FORT PAYNE, Ala.-The Fort Payne City Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, February 23.

Fort Payne Superintendent Brian Jett announced that Dr. Adkins applied for the FY22 National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grant and Subgrants and

that the school’s CNP department was awarded $337,267.000 in grant funds.

The Council will then be the final vote on whether the City of Rainsville will have a City School System.

The Council passed Ordinance 02-22-2023 which conveyed property occupied by the old Boozer Bridge back to the original owner, Claude Shankles.

Kay Guffey, Chairperson for the Tree City Committee, spoke to the Council regarding the upcoming Arbor Day projects. The Council donated $1,000 to purchase and plant cherry trees in the City of Rainsville.

The container, that stores the runoff water, used to cool the trailer remains in Rainsville. The environmental service group that was contracted for cleanup is obtaining permits to transport this to a facility in Ohio.

Phillips Announces Retirement Mayor’s Efforts To Stay Connected

JACKSON COUNTY, ALA.-- Only two months into his fourth term as Jackson County Sheriff, Chuck Phillips has announced his plans to retire on April 1 due to personal reasons.

Phillips was first elected Jackson County Sheriff in 2010.

His retirement date with be exactly 41 years after he first joined law enforcement with the Scottsboro Police Department.

Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to announce Phillips’ replacement next month.

University of Mississippi Chancellor’s Honor Roll

UNIVERSITY, MS (02/27/2023)-- The University of Mississippi announced the following local students were named to the Fall 2022 Honor Roll lists, including Chancellor’s Honor Roll: Abby Carroll, of Section, AL Madeline Gossett, of Scottsboro, AL Micah Brouillette, of Scottsboro, AL The Chancellor’s Honor Roll is reserved for students who earn a semester GPA of 3.75-4.00.

“The remarkable students achieving Chancellor’s Honor Roll are among the best and brightest at the University of

Mississippi,” said Chancellor Glenn Boyce. “I commend them for their hard work and dedication resulting in their outstanding academic achievements and this well-deserved recognition.”

In order to be eligible for honor roll designation, a student must have completed at least 12 graded hours for the semester and may not be on academic probation during the semester.

SCOTTSBORO - When it comes to the responsibilities and oversight of a mayor there may be some common misconceptions. A mayor is essentially a CEO of a municipality.

Some of the duties of a mayor are to oversee municipal operations, municipal employees, make sure the bills are paid and execute municipal contracts.

The role of the mayor generally reflects the viewpoints of the voters.

Many of the misconceptions concerning a mayor’s role in government basically come from thinking a mayor has the power to do things they do not have control over, and assuming a mayor does not have the authority to do some of the things they actually do have the authority to do.

Scottsboro’s Mayor, Jim McCamy says he is working diligently to keep his office transparent and keep his finger on the pulse of Scottsboro. One way in which he stays connected to the public is by speaking on a local radio station the fourth Friday of each month. The radio spot includes updates and a Q&A segment.

Another avenue Mayor McCamy utilizes is a 30-minute monthly

interview with a Scottsboro newspaper.

“On a monthly basis, Economic Development, The Chamber of Commerce, Commercial Development & Downtown Redevelopment, Utilies, Education, Hospital and County agencies get together to review what’s working, what our challenges are, and what is coming up,” said Mayor McCamy.

Annually, a State of the City meeting is held. This year it will be on Thursday, March 23, at the Goose Pond Civic Center. The breakfast meeting is open to the public and typically hosts local business’, industry and local government leaders. The annual event gives the mayor the opportunity to recognize departments for their accomplishments and discuss financials and upcoming projects and plans.”

Mayor McCamy said the office he took in 2020 was basically what he expected it to be. “I have to say there

They ask, “why is my money going out of state? Why am I in a line and traffic jam on the Florida/ Georgia border?” My present response is, “Talk with your state representative or state

senator. All they have to do is simply vote to let you vote on the issue.”

In order for Alabama to participate, it cannot be accomplished by a simple legislative act. It takes a Constitutional Act that must be voted on and approved by a vote of the people.

A Constitutional Amendment needs 21 votes in the 35 member State Senate and 63 votes in the 105 member State House of Representatives.

The State Senate returns almost intact.

Governor Ivey had a comprehensive gaming measure that passed in the Senate last year. Therefore, the votes are probably there for passage in the upper body. The governor was only a few votes short in the House. There are several new faces in that chamber. The governor will need to get behind this issue with both feet.

Mayor McCamy said he is especially proud of the relationship between the city and county.

“We meet and speak regularly, not only about Scottsboro, but about the county,” said McCamy. “I am a native son who cares deeply about this community and I wanted to be in this office to look for ways to improve the quality of life in both Scottsboro and in Jackson County. My hope is that if momentum is gained now, the momentum will continue and the future will be bright.”

It is Time for Alabamians to Reap Lottery Dollars

The gala and festivities of the gubernatorial swearing in are all wrapped up.

Governor Kay Ivey has been sworn in for another four year term. The legislators, all 140, are all sworn in soon after the general election victories in November. Therefore, they all are ready to get down to business.

The Regular Session begins next week. This inaugural first year Regular Session has historically been the year when major controversial substantive issues are addressed. Legislators will not face election for four more years and Governor Ivey is term limited and will probably never face voters of Alabama again. Therefore, this first year is when the tough challenges will

be tackled.

Usually there is some urgent pressing financial problems facing the governor and legislature.

However, as this new quadrennium begins, the state coffers are in pretty good shape.

A lot of credit for this financial stability can be credited to wise and prudent budgeting by past legislative budget committee leaders, who for the most part are all back in command in both chambers.

An issue that should be addressed is the garnering of gaming dollars that Alabamians are spending on lottery tickets and sports betting in surrounding states.

We need to keep this money in state for our educational and Medicaid funding rather than giving

our money to Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Georgia has benefitted from an education lottery for close to 30 years.

Alabamians, to a large degree, have paid for a good many Georgia students free college education over the last three decades.

It is well known and documented that the most lottery tickets sold in the states of Florida and Georgia are sold at locations on the Alabama border.

Alabama television stations consistently interview Alabamians at these state border locations. These Alabama folks are frustrated to say the least that they have had to drive hundreds of miles to give their money to our sister states. They know that we are not that much richer than Florida or Georgia to be able to subsidize their state governments and

A Special Session may be needed to highlight the gravitas and importance of garnering gaming dollars for Alabama.

We are only one of five states that get no revenue from gaming.

As a former legislator, I would have a hard time coming home and telling my constituents that I voted against giving them the right to vote on an important constitutional amendment that could raise a lot of money for the state. You can bet your bottom dollar that if a lottery/ gaming referendum is placed on the ballot, it will pass in a New York minute. Even the most conservative folks in our state would vote for it, if for only one reason – they are sick and tired of Alabamians’ money going to our neighboring states.

BIRMINGHAM, ALA.-- Ben and Jessica Johnson of DeKalb County were named Soybean Division winners in the Alabama Farmers Federation 2023 Outstanding Young Farm Family (OYFF) contest during the organization’s Young

Farmers Conference in Birmingham on February. 25.

The statewide contest is for farmers ages 18-35 who receive most of their income from production agriculture.

It measures success based on farm growth and diversification, Farm Bureau involvement, and

community leadership.

The Johnsons raise row crops in Fyffe. As division winners, they will serve a one-year, ex-officio term on the Federation’s State Soybean Committee, where they’ll see the policy development process firsthand and help guide research, promotion, and education work.

Dekalb Offers Multiple Camping Opportunities

DEKALB COUNTY - According to amateuradventure journal.com Americans spend $167 billion on camping gear, accessories, and trip-related expenses each year. In 2020, 16 percent of new campers tried camping because of the pandemic. As of 2021, seven in ten households identify themselves as at least occasional campers or glampers. Almost one-third of campers stayed within 50 miles of home in 2021.

DeKalb County has multiple campgrounds to choose from.

Service Specifications: A. Weed trimming around all trees, shrubs, and stationary objects and edging of all concrete/asphalt surfaces. In addition, weed control shall be applied around the buildings and sidewalks.

B. Mowing of all grass at each campus listed above. The campus located at 37844 U.S. Highway 11 in Hammondville has an adjoining lot that is to be included in the bid.

C. Blowing of all mowing, edging, and weed-trimming debris from all concrete/asphalt surfaces.

III. Timing of Service: The number of mowing times may vary based on growth rates and mowing times per month will be agreed upon at the beginning of each month. The Fort Payne location will need to be mowed every 7-10 days, all other locations usually every 10-12 days.

The provider shall provide proof of insurance for the term of the agreement.

Commercial General Liability of no less than $100,000.00, $200,000.00 each occurrence.

CRIME Engaging in a Sex Act with Student

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — A Grand Jury indictment was issued for Issac Hunter Dismuke (28 of Crossville) for three counts of a School Employee Engaging in a Sex Act with a Student Under the Age of 19 Years and two counts of Rape 2nd.

Dismuke was booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center on February 27, 2023, on a $300,000.00 bond.

“It is sad that these types of arrests have to be made on those who are entrusted to teach and protect students’ well-being and safety. But these offenses will not be tolerated in our county.” stated DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden.

The DeKalb County Board of Education released the following statement regarding the arrest: Today, February 27,2023, the DeKalb County Sheriff arrested an employee of Crossville High School.

Based on the circumstances, DeKalb County Schools (the “District”) has placed

this employee on administrative leave.

This employee will not return to any District campus during the pendency of this matter. Because this is a pending personnel matter involving students, the District will not share any information pertaining to its investigation. It is of paramount importance to the District to protect the privacy of its students.

Additionally, the District wants parents to know that it treats the safety and well-being of its students as its highest priority. As such, the District encourages parents and students to report any issues they have to their teachers, principals, school resource officers, or any other District employee.

During the pendency of this matter, the District will be working collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, and the District would like to express its appreciation for the hard work of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Human Resources (“DHR”).

State Championship Bound

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- The Plainview Bears defeated the Sumter Central Jaguars, 55-41 on Tuesday in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 3A State Basketball Semifinals at the Legacy Area in Birmingham and punched their ticket to the State Championship.

Plainview rallied to overcome a gameopening run by Sumter Central, which racked up 9 unanswered points by the Plainview Bears.

“I didn’t want to call a timeout, they were making shots and we were missing the easy ones, but our guys did a great job of showing their resilience and not panicking” stated Plainview Basketball Head Coach Robi Coker.

The Plainview Bears got back into their groove when Jonah Williams scored a three-pointer in the

first quarter, to close out the period with a score of 17-12.

During the second quarter, Senior Dylan Haymon started and finished a 9-0 run to take the Plainview lead. Luke Smith helped with a dunk to take the 11-0 run, giving the Plainview Bears the 27-24 lead at halftime.

The Plainview Bears regrouped after the half and gained the 55-41 victory.

“We just had to keep taking good shots and not panic” stated Luke Smith.

“We knew the shots would eventually fall for us and we’d get back in the game”.

“There’s not a lot of coaching that goes

on out there. These guys have to make split-second decisions” stated Coker.

Dylan Haymon and Jonah Williams scored 15 points for the Plainview Bears.

Haymon had (3) three-pointers, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Williams had (5) of the team’s 3-pointers Luke Smith finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Landon White had 10 points.

The Plainview Bears have won eight of its last nine games at the Legacy Arena.

Plainview was defeated by Midfield in the 2017 Championship game.

Plainview will advance to the State Championship game again against Midfield on Friday in hopes of winning the program’s fourth state title since 2018 and settling the score.

The State Championship Game is set to begin at 2:15 p.m. on Friday. 98-3 Wild Country will have live coverage of the game.

Academy Varsity Girls defeated Chilton on Saturday, February 25, to win the ACAA DIV 2 State Basketbll Championship.

Jaelin Monroe was named to the All-Tournament Team and Mackenzie Ely was named Tournament MVP.

Ala.-- The Plainview Varsity Bears defeated the Piedmont Bulldogs, 67-48, to win the Class 3A Northeast Regional

Championship at Pete Mathews Coliseum in Jacksonville on Thursday February the 23.

The Plainview Bears had a 30-23 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, they gained a 50-31 advantage over the Bulldogs. Piedmont and Plainview both scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Landon White led the Plainview Bears with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Jonah Williams had four three-pointers and a total of seventeen points for the game.

Dylan Haymon had thirteen points and two three-pointers.
