2024 — OUR 39TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL: Our anxiously anticipated art festival is held annually on Sunset Drive in vibrant downtown South Miami. An estimated 24,000 patrons visited our last show. Profits from the event benefit local Rotary scholarships and other local and international projects. To learn more, visit our website: somiartfest.org.

WHEN IS THE FESTIVAL? Saturday, February 24, 2024, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. LIVE Music & Dancing until 9 p.m. in the Food Court/Beer Garden. Sunday, February 25, 2024, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHERE IS THE FESTIVAL? On Sunset Drive (SW 72nd St) between US1 and Red Road (SW 57th Ave.).

GETTING THERE: If you’re driving or biking from the north, take US 1 south to Red Road (SW 57th Ave.) and turn left toward Sunset Drive. From the south take Old Cutler or US 1 north toward Sunset Dr. Or take the Metrorail. The South Miami station is right across US 1 from the festival.

PARKING: There is ample on-street parking, garages at Shops of Sunset Place, a City of South Miami garage on SW 58th Ct. north of 73rd St., and on SW 73rd St. across from Bellezza Spa as well as a lot on SW 73rd St. across from the rear entrance of First National Bank of South Miami.

ROTARY DRINKS BOOTH: Rotary will be selling beer, wine, hard seltzers, and water in the Food Court to benefit our charities. Please do not bring outside beverages into the festival. We appreciate your support of our Drinks Booth which stays open Saturday until 9 PM during the Jam Session.

RECYCLING: Bins on every block and in the Food Court. Please use them for your cans and bottles. No food please.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS: South Miami Hospital’s booth will have health information as well as a First Aid station. You can find it at the Food Court, Sunset and 58th Avenue.

ATM LOCATIONS AND CREDIT CARDS: Several banks on Sunset Drive have ATM’s, and all stores and most artists accept major credit cards.

SECURITY: South Miami Police are on site at all times including for overnight surveillance. Rotary volunteers have radio contact with Festival Headquarters at the United Community Bank of South Miami and also with South Miami Police.

LOST AND FOUND: Lost and Found is located in the United Community Bank, 5750 Sunset Drive. After the festival, please call 305-7695977 and leave a message.

REST ROOM FACILITIES: Accessible portable units, including hand-washing stations, are located on SW 58 Ave. in the municipal parking lot behind former Dr. Smood. Ample wayfinding signs will direct you.

FESTIVAL RULES: No solicitation by commercial or nonprofit groups is allowed. Riding skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, scooters, or having large signs or placards which may endanger or inconvenience the public are prohibited.

Festival organizers reserve the right to decline admittance to anyone who violates the reasonable policies established for public safety and the right to restrict activities such as public address to designated areas.

A Message from our President

Welcome to our 39th annual SOMI Art Festl! We’re glad you’ve joined us as you search for those unique fine arts and crafts to take home. Come and celebrate our new name, new marketing, new approach to music (2 stages) and be sure to enjoy the food and drinks in our Food Court/Beer Garden and our wonderful on-stage entertainment which will continue Saturday night until 9:00 PM.

Since 1950, the Rotary Club of South Miami has been the lunchtime networking group for civic-minded business people and professionals in the South Miami, Kendall, and Pinecrest areas. On the 1st and 2nd Tuesday of each month we meet for lunch at the AC Hotel by Marriott Miami Dadeland -7695 N Kendall Dr, Miami, FL 33156- from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Additionally, we have an evening social event every 4th Tuesday at various locations. India, which was once the most Polio prevalent country in the world, has been Polio free for seven years! The efforts of Rotarians and their partners around the globe will pay off---we will soon have a world free of this crippling disease.

JUDGES 2024

Judges selected by the festival committee are chosen for their varied backgrounds and experience in diverse art disciplines. This guarantees that the work of our exhibitors is always in good hands. The winners of this year’s awards will be posted on the front door of show headquarters in the United Community Bank of South Miami late on Saturday afternoon, February 24 at 4 PM. Profiled below are the judges for 2024.

Carlos Enrique Gallostra is a representational artist and instructor based in Miami, Florida. Gallostra holds a B.F.A. from the New World School of the Arts, a conservatory in the heart of Downtown Miami which is affiliated with the University of Florida, as well as a M.F.A. and a M.S. from the Pratt Institute of New York. In addition, Gallostra furthered his studies in classical as well as contemporary approaches to figurative art at various ateliers, academies, and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. As an instructor, Gallostra teaches private clientele as well as several workshops and university courses, which establish a rigorous focus on figurative art and portraiture. His work can be found in several private and public collections.

Sanjeev Chatterjee is a professor in the departments of cinematic arts and of journalism at the School of Communication, University of Miami. He is a documentary filmmaker with particular focus on global issues. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his films that have been seen around the world. Sanjeev is a two-time Fulbright Scholar and sits on the Fulbright National Selection Committee. He is a fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar. Sanjeev lives in Miami with his wife Sumita and their two dogs. Their two adult children Abhi and Uma are in the process of building creative lives.

Mariela Corte has been a working artist for more than 12 years. A past president of the South Florida Jewelry Arts Guild, she is a Board member and chairs the Education Committee. She also belongs to the Florida Society of Goldsmiths. Her primary work is in metal work and wire weaving, but she has worked in Polymer Clay, Enamels and mixed media. Mariela has taken workshops with many prestigious national and international artists such as Mary Hettmansperger, Pauline Warg, Sam Patania, and more. She went to Paris and the south of France for a 2 weeks workshop on “Found objects”with Susan Lenat-Kazmer and Linda Larsen. and she enjoys teaching workshops herself at national shows and art societies.

SYDNEY ALTBACKER

Hailing from Long Island, New York, singer-songwriter Sydney Altbacker is returning to Miami for the South Miami Rotary Arts Festival. With a distinctive sound that reflects her musical influences, Sydney has evolved into a seasoned performer who has a passion for taking the stage and connecting with her audience.

Sydney is a recent graduate of the University of Miami, where she released her debut album “All The Things” on all streaming platforms, and is continuing her artist journey in Nashville, Tennessee!

Sydney will be performing alongside her band members Adam Finkelstein, Sami Govero, Sameer Kumar, and Tucker Moyka, a group of extremely driven and talented musicians. Join them for a night of fun night of music!

JENNA EARHART

Jenna Earhart is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter born and raised in Virginia and influenced by the jazz, r&b, and folk music she was surrounded by while growing up.

She studied contemporary voice and songwriting at the Frost School of Music here in Miami where she graduated from this past May.

She delivers soulful powerhouse vocals and a mix of upbeat songs and introspective acoustic originals

BURGUNDEE

A living amalgamation of RnB, Jazz, and Neo-Soul from Miami, Fl is a five-piece collective currently redefining the standards for both live & recorded music by leaving their multi-genre landscape.

The captivating vocal stylings of lead singer Beatriz Guzman are colored by the imaginative musical choices made by keyboardist Andrew Amengor and guitarist Sergio Zavala while bassist Juan Moreno and drummer Victor Sanchez lay out their infectious grooves.

Burgundee has deftly made a name for themselves in the Miami music scene by performing venues and events like: the Miami Beach Bandshell, The Norton Museum of Art, Gramps, Solar Sounds, Lagniappe, Bar Nancy, The Bridge, Breaking Sound, Doral Yard, The Gibson Room, The Sandbox, and many others.

CATHERINE MAGARINO

Catherine Magarino is a Cuban-American native of Miami, FL. She is a happily active singer, songwriter, music producer, and performer in the realms of pop, contemporary worship, musical theatre, and classical music. A songwriter since the age of 6, Catherine released her first single “Dear Moon” onto streaming platforms in July 2021. Since then she has continued to release her original music which has been streamed in over 70 countries. Her most recent release, “Petal Lips, Icy Eyes,” is a 5-song EP completely self-written, produced, and recorded. It features the popular single “Jeep Wrangler,” which was supported by her own self-created and directed music video. Catherine met her partner Sebastian Hernandez in 2016 while they were both music students at FIU. They have performed together ever since as friends, colleagues, and most recently, fiancés.

EL GRUPO H

El Grupo H is a versatile musical group made up by the members of the Rivas Family. The ensemble created the musical arrangements and performed the score for the soundtrack of “Rebelion”, a Netflix film about the life of legendary Colombian salsero Joe Arroyo. The family is active both as performers and as recording artists. El Grupo H also owns and operates its own music academy, Rivas Music & Video, and founded and leads the nonprofit organization, Rivas Perdomo Family Foundation. You can listen to the Rivas Family on their radio show, “Alabando Al Señor con El Grupo H”, which is broadcast on Sundays on Radio Paz 830 AM and 96.1 FM and on www.paxcc. org. SHANNONTRIA BAND

ShannonTria is a trio from Miami Florida. The band includes Shannon Leah Mora (vocals), Ron Derrick (Guitar) and Mark Shroyer (Percussion). Formed in 2022 they play all of your favorite music of yesterday and today in their own acoustic renditions. Sing along to favorites by the Beatles, Elton John, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse and many more classics. From old to new, from Rock to Country to Pop to Jazz and everything in between there is something for everyone to enjoy. Loud enough to get your feet tapping, yet low enough to still enjoy nice conversations with your friends and family- the perfect mix to make it a memorable evening. MARCO BARRIOS

Marco Barrios is a Miami-raised Venezuelan-U.S. singer-songrwriter that has performed throughout South-Florida for the past five years. He has specialized in performing standards from the Great American Songbook as popularized by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé as well as standards from the Latin American repertoire. He has performed in venues including the Biltmore Hotel, The Ray Hotel, the Bath Club, and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as both as a solo performer and with a variety of ensembles. In June 2023 under his birth name of Marco Antonio Barrios he released his first single, “Three-Course Love,” which is a medley comprised of some of his favorite songs. His biggest musical inspirations are Billy Joel and Joe Hisaishi.

TONY & THE KINGS

Tony & the Kings are Antonio Rivera on vocals, guitar, and percussion; Danny Naval on congas and percussion; Eddie Garcia Jr. on drums; Matt Pyatt on bass; Robert Smiley on saxophone and Austin Muthyala on trumpet. Tony leads the band with his high energy and playful Spanglish soul in true Miami fashion. The bass, congas, and drums blend perfectly, driving a latin rhythm. Horn lines rip synchronized melodies for the classic live big band feel. Tony & the Kings bring new Miami Latin styles that reflect the band’s Caribbean roots while remaining grounded in the group’s funk and soul foundations. Boogaloo, Latin Soul, Son, Afro-Funk… These are just some of the styles you will hear on their records and at their live shows.

Rocking the 80s with Boys Don’t Cry Tribute Band. People love the 80s, the pop/new wave sound of bands like The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Clash, Tears for fears, The Cars, Duran Duran and much more? so, you’re in for a treat! We are Boys Don’t Cry, an 80s alternative tribute band that plays the most iconic songs from that awesome decade. Boys Don’t Cry 80’s Alternative Tribute Band Miami South Florida based. Eighties Alternative/New Wave Rock Cover Band created by 4 professional musicians with an amazing sound.

ZACH BARTHOLOMEW BAND

Dr. Zachary Bartholomew is an award-winning pianist, composer, and music educator who maintains a highly active performance career as one of the most heavily sought-after pianists, accompanists, and sidemen in all of Florida. In both 2016 and 2017, he placed as one of the top three finalists in the highly acclaimed Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and every year since 2021 has been awarded the prestigious “Artist Performance on Tour’’ grant from the state of Florida for his “Jazz Access Tour,” an outreach program that aims to provide underserved communities and schools in Florida with world-class public performances and educational programs.

Zach has headlined at some of the top jazz venues and performing arts centers in the country and has been featured at national and international jazz festivals including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, St. Petersburg Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Jalisco Jazz Festival, and Festival Miami. He has performed with artists such as Sean Jones, Victor Goines, Dave Holland, David Liebman, Ira Sullivan, Carmen Bradford, Byron Stripling, and Dan Miller. Additionally, he is a fulltime music professor at Florida Memorial University, a Resident Artist at Arts Bonita, the pianist for the Gulf Coast Jazz Collective, and performs regularly with professional organizations such as the Sarasota Pops Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, and the Lake Wales Jazz Connection.

CANNIBAL KIDS

Riding the success of their albums Bloom & deadheads, Cannibal Kids have garnered millions of streams and thousands of fans worldwide and across the net. Rooting South Florida, Damian Gutierrez (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Dustin Diaz (lead guitarist) and Luke Faulkingham (Drums) have proven themselves to be excellent songwriters, competent producers, and show stopping performers. Gathering major support in Miami with their refreshing tropical-pop sound, enthralling vocal melodies, infectious guitar riffs, and dancey grooves they’ve left their impact on the music scene and beyond. After getting signed to Shaemax Records in 2016, the band has put out several hit singles like “Troubled Mind”, “Love Girl” and “Voicemail” which have all peaked on college radio and streamed millions of times collectively. The band has been on nationwide tours, shared the main stage with the likes of Young the Giant, Knox Hamilton, Chelsea Cutler and many more. The demand for their shows has only increased over time, selling out Florida performances seven times in the last two years.

Inspired by Japanese City Pop, jazz, indie and alternative-rock such as Kero Kero Bonito, Hiroshi Sato, Astrud Gilberto and Junko Ohashi, Cannibal Kids have been able to find a unique tone that thrives off of high energy and groovy tunes.

Cannibal Kids are moving up and have no intention of stopping. 2024 will be full of new music, videos and online content.

CLAUDENS LOUIS & THE CIEL EXPERIENCE

The CieL Experience combines the styles of R&B, swing, hip-hop, and traditional Haitian music, rooted in the harmonies and improvisation of the American jazz tradition. Saxophonist and band leader, Claudens Louis, explores the infinite possibilities of these genres by using the different backgrounds, cultures and influences within the group to present fresh compositions and arrangements accessible to a wide range of listeners. Each piece is a personal extension of their soul and tells a story.

Vivian Valls

Vivian Valls, also known as ViVi, is a Miami born-and-raised vocalist and songwriter. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, she is bringing her talents back home with a fresh take on grooves you’re bound to know and love. Influenced by the likes of Amy Winehouse and Beyoncé, her performance style can be described as vibrant and soulful. Alongside guitarist and great friend, Steven Shapiro, they strive to capture the ears of their audience— playing your pop, R&B, rock and jazz favorites.

ASHLEY PEZZOTTI

New York vocalist and composer Ashley Pezzotti discovered her love for music when her Dominican father would sing her classic Spanish songs to sleep. She began taking voice lessons at only 4 years old, and in 2018 she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music with a full tuition scholarship. In the spring of 2019, Ashley participated in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program where she gained invaluable mentorship by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Moran and Marcus Printup. She is also a 2021 alumni of Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Woodshed Network program.

Just in her 20’s, Ashley has performed with renowned artists such as Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, Arturo Sandoval, Joey Alexander, Dave Holland, Jon Secada, and country star Keith Urban. She has also performed as a leader at prestigious venues such as Birdland Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club, Blue Note Jazz Club, The Jazz Showcase, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, Stockholm Concert Hall, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Her 2019 encouragingly titled album “We’ve Only Just Begun” features an array of original compositions inspired by the Great American Songbook. She is accompanied by renowned musicians such as Emmet Cohen on piano, Alex Weitz on tenor sax, Kyle Poole on drums and Bob Bruya on bass. Ashley is featured on Wynton Marsalis’ 2020 album release on Blue Engine Records, The Ever Fonky Lowdown, along with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The album is a sweeping Marsalis suite that captures the artist’s insight on culture and society.

LEMON CITY TRIO

Lemon City Trio formed as a soul jazz organ trio, and has since evolved into a band with its own sound and unique repertoire. The band hails from Miami, Fl and has made a name for itself throughout the state, and up the east coast. Ranging from edgy fusion grooves, to dreamy space Rock, and everything in between, LCT takes its audience on a journey from start to finish.
