FORT PAYNE, Ala.-Southern Torch is pleased to welcome Tommy Daniels and Steve Malcolm as the

newest radio personalities for 101-7 The Torch. The Torch radio station is a regional service of Southern Torch that carries mix hits and is home to The Rick & Bubba Show.

Both gentlemen bring a wealth of experience to the

station.

Tommy Daniels attended Gadsden State, coming to the school as a left-handed pitcher for the baseball program. As a typical jock, when they asked him to pick a major, he said P.E. He was told that involved a lot of science classes. So, he said “No thanks!”

“The school gave me a book of other majors to choose from and I saw radio and thought it sounded fun” stated Daniels. “ Little did I know, it would become my life’s work. That was 37 years ago.”

Daniels started his career in Gadsden at Q-104, then went to WZYP in Hunstville, and then moved on to Chattanooga, the Gulf Coast, Birmingham, and Atlanta. However, he has always found that small market radio is real radio.

“I have found a home at Southern Torch. I have told the owners that if they want me to leave, they will have to call the police and have me taken out in cuffs. I’ve

also told them that my retirement plan is to be taken out in a body bag, I am here to stay” concluded Daniels.

Tommy Daniels will entertain listeners on 101-7 The Torch from 11 a.m - 1 p.m each weekday.

By Marla Ballard Reporter SCOTTSBORO, ALA. – Veterinarians Tim Crowell and Michael Lowrey have a combined experience of 70 years in veterinarian medicine.

Two years ago, they purchased their own clinic where they treat domesticated animals, mainly canines and felines. Both men are passionate about animal care and the benefits it brings to both the animal and its owners.

Crowell said, “I grew up around a large variety of farm animals and that lifestyle pointed me in the direction of becoming a veterinarian.” While in the first grade Lowrey wrote on his schoolwork, that he wanted to be a dog doctor. Lowrey said “I was always curious about animal anatomy.

Whenever dad gutted a fish, I always wanted to know about the function of everything I saw, I would always ask, ‘What does it do?’”

Speaking on the importance of veterinarian care for pets Lowrey said, “Some pet owners don’t realize that veterinarian care is about more than just their pet’s wellbeing.

There are many diseases that can be passed on to them and their children from their pets. Diseases that could be avoided

with the preventative care a veterinarian offers.”

Zoonosis is an infectious disease that has transitioned from a vertebrate animals to humans. Zoonotic pathogens can be bacterial, viral, or parasitic. Some of the common zoonotic diseases include; rabies, ringworm, roundworm, hookworm, toxoplasmosis, scabies, and harvest mites.

The CDC NEWSROOM released a media report on zoonotic diseases stating, “Every year tens of thousands of Americans get sick from diseases spread between animals and people. CDC’s One Health Office is collaborating with partners across the government to bring together disease detectives, laboratorians, physicians, and veterinarians to prevent those illnesses,” said Casey Barton Behravesh, M.S., D.V.M., Dr. P.H., director One Health Office, CDC. Both Crowell and Lowrey give this advice to pet owners, “Doctor Google does not have a veterinarian degree and whatever your veterinarian advises, do what they say.” Animals suffer from many illnesses that affect humans, such as cancer and kidney failure.

Preventative testing (bloodwork) can cost nearly $200 dollars, but in the long run, it will most likely save money. While it is best to have bloodwork done on an annual basis, testing done at least every two years might prevent a serious disease from taking hold.

While all animal vaccinations are important, the Parvovirus is the world’s most common canine infectious disease. Doctor Crowell said, “If you walk through a park and you step where a dog with parvo defecated several months earlier and then you take the shoes you were wearing and place them on your porch and then several months later your puppy licks those boots, your pet can still contract parvo.” The parvovirus can survive in the environment for up to nine years, including the ground and soil. It can also withstand most household cleaning products with bleach being the exception.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Ryan Wade, age 40, stabbed Damien Blaze Wade, age 21, outside a home on Jackson

Flat Rock.

The stabbing was reported around 4 a.m. on Friday. When deputies arrived, they found Damien Wade, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and his father Steven Wade.

Steven Wade was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail, where he currently remains.

Bond for Steven has been set at $150,000.

3 Arrested After Scottsboro Tattoo Shop Search

A Scottsboro tattoo shop was searched leading to the arrest of three individuals.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said several drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on site at SkinWork Tattoo Shop during their search.

The warrant to search the tattoo shop was served by JCSO narcotics agents and deputies along with officers from the Scottsboro Police Department.

Meth, Alprazolam, Hydrocodone, Suboxone, Diazepam

and marijuana were found by JCSO narcotics agents, according to the sheriff’s office.

Ashley Wayne Kimbrell, age 42, of Scottsboro was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substancemeth, Alprazolam, Suboxone, Diazepam, and Hydrocodone and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ryan Elizabeth Thurmond, age 27, of Scottsboro was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substancemeth and Alprazolam, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and

possession of drug paraphernalia.

Stacey Michelle Stephens (Kimbrell), age 41, of Fort Payne was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance-Alprazolam, meth, and suboxone along with possession of drug paraphernalia.

The three of them were taken to the Jackson County Jail after their arrest. The following Monday, only Stephens was still being held at the county jail on an $8,000 bond. Kimbrell and Thurmond were released on $13,000 and $7,000 bonds respectively.

Pete the Cat Back to School Strolled into Town Winners

FORT PAYNE, ALA.--The fourth annual Pete the Cat Day, sponsored by Fort Payne Main Street was held Saturday, August 6 at the Coal and Iron building.

James Dean the creator of Pete the Cat children’s character and the author of many of the Pete the Cat books was onsite to visit and sign Pete merchandise to over 700 fans.

Families from as far away as Louisiana and South Carolina enjoyed art activities including face painting, drawing, building a Pete Banjo, book

readings, and more.

Merchants in downtown Fort Payne also got involved with activities at their businesses.

Dean, a Fort Payne native, who now lives in Athens, Georgia came up with the idea of the feline character in 1999. In 2006, along with writer Eric Litwin, they published the first book called “The Misadventures of Pete the Cat”.

In 2011, his wife Kimberly started writing with him and they now have over 60 books.

Connie Fuller, Fort Payne Main Street Director, said the idea of Pete the Cat Day was part of an idea to recognize people from Fort Payne that has been successful but have not forgotten their hometown.

Pete the Cat Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in August.

Cochran (38) is a Tuscaloosa resident, husband, and father of two. His primary reason for running is the cost of everything rising rapidly over the last few years due to federal government overspending and overreach.

Jim sold the Centreville Press in 1985, but continued to write his marvelous column.

Less than two months later Joab Thomas, President of the University of Alabama and a longtime friend, called to ask Jim what he was planning on doing.

Oakley replied, “I thought I would take up fishing.”

Thomas told him he had been thinking that if he could find someone who had worked in the real world and really knew the newspaper business to come and teach students, it would be an asset to the journalism department.

That began a career at the University of Alabama that would last 33 years. He started off teaching journalism, then became the Director of Freshman Orientation of all University of

Alabama students and culminated with being Head of Placement Services for the College of Communications. He helped hundreds of Alabama graduates find their first jobs in communications, TV, radio, digital and print media. Many are famous and most point to Jim Oakley as their mentor.

The post where he had the most impact was as Director of Freshman Orientation. He greeted and made to feel at home thousands of freshman students.

He welcomed each and every one of them as though he was their grandfather.

He amazingly remembered them all by name and where they were from and their parents’ names.

I will never forget the day I first met Jim. I knew who he was. He was legendary. He knew me from the legislature. I was

By Steve Flowers Jim Oakley A legend in Alabama newspaper, educational, and political lore, Jim Oakley of Centreville, turned 87 last month.

Jim is known statewide as the legendary owner, publisher, and editor of the Centreville Press newspaper.

However, he has also been intertwined with Alabama politics for over six decades.

If you only counted Jim Oakley, Jr.’s service to his city, Centreville, and his county, Bibb, he would be an icon. In addition, when you add his 33 years as an assistant dean and head of placement services at the University of Alabama, it qualifies him in my book and a good many Alabamians minds, as one of our state’s institutional legends.

Jim Oakley grew up in the newspaper business.

Around 1915, his grandfather bought

two local papers and combined them into the Centreville Press. His father, Jim Oakley, Sr., eventually took over the paper having been groomed for the job. Jim, Jr. always planned to follow his father. He went to the University of Alabama and of course majored in journalism. He met and married his wife, Shirley Ann Naramore of Prattville, at the University and after graduation he came back home to Centreville to run the family newspaper.

Governor Wallace appointed Oakley to the Alabama Commission of Higher Education (ACHE) where he served as chairman for 14 years. It was in this role when Kay Ivey was hired as executive director of ACHE. The person Kay Ivey looked to for help in her first campaign for state Treasurer was Jim Oakley. He has been her go to person for Bibb County for all her campaigns for

taking my younger daughter to register and move into the famous Tutwiler dormitory. There was Jim waiting in the parking lot greeting every student. He gave me a warm handshake and hugged Allyson and made her feel at home. He looked after her like a grandfather for the next four years. Another young lady from Enterprise named Katie Boyd arrived that same day to move into Tutwiler.

Jim took her under his wing the same way; she has just been elected as our next U.S. Senator.

The first person she sought in Bibb County, when she began her race, was Jim Oakley. There are a thousand more stories like those of Katie and Allyson.

Jim loved and cared for each of them like they were his own.

He has three children of his own, Mike, Bill and

Melanie Kay. His oldest son, Mike Oakley, is the Mayor of Centreville as was his grandfather Jim Oakley, Sr. For over 60 years now, all candidates for major statewide offices have come to Bibb County to kiss the ring of Jim Oakley and cultivate his friendship and support. Oakley has been friends and confidantes to every governor, including George Wallace and Kay Ivey. He has been close friends with many of our U.S. Senators, especially Jim Allen and Richard Shelby.

He has mentored and helped almost every state representative and state senator, who have represented Bibb County over the years. His current Bibb County Senator, April Weaver, is one of his favorites.

Jim Oakley has a lot of friends in Alabama.

Georgia he was able to see a live announcer at an on-location broadcast. From that point on, he knew he wanted to do something in radio.

When he started college at Jacksonville State University, in the fall of 1977, he found out there was a student-run radio

station. One year later, he completed the broadcasting classes and started on air in the Summer of 1978.

He quickly became the music director and then the program director. Under his leadership, the station was recognized in several trade magazines.

After college, Malcolm left radio to pursue a “real job”.

Radio was always

deep in his heart.

After retiring from Northeast Alabama Water in 2016, he continued to volunteer and make a difference wherever he could.

“I look forward to being on the air again and being a part of the Southern Torch family.

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — Several were arrested over the last few weeks on drug-related charges. Over 200 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, controlled medications, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm were all confiscated during the arrests.

On Wednesday, July 6th, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 68, finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Justice Marie Laverty (31 of Albertville) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Friday, July 15th, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a search warrant on County Road 498.

While there, Deputies found methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, controlled medication, and marijuana. David James Lee Higgins (32 of Henagar) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance (x3) and Unlawful Possession of Drug

Paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, July 20th, Dekalb county Deputies, along with Narcotics Agents conducted a traffic stop on County Road 159 in Flat Rock. During the stop, Deputies found approximately 5 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Mary Bowman Morgan (53 of Flat Rock) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance (x3) and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Terry Jay White (59 of Flat Rock) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Thursday, July 21st, Officers with Crossville Police Department stopped a vehicle on Hwy 68 finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Robert Earl Sherbundy (48 of Scottsboro) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd.

On Friday, July

29th, Narcotics Agents were patrolling County Road 812 noticing a subject walking along the road.

Agents pulled over to see if he needed assistance. While talking, they noticed a distinct odor. Roy Anthony Baker (47 of Flat Rock) was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Baker was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Saturday, July 30th, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a search warrant at a residence on County Road 32 near Collinsville. During the search, a firearm, over 200 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, controlled medication, and drug paraphernalia were found. Terry Leonard Nix (56 of Collinsville) was charged with Persons Forbidden to Possess Pistol and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance. Trisha Kay Whaley (42 of Collinsville) was charged with Persons Forbidden to Possess Pistol.

This case is ongoing with the possibility of more charges pending.

After 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and tornadoes like were seen in our area in 2011, it was clear that communications between agencies were of utmost importance.

There will be three phases of upgrading existing communications.

The first phase will consist of a Data Management System that will be a new data system to connect all responders together.

DeKalb County Emergency Management Director Anthony Clifton said simply stated “all people will be singing from the same songbook.”

Matt Martin, Chairman of the Advisory Board and a representative from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office stated that the new Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) will log and dispatch the calls. A feature will be a map showing all first responders that are in the area.

“The new system will put everyone on the same playing field with the same information” stated Matt Martin.

Southern Torch phase will be the actual infrastructure for the radio system which will consist of placing antennas on towers.

The third phase will be the actual purchase of each individual radio for the responders and responder agencies.

They are three radios providers to choose from depending on the need of the agency.

“Currently there are over 70 million dollars of grants available with the County only needing around five million dollars to complete the project” state DeKalb County EMA Director Anthony Clifton.

The new Communications project will be a joint effort between the DeKalb County Commission, DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency, DeKalb Ambulance Service, DeKalb County Sherrif’s Office, DeKalb County Association of Fire Department, DeKalb County 911 Board, DeKalb County Police Chief’s Association of the DeKalb County Mayors Association.

In other business, Road Superintendent, Tom Broyles gave an update on County Road 835 (Old Highway 35) project.

Grade work is almost finished and will be ready to turn over for paving in the upcoming week.

Equipment breakage is the main reason that construction has stalled on the road project.

“I’ll be glad to get this done” stated Tom Broyles.

DeKalb County Engineer Ben Luther updated the Commission on two different bid awards.

The first award was the CR 78- Pipe Liner Bid which was awarded to Lambert Inc. in the amount of $128,500 which includes all material and labor.

The second award was the CR 835 Resurfacing Bid which was awarded to Wiregrass in the amount of $315,085.51 which includes traffic stripping and

guardrails. Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reviewed and approved the bid.

Luther also presented the FY2023 Rebuild Alabama CTP which states which roads will be paved with the funds. Luther stated that estimated annual revenue funds are projected at least the same as last year. It is required to adopt the budget by the end of August and can be amended as needed.

The Commission passed the FY2023 Rebuild Alabama budget.

The Commission appointed Emory Ashley and Roger Hurtt to the expired positions on the Dogtown Fire Department Board.

The Commission passed three resolutions through the Americal Rescue Act (ARPA) • Fort Payne Water-Culpepper Road Project- The commission allotted $300,00 toward the project which will improve the quality and volume of water from Highway 35 toward Fisher • Section-Dutton Water- Generator Project- The Commission approved the generator project that will provide the Fyffe/Geraldine area with a generator to pump water in during emergencies • Crossville Water- Highway 68 Waterline ProjectThe Commission approved a $300,000 allotment to aid in this project • NE Water- CR 180 Waterline Extension - The Commission amended a resolution to allot $125,000 more to the project due to costs coming in higher than estimated The next meeting of the DeKalb County Commission will be held on Tuesday, September 13, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Activities Building.

Barn Offers A Picker’s Paradise

By Marla Ballard Reporter Barn Yard Antiques is just what it sounds like, it is a barn where shoppers will find antiques and other time-honored treasures. The barn is located within a mile’s distance of the Dogtown crossroads and the business has been in operation for over 30 years.

Vintage pickers, Cindy and Terry McNew started the business under a big oak tree in her mother’s yard in conjunction with the World’s Longest Yard Sale. “This is the 35th anniversary of the longest yard sale,” said Cindy. “We have been a part of the yard sale every year except for one year when we were traveling.”

Traveling is just one of the methods the McNew’s use to procure treasures.

Cindy and Terry also go to Estate Sales, Goodwill, yard sales, and thrift stores hunting for out-of-theordinary items. Some of the items they sell are handmade items Terry builds.

After a brief time under the oak tree the McNew’s built their

home on the longest yard sale route and they also built a tiny cabin to house their finds. Over time they outgrew the cabin and so the barn became the new home for items from yesteryear.

Although the barn was built only seven years ago, customers often guess its age to be closer to 50 or more years. Terry purposefully used reclaimed lumber and tin to give the barn its aged appearance.

Cindy decorated the barn with some of their picker’s finds and three lush bottle gourd plants give the barn additional downhome charm.

The story about how the couple acquired the land on the longest yard sale route is unique also.

“My parents owned 40 acres here on Lookout Mountain and there were five of us children, so to be fair about dividing up the land daddy came up with a plan,” said Cindy. “He mapped out the property onto a piece of paper and then he cut out the various plots and placed them in a hat and we all took turns drawing one. Our piece is about

eight-acres with a two-acre pond.”

The Barn Yard offers such things as; mule haines, vintage windows, mirrors, and furnishings from Poland, Italy, Hawaii, and Germany. Terry’s talent of making one-of-a-kind tables earn second glances and keep customers coming back. Black walnut mantles, reclaimed lumber, coal scuttle, lamps, and old tin gas cans are common items visitors will find.

Music lovers will enjoy looking through the vinyl record collection of such greats as; The Carpenters, Herman’s Hermits, Dave & Sugar, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Commodores, The Temptations, Sonny & Cher, Ronnie Milsap, Glen Campbell, Dean Martin, and many more.

Patrons never know if they’ll find an old tractor part that Cindy has turned into a candle holder or a vintage candelabra, a school desk from the 70s or a poster from the 60s. “We like to see old things that are given new life,” said Cindy. Shopping is by appointment only. Call 256-997-3030.

NACC Receives a Multi-MillionDollar Appropriation

Submitted Geraldine, Ala —The Geraldine Town Council met August 8 for their regular monthly meeting.

Minutes were approved from two previous meetings.

There was discussion about the 2022-2023 budget. Plans are to have it completed by the September

meeting. The Council agreed to take a 2019 police Tahoe to Auction next month. A Resolution concerning an Opioid settlement was adopted and an Ordinance to declare some items surplus that are no longer needed.

State legislators have granted Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) a multi-milliondollar appropriation for the college’s new workforce development center.

“We can’t say enough good things about Senator Livingston’s support financially of workforce training in our area,” said NACC President Dr. David Campbell.

State Senator Steve Livingston approved the appropriation. Officials for NACC said plans for the workforce development center are still being finalized.

Dr. David Campbell continued, “He knows that this is a way of the future for his constituents in regard to workforce and is caring for their best interests.”

This project’s funding, along with the funding for other workforce centers for the Alabama

Community College System (ACCS), comes from a state bond supported by Senator Livingston and State Representative Nathaniel Ledbetter.

Campbell believes a new day of training through NACC and the 24 colleges in the ACCS is opening up due to Livingston and Ledbetter’s support in legislature.

The workforce center is estimated to cost $25 million, and bids for the project should go out within the next few months.
