FP Denies 6th Dollar General

FORT PAYNE, Ala.-- On Tuesday, July 12, the Fort Payne Planning Commission held its regular meeting.

On the agenda was a request by The Broadway Group to rezone 12.88 acres, owned by Marlin and Ann Blalock, just east of Big Wills Drive and 49th Street NW from R-1 (Low-Density Residential District) to C-3 (Highway Business District) for the commercial development of a Super Dollar General Store.

Over sixty residents of the area, attended the meeting to voice their concerns about a commercial development being put in a premier neighborhood, according to Fort Payne Council President, Walter Watson.

Farm Offers Variety of Animals

When they started the farm/ranch they teamed up with those in the know-how to learn the ropes of breeding. “I learned mixing horses known for the speed with lines known for working ranches produced a horse that could go anywhere and do anything,” said Wanda. “I give a lot of credit to Scottie Hairston who taught me a great deal about breeding horses.”

Bloodlines for Rockin S Farms include; Hancock, Blue Valentine, Peppy San Badger, Doc Bar, and several others.

Wanda likes horses with color and especially the Blue Roan. A true Blue Roan has a coat of 50/50 mix of white and black hairs, which gives the equine a blue-hued appearance. Blue Roans are more rare

than other Roan horses. The more common Roans are bay, chestnut, dun, and black, these Roans are also characterized by an even mixture of white and colored hairs while the head and points are mostly solid-colored.

According to Griffith Rockin S Farms horses are registered with AQHA. Rockin S Farms sells a variety of colored horses.

The Great Danes that Wanda sells are mainly from European lines. “I like the European Danes better because of the way they look,” said Wanda.

“They have a heavier jowl set and a thicker build.” All Great Danes are known for their grandeur, but European Danes are known for a more reserved temperament than American.

European Danes are also known for longer necks, a wider torso, andmore wrinkles than the American Dane. It is believed that the Great Danes can comprehend up to 250 words and gestures and are quick to learn commands.

Griffith said her Great Danes are AKC registered, as well as her French Bulldogs.

She said her Mini Australian Shepherds are ASDR. Wanda said she named the farm Rockin S for her twin girls Sydnee Grace and Sarah Kate and her maiden name Simmons.

Jackson County Board Elects Interim Superintendent

On Wednesday, July 6, Cheryl Miller was honored with a retirement ceremony at the Scottsboro Police Department.

Miller, who serves as the office manager, has served the city for 28 years.

In 1994, Miller began her career with the police department as a part-time dispatcher. Later that year, she was hired as a full-time dispatcher.

Miller was promoted to dispatch supervisor in

December 1997 and was influential in the

implementation of a new CAD (Caller Aided Dispatch) system that was installed in the early 2000’s.

She took over duties of office manager for the police department in April 2019.

Police Chief Ron Latimer said, “Cheryl has been a valuable employee of the Scottsboro Police Department.” He continued, “More importantly, she has been a good friend.

We wish her well in her future endeavors, and all the best in retirement.”

Scottsboro so her parents could begin work at Revere Copper and Brass.

For over 20 years, Fredrick has worked at the Probate Office.

During that time, she said she has developed a working relationship with not just local and county officials, but state

officials as well.

Frederick has been heavily involved in the community and believes by serving on the council she can offer even more to the city of Scottsboro.

“My experience working with the public and, most importantly, helping people will be an asset if elected to the city council,” said Fredrick.

Fredrick stated, “I love my hometown and want to be a part of helping Scottsboro and Jackson County continue to work together.” She continued, “I humbly ask for your vote and support on August 23.”

Wednesday morning, July 6, Dr. Angela Guess was chosen as the new interim superintendent of Jackson County Schools by the school district’s board.

Dr. Guess previously served at the board’s vice president.

Speaking on Duke’s passing, Dr. Guess stated, “We have recently had the tragedy of losing a superintendent who was much beloved and who was very visionary.” She continued, “He had plans for this district and for our students in ways of providing them for more opportunities.

My goal is to see his vision carry on and to have those opportunities in the new innovation center we’re working on for our kids.”

Dr. Guess said there is no time table on her holding the interim position, but while serving the role, she intends to help progress the school district in every way she can.

The guest speaker for this year’s event is Greg Byrne, Director of Athletics for the University of Alabama.

Named Alabama’s 17th Director of Athletics on January 17, 2017, he made an immediate impact on the Crimson Tide, developing and implementing both The Standard, a strategic plan outlining the mission statement and core values of Alabama Athletics, and The Crimson Standard, a 10-year, $600 million capital initiative focused on the

renovation of facilities and development of infrastructure.

Tom Broyles, Superintendent of the DeKalb County Road Department, updated the Commission on the status of CR 835, better known as the Old Highway 35.

Due to several different reasons, the project was not finished as planned by the end of June.

Broyles stated that was why he did not like to put out a timeframe for projects.

Broyles stated that when CR 835 work was completed, workers would move on to reclaim several roasts n District 1, and work on the clearing of the chert pit that needs to be completed in dry weather.

Broyles gave an update on the herbicide treatment on the county roads.

Good results are being reported. The second application will be in late summer or late fall.

A winter application is being looked into, as well.

Harris asked about the cost of treating dirt roads in his district but Superintendent Broyles stated that the cost would not be economical for the County, due to the particular treatment that is required on dirt roads. There are approximately 350 miles of roads that are dirt or without some type of paving in the County.

Wes Allen defeated veteran politico, Jim Ziegler, in the Secretary of State race. Andrew Sorrell bested Stan Cooke and Rusty Glover to become State Auditor. Both Sorrell and Allen were about to become freshmen members of the Alabama House this time four years ago. Now, they are the new stars on the statewide political block.

They will be joining Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth as young constitutional officeholders with a future.

Rockstar Katie Britt is 40, superstar Will Ainsworth is 41, star Wes Allen is 46 and star Andrew Sorrell is 36.

seven year old Sean Ross ran the Katie Britt campaign masterfully. He is absolutely brilliant.

He ran one of Twinkle Cavanaugh’s campaigns four years ago, when he was just graduating from the University of Alabama. Katie did a goods day’s work when she acquired his services with a recommendation from Twinkle. He is the hottest item in Alabama political consulting.

There were four vacancies in the Alabama State Senate. State Representative Merika Coleman, a Bessemer attorney, won a very impressive victory for the seat of retiring Priscilla Dunn. She is young and brilliant and is going to be a star in the Alabama State Senate.

Lance Bell won the seat of retiring state Senator Jim McClendon. Bell beat his opponent 73% to 27% in this Republican seat.

In my observations of Alabama politics, every election year brings an underlying election year surprise or two. The underlying prevailing theme emerging from the Alabama political arena this year is that women have arrived politically in the Heart of Dixie.

Governor Kay Ivey is only the second female elected Governor of Alabama, Lurleen Wallace being the first in 1966.

Governor Ivey won a decisive secondterm nomination as the Republican nominee in May. She will face another female Democratic nominee, Yolanda Flowers, in the November General Election. This is the first time two women will face each other for governor.

In fact, the first and second place finishers in both the Republican and Democratic primaries

over Wendy Ghee Draper in the Anniston based Republican seat of retiring veteran state Senator Del Marsh.

In probably the biggest upset surprise of the 2022 primary season was the victory of Josh Carnley to fill the Republican Southeast Alabama Senate Seat held for decades by the powerful and popular Jimmy Holley. This district is comprised of Coffee, Covington, Pike and part of Dale counties. Twelveyear veteran, State House member, Mike Jones of Andalusia was expected to waltz to victory having every business groups endorsement.

Carnley carried his home county of Coffee, overwhelmingly, and veteran political consultant David Mowery did a masterful job with Carnley’s ads.

Popular first term state senator, Dan Roberts, was challenged by a selffinanced urologist in

Roberts’ silk stocking Jefferson/Shelby district but Roberts won handily.

For the first time in 40 years, there will not be a Sanders representing the Black Belt in the Alabama Senate.

Veteran Senator Hank Sanders failed in his bid to take back his seat he loaned to his daughter, the aforementioned Malika Sanders Fortier. Hank Sanders had served nine terms as the Black Belt’s senator.

He was defeated by Robert Stewart of Selma.

Jay Hovey won the coveted Lee/ Tallapoosa/Russell County State Senate seat, prevailing over incumbent Tom Whatley by one vote.

For the most part, the powerful 35-member State Senate will return intact with only few new faces.

Marijuana Grow Operation Discovered on County Road 51

From the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden: FORT PAYNE, Ala. — During the last three weeks of June and the first week of July, 16 were arrested on drug-related charges. We would like to thank the DeKalb County Narcotics Agents, Deputies and Investigators, Ider Police Department, State Probation and Parole, DHR, Crossville Police Department, Henagar Police Department, and Collinsville Police Department for always just being a phone call away.

On Thursday, June 16th, the DeKalb County Narcotics Agents, along with DeKalb County Deputies and DeKalb County Criminal Investigations Unit executed a search warrant at a residence on County Road 138 in Henagar that involved stolen property. Upon arrival, law enforcement made contact with Daniel Scott Bearden (38 of Albertville) who was in possession of over 20 grams of methamphetamine.

Shannon Denise Coley (45 of Henagar) was also found to be in possession of about 1lb of marijuana, methamphetamine, and a firearm which she had no permit.

Bearden was charged with Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substances, Unlawful Possession of Drug

Paraphernalia, and 3 warrants for Failure to Appear. Coley was charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 1st, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, and Pistol Concealed without Permit. This case is ongoing with more charges pending.

Also, on Thursday, the DeKalb County Narcotics Agents conducted a search warrant at a residence on County Road 4, finding methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Michael Shane Mims (53 of Boaz) was charged with Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substance (x4), Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, June 21st, Ider Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on Al Hwy 75. During the stop, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle.

Dillon Jarmin Morgan (32 of Ider) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance.

Narcotics Agents were called to assist.

Again, on Tuesday, Probation Officers went to a residence on County Road 141 in Ider to follow up with a Parolee. While there they found methamphetamine,

marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the residence. Marvin Pearson Chadwick III (25 of Ider) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance.

Narcotics Agents were called to assist.

On Wednesday, June 22nd, the DeKalb County Narcotics Agents conducted a search warrant at a residence on County Road 51 in Fort Payne. During the search, methamphetamine and a marijuana growing operation were found. DHR was called to the scene, due to a small child being in the home. Derick Charles Robbins (31 of Fort Payne) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 1st, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (x3), Unlawful Manufacturing of Controlled Substance 1st, Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substance (x2) and Chemical Endangerment of Exposing a Child.

Michael Ryan Hulgan (31 of Fort Payne) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Manufacturing of Controlled

Substance and 3 warrants for Failure to Appear.

On Thursday, June 23rd, the DeKalb County Narcotics Agents conducted a traffic stop on Al Hwy 35 and County Road 90 in Fort Payne.

During the stop, the driver was found to be in possession of approximately 15 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Larry Christopher Dudley (46 of Stevenson) was charged with Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance.

On Thursday, June 30th, Narcotics Agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop on County Road 134, with the driver failing to stop. After a short pursuit, the driver ran off the roadway in Jackson County.

Jonthan Michael Moore (42 of Dutton) was charged with Attempt to Elude Police, Reckless Endangerment, Resisting Arrest, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Speeding 100 in a 45.

On Saturday, July 2nd, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on County Road 478 in Kilpatrick finding approximately 21 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Brandy Lashae Turner (35 of Albertville) was charged with

Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Joseph Michael Boone (32 of Boaz) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Christy Michele Monday (41 of Albertville) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd.

Crossville Police Officers and Narcotics Agents were called to assist.

On Sunday, July 3rd, Dorota Koska (31 of Henagar) was brought to the DeKalb County Detention Center by Henagar Police Officers for Domestic Violence 3rd. After she arrived, she was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, prescription medication, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Koska was charged with Domestic Violence 3rd, Illegal Possession of Prescription Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd and Promote Prison Contraband 2nd.

Narcotic Agents were called in to assist.

On Monday, July 4th, Narcotics Agents conducted a traffic stop on Hwy

75 in Fyffe, finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Bradley Shane White (48 of Rainsville) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 1st, DUI (controlled substance), and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, July 5th, Narcotics Agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the Mt. Vernon area with the vehicle failed to stop. After a short vehicle pursuit, the driver stopped and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Justin Tyler Norris (34 of Cedar Bluff) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and an Attempt to Elude Police.

Again, on Tuesday, Collinsville Police Officers conducted a traffic stop finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Anabel McKenzie Craig (21 of Fort Payne) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substances, Illegal Possession of Credit/ Debit Card, and Theft of Property 3rd.

RAINSVILLE – Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) is extremely excited to announce this year’s Music on the Mountain celebration will feature the acclaimed country music group Shenandoah. The event will be held Thursday, July 28, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tom Bevill Lyceum on NACC’s campus.

Inspirational Woman Walks Down Memory Lane

By Marla Ballard Reporter COLLINSVILLE, ALA. --- Brenda Bartley fondly recalls what life was like in DeKalb County back in the 1950s and 60s. She lives in the Shady Grove Community on Lookout Mountain, where she first lived as a child. Her family roots go back seven generations in the mountain top community. Although she has lived in several different states throughout her life, she says this will always be home to her.

At age 79, Bartley remembers boarding the train in Collinsville to travel to Fort Payne to visit the dentist or family. As she drives through the streets of Collinsville, she reminiscences her family using mules and a wagon to come down Hall Gap, which was a dirt road back then. “I can remember when there was no Interstate 59 and when we went to church the only car there were the preachers,” said Bartley.

She said the sidewalks of Collinsville were once very crowded with people and the town had three banks and a Hall’s Department

Store. “Hall’s had everything from men’s suits to coffins for sale,” said Bartley.

“Back in those days, there were no cashier stations located throughout the store like now. A clerk would pull a string and a little box would come down from the upper floor and they would put your money in it and send it back upstairs, then the little box would come back down holding your change.”

Bartley said the Collinsville Water Department is located at the site where Hall’s store used to be and the police station is near where the two-story school was.

“I can remember when Trade Day was at a different place in town,” said Bartley.

The school she attended in Collinsville took her on a field trip to the movie theatre where 10 cents bought a seat. “I was glad to see the historical society restore the old theatre in Collinsville,” said Bartley. Another field trip consisted of the children being taken to her teacher’s home to see Eisenhower inaugurated on television.

Fort Payne Police Chief David Davis recently spoke to the Lions Club. He updated the club on the many projects the Fort Payne Police Department is doing for the community.

retiring, Bartley became a Real Estate Broker and opened her own office in Centre, where six agents work under her as a Broker. “I call real estate my third career,” said Bartley. “Before real estate, I worked at two manufacturing companies. I started both at entry-level and reached department head at one and became a trainer at the other.”

Bartley was in her thirties before she was able to finish her high school education, acquiring a G.E.D. certificate. Over the years she has taken University courses and still plans on continuing her education, she is currently at junior level status in college. She says she has a fourth career planned; she wants to be a writer.

She has faced the death of loved ones and her own health issues but says she’s happy for the road she’s traveled through life. She’s a mother of a police officer and wants parents to know that principals are “caught more than taught.” She hopes her “stick-with-it attitude” for employment and education will inspire someone.

Former Scottsboro pitcher, Christian Herberholz, will continue his baseball career at Auburn University for the 2023 season.

Herberholz suffered an injury during the opening game or the 2021 season and decided to look for a fresh start to his baseball career.

After a shortened 2020 season due to COVID and a shortened 2021 season due to injury, Herberholz left Tennessee Tech to go pitch for Southern

Union Community College in Wadley.

After an impressive 2022 season with Southern Union, leading the Alabama Community College Conference in ERA (2.40), Herberholz will play for Auburn University.

Herberholz posted

a 4-0 record in seven starts and three relief appearances. He recorded 55 strikeouts, while only allowing 11 walks, 41 hits, and 15 earned runs.

Speaking on joining the SEC, Herberholz said, “It’s the best baseball conference in the country, so that’s really exciting.”

Auburn, who is coming off a College World Series appearance, watched Herberholz pitch multiple times for Southern Union this past season.

Herberholz said when Auburn offered, he knew it was the place he should go.
