The communities of Minnedosa, Russell, Rossburn, and Shoal Lake, along with Killarney and Ste. Rose, are set to receive seven internationally trained doctors this fall to address a critical family physician shortage.

The physicians, recruited by Prairie Mountain Health (PMH), have signed four-year return-ofservice agreements.

Under the placement plan, Dr. Karen Aquino and Dr. Moazzam Raza will be based in Minnedosa, while Dr. Porimol Debnath will serve the Russell area. Dr. Ana Hernandez is assigned to provide

care for both Rossburn and Shoal Lake. These communities were prioritized for recruitment after being identified as high-need areas in November.

The recruitment follows a highly competitive selection process through the international medical graduates’ program, which accepts only 30 of more than 1,000

applicants annually.

Tamara Kemp-Boulet, PMH physician recruitment and retention co-ordinator, stated that the regional health authority typically places seven to eight graduates in rural communities each year.

To secure long-term commitment, PMH uses site visits to integrate doctors and their families

into local infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities.

The influx of new doctors is expected to stabilize emergency department services, which have recently faced temporary closures due to a lack of physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff.

An October 2025 report by Doctors Manitoba revealed the province lost 8.3 physicians per 1,000 to other jurisdictions in 2024 – which is the second-worst rate in Canada.

Health officials have identified physician retention as the critical focus for the system in 2026.

Strathclair Theatre Chorus will perform in a pair of local communities this month, with a stop in Hamiota on Saturday, Jan. 10 as a fundraiser for the Hamiota United Church, as well as a performance at the Bend Theatre in Strathclair on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Strathclair Theatre Chorus is directed by David Wolfe (Brandon) and accompanied by on piano by Penny Menzies (Inglis) and Zack Koscielny (Strathclair) on fiddle

and bass guitar. The 50 men and women who make up the ensemble this year come from Basswood, Birtle, Brandon, Cardale, Erickson, Hamiota, Minnedosa, Newdale, Oak River, Onanole, Rivers, Shoal Lake, and Strathclair.

They rehearse from midSeptember to mid-November and then perform in various communities in southern Manitoba. This year, their schedule includes concerts in Birtle, Minnedosa, Brandon, Hamiota and Strathclair.

It is officially January 2026, and while the turning of the calendar usually brings a flood of talk about gym memberships or interesting new hobbies, the conversation feels much heavier this year. For most of us, the “fresh start” we are looking for isn’t about selfimprovement in the traditional sense; it’s about survival and finding a way to finally feel steady once again on our feet.

Financially, the last few years have been more than just a rough patch. We’ve watched the economy melt down and reshape itself in ways that left almost no one untouched. If you were already struggling before the world turned upside down, the recent climb now feels nearly impossible.

I want to be honest with you… I am not a financial expert. Like so many of you, I have spent the last few years just trying to keep my head above water. I know what it feels like to crawl toward the end of the month, wondering if the floor is ever going to stop moving.

You aren’t imagining how hard it is. Recent re-

ports from MNP, one of Canada’s largest insolvency firms, show that here in Manitoba, 43% of us are living within $200 of not being able to pay our bills at the end of the month. On top of that, Canada’s Food Price Report for 2026 warns that the average family will likely pay nearly $2,500 more for groceries this year than we did in 2025.

Personally, in this struggle, I have been using my time to research and listen to the people around me – friends, family, and professionals – who understand what it’s like to start with very little.

One thing that is helping me right now is an “inventory of reality.” It isn’t a complex spreadsheet… it’s just a plain, honest look at what is coming in and what is going out. I have often wanted to avoid looking at my bank balance because the numbers feel like a personal failure, but I’m realizing that clarity is the only thing that kills that nagging anxiety. Once you see the numbers on paper, they stop being a monster in the dark and start being a set of facts you can manage.

Another shift I’ve researched is moving away

from the idea of “saving for a rainy day” and toward “saving for the next crisis.”

When you’re living through years of financial chaos, a traditional savings goal can feel like a joke. Instead, I am looking for the smallest leaks in the boat – those overlooked subscriptions or the convenience costs that add up when we’re exhausted. Reclaiming even $20 a month isn’t about being cheap; it’s about building a tiny fortress that belongs only to you.

I also recently saw a report that really hit home… did you know that just $27.40 a day for a year equals to over $10,000? That is mindboggling! A drink at the gas station, a snack on your way to or from work… over a year really adds up.

Expanding on the importance of being frugal is the idea that we need to start being okay with where we are and what we already have.

We are constantly pressured to feed into a consumerism that is essentially keeping us broke. This year, I am trying to find peace with what is already in my pantry, what is already in my closet, and what is already in my home.

There is a quiet power in deciding that what you have is

“enough” for right now. Instead of looking for the next thing to buy, we can focus on using what we’ve already worked hard to earn.

However, sometimes the math simply doesn’t add up.

If you’ve reached the point where you need professional guidance or basic essentials, there are networks right here in our Parkland and Westman communities that offer help without judgment: •Regional Services for Seniors: Most of our towns, including Birtle, Hamiota, Minnedosa, Russell, Shoal Lake, and Sandy Lake – have dedicated Senior Resource Coordinators. While they primarily help older adults age in place, they are often the most knowledgeable people in town for finding local resources, transit, and community supports for anyone in need.

•The Benefits Wayfinder (by Prosper Canada): This is a neat online tool that works like a road map. You answer a few questions, and it lists every federal and Manitoba benefit you are eligible for, such as the Residential Renters Tax Credit or the Manitoba Child Benefit.

•Regional Food Banks: We are fortunate to have a strong local network. There

are community-run food banks in almost every community ready to help. Most are found through local church offices or town websites.

•Regional Employment Resource Centres: With offices in locations such as Minnedosa and Russell, these hubs help with far more than just jobs. They are local access points for federal and provincial programs, helping you navigate the paperwork for income supports.

•Community Financial Help Line: You can call or text 1-431-813-HELP (4357).

This Manitoba-wide service helps people file taxes for free to ensure they receive all the credits and benefits they are owed.

•211 Manitoba: Dialing 21-1 is the fastest, confidential way to find out which specific organization in your hometown has the resources you need today.

•As well, Many local credit unions and banks offer free credit services and information to help save or invest the penny rather than spend, spend, spend...

Perhaps the most important thing I am gathering from others is that we have to start talking to each other

again. Financial struggle is often accompanied with silence and shame. If you’re feeling the pinch, chances are your neighbour is too.

There is real power in being the one to say, “I’m staying in this month because I’m prioritizing my peace of mind, and financial wellbeing.”

I’m still figuring this out, and I’m right there in the thick of it with you. But as we move through 2026, let’s remember that stability is built in these small, unglamorous moments of honesty, reflection, and contentment.

We are all rebuilding from the very deep economic crater Canada is in, and it is okay if our biggest achievement this year is simply finding our balance again.

China has officially opened the world’s highest bridge in the world to the public.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge towers 625 m (2,050 ft.) above a gorge in the country’s Guizhou province.

Earlier this year in August, a testing team drove 96 trucks onto designated points to test the bridge’s structural integrity.

W a b K inew ’s record is troubling for rura l M a nitoba ns To the Editor, As Manitobans reflect on the state of the province, it is becoming increasingly difficult to describe Premier Wab Kinew’s record as anything but troubling, particularly for families and communities in southwestern and rural Manitoba.

Two years ago, the NDP campaigned on fixing Manitoba’s health-care system. That promise resonated strongly in rural Manitoba, where access to care has been eroding for years. Unfortunately, the

Letter situation today remains much the same, and in some cases, it has worsened. Emergency room closures, chronic staffing shortages, and long travel times for basic medical services remain a fact of life for many families in the southwest. Doctors Manitoba warned of 25 emergency departments outside of Winnipeg that were reducing hours or closing altogether over the holiday season.

Most concerning is that Manitoba now has two hospitals on a “grey list,” meaning nurses are actively recommending to other nurses that they not work at those facilities. This is a clear warning sign about working conditions and staffing pressures, and it should deeply concern anyone who relies on these hospitals. These safety concerns are not unique to the big hospitals in the city; they have filtered their way into rural Manitoba clinics and facilities.

At the same time, the Kinew government raised income taxes and education property taxes, increasing the financial burden on Manitobans who are already struggling with the cost of living.

The Premier stopped linking income tax brackets to inflation, which means that as inflation goes up, so do your income taxes. This is known as bracket creep and is a sneaky way for the NDP government to increase your taxes without having to tell you that they are doing so. Manitoba

is the only province that suffers from bracket creep, especially disappointing considering the PC government got rid of it in 2017.

Adding to these concerns is a projected provincial deficit of $1.6 billion. After two years in office, Manitobans were expecting prudent management and measurable progress, not deeper deficits and unresolved crises in essential services. Sky-high deficits like this mean we are going to see one of two things – even higher taxes, or cuts to

the services that Manitobans rely on.

While the next provincial election is not scheduled until October 2027, the Premier could drop the writ at any time, likely trying to take advantage of his fragile popularity in the City of Winnipeg.

After two years of unmet promises, it’s reasonable for Manitobans to consider whether new voices are needed at the table.

“The poll shows that Canadians understand that a carbon tax on business is a carbon tax on Canadians that makes life more expensive,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Only 12 percent of Canadians believe Prime Minister Mark Carney’s claim that businesses will pay most of the cost of his carbon tax.

“It’s doesn’t matter what lipstick politicians put on their carbon tax pig, all carbon taxes make life more expensive, hurt our economy and don’t work.”

Though dementia affects more than half a million Canadians, and one in five Canadians have experience caring for someone living with dementia, there is still a lack of awareness of the many issues that face people living with dementia, caregivers and families in Canada.

That’s why the Alzheimer Society of Canada in association with provincial outlets hope to help families understand dementia, and the resources available to those navigating the disease by sharing stories from individuals who experience dementia daily. Living with or standing close by to a loved one diagnosed with dementia, families turn to their local Alzheimer Society for guidance and information.

With January being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is sharing stories of individuals navigating dementia, and who have found receiving support from the Alzheimer Society makes a difference.

Among those to share stories was Ken Krulicki, whose wife Brenda was diagnosed with young onset dementia, and upon learning the diagnosis, he was left lost and alone.

Turning to the Alzheimer Society’s First Link Client Support Staff they connected Ken with resources including a care partner support group where he met and received support from others going through similar situations.

K E N ’S ST O R Y When my family and I began noticing my wife’s forgetfulness and changes in her behaviour, we assumed it was due to her demanding career as a home care case coordinator and being overworked. But these changes kept progressing, and after a while, we couldn’t ignore the signs of dementia.

Brenda was eventually diagnosed with early-onset dementia. My two sons and my

They listened, helped me better understand what I was going through and connected me to a variety of different resources including the annual Care4u conference and care partner support groups.

Attending the support groups has helped me tremendously. It’s so refreshing to walk into a space and just know you’re understood.

Whatever your situation or changes you’re experiencing, the other people in that room get it. They have become an extension of my family.

Learning tips from them has gone a long way in helping me care for Brenda and understand more about what she’s experiencing.

Brenda now lives in longterm care, and I’ve had to adjust to living on my own. It’s the little things, like cooking

a meal alone, which makes me realize how much dementia has affected our lives. I feel Brenda’s absence from our home all the time. With the help of the Alzheimer Society, my children and I focus on giving Brenda the best care we can. We visit Brenda nearly every day. She was the glue that held us together – now we’re giving back all the love and strength she’s given to us.

What are some tips you would give to others experiencing dementia?

Contact the Alzheimer Society – I tell anyone I can that the first thing to do if you notice things that go be-

yond normal signs of aging is to contact the Alzheimer Society.

You can’t always see the forest when you’re in the trees – keep an eye out for your neighbours, colleagues, friends and family who may be struggling with dementia.

Educate yourself on dementia – the more we know, the earlier we can catch signs and symptoms. Learning more about dementia can also help you become more confident as a care partner.

Join a support group – there’s a whole community of people out there going through situations just like yours who are eager to listen and share ideas with you.

Support groups lifted me up and gave me the reassurance I needed to keep going.

Society’s mission to alleviate the personal and social consequences of dementia. And while Alzheimer’s Awareness Month may stop at the end of January, the experiences of people who live with dementia do not, such, you are asked to take what you’ve learned during the month and continue to share it throughout the year.

Did you know that staying socially active and challenging your brain are two ways you can reduce the risk of dementia or help slow the progression of dementia symptoms?

Staying connected socially helps you stay connected mentally! Having an active social life can also reduce your stress, brighten your mood and keep your relationships strong – all great things for your brain health.

The Society has made significant strides in the community, however, dementia remains an incredibly challenging diagnosis.

“Here we are, 40 years later, and there is still more work to do to break the stigma surrounding this disease so that families feel more comfortable reaching out to us for support,” says Erin Crawford, CEO, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Ch iefs w in second ga m e of ba ck-to-ba ck The Yellowhead Chiefs picked up their first win of 2026 as they won the back half of a Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League weekend doubleheader in Shoal Lake against the Winnipeg Thrashers.

The Chiefs are 14-18-0-2 on the season and sit in ninth place.

CH IE F S 5 T H R ASH E R S 2 The Chiefs took a 3-1 first period lead enroute to a 5-2 win over the Thrashers in Shoal Lake on Sunday, Jan. 4.

Nolan Kozak and Alec Strachan each scored twice and assisted on another for the Chiefs. Ethan Turchinski was the other Yellowhead marksman.

Liam Flett and Russell Aitkenhead tallied for the visitors, who trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Sawyer Wallin stood tall in goal for the Chiefs, stopping 39 shots. Nolan Giles finished with 26 saves for the Winnipeg squad.

The visitors, who led 2-0 and 6-2 at the intermissions, got single goals off the sticks of Dixon Hartwich, Ed Saly, Kaden Sutherland and Noah Bonds.

Alec Strachan, Winston Lepp and Nolan Kozak were the Yellowhead marksmen.

Nolan Giles made 27 saves to earn the win in goal. Landon McGregor finished with 38 stops in the Yellowhead net.

ter the first period and the Chiefs led 3-2 after 40 minutes before the Selects exploded.

Ty Mistelbacher tied the game, and just 38 seconds later Jax Huberdeau gave the Selects their first lead of the game. Thirty seconds later Carson Flock put the hosts up by two. Jevon Peters and Crosby Mateychuk had the other Eastman goals.

Nolan Kozak, Ethan Turchinski, Carter Brown and Alec Strachan were the Yellowhead marksmen.

Carter Warren stopped 28 shots in the Selects’ net, while Landon McGregor made a whopping 52 saves for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are tied with the Winnipeg Avros for fourth place in the eight-team league.

Callee Despiegelaere staked the Chiefs to a 1-0 lead in the first period and the score held up until the third when Maren Temple and Halle Chabluk scored for the hosts to take the lead.

After overtime decided nothing, the Ice outscored the Chiefs 2-1 in the shootout with Kate Cairns credited with the

winner.

Gina Plett made 21 saves in the Winnipeg net, while Kylie Hack blocked 40 shots for the Chiefs.

Ella Sellman gave the Chiefs a 1-0 first period lead but Gianna Yaschyshyn tied the score just 44 seconds into

the second period.

Yaschyshyn scored what would prove to be the game winner early in the third before Angelina Frey put the game away with a goal with just nine seconds left.

Charlie Fust made 29 saves to earn the win in goal for the Hawks, while Pyper Rapley stopped 32 shots in the Yellowhead net.

NOTES – The Chiefs have a home and home series with

Virden R CM P investiga ting Sioux Va lley h om icide On Dec. 30, Virden RCMP were dispatched to a report of a stabbing at a residence in the community of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Officers responded immediately and upon arrival were advised that the male suspect had fled on foot. Two males, aged 23 and 25, were located at the residence with stab wounds.

The 25-year-old was transported to hospital by EMS in serious condition and shortly thereafter succumbed to his injuries. The 23-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Officers were able to locate the suspect a short time later at another residence in the community and he was arrested without incident with the assistance of RCMP officers from the Blue Hills Detachment, the West District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) and Police Dog Services. A 16year-old male youth, from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, has been charged with Second Degree murder.

On Jan. 3, Morris RCMP were notified of a collision on Highway 75, just south of St. Jean Baptiste in the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Montcalm, involving a semi-truck and a pedestrian. Morris RCMP responded immediately and located the victim laying in the median ditch and two semi-trucks stopped in the southbound lane of Highway 75. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver of one of the semitrucks was struck by the other semi-truck while on the highway. The victim, a 57year-old male from Winnipeg, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the other semi-truck, a 33-year-old male

On Jan. 1, Dauphin RCMP were dispatched to a report of a break and enter at a restaurant on Main Street South in Dauphin. RCMP attended and learned that while the restaurant was closed overnight, a male entered through the drive-through window and stole donation boxes containing cash. Officers were able to identify a suspect after viewing video surveillance footage.

On Jan. 2, officers were patrolling for the suspect when they located him and another male stealing a package from a charitable organization on 1st Ave NE. As police were attempting to arrest him, a struggle ensued and a taser was deployed to safely take him into custody. After a sub-

sequent search of the suspect officers also located a concealed knife. The investigation determined the same suspect was also responsible for a break and enter to a business on Main Street North in Dauphin, on Nov. 27. A 42-year-old male of Gilbert Plains, was remanded into custody and faces the following charges: Breaking and entering – business x2, Carrying concealed weapon, Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Resist peace officer, Theft under $5,000, and Possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000 x2.

During the struggle with Parenteau, a second male suspect, a 23-year-old male of Pine Creek, managed to escape. He was later located on Jan. 4, in Dauphin, and safely taken into custody. Investigators determined that he had been in possession of a truck that was stolen on Jan. 1, in Dauphin, which had been left running and unattended. The truck contained a bank card which he then used to make purchases. The truck was later recovered by police. The 23year-old male was remanded into custody and faces the following charges: Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, Possession of

On Dec. 26, Steinbach RCMP received a report of a snowmobile collision near a residence located on Carriere Drive W, in the R.M. of La Broquerie. Officers attended to the scene and located a 41year-old male requiring medical attention. The victim was transported to hospital via STARS Air Ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators believe the victim, who was not wearing a helmet, was operating his snowmobile on private property when he lost control of his machine and crossed over the roadway and collided with an embankment.

On Dec. 24, Gimli RCMP received a request to check

the well-being of an individual at a rural residence near Narcisse in the R.M. of Armstrong. Officers attended the location to find that the residence was completely burnt down. A neighbour reported that a 69-year-old male lived alone in the home. Human remains have since been located in the rubble and are believed to be those of the male resident. At this time the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

On Dec. 16, Grand Rapids RCMP received a report of a pickup truck travelling out onto Cedar Lake and falling through the ice. This occurred approximately 75 meters from shore near the Manitoba Hydro boat launch, located west of the Grand Rapids Generating Station. RCMP, along with local EMS, the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Manitoba Hydro, immediately attended to the area to conduct

a search. Investigators were able to determine that the vehicle, containing a male and female passenger, drove out onto the ice when it broke through. Tracks were seen leading from the boat ramp out onto the ice. The two occupants were unable to escape the vehicle before it went under. The fire department launched a zodiac to conduct a search in the nearby open water with the RCMP launching a drone to conduct an aerial search for any heat signatures in or near the water, none were located. The search continued throughout the day without success. Earlier this afternoon, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT), who deployed to the area yesterday morning, located the pickup truck in the water.

The two occupants were not found within the vehicle. The RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team is continuing its search.

The municipality has two wards; they are divided by an approximate equal population of permanent residents in each ward. Ward 1 and Ward 2 each consist of 3 council representatives, and the Reeve represents both wards. Whitewood: Grasslands News – Joe Ashfield, a towering figure in Whitewood’s newspaper and community life for many decades, passed away on Nov. 30. Under his leadership, The Herald now the Herald Sun, became a consistent award winner, including natural honours for Best All Round Newspaper in its circulation class. Throughout his life, the 88-year-old remained a steady voice in the community – a mentor, a storyteller, and a dedicated advocate for the role of local journalism in rural Saskatchewan. He leaves behind his wife Cindy and their families.

Boissevain: The Recorder – Standing as a fixture in the community of Hartney for 119 years, the property of which the Hartney Town Hall stood on is now empty. Deemed unsafe, demolition crews started the process of taking down the yellow brick building in mid-November. Plans are to transform the site into a memorial park, with the original Town Hall bell and sign installed at its center, preserving the spirit and history of the structure for future generations.

Baldur/Glenboro: The Gazette – An outstanding ball player, Leah Hamilton, was named Baseball Manitoba’s Girls U14 Player of the Year for 2025. The daughter of Trent and Kya Hamilton of Kenora, ON, began her quest to become a baseball player at the age of five on a Glenboro diamond. Truly, her story is only getting started, and with grit and determination a passion for the game will continue with the hopes and

dreams of becoming involved in the global Professional Women’s Baseball League teams.

Virden: The EmpireAdvance – Long-time educator and community volunteer Kel Smith, along with veteran

firefighter and recreation leader John Davidson, were acknowledged by the community of Virden, as the two outstanding nominees for the 2025 Citizen of the Year award. Nominated by Herb and Marie Warkentin, David-

son was recognized as the award recipient, accepting the plaque from Virden Mayor Tina Williams.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre has released the 2025 Manitoba Basins Fall Conditions Report, which provides an assessment of hydrologic conditions at the time of freeze-up for forecasting spring runoff. The report summarizes soil moisture conditions, river flows and lake level conditions, as well as an overview of long-range weather predictions heading into winter and spring.

Most Manitoba basins received below to well-below normal precipitation from May to October, while parts of southern Manitoba and the U.S. portions of the Red River basin and Souris River basin received normal

to above-normal amounts.

Soil moisture at freeze-up was near normal to above normal for parts of southern Manitoba and the U.S. portions of the Red River and Souris River basins. Recordlow spring and summer precipitation in parts of the Interlake region, eastern Manitoba and northern Manitoba has contributed to drought-like conditions in these areas.

The report also includes a long-term precipitation outlook and projected river flows and lake levels across Manitoba basins: •Global weather prediction centres indicate a weak La Niña climate conditions are expected to continue to early winter, with a transi-

tion toward neutral conditions from January to March.

•For Manitoba, La Niña weather patterns typically result in below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation from December through March.

•Most southern Manitoba rivers are near normal for this time of year, while most northern rivers remain below normal.

•Flows on the Red River and Assiniboine River are near normal for this time of year. Flows are below normal on the Saskatchewan River, and well-below normal on the Winnipeg and Churchill rivers.

•Most Manitoba lakes are at normal to below-normal

The near-normal to below-normal soil moisture conditions and near-normal to below-normal river levels indicate a potential for nearnormal to below-normal spring run-off in most Manitoba basins. However, the extent of spring run-off is largely dependent on precipitation throughout the winter and spring and snowmelt conditions. A more detailed spring flood outlook is planned to be released later in February 2026.

Neepawa: The Banner & Press – Construction on the Neepawa Health Centre continues to trudge forward, as progress on the new facility is now approximately 75 to 80 percent complete. According to a release from Prairie Mountain Health (PMH), work on the building’s interior is progressing rapidly, and will remain the main focus of the project throughout the winter months. Once completed, the new health centre will boast 60 acute care inpatient beds, up from 35 at the current Neepawa site. PMH anticipates seeing the first patient in the new facility in early 2027.

Boissevain: The Recorder – The governments of Canada and Manitoba announced their investment of $76.9 million for water and wastewater infrastructure in municipalities. Part of the Canadian Housing Infrastructure Fund’s provincial stream, Boissevain-Morton will receive $6.5 million for its new wastewater lagoon. The municipality itself pledged the borrowing of $2.65 million in a 2024 by-law as their part in the project. With the two figures combined, it should pay for the project creating a route to attract new families and keep life affordable.

Baldur/Glenboro: The Gazette – Mayson Lockhart of Baldur has been named the newest Fire Chief for the Baldur Argyle Fire Department. It was after a personal call to 911 regarding a semi truck on fire just outside of Baldur that Lockhart decided to join the fire department – a dedicated team – he stood by and watched in action in May of 2018. Truly grateful for the trust by the Municipality and other members of the fire department, a confident Lockhart will build on the success achieved together.

the landscape and grow food in that area? It is amazing how a very small bit of land can harvest a lot of food. For example, on a boulevard a few years ago, a group of us harvested around 1,000 pounds of food off of this small little area. We grew corn, potatoes and onions, enjoyed a corn roast and donated the rest of the produce to The Friendship Inn. They graciously accepted our gift and many people who are less fortunate enjoyed a number of very good and nutritious meals as a result of our selfless labours.

While the weather is less hospitable, it allows us more time to pause and reflect about what we wish to change in the garden as spring approaches. Think about trying to grow at least a little bit of the food that you consume. Think about the things that were not working well so you can now begin planning on a better outcome. Most people want a landscape that is beautiful, requires only a small amount of maintenance and of course does not require endless amounts of money while providing food for your table! If your landscape did not fulfill all your dreams, then right now is the time to start to make changes.

This past year flew by! It is hard to believe that we are once again bringing in a brand new year. How was the last year and what might the new year bring? The wonder of a flower opening, a seed sprouting or dead looking twigs miraculously sprouting green leaves is just a daily occurrence if you surround yourself with growing. But just think, what if everyone had this opportunity to live with the glory of growing plants? Would we cure world hunger? Could we achieve world-wide harmony?

I am personally one of the growing trend of people wishing to grow their own food and to make our world a more sustainable place to live. The changes we have seen in our climate are foretelling of future distress, destruction and death. If you are reading this article, then this is your call to take action. It doesn’t matter how small your effort is – it will make a difference. Collectively, we can alter the path that is leading the world, as we know it to destruction.

It is always a good idea to grow food to share with those who are less fortunate.

Just prior to Christmas, I harvested large amounts of fancy leaf lettuce and fresh herbs. I know that this valuable harvest brought smiles to many faces. I survive the winter season by growing intensively inside. Think about the space around you. If you have an area that is not doing anything but growing weeds, then why not change

outside, exercise, see friends and ease stress and distress.

You also need to schedule doctor appointments for regular check-ups and to manage any health conditions you have. Once you’re scheduling in regular self-care, you’ll have a lot more energy and a brighter outlook.

As for caring for your husband post-heart attack, a study in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology shows that strong support from you and a wider network of friends and family has huge hearthealth benefits for him, too.

Arrange for friends to visit or talk with him on the phone or Zoom. You can join him in his cardiac rehab, doing whatever exercises his doctor has suggested. And make sure you’re dishing up hearthealthy meals. Check out my “The What to Eat When Cookbook.”

HERBERT: Peter Philip Herbert, beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2025 at the age of 73. Peter was born July 14, 1952 to Tom and Kay Herbert. He went to Pierson school, ACC in Brandon for mechanics. He married Darcie Shellborn, January 1980. Peter then built their family home on SW

19-4-29 where they raised their family. Peter worked on their grain farm and also enjoyed doing carpentry jobs on the side. Peter and Darcie decided to retire and move closer to their children and grandchildren. Family was very important to Peter, he always enjoyed family gatherings or lending a hand whenever he could. He spent many hours tinkering in his garage, working in the yard or doing his puzzles.

Peter was always up for a game of crib. Peter is survived by his wife Darcie; children Mandi (Dan), Dean (Kellie), Kari-Ida (Andrew): grandchildren Owen, Mikayla, Wynn, Arlo, Sadie, Wyatt and Kaylee; siblings Karen (Ian), Susan, Michael (Kay), Stacie (Andy), Joy (Darren); brothers-in-law Mark, Wade, Spencer and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Tom and Kay Herbert, sister Mary Ida, brother James, brother-in-law Glen, in-laws Emil and Elvera Shellborn, sister-in-law Janice. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

M unicipal M inutes M u n .o f H a rris o n Pa rk

To kick off the Dec. 10 council meeting of the Municipality of Harrison Park (MHP), Councillor Steve Langston reported on the Dec. 2 meeting of the South Mountain Waste Management Group. Council also reviewed and discussed the Conx coinless bulk water system information provided by administration.

Gravel Tenders, Development Agreement (H. Minty) and By-law No. 177 – Harrison Park Zoning By-law, were all Tabled.

Council adopted the Interim Budget for the Fiscal Year 2026.

Council ratified the employment of Ian Sinclair – LUD of Newdale seasonal Village / General Maintenance, and Lorraine Graham – landfill attendant – Newdale.

Upon reviewing the annual updates and amendments put forth by the MHP Emergency Measures Committee to the Municipality’s current Emergency Plan, council approved the plan as amended.

Council set the Designated Year for which properties in arrears to be offered for sale by auction, be 2025, noting all properties with arrears of taxes outstanding at Dec. 31, 2024 and prior shall be sold. The 2026 Tax Sale will be held Nov. 12 at the MHP council chambers with TAXervice Inc. being appointed to conduct the sale.

Surplus Revenue in the amounts of $52,000 will be

placed in the Fire Equipment Replacement Reserve, and the $11,550, will be placed in the Special Administrative Reserve. The net surplus in revenue was from the Province for the resources provided for the 2025 wildfires.

Council held a public hearing regarding Variation Application 2025 V-12, applied for by Brenda Gapka, of which no objections were received. The application of Brenda Gapka, applicant and owner of the property legally described as NW 36-19-22 WPM, to reduce the minimum dwelling square footage from 600 sq. ft. to 396 sq. ft. for a new modular dwelling was approved.

Council also approved CU Application 2025 CU-05, applied for by Larry Krushelnisky, applicant and owner, allowing a non-farm single family dwelling in the “A80” General Agricultural Zone on NE 35-18-19 WPM. Council will request the Community and Regional Planning Office in Brandon to prepare a by-law to rezone part of the SW 9-18-20 WPM from “AL” Agricultural Limited Zone to “R” Residential Zone.

The MHP will submit an application for the 2026 Trail Grant for Manitoba. The grant is intended to provide eligible applicants support for improvement, development and/or maintenance of recreational trail networks at a 2:1 funding ratio to a maximum grant of $15,000.

Communications reviewed by council included Nature Conservancy Canada regarding potential purchase of E1/2 35-18-19.
