ALABAMA--Voters will return to the polls on November 8 for the 2022 General election where several major races will be decided.

Among the key races in Alabama is the governor’s race, with incumbent Gov. Kay Ivey (R), facing Democratic challenger, Yolanda

Flowers.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Republican Katie Britt will face Democratic nominee Will Boyd for the Alabama open U.S. Senate seat, held by retiring Sen. Richard Shelby.

Voters will also decide if they would like to ratify the Alabama Constitution that will remove racist language and repealed

Fall Back Once More

ALABAMA-- At 2 a.m., this Sunday, clocks in the U.S. will “fall back” one hour as daylight savings time ends, beginning winter’s dark evenings.

Many have debated this tradition.

In March the U.S. Senate passed legislation, unanimously that would make daylight saving time permanent starting in 2023, a move promoted

by supporters advocating brighter afternoons and more economic activity.

After years of attempts, the Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill to permanently adopt daylight saving time, after the state Senate passed the same measure. Gov. Kay Ivey signed the bill into law on May 13, 2021.

However, states currently do not have the authority to change themselves.

FORT PAYNE, Ala.-- (Full Video on Southern Torch Facebook) The Fort Payne City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 1.

The Council granted the activity permit for the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade on December 9th beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The parade route will begin on Gault Avenue and go from 18th Street North to 3rd Street South.

A Public Hearing was held to receive comments on the proposed vacation of portions of the rights-of-way easement on Grand Avenue and 7th Street North.

A search party was formed by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) on Saturday.

Fischer Rescue Squad, Valley Head Police Department, DeKalb County EMA, canine units, and local fire departments aided in the search in the wooded areas where she was last seen.

A $1,000 reward is being offered by Makenna’s family for information that leads to her whereabouts. She is 5ft 6 inches and weighs around 100-120 pounds.

Scottsboro Starbucks Unionizes

a Birmingham Starbucks who unionized in May, they filed a union election.

The store and its employees began the vote to unionize in July. There were eight votes in favor of a union, eight votes against a union, and four challenged votes.

On October 31, the National Labor Relations Board updated the vote count. The new update counts nine votes in

favor, eight votes against, and three challenged votes.

The North Alabama Area Labor Council (NAALC) congratulated the Scottsboro Starbucks on winning the union election in a press release by the organization on Tuesday.

The NAALC said, “We stand ready to support these workers in whatever way possible.”

According to the Scottsboro Police Department, a Jackson County man was indicted on rape and sexual abuse charges on Tuesday.

Police say a Jackson County grand jury indicted Johasaphat LSean Ellison of rape in the second degree, sexual abuse in the second degree, and furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Police Department says these charges stem from an alleged incident of sexual assault involving a minor.

Ellison was

arrested on Tuesday, November 1 and booked into the Jackson County Jail on a $30,300 bond. He was released from jail Tuesday night.

SECTION, Ala.-- On October 28th, 2022, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Agents and Deputies, along with Officers from the Section Police Department, executed a search warrant on County Road 48 in Section, Alabama.

Present at the residence were Sandra Darlene Walden, age 66 of Section, and Alice Rachel Cobb, age 42 of Section, both were detained while the search was in progress.

During the search,

one baggie of Methamphetamine was located that weighed approximately 29.5 grams, along with digital scales, baggies, and other items of Drug Paraphernalia.

Additional Methamphetamine was located elsewhere in the residence, along with Methamphetamine Pipes and other Drug Paraphernalia.

These items were collected and both Walden and Cobb were arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail

without incident.

Walden was charged with Trafficking a Controlled SubstanceMethamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The bond was set at $25, 500.

Cobb was charged with a Bond Revocation, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled SubstanceMethamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The bond was set at $3,000.

Boys Museum Celebrates Its Official Reopening

Scottsboro, AL (October 31, 2022) – The newly remodeled Scottsboro Boys Museum will host a public event on Wednesday, November 9, at 1:00 pm to celebrate its official reopening. The museum closed in 2020 at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, then stayed shut for over two years due to the extensive redesign and the untimely death of its executive director, Shelia Washington. The Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce will prepare the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Admission to the museum will be free for the day.

The Scottsboro Boys Museum tells the story of nine young Blacks who were falsely accused of raping two white women aboard a freight train they had hopped during the Depression. They were tried and sentenced to death in Scottsboro in

April 1931. Although the U.S. Supreme Court twice overturned their guilty verdicts, the state continued to reindict. In all, the nine spent a total of 102 years in prison.

The museum is housed in the historic Joyce Chapel and tells the complex story of how nine young African Americans became a symbol for economic and racial oppression and an international phenomenon. Cities across the globe held protest rallies demanding Alabama to “Free the Scottsboro Boys.” Luminaries such as Albert Einstein, James Cagney, and Sherwood Anderson were only a few of hundreds of well-known individuals who signed petitions or wrote letters urging the state to release prisoners. Museum designer and interim director Thomas Reidy states that, “by the mid-1930s the case

On April 30, 2022 deputies with the Jackson and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene of a double homicide at a home on County Road 354.

When authorities arrived at the home, they found Horace “Bimbo” Garren, 68, and Christopher Horace Garren, 44 dead from gunshot wounds.

There was a vibrant cultural response, as well. Poet Langston Hughes wrote four poems and a one-act play about Scottsboro that sold thousands of copies here and abroad.

Lithographs, paintings, and cartoons featuring the trials proliferated throughout the decade. Lead Belly and others produced music about the prisoners that played across the country. To some degree, the case inspired Alabama-born Nelle Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In 2010, “Scottsboro Boys, The Musical,” was nominated for ten Tony Awards.

Senator Arthur Orr, Senator Steve Livingston, and Mayor Jim McCamy will share remarks. The museum will have refreshments and special offers on merchandise to celebrate the day.

Pisgah Man Changes Not Guilty Plea

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala.-- A man who pleaded not guilty to the shooting and killing of two people, has withdrawn his original plea of not guilty.

Matthew Edward Garren, 34, originally pleaded not guilty but has since changed his plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, stating that he “did not

Garren was charged with murder and was indicted on June 15. He signed a plea of not guilty on June 23.

With the plea change, Garren has been ordered to undergo a mental evaluation hearing scheduled for November 16.

Garren remains in the custody of the Jackson County Jail.

Waterless Flowers Events

While browsing through Boom Town Makers Market in Fort Payne customers will find, sprinkled among the merchandise, various arrangements of flowers that need no water. These lifelike looking artificial arrangements are the handiwork of Lori Holland. While most waterless flowers come in silk flower bouquets, Holland’s realistic looking flowers are made from the root of a plant and are referred to as wooden flowers.

The plant that produces these natural looking flowers is a tapioca plant, the root system is used to create what is called sola wood. The plant is only grown in tropical climates and is also referred to as; cassava, manioc, arrowroot, and yuca (not to be confused with the yucca plant). The species of plant is extremely drought resistant.

Once the large, trunk-like root system is cut from the plant it is peeled and cut into very thin layers and then shaped into flowers, this process is done strictly by hand.

The petals look and feel softer than wood.

Once formed, the flowers are 100 percent biodegradable. Since they are organic, they are advertised to last a lifetime only under the proper care.

“They are not made to be kept

outside or placed where they could get wet,” said Holland.

“Some customers purchase them for Decoration Day, but only leave them at the cemetery for a short time and then retrieve them.” It is also best to keep then out of direct sunlight. To keep the flowers free of dust accumulation, use a hairdryer on the coolest setting and keep several inches between the hairdryer and the flowers.

Water makes the root malleable enough to form the thin layers into the shape of a flower. Holland purchases the finished flower product and then spends several days painting the product. “It takes several days because when I layer the colors then I have to allow time for each layer to dry properly,” said Holland.

Holland said her customers who are brides choose this type of arrangement because they want to

have their keepsake bridal bouquet with them a lifetime. Many of Holland’s flower orders are custom made. “Some brides incorporate the colors into their bouquet that they know will also look lovely in the décor of their new home,” said Holland.

“Anything that can be done with a real flower I can replicate with my sola wood flowers,” said Holland.

“I can make all of the flowers for a wedding, even the boutonnieres.

I have also made corsages for homecomings and decorative wreaths.”

FP Holds Health Fair Many Alabamians face grave uncertainty when it comes to health care. That’s especially true in DeKalb County, where more than 9,000 adults are uninsured, according to U.S. Census data. Alabama Arise’s Cover Alabama coalition will host a health fair and health care panel in Fort Payne this weekend to help provide residents in northeast Alabama with access to health services and information.

Cover Alabama will host a health fair at the VFW Post Hall in Fort Payne on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include a special presentation and panel discussion on health care access during

lunch at 11 a.m. Media members are welcome and invited to the entire event.

Health care providers, advocacy organizations and other community groups will be at the event to provide health services and information, including blood pressure screenings, HIV testing, flu shots and more. The health fair also will feature a lunchtime health care presentation and panel discussion featuring representatives from Alabama Arise, CED Mental Health Center, the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama and the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA).

The Sunshine Protection Act was first introduced in 2018 by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL).

The Act would eliminate the changing of clocks to standard time for four months. If enacted, this will be the last time that we will “fall back” in November and will have a full year of daylight savings time, instead of only eight months. This bill will not alter or change time zones.

Sen. Rubio stated that studies have shown that making daylight saving time permanent would reduce crime, encourage kids to play outside, and lower the risk of heart attacks and car accidents.

There will be ten constitutional amendments on the ballot for voters to consider statewide.

Amendment 1 Amendment 1, or Aniah’s Law, would change Section 16 of the constitution, which allows changes to those who could make bail.

Aniah Blanchard was a college student who was abducted and murdered. The man charged in her

death was out on bond after being charged with several violent crimes.

This change will give judges more discretion to deny bail to people charged with violent crimes. It will add murder, kidnapping, rape, sodomy, domestic violence, robbery, aggravated child abuse, terrorism, and sexual torture.

Amendment 2 This amendment is part of the state’s effort to expand broadband access.

It will give local governments the authority to grant federal funds to public or private companies to expand access to high-speed internet.

Amendment 3 This amendment would require the governor to notify the attorney general and the victim’s family before commuting a death sentence. This bill was sponsored by Sen. Steve Livingston (R) from Scottsboro.

Amendment 4 This amendment would prevent lawmakers from making election procedure changes within six months of an election.

To say that she will be unbeatable for reelection to her post as head of the PSC would be an understatement.

Twinkle Cavanaugh is probably the best known political figure in the state going forward in the post Richard Shelby/ Kay Ivey era. She has run statewide numerous times and has been successful in most of those races. When you run that many times, you build a grassroots organization. Then you add that she has been Chairman of the Republican Party and a loyal supporter of popular

past Republican presidents. She has not let any grass grow under her feet this year.

She has watered that grassroots organization during this off year with one-on-one visits, especially to the remote rural counties of the state. Her diligence will pay off in future years.

She is still young and a good bet to be governor or U.S. Senator one day.

Folks in Montgomery and throughout the state are glad to see State Senator Billy Beasley run again, successfully, for another term. He is one of the most wellliked and respected members of the upper chamber in the State Capitol.

Billy is the only white Democrat in the Alabama Senate.

Do not bet on his not running again in 2026. He is the youngest looking 82 year old I have ever seen and his brother Jere is the youngest 85 year old I have ever seen. They must have pretty good genes.

This 2022 Election Year in Alabama has been monumental and memorable. Any gubernatorial year is big in the state.

It is the brass ring of Alabama politics to be governor.

However, the race to succeed our Senior Senator Richard Shelby has been the marquee contest.

This year will be the last hurrah for our two leading political figures in the state.

Senator Richard Shelby is retiring after 36 years in the U.S. Senate at age 88. Governor Kay Ivey will be elected to her final term as Governor at 78.

An observation that occurred to me during the year that many of you may not know or realize is the power that Jimmy Rane, the legendary successful businessman from Abbeville, possesses. He is known to many Alabamians as the famous friendly giant sitting atop a horse as the Yella Fella on the ads of yesteryear promoting his Great

Southern Wood Company.

In my years of observing Alabama politics, I do not believe there has been an individual that has been the closest confidant and friend to the two most powerful political people in the state. Senator Shelby and Governor Ivey are unquestionably the two most powerful political people in the state, but they are arguably two of the most important political figures in modern Alabama political history. If you sat both Ivey and Shelby down and asked them to tell you their best friend and confidant, they both would probably say Jimmy Rane.

Governor Ivey and Rane have been

friends and allies since their college days at Auburn University 60 years ago. Shelby and Rane have been bonded for at least 36 years. As busy as Senator Shelby has been as one of the most important leaders in Washington and world affairs, the last 10 years a week does not go by that Shelby and Rane do not talk. Rane knows when Shelby has a cold before his wife Annette knows.

Rane has been Ivey’s and Shelby’s benefactor and ally for not what they can do for him. He does not get anything out of his relationship with Shelby and Ivey.

He is just their friend.

He is also loyal to his hometown of Abbeville and Henry County. The Great

Southern Wood is the main thing in Abbeville and a mainstay for the entire Wiregrass.

His benevolence to his hometown is unparalleled.

Another development I have watched this year is some good old fashioned hardnosed hard work on the campaign trail by some of the 2022 candidates. It is understandable that those running for office on this year’s ballot would be on the campaign trail.

However, one Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, the President of the Public Service Commission, has canvassed the rural counties of Alabama more extensively than most of the successful candidates running

Fyffe Defeats Sylvania in second-half shutout

FYFFE, Ala. -- In a highly-anticipated matchup of DeKalb County rivals, Fyffe used its run game and defensive line pressure to pull away from Sylvania for a 35-14 victory Friday night at Paul Benefield Stadium.

The win marked a milestone win and new state record for the Red Devils – a remarkable 12 consecutive seasons of 10 wins.

Smith completed two passes to Scott for first downs, but Hicks sacked Smith to force Sylvania to punt. Fyffe moved down the field with tough running by

Scott picked up another 12 yards on a pass from Smith, before using outside position to grab his second touchdown of the game and the 14-7 lead after the PAT. Fyffe then used a

10-play drive capped by a touchdown pass from Blake Dobbins to Hunter Machen for the 14-14 tie with 3:12 left in the second quarter.

Fyffe adjusted its defense on Sylvania’s next possession and forced the Rams to punt. The score remained 14-14 at the half.

Fyffe received the second-half kickoff and was forced to punt.

The Red Devils returned the favor and forced a Sylvania punt on its opening possession of the half.

Logan Anderson dragged a Sylvania defender 25 yards on a 38-yard gain up the

advantage to close out the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Cherokee scored from 1-yard out.

The extra point attempt failed, to make the score 7-6 with 10:29 remaining in the half. Bennett Blanks scored from 3-yards out to give the Fort Payne Wildcats the 14-6 lead with 7:46 left in the second quarter. The Warriors nailed a 25-yard field goal, making the score 14-9 at halftime.

Blanks scored his second touchdown of

the night when he dove into the endzone, to give the Wildcats the 21-9 lead, with 9:52 remaining in the third quarter. Kaden Dubose scored from 3-yards out to extend the Wildcats lead to 28-9 with 5:53 remaining in the third.

Cherokee County scored with 8:17 left in the fourth quarter, to narrow the Wildcat lead to 28-16.

Varnadore found Blanks on a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats the 35-16 cushion.

Fort Payne will host Decatur in the first round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Playoffs on Friday night.

Fyffe opens the playoffs by hosting Red Bay, while Sylvania hosts Fayette County in its first-round matchup.
