Greg Nesbitt has been confirmed as the Progressive Conservative party’s candidate for the Riding Mountain constituency in the next Manitoba provincial election.

Nesbitt, who has represented the Riding Mountain constituency as the MLA since 2016, said he is honoured to once again carry the

Progressive Conservative banner and continue advocating for rural communities across western Manitoba.

“It’s a privilege to speak for the people of Riding Mountain,” Nesbitt said. “Our communities are built on strong families, farms, and small businesses, and I want to keep working to ensure their

voices are heard in the Legislature.”

Before entering politics, Nesbitt spent more than four decades as a newspaper publisher and business owner in the Shoal Lake and Russell area. He has also been active in community organizations, including the Manitoba and Canadian Community Newspapers As-

sociation, and the Shoal Lake Regional Airport Authority.

During his time in government, Nesbitt served as the Minister of Natural Resources and Northern Development from 2022 to 2023 and as the Chair of the PC Caucus under three Premiers.

He currently serves as the Progressive Conservative critic for

Environment and Climate Change.

Party members recognized Nesbitt’s experience and strong connection to rural Manitoba, noting his involvement in community initiatives, volunteer firefighting, and minor hockey coaching and refereeing.

H e rita ge Co -o p e xp a n ds e le ctio n s vo tin g o n lin e Heritage Co-op is taking what they believe is a major step toward strengthening member engagement and expanding democratic participation, offering secure online voting for the 2026 Director Elections for the first time in its history.

Heritage Co-op says the change reflects member feedback received in recent years. In 2024, Heritage updated its bylaws to introduce advance and online voting opportunities, providing members with greater flexibility and accessibility.

Heritage Co-op CEO Leanne DeVliegere welcomed this step forward.

“Moving to online Director Elections allows us to better support our members with a modern, convenient way to participate,” DeVliegere said. “This step is about meeting our members where they are and making it easier than ever for them to take part in shaping the future of their Co-op.”

From March 16–27, members will be able to vote online using a secure, en-

crypted digital platform managed by a trusted local service provider. The system ensures voter anonymity while making the election process more accessible for Heritage Co-op’s more than 36,000 members. In addition to voting from any personal device, members can cast ballots in person at designated Heritage Co-op locations using Co-op-provided devices.

In-person voting opportunities include: March 23 in Rivers, March 24 in Sandy Lake and Erickson, March 27 in Strathclair, and from March 16-27 at the Minnedosa Administration Office.

Heritage Co-op’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on April 29 at the Minnedosa Community Conference Centre, with a satellite location at the Brandon Agro site. Election results will be announced at the AGM alongside the annual financial review and the introduction of the 2026 Community Development Fund recipients.

A snow packed, carved trail within a ditch running parallel to Highway 10 in the Onanole area welcomed a number of snowmobile enthusiasts over the weekend of March 7, thanks to an undeniable break from the cold northwest winds. The next day, however, a mix of snow, ice pellets, and strong winds once again created havoc on area highways and roads, as motorists had difficulty to stay out of the ditch due to extreme icy conditions.

For the past year, across community halls, Legions, and local centres in the Riding Mountain constituency, a familiar excitement has marked the beginning of some very special evenings.

“On May 6 of 2023, Canadians celebrated the Coronation of His Majesty, King Charles the Third,” Member of Parliament Dan Mazier would begin, addressing a room full of neighbours and friends. “This is the first coronation for a sovereign of Canada in over 70 years... the King Charles the Third Coronation Medal was created to recognize Canadians for their contributions.”

With the final medals now officially presented, Mazier has concluded a marathon of recognition, honouring 24 individuals across the riding – 12 of whom reside in the immediate local region. These awards represent a “thank you” from

the Crown and the country for lifetimes of quiet, often behind-the-scenes dedication.

What is the Coronation Medal? The King Charles III Coronation Medal is a prestigious Canadian honour established to mark the accession of His Majesty to the Throne. Unlike many military honours, this medal focuses heavily on community impact. It was designed to highlight those who have made significant contributions to their provinces, territories, and towns.

For Dan Mazier, the shadow minister for Health and the MP for Riding Mountain, the task of selecting a limited number of recipients was a daunting one.

“The response was overwhelming,” Mazier noted during his ceremonies. “Last year, I invited constituents to nominate individuals who have dedicated their lives to strengthening our region.”

The recipients from our region represent a “Who’s Who”

of local resilience. From educators and veterans to business owners and historians, the 12 local honourees share a common thread… they showed up when their communities needed them most.

CH AM PIO N S O F Y O U T H AN D SPO R T Several medals recognized those who have spent decades shaping the next generation.

Audrey Fortune of Strathclair has been a 40-year cornerstone of the 317 Royal Canadian Air Cadets, mentoring countless young leaders through nearly every command role. In Minnedosa, Tanis Barrett acted as the driving force behind the “Skate the Lake” Pond Hockey Tournament, which has raised nearly $200,000 for local projects. Vicki Smith of Hamiota, a teacher and viceprincipal for 34 years, was also honoured for a career defined by student leadership and her work with the local

archives.

PIL L AR S O F ST R E N GT H Others were recognized for their steady hands during difficult times or their commitment to local infrastructure.

David Klassen of Russell was recognized for his profound compassion as a funeral home operator and his tireless volunteerism on local committees. In Olha, Marion Koltusky – famously known as the town’s “population of one” – was celebrated for over 50 years of running her country store and serving as a friend to every traveller. Donna Morken of Rivers was highlighted as a powerhouse of development, instrumental in transforming the old RBC building into a library and founding the Rivers Community Foundation.

K E E PE R S O F H IST O R Y AN D SPIR IT Preserving the stories and culture of the region was a re-

curring theme among the recipients. At 90 years old, Margaret Ashcroft of Birtle was recognized for her lifetime of service, including her leadership at the Birdtail Country Museum. Doreen Stapleton of Sandy Lake was acknowledged for her years on municipal council and for sharing her musical talents at personal care homes and church events. In Oakburn, Joan Marie Derhak was celebrated as a fixture of the Recreation Committee for 27 years and the heart of every local “Homecoming” celebration.

BE Y O N D T H E U N IF O R M The final group of recipients proved that a sense of duty rarely ends with retirement. Michael Ramsden of Kenton, a veteran with 29 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and two peacekeeping medals, continued his service through Ground Search and Rescue. Norm Sims of Minnedosa, a distin-

guished legal mind, contributed his leadership to the Kinsmen, the Legion, and Ducks Unlimited. Finally, Ron Taylor of Rivers was honoured as a beloved former principal who brought nature to life for his students, from planting trees to restocking Rivers Lake with fish.

With the final medal pinned and the last speech delivered, this year-long project comes to a close. However, the impact of these 12 individuals, and their fellow recipients across Riding Mountain, continues every day.

These ceremonies were a rare chance to pull the curtain back on the people who keep our small towns running.

As these local legends return to their volunteer boards, their businesses, and their families, they do so with a small token of a nation’s gratitude for a lifetime of work that rarely asks for a spotlight.

The Editor & Publisher magazine reports a record 129 press members were killed in 2025 – Israel responsible for two-thirds of deaths.

At a time when armed conflict has reached historic levels around the world, journalist killings also reached an all-time high primarily due to the actions of one government: Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129 – the highest ever number documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) since the organization started keeping

We used go to nightclubs, and drink a little booze. Now we stay home at night, and watch the evening news.

W hen p rotection feels m ore like p ressure I spent more time than planned in a dentist’s chair this week. Three visits, good care, Blue Cross covered, and overdue maintenance addressed – but with one unexpected takeaway.

I don’t subscribe to cable, but my dentist does. When you’re in the chair, the television is meant to distract from the dental work, and so, apparently, from thinking too hard. Between news updates, a steady stream of advertisements played – all clearly aimed at seniors. Life insurance. Final expenses. Guaranteed approval. Income disappearing. Family unprotected.

Home at risk. No legacy.

“Pays you while you’re still alive.”

By the third visit, the messages felt less like helpful advice and more like calculated pressure.

Canadians are an exceptionally well-insured people.

We insure our cars, our homes, our travel, even our appliances – and increasingly, we’re encouraged to insure our anxieties. Insurance itself isn’t the problem. In the right circumstances, it can be sensible and even essential.

But particularly where seniors are concerned, something has shifted.

Berger T H E GOOD LIF E Older Canadians are increasingly treated as a profit centre – not only by outright scammers, but by legitimate, licensed industries that market fear as a product. Most of these companies operate within regulations. Still, legality doesn’t always equal fairness, clarity, or good value.

The ads share a familiar tone. They rarely explain products in plain terms. Instead, they lean on what might happen if you don’t act now. The unspoken message is as moral as it is financial: responsible people buy insurance; those who don’t are leaving trouble behind.

ready vulnerable. Dental offices, clinics, pharmacies, and waiting rooms are captive environments. You can’t change the station. You can’t leave easily. And you’re often already thinking about health, aging, and money. It’s hard not to notice how consistently seniors are targeted in these spaces.

What the ads also leave out is context. Canada already provides a public safety net through universal health care, Old Age Security, the Canada Pension Plan, and income supports such as GIS. That doesn’t remove all risk, but it does change the math. Private insurance is meant to fill genuine gaps – not replace thoughtful planning with reflexive buying driven by anxiety.

Many products marketed heavily to seniors are legal and regulated. That doesn’t make them good value by default. Some carry high premiums relative to payouts.

Some pay only under narrowly defined conditions.

Some are sold as

“investment-like,” even though their returns struggle to match basic savings. None of this is obvious in a 30second advertisement.

Perhaps the most troubling shift is how responsibility itself is being sold. Insurance advertising increasingly suggests that the “right” thing to do is to buy – regardless of personal circumstances. That isn’t education.

It’s emotional leverage.

A more useful approach starts with a few straightforward questions – ones advertisements rarely encourage people to ask: Who actually depends on my income today? If no one relies on your income to cover essentials like housing or food, some forms of insurance may be addressing fear more than need.

What public benefits do I already receive or qualify for? CPP, OAS, GIS, survivor benefits, and pensions all matter. Planning should begin with what’s already guaranteed.

When and how does this policy pay out? Words like

“guaranteed” and “pays while you’re alive” sound reassuring, but conditions matter. Ask what must occur, how often benefits are paid, and how long it takes.

What does this cost over time? Weekly premiums sound small. Long-term totals rarely are.

What happens if I stop paying? Some policies lose value quickly or collapse altogether. Flexibility is especially important on a fixed income.

There’s also a simple bit of math worth doing before signing anything.

A policy advertised at $10 per week costs about $520 per year. Over 20 years, that’s $10,400 in premiums. Compare that to the guaranteed payout, the conditions required to receive it, and when it realistically applies.

Then consider the alternative. What happens if that same $520 per year is saved or invested conservatively instead? Even modest growth can change the outcome – and the money remains accessible. Finally, factor in in-

flation. A $25,000 payout 20 years from now will buy far less than $25,000 today unless it’s indexed. Many policies aren’t.

None of this is an argument against insurance across the board. There are life stages when term insurance makes sense, and risks worth protecting against. But insurance works best when it covers unlikely, catastrophic events – not when it’s purchased to quiet manufactured worry.

A community newspaper’s role isn’t to tell readers what to buy. It’s to help them think clearly in a crowded marketplace. Seniors, especially, deserve transparency rather than urgency – explanation rather than implication. Protection has value.

Peace of mind has value. But fear, sold loudly and repeatedly, is not the same thing as security.

In the end, there are really only two sensible options: ask the questions and do the math – or recognize and opt out of fear-based advertising altogether.

“The main thing is to start,” says Krista Powell, with Sunrise Credit Union (SCU).

When it comes to your finances, that simple advice is often the hardest to follow, but it is the most critical.

With 19 branches primarily in the Parkland and Westman regions, including Minnedosa, Sandy Lake, Shoal Lake, Strathclair, and Virden – Powell and the team at SCU spend a lot of time breaking down the barriers that keep people from investing.

With tax season here, many of us are looking for ways to keep more of our money. While a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is often viewed as something for the distant future, Powell argues that your younger years are actually your most powerful financial asset.

“After your monthly bills are paid and essential expenses are covered, the extra cash that is left over probably doesn’t spark thoughts of retirement savings,” Powell said. “But starting early, even with small amounts, can give your savings time to grow, and give you more freedom in the future.”

Understanding the basics… the logistics of an RRSP are straightforward, but they require a basic understanding of how the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) views your income. There is no minimum age to open one, provided you meet two conditions.

“First, you must be earning income, whether from employment or business,” Powell explained. “The second condition is that you must be over 18 to contribute more than $2,000 a year.”

Because the CRA uses

your annual income to calculate your contribution room, that limit can shift year to year. For young professionals or those just entering the workforce in our region, your initial contribution room might be small, but it grows as your career progresses.

The simplest way to track this is by checking your CRA online account for your current cap.

One of the most compelling reasons to start now is compound interest. Powell described it in a way that resonates with anyone who has ever seen a Manitoba winter.

“It is like a snowball rolling down a hill, growing bigger over time. The earlier you start contributing to your RRSP, the more time it has to grow.”

By earning interest on your interest, your money effectively starts working for you. If you wait until your 40s to start, you have to contribute significantly more each month just to catch up to someone who started with small, $20 increments in their 20s.

Every thought of RRSPs as flexibility for life’s major milestones?

An RRSP isn’t just a locked-away retirement fund.

According to Powell, it can be a tool for major life goals like buying a home or going back to school.

“Your RRSP can be used to help you purchase your first home or fund your education,” Powell added.

“Through the CRA’s Home Buyers Plan, you can withdraw a portion of your RRSP

to put toward a down payment on your first home.”

The same applies to the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) for tuition. Both programmes allow you to borrow from yourself tax-free, provided you repay the funds into the account over a 15-year period.

It is a strategic way to use your savings for your current needs without sacrificing your long-term security.

N AVIGAT IN G T AX SE ASO N For those currently looking at their tax returns and wishing they owed less, Powell noted that RRSPs offers a direct solution. Contributions provide a tax deduction that reduces your taxable income.

If you earn $100,000 and put $10,000 into an RRSP, you’re only taxed on $90,000.

In many cases, this deduc-

tion can be the difference between owing the government money in April or receiving a much-needed refund. If you don’t have the cash on hand before the deadline, Powell suggests considering an RRSP loan – a common strategy for many of the SCU members.

“By borrowing an amount close to your expected tax refund, you can use the refund to quickly pay down the loan,” she says. “In effect, you’re directing your money toward your own savings instead of sending it to the government in taxes.”

But… are RRSPs always the right choice?

While the RRSP is a powerful tool, Powell emphasized that it should be part of a broader conversation. For some young earners in lower

tax brackets, a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) might be a better starting point because the tax savings of an RRSP are more impactful when you are in a higher income bracket.

This is where the benefit of a member-owned institution like SCU shines. Because profits are reinvested into the communities they serve, the focus is on finding the right fit for the individual member. Overall, the aim is to build good money habits for the long haul.

Successful investing is about consistency rather than waiting for a windfall.

U15 Chiefs in consolation final The Yellowhead Chiefs have advanced to the consolation championship final in the Winnipeg U15 AAA Hockey League.

The Chiefs, who defeated the Southwest Cougars 3-1 in their semi-final series, will face the Winnipeg Wild Red, who swept their series with the Central Plains Capitals.

The first two games of the final will be in Winnipeg on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15. Game three will be played in Shoal Lake on Tuesday, March 17, with a possible game four also in Shoal Lake on Thursday, March 19. Game five, if necessary, will be back in Winnipeg on Sunday, March 22.

Generally, small seeds need not be covered with soil but instead gently pressed into the media or soil. Medium seeds can be lightly covered and large seeds can be poked right into the soil. A good rule of thumb is to plant the seed to the depth of their diameter.

Keep the soil moist to ensure even germination whether you are seeding indoors or directly into the garden. Use a gentle spray to avoid washing the seeds around, or they may pool into dense clumps. Keep the humidity high until the seeds germinate by covering seed pots with plastic wrap. Once you see the plants germinate, uncover the seedlings to avoid.

Once the seeds germinate those young seedlings will need adequate light in order to grow. Placing them directly under a fluorescent light fixture will ensure that the seedlings are strong and sturdy. If you find that your seedlings are tall and spindly it is because they are not getting enough light and are reaching for the sun.

As far as the time to plant any type of seed, it is most helpful if you look at when you might wish to put that plant outside. Do some research on how long that seed will take to germinate and look at the days until harvest?

This will help you to estimate that best time to plant.

The wonder of a tiny seed germinating and growing into a mature plant that gives us beauty or food is simply amazing. It is an experience for everyone regardless of your age and level of experience. It is an even more important experience as it also gives the knowledge of how to grow at least some of your own food.

Growing your own plants from seed means that you can grow almost anything your heart desires. There is an amazing selection of different varieties and cultivars of plants that sometimes makes it rather difficult for us to decide what we should grow. It is easy to get carried away and grow too much as this time of year we are craving green growth and those tiny little packets don’t seem to hold that much! It is only once those plants get growing we see how a few seeds can easily grow into way too many plants! Instead of planting all the seeds in the package, only plant as many as you will need. Share the leftovers or store them in a cool, dry place.

In order to be successful starting seeds, it is useful to understand a little bit about the seed itself and what it requires to germinate. Seeds are made up of an outer seed coat that protects the inner parts of the seed during dormancy.

Inside the seed coat lies the endosperm, which serves as the food supply that is essential for the early growth of the seedling. In the center of the seed is the embryo, which is really a very minute undeveloped plant.

There are four things that seeds need to germinate. Water is essential for penetrating the seed coat, which causes the endosperm to swell. The water dissolves nutrients in the endosperm, which are then available to the embryo and life begins! Some seeds need light in order to germinate while others do not. Oxygen is also necessary, as the seed needs to respire in order to break down those nutrients in the endosperm. Last but not least, germination requires heat. Each seed will have an optimum germination temperature for the best rate of growth.

Q: I’m taking a GLP-1 to help me control my blood sugar and lose weight. But the cost and side effects of having to do resistance exercise make it difficult to stay on it. Is there anything I can do to prevent weight regain once I stop taking it? – Jerry T., Bozeman, MT A: Weight regain after stopping the GLP-1s semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) is a well-documented problem.

A new study in BMJ found that most folks regained around 10 to 22 pounds in the first year after going off the meds, and between 1.5 and 1.7 years after stopping, they had regained all the weight they lost. An earlier study in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found that not only did folks regain weight, but they also lost the heart-health benefits they’d earned, such as lower blood pressure, less risk of osteoarthritis, kidney disease, dementia and lung disease, and better glucose control.

If you stop these medications, you can prevent weight regain – but it takes willpower and commitment. The rebound is caused by bodily reactions that are hard to control and lifestyle choices that you have control over.

GLP-1s slow down food movement though the stomach and intestines, and dampen down hunger. But when that hunger-blocking effect disappears, you’re told by your body to eat more.

LEWANDOSKI: Lorrie Lewandoski peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the age of 89. Lorrie was born on July 29, 1936, the second oldest of four children to Mike and Olga Lewandoski of Sandy Lake, MB. He attended Pulvers Lake School until Grade 6, but like many of his generation, farm work soon became his full-time classroom. He worked on the family farm until age 20, then spent a short time in Vancouver, BC in the fall of 1956 working on the docks with Ernie Rystephanuk. Returning home, he purchased a three-ton gravel truck and gravelled roads for three years. In winter, he worked on the Ice Gang cutting ice on Sandy Lake. After his father’s passing, Lorrie and his brother Lenard committed to farming full time. On Oct. 17, 1964, Lorrie married Ollie Lewandoski. Together they built a life rooted in hard work and family.

Through the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lorrie and Lenard expanded the farm – a bold decision at the time that proved worthwhile.

He worked hard but treasured time with family whether it was taking family trips to Disney or fishing up north with the extended family, he was in his happy place. Lorrie was always learning, whether it was farming, welding, or inventing tools to make the work easier. In later years, Gido could be found driving the three-wheeler around the farm with his grandchildren, picking saskatoons and raspberries to share, or watching birds squabble over the feed he set out for them. He loved tending his garden and enjoying its rewards – especially feasts of corn and young potatoes,

and his favourite fresh lettuce sandwiches. Lorrie always had stories to share – about pioneer farming days, gravelling roads, working on the Ice Gang, foraging for mushrooms, and knowing which wild plants you could eat. He was a proud and active member of the Sandy Lake community. He made the eight-foot Christmas wreaths for all the local businesses, helped with perogie making for the DropIn Centre, and even built a mud hut in town to show how people once lived. Prior to 2018, Lorrie and Ollie travelled for many years before moving to Rotary Villa in Brandon.

After Ollie’s passing in 2022, Lorrie returned home to the Sandy Lake Care Home in 2023. Lorrie was predeceased by his parents, Mike (1961) and Olga (1987), and his beloved wife Ollie (2022). He leaves to mourn his sons Wayne and Warren; sister Laverne Jaffrey; brothers Lenard and Les (Chub); grandchildren Mike, Isabella, and Max; great grandchildren Liam and Olivia (Ollie); and many relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held at Sandy Lake Hall on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Heather Parrott-Howdle officiating. Pallbearers were Mike Lewandoski, Isabella Krowelski, Max Krowelski, Luc Lewandoski, Josh Lewandoski, and Colin Lewandoski. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Sandy Lake Endowment Fund. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.raesfs.ca. Rae’s Funeral Service of Shoal Lake and Erickson were in care of arrangements.

This March, designated as Pharmacy Appreciation Month, provincial health officials are highlighting a major shift – pharmacists are now part of the frontline team for medical prescriptions, lab work, and chronic disease management.

Across Manitoba, and especially in rural towns where they serve as the primary “healthcare hub,” pharmacists have moved be-

yond dispensing pills to providing clinical care that previously required a doctor’s visit.

Authorized pharmacists can now access and prescribe medication for minor ailments, including: •Urinary tract infections (UTIs) •Allergies, cold sores, and

headaches •Skin conditions like acne and dermatitis •Smoking cessation aids To ease the burden on the primary care system, for several years now pharmacists have taken on more complex medication management. Under new protocols, they can extend prescriptions for chronic conditions if a patient’s regular doctor is unavailable, ensuring no gaps in treatment. They are also authorized to adapt prescriptions – altering dosages or formulation to better suit a patient’s specific needs.

Furthermore, pharmacists with advanced training will soon be able to order lab tests to monitor how well a patient’s medication is working, collaborating directly with physicians to adjust care plans in real-time.

F R E E BIR T H CO N T R O L IN IT IAT IVE In a major push for accessibility, Manitoba Health has recently reminded residents that prescription birth control is now available at no cost under the provincial Pharmacare program.

Pharmacies are now re-

quired to process these claims so that eligible Manitobans pay nothing out-ofpocket. “Pharmacists are the guides to ensuring patients receive this free benefit,” the province stated, adding that any resident incorrectly denied coverage should contact the Minister of Health at 204945-3731.

Beyond prescriptions, pharmacists continue to serve as the region’s most accessible immunization providers, offering injections for

vaccines and medications.

They also interpret patientadministered tests for cholesterol and blood glucose, acting as a translator for complex medical data.
