Leamington budget calls for 2.5% tax increase

The budget, also the first under the Ontario government’s legislated Strong Mayor Powers, was adopted by council as presented at last week’s budget meetings. Mayor MacDonald said that they followed the new provincial guidelines “to a tee” and came up with a budget that council was happy with. Students boost Goodfellows hamper program By Mark Ribble The annual Leamington-Mersea Goodfellows Christmas Hamper program got its usual boost from students of Leamington District Secondary School on Friday, December 12 as they canvassed the town for food and cash
donations. Goodfellows President Bill Slater says that 192 local pre-registered families will receive Christmas Hampers this year, thanks to the efforts of the students and dozens more volunteers. As has happened for
more than 40 years now, LDSS students divide into two teams to tackle the task of collecting throughout Leamington. This year, the Bean Boyz team ran away with the trophy for most collected, besting the
RDC team by quite a bit. Cash donations are multiplied to match the amount of can/dry goods and the Bean Boyz came out with a 13,722 can total to RDC’s 4,861. Adult volunteers waited
at the Westmoreland Sales warehouse for the goods to come in and sorted them into bins ready for packing on Tuesday, December 16. About 21 of the over 100 students then returned to the warehouse to help fill
the hampers alongside Goodfellows volunteers on Tuesday morning. The hampers will be delivered by yet another army of volunteers on Saturday, December 20.

The Municipality of Leamington has provided an update on the sewer separation and road reconstruction work underway in the Sherk, Margaret, Audrey, Jane and Claire Street areas. Sherk Street is open to traffic. Short, intermittent lane closures may occur to accommodate remaining work, including the installation of pedestrian crossings and other final improvements. All sewer work on Margaret and Audrey Streets is now complete. Paving is scheduled for December 11-12, weather permitting. Driveways will be restored with temporary asphalt for the winter,

It provides visitors of all ages with a hands-on opportunity to discover and learn about early audio recording technology and the inventors and artists who used it. The museum currently displays over 100 vintage machines — most are in working order — and includes around 25,000 individual recordings. According to Founding Curator Steve Phillips, the museum features “the largest collection of Canadian-made machines anywhere in the world.” The Gramophone Museum will observe the following holiday hours: closed Christmas Eve December 24, Christmas Day December 25, and Boxing Day December 26. Open Saturday December 27. Closed New Year’s Eve December 31 and New Year’s Day January 1. On January 2, the museum will resume regular opening hours of Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.

On Friday, December 19, the Pelee Gramophone Museum will be presenting “A Celebration of Sounds of the Season.” The one-hour event begins at 7 p.m. at the museum at 475 Bevel Line Road, Leamington (located in the South Point Community Church building). Admission is free. Participants will experience the voices and music of a century ago through vintage recordings played on authentic technology of the era. Program highlights include some of the earliest holiday pop songs, traditional Christmas carols, and messages from clergy. The evening is sure to be a heart-warming occasion for family members of all ages. Gators take a bite out of hunger By Paul Forman A generous spirit was in abundance at Gore Hill Public School as students collected an amazing 3,698 items over a two-week campaign this December. Organized by the classes of Mr. Ligotino and Mme Mastronardi, students engaged in a friendly competition to bring in canned goods, winter clothing, toys and hygiene items for the shelves of Leamington’s Salvation Army. Some students from the organizing classes shared their thoughts on the rel-
evance of their recent endeavour. Kara Wiebe said, “It’s important we do this because it will really help a lot of people.” “We are giving to support those that are hungry,” said Chase Pulley from Mr. Ligotino’s class. Aviane Martin from Mme Mastronardi’s class spoke about the toys and clothing collected, saying, “The toys will help keep the kids entertained over Christmas and the winter gear will help to prevent frostbite.”

AUDREY’S STUDENTS BRING MERRIMENT TO SENIORS
Two groups of children from Audrey’s Daycare at St. Louis School made their way across the street to the Sun Parlour Home on Friday, December 12 to bring the joy of the holiday season to residents there. The kids brought hand crafted Christmas Cards and sang Christmas songs for the residents who thoroughly enjoyed the treat. Erie Shores HealthCare updates masking policy for flu season To help protect patients, staff and physicians, Erie Shores HealthCare is reinforcing key Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) measures. As of Monday, December 15, masking is mandatory for all staff and physicians within two metres of a patient during direct patient care. This applies across all clinical care settings. Current respiratory virus indicators include projected increases in influenza and RSV over the next
two weeks. Locally, influenza cases have risen in the community and within the hospital, with several cases reported. Additional masking and respiratory etiquette guidance remains in place, as follows. Non-clinical areas: Masking is not required in non-clinical spaces such as cafeterias, offices and hallways unless otherwise directed. Patients with ARI symptoms (Acute Respiratory
Infection): Must wear a medical mask when outside their bedspace (if tolerated) and in outpatient areas such as the Emergency Department and Diagnostic Imaging (if tolerated). Visitors: Visitors with respiratory symptoms are recommended to avoid entering the hospital. All visitors are advised to wear a medical mask while visiting. A week to go and it’s way too cold for December
Well, we’ve spent a couple of weeks being as cold as ice, after last Christmas was fairly mild and with one week to go, it looks like a bit of a spinning wheel when it comes to stormy weather in the region. And spinning our wheels seems to be the norm these days, with colder than normal December temperatures creating the possibility of a white Christmas for some, and a blue Christmas for others. That’s if
we make it through December. Some people don’t remember when ice and snow turned early December into a winter wonderland, but it’s important that we don’t forget. Me, I’m reminded of what I used to call the most wonderful time of the year. Now, it’s just depressing. I guess that’s why they call it the blues and why we look so forward to spring once the temps start to dip. Then we ex-
perience the summertime blues instead of the wintertime ones. If we could stay forever young, we’d be eternally optimistic that spring would finally arrive, but we all know the waiting is the hardest part. Soon, the man with all the toys will be up on the housetop, causing every good girl and boy to take a look to see if it’s true. For us who are experiencing the twilight time of our lives, we just want the warmth of the sun,
1947 Ford for $60 In 1960, Toronto teenager Paul Calderone began looking for a car and found one at Target Auto Wreckers on Eastern Avenue: a 1947 Ford two-door sedan in running condition for $60. Paul already had $40 from his paper route but he was $20 short of the asking price. No problem. The folks at Target delivered the car to Paul’s parents’ house, parked it in their driveway, jacked it up, mounted the body on four concrete blocks, removed all four wheels and tires, and took them back to Target. As soon as Paul earned another $5, he and a friend went to Target, picked up a wheel

One of the most popular American rock and roll groups was formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. CWL HELPS ST. VINCENT FOOD BANK
The St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Leamington got some much-needed help as the Catholic Women’s League pitched in to help prepare 110 Christmas Boxes for those in need on December 8. Each family will receive three boxes of nutritious food, including a 10 pound bag of potatoes. Families pre-registered for the assistance and the Catholic Women’s League makes a monthly monetary donation to the Food Bank through the funds they raise at Chances Gaming Lounge. Photo submitted

It would be hard to pinpoint a recent year where Pigeon Bay is filled with ice in mid-December, but this month’s frigid temperatures have sure made plenty of ice along the Lake Erie shoreline. With the latter half of this week calling for a warm-up, fishermen and skaters are warned to stay off the ice until it’s been frozen for several weeks. The Wheatley Water Treatment Plant has been fully rehabilitated following the fire that took place in September 2023, according to a press release Monday from the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission. Plant operations are now fully back online and the plant is once again supplying safe, high-quality drinking water to residents in Wheatley and Tilbury. Throughout the repair process, many components of the plant have been replaced with the newest available technology to ensure longevity and reliable production for years to come.

Recycling program starts in January; smaller carts available in February There are upcoming changes to the region’s recycling program being implemented by Circular Materials, the organization responsible for managing residential recycling collection in Windsor-Essex. There will now be a cart exchange option available. As part of the transition to a modernized recycling system, each household has or will receive a new 360-litre wheeled, lidded recycling cart.

The new recycling program will not begin until January, and the new cart is designed to hold two weeks’ worth of recyclables and accommodate a broader range of accepted materials under the enhanced system. Why the 360-Litre Cart? Circular Materials introduced the 360 litre cart size based on several important considerations. • Bi-Weekly Collection Continues: Recycling will remain on an every-other-week schedule. Many households currently set out two blue boxes, equivalent to about 320 litres. The new 360-litre cart provides added capacity to support current and future recycling volumes. • More Accepted Materials: Residents will now be able to recycle items such as hot and cold beverage cups, black plastic containers, frozen juice containers, ice cream tubs, deodorant and toothpaste tubes, and more. • All Materials Must Fit in the Cart: Recyclables must be placed inside the cart with the lid fully closed for collection. Items placed beside the cart will not be collected. Circular Materials recommends using the new cart for at least three bi-weekly collection cycles (six weeks) before considering an exchange. Only one cart exchange is permitted per address. If the 360-litre cart does not meet your household’s needs, residents may request an exchange for a smaller 240-litre cart. Exchanges are expected to begin after February 1, 2026, subject to supply availability. Nancy Oswald
Graceful, Humble, Compassionate, Kind, Faithful, Selfless, Devoted — These are the words that reflect the Heart and Spirit of Nancy Oswald. With hearts full of love and gratitude, we honour the beautiful life of Nancy, born on February 21, 1938, and passed away Thursday, December 11, 2025. Nancy was the embodiment of warmth and humility, devoted to everyone she loved. A true lady in every sense, she carried herself with poise and quiet confidence, qualities admired by many. Nancy is now reunited with her loving husband Bob, to whom she was married for over 62 years. Her incredible patience and steadfast support were the foundation of their partnership. Together, they lived a love story that will be passed down through generations. She is also joyfully reunited with her best friend and mother, Florence, her loving father, Earl McKague, and dear sister, Evelyn. Nancy always led with a soft hand and a generous heart, always placing others before herself. From her childhood in the small town of Grass Hill, where her parents owned the local general store, she carried the values her mother taught her: honesty, purpose and love through every community she called home. Nancy’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. As a mother, Nancy was always there, often in the background, steady and consistent, never missing an opportunity to tell her three children how proud she was of them. She brought balance to their lives with her calming presence, offering reassurance and quiet strength. To her, there was no problem that couldn’t be worked through with patience, perspective and love. Her family often found comfort in her beautifully predictable nature reflected in her routines, her presence and her endearing way of making every space feel safe and familiar. One of her greatest gifts was her subtle humour, which was never meant to draw attention. She cherished time in the kitchen with her grandkids and loved beach days filled with sunshine and ice cream. As an elegant, introverted fashionista, Nancy loved finding bargains and truly treasured the friendships, sunny days and stories of her Florida winters. She often found joy in music, whether singing, playing guitar or keyboard, and above all, she loved dancing cheek to cheek with the love of her life, Bob. Nancy is fondly remembered by her sister Ann, a woman she always admired. She is deeply cherished by her children, Jim (Sherri), Sue (Lindsey) and Joe (Tracy), who carry forward her kind heart and her loving legacy. She is forever treasured by her grandchildren, Brianne (Vik), Jeff (Brooke), Sarah ( Jamal), Lauren (Cooper), Regg and Zeke, who will fiercely guard her Peanut Butter Pie recipe and proudly keep her Thanksgiving traditions alive. Her great-grandchildren, Mia, Maks, Hazel, Mabel and Arti, will dearly miss her kind eyes and her incredibly sweet nature. Sincere appreciation is extended to the Comfort Care staff at Windsor Regional Hospital Met Campus. Heartfelt gratitude sent to the Schlegel Villages at St. Clair for the extraordinary care the staff so lovingly provided to Nancy and her family. A private family gathering has been arranged in Port Elgin, Ontario, where the family’s greatest memories will continue to live on. Carol Crosby was born in Detroit, Michigan, but spent most of her life in Windsor, Leamington and Kingsville raising her family. She passed away Friday, December 12, 2025. Carol was the beloved wife of Richard (deceased 2018), adored mother of Kim (Dave, deceased 2019), Karen ( John), Ross (Kim), Joe (Lynn) and Paul, respected grandmother of Dennis (Haley), Laila (Vern), John (Molly), Richie, Phil (Cara), Nick (Madison), Christian (Brittany), Jaclyn, Stephen (Melissa), Daniel, Jonathan (deceased) and Joseph (Shilah). She was blessed with 15 great-grandchildren. Carol had a very strong faith in God and was active in Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Windsor for many years. When Carol and Richard moved to Leamington, their community was St. John’s Anglican Church. She cherished her friendships within the congregation and was very active over the many years there. Carol had style. Shopping was her cardio. She was smart, funny and creative. She was a force! She raised her children to be strong, resilient and to believe that we could do anything. She will be missed. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at St. John’s Anglican Church in Leamington, 60 Erie Street, North, at 11 a.m. Luncheon to follow. A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the Green Heart Farm, 866 Road 2 West, Kingsville, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. John’s Anglican Church and Hospice Leamington. From the Leamington Post December 12, 1963 A recommendation to add six acres to the Leamington District Secondary School grounds will be considered early next year by the school board. Purchase of the property has been suggested by the board’s long range planning committee, which said extra land is needed to provide adequate area for a physical education program for 1,500 students. Committee chairman Robert Hewett said six acres could be purchased from Frank Moauro, whose property is located west of the present school grounds. Mr. Hewett said that acquisition of the land would enable the school to move its quarter mile track to an east-west position and add a separate football field running north-south. ——— The Leamington District Secondary School Board has decided to clear a controversial crop of Christmas trees off 10 acres of property it owns in the village of Wheatley. The land was purchased several years ago by the board for a second high school location. Board members made it very plain that they were not planning to give any Christmas trees away to the general public. William C. Dibbley has been chosen to dispose of the scotch pines and will have his bulldozer moving as soon as he can. Hugh Lee of Wheatley said 25 of the trees had been given to Wheatley United Church, which sold them to raise funds for charity. Leamington’s Morgan Brown suggested the trees be left right where they were. —— Mersea Township council is looking for a new police constable. He’ll be the replacement for Constable Ronald Stratton, who handed in his resignation last week — about five months after he was hired. Constable Stratton said he was resigning at the end of the year because he was overworked and hadn’t had any time off since he started the job on July 1. Reeve Ellison Bell said Stratton had agreed to take care of all police protection in the southern part of the township — south of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway tracks — for $6,500 a year. Constable Stratton came to Mersea from Sarnia to replace Constable Roy Boles, who resigned for similar reasons. —— Santa Claus will be on a Queens Street throne this Saturday between 2 and 4 pm to meet children of the town and surrounding district. The street will be blocked from Talbot Street to John Street for the occasion. The Leamington Boys’ Trumpet Band will be in attendance and candy and balloons will be distributed to the youngsters. The event is sponsored by the Leamington Jaycees. —— The first woman to ever run for a seat on Wheatley council fell three votes short in Monday’s municipal election. Mrs. Doris Creswell, housewife and catering service operator, placed third in the race for two council seats behind the incumbents Kenneth Knutson and Alfred Whaley. Village Clerk Cec Lougheed counted the ballot twice and said he doubted if a recount would be necessary. Chairman Carlos Meleg said this was the largest crowd of youngsters Santa has interviewed since the Jaycees have sponsored Santa’s visits here. —— Lake Erie perch fisherman have pulled their nets until March 15, 1968 and most local fisherman are in favour of the shortened season, as there are now several million pounds of perch in storage. Harold Julien, manager of the Kingsville Fishermen’s Co-operative, said fishermen agreed by petition last fall to shorten the season on Lake Erie. Perch is currently bringing in 10 cents a pound on the floor. —— Mayor Fred DeSantis told council Monday night that the police commission had suggested hiring another constable to enforce the parking meter bylaw and also discussed the installation of a walkie-talkie system between Leamington and Kingsville police when only one man is on duty. —— With their decisive 79-35 win over St. Anne’s of Tecumseh, the Kingsville Senior Cavaliers established themselves as league contenders. Wheatley Omstead Sharks raise $1,954 for local cancer care The Wheatley Omstead Sharks have once again demonstrated the strong community spirit that defines both the team and the town of Wheatley. This fall, the Sharks partnered with Erie Shores Health Foundation to host two special awareness nights in support of local cancer care. The team dedicated their
October 29 game to Breast Cancer Awareness and their November 26 game to Prostate Cancer Awareness. Together, the Sharks community raised an inspiring $1,954.25 that will help enhance cancer care at Erie Shores HealthCare — a need close to the hearts of many local families.

Flyers beat Cougars at home, then fall to Royals on road
By C. Scott Holland The Leamington Flyers split a pair of games last week, leaving them sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. On a bitter cold Thursday night, December 11, some 675 fans left the warmth of their residences to bring Christmas cheer to needy children in Essex County and watch the Flyers defeat the visiting Burlington Cougars 7-2. Then on Friday night at Markham, the Flyers dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to the Royals. An avalanche of 320 stuffed animals and pajamas rained onto the ice just 2:38 into Thursday’s game on Teddy Bear toss night in Leamington. The donations benefit Toys 4 Tots and Lola’s Pajama Fairy Project. That first goal came as Ethan Walker tucked in a Landon Pickersgill rebound. For the Flyers, it was the start of an offensive outburst as they took a 4-1 first period lead en route to the victory as goalie Tre Altiman turned aside 29 of 31 shots, while the Cougars’ Connor Haffner halted 29 of 36. Near the five-minute mark, a miscue by Flyers’ goalie Tre Altiman left Reid Forster with a large opening in which to put the puck, momentarily tying the game At 12:13, Walker scored his second of the night on a powerplay from Landon Bernard and Griffin Grundner to put the Flyers up 2-1. Not longer afterward, Preston Otting and Ashton Darocy set up Brendan Cooke, who was on the doorstep and flicked the puck past Haffner. Spencer Vandenberg and Brayden Lappalainen followed up less than one minute later as they hooked up with Reid Hayes who ripped a shot from the slot which bounced between Haffner’s pads. Burlington notched the lone goal of the second frame to cut the margin to 4-2. In the third, the Flyers’ defense kept the Cougars off stride and unable to get any good shots on Altiman during the period’s first 10 minutes. Meanwhile the offense boosted the Flyers’ lead. A slick tip-in by Erik Muxlow, who redirected Pickersgill’s left lane shot at 2:50, made it 5-2. Just over midway through the frame, Lappalainen and Brendan Cooke went on a two-on-one breakaway on which a left lane to right lane pass that Cooke cannoned into the net. Bernard and Cooke provided the finesse for the Flyers’ final goal as they sent Lappalainen driving through the defense, who drilled a right lane shot that completed the scoring. On Friday night the Flyers and Markham Royals skated to a scoreless first period tie. Only 35 seconds elapsed in the second when Josh Cleary’s shot vaulted the Flyers into a 1-0 lead. However, that was only time they held an edge. During a five-minute stretch late in the second, the Flyers allowed Markham three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third. Ethan Walker cashed in a powerplay play goal at 11:26 to make it a 3-2 game. With 90 seconds remaining, Hunter was pulled for an extra attacker, but the Royals notched an empty-net goal to defeat the Flyers 4-2.

“We came out and played a really good game against Burlington,” said head coach Dale Mitchell. “However, we laid an egg in Markham. We need to learn how to play back-to-back games. We are too soft on pucks and become too individualistic when we are losing. It’s very disappointing.” The Flyers will play two of their three games this
coming weekend at home. Thursday they host the Collingwood Blues at 7:10 pm. Friday night they’re at St. Michael’s, and on Sunday they’ll host the Cobourg Cougars at 6:10 pm. They’ll return to action after Christmas break on Sunday, January 4 when they host the Caledon Admirals at 5:10 pm.
PJs and TEDDY BEARS TOSSED FOR CHARITY The ice surface at the December 11 Leamington Flyers game was littered for a brief period for all the right reasons as fans celebrated a home team goal at the 2:38 mark of the first period by tossing items that will warm hearts this Christmas. 320 items were tossed onto the ice in total and will be given to Leamington & Area Toys 4 Tots and Lola’s Pajama Fairy Project who will distribute the items to deserving families. Sharks drop two games
By Greg Coulter The saying goes, “It’s better to give than to receive.” Unfortunately for the Wheatley Omstead Sharks, it meant giving away four points in the league standings after a pair of losses last week. Wednesday, December 10 at home, the team skated stride for stride with powerhouse Lakeshore while having the upper hand in the shot count. After falling behind by two, the Sharks rallied with consecutive power play goals by Xander Zanier and Jaydon Ferguson by the 16-minute mark of the second period to gain a tie heading into the third. Despite a 20-9 shot advantage down the stretch, the Canadiens capitalized on two of their limited opportunities. The Sharks made a valiant attempt with a two-man advantage late, but couldn’t narrow the lead, dropping a 4-2 decision. Ethan Davis played well in net despite the loss. Coach Brad Hyatt said, “I thought we
played well enough to win, especially with our pushback to tie the game as well as the numerous opportunities we developed in the third. The top teams take advantage of their chances.” Somewhat disillusioned 24 hours later at Walpole Island after the tough home loss, the team with sugar plums dancing in their heads stumbled out of the gate, fell behind early and never seemed to develop a flow in their attack, losing 6-3. “We just didn’t seem to be mentally ready and Walpole Island always plays us tough, believing they can beat us,” said Coach Hyatt. Carson Murracas, Josh Bleau and Josh Chauvin tallied in the 6-3 setback. A bright spot for the Sharks saw rookie call up Tyler Franklin earn his first junior point with an assist on the opening goal. Sharks close out the calendar year at home on Wednesday, December 17 at 7:30 pm versus Amherstburg, with their final home stand on Saturday the 20th at 6 pm against league-leading Essex.

By Leah Sharon After a few off weeks at Leamington District Secondary School, athletes were eager to jump back into their sporting seasons. The week began with the junior girls volleyball team dropping their first set to Catholic Central before rallying to win the next two. The senior girls swept all three sets against the same opponent. On the basketball court, the junior boys fell 63-33 to Belle River, but the senior boys responded with an incredible 52–49 victory. On December 3, LDSS swimmers competed at a meet, with full results still to come. The momentum continued into games on December 4, as the junior girls volleyball team battled Assumption, losing the first two sets but taking the third. The senior girls earned another clean sweep against Assumption, and continue to build a stronger team dynamic as they learn to play more cohesively each game. In basketball action, the junior boys secured a 43–30 win over UMEI, and the senior boys capped off the stretch
with a 58–43 victory against Lamothe-Cadillac. In addition to the various sporting events at LDSS, the LDSS EcoTeam held its first ever Thrifting & Gifting Event. Following is a summary of the event written by Ms. L. Jeffery. On Wednesday, December 3, the LDSS EcoTeam hosted a Thrifting & Gifting Event in the school library. Staff and students donated hundreds of items of clothing, accessories and housewares to support the cause, with all items priced at $1 or $2. LDSS Minister of the Environment and event organizer Ollie Wilson explained the motivation for holding the event: “We wanted to support our local circular economy, reducing textile waste while giving members of our school community the opportunity to find some unique items for themselves or to gift to family and friends. We also wanted to support two of our most important community partners. Through sales, we managed to raise $430, which was donated to SWO Gleaners, and all unsold items were donated to Thrift

Capitals U13 Blue win Orangeville tournament
The Southpoint Capitals U13 Blue Local League team went undefeated in six games to take the championship at the Ray Hunt Memorial Classic in Orangeville over the December 12-14 weekend. The Caps started the tournament on Friday with some tough opposition, beating Saugeen Shores and West Carleton both by identical
2-0 scores. The Capitals got outstanding goaltending from Brock Hamilton throughout the tournament, but his play on Friday set the tone for the entire weekend. On Saturday, the Capitals beat two Orangeville teams by 9-0 and 6-0 scores, sending them to the semi-final against a third Orangeville team, whom they beat 7-2. The finals pitted South-
point against West Carleton again, and this time they skated away with a 4-0 victory and the tournament title. Ethan Hillier and Thomas Fischer showed true leadership the entire weekend, with Hiller leading the tournament in scoring with 11 points in six games. His team voted him MVP for the weekend. Koehyn Fernandes led
the team in goals with six, and Milo Cervini also excelled offensively. David Boutros and Emmitt Buffalo-Amand each scored their first goals of the season over the weekend. Coach Jeremy Maagdeleyn said the players demonstrated true Southpoint style hockey with offense sprewad throughout the lineup and strong defensive efforts each game.
