A Message from our President Welcome to our 36th annual South Miami Rotary Art Festival! We’re glad you’ve joined us as you search for those unique fine arts and crafts to take home. Be sure to enjoy the food and drinks in our Food Court/Beer Garden and our wonderful on-stage entertainment which will continue Saturday night until 8:00 PM. We’d like to thank our festival sponsors. By supporting our festival, you help us to fulfill our service mission. In our local community, we’ve supported organizations such as South Miami Drug-Free Coalition and South Miami Parks Department’s after-school tutoring, swimming education, and children’s nutritional programs. We also provide college scholarships to two local students at the New World School of the Arts. Globally, Rotary International and its partners have almost completed the relentless 31year mission of eradicating Polio worldwide. Wild poliovirus cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries then, to 33 reported cases in 2018. India, which was once the most Polio prevalent country in the world, has been Polio free for seven years! The efforts of Rotarians and their partners around the globe will pay off---we will soon have a world free of this crippling disease. Your participation at the Festival and awareness of our community’s needs helps us all to do well by doing good. 2020 — Our 36th annual Festival Our anxiously anticipated art festival is held annually on Sunset Drive in vibrant downtown South Miami. An estimated 24,000 patrons visited our last show. Profits from the event benefit local Rotary scholarships and other local and international projects. To learn more, visit our website: www.southmiamiartfest.org. When is the Festival? Saturday, February 22, 2020, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. open jam session until 8 p.m. in the Food Court/Beer Garden. Sunday, February 23, 2020, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Where is the Festival? On Sunset Drive (SW 72nd St) between US1 and Red Road (SW 57th Ave.). Getting there: If you’re driving or biking from the north, take US 1 south to Red Road (SW 57th Ave.) and turn left toward Sunset Drive. From the south take Old Cutler or US 1 north toward Sunset Dr. Or take the Metrorail. The station is right across US 1 from the festival. Parking: There is ample on-street parking, garages at Shops of Sunset Place, a City of South Miami garage on SW 58th Ct. north of 73rd St., and on SW 73rd St. across from Bellezza Spa as well as a lot on SW 73rd St. across from the rear entrance of First National Bank of South Miami. Rotary Drinks Booth: Rotary will be selling beer, wine, soft drinks, and water in the Food Court to benefit our charities. Please do not bring outside beverages into the festival. We appreciate your support of our Drinks Booth which stays open Saturday until 8 PM during the Jam Session. Recycling: Bins on every block and in the Food Court. Please use them for your cans and bottles. No food please.

Festival organizers reserve the right to decline admittance to anyone who violates the reasonable policies established for public safety and the right to restrict activities such as public address to designated areas.

Health and Wellness: South Miami Hospital’s booth will have health information as well as a First Aid station. You can find it at the Food Court, Sunset and 58th Avenue. Kids Zone: Just inside the Shops of Sunset Place you will find a quiet area of children’s activities. ATM locations and Credit Cards: Several banks on Sunset Drive have ATM’s, and all stores and most artists accept major credit cards. Security: South Miami Police are on site at all times including for overnight surveillance. Rotary volunteers have radio contact with Festival Headquarters at the First National Bank of South Miami and also with South Miami Police.. Lost and Found: Lost and Found is located in the First National Bank, 5750 Sunset Drive. After the festival, please call 305-769-5977 and leave a message. Rest Room facilities: Accessible portable units, including hand-washing stations, are located on SW 58 Ave. in the municipal parking lot behind Dr. Smood. Ample signs direct you. Festival Rules: No solicitation by commercial or nonprofit groups is allowed. Riding skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, scooters, or having large signs or placards which may endanger or inconvenience the public are prohibited.

ON THE STAGE Two well-known groups joined by two individual artists will be appearing at the February 22 & 23, 2020, 36th annual South Miami Rotary Arts Festival. University of Miami Frost School of Music alumnus Greg Byers Trio returns again this year performing a blend of his original compositions, classic pop/R&B, and contemporary favorites Byers not only performs but is also a recording artist, educator and composer. His debut EP Some Dark, Beautiful Morning brought together his skills as composer, music engineer and businessman. It can be purchased online at gregbyers.bandcamp.com The trio will be the backing band for an open jam session for any musicians interested in sitting in Saturday evening from 6 - 8 pm in the festival beer garden. The drinks booth will remain open so plan to stay for pre-dinner drinks, music, and enjoyment. The ZB Trio featuring pianist Zach Bartholomew, another Frost School of Music alumnus, he was chosen as one of five finalists to compete in the highly acclaimed Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and won 3rd place. Zachâ€™s Debut Album, Out of This Town, can be purchased at zbtrio.com. Part of the time his trio will be joined by jazz musician Fernando Ferrarone. The Trio is rounded out by New York drummer Chris Garriga and Peruvian bassist Mario Cuba. Fernando Ferrarone is a native of Miami who was a member of the 2013 and 2014 GRAMMY jazz bands, received a YoungArts Merit Award, amongst many other awards, attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship and is currently a member of the Denis Noday Jazz Orchestra and Raices Jazz Orchestra here in Miami. Jeff Zavac has been a part of the South Miami Rotary Art Festival for many years. Zavac has a style unlike any other sax player, with one added twist, he was born blind. The legendary Henry Stone of TK Records fame brought in Gwen McCrae and her daughters (The Creaetts ) to sing background vocals using a very unique arrangement style. Judges Judges selected by the festival committee are chosen for their varied backgrounds and experience in diverse art disciplines. This guarantees that the work of our exhibitors is always in good hands. The winners of this year’s awards will be posted on the front door of show headquarters in the First National Bank of South Miami late on Saturday afternoon, February 22 at 4 PM. Profiled below are the judges for 2020. Carlos Enrique Gallostra is a representational artist and instructor based in Miami, Florida. Gallostra holds a B.F.A. from the New World School of the Arts, a conservatory in the heart of Downtown Miami which is affiliated with the University of Florida, as well as a M.F.A. and a M.S. from the Pratt Institute of New York. In addition, Gallostra furthered his studies in classical as well as contemporary approaches to figurative art at various ateliers, academies, and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. As an instructor, Gallostra teaches private clientele as well as several workshops and university courses, which establish a rigorous focus on figurative art and portraiture. His work can be found in several private and public collections. Terry Arroyo Mulrooney is an accomplished, award-winning watercolorist from Miami, Florida. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Terry has called South Florida home since early childhood and has been exhibiting and selling art since 2004. Her skills are mostly self-taught through reading and experimentation. She has taken various workshops and classes with nationally recognized watercolor artists. She specializes in the use of light and shadow to create a look of chiaroscuro in her paintings. She graduated from AEI (Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute) and MDC (with Honors) minoring in Educational Art. Mariela Corte has been a working artist for more than 12 years. A past president of the South Florida Jewelry Arts Guild, she is a Board member and chairs the Education Committee. She also belongs to the Florida Society of Goldsmiths. Her primary work is in metal work and wire weaving, but she has worked in Polymer Clay, Enamels and mixed media. Mariela has taken workshops with many prestigious national and international artists such as Mary Hettmansperger, Pauline Warg, Sam Patania, and more. She went to Paris and the south of France for a 2 weeks workshop on “Found objects”with Susan Lenat-Kazmer and Linda Larsen. and she enjoys teaching workshops herself at national shows and art societies.

Membership Note from our Membership Chair Since 1950, the Rotary Club of South Miami has been the lunchtime networking group for civic-minded business people and professionals in the South Miami, Kendall, and Pinecrest areas. Rotary’s unique blend of business networking and civic engagement has made it the largest service organization in the world with over 33,000 clubs worldwide and 1.2 million members who are committed to Service Above Self. We are a group of business and professional leaders who have come together to direct our energies and funds toward a common good. At the same time, we help generate business for one another so we can continue to grow and support our local communities. Rotarians are trustworthy business people as we follow our Four Way Test. While “social networking” has its place in business development, nothing supplants faceto-face relationships through business meetings and service events. If you’d like to find out more about how to join the premier networking club in the area, join us for one of our Tuesday meetings. On the 1st Tuesday of each month we meet for dinner at a local South Miami restaurant, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. On the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month we meet for lunch at the Elks Lodge, 6304 SW 78th Street, South Miami from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Additionally, we have an evening social event every 3rd Tuesday in South Miami at various locations so sign up for email notifications. Lower Back Pain as We Age: Treatment and Prevention Did you know that nearly 80 percent of people experience low back pain at some point in their lives? Understanding the causes, triggers and treatments for lower back pain can help keep you healthy and moving. According to the National Institutes of Health, the key risk factors include age, genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, job factors (heavy lifting or constant sitting) and being overweight. People who are not physically fit are more likely to experience back pain. However, most back pain stems from aging, the normal wear and tear on the spine. “The first attack of low back pain typically occurs between the ages of 30 and 50, and back pain becomes more common with advancing age,” the public health agency says. Even almost half of healthy, active people 60 and older experience some lower back pain as they age, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. The lower back includes five vertebrae (called L1-L5) in the lower spine or lumbar region, which supports most of your upper body weight. Discs –– round, rubbery, fluid-filled pads between the spaces in the vertebrae ––

act as shock absorbers throughout the spinal column cushioning the bones as the body moves. As people age, their discs begin to lose fluid and flexibility, leaving the vertebrae less protected, resulting in degenerative disc disease. An injured or weakened disc can lead to rupture or a herniated or “slipped” disc, putting pressure on the nerves and causing severe pain. These and other lower back conditions can often be improved with treatments, including physical therapy, medications, injections or a combination of these. If pain, impaired mobility and other symptoms do not get better over time, surgery may be recommended. However, you can help lessen or prevent lower back pain by correcting unhealthy habits such as poor posture, sitting hunched over a computer for hours and wearing high heels, which can cause poor posture, back problems and aggravate existing back pain. Replace strenuous exercising that can strain muscles with moderate workouts that include abdominal exercises and light weight lifting to strengthen your core and support your back.
