Specialized heart care, close to home

J. Travis Wilson, MD, and others provide exceptional cardiac care at AHN’s Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion When Washington, Pa., resident Jimalea Haines was having difficulty walking and experiencing partial numbness in her leg, she knew something was wrong. A nurse for 39 years, Jimela went to her primary care doctor, who promptly referred her to Allegheny Health Network’s Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion for cardiovascular testing.

55,000-square-foot facility are three interventional cardiologists who conduct complete medical evaluations of patients and address cardiac issues. “Patients want to receive the best health care, but don’t want to travel far or make it inconvenient to their lives,” said Dr. Wilson. “Our goal is to offer complete heart care in an outpatient setting.”

Interventional cardiologist J. Travis Wilson, MD, was able to see her that same day and Jimalea was pleasantly surprised to learn there was a specialized care center right near her home.

The interventional cardiologists at AHN’s Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion specialize in cardiac catheterization, peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery disease, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology. Patients can receive stress testing, echocardiograms, and Holter monitoring. Additional specialists in heart failure, pulmonary vascular disease, electrophysiology, and cardiac and vascular surgery are also available to see patients who require subspecialty care.

“Dr. Wilson saw me the same day that my primary care doctor called AHN’s Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion,” said Jimalea. “They were so quick with getting me into the office and determining what was wrong.”

CONFLUENCE Financial Partners recently expanded its offices to include a Southpointe location at 1000 Noble Energy Drive, Suite 240, Canonsburg, PA 15317. “This is a great compliment to our downtown office to better serve our clients in the South Hills of Pittsburgh”, says Greg Weimer, Partner and Wealth Manager, RJFS. “With the expansion of this area and changing client needs, this location is perfect as we continue to help clients meet their financial goals,” said Weimer. The office is located very near the new Town Center area of Southpointe with easy access to the I-79 corridor and provides flexibility for client meetings. This second office location offers an option for clients who may live in the South Hills and prefer not to commute to the downtown location to meet with advisors. www.confluenceFP.com 412-391-0377.

Shen Yun Reviving 5,000 years of civilization All new 2016 show with live orchestra Why would someone who is not Chinese go see a Chinese show? Maybe because it is so mesmerizing that it transcends nationalities, so beautiful that it speaks a universal language, and so inspiring that it touches upon something shared by all cultures. Today, Shen Yun Performing Arts provides just such an experience, and the company is bringing its unique production to the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, May 10~11, 2016. With breathtaking dance numbers, gorgeous costumes, a special orchestra, world-class vocalists, and dynamic backdrops, Shen Yun resonates themes of courage, hope, and triumph of good over evil. How do people feel after watching the show? “Tranquility, peace, and harmonious synchronization,” said one spectator after watching Shen Yun in Argentina. “Absolutely spectacular,” said Joyce Brooks, editor-in-chief of Black Tie Magazine, “An uplifting experience that doesn’t have to deal with words.”

ly. “These beautiful, gifted people are expressing something that’s both pure and good.” It is this spirit of purity and goodness that Shen Yun carries to hundreds of thousands of audience members each year, performing in cities like Paris, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Sydney and, of course, New York. Expression Through Dance At the core of Shen Yun choreography is classical Chinese dance. This is a richly expressive art form passed down and refined in imperial courts throughout many dynasties. Today it has evolved into one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. Along with unique movements and poses, classical Chinese dance includes an array of dynamic techniques—difficult jumps, spins, flips, and aerials that enhance a dancer’s powers of expression, while heightening the performance’s athleticism and energy.

“It has passion, but yet it’s calm and beautiful,” said Vanessa Harwood, former principal dancer of Universality National Ballet of Canada, “It’s not just pretty, it’s Shen Yun derives its conserious pretty—there’s a tent from ancient Chinese lot of depth to it, and a lot culture, but somehow this of meaning.” The perforseems like a culture that is mance “speaks not only to so fundamentally human, my intellect, but it speaks audiences of all backto my heart,” said Omega grounds easily connect with Medina, former senior it. The performance inmanager of Classical cludes a series of short, energetic dances depicting Chinese legends and traditions, Awards for the GRAMMY Awards. “It was a complete including the connection between heaven and earth. The edifying experience of the human spirit.” music and dance expressively tell the stories and two New Season narrators fill in any cultural gaps with brief introductions. Shen Yun is now touring the globe with a brand new “A wonderfully positive karma,” said Philadelphia Week- production. It brings an all-new show to the Benedum Center, May 10-11. 20

New technology, techniques and infrastructure help Marcellus operators keep producing through the downturn A drilling rig maintained by Deep Well Services, one of several shale gas operators finding more efficient means of well completion. Photo courtesy of Deep Well Services.

In February, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its latest oil and gas industry report, which showed the total number of oil rigs has fallen from a high of 1,309 in October 2014 to 475 in December 2015, a decrease of 64 percent. Despite the dramatic drop, U.S. crude oil production during those months declined by only 8 percent from its peak in March 2015. In the Marcellus region, new gas well starts in 2015 dropped 61 percent compared to their peak in 2011, and well starts last year declined 43 percent compared to 2014. According to MarcellusGas.org, which closely tracks data related to Marcellus gas wells, the rates of decline for well starts in the top five producing counties have fallen sharply from their peaks: 90 percent and 72 percent declines for Bradford and Lycoming counties, respectively, which both peaked in 2011, and 60 percent, 35 percent and 30 percent declines for Greene, Susquehanna and Washington counties, respectively, which all peaked in 2014.

By R. Brock Pronko Regional Business Analyst Marcellus Business Central per rig is expected to increase from Feb. to March by 238,000 cubic feet per day. How could drilling rigs and new well starts decline dramatically while oil production falls off only modestly and new well Marcellus gas production continues to climb? “The increasing prevalence of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, along with improvements in well completions, and the ability to drill longer laterals has greatly improved productivity by making wells more efficient,” said Katie Teller, operations research analyst for the U.S. Department of Energy. “Also, in the last several months of 2015, new pipeline infrastructure came online in the Marcellus, and a lot of gas wells that had already been drilled but that weren’t fracked and completed came online since operators could now get the gas to market. “That’s why new well production is up while new well starts are down because technically, those uncapped wells weren’t new well starts but wells that had already been drilled.”

Marcellus gas production might have risen even higher, said Teller, if the Northeast had another Given the decline in well starts and the steep colder than average winter like the past two drop in natural gas prices, one would expect a winters, but the milder winter kept prices down fall-off in Marcellus gas production; however, because of lower demand, which became a according to EIA, not only are Marcellus opera- disincentive for unplugging more drilled wells. tors leading the nation in natural gas production by a wide margin, but new well gas production Among the well service companies that have 24

“Following the frac is when we do most of our work, and that’s the final drill out, and we see a lot of operators switching from coil tubing to our style of completion, “Because operators are getting about 30 percent less for which uses a snubbing unit and a service rig,” said John natural gas than they had been before the glut, they’ve Sabo, Sr., chief operating officer of Deep Well Services. been asking for price decreases from service companies like ours, and we’ve had to cut our prices so we could “We recently had a customer put a presentation together keep our people working, so everybody is in survival on how they cut 60 percent off their completion cost mode right now. by switching from coil tubing to snubbing, so not only is snubbing more efficient, it’s less costly in most situa“When the prices of oil and gas pick up again, which tions.” could take years, all those innovations including ours will finally pay off.” . Longer lateral wells have also increased the efficiency of production. “Three years ago, gas operators were drilling four or five thousand foot laterals, the horizontal portion of the well where the bores are made in the shale, but now they’re able to drill six, seven or even ten thousand foot laterals, which is more efficient because it penetrates Office space sub-lease in Southpointe. “Longer laterals enable operators to drill fewer wells to get the same production as they did three years ago, which also saves costs, and with the price of hydrocarbons so low, operators are looking at every efficiency they can employ.” Another efficiency being adopted by drillers is to use geologic data for bore holes. “Instead of spacing the bores every hundred and fifty feet throughout the five or ten thousand feet of lateral well, operators are looking at the geological data to find the optimal locations along the well to place the bores and maximize gas production,” said McCallister. Operators have also been increasing in the amount of sand used to prop open the small cracks created when the chemical-laced water fractures the shale rock. According to the EIA, increasing the amount of sand appears to boost the initial production rates, although it also creates a faster decline in later production. “In part, because of these improvements that have al-

World-Class Gas With some 1,200 Tcf of recoverable resources, the world’s largest natural gas play spanning the Marcellus and Utica shales, accounts for 25% of Lower 48 gas production in the U.S. The region’s biggest midstream operators are bulking up to export gas out of the region. Yet even the prolific ‘Beast in the East’ isn’t immune to the downturn in commodity prices. With rig counts slashed in half, Appalachia’s producers are taking drastic measures to cut costs and lower breakevens. Find out what’s working, what’s not and what’s next for producers and midstream operators in the East. Plan now to join 2,500 industry professionals, 20+ executive-level speakers and 250+ exhibiting companies in Pittsburgh for an in-depth look at the state of the region.

Montour Trail Southpointe Connector Project Update

The trail surface will be paved with a crushed stone base and 2” of bituminous material.

Over the past few years as the Southpointe Business Park became a national and international hub, especially for energy related companies, a local Cecil Township Supervisor, Frank Ludwin, had his own vision for the Park. That vision was to connect Southpointe with the Montour Trail as a recreational facility that would hopefully bring together Cecil Township residents and the employees who would one day live and work in the Park.

Cecil Township Klinger Park Project. As the lone visionary supervisor, he donated the use of his own earth moving equipment to begin the task. Today, the project has evolved into a joint effort among the Cecil Township Supervisors who own the property; the Marcellus Shale Southpointe Chamber of Commerce who see the economic value for the project; and the Montour Trail Council who plan to maintain the Trail once construction has been completed.

Although Frank passed away late in 2014, his vision has evolved into the Southpointe Connector Trail Project designed to connect Southpointe to the Montour Trail as part of the

At the present time, Gateway Engineering has completed the bid ready trail design at the request of the Cecil Township Supervisors, and projected the cost for the 1.15

mile Trail at $361,875. As part of the design, Gateway divided the Trail into three sections that include: Montour Trail to Reserve Drive, Reserve Drive to Klinger Road and Klinger Road to Corporate Drive. In summary, Frank Ludwin’s vision to connect the Montour Trail to Southpointe via Klinger Park has now become the dream of the Cecil Township Supervisors, Montour Trail Council volunteers and the Marcellus Shale Southpointe Chamber of Commerce members. As a way to raise the estimated $361,875 construction costs, these three organizations are requesting donations that may include naming rights, direct donations and/or honorariums. As part of that process, a plaque will be erected in Klinger Park that is designed to name every individuals and/or corporation willing to help fund this project. If there is an interest, please contact Dale Risker, President, of the Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce at dale_risker@yahoo.com or (724) 350-5562 for more information.
