By Paul Forman With recent visits by country stars Cole Swindell and Marshall Dane to our area, Kingsville kept the momentum rolling with their Country Night Block Party this past Saturday evening, August 15.

Line dancing tutorials had newbies on the floor, Compass Rose, Messing Around Band and Slim Pickerel gave the couples some live music to dance to, and a petting zoo from Sunny Britches Farm got the kids excited as they made a new friend or two.

Nearly 30 vendors, lining parts of King, Chestnut and Walnut, were on hand for those looking for a unique gift item or something delicious to eat at the August 15 community gathering.

In the top photo, Kingsville Pro Rodeo brought their mechanical bull for daring greenhorns to give it a try at the Kingsville Block Party. Pictured is Rafaela Alvarez with a tight grip on her first ride of the evening.

Mystic Highway rocks Seacliff hill With the threat of storms out over Lake Erie most of the day Saturday, patrons flocking to the Seacliff Park hill must have wondered who’ll stop the rain.

Indeed, it was Mystic Highway and their opening act The Bowler Brothers, who held off the sprinkles as they put on a show-stopping performance for fans on the Sunset Amphitheatre stage.

The night opened with local singer-songwriter Denis Bastarache and his partner Gilles Provost on the harp, performing as the Bowler Brothers. The pair performed mostly originals and mixed in a couple of cover songs to warm up

the crowd.

When Gil Gaidola and his crew hit the stage, they looked ready to take the entire park back to the 1970s — and they did.

From Run Through the Jungle, to Proud Mary and Fortunate Son, they also hit some more recent memories with John Fogerty’s Centerfield and The Old Man Down The Road, playing them exquisitely close to the originals.

The concert, part of the Music On The 42 Summer Concert Series, was hosted jointly by the Municipality of Leamington and The Bank Theatre.

BORDER CITY BARKERS ENTERTAIN

The Border City Barkers were guests of the South Essex Community Council (SECC) and the Leamington Seniors Advisory Committee in a joint effort to bring smiles to the faces of dozens of kids and seniors.

The Barkers make an annual trip to SECC to entertain their Day Camp participants, and this year they included the Seniors Advisory Committee as part of the event, which was held on the grounds of the Meadow Brook Church next to SECC. In the photos above, the crowd watches the show.

Tastes savoured at Mill Street Market

By Paul Forman With busy season upon us at Highbury Canco and a bounty of produce in area fields and orchards, it seemed appropriate that the theme for summer’s third Mill Street Market be Harvest, Place and Taste.

Accompanying the flavours of Leamington was live music from Andrew Taves, Dirt Country and the All Nighters Band, while historian Veronica Brown led her third downtown tour, this time with a focus on the 1960s until present day.

The Mill Street Market is jointly organized and presented by the Leamington Arts Centre, the Municipality of Leamington, the Uptown Leamington Business Improvement Area and The Bank Theatre.

A popular stop for many on the August 14th evening was the LAC portrait corner featuring local artist Todd Stahl.

Different forms of caricature were offered by Stahl and he generously directed all proceeds back to the Leamington Arts Centre for upcoming programming.

Aggie’s Authentic Garlic Sauce provided some Leamington flavour with their various oils and sauces at the Friday night market. Pictured is Jayden Grenier purchasing a jar of garlic sauce from owner Aggie Toole.

A musical look at the upcoming election As the municipal election nomination period comes to a close, I can’t help myself when I’m lookin’ out my back door to see if anyone is putting up signs.

We’re living on the edge of the time when those placards, posters and signs will be here, there and everywhere. Some candidates already have them up, while others have chosen to wait for a bit. The waiting is the hardest part for them, while their opponents get a jump on the sign business.

Regardless, there seems to be a lot of interest in this year’s election with lots of new people ready to jump into the fray of

municipal politics.

While it’s easy to see both sides now, come October we’ll be asked to choose and hope to get it right.

The issues that rise up during these times are certainly something to be addressed and the people will decide with the stroke of a pen whether they want changes or not.

Some will say times they are a changin’, but others are happy together with the current status quo.

It’s almost like we live in two different worlds.

The weight of the world is on the shoulders of those who step up to make the climb into local politics.

They don’t do it for the

money, despite what some may think. They don’t do it for the fame either. They do it for the love of their community and what we all might call “my hometown”.

In the north, signs are already popping up as most of the municipalities up there are small towns and folks are trying to get ahead by a century, so to speak. Life in a northern town is different than what we experience here in the sunny south.

Sometimes, answers come from new people, while sometimes they come from those who already have the experience necessary to provide the answers. Sometimes, the answer is blowin’ in

These cars were built from 1908 to 1940 by Robert Hupp and had a great slogan: “Step Up With Hupp!” If a member of the Sherk family started building cars 100 years ago, they would have been called Sherkmobiles!

Mr. Hupp built his first car in Detroit in 1908, the same year Henry Ford launched his Model T. In 1911, Hupp began building cars in Windsor till 1914. The top, windshield and doors at first cost extra, but were included in the $750 price the following year.

Sing along with Mitch After all the hullabaloo with Bill Haley and his Comets being the first stars on Billboard’s Hot magazine for eight weeks in a row starting on July 9, 1955, it’s no small irony that Mitch Miller’s hit “The Yellow Rose of Texas” became the second number one single of the rock era, as Miller was a frequent critic of rock and roll. At the same time, he was one of the chief architects of pop music.

While he would never claim to have the same kind of influence as Bill Haley or Elvis Presley, in his position as head of artists for Columbia Records, he was responsible for the successful careers of many artists of the day.

In fact, Mitch remained one of the most important behind-the-scenes figures in the music industry until he was put in the public spotlight by the incredible success of “The Yellow Rose of Texas”, which was originally an 1853 marching song written by an anonymous author known only as J.K. My dad had many of these albums (which eventually became mine) and I used to march around the living room whenever he played them. That was a very fond memory of mine.

Waterfront plaza opens with concert

By Mark Ribble Leamington’s Waterfront Market Plaza officially opened on Wednesday, August 12 to the backdrop of storm clouds across the lake, making the evening’s festivities that much more serene.

With a brisk breeze blowing, The Ashley Lynn Experience entertained hundreds who came out for the opening of the amphitheatre and dozens more who just happened along the promenade and stopped for the music.

Ashley Lynn’s exuberant, energetic stage presence and penchant for mingling with the crowd endeared her to many who were seeing the band for the first time.

They ran the gamut of music genres, from The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Proud Mary to modern tunes like Flowers by Miley Cyrus.

Prior to the band taking the stage, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held with councillors Tim Wilkinson, Paul Tiessen and Heather Latam joining mayor Hilda MacDonald for the official snipping of the tape.

The mayor spoke about quality of life and invited all residents and visitors to take advantage of the plaza with one of the most unique backdrops of any along Lake Erie.

The new plaza is a culmination of years of planning that have been a part of the Waterfront Destination Master Plan since its last update in 2022. The plan was intially developed around 1990. The revitalization of the empty lot that sat behind the old Burgess Baits building has come full circle with food trucks, the new Brew On The 42 coffee shop, a new playground and washroom facilities.

Leamington-born artist promoting art departments in hospitals

By Mark Ribble Leamington-born artist Tennille Rose Will has spent the past 20 years of her career in Toronto, where she’s enjoyed much success in her chosen profession.

But it was a 2020 cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment which brought her to the realization that hospitals should have art departments and she’s been busy promoting that idea to the medical community and the public.

“It’s a passion project of mine and an eventual goal to have an art department in every hospital,” she told The Sun last week. “Art is an integral part of healing.”

Tennille’s cancer journey brought her to Princess Margaret Hospital, where she is now the 25th Anniversary Doves for Hope Ambassador.

Throughout her time there, art became her lifeline.

“Painting gave me strength when I was exhausted and a way to express emotions I couldn’t put into words,” she says.

Her initiative has earned her a nomination for the prestigious BlueSky Award as part of the Global Arts Prize for Innovation, an international award that provides funding to innovative arts and humanities initiatives worldwide.

She’s still awaiting word on whether she won the award, but says it’s an

honour to be nominated.

Tennille is also currently the Artist in Residence at Roserock Place in downtown Toronto where she is currently working on a mural designed to highlight cancer patients and their journey.

The Doves of Hope provides a cardboard dove to those who make a donation to cancer care and those doves are coloured in by the donors and dedicated to a loved one, then displayed.

Tennille has incorporated some of those doves into the mural she is doing at Roserock.

She is the daughter of Bob Will and Sharon Will-Headley, who both grew up in Leamington.

Tennille is prominently an oil painter, but loves all aspects of art and believes in her heart that art can change the world.

Her colourful paintings have been sold around the world and are often an array of emotive figures expressed through vivid colour and fluid lines.

OPP BICYCLE PATROL ADDS TWO NEW BICYCLES

The Municipality of Leamington recently purchased two new bicycles for #EssexCtyOPP bicycle patrols. Throughout the warmer months, officers conduct bicycle patrols to engage with residents and visitors while patrolling parks, trails, beaches, neighbourhoods and downtown areas that are often best accessed on two wheels. Bicycle patrol adds another tool to the #EssexCtyOPP’s toolbox, and recent bicycle patrol successes include a traffic stop on a motorcyclist not wearing a helmet which led to four Highway Traffic Act charges and a wanted person was located walking through town, then attempted to escape unsuccessfully from a bicycle patrol officer.

Leamington Chamber of Commerce holds 90th Anniversary BBQ

By Mark Ribble The Leamington District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 90 years this year and an appreciation BBQ and get together for members was held on Thursday, August 13 at the Leamington Municipal Marina.

Chamber President Randy Sleiman welcomed about 144 guests after the BBQ, acting as the emcee for the event.

Chamber Manager Wendy Parsons took the podium and spoke about the chamber’s origins, with a nod to their first president Alf Bennie — whom they honour every year with an award in his name.

Milestones include the first female president in 198687, Sue (Matteis) Scaddan, and their first paid employee, Judith Enns, who was hired in 1985.

“The LDCC has always been about people,” said Parsons. “We’ve come a long way since 1936 and none of that would have happened without the people.”

Parsons and Sleiman were both quick to acknowledge all of those who came before them, including inviting all of the past presidents in attendance up for a photo opportunity.

Chatham-Kent Leamington MP Dave Epp was on hand to present a certificate to the Chamber, and MPP and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Trevor Jones also presented a certificate. Both spoke of the importance of the Chamber of Commerce and small business in this area.

The Chamber currently has 320 members and going strong.

Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald, herself a longtime member of the Chamber, said she had a long, wonderful relationship with the organization.

“You’re willing to work together,” she said. That’s why you’ve sustained this for 90 years. Congratulations.”

After Dennis Voss of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce gave a congratulatory speech, cake and ice cream were served.

Connie’s greatest joys included her beloved grandchildren, the beauty of nature, the comfort and creativity of baking, and the fulfillment she found in a career devoted to caring for others.

Healthy Lunch Ideas Kids Will Actually Eat As families settle back into school routines, one daily challenge quickly returns to the forefront: packing lunches that are both nutritious and likely to come home empty.

Success Starts With Disappointment

by Chani Wiens I think as parents, we’ve all been there. Your child goes to school, excited to try out for the team or student council, ready to write the big test, or present the complicated project.

They’ve worked hard, they really want this, they are maybe a bit nervous… and then they come home and you can tell the instant you see them – they weren’t successful. Your heart sinks. Your protective mode kicks in. And you want to do anything possible to save your child from the disappointment that is written all over their face.

As a mom, I feel this desire to protect my kids from disappointment and failure in my bones.

But as an educator for 17 years, specifically a high school math teacher, I know that letting your child experience failure is not only an extremely important part of building resilience, but one of the most important skills our students are missing.

Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that good parenting means removing obstacles from our children’s paths. We email teachers, negotiate consequences, soften every disappointment, and rush in with solutions before they’ve even had a chance to process what happened. It comes from love. We hate

seeing our kids hurt.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: disappointment is not the opposite of success.

It’s often the path to it.

Every meaningful achievement requires skills that can’t be taught in a textbook. Persistence.

Adaptability. Problem-solving. Confidence.

None of those qualities are built when everything goes according to plan. They’re built in the moments when life doesn’t.

As a math teacher, I see this every day. The students who experience the most growth are rarely the ones who get every answer right on the first try. They’re the ones who get stuck, feel frustrated, ask questions, make mistakes, and keep going. They learn that struggling doesn’t mean they’re bad at math - it means they’re learning. The same principle applies far beyond the classroom.

Research has shown that children who develop resilience are not those who never face hardship, but those who face manageable challenges with supportive adults beside them. Our job isn’t to remove every obstacle. Our job is to remind them, “I know this is hard, and I know you can get through it.”

That doesn’t mean ignoring their feelings. Sit with them. Listen. Validate the disappointment.

It really does hurt not to make the team, get the part, earn the grade, or win the election.

But resist the temptation to immediately fix it. Instead, ask questions like, “What do you think you’ll do differently next time?” or “What did you learn from this experience?” Those conversations help children move from feeling defeated to seeing possibility.

The world our children are growing up in is changing rapidly. Facts are available in seconds.

Artificial intelligence can answer questions and complete tasks that once required hours of work.

School Bus Safety Zone Parents, be sure to review these important bus safety tips with young riders and drivers to keep kids safe this school year.

SAFETY TIPS FOR CHILDREN (and Parents!)

Through our programs like First Ride and Bus Evacuation we help students to understand what they need to do to be safe around school buses.

There are a few simple rules that children should follow when riding a bus.

• Stay seated at all times when on a bus. Do not move around the bus once you have boarded. Find a seat and stay there.

• Do not eat or drink on the bus because of choking hazards and the risk that other students are anaphylactic (allergic).

• Children need to follow a “hands off” policy with other students on the bus.

• Children should not engage in bullying and should report it to the bus patrol or driver if they witness it.

• Please be at your bus stop no less than 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

• Listen to the bus driver and follow their directions.

• Do not attempt to board the bus until it has come to a complete stop.

• Wait for the driver to signal you to cross before you cross the road.

The driver is making certain all traffic is stopping for the bus.

• Remember to stay out of the danger zones around the bus.

• Remember to never go back for something that you have dropped.

MOTORIST RESPONSIBILITIES Help keep our area children safe from unsafe drivers. Motorists must stop when the stop arms/red lights are activated. If you witness a driver who doesn’t stop for a school bus, safely pull over and record everything you can remember about the incident: • Location, date and time • Make, model, colour and license plate • Confirm that the bus was yellow with “school bus” written on both ends • Size of the bus (small or large) • Status of the bus (stopped or moving) • Red flashing lights (on or off) • Children boarding or exiting the bus • Driver passed from the front or from behind the bus Immediately contact police by phone or in person and provide as much information as you can, including the names of any witnesses or photographs. Remember, the penalty for not stopping for a school bus is a fine of up to $2,000 and 6 demerit points.

Supporting Learning at Home As the school year begins, many parents brace themselves for the return of homework, projects, and busy weeknight routines.

While helping children succeed in school is important, supporting learning at home does not have to mean turning the kitchen table into a second classroom.

Research shows that students tend to perform better academically when parents stay involved in their education, with parent engagement linked to improved grades, attendance, and classroom behaviour.

One of the simplest ways to help is by

creating a consistent homework routine.

Setting aside a regular time each day for schoolwork can help children build structure and know what to expect. Having a quiet, distraction-free space to work can also improve focus and encourage productivity.

Parents can further support learning by taking an interest in what their child is studying. Asking about their day, reviewing assignments together, or helping them break bigger projects into smaller steps are a few simple ways to stay involved in your child’s education. Even spending a few minutes discussing what they learned at school can reinforce lessons and show children that education is valued at home.

It can also be helpful to encourage independence rather than immediately stepping in with answers. Guiding children to problem-solve on their own helps build resilience and confidence in their abilities.

Don’t forget that balance matters. After a full day at school, children often need time to recharge before sitting down to complete

homework. Building in breaks and allowing for downtime can help prevent burnout and frustration.

Ultimately, supporting learning at home is less about having all the answers and more about helping children build confidence, independence, and healthy habits that will benefit them well beyond the classroom.

From The Leamington Post August 21, 1974 Mersea Township Council reacted with mixed emotions to a proposal for a bus route between Kingsville and Leamington, specifically designed to provide transportation to new subdivisions that have sprung up south of Highway 18.

—— Ardell McIntyre, deputy-chief of the Mersea police force since July 1, has been named chief starting September 1. He succeeds Chief Reo Williams who has retired.

—— The three-day, all-breed dog show at the Leamington arena over the weekend will attract an estimated 3,000 dogs. The event is sponsored by the Essex County Kennel Club.

—— Tenders have been called for alterations and an addition to the Leamington Library with costs of the project estimated at $250,000. That includes the demolition of the Carnegie structure built in 1912 which was the focus of a proposal to save it from the wreckers last month.

—— A residential development on Oak St. West, just east of Westmoreland, is being considered by the Leamington-Mersea Planning Board. If built it will contain townhouses, semi-detached and an apartment.

—— The annual harvest of tomatoes for the largest processor, Heinz, got underway last Wednesday in the Sun Parlor. This year over 7,000 acres have been contracted by the company.

—— A girl from Beaverton, Ontario, on the east side of Lake Simcoe, has reported finding one of Leamington’s centennial helium-filled balloons that were released July 7-14. The youngster said the balloon was actually found in a park in northern Ontario.

From The Kingsville Reporter August 22, 1974 The Historic Vehicle Society of Ontario has purchased land for the purpose of erecting a village on the Arner Townline just north of the Third Concession.

Chairman of the proposed Pioneer Village, Alex Horen, said that considerable money has already been spent on the project and it will probably cost up to $500,000 before it is completed.

—— The Gosfield South Council will further discuss approval of the controversial trailer park proposed for the Cedar

Beach area. The area is noted for several unique species of wildlife and vegetation, especially as a home for the bald eagles and ospreys. Residents nearby are also concerned about increased traffic in the area, including heavy boat traffic on the creek if the travel park is built.

—— August 21 noon, Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame visited Kingsville at Scott’s Chicken Villa and presented a cheque of $200 to the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts of Kingsville. On August 23, the colonel opens the 100th Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in Canada in Toronto.

—— Ontario Provincial Police personnel have been instructed to use seat belts while driving on duty. Officers are asked to use their own discretion regarding seat belt use in situations where a prisoner is being transported or when approaching the scene of known or suspected danger.

—— Air Lift to Vietnam, sponsored by Interdopt, a group of Essex County parents, need good used clothing, toys and baby supplies. Please call if you have anything to contribute.

From The Wheatley Journal August 1924 It is remarkable the number of persons who will risk a fifty dollar fine for the sake of saving two cents war tax on a cheque. Of course it is not always possible to have revenue stamps in your pocket, but it is always possible, in the event of not having any stamps at hand, to add two cents to the cheque. The bank will always have revenue stamps on hand and will accommodate you if the two cents is added to the cheque. Taking a risk of fifty dollars to save two cents is not good business.

—— A deputation of citizens was present asking for stricter law enforcement in the village, especially in respect to the use of bicycles on sidewalks, autos stopping at street intersections, children running the streets at night, unnecessary noises on the streets at night, and Sunday closing of stores, on which subjects several prominent citizens addressed the town council. Their views were promised consideration.

Arts Centre reception recognizes en plein air artists The Leamington Arts Centre announced the winners of its 2026 Leamington En Plein Air Painting Competition at an Evening at the LAC event held July 31.

There were 46 submissions this year from 22 artists across various towns and cities in the region.

In first place was “Shade” by Astra Nams. Second place went to “1200 Mersea Rd. B” by Roger Boyle, and in third place was “Guilded Tapestry” by Elaine Guitar. “The Point” by Theresa Nester received honourable mention.

Prizes awarded were $500, $300, $200 respectively, along with certificates, and a certificate for honourable mention as well.

This year’s juror was Elizabeth MacDonald.

The contest was sponsored by the Leamington Lions Club.

Teaze will headline Music OnThe42 Saturday

The Saturday, August 22 Music Onthe42 Summer Concert will showcase opening act Christian Vegh at 5 p.m., followed by featured performers Rick LaBonte & The Band of Brothers at 6:30 and headliner Teaze at 8:30.

OPP reminder of E-bike rules and regulations

As the use of e-bikes continues to grow across communities in Essex County, it is important to recognize that e-bikes — also known as power-assisted bicycles — are subject to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and Ontario Regulation 369/09, according to a report issued by the OPP. Electric-powered motorcycles and dirt bikes are treated the same as their gas-powered counterparts under Ontario law. They are considered motor vehicles and must comply with the requirements of

the Highway Traffic Act, Off-Road Vehicles Act, and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, including licensing, registration, permit, and insurance requirements, where applicable.

Parents, guardians and youth are reminded that individuals under 16 years of age are prohibited from operating powered or power-assisted bicycles, motorcycles, dirt bikes or e-bikes on streets, roadways, sidewalks or the town’s trail system.

• Have the battery and motor securely fastened to the frame.

• Meet all Ontario equipment standards.

E-bike riders must also: be at least 16 years of age; wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet; follow the same rules of the road as cyclists; and refrain from riding on controlled-access highways.

Unlike motor vehicles, e-bike operators are not required to have a driver’s licence, vehicle registration, licence plates or insurance.

Maya Carey no-hitter propels U13 Knights to fastpitch gold A complete-game no-hitter by Maya Carey highlighted the Kingsville Knights U13 girls fastpitch gold-medal performance this past weekend in Oakville.

The Knights opened the tournament with a 20-0 win over Nipissing, with Carey striking out 11 over four innings. Kingsville followed with a 14-2 win over Richmond Hill and a 14-0 shutout of Oakville to earn the number one seed and the gold medal in a tournament shortened by rain. Jasmine Charissé and Allyssa Herrera also pitched for Kingsville, neither allowing a single run during their outings.

Knights, who outscored their opponents 48-2 over three games. Ella Fleming, Maddie Cardoso, Izzy Iat-

Bill Ward shoots 37 to lead Talbot Trail Seniors

By Bob McLean On August 11, 52 members of the Talbot Trail senior men’s league enjoyed a beautiful day for their golf.

Phil, the manager, encouraged the seniors to participate in the Jack Stein Memorial Tournament.

John “Fuzzy” Blood hit a terrific CP winning shot to within 12 feet of the #9 pin. Jim Pearson drained an awesome 30-foot putt to earn the LP victory.

Bill Ward’s outstanding golfing skills earned him an excellent 37. Ken Kreuger placed second with his dazzling 38. In third place with sweet 39s were John Liddell and Jamie Arquette. Forty of the league’s players will do a golf excursion to Tilbury on August 24. On September 14 they will travel to Willow Ridge for the final excursion. The next scramble is on Tuesday, August 25, and the windup scramble will take place in early October.

10th annual Bounty of the County tournament raises funds for hungry July 16 will be remembered by many as the day of the wildfire smoke in Essex County. It was also the day for the 10th annual Bounty of the County Golf Tournament, held at Orchard View Golf Course. Each year this tournament has raised funds to support the food banks in the area.

A field of 112 women were set to play 18 holes

and then celebrate with lunch, prizes, raffles and fun.

The golf could not happen due to the smoke, but the ladies all arrived for lunch at 12 noon.

A delicious meal was catered by the Car Barn and Sherry Fleming, raffle prizes were awarded and a couple of special draws took place. The fun and fellowship were contagious and laughter

filled the clubhouse.

This was the 10th and final golf tournament from the Bounty of the County organizing committee. This year $18,420 was raised, bringing the total for 10 years to $69,420. Both Meaghan Bolton from Kingsville Family Food Bank and Joel Epp from the Southwestern Ontario Glean-

ers were present this year and gave a heartfelt thank you to all those who have made such a difference to their respective organizations.

The success of this tournament over the last 10 years is entirely accredited to the wonderful hole sponsors, some of whom have supported the tourna-

ment for the entire last 10 years; the raffle prizes donors – every year bigger and better; and of course all the wonderful women who come out each year to support the food banks and the families who are experiencing food insecurity in the community.

Although the day started out as a challenge, it finished as it always has – with fun, fellowship and the ability to help the community in a special way.
