Nicole Bartholomew is a professor of contemporary voice and music theory at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, and she is also the Director of Education and Operations for My Music Match.Nicole is a musician of wide-ranging interests and educational backgrounds. She holds a B.M. in vocal performance and Spanish from St. Norbert College in her home state of Wisconsin and an M.M. in ethnomusicology from Florida State University. As an ethnomusicologist, Nicole is passionate about advocating for the musical and cultural practices of diverse peoples. As a vocalist and music educator, she thrives when she can instill a sense of excitement and curiosity about music and about learning in her students. She is currently a doctoral candidate working to complete her PhD in musicology from FSU.
The Musicians
FIU TRIO: Dereck Sanguino is a jazz guitarist currently studying at FIU completing his Bachelor’s of Music. He is accompanied by fellow students Calvin Gay on bass, and Victor Sanchez on drums, both pursuing their Bachelor’s and Master’s respectively. Toe three of them play in various school situations together, ranging from the school’s top jazz combo, to the Panthonics, which has been selected this year to represent the school at the Jazz Education Network. Together this dynamic trio brings an exciting repertoire of music skillfully executed by some of the school’s top musicians. southmiamiartfest.org
ZB TRIO: featuring pianist Zach Bartholomew, another Frost School of Music alumnus, he was chosen as one of five finalists to compete in the highly acclaimed Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and won 3rd place. Zach’s Debut Album, Out of This Town, can be purchased at zbtrio.com. Part of the time his trio will be joined by jazz musician Fernando Ferrarone. The Trio is rounded out by New York drummer Chris Garriga and Peruvian bassist Mario Cuba.

HAYDEN MAPEL: is a professional trombonist, arranger, composer, and educator based in South Florida. He is fluent in a wide range of musical styles and has performed for audiences around the world. He completed a Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Trombone Performance from the University of North Texas in 2013 and a Master’s of Music in Studio Music and Jazz Trombone Performance from the University of Miami in 2017.
MATTHEW STEVENS: is a passionate music teacher, born and raised in Miami, Florida. Currently, he teaches piano, saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari), flute, and clarinet and performs solo and in bands throughout Miami and South Florida. Starting his music education in elementary school, Matthew eventually graduated from the New World School of the Arts, and continued his professional education in music at Miami-Dade, Florida International University and Manhattan School of Music. Throughout his career, Mr. Stevens has competed in several competitions such as Essentially Ellington at Jazz at Lincoln Center with the New World School of the Arts, receiving 1st place. He has performed at nationally and internationally recognized venues throughout the US (Smalls Jazz Club, Birdland, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club). Matthew has also played in shows at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, American Airlines Arena, and the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for Telemundo TV broadcasts/Telemundo Center alongside recognized musicians Gloria Estefan, El Dasa, and Cnco.Matthew has professional experience in teaching lessons (of all ages and experience levels), solo and group performances, music entertainment and recording studios/producing.
