DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Fisher Rescue and their team for spending 8+ hours of Saturday to help search for Makenna. The team had members from Athens Al, Murfreesboro Tn, and all-over North Alabama. Two canine search teams searched as well.

DeKalb County Sheriff, Nick Welden, and the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office would like to let Makenna know she is not in any trouble at all. They only want to see Makenna back safe with the family and friends that love her so dearly.

RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- The DeKalb County Board of Education held its first Native American Cultural Event on Tuesday, October 25 at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center.

The event was for students across DeKalb County, grades K-8, who participate in the Indian Education Program.

Fyffe and Collinsville students were not able to participate due to a E-learning day. A event will be scheduled for those students in the future.

The Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama and the UCAN Tribe educated students on several different aspects of their culture.

Activities included stamp bracelets, wood leaf necklaces, and a artifact dig.

The students visited various booths set up throughout the AgriBusiness Center, including: • Pine Needle Basktery and Weaving by Brittney from DeSoto State Park • Cherokee Village Diorama and Artifacts with Walking Bear of Cherolee Tribes of North Alabama • Drumming, Dancing

Valley Head, Ala. — Makenna Joy Purvis, 19, of Valley Head was last seen on September, 22.

Purvis is 5-feet-6 inches and weighs about 100-120 pounds. She has red hair and hazel eyes.

As of October 26, Makenna is still missing.

Makenna’s family and friends are very worried about her. They ask that if Makenna sees this article, she comes home or calls someone to just let them know she is safe.

Over the weekend, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Investigators and Deputies met with Fisher Rescue Team, Valley Head Police Department, Mentone Police Department, DeKalb County EMA, and local Fire Departments and searched the wooded area where Makenna was

Kenneth ‘Bozo’ Hammond Passes at 90 Kenneth (Bozo) Hammond Sr. - 90, of Valley Head, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, October22, 2022 at his residence.

Kenneth was born on November 14, 1931. He served in the Korean War, was a graduate of Troy University, and was a lifelong politician. He is fondly remembered for being the mayor of Valley Head and always trying to better his hometown community.

Customers Arrive At 6:00am Jackson County Crash

SCOTTSBORO, ALA - For 18 years Sherrell Frederick has been getting to work at midnight to prepare for opening her shop at 6:00 a.m. Frederick owns Variety Bake Shop on “the square” in downtown Scottsboro.

The bake shop has been in the same location since the 1940s. When former owner Fred Casteel passed away and Frederick found out the shop was available, she decided to try her hand at it. “I’ve loved baking since I was just eight years old,” said Frederick. “I had never owned my own business prior to this, but I was determined to make it work.”

Most days the bake shop runs out of edibles by 10:00 a.m. “I put a big sign in the window as soon a we run out of food so customers don’t have to get out of their cars and come in to find out we’ve ran out,” said Frederick.

Frederick says her number one seller are the sausage rolls.

Casteel sold them as well, but not nearly as many as Frederick sells. “Casteel sold about three dozen sausage rolls daily,” said Frederick. “I sell anywhere from 60 to 100 dozen per day.”

item is Frederick’s Southern Pecan Praline Cake. The cake is a single layer with pecan glaze poured into handmade holes to create a moistness that’s worth writing home about.

Getting to work at midnight is a must when there are 60 dozen doughnuts to be made. Frederick has the typical glazed doughnuts, but also sells doughnuts filled with cream cheese, white butter cream, custard, and more.

“I don’t skimp on my filling for my doughnuts,” said Frederick.

On a weekly basis Frederick and her team crank out three to four hundred dozen cookies. During holidays that number increases to five to six hundred dozen. Other items typical of any bakery include breakfast biscuits with meat, coffee, pastries, candy, and cakes.

Breakfast plates are also served and the shop has a dining room. “We call it the gathering room,” said

Frederick. “We have customers who have been comin here for breakfast all 18 years that I have been here.

We know them on a first name basis, they are just like family to us.” One customer got a plate named after him, the Jim Ed plate comes with biscuits, gravy, eggs, meat, and tomato slices.

The business is a family operation with Frederick’s daughter, grandson, niece, cousin, and sisterin-law all working there. Frederick’s mother also helped before her passing in 2020.

The real 2022 election was held in May and June when the Republican Primary took place. Winning the Republican Primary is tantamount to election in Alabama.

Just because the real 2022 election was held in May instead of November does not mean it is not an important election.

It is a very important election. All of our constitutional statewide offices are being elected for the next four years, including Governor, Attorney General, State Agriculture Commissioner, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, State

Treasurer and State Auditor.

Governor Kay Ivey is the Republican nominee for Governor. She is seeking her second full term.

This will probably be Kay’s last hurrah in Alabama. She will win 60 to 40.

State Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate is the Republican nominee for this important Alabama post. He will be reelected 60 to 40. He did not even have an opponent in the Republican Primary.

Attorney General Steve Marshall is seeking his second term. He is a solid conservative Republican and will win easily.

Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth is going to be reelected to his second term on November 8. Like Marshall, there is no doubt that he is conservative.

On Wednesday, a two-vehicle crash near Skyline left one dead and sent two injured to the hospital.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Michael D. Cooper, 65, of Bridgeport, was fatally injured when his 2007 Ford Ranger crashed

into a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. Cooper was driving his vehicle.

ALEA says the wreck occurred in the morning on Jackson County Road 33 near Jackson County Road

191 north of Skyline.

Cooper’s vehicle left the roadway and overturned after the impact. Cooper was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 4Runner’s driver, as well as a passenger riding with Cooper in the Ford were transported to Huntsville Hospital after the collision.

ALEA continues to investigate the collision.

Macklin Baptist Church WalkAThon

By David Hall Reporter At 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, Macklin Baptist Church will host a Relay For Life WalkAThon.

Proceeds from the

event will go to the American Cancer Society (ACS) to help with cancer research.

There will be concessions at the event, and the money from this will also go to cancer research.

They are also from the same county. It would be interesting if they faced off against each other in the 2026 Governor’s race.

Young Boozer will be elected to his third term as State Treasurer. He served two consecutive four-year terms, waited three years, took over from John McMillan a year ago, and will win another full term on November 8. He has done a tremendous job as Treasurer and is probably the most qualified person to ever serve as Treasurer in my lifetime. He will more than likely have the longest tenure as State Treasurer in state history.

Two young Republicans were elected to constitutional offices in June, Wes Allen as Secretary of State and Andrew Sorrell

as State Auditor.

Both have bright futures in Alabama politics.

Even though he is only 46, Wes Allen has already spent 15 years in elected office. He was Probate Judge of Pike County for 11 years and State Representative for Pike and Dale for 4 years. Secretary of State is an important post in state government.

There will be jockeying among Ainsworth, Marshall, Pate, Allen and Sorrell to see who gets the most votes on November 8 as all are eyeing the 2026 races. All have Libertarian opponents.

Forty-year old Katie Britt will be elected to her first of many to come six-year terms as our United States Senator. She will more than likely be the top vote getter on November 8.

Melinda Wooden of Macklin Baptist Church contacted the ACS about Jackson County’s local WalkAThon. When she learned it was not returning, she took steps with her church and the ACS to ensure the WalkAThon would remain in Jackson County.

This led to Macklin Baptist Church hosting the event.

Believe it or not, our 2022 General Election is upon us, November 8 to be exact It seems to be going under the radar screen of most Alabama voters .There will be a record breaking low voter turnout because there are really no contested statewide races.

Why? Because we are a one party state when it comes to state offices. All 21 of our state elective offices are held by Republicans. The Democratic party does not field serious candidates because it is a foregone conclusion that a Democrat cannot win an elective statewide races in the Heart of Dixie. The best they can hope for is 40%.

Thus, the Democratic candidates have no money to spend because nobody takes them seriously, and the Republican candidates, who are

For those of you who do vote, we have some important Constitutional Amendments on the ballot. Our original 1901 Constitution may be one of the most flawed and is the most amended in the nation. There is outdated, overtly racist language in our Constitution that has no relevance in today’s world and needs amending out.

The Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform, a group of outstanding Alabama leaders, has worked diligently to update our antiquated Constitution. I would encourage a “Yes” vote for the first constitutional amendment on the November ballot.

Local Business Receives Support for Wreaths National Recognition Across America

FORT PAYNE, ALA - Fort Payne Footworks & Outdoors has been a Fort Payne landmark since 2007, owner Jack Davidson has kept the store in operation with his modern thinking and promotions. Davidson started his own clothing brand Little River Hat and Clothing Company. His line of apparel is sold in nearly 50 brick-andmortar retail shops across the southeast.

One thing that prompted Davidson to brand his line “Little River” was to draw attention to the area.

“Whenever people go on vacation, they want to bring back a souvenir from the area they visited,” said Davidson. “People who visit our area are no different, they want to remember one of the things we are known for, such as Little River.

I think it’s important to promote the area and

have people wear apparel that says Little River on it advertises our area.”

Davidson said one thing that has really helped to make his apparel line popular is the fact that Walker Hayes was seen wearing a Little River hat in an interview on ESPN. Walker Hayes is an American pop singer and songwriter.

Hayes has charted multiple singles on Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts; his highest-peaking is “Fancy Like”, which reached number one on both charts in late 2021.

Davidson met Hayes at a songwriter’s convention in Muscle Shoals about a year ago and the two have become friends and have been conducting business together ever since. “We work well together,” said Davidson. “We both

COLLINSVILLE, Ala.-- The North Sand Mountain Bisons were able to score two touchdowns in the second quarter, taking a 12-0 lead with 1:41 left in the half. The passing of quarterback Landon Keller, especially to Blake Hall, led the Bison to the lead.

Elite 8 Volleyball Teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Three local Volleyball Teams will be participating in the AHSAA 52nd Elite 8 Volleyball Championships at Birmingham CrossPlex and adjacent Bill Harris Arena on October 25-27.

Geraldine and Plainview will be representing DeKalb County in Class 3A. Fyffe will represent DeKalb County in

pass reception for 2 yards. On special teams, he had a kickoff return of 43 yards and he helped to flip field position with 4 punts averaging 38 yards.

On defense, he broke up several passes including one in the fourth quarter on a fourth down that would have given North Sand a chance to tie the Panthers.

McAteer passed for 73 yards and ran for 43 yards. Eli Griggs had an interception that ended another Bison fourth-quarter drive.

Collinsville secured the third seed for the playoffs. The Panthers will face the Valley Head Tigers at home Thursday, for the final regular season game for both teams.

Class 2A. Plainview is the only remaining DeKalb County team in contention.

Plainview, (60-11) is ranked 1st in Class 3A, Area 14. On October 24, in the first game of the Elite 8, the Lady Bears defeated Carbon Hill (3-0). The Lady Bears defeated Houston Academy Raiders (28-15) from Dothan, they will face Saint Luke’s in the Final Four. At press time the game was still in progress.

Sylvania Finishes Second in Region

The Sylvania Rams locked up second place in its region and earned the right to host a first-round playoff game by defeating Westbrook Christian 45-22 Friday night.

Braiden Thomas led the Rams with 184 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Westbrook Christian got on the board first with a run off right tackle by Maximus Jones at 9:07 in the first quarter. The

PAT was good for the 7-0 lead.

A bad snap on Sylvania’s opening drive put the Rams behind the chains and ultimately forced a punt for the change of possession. Sylvania’s defense held and forced the Warriors to punt.

Thomas picked up 50 yards while breaking tackles to move the ball to the Westbrook 35-yard line, and quarterback Jaxon Smith connected with Josh Scott for the 35-yard touchdown to even the score at 7-0 after the

PAT. After exchanging punts, the Rams defense forced another three-and-out and moved down the field behind Thomas’ rushing. Sophomore back Aiden Parham

finished the drive early in the second quarter for the 14-0 lead after Conner Andrade’s PAT. Westbrook fumbled the snap on its next possession, and Sylvania tacked on a field goal with 6:47

left in the half.

The Rams’ defense forced a Warriors punt from its own end zone, and Thomas followed blockers down the right sideline to the 5-yard line before punching it in for a score. Sylvania led 24-7 at the half.

Westbrook found life in the second half by blocking Sylvania’s punt and recovering the ball, but fumbled away the ball near the Rams goal line.

Parham added a 65-yard score for the 31-7 lead, and Westbrook returned the favor with a

33-yard touchdown pass to make the score 31-15 after a two-point conversion.

Thomas scored again on a 47-yard run and the 38-15 advantage. The Rams then recovered a Warriors fumble on the kickoff. Parham drove it in from seven yards out for another Sylvania score and the 45-15 lead.

Westbrook added a late touchdown to set the final score at 45-22.

Sylvania squares off with undefeated, 2A, No. 1 Fyffe Friday night.
