By Paul Forman Scales Nature Park of Orillia brought their traveling reptile show to the Point Pelee National Park Visitor Centre this past weekend for three sessions that provided information about some misunderstood creatures, and gave both the young and old an opportunity to get up close and personal with one of their 12 snakes.

Offered as an outreach program that stresses the importance of conservation relating to native reptiles and amphibians, educators Gab Diez and Nolan Felstiad of Scales Nature Park have been making stops at parks throughout Ontario this summer.

Three acts rock Seacliff

With files from Paul Forman and Rick Latam It was a triple bill up on the hill at Seacliff Park Saturday, August 22 as the Music OnThe42 concert series brought a trio of rock acts to the Sunset Amphitheatre stage.

With an early 5 pm start, local guitar phenom Christian Vegh took the stage first.

From humble beginnings with a local coffee house session, award-winning record-

ing artist Vegh brought his four-piece band and an array of guitars to the stage for a hard-driving rock set. Serving as the opener for the rock triple bill, the Berklee College of Music graduate and his bandmates played many of their originals, along with a sprinkling of iconic Canadian rock and roll from the past.

Next up, the always popular Rick Labonte and the Band of Brothers took to the stage and rocked it out with a set of popular

tunes sure to vault the memory back to the 1970s and ’80s.

The night’s final act and headliner was Windsor rock and roll band Teaze, who had great success that spanned part of the 1970s and ’80s. Their hard-driving sound lit up the park and brought a fitting end to a rock night at the hill.

The free concert was co-produced by the Municipality of Leamington and The Bank Theatre.

A spirited effort from The Ashley Lynn Experience came to a screeching halt when a pair of torrential downpours wreaked havoc on the Two Creeks Conservation Area this past Sunday evening, August 23. Extremely wet grounds and further predicted rain ended the concert after only 20 minutes. The Port of Cleveland stated it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Milo Harbour Inc. of Wheatley to “initiate a new crosslake truck ferry service between Northeast Ohio

Stuart McFadden, director of economic development with the municipality, said he’s aware of the MOU. “Milo owns property on both sides of the harbour in Wheatley. We have been in casual conversation with Milo about this project probably for the past decade,” he said. “It was a concept. They knew they had lots of work that needed to be done to validate the project. We look forward to sitting down with the Milo group to better understand the project and understand the role the municipality has so we can ask questions in regard to local impact.”

That local impact would involve the truck traffic to and from the harbour.

“We will obviously have a lot of questions to ask on how it might impact the community and what answers will come,” McFadden said.

The proposed project has the Wheatley community buzzing, with numerous comments on social media from residents.

ers head in each direction daily. The trucks would drop the trailers off at the ferry in one port, with different trucks picking them off at the other once they clear customs, according to the Port of Cleveland’s press release.

And the customs issue is what is sticking with Chatham-Kent–Leamington MP Dave Epp. With the hope from the Port of Cleveland that the operation would be up and running in less than two years, Epp is left scratch-

“They have not approached my office,” he said. “But the number one starting point – does Milo have an agreement with CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) to staff and put the capital into the port? Everything else is moot.”

CBSA has just staffed the freshly opened Gordie Howe bridge. Epp wonders how intent the border teams would be to have to staff another entry point nearby.

“Three hundred trucks a day. Canada has a huge problem with guns coming into the country,” Epp said.

He also pointed to Picton in Prince Edward County near Belleville. A similar effort took place there, but Epp said the CBSA refused to staff it.

Pelee Island is also a port of entry for aircraft and watercraft into Canada and is staffed by CBSA personnel.

Combined with the two bridges and tunnel in Windsor, that is four existing crossing points in the area.

Detroit and Windsor shared a truck ferry in the past. It ran from 1990 to 2023 and dealt largely with the transport of haz-

ardous materials. This ferry service shut down due to a reported lack of public funding to support the operation.

CBSA officials did not get back to us by press time on the matter. The same goes for the Port of Cleveland.

Milo Harbour Inc.’s Kieran Stewart said the company sees it as a win-win concept for all involved.

“This project represents a strategic opportunity for Wheatley, as well as the Province of Ontario and all of Canada,” Stewart, the project director, said in a media release. “The team at Milo Harbour Inc. are committed to supporting Ontario and Canada’s plan to diversify trade and ensure our supply chains are stronger than ever.”

Should the CBSA approve the Cleveland-Wheatley concept, and should their sister organization in the U.S. agree, Epp said there’d need to be significant improvements made in Wheatley harbour, such as dredging, to support the effort.

And through it all, the commercial fishing industry has to be respected.

Howard Gabert, the chair of the Wheatley Task Force, said they are taking a wait-and-see approach to the whole thing, since it’s currently only a memorandum of understanding between two private companies.

“We’re definitely asking questions about this,” he said. “We’ve got many of them, including traffic issues, impact on the harbour itself and also on the commercial fishing industry.”

Gabert said they are in a state of “cautious optimism.”

“There is potential for economic benefit here, but we want to make sure it doesn’t come at the cost of losing access to the waterfront,” he added. “We have to be careful to not interrupt the existing industry down there.”

Despite it being so early in the process to develop this initiative and the potential hurdles it faces, Chatham-Kent politicians are excited.

“This MOU between Milo Harbour in Wheatley and the Port of Clevland is an exciting opportunity that could further position Chatham-Kent as an important gate-

way for trade between Canada and the United States,” Mayor Darrin Canniff said. “A direct freight connection across Lake Erie has the potential to attract investment, support local businesses and create new opportunities for economic growth. We’re excited to learn more about the project and better understand what it could mean for Chatham-Kent’s economic development, infrastructure, agriculture, and future investment across Chatham-Kent.”

West Kent Councillor Lauren Anderson said there is “tremendous potential” for the project.

“A direct connection to Cleveland could create new opportunities for Wheatley and Chatham-Kent, and we’re excited to learn more about the details, including the potential benefits and the potential impacts on local infrastructure and agricultural community.”

However, the potential economic benefits and how to manage the truck traffic are moot points “until the CBSA says they’re on side here,” Epp said.

Ready or not ... here comes fall!

The mornings are definitely getting cooler and while we may still have a few more weeks of summer-like weather, the signs of fall are starting to set in.

This ushers in my favourite time of year with colours, smells and pleasant temperatures that can’t help but put a smile on your face.

Is it a harbinger of the winter months to follow?

Yes, unfortunately it is, but the relief from the summer heat for most of us is what we’re after here.

Pumpkin spice items are showing up at restaurants and retailers, and although I’m not a huge fan, I know a lot of people who are.

Don’t get me wrong. I love pumpkins and I love spice. But other than in a pumpkin pie, I’m not sure if I love them both together.

I’m a plain double-double coffee kind of guy, so the pumpkin spice drinks don’t do it for me. And those flavoured coffee creamers? No. I’ll do a pumpkin spice muffin occasionally, but

it’s not something I get excited for as they arrive at the local coffee shops — and they have arrived.

For me, fall brings the best of the seasons. A little bit of summer, a little bit of winter and even a little spring are mixed into our fall weather.

It has us looking forward to hockey, Halloween and holidays, the Triple-H trifecta of the autumn season.

Other than those aggressive little creatures, fall brings a lot of good things. We start to see the birds migrating and the monarchs too. Those who have to mow their lawn can count more days between cuttings as the cool weather slows down the process.

Remembrance Day usually brings the realization that we are in it for the long haul. Sometimes rain, sometimes snow, sometimes cold windy weather. You never know what you’re going to get and it’s fitting that the weather is usually crappy for November 11, knowing what those soldiers endured that was much worse than standing in the cold for an hour.

Guess Who this column is about

It’s hard to believe that so many Canadian artists had major hits south of the border but were often ignored by radio stations in their own country, and found it difficult to crack through radio in general.

For instance, who could forget The Guess Who? However, in 1965, before legislation was passed requiring a certain percentage of airtime be given to Canadian artists to avoid that prejudice, Winnipeg band Chad Allen and the Expressions elected to leave their name off their new single, “Shakin’ All Over”. It was a ploy by the record label to fool radio DJs into thinking they were a part of the British Invasion.

They simply labeled the record “Guess Who.” The name stuck and the rest was history.

“Shakin’ All Over” reached number 22 on the Hot 100 in July of 1965.

The Guess Who toured the States as part of a performing package with the Turtles, Eddie Hodges and The Crystals.

Band members in those early days included Allan, Randy Bachman, Bob Ashley, Garry Peterson

and Jim Kale.

Kingsville author returns home

Kingsville native, author and illustrator Chris Paul (Rainbows) Farias returned home last week to help promote their new book.

Farias is the author and illustrator of Guinea Pigs Don’t Wear Pants, a children’s picture book about self-expression, belonging and the freedom to be yourself. Since its release, the book has become part of a much larger conversation about representation, censorship and the growing politicization of children’s literature.

Born in Leamington and raised in Kingsville, Farias started kindergarten at St. John de Brebeuf Catholic School in 1986, later attending St. Clair College in Windsor, studying Graphic Design with a focus on illustration.

“I was born here. I grew up here. I went to school here. I learned how to draw here,” says Farias.

“I thought I was coming home to do a few events, but being back here made me fall in love with my home all over again.”

Guinea Pigs Don’t Wear Pants has attracted high-profile supporters including Rosie O’Donnell, Margaret Cho, Fred Penner, Mae Martin and Alexandra Billings.

Billings called it “one of the most important books to come out in decades,” while O’Donnell praised both the book and Farias as “brilliant.”

The creator and 2SLGBTQIA+ advocate says the book has also attracted some hostility online. Rather than retreat from the backlash, Farias and publisher Rebel Goose Books turned it into a campaign to get more books into children’s hands by donating a copy through a program called We Need Diverse Books for every negative comment they received.

The homecoming was part of an extensive tour that has already included

more than 40 stops. Farias will continue touring Ontario through the end of September before taking the book to Alberta and British Columbia in November.

For the kid who started kindergarten in Kingsville in 1986 and learned to become an illustrator in Windsor, the return carries particular significance.

This time, Farias came home with the kind of book they once needed to find there.

On Wednesday, August 19, members of the Hogs For Hospice committee met with the big winners of the most recent Hogs 50-50 raffle. On August 14, two tickets were drawn as this year’s winners, with Roger Roehler of Essex taking home the big prize of $245,725 and Kris Ennis of Cottam riding away with a 2026 Harley Davidson Street Glide. Roehler had been on a trip across the continent to Alaska on his bike, but after a couple of breakdowns that got him as far as Jasper, AB, he turned back and came home. Roehler received the big call from the Hogs committee while he was waiting to cross the border back into Canada at Windsor. The truck driver and his family will pay off some debt, buy a new bike and put the rest away for retirement. As for the Harley Davidson winner, Kris Ennis, he has plans to fix up his old bike, which he hasn’t been able to ride in a number of years. Both winners were happy and excited to receive their prizes. By Mark Ribble The Kingsville Horticultural Society held a tree dedication celebration for several life members on Wednesday, August 19 at Lakeside Park.

About 30 people attended and were treated to cake and lem-

pawpaw shoot has sprout up in its place so they intend on that tree eventually growing into a replacement.

Lastly, a shared magnolia tree at the OPP station on Division Street South was dedicated to Beverly Beacom, Anne Rudy and Glenice Klesh.

All trees are adorned with a marble marker depicting the honouree’s names.

Kingsville Horticultural society honours life members onade before President Annette Cooper spoke about those who were being honoured.

She also spoke about the current members who give so much of their time to keeping the gardens of Kingsville beautiful and blooming.

Kingsville’s new Parks and Recreation Director Nada Tremblay was on hand for the celebration and updated those in attendance with plans for the Peace Garden at Lakeside Park.

Councillor Thomas Neufeld also spoke and expressed his appreciation to the volunteers and members for all of the hard work they’ve put in over the years.

Horticultural Society long-time member Alan Batke thanked Councillor Neufeld for his long-time involvement with the society and the former Communities In Bloom organization.

Then it was time to dedicate trees to life members with the first tree being a curly willow dedicated to life member Judi Lacey, who was in attendance.

Next up, adjacent to

the aforementioned willow tree is a service berry tree that was dedicated to Don and Deb Neufeld.

Down the path toward the beach grows a white birch dedicated to Jim Laman.

Close by was the spot where a nicely growing pawpaw tree was to be dedicated to Henry and Val Vriesen, but it was destroyed in a recent storm. A newly rooted

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Argentina Foscarino on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at the age of 86, surrounded by her loving family.

Cherished mother of Tony Foscarino, Connie (Dino) Mastromattei, Dominic (Monica) Foscarino and Marisa ( Joe) Fortuna. Adored nonna of Alessia Foscarino, Gianluca Foscarino, Joseph Fortuna and Ava Fortuna. Dear sister of Angelo (Nina) Sabelli, and Zia of Theresa (Mario) Orlando and great-niece Isabella. Dear daughter of the late Giustino and Maria Sabelli, and daughter-in-law of the late Pasquale and Concetta Foscarino. Predeceased by her sister-in-law Maria Foscarino.

Her family was her pride and joy, especially her grandchildren. She was the happiest when she was in the kitchen cooking and baking for them. She will be remembered for her kind heart and selfless love. She will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends.

A special thank you to the Erie Shores Hospice team for the excellent and compassionate care given to our mom and family during this difficult time.

A family legacy of care at Erie Shores Hospice Some families share stories about work, vacations, or grandchildren around the dinner table.

For the Vandervecht family, conversations often turn to Erie Shores Hospice.

What began more than a decade ago with Homer and Betty looking for a meaningful way to give back in retirement has grown into a family tradition of compassion.

Today, several members of their family volunteer with Hospice – across many different roles, but all with the same purpose: helping patients and their loved ones feel cared for, supported, and never alone.

Homer has been a familiar face at the Reception desk since Erie Shores Hospice first opened its doors in April 2016.

“We were volunteering at Erie Shores HealthCare when we heard about the new Hospice being built in Leamington,” he recalls. “We were actually here the morning of April 6, 2016, before there were any residents. I’ve been at the Reception desk every Monday morning ever since.”

For Betty, becoming a volunteer was a way to give back after retirement.

“We were busy golfing and travelling,” she says.

“But it felt like we were doing things just for us.

I wanted us to do something for others.”

As a Personal Care Assistant, Betty has discovered that some of the most meaningful moments are often the simplest.

“I remember a resident who was non-verbal and needed help at mealtimes.

Sometimes she would close her mouth tightly shut and refuse to eat.

I found that if I simply held her hand, she would relax and eat. She would look me right in the eye and smile. Even the staff noticed how much she looked forward to our visits. Holding her hand, and then seeing that smile

- we just connected.”

Stories like Betty’s remind us that hospice care isn’t always about grand gestures. Often, it’s found in quiet moments of comfort, dignity, and human connection.

Inspired by Homer and Betty’s experiences, their son Richard and daughter-in-law Carol eventually found their own places at Hospice. Richard tends the gardens, while Carol welcomes families through homecooked meals prepared in the kitchen.

“Betty and Homer would talk about all the wonderful things they were doing at Hospice,” says Carol. “They always seemed so happy and fulfilled. They inspired us to join them, and now the whole family volunteers.”

- Carol Vandervecht Although each family member serves in a different way, they’ve all discovered that every role contributes to the comfort and care families experience.

As one of the first people visitors meet during his reception shifts, Homer has watched countless families arrive carrying uncertainty.

“I’ve seen so many people come through the doors overwhelmed and almost afraid because they don’t know what to expect,” he says. “They’re used to busy healthcare hallways, and then they come here and see the peaceful spaces, the beautiful family areas, and the patient suites. You can almost see them relax.

Many people had no idea what Hospice was really about until they walked through those doors.”

He’s also experienced Hospice from a deeply

personal perspective.

“One of my longtime volunteer friends suddenly became ill and was admitted here. I was so sad to lose her, but so grateful Hospice was here for her during her final weeks.”

Outside, Richard sees Hospice from another perspective.

“I don’t interact with patients as much because I’m usually working in the gardens,” he says. “But I’ve watched people step outside for a break, walk through the gardens, and you can see them breathe a little easier.”

One afternoon, his volunteer role led to an unexpected reunion.

“I heard someone call my name. It was the family of my best friend from grade school, someone who had moved away, and I hadn’t seen in 20 years. Later that day we spent time together talking like old times.

Before we finished, he said, ‘You inspire me, Rich.’ He told me he was going to start volunteering at his local Hospice in Cambridge.”

For Carol, the kitchen has become much more than a place to prepare meals.

“As soon as I walk through the door, there’s this feeling of joy,” she says. “Whatever’s going on in your own life stays outside. I love meeting families and visitors - we talk about everything.”

She remembers one husband who visited the kitchen each day to choose treats for his wife, who especially loved ice cream.

“We discovered we were both from the same area and became the best buddies. He told me how he met his wife and that they’d been married for 61 years. They had such a beautiful love story.”

It’s moments like these that continue to surprise Carol.

“People sometimes think Hospice is only a sad place, and of

course there are difficult moments,” she says.

“But there’s also so much unexpected joy. Volunteers, staff, physicians we’re all part of one team, supporting families and supporting each other.

There’s so much affirmation and appreciation.”

Betty believes that feeling is what keeps all four of them coming back.

“We all want to help people feel as good as they can and live their

best possible days while they’re here. To meet them where they are. To be part of their journey with them and their families - it’s such a privilege.”

“The Vandervecht family’s story is a wonderful example of the many ways volunteers make a difference at Hospice,” says Katharen Bortolin, Executive Director.

“Every one of our volunteers bring their own gifts, experiences, and

compassion to those we serve. Whether they’re welcoming visitors, preparing meals, tending our gardens, providing support, or in countless other roles, they help create the sense of comfort, dignity, and connection that defines hospice care.

We are incredibly grateful to the Vandervecht family - and to every volunteer who chooses to share their time and heart with our community.”

Seed libraries return to C-K branches The Chatham-Kent Public Library’s Grows Seed Library: Fall Native Plants returns Tuesday, September 8.

Looking back ...

From the Leamington Post August 28, 1958 A special driver training course to be launched as an extra-curricular activity at the Leamington District High School in mid-September was formally approved by the high school board. Principal J.N. Hume said a total of 263 students in grades 10 and 11 were eligible; however, the schedule would permit only 70 boys to register. The board decided that girls could not be included in the driver training program. It was generally agreed that girls did not need such training as badly as boys since they usually turned out to be better drivers.

—— That sunken cable lurking in shallow water off Seacliff Park beach has foiled efforts by a small boat to drag it out to sea where it can’t cause further trouble.

A boat which hooked onto it last week was almost sunk in the attempt because it (the boat) wasn’t heavy enough. The cable will be tackled again the next time a dredge visits the local harbour.

—— Jayda Golden Crescent, owned by John Reynolds of Leamington, took first prize in the two-year-old stallion class judged at the Canadian National Exhibition horse show in Toronto.

—— Efforts to reactivate an airport for Leamington have been making slow headway. Reeve Gordon Manchester said estimates had been obtained on the cost of putting the runway – closed down since last October – back in shape and he would seek advice from the Federal Department of Transport officials.

—— Construction of the new Woolworth store at the corner of Talbot West and Queens again came under scrutiny of town council for the same reason it had in the past: it’s tough for pedestrians to make their way past the project.

Mayor Arthur Cullen said he received complaints from various citizens that building equipment and materials were strewn alongside the building, making it difficult to walk by. There was little space left when cars were parked there. The mayor suggested it might be necessary to ban parking for a while.

—— Wouldn’t you like to know?: How long the beer strike is going to last and if there are any hotels left which still have any (there aren’t any in Leamington).

—— Civil defence training will resume with auxiliary police instruction at the town hall. Meanwhile, Leamington will play host to a special Essex County Civil Defence Day observance, part of a national program to stress the need for defence preparation.

From The Kingsville Reporter August 29, 1957 Principal W.J. Brundage of the Kingsville Public School reports that there are only two changes on his staff for the fall term. Mr. Wm. Crego of Mitchell is replacing Mrs. MacMillan MacLean who will be teaching at Leamington High School and Mrs. Harry Hayes of Oriole Park School near London is replacing Mrs. Robert Bailey.

—— Fire destroyed a barn of Henry Bai-

ley, 3rd Concession, Gosfield South, on Saturday afternoon, causing $3,000 loss.

The Kingsville and Gosfield South Fire Department confined the blaze to one building, the 23-foot by 70-foot barn, and saved a second barn and other outbuildings nearby. Lost along with the barn was a heifer, 30 tons of hay, 5 tons of straw and a milking machine.

—— Crop Bulletin: Another week of bright, clear weather prevailed through most of Southwestern Ontario, the only interruption being a severe thunderstorm with some hail reported in Kingsville and Malden areas with only slight damage. By the middle of the week, all district processors were receiving late tomatoes and by next weekend should be hitting peak production. Field cucumbers are being harvested in good volumes. The peach crop is enjoying a good harvest. Sweet corn harvest is well underway and the quality is reported good.

From The Wheatley Journal Port Sunlight Summer of 1939 Developments are well underway at Port Sunlight with improvements at the lakeshore including building a number of new cottages, groynes or jetties for protecting against shore erosion, and the installation of additional water pipelines for the convenience of residents, also a recreation and amusement centre at the foot of pier road.

In addition, improvements are being made at Lake House: a new restaurant is being built at the western side which will overlook the lake. It will provide accommodations for dining and dancing.

It is also intended to provide amusement for residents and their friends in the form of tennis courts and other games. Lake House will be under the management of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hyatt, who are well known not only in Wheatley and district, but who also have a large following in Windsor and Detroit.

Port Sunlight, which is cooled by Erie breezes, is an ideal summer resort for those who wish to get away from the heat of the cities.

Port Sunlight adjoins the village of Wheatley, population 800, where there are shops, gas stations, restaurants, schools and churches. And it is only 8 miles east of the prosperous town of Leamington, population 5,000, where there are picture theatres, dances, a golf club and other amusements.

Life is easy and pleasant at Port Sunlight. Behind the cottages on the lakeshore are farms. Through several hundred acres of woods, with many varieties of trees, are shady walks. There are city conveniences at Port Sunlight. Roads have been graded, electric powerlines erected with cheap electricity provided from Niagara Falls, and pipelines for the municipal water works system have been laid.

SUN COUNTY TRAVEL SOCCER WIND-UP

Local travel soccer teams gathered from all divisions at the Leamington soccer fields over the weekend to crown champions in each age group. Rain threatened on a couple of occasions but didn’t put a stop to the Sun County teams vying for their titles. In the photo on the left, Leamington (white) took on Tilbury (yellow) in one U11 semi-final match Sunday morning, while in the photo on the right, Wheatley (blue) challenged Essex (red) in the other U11 semi-final game. Tilbury met with Essex in the final and came out on top by a 1-0 score.

Flyers drop two pre-season games as they prepare for 2026-27

By C. Scott Holland What fate awaits the Leamington Flyers in their 2026-27 season remains to be seen, but the foundations for another successful campaign in the Ontario Junior Hockey League were laid shortly after their playoff exit this past spring.

With a high turnover, head coach and GM Dale Mitchell has much to consider in making the final decisions on which players will make the opening Flyers’ roster.

Their second-round playoff ouster, along with eight overage players, left quite a few holes to fill. Coupled with several others who obtained scholarships or positions

with higher level teams, this year’s squad will feature a nucleus of about 10 returning players with rookies initially filling out the roster.

Perhaps the most important off-season move was a trade with the Trenton Golden Hawks bringing goalie Colten Drillen-Roach here.

Drillen-Roach had previously spent time with Collingwood before being shipped to the Hawks. He has a career mark of 39 games played, 33 wins, 5 losses, a 2.02 goals against average, a 92.6 save percentage and five shutouts.

His back-up will be 17-year-old Leamington native Tomas Kniaziew who split last season

between the Powassan Voodoos (NOJHL) and the Essex 73s (PJHL). He was 7-0-1 overall with a GAA of 2.05 and is a grad of Southpoint Minor Hockey.

Familiar names will return as well and include Bryce Belleau, Jak Thiessen, Griffin Grundner, Erik Muxlow, Matthew Crawford, Tyler McGuire, Ethan Tatomir, Joshua Cleary and Brendan Cooke. Thiessen and Cleary are the Flyers’ 20-year-olds, while there are nine players who are 19.

There is plenty of local talent as six players hail from Windsor, Amherstburg, Tecumseh, Leamington and Wheatley.

In the Flyers exhibition opener at Collingwood last Friday night, Drillen-Roach did not fare well against his former team as the Flyers were beaten 5-1. Drillen-Roach lasted 40 minutes, allowing four goals and stopping 17 of 21 shots. Kniaziew replaced him and halted eight-of-nine in the third period.

The Flyers’ lone tally came at 2:19 of the third when Chase Pettipiece hooked up with Reid Ashton who flicked the goal.

Sunday afternoon at Milton, the Flyers injected their lineup with eight players who saw

their first Jr. A exhibition action in Cooper Disher, Xandre Aitken, Gianluca McLure, Kade Grossi, Luke Mailloux, Kayden Cook, Drew Erenc and Cole Darocy.

Despite a tied opening period, the Menace doubled the Flyers 6-3, tabbing two goals per period with Flyers’ starting goalie Tomas Kniaziew allowing four over the first 40 minutes and stopping 22 of 26 shots.

Their home opener will take place in Leamington on Thursday, September 10 versus the Burlington Cougars. Puck drop is 7:10 pm.

The league’s Governor’s Showcase will occur at Niagara Falls’ Gale Centre over three days, October 5-7, and “involve all 24 OJHL teams and expose them to NHL, NCAA, CHL and other professional league scouts from around the world,” said OJ commissioner Marty Savoy.

Hi, I’m Buck! I’m friendly, goofy, enthusiastic, and VERY excited to meet new people. Sometimes I’m so excited that my brain temporarily leaves the building, and I might jump up, get a little mouthy, and forget all about those lovely manners I’ve been learning. Once I’ve had a few minutes to settle down, I can relax and show you what a good boy I really am!

I’m a smart guy, especially when snacks are involved. I’m very food motivated and know some cues already, so continuing my training should be a fun way for us to bond and keep my busy brain occupied. I BUCK do need someone who is prepared to keep working with me, though, because I can be difficult to redirect when I’m really worked up. I also have a tendency to think that toys and treats are pretty valuable treasures, and I may grab them before you have a chance to take them away. My new family will need to be mindful of this and help me learn that sharing and trading are good things.

When it comes to other dogs, I seem to be quite friendly so I may enjoy having some canine friends with the right introductions. I could likely live with older, sturdier children who are comfortable around a big, rambunctious dog, but my enthusiasm and tendency to jump up could easily knock over a younger child. I’ll need plenty of daily exercise, mental stimulation, and continued training to help keep my giant puppy brain out of trouble. If you’re looking for a big, goofy, energetic dog who will keep you laughing and keep you on your toes, I might just be your guy!

The Kingsville Knights U13 girls finished second in the province after earning silver at the 32-team OSSTA Provincial Championships in Forest Glade this past weekend, August 22-23.

The Knights opened the Tier 1 tournament going undefeated in pool play Saturday, beating Waterloo-Garlund 9-8, Oakville Sr. 15-3, and Forest Glade 12-5.

Team MVPs on the first day included Maddie Cardoso, Mia Black, and Jasmine Charissé.

On Sunday, Kingsville faced a second Waterloo team in the quarterfinals, winning 12-7 before beating Whitby 13-2 in the semifinals, earning the right to play in the championship.

In the final game, Kingsville faced a dominant pitcher from Toronto’s Topham Park, holding the Knights to just one run over the first four innings. The Knights

fought back in the final frame, but five runs in the fifth weren’t enough to overtake the tough Toronto team, falling 12-6 in the final.

Maya Carey earned MVP in the final game. After pitching a strong first inning, Carey was hit in the face mask by a line drive early in the second inning, temporarily forcing her out of the game. She returned in the fifth to strike out Topham’s final batter of the game.

The entire championship weekend was highlighted by dominant pitching from Charissé and Carey, along with strong hitting up and down the 12-girl lineup.

The silver medal ends a magical season for the U13 Knights, who earned a berth in Tier 1 of the provincial championships, posting a 27-3 record. It was highlighted by two golds and two silvers in their four tournaments of the season.

Erle “The Putter” Nash continued to play very well. A very determined Tom Hyatt shot a terrific 51 off the silver tees.

OBA tournaments get underway

Lakers, Knights host OBA this weekend Two local centres are hosting Ontario Baseball Association championship tournaments this weekend.

The Leamington Lakers will be among 15 teams vying for the Ontario Baseball Association’s 8U “B” championship at the Kinsmen Ball diamonds.

Diamonds 1, 2 and 3 will be utilized for the tournament with one game set to be played at Mersea Park.

The tournament gets underway on Thursday morning, August 27, with Leamington hosting crosscounty rival Lakeshore at noon

on Diamond 2. The Kingsville Knights will take on Georgina at 5:30 on the same diamond.

Other teams competing this weekend include St. Thomas, Kawartha, Essex, Orillia, Tecumseh, Waterdown, Woodstock, Halton Hills, Chatham, Welland and Stratford.

The double-knockout event will feature a full slate of games all weekend with the finals set for 12:30 pm on Sunday.

Over in Kingsville, the OBA 9U C tournament begins on Friday with Kingsville hosting Tillsonburg at noon.

George, as always, had the carts fine-tuned and ready for action.

Ken Kreuger continued his awesome play as he shot an excellent 36.

Both Joe Drummond and Dutchy produced outstanding 38 results. Jamie Arquette and John Liddell handled the course with their excellent 41 results.

The CP honours on #9 went to Al Matthews as his excellent shot ended up a mere nine feet from the pin set up at the back of the green. Carl Robinson nipped out Pearcie by a foot when he drained his praiseworthy 12-foot LP winning putt.
