SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — As students continue to return to classrooms across the nation, Scottsboro City Schools (SCS) Superintendent Dr. Jose Reyes has delivered an update regarding his school system's progress.
In a statement, Reyes said the Board of Education would be updating virtual days on their website shortly. He stated that October 9, 23 and 30, along with November 6 and 20 would now be virtual instruction days for all students. Traditionallyeducated students will continue to have four days per week of face-to-face instruction. "We are in an imperfect situation where there is no perfect answer but this arrangement is a compromise in an attempt to provide for students and teachers," said Reyes. "The one day a week [of] e-learning gives the building 72 hours to rest from students, allowing for extra cleaning by faculty and staff."
Reyes reported that three (3) students have been quarantined for positive COVID-19 results since Scottsboro reopened on a staggered schedule last month. Approximately 36 students have been quarantined for exposure. Four SCS employees have been quarantined since the start of the school year.
Reyes applauded students for continuing to follow health protocols including washing hands and wearing face coverings. "We must not relax as a Wildcat family," Reyes said. "We all need to continue to wear masks to the extent possible and continue to wash and sanitize hands. Even without COVID, we know that the end of November and the beginning of December begins flu season so let's stay vigilant in what we are doing." "As always, I do my best to give you the best information possible," he concluded. "Please reach out to the appropriate school or central office administrator if you have any questions or concerns."

Man Charged with Attempted Murder
By Southern Torch Staff
FORT PAYNE, Ala. — From the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden: Today, the suspect in Wednesday’s officer involved shooting on I-59 has been formally charged.
Dayon Patterson (21 of Pensacola, Florida) was charged with Attempted Murder and Felony Attempt to Elude.
The charges stem from the incident Wednesday, when a Deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on I-59 Northbound at approximately 6 pm. The vehicle initially stopped at the Collinsville exit, but before the deputy could make contact with the suspect, he fled and got back on the interstate.
While traveling at a high rate of speed, the suspect began firing upon the deputy. The suspect eventually collided with another vehicle, injuring two motorists during the incident. Neither the suspect or deputy were injured.
Patterson is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bond in the DeKalb County Detention Center. More charges may be forthcoming regarding the wreck and injured motorists caused by the suspect.
Numerous law enforcement agencies and first responders assisted on scene, including Fort Payne, Geraldine, Rainsville, Henagar, and Collinsville Police Departments, along with ALEA Troopers and the Collinsville Fire Department.
DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said of the incident: “We truly are fortunate that our deputy and no innocent motorists were killed in Wednesday’s incident. This highlights the increasing dangers faced by law enforcement. A seemingly routine traffic stop can turn into a deadly situation in an instant.”
“This also goes to show that not only our law enforcement officers, but also our citizens that use the interstate must remain cautious. You never know who might be traveling through our county and what their intentions might be. I’d like to thank the agencies within our county and the State Bureau of Investigations for their vital assistance in this incident,” he concluded.
