RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The DeKalb County Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on July 29.

Dr. Keith Atchley brought one of the ten newly purchased air-conditioned buses for the board to view.

“Like most industries in today’s world, supply chain issues and labor shortages have impacted bus manufacturing. DeKalb County Schools (DCS) had a great opportunity to save significant money by purchasing buses through a cooperative purchasing agreement. We later learned that the buses were equipped with air conditioning” stated DeKalb County Transportation Supervisor Dr. Keith Atchley.

“The Board of Education supported the purchase and we were able to move forward. This comes at a good time since summer

programs have been increasing over the past few years. This past summer we had 27 buses on summer routes compared to two in

2019. This year DCS purchased 10 regular route AC-equipped buses at a price of $962,787.00, and four special needs buses at

a price of $421,000, at an approximate total of $1,383,000.00. I appreciate the support of the Board to help us update our fleet” concluded Dr.Atchley.

The 2022-2023 Calendar was updated which switched a Teacher Work Day and Student E-Learning Day to allow for teachers to have a long weekend during breaks.

The Board also approved a CNP bid to Flowers Baking Company for bread.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — The World’s Longest Yard Sale returns to DeKalb County on Thursday, August 4 and will last until Sunday, August 7.

The event begins each year on the first Thursday in

August and continues for 4 days (Thursday through Sunday). This tradition gives participants the opportunity to travel almost 700 miles from Gadsden, Ala. all the way to Addison, Mich. over the course of those four days and bargain shop until their hearts are content.

The event began in 1987.

Lookout Mountain Parkway was added a few years after

the event started.

The portion that will run through DeKalb County stretches from Gadsden to Chattanooga along the Lookout Mountain Parkway for the most “scenic rural America” in the United States. You can find everything from antiques to

FORT PAYNE, Ala.--(Full Video on Southern Torch Facebook ) During Tuesday’s Fort Payne City Council meeting, Fort Payne City Attorney, Rocky Watson announced that a hearing for the Food City project is scheduled. The hearing is set for August 23 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 301, at the

DeKalb County Courthouse.

According to Watson, the judge has stated that there will be a limited time allowed for public comment for anyone that wishes to speak in favor of the project.

Time was given to those against the Food City project at a previous Council meeting.

Rosalie Church of God Gives Back

Rosalie Church of God has been working hard since June to supply Rosalie School with supplies for the upcoming school year.

“We are a mission-minded church, and the mission begins here at home,” said Pastor Haynes.

The church raised enough money to provide the school with supplies to cover every classroom supply list from pre-K

all the way to 8th grade. Each teacher and student will have the supplies needed to start the school year.

Gift cards were

provided by the church to the school’s janitors and lunchroom workers as well.

On Tuesday, Rosalie Church of God

held an appreciation lunch at their church for the entire Rosalie School staff.

When speaking to the school staff at the lunch, Pastor Haynes said, “We want you to know that you’ve got someone on your side.

Anytime you need us, we’re going to be here for you.” He continued, “We’re going to be praying for you all school year.”

Rosalie School Principal Gene Roberts also spoke at the appreciation lunch about what this meant to him and the rest of the Rosalie School

staff.

“They came and talked to me here a

while back and said they were gonna have all the supplies, but I never dreamed it would be everybody’s supplies they wanted,” said Principal Roberts.

“We appreciate it. We really do. It means a lot.”

Pastor Haynes and the Rosalie Church family love to support the Rosalie community in any way they can.

“There’s a lot that goes undone for Rosalie, and we honor Rosalie,” said Pastor Haynes.

Jess Smith Leaves Scottsboro Scottsboro Haunted House

Due to the departure of head coach Jess Smith, the Scottsboro baseball program is in search of a new head coach.

Smith served as Scottsboro’s head coach for three seasons and is now leaving to take the same job at the back-to-back defending Class 5A state champions Russellville.

Scottsboro went 42-36 in three seasons under Smith, one of which was a shortened season due to COVID-19. Last season he led the team to a 16-13 record and a Class 6A Area 15 championship.

Smith credits his time at Scottsboro for putting him in the mix for the Russellville job that he now has.

When speaking about leaving Scottsboro, Smith said, “This is a great place

with great people to work with. I’m so thankful to everyone.

Grateful to my players for believing in me and being coachable. I think the success of Scottsboro baseball is only beginning. I’m proud to have been a part of it and it’s only going to trend upward.”

The Russellville City School System approved Smith’s hiring on July 26.

Smith served as an assistant coach on Russellville’s staff before his time at Fort Payne. “It’s exciting to go be a part of that

again,” said Smith. “I always had a special place in my heart for Russellville.”

Smith is taking control of a program that has seen five state championships since 2015 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022) under former head coach Chris Heaps. Smith was an assistant on Russellville’s 2017 championship team.

“I was able to learn under Coach Heaps, and it not only made me a better coach, it made me a better man.

I am honored to follow in his footsteps and continue what he started here at Russellville,” Smith said.

He says the Russellville job is his dream job. “I believe Russellville is the best job, no other place has the resources, support, and results they’ve had,” said Smith. “I’m coming back to a place that feels like home, and I’m beyond excited to be part of this program and part of this community again.”

After the previous owner, 51-year-old Greg Gamble, ran into some legal trouble, a haunted house in Scottsboro is set to receive renovations under new ownership.

Court documents show that Gamble was arrested in June and charged with forcible sodomy and three counts of seconddegree sexual abuse.

The new owners Corey Hale, Jeremy Rowell, and Blaine Bradley were all aware of Gamble’s allegations before purchasing the attraction. The attraction under their ownership will now be called Bedlem, which means chaos and confusion.

Hale, Rowell, and Bradley want to change how the community sees the attraction. To give back to the community, they

will donate a portion of their proceeds to CASA of North Sand Mountain.

Rowell, when talking about CASA, said, “They are just wonderful. I mean, they help so many families and so many children in bad spots and stuff.”

The new ownership says they

are optimistic that Bedlem will be open to the public by Halloween.

“We’re definitely excited to do this and be able to take advantage and help other folks too and help the kids as well,” said Rowell.

The house is located on Cecil Street, Scottsboro, Al.

RAINSVILLE, ALA.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The Rainsville City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting on August 1.

At the council meeting, the City of Rainsville agreed to purchase the Flow MPS software for the Rainsville Fire Department in order to better serve the businesses in Rainsville. Structure fires are devastating to anyone. When a fire occurs in a commercial structure, the risk to life, property, and financial well-being is greatly increased due to the fact of fuel load, the physical size of the structure as well as occupancy numbers.

The risk to firefighters also is greatly increased and anything that can be done to reduce or limit risk is essential. That is what Flow MSP will do for the City of Rainsville.

Basically, this allows firefighters to have all the pertinent information to assist and help make crucial

decisions in the event of a fire at a commercial building in Rainsville. MSP is recognized by ISO and will help Rainsville Fire increase the points awarded for having proper pre-plans on commercial buildings inside the city. ISO is the responsible party for grading fire departments’ response capabilities and could help in consumer insurance rates.

Overall, this is a great resource for all stakeholders within the City of Rainsville. The software can be used by the Rainsville Fire Department and the Rainsville Police Department at a annual cost of $950 per year.

The Council suspended the rules for immediate consideration and passed Ordinance 08-01-2022 with a roll call vote that accepted Edgewood Street(Pines Subdivision—Phase II) as a Rainsville City Street.

The Council approved Resolution 08-01-2022 (A) which accepted the surplus bid for the 2018 Mahindra Tractor, from J & J Merchants, in the amount of $33,777.77 The Council approved Resolution

08-01-2022 (B) which authorized Rainsville’s participation in the Alabama Opioid Settlement.

In other business, the Council: Empowered Mayor Lingerfelt to Sign a Contract with Shenandoah to perform at the Freedom Fest 2023 and send $7500.00 Deposit (Total $15,000.00) Bid out Paving for Boozer Road with bids being opened on August 31 at 10 a.m.

Winter Market Shopping Event In November

By Marla Ballard Reporter SCOTTSBORO, AL. -- Heather Andrews lives in a white farmhouse on Highway 40 in Henagar. Literally overnight she says she was inspired to create a venue for vendors and artisans to showcase their wares and talents and named it after her home.

Farmhouse 40 is a home décor, gift, food, and more seasonal event held at the VFW Fairgrounds in Scottsboro. The wintertime event that Andrews constructed will have its third annual showing on Friday and Saturday, November 11TH and 12th.

“The idea came to me after I was laid-off from my teaching position (due to the pandemic), we were building our home, and I was pregnant,” said Andrews. “I got on Facebook and just put

a few feelers out there to see if there was any interest in my idea and was surprised to see the large response.”

Farmhouse 40 is held indoors, utilizing both buildings at the fairgrounds. Outdoors visitors will find food trucks and live music.

Customers will discover custom made items by artisans such as ornaments with hand-painted monograms, while they watch. Ladies and children’s boutique clothing, hand-poured candles, jewelry, antiques, handmade arts and crafts, paintings, and representatives from popular corporations such as Mary Kay and Tupperware are all in attendance.

The November event is known as the Winter Market versus the one held in the springtime. Andrews said the vendors she rents spaces to offer unique items. “It’s a

one-stop shopping experience,” said Andrews. “It is a day out with friends, making gift purchases, drinking hot chocolate, eating caramel apples or peanut brittle, and just chilling.” Previously the shopping affair took place at another location, but drew a crowd so large that the venue had to be relocated to the fairgrounds.

On Friday the doors open at 4:00 p.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. Friday is the V.I.P. night with an admission fee of $10.

Guests receive a generous, variety bag of goodies and pictures with Santa are free. Saturday is free admission, hours are 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Pictures with Santa Claus on Saturday are $10.

Andrews said the spring event is dedicated to redecorating the home and wardrobe and changing the scents in the home with candles while still offering a wide array of merchandise.

By Steve Flowers The 1962 Governor’s Race was between George Wallace, James “Big Jim” Folsom, and newcomer Ryan DeGraffenreid, a state senator from Tuscaloosa.

Television had become the new medium. Therefore, Wallace, Folsom, and DeGraffenreid had all bought 30-minute, live television shows the night before the election.

George Wallace came on first at 7:00 p.m. He did pretty well, not great, but he did not hurt himself.

Ryan DeGraffenreid came on at 7:30 p.m. He was magnificent.

He helped himself immensely. He was telegenic and took to television like a duck to water. He was a hit and picked up some votes.

Big Jim came

on last at 8:00 p.m.

That was probably too late for Big Jim. They had him sitting on a sofa that was too small for him.

His knees jutted up almost to his chest.

Television advisors will tell you to look squarely into the camera. Obviously, the last thing Big Jim had been told before he went on the air was to look right into the camera.

He hunkered down like he was staring a hole in the viewer the way he stared at the camera.

Unfortunately, the advisor had forgotten to tell Big Jim to comb his hair.

He had a wayward strand of hair hanging right down in his face.

His first words portended what was to come. His speech was slurred, and he was clearly drunk.

After his opening statement of about four minutes, even

though I was only 11, I could tell Big Jim seemed impaired. I walked back to my mama’s bedroom door where she was reading and I said, “Mama, you need to come in the living room and see Big Jim on TV. I believe he is drunk.” She walked in, glanced at him and assured me that was just Big Jim’s personality.

She said he was putting on a show for the television audience. I think she was taking up for him because she was for him. So, I settled back in for the remainder of the show.

Big Jim had several children, so they were going to have him introduce his children one-byone. Little Jim came out first and he did pretty well with him, “This is my little boy, Jim.” Although he did tousle his hair pretty badly. The second

son, Jack, came out and Big Jim said, “This is my boy...” He stammered around trying to think of his name. Finally, he blurted out, “Boy what is your name?”

The television folks dropped the idea of trying to introduce the rest of Big Jim’s family after that.

They let him start talking again. He was weaving back and forth. The long strand of hair was hanging right over his nose. He was now pontificating on the virtues of progressivism, free textbooks and Farmto-Market roads. I called mama in again to view the spectacle. She stood there for a full two minutes with her mouth open and finally said, “Son, I believe you’re right.

Big Jim is drunk.”

He finished by getting mad at George Wallace and calling him a cuckoo

bird for trying to steal his platform.

He waved his arms wildly for three solid minutes on statewide television mimicking a cuckoo bird.

Folks around the state had heard tales and rumors about Big Jim’s drinking for years.

They had dismissed it as political talk.

However, seeing Big Jim live and drunk on statewide television was an eyeopener. He never recovered. He failed to make the runoff the next day.

Wallace led the ticket and DeGraffenreid edged Big Jim out of the runoff. Wallace beat DeGraffenreid in the runoff.

Later, Big Jim said Wallace’s people drugged him. This story is not likely.

Big Jim had pretty much succumbed to alcohol by this

B time in his life. The R night Big Jim came on television drunk was the end of his political career but it was a heck of a show.

Some old time political observers contend Big Jim would have won that 1962 race had he not come on television drunk the night before the election. I disagree.

Family Business Offers Decades Of Experience

By Marla Ballard Reporter FORT PAYNE, ALA. -- David Bruno and Richard Dunn are the owners of the privately owned company Ancro Garage Doors. Bruno operates the Fort Payne location and Dunn oversees the Rainbow City store.

The company opened in 1981 and offers both commercial and residential garage doors. The name of the company is derived from the previous owners, Anderson and Crow.

Bruno and Dunn purchased the business from the family 11 years ago.

The company caters to other areas outside of the locations of their stores including Scottsboro, Birmingham, Huntsville, and Chattanooga.

Shopping for garage doors is made simpler with mocked-up computergenerated imagery.

Bruno said his company can let the

customer see the various doors they want on their home.

“We take a picture of the customer’s home and then let them see how the different types of doors would look on their house via the computer,” said Bruno.

Bruno also said that most customers prefer to shop online, but Ancro does offer hardcopy brochures for customers who prefer that method of shopping.

Bruno said what he wants to be known for the most is “customer satisfaction.” “If the customer wants us to dispose of the old door, we are happy to,” said Bruno. Ancro offers the customer the option of letting them do the woodwork and framing of the garage door, not just the installation. “We train our installers to clean up after themselves and make it look as if we were never there,”

said Bruno.

While some companies end the relationship with the customer after installation, Ancro says they will handle any warranty issues instead of telling the customer to talk to the manufacturer. “We try to make the entire process as hassle-free as possible for the customer,” said Bruno.

“They just need to decide which door they prefer and leave the rest to us.” The company also does repair work on damaged doors when the parts are still available. Many garage doors come with a lifetime warranty.

NACC Receives Appropriation for Workforce Development

RAINSVILLE – Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) recently received a one-milliondollar appropriation from state legislatures for the construction of NACC’s new Workforce Development Center.

The appropriation was secured by Senator Steve Livingston. Plans for the Workforce Development Center are still being finalized.

Funding for this and other workforce centers throughout the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) come from a state bond issue of which Senator Livingston and Alabama Representative

Nathaniel Ledbetter (District 24), were key supporters. Dr. David Campbell, President of NACC, stated: “We can’t say enough good things about Senator Livingston’s support financially of workforce training in our area. He knows that this is the way of the future for his constituents in regard to workforce and is caring for their best interests.”

Campbell also added that Senator Livingston and Representative Ledbetter’s support in the legislature is opening up a new day of training through NACC and the 24 college Alabama Community College System.

NACC’s proposed workforce center is estimated to cost 25 million. Though not formalized yet, bids for the building should go out within the next few months.

He has spent many late nights at the hanger helping to build the Dekalb County
