

My squash usually has to be acorn, pepper or butternut, but a roasted squash is really good with some butter and salt and pepper.

So, when the sweet potato casserole comes out on Christmas Day, I’ll be there with spoon in hand waiting to devour that mashed up mixture (hold the marshmal-

lows).

But I’ll skip the green bean casserole entirely.

The Wheatley Legion Branch 324 Ladies Auxiliary got a front row view of Wheatley Area Public School’s annual Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 17. Canniff joins call for provincial action on homelessness, mental health and addictions The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is joining with mayors across Ontario in calling on the provincial government to urgently increase funding and supports to address the growing homelessness, mental health, and addictions crisis impacting communities of all sizes.

Mayor Darrin Canniff has signed on to the Ontario’s Big City Mayors’ (OBCM) renewed Solve the Crisis campaign, which highlights the pressures municipalities face as frontline responders to a worsening humanitarian and community safety emergency.

At the recent OBCM meeting, member mayors passed a motion urgently calling on the Government of Ontario to declare a state of emergency related to homelessness driven by the mental health and addictions crisis. This declaration would

acknowledge the severity of the situation and enable a more coordinated, properly resourced response across the province.

OBCM and its member municipalities, including Chatham-Kent, are calling on the province to: expand mental health and addictions funding; increase the number of HART Hubs in communities facing growing needs; establish a provincial winter response plan; and develop a long-term strategy to address homelessness and support municipalities delivering front-line services.

“Municipalities are doing everything we can, but we are past the point where local resources can’t keep pace with the need,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “Here in Chatham-Kent, we see the impacts of homelessness, mental health, and addictions every day. Our staff, community

partners, local businesses, and first responders are stretched thin. We need the province to step up with long-term, sustainable funding and a coordinated plan so we can provide the supports our most vulnerable residents deserve.”

Last year, OBCM launched Solve the Crisis to spotlight the increasing number of Ontarians struggling with homelessness, mental health challenges, and addictions. Municipalities, service providers, and thousands of residents joined the call for stronger provincial action. In response, the province introduced the HART Hub program, which consolidated supports under one ministry and created community-based hubs designed to ease pressure on emergency rooms and first responders.

While these initiatives have been posi-

tive steps, funding remains significantly below what municipal leaders say is required. According to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), ending chronic homelessness in the province will require an investment of $11 billion over 10 years, focused on prevention, supportive housing, and sustainable exits from homelessness.

The Ontario’s Big City Mayors organization represents 29 municipalities with populations over 100,000, advocating for policy solutions that support nearly 70% of Ontario’s residents. Chatham-Kent participates as part of broader municipal coalition recognizing that homelessness, mental health, and addictions are not challenges limited to large urban centres, they affect communities of every size.

Kingsville’s new Anchor Youth Centre serving area teens

By Lynn McLaughlin The community of Kingsville is helping shape a new home for its teens, right down to the name on the front door.

After gathering input from local youth, families and supporters, Youth Unlimited YFC’s new youth centre will be called “The Anchor,” a name chosen to reflect stability, safety and a sense of belonging.

The Anchor is located in the East Kingsville Square at 313 Main Street, Unit 14.

The site is currently under renovation, with hopes of opening in the new year, and community members are encouraged to watch the organization’s website and Facebook page for updates about the official opening date.

When it opens, The Anchor plans on hosting multiple programs, including drop-in times, food, arts and sports opportunities for local youth.

Youth Unlimited YFC is a Christian faith-based organization that welcomes all youth regardless of background or belief.

With a presence in more than 100 countries and a history spanning over 80 years, Youth Unlimited YFC is now growing its impact locally through programs designed to give teens a safe, free, and

welcoming space after school.

The Southern Ontario (SWO) chapter has 27 locations, including its new satellite in Kingsville, led

by Tim Dyck, the only local employee, who grew up in Kingsville and understands firsthand the needs and character of the community.

“Local youth in Kingsville have limited free, safe, and engaging options for after-school activities, especially those that help them feel connected and supported,” Tim explains. “Many teens need something to do that is positive, welcoming and does not cost money, which is why all programs will be free, or very low cost to attend.”

The goal is to create a place where students can build relationships, have fun, and feel seen and valued, and have a greater sense of hope and purpose.

Right now, Tim is helping out with an after-school program at Erie Migration District School every Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. Any student who attends EMDS from Grades 9 to 12 is welcome.

In addition, twice a month on Fridays, a food program is offered out of the high school library in partnership with Kingsville Lutheran Church, where enough food is prepared to feed approximately 180 people. They have served over 800 meals to date.

Youth Unlimited YFC is committed to welcoming all youth, regardless of belief or background, and creating a non-judgmental environment.

Youth are referred to trained professionals when needed and they hope to have a counsellor available in the future.

Everyone else involved locally serves as a volunteer and must go through an application process.

The organization operates with insurance and charitable status, with administrative support coming from its head office in Woodstock.

Thus far, Youth Unlimited YFC in Kingsville does not receive government funding and is fully supported through community donations and partnerships.

The organization recently held its first annual fundraising banquet at Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre, which Tim describes as a huge success, helping to fuel the next phase of programming.

Financial support can be offered as one-time gifts or ongoing monthly contributions, with tax receipts provided.

Local shoreline association questions Bill 68

Leamington Shoreline Association’s Wayne King is asking for the public’s support in helping to defeat Bill 68, which was recently introduced, proposing to consolidate the province’s current 38 conservation authorities into just seven regional entities.

“While the stated goals of streamlining processes and improving efficiency may sound reasonable, this sweeping consolidation raises significant alarms for our unique region of Essex County,” says King. “Although we are not always on the same page with our local conservation authority, they are not merely an administrative body.

They are guardians of our most precious natural assets and a key partner in protecting our shorelines, wetlands and water sheds for our community’s safety and well-being.”

King lists several critical issues with the proposed bill.

1. Loss of Local Voice and Expertise: Essex County’s ecological landscape — from the coastal wetlands of Lake Erie to the Carolinian forest remnants and agricultural watersheds — is unique. ERCA possesses irreplaceable, local based knowledge. Consolidating decision-making into a much larger, distant regional board risks diluting the community’s specific needs, priorities, and voice in matters of land, water, and habitat protection.

2. Threats to Watershed-Based Management: Conservation authorities are founded on the scientifically sound principle of managing natural resources by watershed, not by arbitrary political boundaries. Bill 68 appears to shift focus toward a more centralized, development-friendly model, potentially undermining the integrated approach that protects our waterways, wetlands and manages flood risks.

3. Erosion of Environmental Protections: There is a genuine fear that this consolidation is a precursor to reducing the role of conservation authorities

in development planning and permitting. Weakening their ability to comment on and regulate development in sensitive areas like floodplains and wetlands could have dire consequences for public safety, property damage, and irreversible ecological loss.

4. Jeopardizing Flood Risk Management: In an era of increasingly severe weather events, the local conservation authority provides essential flood forecasting, warning systems and infrastructure management. Centralizing this function for a vastly larger geographic area could slow response times for the need to protect our homes, farms, and businesses.

5. Diminished Programs and Public Access: From school field trips to Conservation Areas and habitat restoration projects, ERCA delivers handson education and recreation facilities that connects us to our environment.

Consolidation puts these valued programs at risk of being reduced or lost in favour of broader, less personal regional priorities.

“We must ask: Will a large, consolidated board understand the urgency and need to protect the health and well being of the natural resources of this area,” asks King “Will it be as accountable to the residents of Essex County?”

King is calling on community leaders and residents to voice their concerns to their MPP, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Premier of Ontario.

“Our natural heritage is not a luxury,” he says. “It is the foundation of our health, economy and quality of life. Now is the time to stand together to protect it for future generations.”

The Southwest Outdoors Club issued a similar plea on behalf of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority on December 8, but noted a deadline of December 22 to contact your MPP.

Protecting communities from gas wells The provincial government is investing an additional $4 million to protect communities from the risks of old and inactive oil and gas wells. Nine municipalities across southwestern Ontario will receive provincial funding to enhance emergency preparedness and response, as part of the government’s $23.6 million Legacy Oil and Gas Wells Action Plan.

Nine southwest municipalities are receiving funding, including the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Essex County, Norfolk County, Lambton County, Oxford County, Elgin County, Haldimand County, the County of Brant and the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Since 2023, Ontario has provided close to $10 million to help municipalities purchase specialized equipment, deliver critical training programs, collaborate across municipal borders and enhance emergency response capacity to keep communities safe from oil and gas related emergencies. Funds have been used to purchase emergency response equipment, provide health and safety training to municipal staff and improve public education and awareness.

Ontario’s petroleum industry began

in 1858 when North America’s first commercial oil well was dug at Oil Springs.

The province has records for approximately 27,000 oil and gas wells, primarily on private land in southwestern Ontario.

The Abandoned Works Program provides financial assistance to eligible landowners to support the plugging of oil and gas wells that are a high risk to public safety or the environment. To date, the province has invested $36.4 million to plug 454 wells across Ontario.

Ontario recently passed the Resource Management and Safety Act, 2025 which includes amendments to the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act that will strengthen the government’s ability to protect public safety and the environment by addressing hazardous oil and gas wells in cases of operator non-compliance.

Last month, Gore Hill Public School welcomed Student Trustee Cole Foster for an engaging presentation with their Grade 7 and 8 students. Cole shared valuable information about high school life, including courses, sports, leadership opportunities and ways to get involved. As part of the Student Trustee mandate, the visit focused on promoting student voice, advocacy and leadership, while inspiring students to think about their future roles in school communities. Cole also encouraged input on issues that matter most to students and explained how Student Trustees represent these concerns at the board level.

MCB READ-A-THON DONATIONS TO GORE HILL

Eric and Tenley Dutot, along with their father, Troy, of Troy Dutot Mortgages, came together in an incredible show of generosity to support Gore Hill Public School’s Holiday Drive.

Their contribution included cases of soup, pastas and sauces, Kraft Dinner, other canned goods, hats, mittens, toiletry items, and so much more – filling over three carts with essentials for families in need. In total, just under $1,000 worth of items were donated to help not only the school community but also families across Leamington. CEREAL DONATIONS HELP GATORS

Last month, the Gore Hill Public School Community received a special donation from GECDSB Trustee Kim McKinley. Trustee McKinley works closely with schools across the GECDSB to help secure cereal donations for local school communities. Gore Hill received nine large leaf bags filled with cereal to support their Student Nutrition Program. The contribution will help ensure students are nourished throughout their day and ready to learn.

Mt Carmel-Blytheswood Public School held a fundraising read-a-thon in late November.

Students collected donations and then spent a day participating in a variety of reading stations, including a Writer’s Cafe, Read a Recipe, Karaoke and the Nature Nook. The day also included guest readers such as a local OPP officer. The students raised over $7,000 to go towards their school for items like books, sportswear and the healthy snack program.

ERCA approves 2026 draft budget priorities The Essex Region Conservation Authority Board of Directors has approved its draft 2026 Budget for circulation to member municipalities.

“Total municipal funding for 2026 remains consistent with the 2025 level, thanks to the previous year’s surplus,” said Tim Byrne, ERCA CAO. Some highlighted projects for the year ahead include updating flood hazard mapping, GIS updates to the Limit of Regulated Area and continuing to promote a planning-first approach to watershed protection.

Restoration and climate resiliency works to Hillman Marsh will continue, as will management planning for the new Collavino Conservation Area and CASO Greenway.

More than 50,000 trees will be planted and 70 acres of habitat restored.

ERCA will also continue to sample watercourses throughout the region to measure watershed health, while collecting data for the Kingsville-Leamington nutrient research study and delivering a comprehensive agricultural incentive program for

best management farming practices.

In addition, it will deploy a cloud-based backup and disaster recovery solution to enhance data integrity, ensure business continuity, and mitigate risks associated with ransomware attacks, malware infiltration, and inadvertent data loss.

The 2026 draft budget totals $13.9 million and will be funded with approximately $3.5 million from current year cost apportionment. Approximately $6 million is Federal funding and $347,000 will come from Provincial funding sources.

Three million of the budget represents self-generated funds, about $375,000 is from previous years’ revenues, and $759,000 will be transferred from reserves. Of the municipal cost apportionment, $3 million is required to fulfill the Authority’s mandatory obligations.

While year over year budget pressures for mandatory programs and services total $455,803, offsetting items result in a net increase in mandatory cost apportionment of just $83,143. This increase

“The benefit of the locally-based decision making model upon which Conservation Authorities were founded allows ERCA to be nimble in decision-making, focusing on local watershed priorities while being able to respond to emerging municipal priorities,” said Molly Allaire, ERCA Chair.

In October 2025, the Province introduced significant amendments to the Conservation Authorities Act through Bill 68 – Plan to Protect Ontario Act (Budget Measures), 2025 (No. 2). These changes established the Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency (OPCA), a new provincial oversight body tasked with providing centralized governance, setting performance standards, and managing the transition to a regional watershed-based framework and the proposed consolidation of 36 Conservation Authorities into seven regional Authorities.

“While these changes

identified by the province represent a major shift in oversight and governance, this budget was prepared prior to the release of Bill 68,” said Byrne. “However, the province has provided no information about the potential impacts these legislative changes may have, and as such, no estimates to operations, governance, or service delivery have been included in this draft budget.”

Between 2018 and 2025, the local investment of levy and municipal special project funding attracted investment of $1.47 for every $1 of municipal investment for all non-mandatory programs, special term and capital projects.

Between 2018 and 2025, ERCA received municipal funds of $12,841,732, representing levy and special-project funds for programs and projects that are categorized as non-mandatory under the Act. During that time, additional non-municipal funds of $18,858,568 were received, supporting those very same initiatives.

“As an integrated watershed management agency, ERCA’s service delivery

areas have developed over decades, and include beneficial programs and services that support our collective goals related to ecological, social, and economic health,” added Byrne. “While the Province has identified the core services it deems mandatory, ERCA has secured agreements with each of its nine member municipalities to ensure the suite of Category 3 non-mandatory services it offers to achieve a future of environmental sustainability will continue to be delivered.”

Some examples of these non-mandatory services include tree planting and restoration on non-conservation authority owned lands, education and outreach programs, museum operations at the John R. Park Homestead and water quality monitoring and reporting.

The total cost apportionment toward creating a future of environmental sustainability will decrease by 34 cents per household, to $20.89, based on a home assessed at $300,000. Over the past ten years, Current Value Assessment in the region grew 26.8% while

the household cost apportionment for the Conservation Authority has declined by 8% during this time.

Since 2018, the Essex Region Conservation Foundation has provided almost $3.7 million in funding towards mandatory and non-mandatory programs and capital projects, with substantial investment directed to the Fox Creek Conservation Centre at the John R. Park Homestead, various greenway community entrances, restoration projects including Peche Island reefs, and recently, to the Homestead’s museum and barn repairs.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is a public sector organization established by the Province of Ontario and governed by local municipalities. Since 1973, it has provided the organization and delivery of local programs and services that further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources in watersheds in the Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island region.

Early signs of respiratory illness that older adults shouldn’t ignore During respiratory virus season, it’s especially important for older adults and their caregivers to stay alert to the health risks posed by circulating viruses. By recognizing early signs of illness and taking timely action, you can potentially prevent serious complications.

Some symptoms may seem mild at first, but deserve attention, especially for those over 60 or with chronic health conditions: runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, mild fever, fatigue or tiredness, persistent cough, shortness of breath, and/or chest discomfort or wheezing.

While anyone can experience the symptoms listed above, older adults often face additional risks if an illness worsens. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common contagious virus affecting the lungs and breathing passages, and it can begin with cold-like symptoms. But, in

people over 60 or those with chronic health conditions, it can quickly progress into something more serious.

Some seniors may downplay or normalize symptoms, chalking up a cough to dry air or fatigue to a poor night’s sleep. But it’s important not to ignore even minor-seeming symptoms. RSV can present light symptoms for some, then can lead to severe outcomes, including pneumonia and hospitalization.

Adults with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and heart failure are more likely to be hospitalized with RSV than adults without these conditions. As the virus progresses, watch for increasing difficulty breathing, chest tightness or weakness as signs of progression.

Senior fraud: #1 crime against older Canadians As technology becomes more deeply woven into daily life, the threat of scams, frauds and cyber schemes grows and older adults are disproportionately targeted.

Senior fraud is now considered the number one crime against older Canadians. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, in 2024 there were 108,878 fraud reports, with more than $638 million in losses nationally.

These types of crime tend to be under-reported, and the statistic likely doesn’t capture the full scope of the issue.

The numbers don’t just reflect cold statistics, but also trust betrayed, savings lost and dignity damaged.

Many older Canadians

live alone, especially after losing a spouse, friends or family nearby. Scammers know this trend and tend to take advantage of it. When someone lacks frequent social contact, they’re more likely to respond to unsolicited calls, messages or requests for friendship.

A romance scam, for instance, might begin innocently enough. Compliments and companionship are the initial focus. But over time, the scammer begins asking for financial help. By then, emotional investment is high, and emotions can cloud reason.

Frauds where the scammer claims to be from a reputable organization like, for example the Canada Revenue Agency, also prey on people who may

feel hesitant to verify independently. When faced with an allegedly official agency applying pressure, a potential victim may not have the immediate support required to help research the validity of the claim.

What can seniors do?

The following are some practical defenses: • Slow down, verify, don’t act on impulse.

• Scammers pressure people to “act now.” If you get a call, hang up, take time and verify independently.

• Never use the number the caller gives you.

• Guard your personal information fiercely • Don’t give SIN, banking, passwords, personal health numbers or two-factor authentication codes

or make underlying health problems worse. The mortality rate for adults over 50 hospitalized with RSV is about one in nine —higher than for influenza. Re-admission is also more common due to complications or flare-ups of chronic conditions like COPD and heart disease.

Caregivers are often the first to notice when something isn’t quite right. Watch for subtle changes like confusion, reduced appetite or difficulty with daily tasks.

These could all be early indicators of a more serious illness taking hold.

Early action can make a difference. Staying alert, informed and proactive can help older Canadians, and those who care for them, navigate the virus season safely.

Food security: what does it really mean?

We hear about food security, but what does this really mean?

Food security is a term meaning all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to enough safe, nutritious food for an active and healthy life.

Food security is determined by four main areas.

One is the availability or supply of food. Second is access or the ability to obtain food. Third is the utilization or how the body uses nutrients from the food. The fourth is stability, or the consistency of our food supply.

One important area is

affordability of our food.

Many people in today’s uncertain economy do not have the means to purchase enough nutritious food to feed themselves and/or their family.

Food banks began operating in Ontario during the early 1980s, initially as a temporary response to the economic recession at that time. Unfortunately, they are now a mainstay in every city and town across the country. There is an ever-increasing number of people who need to access these food banks.

How do we, as a country, and as a people here in Canada, ensure our food

supply is safe, reliable, available and affordable for all people?

The answer is not easy, but I do know Canadians have access to one of the safest food systems anywhere in the world.

Our agriculture sector continues to produce more food each year, including food from crops and livestock. Agricultural researchers continue to develop higher quality crop seeds, and more efficient ways to grow crops and raise livestock.

This provides us with the food we take for granted when we shop at local grocery and food stores.

The agriculture sector in Essex County and Chatham-Kent continues to

innovate each year. Since I retired a few years ago, the growth and expansion in agricultural innovation has increased dramatically, and the next 5-10 years will be amazing!

Farmers continue to diversify the crops they grow. Corn, soybeans and wheat still account for the major acreages in Southwestern Ontario, but we now grow over 80 different crops in Chatham-Kent and Essex County!

The reasons for crop diversification can include proper crop rotation for improved soil health, risk management, insect and disease management, and market flexibility, along with a number of other

This brought the introduction of greenhouse crops. Commercial vegetable greenhouse production in Ontario began in the 1940s, when a Leamington area grower was inspired by greenhouses in Holland to grow vegetables under cover.

This marked a shift from traditional open-air field growing to a more controlled environment, which allowed growers to mitigate the impact of weather and extend their growing season.

Greenhouse expansion has grown rapidly since the late 1990s, with revenues from greenhouse vegetables increasing at a much faster pace than field vegetables. Key technological advancements, such as hydroponics and computerized climate control, resulted in higher yields and year-round production.

Presently, Essex County grows over 4,500 acres of vegetable greenhouses, which accounts for 80% of Ontario’s total vegetable greenhouse acreage. This also makes Essex County the Greenhouse Capital of Canada and the second-largest greenhouse vegetable cluster in the world.

Chatham-Kent’s greenhouse acreage is over 500 acres, accounting for 10% of Ontario’s total vegetable greenhouse acreage.

The traditional greenhouse crops grown are cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, but is it possible to grow other vegetables we normally would have to import during the winter season?

From the Leamington Post December 24, 1985 The Town of Leamington has collected a sewage charge from 130 property owners over an 11-year period — a charge which the town now says the property owners never owed. An estimate of the total collected is over $60,000. And the only good word from the municipality is that the landowners won’t be paying the fee in the new year. Town clerk Bill Marck acknowledged that the town has no rebate plan, saying the fee was paid voluntarily. The fee was first applied in 1974 when Leamington introduced the sewage charge. A water pipe break on Talbot Street East earlier this year brought it all to the forefront.

—— The installation of a sound system for $16,500 is only one of a number of projects planned in updating Leamington Arena. Recreation Director Rick Atkin has acknowledged he has heard complaints about how old the arena looks and one of his priorities is to come up with funding for improvements. But he was quick to point out that the arena still serves the community and will for many years to come. According to arena manager Rob Johnston, Leamington’s arena is the largest in the province west of Kitchener when it comes to usable square footage.

—— Cottages and permanent homes along Leamington’s shoreline took a battering from the water which turned to ice recently as winter came with a fury to the Sun Parlour.

—— The auxiliary of the Leamington District Memorial Hospital recently donated a recliner chair to the hospital’s ECG room in memory of Charles Hall, late husband of Doreen Hall, a past president of the auxiliary. Present for the donation were Mrs. Hall, auxiliary president Jo Evans and Dr. Emil Jarecsni.

—— The Leamington Peewee 2 Roma Club Rams and Windsor played to an exciting 2-2 draw in Windsor on December 14. Jeff Moody and Shawn Grubb scored for the Rams.

—— The Leamington Rhine Danube Raiders defeated Windsor 6-4 last week in Essex County Hockey League Bantam Major play at Forest Glade Arena. Windsor led 2-0 after the first period, but Leamington pulled even at 3-3 by the end of the second and outscored their rivals 3-1 in the third.

Rob Cribbie paced the Raiders with two goals. Singles went to Steve Zuiedema, Chris Colasanti, Wade Crosby and Aaron Gabriele. Referee John Duddy assessed 33 penalties — 20 of them against Windsor.

—— The St. Louis boys volleyball team has won the Essex County Separate School Board’s A Division championship as well as the Erie Shores title and the Queen of Peace Invitational. Team members include Joe Saad, Mauro Carlini, Steve Mastromatteo, Gilbert Bernardes, Albert Murracas, Frank Monaco, Louie Jraiche, Paul Pereira, Pierre Jraiche, Tom Sleiman, Derick Mastromatteo and Carlos Moniz.

From the Kingsville Reporter December 26, 1974 A happy Christmas can change in a few moments, warns Fire Chief Wilfred Wigle,

in homes where fire safety precautions are neglected. The Fire Chief urges the public to exercise special care in setting up and decorating the Christmas tree. If plans call for a natural tree, it should be bought fresh and green, and kept outdoors or in an unheated garage before brought into the home. Then cut one or two inches diagonally from the butt and set it up in water, which should be maintained above the level of the cut. Check strings of electric lights carefully, looking for broken or worn insulation or loose bulb sockets. Declare your tree a no smoking area.

—— This Friday, December 27, play begins in the sixth annual Cavalier Invitational basketball tournament. The tourney kicks off at 1:30 pm with the Belle River Nobles entertaining Tecumseh. At 3:15, Leamington plays the Lambton-Kent Cardinals, which should be a good battle between two of the highest rated teams in the tournament.

—— Increases in the Old Age Security Pension, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Canada Pension Plan, effective January 1, have been announced by Health and Welfare Canada. The new monthly total for Old Age and Guaranteed Income Supplement for a single person will be $204.27. Married couples will receive a combined payment of $389.70.

The Basic Old Age Pension will rise in January to $120.06. Meanwhile, CPP will increase to a maximum of $241.06.

From The Wheatley Journal December 21, 1922 Deer have become so numerous in Rondeau Park that they have become a nuisance to farmers in the vicinity and residents who live near the park, and it has been found necessary to turn hunters loose in the park to assist with the thinning out process. The work is under the direction of the Park Ranger and is being done with the sanction of the Ontario Government. The deer are being sold for 10¢ a pound.

December 20, 1951 Henry Dick, who for a number of years has been manager or the Reliance Service Station here, has purchased the former Robinson’s Men’s Shop from Garth Brown, and has opened a Canadian Auto Store in that building. Mr. Dick expects that in the near future he will have a complete line of auto accessories and replacement parts.

December 1954 On Monday evening last, a local group of sports-minded citizens sat down at the Leamington High School and organized what will be known as the South Essex Hockey League. Five teams have already made their entry, namely Kingsville, Harrow, Blytheswood, Leamington and Wheatley. A sixth entry is being sought and will very probably be found. It may be Cottam that will enter as the sixth team. Anyone interested in playing for Wheatley, please notify Bud Morris as soon as possible. The Wheatley team will have to be organized very quickly because the first league game is scheduled for January 3rd, 1955. So come on fellows, let’s get organized.

Two new trustees join GECDSB

Two new trustees, Cheryl Lovell and Chandrika Abhang, have been appointed to the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB).

Cheryl Lovell will represent the Leamington/Pelee Island area, while Chandrika Abhang will represent LaSalle/ Amherstburg.

Their appointments were made following a public interview process and Board vote during a Special Board Meeting held December 15. Both trustees were sworn in on December 16 and attend the regular Board Meeting.

Flyers offense explodes for 18 total goals in three wins

By C. Scott Holland The Leamington Flyers proved not to be gracious Christmas hosts as they took two wins at home last week and also won on the road.

On Thursday, December 18, the Flyers outhustled and outscored Collingwood, winning 3-1 in front of a festive crowd of 710.

On Friday night at St. Michael’s, the Flyers shutout the Buzzers 4-0, then followed that with a second straight shutout Sunday night at home, hammering the Cobourg Cougars 11-0 in front of 522 fans.

Much of Thursday’s contest was a constant battle for puck possession and featured skirmishes along the boards and corners. The rivalry between the two has increased and intensified over the last two-and-a-half seasons.

While the opening frame was a rather mild one, the Flyers pummeled Blues starting goalie Colten Drillen-Roach with 17 shots and carried a 1-0 lead into the second frame.

But the second and third evolved into several incidents where clashes occurred and penalties often led to powerplay opportunities. The Flyers went 0-for-7 on the man

advantage while their defense blanked the Blues on five attempts.

The Flyers started Thursday’s scoring at 11:35, when a nice back pass by Landon Pickersgill to Josh Cleary resulted in a cannon that beat Drillen-Roach for a 1-0 lead.

A Collingwood two-onone breakaway at 3:43 of the second saw Brayden Stumpf trigger a right lane shot past Tre Altiman. It would be the lone puck Altiman would not stop.

With the game tied the contest became a bit rougher and before things got to a boiling point the Flyers went ahead 2-1 as Erik Muxlow controlled the puck behind the Blues’ net and fed Pickersgill who had a completely open right side into which he deposited the puck.

At 15:59 both teams forgot about sending Christmas cards and engaged in some shenanigans. Leamington emerged with a two-minute powerplay on which Pickersgill unleashed a blueline shot and Adrian Bosev shoveled the rebound past Drillen-Roach to make it 3-1.

Head coach Dale Mitchell reflected on the Flyers’ gritty win.

off a penalty to start the game after being assessed a warm-up violation— something I’ve never seen a home team receive since I’ve been in the league. If we continue to play like we did Thursday, we’ll be a competitive team down the stretch.”.

The Flyers visited the St. Michael’s Buzzers on Friday night as Tre Altiman showed his skills, turning aside all 34 shots he faced to earn his fifth shutout of the campaign.

The Flyers pummeled Buzzers’ goalie Jonathan Frattaroli with 43 shots scoring four times. They led 2-0 after one period and added two more in the third. Erik Muxlow led the Flyers’ offensive assault with a pair, while Spencer Vandenberg and Joshua Cleary fired one goal apiece.

Sunday on home ice, the Flyers drilled a shortstaffed Cobourg Cougars squad 11-0.

Gannon Hunter earned his first OJHL career shutout by turning aside 20 Cougars’ shots while Co-

bourg goalie Timothee Fengos was swamped by 76 Flyers’ shots.

Flyers forward Griffin Grundner ripped four goals to pace the attack, while Jak Thiessen, Landon Bernard, Erik Muxlow, Ethan Walk-

er, Spencer Vandenberg, Brayden Degelas and AP call-up Matthew Messman all tabbed one apiece.

Messman’s tally was his first OJHL marker.

The wins lofted the Flyers past the Buffalo Junior Sabres into sole posses-

sion of fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Flyers will be off for Christmas break and will start their stretch drive on Sunday, January 4 when they host the Caledon Admirals at 5:10 pm.

Sharks stymied for two losses despite effort

By Greg Coulter Be prepared, work hard and hope for a little luck sometimes is not enough to get you the outcome you hope for. As the Wheatley Omstead Sharks close out their 2025 schedule, all they are missing is a little luck.

Wednesday night, December 17 at home, the Sharks — despite an impressive 39 shot attack and a stellar 33 save performance by goaltender Ethan Davis — fell 2-0 to the Amherstburg Admirals.

The game was scoreless

after two periods and an unlucky random dumpin deflection off a Sharks defender was all the offence the visitors needed, closing out the game with an empty net marker late.

The Sharks were cursed for the second consecutive game with two clear goals being waved off.

One for an apparent whistle and one for an out of position goalie allegedly being caused by a Sharks forward.

“We didn’t get any breaks,” said Sharks coach Brad Hyatt. “We played well enough to

win.”

Saturday at home versus the league leading Essex 73s, the Sharks were at the top of their game right from the puck drop with Xander Zanier grabbing a first-minute power play snipe.

Late in the first, Vito Alfano upped the count to 2-0.

Sharks goalie Ethan Davis’ spectacular play in the second with 16 saves kept the visitors at bay until late, finally getting beat at the 18-minute mark.

Nursing a 2-1 lead after two, the Sharks fell victim to some undisciplined play and the visitors responded with two powerplay tallies to close out with a 5-2 victory.

The Sharks kick off January on the road at Mooretown and Essex before returning home on the 7th at 7:30 hosting Dresden.

LDSS Sports Report: Hoops for Heart took place December 4

By Leah Sharon The annual Hoops for Heart Fundraiser at Leamington District Secondary School took place on December 4 and was, yet again, an outstanding success.

Teams of three to six students participated in an exciting afternoon of 3-on-3 basketball, filling the gym with school spirit, friendly competition and enthusiastic cheers from the stands.

The event was organized by Ms. Setler and her senior leadership class, who worked hard to create a fun-filled and well-organized afternoon for both players and spectators. The event brought together students from all grades, whether they were competing on the court, cheering from the stands, or volunteering to help keep the tournament running smoothly.

From intense play to exciting door prizes to interactive halftime games, the event offered something for everyone and kept energy high throughout the afternoon.

Beyond the excitement of the games, the fundraiser aimed to help raise awareness about the importance of heart health.

Just under $1,000 was raised from the event, and all proceeds went directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gratitude was expressed to the tournament sponsor Domino’s, the teacher referees, the student organizers, and all the players who contributed to the event’s success.

After several rounds of intense and entertaining play, the Layup Legends emerged as the champions of the recreational league and the Rim Raptors as the winners of the competitive league. Hoops for Heart once again proved to be a highlight of many student’s school years. LDSS is already excited for next year’s Hoops for Heart and can’t wait to see which team will come out on top.
