According to spokeswoman Gina Maiola, Ivey spoke with the U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday regarding the shutdown of the Texas-based Colonial Pipeline, which was recently struck by a cyberattack. The company
provides almost half of the East Coast’s gasoline and jet fuel. “It’s not that we have a gasoline shortage, it’s that we have this supply crunch, and that things will be back to normal soon,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. “We are asking people not to hoard...we expect that gas station owners are and should act responsibly. We will have no tolerance for price gouging.” On Monday, President Biden loosened restrictions on truck drivers to allow the transportation of more fuel, to avoid pileups at gas
pumps; however, across DeKalb County, pumps have been covered with bags, indicating no fuel or lines were so long that citizens waited upwards of an hour to fill their vehicles and other containers. “This is similar to the panic buying that comes with hurricane season,” said State Senator Steve Livingston. “It places an unnecessary strain on our system and prevents everyone from having what they need.” Colonial Pipeline initiated the restart of pipeline activities at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Governor Kay Ivey has announced an end to the State of Alabama's participation in all federally funded pandemic unemployment compensation programs, effective June 19. According to the Governor's Office, the affected programs include: • Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), which provides for an additional $300 weekly payment to recipients of unemployment compensation
• Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), providing benefits for self-employed, gig workers, and part-time workers who do not usually qualify • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), providing an extension of benefits once regular benefits end • Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC), providing an additional $100 benefit to certain people with mixed earnings "As Alabama's

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Local window manufacturer Kudzu Millwork will be distributing free groceries on Saturday, May 22 at 9 a.m. on the VFW Fairgrounds. The event will be first-come, first-served drive-thru distribution until supplies run out. Due to the high volume of traffic, each vehicle will receive only one grocery cart of food. This food distribution is a partnership between Kudzu Millwork and OneGenAway. Kudzu Millwork is manufacturer of All Temp Windows, making more than 80,000 vinyl windows annually for projects. OneGenAway is a non-profit that works to bring fresh, healthy food directly to people in need by rescuing food from local grocery stores and restaurants and holding mobile food distributions in Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.

Pfizer vaccine expanded to cover children over 12

By Zach Hester Reporter zach@southerntorch.com ALABAMA — On Monday, officials with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the expansion of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to include children as young as 12 years old. All available, approved COVID-19 vaccines are currently open for all Americans over the age of 16. According to State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris, authorizing a vaccine for younger age groups would make it easier to safely reopen schools in the fall. FDA vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks stated Pfizer’s testing in adolescents, “met our rigorous standards...having a vaccine authorized for a younger population is a critical step in continuing to lessen the immense public health burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla stated the company expected to have data available for elementary school students by the end of 2021.
