HELLO EDITOR’S NOTE

A

nd we’re onto our second edition of Southern Vines already…not to mention half way through the year! Where has the time gone? Through it all somehow we have managed to grow from strength to strength and have jumped up by an additional 36 pages…a great triumph for our team.

In this issue we touch on elements that will help us embrace the colder months a bit better, some warm and inviting comfort food on the cards, travel trips to plan and perhaps a touch of redecorating on the

horizon to keep us busy.

This time of year is also prime wedding planning season so to help you and yours on the way to planning a lavish wedding with no hiccups we’ve put together a checklist to ensure you hit each of those important nails on the head.

My personal favourites in this edition, hard to say, would have to be a peek into the world of David Muirhead and his design team’s success in our décor feature. Those colours and that rustic barn-style design have me ready to jump on my next home project. The other would be our ‘Wine for thought’ column by Emile Joubert, and quite an exciting addition is the welcome of our wine club.

This one’s a gem, I really do hope you enjoy it!

ART SCENE Art, in any shape and form, speaks a language. If they induce some form of a reaction the artist has done their job. Vincent Da Silva, Frances Schandera-Duarte and Kendall-Leigh Nash send the message loud and clear.

VINCENT DA SILVA Vincent Da Silva is a well-known South African artist specializing in abstract animal sculpture. His interests in sculpture first honed in on the cat family, horses and then later with a range of other animals he decided to perfect in his art form. His bronze medium captures perfect texture and gracefully shows off the subject’s essence and not just the physical. Vincent has over 10 years of solid sculpture experience and has had a range of pieces showcased locally and internationally. As well as his small to large scale bronze pieces, he also produces artwork of different mediums and can so elegantly impact a canvas too, some of his first interest ‘animals’ and some in human form, dancers in particular. FRANCES SCHANDERA-DUARTE Frances Schandera-Duarte, born in Germany, studied her way through fashion design and a few years later conquered a postgraduate diploma in Fine Arts. It’s here that her true passion flourished and has since had a wide range of her artwork on display internationally.

Her eclectic/abstract style sees her using a large array of materials in her paintings, including oil paint with ink, glued surgical gauze, mineral sands and various textured papers. Her latest masterpieces show off a florallike inspiration and bursts with bright colours.

Frances resides between South Africa and Germany with her husband, South African artist Everett Duarte.

KENDALL-LEIGH NASH Based in Cape Town, Kendall-Leigh Nash is one of our up and coming artists that’s talent has her expressing her artistic side in more than one set style. She studied Fine Arts at Rhodes University and to date spends her time lost in a canvas or grooming her natural photography skills. Kendall has always shown an interest in various artistic mediums including pencil, charcoal and paint, and was lucky enough to be taught and mentored by South African artist Diane Victor from whom she gained many ‘industry secrets’.

We’ve recently visited a handful of restaurants in our hood and thought we’d share our opinions on some menu delights.

JONKERSHUIS Jonkershuis, nestled beautifully between large oak trees and Groot Constantia’s golden vineyards, is a ‘must visit’ dining spot this winter. They have a worthy winter menu planned especially around local in-season produce that screams comfort food, the kind that leaves a lasting memory. Expect dishes like pork neck with sweet potato mash and green beans, or dishes with more of a Cape Malay-styled influence like bobotie or sweet lamb curry.

The interior is clean and rustic, and boasts an inviting old Dutch-styled fire place often lit to keeps its patrons warm and toasty. The service is above average with just enough attention to detail. You’ll be planning your next visit soon.

LOCO LOUNGE Debbie Bergmann-Harris and her husband Tom have traveled the world far and wide and it’s from their experiences and various culinary studies along the way that prompted them to share in their love and passion for food. The menu changes slightly with each passing season to accommodate ethically sourced and seasonal produce.

The dishes you can expect to see range from a good ol’ burger to a neat Asian and South American inspired tapas selection to sticky toffee pudding and German apple cake.

You’ll be welcomed by friendly staff (and more often than not, Debbie herself) into a trendy space with a theatrical ‘touch of madness’. Definitely worth a visit!

MOYO KIRSTENBOSCH Set on the beautiful grounds of Kirstenbosch Gardens, Moyo affords us a truly authentic African dining experience.

They have interesting dishes on their menu including a crocodile and prawn salad, fried mopane worms and springbok carpaccio. As well as the menu, options on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays they include a stunning communal feast by means of a buffet filled with quirky optionals, a few regular favourites like roast leg of lamb, chicken curry, beef dumplings, and a dessert selection to swoon over. The tasty food options and the friendly staff, the table side washing of hands and the proverbial African face-painting experience really leaves a lasting impression. And with views of our gorgeous Table Mountain – it’s a winner.

OPEN DOOR Situated on the Constantia Uitsig grounds, this gem of a fairly new restaurant welcomes you with elegance and style and a bit of history from yesteryear. Open Door, just over a year old, has a menu suitable to almost any pallet and includes dishes like seared scallops to start, roasted springbok loin, and a creamy sweetcorn risotto for mains.

The dishes are beautifully presented falling into the ‘culinary art’ category. Desserts, another flavor explosion. In addition to the a la carte menu they have a 5 course pairing menu, combining some of their best creations with some near-perfect wine options.

The service staff are knowledgeable and friendly and definitely add to the already classy ambience. All in all, a real treat.

his sumptuously decorated residence

by David Muirhead and his design team is a peaceful rendition of the style of a country house and barn, with dramatic double volume ceilings and an interesting colour palette that takes its inspiration from surrounding suburban nature and more.

KITCHEN COLLECTIVE A dominant feature in the kitchen is the elongated feature wall, clad in peachy tones of face brick. A teak and glass display cabinet stores decorative crockery and the three uniform urns on top create balanced symmetry. Their vivacious glossy turquoise colour contrasts against the texture of the bricks. This clever setup weights the space and serves as a dramatic focal point. The wooden island doubles as a food preparation and seating area, owning its space. It is conveniently separate from the sleek utilitarian kitchen installation by ‘Inspirations’ - Design and Landscaping.

Repeat rectangular shapes feature throughout the kitchen,

particularly in the bespoke cabinetry, indicating an orderly, practical space. The gentle, neutral colour on the walls is a strong characteristic of the home that runs a unifying thread throughout, allowing plenty of room to play with richer, more extravagant layers of fabric, texture and colour.

Natural light emphasises all the reflective surfaces. The tall upright vases lend a regal air with a lavish flourish that is both beautiful and opulent all at once and blooms can be swapped for an immediate colour change. Tufted dining chairs are elegant enough to host guests in the kitchen – they make a sophisticated dining statement that suggests you could be in for a lot more than grilled cheese and coffee.

LOUNGE SOCIETY Formal lounges hark back to the romance of a bygone era when afternoon tea was served on the finest china and after-dinner drinks poured from crystal decanters.

eautifully appointed, in Camps Bay, this former fifties style bungalow was renovated and remodelled after Austrian American architect Richard Neutra’s modernist example. Famous for designing Southern Californian homes that tended greatly towards his client’s needs, Neutra’s simplistic, lowslung architectural style is clearly identifiable in this former fifties style bungalow.

Angular, modern and sea-facing, the house is elevated 15m above street level, the property’s steep incline affords sweeping views of the Atlantic, framed generously by its original palm trees. The steps leading up to the house cut through stone terraces that were redesigned to accommodate the garden on different levels.

“We stripped the house down to the bare brickwork and concrete and used that as a canvas, creating clean lines and removing everything that did not have a function or real aesthetic merit”, says Cape Town’s GSQUARED architect, Renato Graca.

the place, creating a wide open space. A beam was installed to retain the roof structure in what is now a seamless combination of functional living areas. The sublime kitchen is identifiable mostly by its rectangular black marble splashback, contrasting with the white cupboards.

Crushed cotton drapes and warm, textured wooden cladding offset the stark geometry offering measured aesthetic contrast.

‘We were aiming at a 1950’s feel with an African touch,’ says Graca, and the furniture echoes that era’s interior design. A 1958 Poul Hennigson multi-layered artichoke lamp in the dining area graces a raw wood table surrounded by comfortable Eames DAW chairs from 1950. An oversized black and white print of a herd of elephants in the background lends a peaceful air.

The lounge area’s quirky inbuilt seating is modelled around a feature gas fireplace. Its surrounding wooden cladding is a repeat of the kitchen panels that contribute to a unified look.

A creative mix of Congolese upholstery prints in cool blue and beige hues were introduced

by Graca who assisted with the interior décor. His choice of fabrics is gently offset by a blue Arne Jacobsen 1958 egg chair that adds drama to the room with its interesting art deco form without being obtrusive.

In keeping with the African

theme, colourful feathered ethnic headdresses adorn the walls in the master bedroom contrasting with the muted stone feature wall. Although starkly utilitarian by design, the space flaunts some striking décor additions such as the red Eero Saarinen’s 1948 womb chair and ottoman and Verner Panton’s 1964 shell pendant lamp.

Flooring, both indoors and out is covered with coloured screed

stretching out onto the vast space that is the proverbial James Bond pool deck, all 100 square metres of it. But it’s the exaggerated roof extension jutting over the deck that is the most recognisable characteristic of this property.

Graca calls the build an engineering feat. “We used a cantilevered steel clip-on. It looks wonderful and really creates the dramatic feel of this raised deck.” The roof includes some luxurious details; a water mist system for scorching summers and heat strips for the winter, four integrated loudspeakers and LED light strips. A seat with concealed lighting runs along the edge of the deck and contributes to a setting that is perfect for entertaining guests.

The swimming pool is lit so that it becomes a magical scene at night-time and during the day, the canopy overhead offers a protected spot from which to view the magnificence of the Atlantic Ocean and its golden sunsets. SV

E

very day, more and more ink gets spilled— as financial experts debate the reasons for the Rand’s galling instability on the global currency market. Since October of last year, the Rand has depreciated by 35% against the US Dollar (the lowest point being 10th of January this year), before clawing back about 25% of this devaluation to trade at an exchange rate of roughly R14.20/$1 at the end of April 2016.

While many will have you think that the reasons for this instability are entirely political, the situation is of course far more complicated and nuanced than that.

This article attempts to identify some key factors in the Rand’s fluctuating performance on the global market, to try and give a sense of the variety and complexity of the causes involved.

THE SHADOW OF 2009 The Great Recession of 2008/2009—also known as the ‘Sub-Prime Mortgage Crisis’—is an intriguing, complicated story all of its own. Briefly outlined, what happened is as follows: in response to Alan Greenspan announcing that the US federal interest rate would remain at an investment-repelling 1%, venture capitalists the world over sought to make higher gains through providing the general public with unprecedented access to mortgage loans with ‘sub-prime’ and ‘adjustable’ interest rates. The usual requirements for housing loans—such as proof of income—were relaxed, as credit was given out all too freely. The goal, for brokers, was then to sell this debt on (in the form of ‘packages’ known as Collaterised Debt Obligations, or CDOs) to huge conglomerate banks, who felt confident they could absorb the risks involved and benefit from the relatively high rate of return.

Of course, as people who could never afford the loans in the first place started to default on their repayments, this bubble burst—leading to the greatest worldwide economic downturn in modern history. Emerging economies such as South Africa’s are still reeling from the effects of this 2009 Recession, as a risk-averse atmosphere has predominated global currency markets—and major global players, such as the US with its energy reforms, have sought internal solutions that tend to ‘freeze’ currencies such as the Rand out of growth and development.

OTHER GEOPOLITICAL INFLUENCES Of course, in a global world, the interconnectedness of all economies and markets cannot be underestimated. In June 2015, the Rand lost 26% of its value following unrest in Chinese markets brought about by a 2% devaluation of the Yuan (part of a greater strategy to boost China’s competitiveness on the export market).

For South Africa, and other African economies which depend heavily on exporting oils, minerals and other commodities to China, this move—which saw a steep fall in commodity prices and an attendant

freeze on currency market growth—has hit hard, and experts predict more potential instability surrounding Chinese economic policies in 2016.

The reality is that South Africa is in a period of relatively low economic productivity. The reasons for this are numerous—some are historical, some are contemporary—but the upshot is that we rely, for our economic stability, on robust commodity export prices. When these markets turn against us, as they will do from time to time, some depreciation in the value of the Rand will be inevitable.

UNDERVALUATION & OVER-TRADING The Purchasing-Power-Parity (PPP) Index, also known as the ‘Big Mac Index’, asserts that South Africa’s currency is one of the most undervalued in the world.

The aim of the index is to show the ‘real value’ of a currency—as it affects consumers—by comparing what you would pay for a Big Mac hamburger in your home country against its benchmark US Dollar price. This index shows that South Africa should be trading at around R6 or R7 to the Dollar—hence a supposed ‘real-world’ devaluation of around 60% less purchasing power.

Of course, studies such as this are culturally biased and hardly ‘scientific’, but there is some truth to the idea that South Africa’s currency is undervalued. The reasons for this, once again, are manifold—but one extra-national concern centres around the practice of over-trading the Rand on global financial markets.

The Rand only accounts for a shade under 0.3% of the world’s daily financial market turnover, yet the Rand also makes up nearly 1.1% of the world’s daily trading. Essentially, this means that—although the Rand is used extensively on global markets for trading purposes—it does not realise the kind of yields as a currency that one would expect. The chief reason for this lies in asymmetric global market exchange controls: non-South African residents are able to buy or sell in Rand with little or no financial restrictions, while South Africans are unable to speculate with foreign currency in reciprocal fashion.

bank decided to cut consumers a break by resisting inflation, it could raise interest rates—however, this might only further stifle an economy that is only growing at 1.5% annually. She also points out that, in environmental terms, the Rand’s struggles could not have come at a more ill-opportune moment: the country has been in the grips of its worst drought since 1992, pushing the price of staple foods such as white corn to cripplingly high levels on the South African Futures Exchange.

LOCAL PRESSURES AND VICIOUS CIRCLES There are, of course, numerous national (or ‘internal’) factors that affect the value of the Rand. Since the backbone of South Africa’s modern economy has been the mining sector, labour unrest, policy uncertainty and competition between unions has seen a skeptical attitude on the part of foreign investors in recent years. On the whole, global investors have been net sellers of South African bonds and equities in the period 2003-2015.

Other social issues—such as corruption, rising unemployment and the need to address systemic inequalities in almost every facet of daily life—have further weighed down the economy, causing a lagging GDP and concern over the nation’s reliability as an economic partner. The recent Finance Minister scandal, coupled with fears over a downgrade in South Africa’s international credit rating, have only sown more doubt in the minds of investors looking to back the Rand on global financial markets.

However, it is important to appreciate how difficult any attempt to address these issues will prove to be. As this article has tried to explain, the interconnectedness of the various elements of our economy—and the circumstantial, almost alchemical way in which they seem to interact at times—means that any positive adjustment in one area can often lead to (either necessary or unintended) negative consequences in another.

Fatima Bhoola, a lecturer in economics at Wits, wrote in the Mail & Guardian (18 January) about the challenges facing policy-makers looking to revitalise the stagnating Rand. She explains that if the central

THE WAY FORWARD The bottom line is that the Rand—like many of the world’s ‘emerging currencies’—will continue to fluctuate for the foreseeable future. The reasons for this instability are never entirely local: we are embedded in a global financial system, and the whims and caprices of foreign governments and international markets will continue to affect the performance of the Rand on the world’s economic stage.

We can only hope to keep our house in order: to resist desperate measures such as those taken by the Costa Rican government to attract foreign capital, and to try and slowly restore a sense of calmness to our beleaguered economy. he combination of wet weather, everyday stress and that mid-year slump might be making you miserable, but there’s good news: research shows that some simple adjustments can make all the difference when it comes to feeling more positive.

GO FOR A MASSAGE As we approach the middle of the year, it is common to start feeling fatigued and tense.

Tension (as well as postural stress caused by sitting at a desk for long periods of time) can cause muscle pain, particularly in the back and shoulders. Massage therapy can help to ease some of this tension and pain. It can

also help to improve skin tone, improve circulation and increase flexibility in the joints. If that’s not enough to convince you to book a massage immediately, a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that regular massage therapy helped to significantly reduce stress levels in patients who struggled with depression and anxiety.

TURN YOUR HOME INTO A HAVEN If your job is stressful, and it’s difficult to unwind at the end of it every evening, try to transform

So, if you’re saving your leave for the warmer months, start planning now, or consider taking a few short, more regular trips to keep you inspired throughout the year!

SPEND SOME TIME OUTSIDE

Eating a balanced, healthy diet can go a long way in making us feel good, but some studies suggest that certain foods can actually help to reduce anxiety and stress levels. A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that participants who ate a diet full of whole foods were less likely to feel depressed than those who ate large amounts of desserts, processed meats and fried or refined foods. Researchers believe that the antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, as well as in omega-rich fatty acids found in fish, may be associated with a lower risk of depression.

Another study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that drinking caffeinated teas could boost mental alertness. The researchers found that an amino acid in the tea called theanine may help to improve focus. With the chilly weather upon us, it’s the perfect time to test the theory.

Opt for green or oolong tea for added health benefits. SV

s temperatures drop and the temptations of comfort food and a warm bed become harder and harder to resist, it can be difficult to stick to an exercise regime.

Long nights and dark mornings may leave you uninspired when it comes to your usual routine, especially if you enjoy outdoor workouts.

But, maintaining a healthy balance needn’t be a chore. We asked Susan Johnston, a southern suburbs-based biokineticist and director at Vivendi Wellness, a company that creates tailored corporate and individual wellness plans, for her tips on staying motivated, even in the coldest months of the year.

FIND A FRIEND “Find a training buddy (or preferably a few) so that you have someone to hold you accountable for showing up,” suggests Susan. Having someone that is relying on you means that you’re less likely to skip an exercise session – you won’t want to let your training buddy down by not arriving, and exercising

with a friend is also way more fun. Consider setting yourself a specific goal or challenge – you and your training buddy could enter a race together, for example, or aim to do a set number of sit-ups in a week – you’ll be inspired to motivate each other and stick to your shared plan. “Along the way, treat yourself with some mini-rewards until you reach your final goal, at which time you can splurge on a mega-reward!” says Susan.

SPICE UP YOUR ROUTINE There’s no harm in changing your exercise routine from time to time – in fact, it can help to keep you motivated. If you struggle with early mornings in the winter, try and fit in a lunch time session instead.

“If walking or jogging outdoors in winter has lost its appeal because of the cold and rain, join a spinning class or find a gym with an exercise track,” recommends Susan. If you choose to brave the outdoors despite the weather, make sure you invest in good quality, warm training gear.

MANAGE YOUR TIME When it comes to your health, learning what your priorities are is key. Susan suggests figuring out which parts of your life need the most of your time and energy. “Generally, the biggest chunk of time is taken up by work, and many of us have the bad habit of staying at work much longer than we should,” says Susan. Her suggestion? “Decide what time you are going to leave the office as soon as you arrive in the morning. Communicate with your colleagues so that they know you will not be available after your chosen time.” Once you have set these boundaries, you can make sure that you set aside time for

your wellness regime. Choose activities that make you feel good once you are done.” She also suggests trying to get family and friends involved in your regime – having this kind of support is a great motivator. Also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. “Do one thing at a time – don’t overload yourself and try to go from zero to hero. Being fit and healthy is a long-term, ongoing goal. You will get there by listening to your body, and progressing through your wellness goals step-by-step,” advises Susan. SV

“Make being healthy a part of your daily routine – don’t think of it as a diet and exercise, rather focus on eating well and being active as a way of life,” says Susan.

TAKE TIME OUT Making sure that you give your body time to recover is essential. Susan suggests making time to relax every day – even just ten minutes can have a huge impact on keeping stress levels under control. “Also include social events and time with family and friends,” says Susan. “This can boost your energy and help you to recharge.”

HAVE FUN “Staying healthy and fit shouldn’t be a prison sentence,” urges Susan. “Have fun and try to enjoy

ROASTED TOMATO AND BASIL SOUP Ingredients (serves 6) 2kg large ripe tomatoes 100g basil 50g garlic cloves peeled 2 Tbs brown sugar 100ml olive oil 1 x 410g whole peeled tomatoes 250ml water or vegetable stock Salt and pepper to taste Method Preheat the oven to 200C 1. Core the tomatoes and place them in a deep oven tray side by side 2. Place all the ingredients in the deep oven tray, except the water/vegetable stock and tinned tomatoes 3. Cover the tray with tin foil and bake the tomatoes for around 40 minutes or until the skin easily comes off the tomatoes 4. Remove the foil and allow to cool enough for you to handle the tomatoes, then remove the skins from the tomatoes 5. Decant all the ingredients into a medium sized sauce pot and add the tinned tomatoes and water/ vegetable stock 6. Cook over a medium low heat for 20 minutes 7. Blend 8. Season and adjust the flavour by adding more sugar, salt or pepper

Use a turning knife to core the tomatoes.

Soak garlic cloves in their skin in boiling hot water for a few minutes to make peeling them easier.

GORGONZOLA PENNE PASTA Ingredients (serves 6) 500g penne pasta, cooked 50g chopped white onion 10g chopped thyme 50ml vegetable oil 20g chopped fresh garlic 1l fresh cream 500ml milk 400g creamy gorgonzola 20g corn flour slurry (10g cornflour and 30ml water) Salt and pepper to taste Additions: Parmesan, spinach, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, steamed broccoli Method 1. Heat a medium sized sauce pot over a medium heat 2. Place the oil, onions, garlic and thyme in the heated pot 3. Sauté the onions until translucent 4. Add the gorgonzola (crumble it into the pot) 5. Add the cream

6. Reduce the sauce by half 7. Add the milk 8. Season to taste 9. Add the slurry and allow to thicken slightly 10. Blend the sauce for a smooth consistency 11. Add the cooked pasta and any trimmings such as spinach, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, or steamed broccoli 12. Serve with grated parmesan or crushed walnuts

Run your fingers against the direction of the leaf growth of the thyme to remove the fragrant leaves.

To check your sauce is ready, put a teaspoon amount on a cold plate and run your finger through the middle of the sauce. If the gap remains where your finger ran through it, it is ready.

MALVA PUDDING Ingredients for the cake (serves 6) 180g castor sugar 2 whole Eggs 1Tbs apricot jam 150g cake flour 1 tsp bicarb 1 tsp melted butter 1 tsp white vinegar 85ml milk Ingredients for the sauce 85ml cream 100g butter 150g castor sugar 85ml hot water 2 tsp vanilla essence

A ‘ONE POT’ FAMILY LAMB CASSEROLE Ingredients (serves 6) 1.5kg diced lamb shoulder deboned (free range if possible) 100ml vegetable oil 1 large onion, peeled and diced 50g chopped celery stalk 50g fresh garlic clove chopped 20g rosemary chopped 20g chopped parsley 20g fresh basil leaves 200g peeled potatoes cubed 200g peeled carrots sliced 2 x 410g whole peeled tomatoes 800ml water or vegetable stock Salt and pepper Method 1. Season the lamb with salt and pepper 2. Heat a medium sized pot over a medium heat 3. Add the vegetable oil, onions, garlic and herbs 4. Sauté until the onions are soft/ translucent 5. Add the meat and turn up the heat slightly to allow some browning 6. Add the tinned tomatoes

7. Add the water or stock, the meat must be covered by 2cm of liquid 8. Reduce the heat to a medium heat and cook for 1 hour 9. Add the potatoes and carrots and cook for a further 30 minutes 10. Season to taste and serve with rice

Ensure your meat cubes are the same size to allow for even cooking.

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180C 2. Make the sauce by combining all the sauce ingredients into a sauce pot and heating until combined and sugar has melted, set aside for later 3. Sieve dry ingredients together (cake flour, bicarb, sugar) into a bowl 4. Mix all the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl (eggs, vinegar, butter, jam and milk) 5. Make a well in the middle of your dry ingredients and slowly add the wet mixture while mixing 6. Once you have a smooth consistency and all ingredients are mixed well, pour the mixture into a 20cm x 30cm well-greased deep oven tray 7. Bake for 30 minutes 8. Poke holes into the cake and pour the sauce over the cake, allow to settle for a few minutes 9. Ready to serve

With any cake batter recipe, make sure you add wet ingredients to dry at a good pace to allow for you to mix it well, and do not over work the batter. Once it’s smooth, it is done.

WINE FOR THOUGHT Full-bodied reds and solid whites to enjoy over these cold months.

here are few things more irritating to the wine-lover than reading or hearing about a desirable tipple, but then being unable to access it with the relative ease it deserves. So, from this second issue of Southern Vines we have procured the services of the incomparable wine retailer Mike Bampfield-Duggan whose Wine Concepts shop in Newlands has always been a delightful place to purchase as well as to gain vinous information from knowledgeable staff. Plus, nothing beats a cold pint of draught beer at Barrister’s next door after an hour’s wine-shopping.

With winter setting in with logs slowly burning in roomy fireplaces, there are few wines that warm the heart as much as a Shiraz. The soft, spicy grape made famous by France’s Rhône region. Overdone Shiraz, is however, really not my thing. Too much new-wood-ageing grapes picked late and syrupyripe tend to make jammy, sloppy wines at an eyewatering alcohol level. My pick is the Mr Borio’s Shiraz from the iconic Simonsig Wine Estate just

outside Stellenbosch. Mr Alessandro Borio was an Italian gentleman who helped out as a handyman and builder on the estate after the Second World War, and the Malan family have since honoured him with a gorgeous, graceful Shiraz wine.

This wine has everything that appeals to me about the Shiraz grape: freshness is paramount, making Mr Borio’s a bright, focussed wine with delightful nuances. A perfume of violets wafts from the glass, the sappy tastes of blackcurrants and an interesting sprinkling of white pepper makes an appearance to add a touch of the exotic.

Who says winter is for red wine only?

Deeply oaked, buttery Chardonnays and complex Chenin Blanc wines add sunshine and warmth to short grey days, with the added bonus of being full-bodied to satisfy those hidden spots only we wine drinkers are aware of.

Chenin Blanc is made in various styles, but the one I am going for is the more serious and visceral version Neil Groenewald of Bellingham produces with his Old Vine Chenin Blanc. As the name implies the grapes originate from vineyards that have stood the test of time, their roots deeply entrenched in the Cape’s soils for decades. Older vines produce

grapes of concentration and character in meagre yields allowing the winemaker to deploy his artistic ambitions when fermenting and maturing the very special juice these grapes offer.

Bellingham Old Vine Chenin Blanc is a true Cape Classic, and with Chenin being a feature of the South African wine industry I always present this wine to foreign guests or members of the wine trade as being an example of what we can do very, very well.

The wine is aged in barrels, but the oak acts as a conduit of texture, flavour and structure instead of giving you a mouthful of splinters. Lemon, grapefruit and honey-comb tease the palate with a juicy perkiness, while the pure tastes of river pebble, fresh water and sun-baked hay add a life-affirming dimension.

Oh, and winter being oyster-time, no salty slimy testosterone-inducing mollusc is entering my mouth without being accompanied by a cool glass of golden Bellingham Old Vine.

Mike reminded me of the wines made by The High Road, an outfit based in Stellenbosch’s Bosman’s Crossing development who have really impressed us with their red wine quality.

The High Road Classique is made from Stellenbosch fruit with the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot driving the show, and displays why South Africa has a reputation for making wines of more ‘Old World’ elegance than any of our other ‘New World’ brethren.

Once again, freshness in a red wine is non-

negotiable for me – wine is a living thing, and if it does not express life it has lost its most important element.

The High Road Classique is cloaked in flavours of berries and ripe plums enhanced by those characters that make Bordeaux reds such evocative wines: dry pine-needles and pencil shavings, a hint of fynbos and a sprightly teaspoon of dried pomegranate pips.

This is a wine that punches way above its weight and one which is set to increase the cult following it. A glass of this will add sophistication to the most trying fireside conversation, while a hearty stew of lamb and vegetables should not be seen without it.

CAPE VELVET IRISH COFFEE Ingredients 50ml Cape Velvet liqueur 180ml good strong hot coffee 2 tsp brown sugar Whipped cream and chocolate shavings Directions Warm a glass with hot water to prepare Brew the coffee and pour into already warmed glass Add the Cape Velvet liqueur to the coffee and stir (to prevent from curdling first add a teaspoon of cold water to the coffee) Finish off with a generous helping of whipped cream on top and garnish with a sprinkle of chocolate shavings

THE ORIGINS OF CHAMPAGNE

Wine-growing in the champagne region first appeared in the 3rd century. Originally, they used to produce still wines, with no effervescence. These wines were used to bless the kings of France as part of their crowning in the Reims Cathedral, the heart of the champagne region. The wine used to be called “the Holy Water of Champagne”.

It is only in the late 17th century that the natural effervescence of wines was brought under control. Bottling and corking were mastered, and the popularity of champagne soared in the 18th century. In the 19th century, champagne embodied the French spirit and became the celebratory wine.

The champagne terroir today represents 34 157 hectares under cultivation, with 319 different Crus (town and villages), ranked as Grands Crus, Premiers Crus or Crus Ordinaires. Only 3 grape varieties are used to produce champagne: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

Champagne is unique for diverse reasons: the designated area is limited and specific, the hostile climate and the chalky subsoil will give freshness, elegancy and complexity to the wine.

The grapes are the most expensive in the world, and finally the “Méthode Champenoise” is complex and lengthy (minimum 3 years).

Champagne has historically been associated with luxury and the parties of the royal courts and aristocracy of Europe. Then, in the 19th century it became a worldwide success. Champagne, as a symbol of celebration, marks the joy of the occasion. Even the act of opening the bottle marks the joyful moment, with the pop of the cork and the champagne that overflows in abundance.

CHAMPAGNE AT WEDDINGS

The tradition of toasting with champagne at weddings is derived from the religious ritual where the couple would drink from the same cup of wine to celebrate their union. In French culture, champagne became widely accepted as the drink of choice to celebrate unions, achievements and joyful occasions as well as previously-religious celebrations such as the christening of a ship.

Champagne is currently traditionally consumed as part of the wedding toasts given by family and friends of the bride and groom. The champagne’s delicate yet abundant golden bubbles born from the years spent dormant in the cellars of the champagne house, are a perfect symbol of the exaltation of joy, celebrating the crafting of a perfect union.

The traditional method of serving champagne at weddings is typically via the pouring of a champagne tower of waterfall. The champagne glasses (preferably coupes) are stacked in a pyramid structure and the champagne is poured into the top glass, letting the champagne trickle down to the glasses below filling them all.

The vintage wedding has been big for the last few years, and based on this year’s trends, it’s here to stay! The look is beautifully classic and lends itself well to incorporating special family heirlooms, like books and jewellry into the wedding décor. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a formal, super-sophisticated wedding, opt for lavish details in a gorgeous space.

When it comes to local trends, Nicci Morris of Nicolette Weddings, a Cape Townbased wedding planning and coordination service, says that a lot of couples are starting to move away from the ultra-rustic and ultra-luxury looks toward something in the middle, and what she dubs a natural luxury look.

This trend is a mixture of natural elements with luxury items such as indoor plants and chandeliers.

THE DETAILS A décor trend fast gaining popularity is hanging flower installations. “Beautifully designed flower installations are hung from the ceiling, draping or chandeliers,” explains Nicci. “They

can be used during the ceremony hanging above the guests, or indoors at the reception where flowers can be draped over the tables, on chalk boards or even down the hallways. This trend also helps to decrease any negative spaces in a wedding venue and is often a statement piece for a couple looking for something different.”

Bright colours are becoming more popular– no longer limited to pale neutral and blush shades, weddings are generally incorporating richer, bolder palettes.

Easy ways to bring colour into your big day include a bold bouquet, bright flowers on the tables, and mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses.

Crocheted lace is also very big, and a lot of brides are choosing

dresses with a bohemianinspired style. Printed table linens are gaining popularity – floral table runners or table clothes add a pretty quirkiness to the setting.

THE FOOD There are a few distinct new trends when it comes to wedding food, one of the most common is couples opting for desserts rather than cake.

There has also been a shift towards brunch weddings, where couples opt for a casual daytime affair, as well as menu options with a homecooked flavour, and which are organic or locally sourced.

On the drinks menu, craft cocktails are having a moment, as are after-dinner whisky bars.

ith an impressive backdrop of rugged mountains, vineyards and farmlands, the town of Robertson sits pretty with its Jacaranda-lined streets and Victorian architecture.

The people are friendly and welcoming, and the surrounding area is packed with high-quality, yet unpretentious restaurants, wine estates and farm stalls. Take a breath, shake off the stresses of city life, and slow down for a chilled out road trip to remember.

TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE If you have time to really ease into the laid-back atmosphere of the area, take your time on the road from Cape Town to soak in the scenery of the Nuy Valley, which borders the Robertson valley.

For dried fruit and home baked sweet treats, pop into the quirky Pampoenstalletjie – you can’t miss the little house decorated with piles of pumpkins outside.

Further along the road, and a little off the beaten track, is Saggy Stone – a restaurant, brewery and pub. The road there may be bumpy, but you won’t be disappointed with the gorgeous setting, wholesome food (think homemade beer bread, rustic burgers and fresh salads) and, of course, the selection of craft beer made with spring water straight off the Langeberg mountains.

The very beautiful De Wetshof Estate offers a wide range of Chardonnays and Brut in an elegant manor house setting. An avenue of Jacaranda trees, rose bushes and striking architecture create an ideal setting for an afternoon of tasting (believe us, you need time for this one!).

Another family-run gem is the pretty Springfield Estate, which

If savoury is more your style, Marbrin Olive Growers offers olive and olive oil tastings on their award-winning farm. To stock up on locally made jams, preserves, dried fruit, baked goods, olives

and honey, as well as wine at cellar prices, pop into Platform 62 farm stall between Robertson and Montagu. They also have brandy tastings on the menu, some of which are paired with unusual elements including lemon zest and strips of ginger.

When it comes to eating out, there really is no shortage of options. From laid-back and wholesome, to gourmet finedining, there’s something for every palate. Mo and Rose Wine

Bistro in Klaasvoogds offers dishes made with seasonal local ingredients with a European twist, while the Robertson Small Hotel in the heart of the town is known for the eclectic cuisine at Reuben’s restaurant, also with a strong focus on local and organic produce.

Many of the wine farms have restaurants on site, and the surrounding towns of Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale and McGregor are well worth exploring for a bite to eat.

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS If, after all the good food and wine, you’d like to stretch your legs and take in the fresh air, you’ll love the Fish Eagle hiking trail.

It’s 8.5 kilometres long, and starts at the Van Loveren Wine Estate.

The trail crosses the Breede River and winds up the Rooikrans for breathtaking views over the valley.

Golfers will enjoy the Silwerstrand Golf Estate located just outside of town, and there are also two boat cruises that run down the Breede River – the Viljoensdrift cruise includes a picnic and winetasting, while the Breede River Goose cruise is ideal for bird watching, and bass fishing.

A trip to Robertson itself would be incomplete without a visit to the Sheilam nursery – a cactus and succulent garden that boasts around 2000 species of plants.

The garden was established in 1954, and is recognized as one of the most impressive collections of plants in the country. Take a stroll through the garden –you’ll feel like you’re in a Dr Seuss story – or book a guided tour to learn about the array of unique species they grow. SV

from the Languedoc region. Minervois is well known for red wines that tend to be fuller than those of nearby regions. The estate also makes white wines, rosé, and more notably sweeter wines – including a Minervois Harvest. The incredible landscape of this area makes it well worth a stop – even if it’s just for the experience and scenery and not so much for the proverbial ‘drinking’. The vineyards climb the side of the Black Mountain, which offers incredible panoramic views to soak in as well.

Just a little further along the Canal du Midi you’ll come to the city of Carcassonne – a place full of incredible architecture and fascinating histories. As you approach the city its fairytale-esque Medieval

Citadel will be the first to catch your eye. Situated on a hill above the younger city (often referred to as a town despite having ‘city status’) of Carcassonne, it seems to be larger than life.

And so it should be; the fortressed city offers a spectacular display of ancient architecture, and it too forms part of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. While a visit is well worth the time, don’t forget to visit the modern city, or lower town of Carcassonne. It may not be as popular as its imposing sibling, but it does offer a refreshing taste of French ‘small-town’ life that few rarely have the privilege to take in.

The Canal du Midi ends in Toulouse, one of France’s more exciting cities. Here the old meets the new, in a mixture of astounding ancient architecture and an incredible alternative art scene. It is in both of these that the city’s history has been captured. Most of the key sights and attractions can be found downtown, and are close enough for you to explore them on foot.

No matter where you choose to start your route from along the canals, or where you wish to wander, a barging experience is hardly one you’ll ever forget.

It is the quintessential slow-paced escape that will allow you both the time to explore the wonderments you pass, and time to relax in the delightful surrounds and warmth of Southern France. SV

.A. Milne once said, “Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad.” Beginners may know the feeling, but—for those yet to catch the golfing bug—this article presents seven reasons for its growing popularity in the Southern Suburbs.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

For newcomers, probably golf’s biggest attraction is that it offers a chance to spend the day out in beautiful natural surroundings. You get some light exercise as you stroll around the course, enjoying the sun and breathing fresh air. This is why golf is often said to have a ‘restorative’ effect on people, and why even a day spent looking for stray balls in the trees can feel truly well spent. Many people combine golfing with other passions, such as birding, making the experience of nature even more complete.

A SPORT FOR LIFE

Unlike contact sports, or other forms of exercise that might put stress on your joints, golf is a sport you could feasibly play for the rest of your life. This is not only because of its relatively undemanding physical aspect—it also speaks to the confounding (and addictive) difficulty of the sport. Once your basic game is mastered, seasoned golfers will tell you, that’s when the real work begins. Golf requires you to invest time and patience, you need to be dedicated in order to improve, and it is this kind of life-long mental investment in the sport that led Bobby Jones to say, “Golf is a game played on a five-inch course—the distance between your ears.”

It is full of written and unwritten rules that promote respect for other players and good sportsmanship. Of course, playing sport is very rarely just about you—and golf offers a wonderful way to interact with friends and family members over an extended period of time and in a relaxed, invigorating atmosphere. Especially when playing with others more or less on your level, golf offers great bonding opportunities as you struggle— and improve—together with the others in your group.

It is easy to find other solo golfers to pair up with for a friendly round of golf: use apps and social network sites such as Tee Off Buddies and Social Par to hook up with other golfers in your area.

Cape Town (and the Western Cape) is an internationally sought-after golfing destination.

You don’t need to travel to Sun City or even as far as Fancourt to experience top-quality golf courses: you can stretch your legs on some of the finest greens in the Southern Hemisphere right here in the Mother City. Hotspots include the Royal Cape Golf Club in Wynberg; the Mowbray Golf Course; the Rondebosch Golf Course; there is a great driving range at the River Club in Observatory, and—further down the Peninsula— there is the Clovelly Golf Course and Country Club; the Steenberg Golf Course; the Westlake Golf Course and the tricky, 9-hole Simon’s Town Golf Course. The Metropolitan Golf Club is situated in Mouille Point, near the Green Point Stadium, offering a spectacular urban setting crisscrossed by bird-filled lakes and bridges.

“I’m not feeling very well,” said Groucho Marx. “I need a doctor immediately. Ring the nearest golf course!” While it is a cliché of sorts—and the sport is certainly becoming less ‘exclusive’ over time—there is still something about golf that is synonymous with notions of wealth and success; the imagination conjures scenes of deals getting made on the course and then closed later in the clubhouse. Indeed, economists have written extensively about the subject, concluding that there may be something to the idea that when golfing, you get to spend a lot of time with associates, providing space to talk and the opportunity to show your mettle as you navigate the course.

South Africa has a long, rich history of professional golfing. From Gary Player to Ernie Els, Retief Goosen to Trevor Immelman, this country has produced some of the world’s best—and with this proud heritage, comes a legacy of professional support networks and international exposure. The Professional Golf Association’s South African chapter (the PGA SA) oversees numerous tournaments each year, and offers keen golfers various opportunities to deepen their level of engagement with the sport, from booking a lesson with a local pro to poring over their extensive online resources. t is almost time for Wimbledon, the world’s most famous tennis tournament, to serve up another fortnight of topclass sporting entertainment.

The 2016 Championships will run from 27 June to 10 July 2016, and—while the world’s best gear up to strut their stuff on the sunny South London courts—South African sports-lovers are eagerly anticipating the long tennis-filled winter evenings ahead.

WHAT’S THE FUSS? For the uninitiated, Wimbledon is unique for a number of reasons.

It is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the birthplace of lawn tennis as a sport, the first Championships being held at the All England Croquet Club in 1877.

This sense of history, tradition and etiquette is at the heart of Wimbledon’s charm: the players adhere to a strict dress code permitting white clothes only; female players are addressed with the honorific “Ms”; up until 2003,

Wimbledon’s famous colours—a majestic combination of dark green and purple—add to the sense of pageantry surrounding the event (as does the traditional dessert of strawberries and cream).

This superior pedigree, however, does not solely account for Wimbledon’s immense popularity.

Wimbledon is the only grasscourt Grand Slam tournament, and the tennis on display is fast and furious—making for thrilling viewing, as a single break of service can often be enough to clinch the set. It is a high pressure environment to play in, and—with no tie-breaker allowed in the final set—Wimbledon has become known for epic, marathon matchups such as the 11–hour defeat of Nicholas Mahut at the hands of John Isner in 2010, the game spanning across three days before the Frenchman finally went down 70-68 in the 5th set.

NOTABLE CHAMPIONS Wimbledon has also been blessed with a rich tradition of memorable characters and unforgettable champions. Since Spencer Gore won the inaugural event of 1877 (where only 22 players competed), fans have witnessed a wide variety of personalities stamp their mark on the sport’s most prestigious tournament.

The ‘rock star’ mould of player must include Suzanne Lenglen, who won 6 titles (between 1919 and 1925) and who courted controversy by wearing outfits that exposed her arms and her ankles, and by sipping brandy during change-overs between games. Later came blonde-haired, blue-eyed Boris “Boom-Boom” Becker, earring-sporting Pat Cash, tantrum-throwing John McEnroe, drop-dead gorgeous Gabriela Sabatini and Goran Ivanisevic, the giant Croatian who’d celebrate every victory by ripping his shirt off and throwing it into the crowd.

and decorum, Wimbledon has also celebrated Champions of a different sort—those winners who have achieved lasting fame and respect for advancing social causes through their success.

Arthur Ashe tore down racial boundaries when he won in 1975 (later even turning his attention to anti-Apartheid activism in South Africa), while Billie Jean King—winner of a joint-record 20 Wimbledon titles—has long campaigned for equal prize money for women competitors, proving her point by defeating Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” in 1973. More recently, Centre Court darling Roger Federer has carried the baton, establishing a foundation that provides extensive poverty relief to children in under-developed areas of the world.

WHO TO WATCH IN 2016 This year’s competition promises to be another exciting installment in the 139-year old Wimbledon story. Top-ranked and topseeded Novak Djokovic will be looking to win his 4th singles title, though he will have to hold off a resurgent Rafael Nadal, who won in Barcelona at the end of April. Big-serving Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded 13th, is the expert’s pick for a surprise

Maria Sharapova’s drug test controversy has dominated women’s tennis news of late, and the players will be looking to create some new headlines at Wimbledon to put this issue to bed. Top-seeded Serena Williams, fresh from starring in Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ music video, will be looking to hold onto her Number 1 world ranking, as she defends her title against the likes of Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova.
