DeKalb BOE to Expand Bus Fleet

RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- (Video on Southern Torch Facebook page) The DeKalb County Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, February 16. The meeting was changed to 1:00 p.m. from 5 p.m., due to the potential of severe weather.

The Board accepted the low bid from Southland International, to expand the county’s bus fleet. The bid was for (12) 2024 Type C, 72 Passenger School Buses, with air conditioning in the amount of $118,838.79 per bus.

committed to serving DeKalb County Students with the best buses possible. With the number of summer programs and summer travel continuing to grow, the DCBOE voted to continue the purchase of air-conditioned buses”

“With this purchase, DeKalb County will be operating 36 AC-equipped buses next year. All 121 routes will be covered by buses that are 10 years old or newer.

The Council voted to make a $16,500 budget

Resolution 2023-04, which is an annual resolution to inform ADEM of steps taken by the Wastewater Plant to meet permit requirements.

The Council approved the following activity permits: • Cotton State Boutique, Easter Egg Hunt, City Park, Saturday, April 1, from Noon until 5:00 p.m.

• Nicole Goggans, Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk, Sunday, September 24from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Wildcats Headed February Is National Black History Month To State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.--The Scottsboro Wildcats won the Class 5A Northeast Regional Championship at Jacksonville State University and punched their ticket to the Alabama Highs School Athletic State Tournament (AHSAA), with a 67-66 win over Guntersville.

The Scottsboro Wildcats led Guntersville 15-14 at the end of one. The Scottsboro Wildcats carried the 26-25 lead into intermission.

At the end of the

third period, Scottsboro had a 51-39 advantage over Guntersville. With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, Guntersville hit three straight three-pointers to narrow the Scottsboro lead, to three points.

The free throw by Kyle Wright with 10 seconds remaining in the game, helped seal the victory for the Scottsboro Wildcats.

Scottsboro will advance to the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Tournament for the second time in three years.

SCOTTSBORO - In 1976 Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, since then every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in the U.S. history.

The Black History Month 2023 theme, “Black Resistance,” investigates how African Americans have resisted oppression since the nation’s earliest days.

Scottsboro showcases a museum dedicated to one piece of history that explores one aspect of this oppression.

The Scottsboro Boys Museum commemorates the lives and legacy of nine young African Americans who, in the 1930s, became international symbols of race-based injustice in the South. The museum also celebrates the positive

actions of those from all origins who have taken a stand against racial oppression.

The Scottsboro Boys Museum is especially interested in collaborating with educators in order to discover more effective ways to teach race in modern classrooms.

The Scottsboro Boys, ages 13 to 20, were accused of raping two white women. The landmark set of legal cases from this incident dealt with

racism, the right to a fair trial, all-white juries, rushed trials, lynch mobs, and disruptive mobs.

While Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, was quoted in 2005 as having had something less sensational in mind than the case of the Scottsboro Boys when she wrote her novel, there have been many comparisons made over the years.

Dr. John Ed Mathison of Montgomery has rightfully been referred to as one of the greatest preachers in the history of the State of Alabama. He was born a Methodist minister. His father was a legendary Methodist minister, and his brother is a legend in his own right as a Methodist minister.

John Ed served 36 years as Senior Minister of Frazer Methodist Church in Montgomery. Under his leadership, Frazer grew from 400 members to 9,000 and had the largest Sunday School attendance for any Methodist church in America. At the time of John Ed’s retirement in June 2008, Frazer had eight Sunday morning worship services and its services were televised nationwide

reaching about 40 million homes.

John Ed has been a sterling athlete over his lifetime. He was an all-state high school basketball player and an outstanding basketball player at Huntington College.

He was consistently ranked #1 in his age division in tennis in Alabama and is in the Alabama Tennis Hall of Fame. He continues to write. I am proud to say that for the last decade his column and mine have been adjacent to each other in the Montgomery Independent.

Dr. Karl Stegall is a legend within the Alabama Methodist Church hierarchy.

He is one of the best known and most loved Methodist ministers to serve in Alabama over the past 50 years. Stegall served with distinction at four separate Methodist churches in Alabama.

He culminated his ministerial career as

woman with the accused being an African American. Both took place in small, segregated, Alabama towns which hosted the county seat. In both accounts, the juries were made up entirely of white men.

The trial and story of the Scottsboro Boys have been made into theatrical plays, a television movie and a documentary, songs, and many books.

Visiting the museum allows guests to learn about the shocking events that surrounded the case. Visitors will also learn the outcome of each of the nine accused youths and how this historical event changed the judicial system.

The Scottsboro Boys Museum is located in the historic Joyce Chapel (circa 1876) at 428 W. Willow Street, Scottsboro.

Museum hours are Wednesday - Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.

Three Great Alabama Preachers

Many of you may be surprised to know that politicians and preachers are often friends while on earth.

They actually run in the same circles in their communities as well as around the state. It has been my pleasure to have known a good many Godly ministers.

During my lifetime here in our beloved state of Alabama, there have been some outstanding ministers, but three men stand out as legendary and will go down in the annals of Alabama history as the three greatest preachers of this generation. All three were Alabama born and bred. They had to have been born and chosen for their calling. Just to be in their presence makes you feel special. They are truly men of God. They are also true southern gentlemen

with a keen sense of humility. These three ministers are Methodist Minister John Ed Mathison, Methodist Minister Karl Stegall, and Baptist Minister Buddy Gray.

I will begin with the youngest first.

Buddy Gray has been the pastor of the mega Baptist Church in Hoover – Hunter Street Baptist Church – for nearly 36 years.

Buddy Gray built this mountain of a church in the heart of Hoover.

He is beloved by his throng of congregates.

He exudes love and humility.

Buddy Gray grew up in Prattville. He knew at 16 that God was calling him to the ministry. He started preaching at rural churches and along the way he served as youth pastor at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in the 1970’s. Hunter Street was in a dying section

with an attendance of 120. Soon after they called Buddy to be their minister, he had the foresight to see that his church needed to be in Hoover, the fastest growing suburban area of Jefferson County.

Today, 36 years later, Buddy’s vision is a sprawling landmark campus with a congregation of 4,500 active members. It is one of the largest and most prosperous churches in Alabama. Leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention refer to Hunter Street Baptist Church as one of the greatest churches in America.

During his career, Buddy Gray has served at the state and national level of the Baptist Convention including two one-year reigns as President of the Alabama Baptist State Convention. He and his wife, Tricia,

pastor of the First Methodist Church of Montgomery. He served as senior minister of this great traditional Methodist church in Cloverdale for 24 years.

Dr. Stegall remains extremely involved in Montgomery Civic affairs. He is an erudite gentleman with impeccable class and manners. He has the most melodious Black Belt southern accent. He is an avid sports fan and a great Alabama historian. He has a myriad of talents and uses them all. He has been a confidante and minister to a great many Alabama governors and Montgomery business leaders.

These three gentlemen are without a doubt three of the greatest ministers in Alabama of this century. I am proud to call them friends.

Unique Town Atop Sand Mountain

DEKALB COUNTY - The population of this one-traffic light town bounces right around 1,000 residents. The rural city encompasses just under five-square miles on top of Sand Mountain. The settlement was founded in the 1880s and established a high school by 1917.

The town’s claim to fame includes: Being known for bringing home a state championship trophy in football almost every year, hosting the National Sacred Harp Singing Convention in 1959, (where noted musicologist Alan Lomax recorded many of the performances), the well-known April 2011 EF4 tornado, and its annual August UFO festival. The town is Fyffe and although small in size it is large in history, interesting facts, and things to do.

It was this month 34 years ago when over 50 people over a two-day period called in to report an unidentified flying object. Fyffe made the New York Times when it reported that 4,000 people were lured to the town hoping to see a UFO after reports of one hit the news. The memory of those sightings is kept at the forefront with a festival featuring hot air

balloons, comfort foods, and local entertainment.

For a small town, it has a surprising number of notable people which includes; Lowell Barron, Alabama state senator; Vestal Goodman, Southern Gospel artist and founding member of the Happy Goodman Family musical group; Charlie Long, former professional football player; Frank O. Slater, Navy sailor killed in World War 2. The USS Slater is named in his honor; and Bobby G. Wood, Tennessee state representative.

Lowell Barron was Mayor of Fyffe from 1968 - 1982 when he was first elected to the Alabama Senate. In 1965 Barron opened a pharmacy in Fyffe after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Auburn University.

Gospel Queen, Vestal Goodman grew

up in Fyffe dreaming of a career as an opera singer. All that changed when she met Howard “Happy” Goodman at a revival in Albertville. The two were wed in 1949 and her career made her a millionaire. She was born in 1929 and passed away in 2003.

She was an active Southern gospel singer from 1949 to 2003.

Charlie Long, born April 6, 1938, played college football as an offensive tackle and guard at the University of Tennessee. In 1961, he joined the Boston Patriots of the American Football League. Career highlights include 2x AFL All-Star in 1962 and 1963.

The USS Slater is a Cannon-class destroyer escort that served in the United States Navy. The vessel was Decommissioned in 1991 after having

served in the Greek Navy as well. The ship is now a museum ship on the Hudson River in Albany, New York.

Slater was designated a National Historic Landmark on March 2, 2012. Slater has been featured in three motion pictures. One of the films was The Guns of Navarone (1961), starring Gregory Peck. Currently, the museum ship is closed for repairs.

Bobby G. Wood was born in Fyffe in 1935. He served as a Republican in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1976 to 2004. He passed away at the age of 87.

Throughout the year tourists will find the quaint town offers a range of shops featuring both new and thrift store items. A variety of unique businesses line Main Street, which includes a bakery where tourists and locals will find more than just sweet treats. In warmer months the laughter of children fills the air at the modest-sized splash pad located behind the school.

Anyone looking for something interesting to do should visit Fyffe, it is somewhere special and worth visiting both during the August festival and throughout the year visiting both during the August festival or throughout the year.

Superintendent Lyles gave Board members an update on happenings within the School System. • The town of Mentone donated another generous donation to Hammondville Baseball Field along with several State Legislators and the State Board of Education. The field is expected to be ready for the Valley Head Baseball team to play this season.

• Congratulated student athlete Ian Baine of the Valley Head High School Tigers Football Team. He had a record-setting season where he rushed for 2,865 yards, which makes him the DeKalb County Single Season rushing yardage record holder. He also led the state for rushing yards in all classifications this season and ranked 13th nationally.

• Congratulated the 2A State Football Champions, Fyffe Red Devils on winning their 6th state title. Brodie Hicks was the Championship MVP. He rushed for 235 yards on 45 carries, scored 5 touchdowns, and scored 30 points.

This set four new records for a state championship game.

• Congratulated all the Plainview Basketball Teams on their DeKalb County Basketball Championships.

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.-- The Plainview Varsity Boys (28-6) defeated Glencoe (18-13), 83-46 in the Regional Semifinal game on Monday, at the Pete Matthews Coliseum, on the campus of Jacksonville State University.

The score was only tied once during the game, with Plainview taking the 20-6 lead in the first. The Bears

outscored Glencoe, 20-16 in the second period, to take the 40-24 lead into intermission. After intermission, the Plainview Bears scored 21 to Glencoe’s 18 points in the third period. In the final period, Plainview outscored Glencoe, 22-4, making the final 83-46.

Garrett Morgan led Piedmont with 19 points and six rebounds.

Luke Smith led the Plainview Bears with 20 points and had six

rebounds. Jonah Williams followed with 18 points. Landon White had 15 points and seven rebounds for the game. Dylan Haymon had 14 points and two rebounds.

Levi Brown had 7 points and four rebounds. Joseph Hutchenson, Owner Wilborn, and Ben Chandler each added 3 points to the score.

JACKSONVILLE, ALA.-- The Lanett Panthers (24-2) defeated the Ider Lady Hornets (22-11) in the Class 2A Northeast Regional Finals at the Pete Mathews Coliseum at Jacksonville State University on Tuesday, February 21.

The Lanett Panthers took the 13-11 lead in the first period.

Ider scored 14 points in the second period, to give Lanett the slight 28-25 lead going into intermission.

Ider outscored the Panthers 13-8 in the third period. Lanett scored 18 points to Ider’s 8 in the final period of play, to

campus of Jacksonville State University.

The Lady Bears trailed by three, to end the first quarter with a score of 14-11. In the second quarter, the Lady Bears scored 23 -13 points over Ohatchee, to go into intermission with a 34-27 advantage.

In the third, Ohatchee outscored the Lady Bears 19-17.

The Lady Bears answered back outscoring Ohatchee 23-7 in the fourth quarter.

Throughout the game, the score was tied five times with the lead changing five times.

Jorda Crook led Ohatchee with 46 of the team’s 53 points.

She also had 12 rebounds for the game.

Sawyer Kate Hulgan led the Plainview Lady Bears with five threepointers, with 29 points. Saydi Jackson scored 15 points and had nine rebounds for the game. (25-5) in the Class 3A Northeast Regional Semifinals at the Pete Mathews Coliseum of Jacksonville State University on Monday, February 20.

Geraldine controlled the second period out scoring Piedmont 19-9, to go into intermission with a 34-23 advantage.
