CREATING CHANGE AGENTS FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Southpaw partners with therapists and specialists nationwide to empower individuals with sensory processing challenges, helping them enhance their ability to adapt, integrate and thrive in their daily lives. Beyond being part of the worlds of sensory integration and multi-sensory environments today, we’re also invested in the next generation of occupational therapists. So is Jennifer Dessoye. As the Associate Clinical Professor and Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at King’s College in Wilkes Barre, PA, she leverages two decades of pediatric occupational therapy experience to teach the occupational therapists of tomorrow.

When Jennifer embarked on developing the school’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) degree program, her goal was clear: Make it the pinnacle of excellence in the country. “While many schools have similar National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) requirements, I wanted our program to give our students more. I wanted it to be one of the best in the country,” said Jennifer. “To do that, we must teach our students to not rely on the same techniques, but to innovate. They will enter a volatile health system, so we need them to become change agents. Not just for the OT profession, but for all health care.” At King’s College, students are immersed in a handson education that delves deep into neurology, anatomy and physiology, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the sensory system.

The school’s 60,000-square-foot building, equipped with a human cadaver lab and innovation lab, is the perfect backdrop for this practical learning. King’s College’s unique Leadership and Mentoring Program is a game-changer for students. It introduces them to top clinicians, leaders and businesses, broadening their horizons and offering them unique mentorship opportunities. As the King’s OT faculty worked to create the new pediatrics lab and sensory rooms, Jennifer turned to Southpaw, saying, “They were extremely helpful in our decisions about what equipment we needed for motor, sensory and safety needs. According to a 2023 Expedia survey, air travel has emerged as a primary source of stress for 55% of Americans. The stress of flying is ranked as more troubling than other commonly dreaded activities, such as preparing taxes or undergoing dental treatments. This reality is particularly pronounced for passengers with sensory processing challenges or neurodivergent disorders and those who simply need a calm and therapeutic space inside a busy airport.

Navigating an airport and boarding a plane can be particularly daunting for travelers overwhelmed by bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, various textures and the anxiety of confined spaces. Recognizing the need for a more accommodating travel environment, Houston Airport is taking significant steps to address these challenges by opening sensory rooms at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). To bring them to life, the airport system turned to the experts at Southpaw. The first of two sensory rooms opened in IAH Terminal A in November 2023. Eleven months later, in October 2024, the second dedicated space opened near Gate D5 in the newly expanded IAH Terminal D. IAH Terminal D primarily serves international travelers, and in November 2024, approximately 500,000 passengers arrived, departed or connected through the terminal.

The new sensory room was a labor of love for Ace Garcia, airport operations supervisor for Houston Airport. “Designing the sensory room was more than a job—it was personal,” said Garcia. “Both my daughter and son are neurodivergent, so I understand firsthand the difference a space like this can make for families. I wanted this room to be a place where they, and others like them, could feel seen, safe and supported.” Inside each sensory room, travelers are provided a welcome escape from the typically chaotic airport atmosphere filled with loud announcements and bustling crowds. The sensory room offers a soothing environment where passengers can unwind, deregulate and prepare their minds for the journey ahead or recuperate from the stresses of their recent travels. Garcia and Houston Airport collaborated closely with Southpaw to ensure this amenity met the standards passengers expect of IAH, a 4-Star Skytrax airport. Southpaw’s role in the project started before construction as we thoughtfully designed the sensory space, ensuring it was tailored to meet travelers’ unique needs.

The room boasts several specialized features to promote relaxation and engagement. Among these are a pair of customized 72" Relaxation Bubble Tubes that create calming visual effects, a Star Gazer that projects a soothing night sky, a Vibro-Acoustic Mat under a Fiber Optic Tunnel that provides gentle, soothing vibrations, and multiple mirrors that enhance the sensory experience. Each element was carefully chosen to create a safe haven amid the airport’s often overwhelming environment. Garcia took on the project with a meticulous approach. “One of the biggest things we focused on was maximizing the small space and making sure travelers could choose what worked for them,” he explained. “That’s why we installed switches that control the lights, sound and vibrations—so each person can customize their experience. Too much stimulation can be overwhelming for some, so giving them that control was essential.” Some travelers become so relaxed within this tranquil space they find it challenging to leave the room when their flights are announced. This is a testament to the room’s effectiveness in providing a much-needed respite from air travel. This application of Southpaw’s equipment reaffirms our commitment to serving those with sensory processing challenges wherever they might be, not only in the clinical or rehabilitation space. We hope that more airports adopt these sensory rooms, which benefit all travelers.

Since 1956, United Rehabilitation Services of Greater Dayton (URS) has strived to enhance the physical, social and emotional needs of children, adults and seniors with developmental or acquired disabilities. They’ve established a continuum of care with full-day structured programs that offer goal-centered activities with a person-centered approach. When they began working on expanding their sensory gyms and adding a sensory room, they called on Southpaw. What is a multi-sensory environment? It’s a space that can aid in development and therapy, relax anxious people, and stimulate reactions. These rooms have no age or ability restrictions; truly, they can help anyone. Physical therapists Stephanie French, PT, DPT, and Mariah Cox, PT, DPT, helped guide the creation of these rooms for URS. How has Southpaw helped them to work with their clients? They replied, “Our Southpaw equipment is what you dream of having in your outpatient settings, and it’s nice that we have access to so much of it here.” The sensory room has just started to be used by clients, but the potential already has these therapists excited. Mariah remarked, “I’m taking many of my clients in there. They tend to be overwhelmed by the extra stimulus, like in a classroom setting. Or if they need to be regulated, I’ll take them there. The bubble tube, in particular, is one of their favorite things. It gives them something to visually focus on that is very calming. On the reverse side, for some of the other clients, we turn the music up and add vibration, waking their bodies up. It’s very flexible, as we can use it to calm them down or increase stimulus. I have already utilized the sensory room for multiple clients, specifically clients that tend to be overwhelmed by classroom stimuli. The sensory room is great for sensory regulation, with the bubble tower providing a calming visual stimulus that is a favorite among the clients. For clients that need external stimulation to help wake their bodies up, we can utilize the Stereo Rover and Vibro-Acoustic Platform for additional input. The versatility of the sensory room is one of its greatest draws.” The versatile Southpaw Obie Pro is a central feature in these spaces, enabling multiple therapists to collaborate with their clients in a single session and involving them in games that teach communication skills and social skills. One of Mariah’s clients, who previously struggled with regulation, experienced a significant improvement in their overall sense of calm after just a few sessions in the new sensory room, which features Southpaw products such as a 72" Bubble Tube, Star Gazer and Stereo Rover. “Now that we’re not spending as much time regulating, we can actually implement the exercises and activities that will benefit them,” shared Mariah. It allows them to test multiple forms of stimulus—vibration, auditory and visual— while testing reaction times in a variety of settings. “We can test her reaction time, and we’ve never been able to do that before,” remarked Stephanie. Multiple groups of younger clients, who often have high sensory needs, are also working out in the sensory gym. Stephanie shared, “The beauty of the Southpaw devices is that we can have so many different types of patients in the room at the same time.
