FIGHTING FOR BREATH Communities call for clean air

esidents, schools and organisations across south Leeds are joining a growing movement calling for and working towards better air quality in our communities.

Against the backdrop of events including the highprofile court case of Ella Kissi-Debrah (a nine year old Londoner whose death was arguably caused by air pollution), and national Clean Air Day each June, there is increasing awareness about the reality and effects of air pollution. Emissions from vehicles and industry – including gases like Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), and ‘particulate matter’ - are particularly held up to blame. And inevitably, urban communities suffer worst.

This largely invisible reality in our lives is closely linked with a wide range of serious health conditions, including cancer, asthma, COPD, heart disease, strokes, and more. The UK spends an estimated £16bn treating people for the health impacts of air pollution; and annually, over 28,000 Brits die prematurely because of it.

Here in south Leeds, we suffer some of the very highest rates of respiratory illnesses and heart disease, and lowest life expectancies, in the city – and it looks like we have a long way to go before seeing substantial change on air pollution.

As reported last autumn, most of LS10 and LS11 is set to be excluded from Leeds’ forthcoming Clean Air Zone – in which highly polluting vehicles will be charged to enter. The Council insist that – although pollution is high here – it isn’t illegally high, so central government and big business would block such a move.

However, following that disappointment, a new ‘South Leeds Alliance for Clean Air’ has now emerged. Their work includes a ‘Plants for People’ project (pictured) – aiming to get air-cleansing plants into every classroom in south Leeds. They are also working through the schools to boost local awareness and action, as well as looking to develop independent local air monitoring, work with residents groups on tree planting, and much more. Also in south Leeds, various schools and groups of residents are organising their own road closure events – in which streets are temporarily turned over to play or other neighbourhood activities. To organise your own road closure this summer, for free, call the Highways team on 0113 378 7506. These link with wider campaigns including one pushing for a monthly Car Free Sunday in Leeds city centre – a scheme that cities including Paris and Edinburgh have pioneered.

Meanwhile, Leeds City

Council and their partners are leading several campaigns, including one asking people not to ‘idle’- that is, to turn their car engines off when not moving, especially around schools. As yet, take-up amongst south Leeds schools has been low – but that is slowly changing.

Cllr James Lewis, executive member with responsibility for air quality, said: “We (the Council) are working hard to do everything we can to improve air quality – and when the Clean Air Zone does eventually come in, the benefits will be felt right across the city. Everyone in Leeds shares a responsibility

for cleaning the air. And there are lots of ways to do your bit: using the car less often, sharing journeys, turning off your engine when idling.”

I

t is hard to believe that the Beeston Festival has just celebrated its 25th year. Always a highlight of the summer, I swear it’s getting bigger every year.

Once again, the weather was kind and the crowds flocked into Cross Flatts Park to enjoy the music, delicious food and the many stalls representing an astonishingly diverse range of organisations from the Beeston Local History Society to local churches and from Beeston in Bloom to the Asha Neighbourhood Project.

By the time I got to the Health for All stand they had run out of their ever-popular fruit cups, so I went off to pedal myself a delicious smoothie. It was the least I could do in the interests of a balanced diet having succumbed earlier to the lure of a very large and very tasty double 99.

I first came to the Beeston Festival 20 years ago this year as a newly elected MP and I’ve only missed it twice since; once because I had to be abroad on ministerial business and the other time when I managed to break four of my ribs, which I really do not recommend.

And my memories of it are of countless summer days when the sun shone apart from the one year when it rained so hard that I had to seek shelter in the Leeds City Council library bus where I slowly dripped water onto the carpet from my sodden clothes.

So as we make a date for next year, I know that we would all like to express our grateful thanks to all the many people whose hard work and determination behind the scenes made it such a wonderful occasion once again.

As Members of Parliament we are pretty used to being asked probing questions, but I have to say that the Year 3 and Year 4 classes at Lane End Primary School really put me through my paces recently. They’d clearly done their homework and the questions were many and varied.

One of the more unexpected ones came from a boy who asked me what was in my pocket. So out came my red handkerchief and we then had a discussion about the various uses to which a hankie can be put which ended up with me knotting the four corners of it to show how you can wear it as a sun hat. I think there may be photographs! I really enjoyed my visit.

I had promised myself that I wouldn’t refer to the dreaded B-word (Brexit) in this column, but It’s hard to avoid as it continues to dominate politics.

There isn’t a single Member of Parliament who doesn’t know how this issue has divided the nation, just as it has Parliament which is deadlocked. We’re now in a state of suspended animation as the Conservative party leadership contest takes place which will decide the new Hilary Benn MP Prime Minister.

All I will say is that whoever wins will find the same House of Commons with the same views as was the case when Theresa May announced her resignation.

I have finally come to the view that the only way forward is to ask the people to confirm that they want to leave with the deal that actually has

been negotiated - Mrs May’s deal has divided opinion and there is no mandate from 2016 for no deal - or whether they want to change their mind and remain.

I know there will be many people who fundamentally disagree with this way out of the current mess, but we really can’t carry on like this.

HS2 rail viaduct proposed for Hunslet

roposals for HS2 in South Leeds continue to divide and dismay local residents after a public consultation at the Hunslet Club on Saturday 22 June.

It comes after the Department for Transport revealed earlier this month plans to construct a 3.3km viaduct to take the new railway through Hunslet and into the city centre from the village of Woodlesford.

Residents had the chance to examine several information documents, maps and visual representations of the proposals, while HS2 representatives were present to answer questions.

HS2 spokesperson Steven Smith said: “We’re keen that people have every opportunity to find out about it and respond to the consultation.

Walkers share their Fun in the sun at Beeston Festival faith and friendship B

eeston residents of different beliefs and backgrounds came together to promote unity by taking part in an afternoon of interfaith activities on Sunday 16 June.

The Walk of Friendship event, organised by Concord Interfaith Fellowship, saw participants congregate at Beeston Hill United Free Church before visiting the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha Gurdwara and finishing at Jamia Masjid Abu Huraira Mosque.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Eileen Taylor, began the event in the presence of local councillors and religious leaders and expressed her pride at the unity on display.

“The more we know of each other culturally the better it is to work together and appreciate each other more,” she said.

“We share, interact and make it easier for the younger generation to know they need to respect each faith and culture.

“As the Lord Mayor of Leeds, seeing all the different cultures and faiths here today makes me feel so proud.”

“Leeds is a diverse city and we shouldn’t be separated. We should be united and this is what today is saying.”

Participants were able to explore the history of Beeston Hill United Free Church and speak with volunteers before beginning the walk.

Minister Godfrey Nicholson said he was “very happy that bridges are being built in a world where there are so many divisions.”

Tarlokh Singh, a member of the Gurdwara’s congregation, said: “It’s been brilliant to welcome so many people from different backgrounds – that’s what it’s all about.

“Many people weren’t aware of what a Sikh Gurdwara is, what the etiquettes are, what it’s like inside. A lot of them have seen the building from the outside as Rington’s Tea and they’ve never been in, so for them it was a great experience.

“You’ve got to think local to also think global. If you do things right at a local level it will cascade.”

Beeston and Holbeck Councillor Andrew Scopes added: “It’s a great opportunity to express our friendship despite our religious differences.

“It’s valuable to show solidarity and friendship with each other. Everyone is happy; I’m really positive and excited about how many people have turned up.”

The walk ended at Jamia Masjid Abu Huraira Mosque, with participants having the opportunity to ask questions about Islam and finish the event with refreshments.

“This is the reality of humanity,” Mahbub, the vice-chair of the mosque, emphasised. “Even in this day and age, there are lots of examples where people put their differences aside and focus on commonalities.

“The only unfortunate thing is that you don’t hear a lot about it.

“There’s lots of good things happening in the community but you don’t hear about them in the media, so it’s a fantastic opportunity where people come together and there’s a genuine sense of friendship.”

his Beeston Festival was their 25th anniversary and it was bigger and better than ever. I have lived in Beeston for over 15 years and have attended most of them but this year really topped them all.

The event is incredibly well organised and planned. The food stalls were amazing – choices from biriyani to jerk chicken, pizza, hotdogs, vegan brownies you name it! There were free games and activities for children, all sorts of information and charity stalls and fun for every member of the family.

The music provided by the Foxes Faux (amongst many others) was fabulous and the Big Sing performing Lean on Me was truly inspiring.

For me though, the Punjabi Roots Academy stole the show. The drumming, singing and high-energy dancing really got the crowd going. It was wonderful to see lots of small children trying to imitate their elaborate moves. I wouldn’t have imagined this style of music would have worked particularly well with brass instruments but it was an inspired music mash-up and the audience for their show was huge and very enthusiastic.

Stalls included cupcakes, sweets, Beeston in Bloom with their bargain plant sale, saris and bangles, tombolas and toys. You could have your hand painted with mehndi or your face and hair adorned with environmentally friendly glitter.

Sam’s Safaris brought their exotic animals and there were also donkey

rides and alpacas to pet.

The den-building was popular as was the climbing wall and many brave children were zorbing.

Alan Binnit attended, a bin that burps out bubbles to repay you for depositing your waste – a fabulous idea from Leeds Recycles and Zero Waste Leeds.

The West Yorkshire police came along, cue lots of children wearing heavy looking police outfits. I overheard one young lad saying to his Dad “You’ve got some handcuffs at home, haven’t you Dad?” Perhaps the less said about that the better…

Local MP Hilary Benn attended, pedalling a bike to create a smoothie with Aspire SBS (great people supporting adults with learning disabilities). Then he was off for an NHS check up at their stall.

Leeds Mobile Libraries came along with their big, beautiful bright yellow bus and there was spoken word poetry from Toria Garbutt and Matt Abbott.

Beeston Local History Society had a stall and had copies of their book Notes From Old Beeston on sale – apparently including a gruesome history of one of our old pubs.

The fairground went, well like a fair!

Huge thanks to the organisers and volunteers who do such a sterling job year after year. I imagine it takes them a year to recover.

To me Beeston Festival celebrates the multicultural nature of our town (and wider city) and is a shining example of what we can achieve when communities work hard together. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Landlord licensing set to go ahead in Beeston Hill

C

ouncillors are set to approve the introduction of mandatory licensing of all private landlords operating in the Beeston Hill area.

In a report to the Council’s Executive Board, meeting on 26 June, officers argue that the scheme will be beneficial to tenants improving standards of accommodation and safety as well as reducing antisocial behaviour.

Landlords have argued vigourously that the scheme will be counter productive. They claim the charge of £825 will be added to rent as a “Tenants Tax.”

South Leeds Life recieved uncomfirmed reports of some landlords exerting pressure on their tenants to oppose the measure in the recent consultation.

The report notes that whilst residents commenting in person at the Dewsbury Road Community Hub were largely in favour of the scheme, online responses were more hostile. Analysis revealed that there were multiple responses from single IP addresses, which indicates that they were completed from a single property.

In the overall returns for the online electronic

questionnaire, 121 IP addresses were used to complete 3 or more questionnaires, which accounted for 826 responses out of the total 982 responses from the Beeston residents’ responses. One IP address was responsible for 55 responses.

Tahran Ali, a local resident and member of the 300+ strong Leeds Landlord group campaigning against selective licensing told South Leeds Life: "We're disappointed the Council are pushing ahead with this unwarranted and clunky proposal. Many local people (tenants, landlords,

local businesses and others) are against it. We do not believe licencing in this manner has any real benefit for our communities - this scheme will see rents soar, and achieve very little.

“Without greater investment and funding, selective licensing is just a tenant tax. We've an alternative proposal - that's smarter, more resource efficient and more collaborative - that we're asking the Council and national government to consider."

If approved the scheme, which will affect half of the 6,400 properties in the area will come into effect on 6 January 2020.

Young ladies show their cookery skills

would firstly like to introduce myself, my name is Lucy Leadbeater and I am the Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for South Leeds.

I have worked in Leeds District for a 16 years and the majority of my service has been in the East of the city working in various operational roles including working as a Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant covering Harehills and the Inner East area of the city.

For the past year I have worked with Safer Leeds and this role involved supervising and developing police officers who work in schools across the city as well as our Youth Justice Officers and the Strategic Engagement Officers.

My main passion in policing is working with communities through Neighbourhood Policing and I was thrilled when I was successful in applying for this role in March this year.

Since I have started my new role I have been very busy getting to know the different communities and meeting both residents and partners who are working within this area. It has been a real pleasure meeting people and seeing the fantastic work being done each day. I am very much looking forward to continuing to meet people and feel privileged that this is a big part of my role.

am asked about at communities meeting is the most appropriate method of contacting the police. he Beeston Young Ladies Cooking Club recently held their showcase event which was a great success and benefit for the young ladies who are aged 11-15.

After recently securing funding from Touchstone and receiving donations from various Uncles and other sources in the community the club held a twenty-week course of cookery lessons. This gave the young ladies opportunities to learn and grow, ultimately showing off these learnt skills at the showcase event.

The girls stepped out of their comfort zone and cooked a variety of Gambian dishes for the gathered crowd. They chose Gambian food as a way of sharing their cultures and backgrounds. Their parents hailed from Gambia and the club believe in diversity, accepting and sharing cultural differences.

Leeds is a very diverse area with rich cultural history and backgrounds close together. It is always wonderful to see these communities and vast array of cultural heritages celebrated and shared.

Fanta Sanneh originally came up with the idea as boys play football at the weekend and the girls were left behind bored so cookery lessons would both help with the boredom and allow the girls to

Many of the girls came to the project fresh and without a knowledge of cooking. The new life skills they learnt from this project will stay with the girls forever and can be passed onto other people to further extend the reach of this project.

Perhaps in the future a similar project could run again reaching more young girls in the community who find themselves bored in their spare

time or would like to learn new life skills which will benefit themselves and those around them.

The showcase event, held at Beeston’s Hamara Centre, ran smoothly and was well attended featuring speeches from various people extending a genuine outpouring of openended gratitude that the project was funded and enabled to run so successfully.

Following the speeches

dinner was served with further speeches from Councillor Paul Wray and Bampha Jaiteh, Chairman of Gambia Welfare Society Leeds who worked with Yanks Sawo to co-ordinate the project.

Finally, to show further gratitude there was a presentation of flowers and cards to the mentors: Ajie Fatou Jeng Secka, Fatoumata Bah Sawo and Amie Kolly Darboe Sawo.

The Middleton Railway has been able to send this covered van, known as a PALVAN, away to specialist contractors for a full overhaul and return to service. The wagon was burned out and all its contents destroyed in last years fire at the adjoining Jewson timber yard.

Art in the right place Upgrading Trentham Park

e’s not the first to ask, but a local community member was recently asking on social media: what is art?

Art gallery stuff: yes. Pretty things that people create everywhere: probably. The scrawlings that our kids all bring home from school: who’s to say? Then what about graffiti..?

Local people are currently (but not for the first time) riled by a recent spate of ‘tagging’.

Tagging is when someone repeatedly spray-paints a name or nickname, on walls and surfaces, around a community.

The current ‘artist’ doing the rounds goes by the name of ‘MOUSE’: his or her scrawlings (art?) are to be seen in dozens of places around south Leeds.

And quite a lot of people don’t like it: they don’t feel it adds anything, they don’t seem to think it’s art. To quote one (lovely and very level-headed) local resident: "I want to cut his bloody hands off". I don’t think she was being entirely serious but she’s bothered.

An old friend of mine argues that tagging is a cry or splurge

of self-expression – and that makes it OK. Well, yes to self expression – but surely not if it has a negative impact on, the lives of others. An equivalent might be someone creating music: great, just as long as they’re not banging it out at 3am, keeping the neighbours awake.

You’re never going to please everyone: I know someone who was outraged by the (Councilcommissioned) mural at Kirkgate Market, which most people love. And there are authorised public murals that I think are rubbish. But can we agree: our communities would benefit from more art?

I see blank walls everywhere – and every one of them is a piece of art waiting to happen.

Murals or pictures that might each day inspire or lift local people, or make them smile.

That’s why a bunch of us locally have set out, starting this summer, to create murals across south Leeds (pictured).

We’d love to work with others on this long-term project. Do you have a prominent wall you’d donate to us? Could you gather local people in a neighbourhood to share ideas

and create something together – with us if you need, or just crack on? Or are there schools or groups who want to join in (we’ve already got one signed up)? It needn’t cost much at all, if people share their time. And we’ve got some big projects in our sights too – like the creation of murals along the sides of the Inner Ring Road under the city.

And maybe we could work with some of the taggers – if they’re reading this, please get in touch! A few years ago, in Seacroft, they were really battling with tagging – but the fantastic LS14 Development Trust tracked down the perpetrators, and brought in some professional graffiti artists to work with them, and together created some topclass local murals. And the tagging stopped.

Let’s do this: let’s get creative, and make south Leeds even more beautiful than it already is.

PS We know that our latest mural has been defaced and we will fix it. And if it’s defaced we’ll fix it again because we believe we are brightening our neighbourhoods.

pgrade work on Trentham Pocket Park in Beeston Hill has begun, which will add new playground equipment for local children.

I know how important a safe and clean environment is for young children to play in, and the improvements planned for the park have been long request of parents.

Work should be completed on site by the end of June and the new playground equipment will be a great addition. Cllr Nash, Cllr Wray and I were more than happy to agree to the funding for these upgrades.

The Friends of Trentham Park have done much to improve the planting and green spaces in the already; making it a more inviting place for local people.

We are also planning to support the Friends and residents tackle the blight of dog-fouling with the employment of a new local Civic Enforcement Officer, whose duties will include making sure dog-fouling rules are followed.

This is only one of a range of

greenspace and playground investments due over the next 12 months in Hunslet and Riverside Ward, with upgrades due to the greenspaces at Brickfields and Rowland Road Pocket Parks, Hunslet Moor, Church Street Playground, and

funds allocated for future upgrades at Pepper Road and Hunslet Lake Parks.

We know your greenspaces and playgrounds matter to you, and we will keep looking always we can secure invest in them now and in the future.

ongratulations to Sadhia Ali from Beeston, who now works for the England and Wales Cricket Board as Programme Executive for Leeds.

Her role involves delivering the All Stars Cricket programme, which gets five-toeight-year-olds to play for one hour a week over eight weeks, and encouraging parents and volunteers to lead the sessions.

Programme centres in Beeston include Dewsbury Road Community Hub and the

Hamara Centre.

Sadhia says her aim is to engage more women, especially from South Asian backgrounds, with cricket.

“People don’t understand how much there is for women in sports. I want to change people’s views,” she said.

“I have actually changed a few parents’ views, where they’ve been like, ‘My girls don’t do cricket, it’s a man’s sport.’ But they’ve actually enjoyed it and changed their view on it now.”

ouncillors took the opportunity of the Inner South Community Committee to raise a host of issues with a senior officer from Leeds City Council’s Highways department at their meeting on Wednesday 12 June.

Poor communications from officers was a recurring theme in the discussion. Cllr Kim Groves complained that the simplest request for information took weeks to be responded to.

Cllr Elizabeth Nash said she regularly had to escalate queries to senior officers: “Do I have to go to the Chief Executive every time just to get an answer?” she asked.

Cllr Paul Wray explained that Councillors are the public face of the Council and that the lack of information reflected badly on the whole organisation.

A range of specific issues were discussed: Cllr Judith Blake raised issues caused by the historic street layout not being designed for widespread car ownership and asked about moves to minimise the ‘school run’ by investing in safe walking and cycling routes to schools.

• replacing grass verges with tarmacked parking bays is effective but expensive • the Active Travel team can support schools, but require the school to take the lead • most schools are within 20 mph zones, so walking is a safe option, but parents not turning their engines off (idling) near school causes a significant pollution problem Cllr Paul Truswell asked about traffic calming saying that the small speed bumps were not effective and suggested that developers should be required to install full width platforms on all new estates.

A new ‘growth manager’ with a complete focus Inner South businesses and social enterprises was one of the main suggestions to support job growth and training in the area.

Working with 90 local businesses over a 30-month period, the half-time post would provide intensive assistance to and create a new job for 45 of the businesses by March 2023.

Eighteen businesses would receive intensive assistance within the first seven months of funding.

The project would potentially take up £9,000 of the health and wellbeing budget for the next five years, but Councillors only approved the first year’s allocation of £3,000 from each ward.

Environmental Enforcement Officer for the Beeston & Holbeck and Hunslet & Riverside wards, costing £14,000 from each ward’s budget.

The position would enforce rules relating to dog fouling, littering and parking together with the Cleaner Neighbourhoods Team based on a previous example of the role in Morley. Additional income generated from fines will come back to the Area Committee.

In relation to social issues, £8,000 of funds are to be safeguarded for the Holbeck and Beeston Hill Priority Neighbourhoods.

The 2019/2020 Wellbeing Budget also ring-fenced funding for several cultural and social activities, with £11,000 reserved to support the Holbeck Gala and Beeston Festival.

In addition, £4,000 was earmarked for the Friends of Middleton Park and over £20,000 for Christmas lights in the three South Leeds wards.

The next Inner South Community Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 4 September at The Holbeck club at 7pm.

Community gardening project flourishes L

ast month Beeston residents joined forces with staff from First Direct bank in Stourton, rolled up their sleeves, and got stuck into some community gardening together.

The ten-strong group tidied up the community garden outside the unused Holy Spirit church on Tempest Road, and planted new fruit bushes. They also tackled the bed at the end of nearby Maud Avenue, which features a large proportion of edible plants and bushes. And they replanted some of the garden outside the Hillside Centre on Beeston Road – with fruit plants and bushes, and a range of herbs.

Ed Carlisle, who coordinated the day, commented: “We’ve been working on this local edible gardens scheme for the past few years, and it’s modest, but we’re looking to grow it. The vision is for every

eeds Music Trust, based at Old Chapel Studios in Holbeck, announce a new Music and Emotional Wellbeing project named BringingItAllBackHome.

The project lead Tony Lambert has been in Leeds for over 25 years and in that time he has been either a musician or a mental health worker, and now he’s both at the same time.

The project has come up with a new and exciting course for the people of Leeds.

“We want to give people a space to build, eat and play together” says Tony, believing in the philosophy that if you give people a safe space to express themselves, and value and respect them, then the opportunities for change and personal growth are heightened.

And so … Soup’N’Uke is born.

It’s a 10 week course where people can come together to build a Ukulele, learn to play a Ukulele, and, to eat soup. The first course begins at Old Chapel Studios on 8 August and will run each Thursday from 2pm-5pm until 10 October. The cost of the course is £50.

Award fot Holbeck Neighbourhood Plan Dennis Kitchen attended the Institute of Architects in London on 4 June to collect an award on behalf of the Holbeck Neighbourhood Plan group. Holbeck were joint winners of the Award for Neighbourhood Planning.

Campus name change Leeds College of Building’s Hunslet Campus has now taken on a new name – South Bank Campus.

Located between Cudbear Street and Black Bull Street, the first phase of the Campus was opened in 2015. Work has now completed on the second phase of the site – a modern £13m, four-storey building with bespoke classrooms, technical workshops, and an impressive central atrium.

Recycling and Do you know who’s taking Energy Facility away your rubbish?

aving been out with the bin men in Cottingley, I was keen to see what happens to the rubbish they collect.

I got the opportunity to have a tour of the Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (which is the massive building with a shiny roof you can see in the distance as you travel down Dewsbury Road towards town) – it is the destination of all the black bin waste across Leeds.

Its main purpose is to incinerate waste and capture the energy produced (in the form of electricity and heat).

The facility also sorts the waste, prior to incineration, to remove some of the recyclable materials which we’ve put in our black bins.

I arrive at the imposing looking building and am taken up to the 7th floor visitor centre. After a safety video (and test!) I start to learn about the facility. What it does is mind boggling. It can process over 50 tonnes of waste an hour (24/7), of which over 20 tonnes can be burnt per hour, producing around 11 Megawatts of power which is fed into the National Grid.

Once the furnace is ignited, extra fuel is not typically needed, the ash from the burnt waste is sent off to be used for building materials (such as roads) and the gases released when burning are thoroughly cleaned before being released into the atmosphere.

Impressively, the process that is used to clean the gasses released produces an alkaline product which is treated off site at a facility which uses it to neutralise acidic waste, making the facility as close to 0% waste as possible.

The tour starts by going down to the control room, which is manned 24/7. You can see into the pit which is where waste is held before it goes into the incinerator. There is a grabber that is like a supersized arcade machine, except that it can pick

up 6 tonnes!

In the control room there were all sorts of displays and screens monitoring the process of burning waste, the heat in the furnace (that has to remain above 850 degrees), and the quality of the steam leaving the building through the stack.

I was struck by how smoothly everything ran, how quiet it was, how the smell was ok, not what I expected at all. This is a clean and well run facility.

Along the way the waste is shifted and sorted, with infrared sensors to separate off recyclable materials (which are sent to another facility) and broken down in size so that it burns well.

As we finish the tour back on the 7th floor, we come out by the green wall which is some 30 meters high and 125 meters wide, which adds a much softer, gentler feel to the building.

The amount of waste we produce as a city is enormous, the challenge for all of us is to reduce the amount we produce (which is easier said than done). Lots of it from sources which surprised me, for example the most recent analysis showed that food waste could be as much as 30% of the content of Leeds’ black bin waste (a clear indication of the need for food waste collections in Leeds).

The waste management plans of Leeds needs to continue to move forward and the amount of waste we recycle clearly needs to increase, however processing our waste through this facility rather than sending it to landfill is a huge step forward.

The facility is only in its fourth year of operation and there are plans to use the energy it produces even more effectively (for example through the planned district heating scheme) and I look forward to hearing about future developments of this facility and inputting into the Leeds recycling plans.

outh Leeds residents are being warned to make sure they arrange for registered waste collectors to remove any household rubbish from their property otherwise they may find themselves with a fine.

Earlier this year the government agreed to give local authorities the power to issue fixed penalty notices to householders whose waste is illegally fly tipped because knowingly or not the householder has allowed an unauthorised person to take it away and it has been flytipped.

In Leeds the new rules came into effect from June 2019.

Local authorities already have powers to prosecute householders for this type of activity.

However, these prosecutions are costly for the regulators and for the court, and leave the householder with a criminal record which in some cases seems too severe.

The new powers to issue fixed penalty notices will mean that if a householders waste has been found to have been disposed of illegally they could receive a fine of £200 (or £150 if paid within 10 days) Councillor Mohamed Rafique, Leeds City Council

waste to be flytipped and to help identify the people they see committing this crime, we can all achieve so much more to help keep Leeds clean.”

If you are getting rid of large items in good condition, why not give it to a charity such as SLATE or St Luke’s CARES who will collect the item at no charge.

The Council will collect up to four large items that cannot be reused for £20.

If you do pay someone to take away your waste, ALWAYS: • Ask to see their waste carrier licence, or check online

using the Environment Agency’s website at environment.data.gov.uk/ public-register • Pay by card or bank transfer and get a receipt or waste transfer note • Note the registration number of the vehicle that collects your waste • Ask where they are taking the waste to dispose of it A genuine waste carrier will not mind you asking these questions and will always provide you with a proper receipt. If in doubt, do not allow anyone to take your waste.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Eileen Taylor was the guest of honour as Trinity Network celebrated 45 years of serving older people from their Dewsbury Road base on 6 June. As it was also the 75th anniversary of D-Day there was a 1940s theme to the day with wartime songs, a display of period household goods and a discussion of members’ wartime memories after lunch.

The Big Bike Fix – can you help?

his summer sees the launch of a new project in south Leeds, called the Big Bike Fix. It’s for people to hold small events in their neighbourhoods, to work together to fix up one another’s bicycles. Is this something you’d like to see happen where you are?

The idea is that loads of us have bikes that need simple fixes: punctures to patch, brakes to tighten, handlebars or seats to tighten, chains to oil, and so on. A fairly wide range of regular people can do these fixes, without super powers or specialist tools.

If it works, the project will see

a series of simple events happening this summer across LS10 and LS11 – in public spaces like parks and streets, or maybe hosted by local organisations or clubs. After some simple neighbourhood advertising (like posters and social media), local volunteers will turn up on a given day, with basic tools, and help fix up the bikes of anyone who comes.

Drinks, snacks or cakes might also be offer, or other extras, if locals make it happen.

Local resident and campaigner Ed Carlisle, who is helping to coordinate the scheme, commented: “Cycling’s a great way to save money, get healthy, and have a laugh – but loads of us have old bikes that need some TLC. However, the good news is that most fixes aren’t difficult – and, as we’ve seen with projects like

the Repair Cafe, some people love fixing stuff! This is an experiment, it will depend on people making it happen where they are – but it needn’t be complicated, and it could be amazing”.

The coordinators will aim to link up people to work together on these mini events – and offer whatever advice and support they need.

Modest amounts of cash are available if need be, but participants can also contribute by printing posters, baking cakes or bringing drinks, donating spare bike parts, and more. If the project is a success, the organisers hope to repeat and expand it in future years.

rs Beeston’s Cookbook, reported in South Leeds Life in March, aims to capture the rich diverse cuisines of south Leeds.

Contributing to the blog requires sending your recipes via email, however not everyone can access the internet, or has an email address, so the opportunity to meet people face to face and share their recipes became available when Leeds library hosted the event on Tuesday 21 May 2019 at Beeston Library.

Community librarian Rachel Benn supported the event around Rhyme Time; a popular preschool activity, and also a senior ladies fitness group who had ended their walk with settling in the library for a chat.

The idea that stories of food can be shared brings people together as much as eating the food itself. Lucy Potter who works at St Luke’s CARES charity shop brought in an original Mrs. Beeton’s book from a recent house clearance, and encouraged people to look at the wonderful illustrations, talk and share their recipes including and most importantly the story behind them.

Beeston had seen the event advertised and brought a photocopied typewriter sheet of paper showing her ‘Mars Bar Pudding’ -listing the sugar laden ingredients. Susan says “No family gathering was ever authentic without it!”

Hyacinth Gregory shared (dictating from memory); ‘Plain Mans Souffle’ a mashed potato and cheese (with egg white) a savoury meal. Which was taken from Mother’s Union magazine over 50 years ago! Hyacinth say’s; “Always a good vegetarian option and cheaper than fish on a Friday.”

Agnes McKeating shared ‘Mary’s Easy Ginger Cake’ also dictated from memory. A recipe passed on from a friend. It is most delicious (gingery) and very easy to make.

The event lasted an hour with everyone getting ideas and meeting new people. Mrs Beestons Cookbook aims to write itself with your ideas and hopefully bring more people together in the community of south Leeds with eating the actual food itself, and who knows even a book – will your recipe be in it?

ne in ten Leeds residents will be affected by diabetes – either because they have it already or are at high risk of developing it. Tens of thousands more know someone with the condition.

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar) level to become too high, which can have serious health consequences. In Leeds, out of a population of around 800,000 people, approximately 44,000 people have diabetes, and a further 36,000 are at high risk of developing it.

People with African-Caribbean and South Asian ancestry are more than twice as likely develop the condition.

There are a number of types of diabetes, but the most common are type 2 and then type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 is where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. Approximately 10% of adults and 90% of children with diabetes will have type 1. At present, this type cannot be prevented.

Type 2 is where the body tissues don’t react to insulin properly and over time the body produces less insulin too; 90% of adults with diabetes have this type. For many people, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or significantly delayed by achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and by exercising regularly.

Dr Gordon Sinclair, Clinical Chair of NHS Leeds CCG, said: “There are several types of diabetes. Early symptoms can include feeling very thirsty, tired and experiencing blurred vision. Some people don’t have any symptoms, so if you’re in a high risk group for type 2 diabetes because of your ethnic background or your weight and lifestyle, it’s a good idea to talk to a health care professional.

“Diabetes can have serious health consequences; however with careful management, people with the condition can continue to lead full, healthy and active lives.”

Open Day at Holbeck Elderly Aid H

olbeck Elderly Aid (HEA) transformed the St Matthew’s Centre in Holbeck into a bustling vibrant open day showcasing the diverse and good work they do within the local community.

Although there are too many to name individually within the sea of people, there were various pockets of people eager to show what they do from the very calm wellbeing services to the dynamic dance demonstrations.

Matthew Springthorpe, who organised the day explained that HEA has a lot to offer the community. Perhaps most importantly of all they offer a lifeline to those who need it through their volunteers, they visit people in their homes or offer a listening ear over the phone. Volunteers are always sought after and even an hour or two out of your week could change to quality of life of older people in the surrounding area.

HEA were delighted be joined by Leeds Community Foundation for a few hours as part of their community engagement day. They brought along over 30 local business people who are interested in giving back to the community, to spread the word about community projects and organisations such as HEA. It

Join the Craft Group - open to anyone over 18 was great to see how involved everyone was. The visitors joined in with table tennis, the chair-based exercises and sharing a cuppa and a natter with local residents. It was great to see everyone coming together, meeting new people and having fun.

Alison Leason reminded me of the importance of looking after the most vulnerable people in society and discussed her work with carers and those with conditions such as dementia.

Carers can easily be overlooked and burn out quickly, but with the support of people such as Alison they can

access services to ensure their wellbeing is maintained and they are supported.

Anyone concerned that they might have dementia or have already been diagnosed can access services to help signpost them to relevant groups and services, or just have a good conversation about any concerns they might have.

As well as their outreach into the community HEA organises many trips out and about and there is a packed schedule of day trips on offer including a trip to the Donkey Sanctuary and Temple Newsham Farm later in the year. Most have

transport offered so please don’t let this be a barrier to you joining them!

Socially there are many groups to get involved in including a singing group. At the event I was met with some lovely ladies who explained they sing a variety of songs from Tom Jones to Pennies from Heaven and have had a CD compiled to showcase their singing.

Alongside this there was a demonstration from the craft group who showed me the fruits of their hard work, they have recently finished a series of pillowcases showing various places in Holbeck and a number of poppies there are making for the Remembrance Services later in the year. They were keen to let me know that adults of any age are welcome to attend their groups and to just get in touch if you’re interested.

Skippco have been working hard to teach local people how to use their cameras to a professional standard and the hard work has paid off. A variety of beautiful pictures were displayed showcasing the local area and small pockets where you might not usually tread. For example, inside a

local mechanics shop. Skippco are running a 20 week long programme and are aiming to compile a showcase of their work at the end of it.

As well as the established services they offer, HEA has also started a community project designed to help improve the health and wellbeing of local people.

I met with Ann and Amorine who talked me through the benefits of aromatherapy and the diverse uses of essential oils.

The duo have already held events including a curry night and fitness run and hope to expand their reach into the community and offer services such as bath bomb making, a film club and much more.

Health and wellbeing is important especially within Holbeck and to ensure there are no barriers to accessing their sessions they are looking into offering a creche facility and holding the events on an evening or weekend so if you’re over 16 watch this space!

After a short address from Hillary Benn MP, Patron of HEA, volunteers from SC Johnson helped to provide refreshments and a light lunch to everyone who attended.

Students create winning water bottle designs

outh Leeds students showed their bottle last week as they took part in an enterprise competition to create a brand new design for reusable water bottles – with the winning team’s design going on sale later this summer.

On Friday 14 June four schools from the local area took part in the final of the Made in South Leeds initiative, which aimed to introduce students to the skills and processes of advertising, marketing and business.

Crawshaw Academy were crowned the winners by a panel of expert judges following a competitive pitch presentation at Cineworld, Leeds. The winning students will now get the opportunity to sell their reusable aluminium water bottles at White Rose Shopping Centre later in the summer.

Over 50 local students from Cockburn School and Academies at Crawshaw, Woodkirk and Morley took part in the enterprise activity, which asked students to create a brand new logo and accompanying social media marketing campaign.

The initiative, organised by

White Rose owners Landsec, and in association with Ahead Partnership, aims to increase diversity in the retail and property industries, connect employers with education and teach local young people about different career opportunities.

Steven Foster, General Manager at White Rose Shopping Centre, said: “Advertising is all around us, so getting local students to create their very own designs and marketing campaign for such an important product as reusable water bottles has resulted in fantastic, creative and unique results – and we’d like to congratulate everyone who took part.

“At White Rose, we’re constantly considering how to better our environmental impact, so it’s been brilliant to see the students take such an interest in promoting the benefits and importance of reducing our consumption of single use plastic.”

This campaign comes alongside Landsec’s Refill Me initiative, which has seen countless stores throughout

White Rose display a sticker in their window, letting visitors know they can fill up their reusable water bottles for free, with no obligation to purchase.

Stephanie Burras CBE, Chief Executive of Ahead Partnership, said: “We have seen an increasing number of businesses taking action to address the single use plastic problem in recent months, and it’s fantastic that White Rose is committed to engaging the younger generation to educate them on global sustainability issues, whilst providing them with extremely valuable exposure to the workplace.

“The challenge was designed to improve key employability skills such as teamwork, presentation, communication and time management, whilst raising awareness of what a career in advertising, marketing or retail would entail. We look forward to seeing the students’ water bottles on the shelves later this year.”

The winning designs by Crawshaw Academy will go on sale in mid-July at White Rose Shopping Centre.

MC Grammar wow C

hildren from Cottingley Primary Academy took to the stage on Monday 24 June to perform live with MC Grammar, who has recently featured on BBC Breakfast, This Morning and The Ellen Show after going viral for rapping The Gruffalo while reading to his daughter.

The children are also participating in workshops by MC Grammar – otherwise known as award-winning teacher and English consultant JacobNicholas Mitchell.

Students from across the school participated in lively and skilful performances of MC Grammar hits The NOUN Song, The Antonym Song and The FANBOYS Song (on connectives “for, and, nor, but, or” and “yet”) among others.

ver 1,000 Yorkshire schoolchildren, including pupils from Low Road and New Bewerley primary schools, trod the boards last month as they appeared in the first ever performances of a new piece by Will Todd, one of the UK’s leading contemporary composers.

Wonderland Restored was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s enduring classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Based on the opera of the

same name which Will Todd wrote for Opera Holland Park in 2015, the work has been created especially for Opera North Big Sing to suit younger singers’ voices.

Pupils from six schools across Yorkshire appeared at St George’s Hall in Bradford to premiere the work on Thursday 13 June, with a further five schools giving a second performance the following day.

The 7 to 12-year-olds were joined by members of the Chorus

of Opera North, together with an ensemble of professional musicians including players from the Orchestra of Opera North.

Soprano Marie Claire Breen took the part of Alice and narrator, with Amy J Payne.

Stuart Laing, and James Davies from the Chorus bringing some of Carroll’s best-loved characters to life as Alice’s crazy adventures unfold on stage.

Cockburn John Charles students crack the code C

ockburn John Charles Maths students George Davies, Rhys Nunns, Xiao Yi Weng and Patrick Butuza have been working on a game design competition called 'Cracking the Code' as part of a Gifted & Talented Maths club.

After submitting their proposal to the judging panel they are among top 10 teams nationally and have been invited to the final in London on Thursday 27 June to present their idea to a panel of judges. If they win, the game will be produced and released online to schools all around the world on 'Mangahigh' an online Maths teaching platform .

Their game sees players compete to use co-ordinates to navigate mazes in order to crack a mathematical code word. Train travel to London is being kindly provided by the Academy's business partner, LNER. Head of School, Siobhan Roberts said “We are extremely proud that our students have been recognised for their ingenuity and imagination in planning and presenting their ideas on a national level. Whatever the outcome, the students competing in the final will gain an invaluable experience that will stay with them for years to come.”

“As well as staff training we have done lots of work on reading for pleasure, and parents have been part of this too. We have organised a ‘bedtime story day’, where children came to school in their pyjamas, and a ‘Superhero reading day’.

“Next week we are taking the children to the Philip Howard independent bookshop in Roundhay to buy some books for our new library.

“The book trip has been made possible through £500 funding, which I applied for through the Siobhan Dowd Trust to spend on books for our new library.”

The new Cottingley Primary Academy library has recently been built and will be opening with a launch event at the end of September.

Parents have also donated books, with donor stickers being placed in each book. Anyone who would like to support the campaign can do so by buying a book through the Amazon Wishist the school has set up.

MC Grammar explained the impact that reading books can have.

“I read lots of books and it’s

changed my life. Ten weeks ago, I read The Gruffalo to my daughter and posted the video on YouTube. Since then, I have been invited over to America to appear on The Ellen Show, and the video has now has a million views. If reading one book can change my life, just think what reading two, three, four or more books can do for yours!”

Speaking exclusively with Helen Robinson after the show, MC Grammar explained why he devised the Resilient Readers programme.

He quoted a recent Department for Education (DfE) poll, which found that 300,000 toddlers have never been read a nursery rhyme by their parents.

“As well as working with schools, I run rap workshops in prisons and detention centres. I meet a lot of young people who struggle with reading and don’t do well at school. It’s not that these young people aren’t intelligent. It’s that they don’t know how to articulate themselves. And this all starts really early on, with reading books.

“That is why I’m travelling round the UK spreading this message about the importance of reading.”

Bingo Association donates Variety Sunshine Coach to Broomfield SILC

Variety Sunshine Coach was presented by Bingo Association Chief Executive, Miles Baron, to pupils at Broomfield SILC School in Belle Isle on Thursday 23 May. This Sunshine Coach is the 27th donated by The Bingo Association in the past four years. Also in attendance at the presentation were representatives from nearby Mecca Hunslet and Mecca Mayfair clubs.

Broomfield SILC School caters for children between the ages of 2-19 with a wide range of disabilities including Autism, wheelchair users and complex medical issues. There are 220 children at the school and approximately 150 staff.

The specially adapted Sunshine Coach will be used every day to support residential and educational trips for the children and young people. They go to the local shops and cafes, the seaside, music events, support students to get to college and work experience placements as well as enabling a play scheme to get out and about in the holidays.

These activities enable the students to widen their horizons and benefit greatly from such enrichment opportunities, gaining valuable real-life skills from being out and about.

Variety’s Sunshine Coaches have helped improve the lives of thousands of disabled or disadvantaged children across the UK. The coaches enable schools to take children on education and recreational days out allowing children to explore places they would otherwise never have visited. Earlier this month, Variety donated their 5,600th Sunshine Coach in the UK. Kathryn Bryan, Head of School, Broomfield School said: “We are delighted to be in receipt of a Sunshine Coach and on behalf of our students, staff and Governing Body, we would like to thank The Bingo Association for their extremely generous donation.

“It will make a huge difference to our students and we will be able to continue to provide them with valuable and exciting experiences including residentials, trips and activities.

“Our school motto is ‘Investing in Individuals; Transforming Lives’ and the addition of a Sunshine Coach will enable us to access a wealth of activities that will enhance the lives of all our students.”

In our view Clean Air

Whilst we understand that Leeds City Council’s Clean Air Zone is a technical solution to a legal problem, rather than any guarantee of clean air for anybody, we need to to do more in South Leeds.

We are surrounded by motorways with cars, vans and lorries pouring out noxious fumes. Although we may not like the proposed railway viaduct, as a society we have to get more transport onto rail (and water) and off our roads. And if you do take your children to school by car, do remember to switch off the engine whilst you’re waiting.

Councillors are people too

Our ward Councillors come in for a lot of stick. Rightly so sometimes.

But it was very revealing to hear them questioning officers from the Highways department at the recent Inner South Community Committee.

They can only raise your concerns with the department and report back what will, or won’t be done.

But it’s clear they are not getting consistent information all the time.

So please don’t shoot the messenger when schemes are delayed beyond their control.

It’s a bloody joke building houses on all the green land and local football teams have nowhere to play. My Saturday team I help run need a pitch with changing facilities to carry on and there is nothing.

And it’s the same for all the children of Middleton - nothing to do, that’s why there is so much crime. All your thinking is about yourselves and getting money into the Council and building houses on all the playing fields. It’s a joke.

Take a photo to celebrate Holbeck life H

olbeck Elderly Aid (HEA) and Northern Monk Brewery launched their True North 2019 photography project at St Matthew’s Community Centre on Friday 31 May. The aim is to gather a collection of photographs that celebrate life in Holbeck.

Twelve photos will be selected to be published as a calendar, with proceeds going to HEA. “We are asking the people of Holbeck to take photos that capture life in the area, the people that live here and the parts that mean the most to you.”

Sophie Lennon from Northern Monk Brewery talked about how proud the company are to be based in Holbeck and how this project helps them give something back to the community.

Northern Monk are helping put Holbeck on the map internationally as they ship their successful beers to 25 countries around the globe, with each can having their Holbeck address on it.

Summer holiday in Weymouth T

his year’s Middleton Elderly Aid’s annual holiday took us to Weymouth in Dorset.

We set off from Middleton at 9am on Monday morning. It took us around 7 hours to reach our hotel, The Royal in Weymouth with a break for driver to have a rest and us to get some lunch.

The Royal Hotel was built in 1897 in the Victorian period. King George V was a frequent visitor to the hotel. It is said to be haunted on the 4th Floor, where my room was. I did not see him or hear him but Ada one of our Members did.

I walked up to the Sea Life Centre, but it wasn’t open for another hour, so I made my way back into Weymouth after having a rest first in Greenhill Gardens.

I went along the front to the pier at the west end of Weymouth to go up the observation tower.

Thursday Our coach driver, Karl, picked us all up after breakfast for a day out in Poole. Karl asked us if we wanted to go to Poole via the scenic route or the quicker route.

Of course we said the scenic route.

Along the road to Poole, we went through many villages with

He stressed that it’s not about having a fancy camera, you can take great photos on your phone, but remember to clean the lens and turn the phone on its side to take shots in a landscape format.

Tom talked about things to consider when composing your shot: the angle of the

light at different times of day, can you find a reflection?

Encourage people to relax for their portrait and give them an appropriate background.

Another tip is to switch on the grid function in the phone or camera’s settings. This shows you a grid to help you compose your shot – try offsetting the subject of the photo to left or right.

Finally, the joy of digital photography is that you can take as many photos as you

like to get the shot right. Try out different ideas, different angles, different light and see what works.

Kidz’n’Co family support group K

idz’n’Co is a group for children with Special Educational Needs and their families or carers and has been meeting since 2011 when the group was first established in Beeston.

Now meeting at a new location in Cottingley the group is looking to encourage new members to attend and enjoy the excellent activities and facilities they offer.

The group is aimed at children aged 519 who have Special Educational Needs and their families or carers. Run by a group of volunteers and parents, Kidz’n’Co runs on a stay and play basis, which provides the parents and carers of the children invaluable peer support and companionship while their children play and socialise in a safe inclusive environment.

Kidz’n’Co offer a variety of activities which the children can choose whether to join in with or not including a Nintendo Wii; laptops which can be used to surf the internet or complete homework; and a variety of colouring supplies and board games. The building also offers a large garden space where children can burn off energy or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings and gardens maintained by the Community Centre.

As well as the physical support the group offers the older children the

They are also offered an appropriate level of independence by being encouraged to join in cooking lunch for the participants.

Everyone enjoys lunch cooked by the children and qualified chef Matt who not only helps the children cook but has provided the group and Community Centre with useful baking equipment which will benefit the group for years to come.

The school holidays provide an opportunity for the group to take the

children out and some of their trips so far have included seeing Disney on Ice, Scarborough beach and the cinema.

Ultimately the parents attending the group decide where the holidays will take them and anticipate some exciting trips to come.

The group meets every Saturday during term time at the Cottingley Community Centre 10:30am-12:30pm. There is a £5 charge per family but this goes towards keeping the group running and contributing towards the costs of providing lunch for the whole family.

The Royal Hotel, Weymouth While waiting for our cases to be taken to our rooms, I decided to have a walk around Weymouth before coming back for Dinner.

I could not help in seeing how clean Weymouth is, compared to some seaside resorts I have been to in the last year. After dinner we all went down to the Ballroom to play Bingo and Hoy. This evening we had a lady singer (sorry forgot name) tunes from the 50s and 60s. I retired to bed around 11pm.

Tuesday: Day of leisure After breakfast, a group of us had a lovely walk around Weymouth, and had a look at the many shops in the town centre. Of course we found one of the two Weatherpersons for lunch.

After lunch, some of us went back to the hotel, I continued to walk in the opposite way on the front to where we have been in the morning.

After dinner, we all went down to the Ballroom and played Bingo.

The entertainment ended up the best one for me of the week.

Again I’m sorry, don’t know his name.

Most of the evening he sang Rock’n’Roll songs and played guitar. As well as Shadows’ numbers, he also played Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. For me the best song of the night.

Wednesday Another lovely day. The day trip out was to Dorchester Market, so I decided on that day do a bit of exploring and take some photographs for the blog.

Karl took us past the houses of Sandbanks residents, which include Harry Rednap, Michael Portillo and Angela Rippon.

Other residents include our very own Yorkshireman Geoff Boycott. Sandbanks has been described as the fourth most expensive area in the world to live.

In Poole some of our group went on a boat trip, which they tell me was very enjoyable. Anyway after some shopping, we had lunch at, you’ve guessed it, a Wetherspoons.

Back at our hotel, there was just enough time for some of us to have a last walk around Weymouth, before dinner and back down to the Ballroom for Bingo and Hoy. The Entertainer was my second best of the week, with members of MEA playing blown up musical instruments. Oh dear.

Friday After breakfast, some of us had a walk along the front, before getting on our coach for our journey home in the knowledge we all had a fantastic holiday in the sun. The rain started just as we left Weymouth, nice timing.

I want to thank all the staff for there help on this wonderful holiday. Without them, the holiday would not be possible. Poor Samantha looked tired looking after all of us. I hope Sam had a chance to chill over the weekend.

New residents at Beeston’s Artist House 45

H

i, we are Sophie + Kerri, artists who have been working together and with others since 2015.

You may have seen us building a miniature playground with kids at Beeston Festival recently!

This summer we are living in Beeston and doing some creative projects at our house and with Rowland Road Working Men’s Club. We are interested in cooperation, community spaces and play, and we work with sculpture, drawing and make films.

We are also in a band called ‘molejoy’ if you know of anywhere that needs punk music for an evening!

Whilst here we will be getting to know folk locally and hosting various free, creative and social events including: animation and sculpture workshops as well as dinners and film nights.

Keep an eye out for posters and flyers, or pop round to the club to say hello - anyone can sign up to be a member.

Join Slung Low this Beeston’s own summer at The Holbeck Sculpture Triangle O

n the weekend of 22 June Leeds and Wakefield celebrated the start of Yorkshire Sculpture International and visual arts festival Index, which are running in parallel for 100 days until 29 September.

I spoke to one of the Index producers, Georgia Taylor, at their launch and she explained that Index isn't "directly responding to the YSI and the work being shown is visual arts in general: films, installations, performances, screenings, publications; everything!”

To get an overview of how south Leeds is fitting into these programmes I met with Bruce Davies, the Curator at Beeston based BasementArtsProject.

Sculptor Phyllida Barlow has provided the inspiration for Yorkshire Sculpture International and Bruce was “intrigued by the whole proposition put forward; this idea of the anthropological side of sculpture. And this idea that we're bound to want to make stuff with our hands”.

Bruce describes Index as "the independent grass roots side of YSI" and what BasementArtsProject are doing for the Index Festival “is on a lot bigger scale than what Basement would do normally.”

It features four artists; Keith Ackerman, Dominic Hopkinson, Phill Hopkins and Jadene Imbusch across five projects.

Two of the projects are large sculptures which will be displayed in public sites close to BasementArtsProject. Keith Ackermans’s work is called 'Jacob's Ladder' and is a stone sculpture which is currently being made in a Leeds quarry and when completed will be an 8 foot staircase.

Phill Hopkins and Jadene Imbusch will be showing work at BasementArtsProject itself Bruce and his family’s terraced house. Both artists have close connections to Beeston; Hopkins used to live here and Loughborough University Fine Art student Imbusch was born in Beeston. His work will be down in the basement whilst hers will be an “intervention around the house”.

The work of both artists work is circling around issues to do with housing and homelessness.

Imbusch’s exhibition is called 'Pitched' and “there are a lot of tents cropping up in the images that she has created so far...which is very much an image that we are familiar with (in Beeston) at

the moment.

“Phil's 'House Within a Home' has a similar feel to it as well and he is looking at this idea of constructing a wooden frame house downstairs in the basement. So it will be an installation that you can walk into and experience things in.”

The fifth project is a series of joint pieces made by Hopkins and Imbusch during their preparation.

Through a post exchange they “would send one piece of cardboard backwards and forwards adding little bits to it until one of them called a halt to it. And so they've done that eight times and created eight pieces in that way...and they're already up and framed."

Taken together with the work at the BasementArtsProject itself the five projects will form a “little sculpture triangle” reflecting the larger Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle that the art spaces (the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, The Hepworth in Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton Hall) of Yorkshire Sculpture International are said to form.

Bruce thinks the Index projects will be good for both BasementArtsProject and for the people of south Leeds as we start to imagine a future with public sculpture in Beeston.

ith the third term of Slung Low’s Community College in full swing and a packed programme at The Holbeck, we have loads of things coming up that we’d love to share with you.

On Saturday 29 June at 2pm Polly Pattison, who was part of the community cast for Flood, brings Keep Your Chin Up to The Holbeck, a show which dramatises letters Polly discovered from her mother to her father during WW2.

In our Big Ideas series, inspirational people discuss their passion projects. On Sunday 30 June at 5pm Dr Usama, a British astronomer and senior researcher in Islamic Studies at the Quilliam Foundation delivers a talk titled ‘The Heros of Arabia, why the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is my inspiration for social justice struggle.’ And on Sunday 28 July 2 at 5pm John Fox, one of the leading alternative theatre makers of his generation and celebrated co-founder of Welfare State International (with Sue Gill) is coming to speak about his experiences and the values that are the foundation to his work.

The Holbeck Cup winners, Ugly Bucket will be here with their hilarious and risqué show 2 Clowns 1 Cup on Sunday 7 July at 5pm. Stick around afterwards for some food and the premier of ‘Standing in The rain’ a documentary film by Brett Chapman about our move to The Holbeck.

On Saturday 13 July we’re hosting a fabulous family day

with our friends at Unlimited Theatre who are bringing their brilliant Space Shed. As well as bringing the Unlimited Space Agency’s spectacular mobile HQ, there will also be two 45minute shows; How To Save The Planet and How I Hacked My Way into space. Throughout the day there will be Q&A workshops about the future and sustainability before ending the day with a two-hour silent disco!

If you’re interested in starting your own creative project but feel daunted by how to begin then join Helen Goalen from Rash Dash to explore potential starting points. This workshop

New shows at The Tetley T

wo new exhibitions have just opened at The Tetley, Hunslet’s own art gallery, and run through to September.

EVER is Nika Neelova's ambitious sculptural exhibition responds to, and is in dialogue with, the building's unique art deco architecture.

Often utilising reclaimed architectural materials, Neelova is interested in the way materials and architecture influence our sense of time and place.

Her sculptures are created by employing tactics of 'reverse archaeology' - considering an alternative reading of human history by examining found objects and architectural debris, and transforming them

beyond functionality.

As part of the Liverpool Biennial touring programme, Holly Hendry's large-scale public artwork Cenotaph, inspired by the artist's interest in the underground architecture of cities, will find a

new home outside The Tetley.

Hendry's sculptures look at the back of things, as she says "open cracks where you see the gooey insides".

18 What’s On IN BRIEF Skyfallers band play in the park The band Skyfallers, which includes members with Learning Difficulties will be performing at The Bridge Cafe in Cross Flatts Park, Beeston on Tuesday 20 August at 1pm.

The band will also be appearing at the Hunslet Nelson Beer Festival on Saturday 24 August

Bands in Cross Flatts Park The annual concert series, organised by the Friends of Cross Flatts Park kicks off on Sunday 30 June with the popular Latin American sounds of Mestisa. They will be followed by The Caribbeans Steel Band on Sunday 7 July; Yorkshire swing band, Swing of Things on 14 July along with the annual Dog Show; and Birds and Beasts - animal themed pop - on Sunday 21 July.

Concerts start at 2:30pm outside the Watsonian Pavilion near the top of the park. As usual tea and homemade cakes will be served and there will be children’s craft activities, bric a brac and book stalls.

Belle Isle Hotel reunion The Belle Isle reunion this year is once again to be held at St. Joseph’s Club in Hunslet on 3 August. The Concert room will be open from 4pm t0 11pm with disco by Dawn Silverwood to start at 6pm.

ddsocks Theatre return to Middleton Park on Tuesday 2 July for another night of family fun, breathing new life into Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream.

Experience A Midsummer Night's Dream as this Summer's festival of music, magic and mayhem!

Four young lovers run away to a summer festival in the woods to escape the stress of parental expectations at home. Before long they unwittingly find themselves the subjects of tricks, played on them with hilarious results. Add to that a troupe of amateur actors hired to play at the festival and you have the perfect recipe for an evening of hilarious family entertainment.

As usual the play will be staged outside on the bandstand by the visitor centre. Alan Shaw from Friends of Middleton Park (FOMP) who are staging the free event said: “We are looking forward to

eeds Heritage Beer Tours, a new tour sharing the history of beer in Leeds, launched at the end of June 2019.

The new tour will take visitors on a journey into Leeds’ beer history; visiting some of Leeds’ famous old beer venues, whilst sampling traditional ales along the way.

The new, independent Leeds-based tour has been setup by Mike Hampshire, an experienced tour guide with the national UK Brewery Tours company.

“I really enjoy taking people on tours with UK Brewery Tours” said Mike, “but I really wanted to do something a bit more focused on the rich heritage of beer in Leeds” It’s well known that Leeds was the home of Tetley’s brewery for almost 200 years, but the tour isn’t all about the worldfamous brewery.

“I can’t do the tour without telling the story of Tetley’s Brewery, so we start off at The Tetley, the former headquarters of the brewery” continued Mike. “However, I have spent a lot of time researching the history about other beer in the area, particularly during the Victorian era and later.”

After starting at The Tetley, the tour will continue on to four other venues, including Whitelocks, one of Leeds’ oldest pubs.

The tour takes around three hours, spending half an hour in each of the five venues. The price of a ticket also includes a drink in each place.

The next tour takes place on Wednesday 24 July with a special tour on Wednesday 28 August to coincide with Leeds Beer Week 2019. Both start at 6:30pm.

illing the summer holidays with affordable activities for the kids can be daunting. In South Leeds we’re lucky to have lots of freebies.

Helen and her daughter The Tetley’s biggest family festival returns First up the Tetley Weekender provides its annual free family festival, which is always a lot more informal and fun than it sounds on the artistic programme.

The Tetley Weekender annual micro festival will take place on 29 and 30 June, welcoming families from across Leeds for a weekend of free creative activities inspired by current exhibitions at The Tetley.

This year’s theme is sculpture, and families can get involved in repurposing recycled and reclaimed architectural and plumbing materials, and using stencils and spray paint to plan imaginary new town and city infrastructure.

encouraging visitors to try and create the biggest bubble or customise and paint a pebble to take home with them.

Through its regular community projects and Tiny Tetley messy play events for under-5s, The Tetley is well known for creating fun, inclusive and interesting events for all ages. The Tetley Weekender is an annual highlight, so expect an inspiring and fun day out.

A warm welcome at the LS-TEN cafe Under new management and with a new mission keenly focused on supporting the local community, LS-TEN has taken over running the venue where The Works skate park used to be.

On Sunday 14 July, 9am12noon, LS-TEN is opening its doors to local families to have the run of the whole venue, with free/pay-as-you-feel expert coach-led play sessions on offer.

Activities include scooters, BMX, skateboarding, multi-sports, arts & crafts, creative science, toys and games, and messy play.

Activities will be age-targeted and suitable for ages 0-10.

Broncos looking for new talent

sk anybody and they will tell you South Leeds is a dyed in the wool Rugby League Area, but Beeston has always had an association with Football due to it being the home of Leeds United FC. For some years Beeston Broncos have been trying to get youngsters involved in the 13 a side code with Under 8 and Over 8’s teams, and are currently hoping to introduce more teams.

Fundraising is always an issue, but with Leeds Rhinos having done a taster session on 22 May for new players and a stall at the Beeston Festival it’s hoped more funds can be raised for the club.

We asked Amy Brown about the club.

When did Beeston Broncos start?

The Club has been going a number of years now with various age groups.

What age groups are you hoping to attract?

Under 8’s (School years 2 and 3) How many players do you currently have?

We have 10 players with 2 new recent starters, but hope to attract many more.

Do the kids have to have played Rugby before?

No they don’t. We are looking for all abilities and pride ourselves on being inclusive to all.

What nights and where do you train?

Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6-7pm at Lane End

School (on the site of the old South Leeds Sports Centre).

Can parents help with fundraising ideas?

We would love parents to become involved and help out (though of course this is optional).

What events are coming up?

We have a chance to play in a Pre-game match at Headingley before a Leeds Rhinos game and at the South

How important is it to have a professional Rugby club helping with a taster session?

It gave the kids an opportunity to learn new skills and improve their game.

Hunslet Rugby host Local Lionesses roar as children’s duathlon World Cup fever hits D

Teams from ten primary schools took part at a rainy South Leeds Stadium

unslet RLFC played host to 120 children from local schools at their home game against Doncaster.

The youngsters took part in a Duathlon event jointly organised by the Hunslet Rugby Foundation, Active Leeds and Positive Futures.

In wet and windy conditions the children ran one lap of the track (400m) at South Leeds Stadium, before transitioning onto bikes to complete another lap, before then sprinting the last 100m to the finish line.

With the World Triathlon Championships now being a regular visitor to the city it was great to see local South Leeds children getting a piece of the action.

There were 12 children in each team representing Hunslet St Marys, Hunslet Carr, Middleton St Marys, Clapgate

Primary, Rothwell Primary, Beeston St Francis, St Francis of Assisi, Blackgates Primary, Westwood Primary and Gildersome Primary.

Hunslet Rugby Foundation’s Development officer Michael Nuttall who has been working in the schools commented: “Friday was a great way to round off what has been a fantastic physical education programme. I would like to thank Rich Sadler and Jason Minnott from Active Leeds for their support over the last year and look forward to working with them in the future. It was a bit wet but the children have loved it. A massive thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make it a great evening.”

Junior parkrun is helping our children’s health I

’m writing this article to encourage us parents to take our children to Junior parkrun, it is a fabulous, free, event that happens every Sunday at 9am in Cross Flatts Park.

It encourages children between the ages of 4 and 14 to be active by walking, jogging or running 2km around the park. It is run by a fantastic group of volunteers who get up early on a Sunday morning so our children can enjoy parkrun!

In an age of increasing technology, getting our children outside and active it

as vital as ever! Leeds is currently ahead of the curve when it comes to the health of some of our youngest, but we are losing ground during primary school age. The data shows that the proportion of our young children who are categorised as obese more than doubles over their time at primary school.

As a city there is lots that we need to do to help, such as; look at school lunches, the number of takeaways on our streets and the ice cream vans hanging around outside schools and parks. The city also needs to do more to promote health eating and

amien Gaffney never expected to manage a successful team when he first took his footballloving daughter to a Hunslet Club training session two years ago.

Yet now he finds himself coaching the only all-girls team in South Leeds, Hunslet Girls U10s, which has been blazing a trail.

Last year the side won the West Riding Girls Football League U9 Shield with a victory against Leeds City Juniors in the final and almost repeated their heroics in 2019 by reaching the final of the U10 version.

After another cup run that saw the team emerge victorious from two penalty shoot-outs, only a heartbreaking late goal consigned them to defeat against Ryburn United in this year’s U10 Shield final.

Nevertheless, the team’s progress is a source of pride for Gaffney, especially after the loss of a key player to the Leeds United Regional Talent Club.

“In the league we’ve won a lot of games and I know managers don’t look forward to seeing us,” he says.

“We’re still moving forward despite players leaving.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Leeds United came again and looked at some other players.”

Hunslet Girls have few local opponents, resulting in some long away trips, but they have been

lifestyles.

However, we can also help our children enjoy the beautiful parks and open spaces across the South of Leeds (Middleton Park, Cross Flatts Park, Holbeck Moor etc). Junior parkrun is done in around 15 minutes for most children, but the benefit is more than just the time walking, jogging or running, it means that children are already in the park, having a positive experience meaning that other visits during the week are less likely to be a battle!

Over the summer is the perfect time to make the most of our green spaces and

“There’s only a handful of clubs within the Leeds area, so we travel a bit.

The game is starting to take off and we’re starting to see a lot of teams emerge,” Gaffney enthuses.

“We’ve had four trips to Hebden Bridge this season – it’s a bit of a challenge but the parents have stuck with us, even through the grim weather.

We’ve stuck at it and there’s been some reward.”

Next season will see the team move to U11 level and face new challenges, including larger goals, 9-aside formations, tactical adjustments and the offside trap.

And with other sports potentially luring players away from football, the Hunslet coach is keen to see fresh faces contribute to the upcoming campaign.

Likewise, some of the children take their turn volunteering and again that is great to see.

“Every season presents a new set of challenges.

Things have boded well but it’s a new way of playing.

“We’re always looking to encourage new girls to come. A key part of next season is retention and having social occasions.

“It’s about getting the girls together and the social side – it’s not just about football and winning games,” he emphasises, pointing to the archery and assault course activities the team undertakes at the West Leeds Activity Centre.

“I’m keen for them to bond and a lot of them come from different schools. When they all get together, they’re really close and that’s really important.

“There’s life lessons for the girls outside of football. Football’s my passion but I like to see these girls grow as women, and they are. They’re

thriving in that environment.”

With record numbers of viewers following England’s progress in the Women’s World Cup, there’s never been a better time for young girls to get involved in the beautiful game. Could it be a source of inspiration for Gaffney’s side?

“Something I’m going to be pushing in my sessions is to watch these girls because they’re role models.

It’s a big moment,” he agrees.

“It shows that ladies can play football too and it might have a knock-on effect around here and encourage more girls to come to us.

“It’s a boom time for girls’ football and we’re keen to build on that.”

Beeston boxer Ismail Khan aims for the top I

t’s a quiet and calm Sunday morning by the River Aire.

Kayakers glide on the water, pedestrians stroll by the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and a couple of ducks curl up on the grassy bank hoping to enjoy a weekend lie-in.

Venture into the nearby gym off Kirkstall Road, though, and the scene is very different.

Music blares while men and women pump weights and push their bodies to the limit. It is here that Ismail Khan can be found exhibiting the industriousness found at neighbouring Armley Mill in bygone times. Sunday is anything but a day of rest.

This work ethic has underpinned the success of the Beeston boxer, who enjoyed a glittering amateur career that saw him win and retain the

52kg English youth title, claim two national university titles and reach the final of England Boxing Elite National Championships among other accolades.

After turning down the opportunity to represent Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in favour of turning professional last year, Khan boasts a record of two wins from two fights and is looking to extend his unbeaten record on Saturday 13 July at Elland Road in his third professional bout.

“We could have worked with Eddie Hearn or Frank Warren but we chose Mark Bateson [his promoter] because he’s close to home,” explains the 21-year-old, who is coached by Julian McGowan.

“We can get more exposure first, start building up as a professional and then get up to bigger fights.”

Khan’s first professional bout ended in a fourth-round knockout of Jake Pollard at Elland Road in November 2018. He then scored a points victory against Ukrainian Dmytro Kostenko at the same venue in March 2019.

“He [Kostenko] was a tough man but I beat him easy. These are people that I should be beating. Hopefully as the fights go on I’ll be fighting and beating better people.

“As an amateur I fought at the Echo Arena [in Liverpool].

I’ve been there and I’ve got the pedigree,” Khan adds.

The super featherweight fighter started training at six years old and contested his first fight at 11. The constant companion has been his father, Rash. Going pro has changed a lot but not the core father-son relationship.

“Nothing changes between

me and my dad. He’s the one that does everything. He [Bateson] just adds to it, and Julian. We’re one team and we’re going to get to the top.”

“I saw something in him and started believing in him,” says Rash. “As he started coming to the gym with me I thought, ‘This kid looks special. Let’s give it our best shot’ – and we’ve been going ever since.”

Someone who has also seen and overseen Khan’s development is coach Julian McGowan, who has worked with him for almost a year.

“I used to go to Burmantofts with Gary Sykes, who was super featherweight British champion, and Rash would always be there.

“Ismail was a 12-year-old with the amateurs. We had a few sessions and immediately thought there was a lot of potential,” he recollects.

Hunslet: inconsistant but still in the race H

unslet RLFC’s season continued on its rollercoaster ride through June with coach and supporters alike fustrated by the team’s lack of consistency.

The Parksiders clocked up an impressive 34-0 victory over Keighley Cougars under the lights at South Leeds Stadium on Friday 7 June. The weather was attrocious with heavy rain leading many mistakes on both sides, especially in the second half.

The game breakers came though at the end of the first half.

The impressive Mike Emmett wrestled his way over from close on 40 minutes, and in added time a beautiful Cain Southernwood ball sent Duane Straugheir through, who with confidence and rounded the full-back to score. Dean converted both tries and Hunslet went into the half time break with their tails up, leading 24-0.

On the 80th minute Hunslet put some icing on the cake when Zac Braham set off on a determined run towards the left corner, no man could have stopped him and with Danny Nicklas converting on the hooter it was a good day for the Parksiders winning by 34-0.

Seven days later Hunslet welcomed Doncaster RLFC to a second Friday night game.

The Parksiders were 14-12 up at half time with Reece Dean having no luck with two conversions from the touchline.

Chappell touched down to give the South Leeds club (with Dean’s conversion) a 20-16

lead with 15 minutes to go.

It looked to be Hunslet’s game to lose, and on 78 minutes that’s what they more or less did. From an attack the ball was dropped and Doncaster scooted 40 yards to score and edge ahead 20-22.

Thornton told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It was not a case of Doncaster being miles better, it was about us making some wrong decisions and not managing the game properly.

“We gifted them some soft tries and that’s what cost us the game.”

A “heated and brutal” heartto-heart team meeting in the week seemed to work ahead of the long trip to Llanelli to face West Wales Raiders on 22 June, where Hunslet won 1072.

A first half hat trick from Gareth Potts put Hunslet in the driving seat, with two from Jack Lee and one each from Jimmy Watson and Reece Dean completing the first half scoring. 0-40 at half time.

West Wales were first to score in the second period when new signing Robert Matamosi scored. But is was back to business for the Parksiders as Vila Halafihi and Ben Heaton scored two tries a piece. Adam Robinson and Nathan Chappell also scored and Reece Dean kicked 10 goals on the day.

With 12 games played Hunslet sit second in League 1, on 15 points and still in with a shout for promotion this season.

July sees two home games against third placed Newcastle Thunder on Sunday 7 July; and against leaders Whitehaven RLFC on Saturday 27 July. They also entertain North Wales Crusaders on Sunday 4 July. All three games kick off at 3pm at South Leeds Stadium and under 16’s are free.

“Ismail never says no. If we asked him to bounce on one leg for an hour he wouldn’t ask why, he’d just bounce on one leg.

“Sometimes the symmetry doesn’t work. Think of a marriage. You’re not perfect, your partner’s not perfect. But if you’re perfect together, that’s what’s important.

“You get shrewd, experienced, high-profile coaches, they get elite fighters and it doesn’t work out. It’s who’s the right coach for that fighter that’s key. We’ve got a good synergy between the three of us.”

With two professional wins under his belt, what can people expect from the former Hunslet Club boxer next month?

“His biggest strength is his character, his mental focus,” answers McGowan. “I don’t give praise lightly, but he has an aura of confidence about him. He’s self-assured.

“There are no more stressful situations than being in a boxing ring in front of 1,000 or 2,000 people, maybe 20,000 people at some point in the big arena. It won’t faze him.”

McGowan, 48, spent six months working with Khan before his professional debut last year but was taken aback by his attitude on the big night.

“I almost didn’t like it. It’s the first time I’ve been with a pro fighter in the dressing room who wasn’t nervous. I thought, ‘Maybe there’s a little bit of over-confidence or arrogance here.’

“Then I realised, actually, I love it. Nothing bothers him – he just gets on with it.”

McGowan continues: “He’s a serious talent but that’s half the story. There’s fighters – the top five to six super bantamweights in the country – at this stage who would have had similar attributes, but they won’t have had his aura or focus.

“I’ve been around good fighters with Gary [Sykes]; Josh Warrington worked in my gym for two years; Terry Flanagan and I would work together; I was in Newport sparring with Lee Selby.

“I’m telling you, at this stage of his career he’s as good as any of them but has a better attitude.”

Turning his attention to his next fight in July, Khan views it as part of the journey to becoming a world champion.

“We’ve done what we needed to do as an amateur,” he concludes.

“Boxing for England as a senior boxer – which is the main thing you want to do – I’ve done all that. Now I want to get to the top as a professional.

“I’m doing it for everyone. I represent young fighters in Leeds that are trying to do something.”

A confident McGowan adds: “He’s so far ahead of these kids that the only thing Ismail needs to beat opponents is to be in shape and have 100% concentration.”

Rash finishes by taking stock of a journey that started with a four-year-old Ismail training with him at home.

“It’s paying off because I’ve enjoyed my journey with my son. I’m already happy,” he says.

“Now it’s his dream. We leave no stone unturned and we’re going to go a long way.”
