We will be holding another blood drive on December 20th. We are looking for team leaders to sign up from companies in and around Southpointe. Southpointe Chamber Members Save 84 lives through Blood Donations Written by Brad Herman Director of Communication, Southpointe Chamber

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, and it's estimated that 4.8 million Americans would die each year without a blood transfusion. Almost 25% of the population will require a life-saving transfusion at some point throughout their lives. It's evident that blood donations are constantly in high demand, so the Southpointe Chamber was happy to help the cause when we were approached by the American Red Cross to sponsor a blood drive.

According to the American Red Cross the two most common reasons people give for not donating are: "Never thought about it" and "I don't like needles." They also state that "although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10% of that eligible population actually do each year. This drive was my first donation experience and I can reassure you that it was entirely painless for me.

the Donation Process The American Red Cross breaks the donation up into a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation, and refreshments. This system is designed to make sure that the donation process is safe for the donor as well as for the future recipients of transfusions.

Upon arriving, you will be greeted at the registration desk. After checking in, a Red Cross staff member will go through your medical history with you and give you a brief mini-physical to determine if you are eligible to donate. Any information you give during the process will remain confidential. The physical consists of temperature, iron levels in your blood, and blood pressure.

Donors may save time by completing a Rapid Pass the day of their donation, prior to arriving.

Next, you will move on to the actual blood donation which takes approximately 10-12 minutes. Donations are performed by registered nurses and done with sterile needles that are safely disposed of after. An average adult has roughly 10 pints of blood in their body and will give approximately 1 pint during the donation. It only takes about 24 hours for your body to replace the plasma from your donation while red blood cells will replenish in about four to six weeks. Once the donation is completed you are given light refreshments and are free to leave after approximately 10-15 minutes.

Your donation will then be tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and other infectious diseases before it is released to hospitals. You will be eligible to donate again after a waiting period of 56 days.

How you can help Donate Blood! Approximately 50% of the Red Cross blood supply comes from loyal recurring donors. The Southpointe Chamber will be tentatively holding another blood drive on December 20th at the Iceoplex but if you visit www.redcrossblood.org you can find when all of the blood drives are happening near you.

There are also other way to help. For the chamber blood drive, and all others, the Red Cross asks for volunteers to help out on the day of the event. Volunteers will assist in checking in donors as well as distributing refreshments. We are also looking for interested participants to act as a "team captain" within their organization

Optimized Emergency Services at Canonsburg Hospital Lead to Shorter Waits, Happier Patients At every emergency department (ED), patients want to be treated quickly and get the best care possible. Canonsburg Hospital, part of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), is always reviewing procedures and making changes with the goal of faster, more efficient patient service.

After a recent review of ED procedures, Canonsburg medical staff made several changes. The first major change was to view the entire hospital as an integrated health care team, rather than individual departments, with the goal of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients as quickly as possible.

The addition of a paramedic to triage patients in the ED and having an experienced tech greet patients, take vital signs, record the chief medical complaint, and place the patient in a treatment room made a big impact: 99 percent of patients who arrive for care don’t have to wait for triage and current door-to-doctor time is 20 minutes.

In an effort to help soothe Canonsburg Hospital’s youngest ED visitors, the Greater Canonsburg Lions Club supplies comfort bags filled with a blanket, books, crayons, coloring books, a stuffed toy, and educational materials for children ages 1 to 6. The “Liam’s Crew” comfort bag project was spearheaded by Lion’s Club chaplain and assistant supervisor for security at Canonsburg Hospital Michael Kazmarski in memory of his son, Liam Michael Kazmarski, who died July 31, 2015, at age 3 while undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Will you help our region’s veterans? The Veterans’ Administration estimates that 22 veterans commit suicide every day. These military men and women have faithfully served our country, only to return home with visible and invisible disabilities that effect their quality of life. In order to accomplish the goal of reducing Western Pennsylvania veteran suicides, Life Changing Service Dogs for Veterans is partnering with PNC Bank to hold The 1st Annual Mutt Strut. This event is a 4-hour community-‐wide event focused on raising awareness and funding to sponsor these life‐-changing dogs. Funds raised by this event will go directly to Life Changing Service Dogs for Veterans (the Pittsburgh subsidiary for Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Inc. (a 501(c)3 non‐profit organization) for the sponsorship, training and placement of service dogs to veterans in our region.

What is the Mutt Strut? The Mutt Strut

will consist of a large dog parade, divided into three categories (small, medium and large breed). Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category. Every registrant will receive a doggy‐bag containing pet-related items donated by sponsors and vendors, along with the “Doggy Deal” coupon book full of savings on pet-related products and services. The event will also host dog‐-related vendors. Registration is $22/dog – with discounts for multi‐dog registrants. The power of service dogs “Just wanted to share a great story of the amazing power of service dogs.

This morning Ollie and I were out shopping for some groceries, and Ollie kept bugging me about this guy we kept running into. Now normally I try to keep to myself in public, but Ollie just would not let me ignore this man. As some of you know, certain Service Dogs are trained to detect episodes of distress in many different ways. So to comfort Ollie in his eagerness to investigate the man, we approached him to speak to him for a moment (again something that I wouldn’t usually do).
