Rainsville to Surplus City Vehicles

RAINSVILLE, Ala.--The Rainsville City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 6. The Council passed Resolution 12-06-2021 which will allow the surplus of nine city vehicles. Bids
will be opened on January 4, 2022, at 12 p.m. and will be announced at the first meeting of the year on January 6. The Council approved the rescheduled date for the meeting due to the New Year holiday being observed on Monday. The Council approved, with a 4-2 vote, the addition of Peaceful Acres as a Rainsville City street with
Councilman Brandon Freeman and Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt voting against. “I voted against the acceptance of the street until all specifications are met according to the ordinance” stated Councilman Brandon Freeman. “ I have no problem with the street but just wanted to wait until all necessary items were
completed.” Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt updated the Council on the bidding out process for culverts for the Chavies Bridge project. Bids will be accepted until January 5, 2022. The bids will be opened and presented to the Council at the meeting on January 6. In other business, the Council approved the

FP Pushes for Road Improvements

FORT PAYNE, Ala.--The Fort Payne City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting on December 7. Mayor Brian Baine informed the Council that he met with the Alabama Department of
Transportation (ALDOT) regarding the road issue at the intersection of Alabama Highway 11 and Airport Road. Mayor Baine stated that ALDOT will send someone to examine the issue. He also discussed the need for a Gault Avenue Rehab and an alternative route for an overpass. “They will know who I
am before this term is over... We want to see something done” stated Mayor Baine. The Council passed an amended version of Ordinance 2021-17, to expand the “Historic District” only from Gault Avenue on First Street East to the Norfolk Southern Railway. The area for expansion was approved by
the Alcohol Planning Committee. Councilmember John Smith voted against the proposed expansion until more details could be discussed. This expansion will allow a local business to sell alcohol despite its proximity to a church that was not operating when the alcohol ordinance was created. The Council

“A Christmas Carol – A Radio Play”

The Whole Backstage Theatre and Season Sponsor Sonny Lewis announce the upcoming holiday production, “A Christmas Carol – A Radio Play”, directed by Johnny Brewer, with technical director Denton Gillen. Performances will be December 16, 17, 18, at 7:00 p.m., with a Sunday matinee December 19 at 2:00 p.m.; and a special streaming format on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “We are setting the stage as a 1940s radio broadcasting studio so that the audience can experience how a live radio show really worked during that time period. Along with the beloved Dickens characters, Foley artists will be working onstage, creating sound effects that will define and enhance certain scenes. “Foley’’ is the art of crafting sound effects for radio, film, and television, named for Jack Donovan Foley, the ultimate pioneer of generating sound effects for live radio broadcasts in the early days of the industry. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at more than 2,500 veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and overseas. Patriots Memorial Park and Glenwood Cemetery, an official 2021 Wreaths Across America (WAA) location, will host a wreath-laying ceremony, joining more than 2,500 other locations across the country
for National Wreaths Across America Day. Coordinated and led by Hannah White Arnett Chapter NSDAR and DeKalb County VFW Post 3128, several donations have been received to sponsor the placement of over 560 veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of our fallen service members laid to rest there. This event seeks to further the WAA mission of Remember, Honor, Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures. On Saturday, December 18, 2021, beginning at 10:00 am at Patriots Memorial Park, eight ceremonial wreaths will be laid at the flags representing the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard, Fire Department, Police Department, and US Servicemen listed as
Prisoners of War or Missing in Action. After the ceremony, volunteers will proceed to Glenwood Cemetery to lay live, balsam wreaths on the individual headstones of veterans laid to rest there. Veterans, active service members, and their families are invited to attend as well as leaders and members of our community. Special thanks are extended to the Fort Payne City Council, Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce, Alabama Fan Club, Ben Mar Hosiery, Chick-fil-A, Rather Be Home, and Fort Payne Footworks and Cracker Barrel for their generous donations for this event.

Lloyd Warden Wofford Jr. - 60, of Decatur passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was originally from the Druid Hills area of Atlanta, Georgia. Lloyd was a caring man with a gentle heart. He was loved by the many friends he made over the years. He attended The University of Alabama and was a member of the Crimson Tide football team from 1980 - 1984. He is survived by daughter, Ashley Wofford, brother, Curtis Wofford(Tina), nephew, Austin Wofford and niece, Elizabeth Iverson (Deacon). He is also survived by his mother, Ramona Wofford and preceded in death by his father, Lloyd W. Wofford, Sr. To honor Lloyd’s life, show kindness to others as he always strived to do in life. By Steve Flowers Folks, believe it or not, we are closing in on six months before next year’s election year. The primary election is set for May 24, 2022. In Alabama, all our major constitutional officers are on the ballot next year. The governor’s office is the premier race in the state, and that coveted and powerful post is set for its four-year quadrennial run. Therefore, this big political year is referred to as the gubernatorial year. Those of us who follow Alabama politics have been salivating with anticipation for a cavalcade of great races. However, the power of incumbency has devastated the big year into a yawn. All the major state offices are held by popular incumbents, who are either running unopposed or have minimal opposition.

Inside The Statehouse
The consolation prize was that there would be the legislative races. After all, this is where the real power in the state rests. You can simply look at where the special interest and PAC money is spent to verify that fact. However, the omnipotent power of incumbency has also encroached on those races. The Alabama House of Representatives has 105 members. There are 77 Republicans and 28 Democrats. The large majority of incumbents are running for reelection – both Republicans and Democrats. The overwhelming majority of these incumbents will have no opposition. However, in the House, there will be some major changes in leadership because of retirement or moving on to new posts. Speaker of the House
Mac McCutcheon is not running for reelection. This has created an interesting and spirited race within the Republican Caucus ranks for Speaker. In addition, Victor Gaston of Mobile, who is Speaker Pro Tem, is also retiring. Bill Poole of Tuscaloosa, who chaired the powerful House Ways and Means Education Budget Committee, has left the House to be the State Finance Director. House Rules Committee Chairman Mike Jones of Andalusia is running for the open senate seat of retiring Senator Jimmy Holley. Two of the freshman House members are running for statewide office. Wes Allen of Troy is running for Secretary of State and Andrew Sorrell of Tuscumbia is running for State Auditor. In addition, Connie Rowe of
Jasper is leaving the House to become an administrative assistant to Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth. Some of the veteran House members who are choosing to hang up their legislative cleats include Howard Sanderford of Huntsville, Mike Ball of Huntsville, K.L. Brown of Jacksonville, Kerry Rich of Marshall, Allen Farley of Jefferson, Harry Shiver of Baldwin, Mike Holmes of Elmore, and Becky Nordgren of Etowah. The most noteworthy retiree may be Representative Steve McMillan of Baldwin County, who is retiring after serving close to 43 years in the House. Steve has been a quiet yet very effective voice for the people of Baldwin County. They all will be missed. Some of the high profile and powerful members of the House, who will return for another
four years with no or token opposition, are Steve Clouse of Ozark, Nathaniel Ledbetter of Dekalb County, and Danny Garrett, Jim Carns, David Wheeler, and David Faulkner of Jefferson. Danny Garrett has ascended to Chairman of the House Ways and Means Education. Other leaders returning are Chris Pringle, Reed Ingram, Randall Shedd, Tracy Estes, Chris Sells, David Standridge, Ginny Shaver, Jim Hill, Alan Baker, Joe Lovvorn, Chris Blackshear, Kyle South, Paul Lee, Jeff Sorrells, Rhett Marques, Steve Hurst, Joe Faust, and Margie Wilcox. The Democratic leadership will remain intact. There is an illustrious array of House Democratic leaders, including Anthony Daniels, Chris England, Laura Hall, Peb Warren, Barbara Boyd, A.J. McCampbell, Berry
Forte, Dexter Grimsley, Thomas Jackson, Kevin Lawrence, Mary Moore, Juandalynn Givan, and veteran John Rogers. Two of the Democratic House veterans from Jefferson County Louise Alexander and Merika Coleman are both running for an open Jefferson County Senate Seat, leaving both their House seats up for grabs. There may be an increase in the number of females in the House of Representatives. It has already begun with the election of Cynthia Almond of Tuscaloosa, who was elected without opposition to replace Bill Poole. In addition, Patrice Penni McClammy won the Montgomery District 76 seat of her late father Thad McClammy. She won with no opposition. See you next week.

Ten arrested on drug-related charges
FORT PAYNE, Ala. — During the month of November, ten were arrested on drug-related charges. On Thursday, November 4th, Officers with the Crossville Police Department found Timothy James Peacock (47 of Crossville) to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, after an encounter at a convenience store on Hwy 68 and Hwy 227 in Crossville. Peacock was charged with Criminal Littering and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. DeKalb County Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. On Sunday, November 7th, DeKalb County Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Hwy 75. The vehicle fled
from Deputies, but they later found the driver at a residence on County Road 801 in Flat Rock. Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia were found. Jenna Suzzan Tait (41 of Flat Rock) was charged with an Attempt to Elude Police, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance. DeKalb County Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. On Thursday, November 11th, DeKalb County Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Dogtown Road in Fort Payne, with the driver fleeing and turning onto Jennings Road. After a short pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle and was taken to DeKalb Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Once released from
the hospital, Anthony Wayne Thomas (39 of Fort Payne) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Attempt to Elude Police, and Contempt of Court. DeKalb County Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. On Monday, November 15th, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Jordan Road in Fort Payne, finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. David Anthony Bone (47 of Sand Rock) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd. DeKalb County
Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. On Tuesday, November 16th, DeKalb County Narcotics Agents noticed a subject in a vehicle that had active warrants. When Agents attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped up attempting to flee. After a short pursuit, the vehicle pulled over near Jackson County on County Road 47. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle. Buddy Wayne Johnson (45 of Fort Payne) was charged with an Attempt to Elude Police, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substances. Alicia Megan Payne (25 of Rainsville) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substances and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. On Wednesday, November 17th, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Hwy 75 and County
Road 141 near Cartersville. During the stop, marijuana and kratom were found. Michael Chad Creel (37 of Chickamauga, Ga) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd. On Saturday, November 20th, DeKalb County Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on County Road 380, with the driver speeding up trying to flee. After a short pursuit, the driver lost control near Hwy 68. Sterling Ray Morgan (27 of Boaz) was found to be in possession of a half-ounce of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Morgan was charged with Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Attempt to Elude Police, Possession with Intent, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, and FTA (x7). DeKalb County Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. On Tuesday, November 23rd, Officers with the
Crossville Police Department conducted a traffic stop at Hwy 68 and Hwy 227 in Crossville finding the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Larry Shane Freeman (54 of Boaz) was charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substances and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. DeKalb County Narcotics Unit was called in to assist. Again, on Tuesday, DeKalb County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on County Road 4 and County Road 15 near Aroney, finding the driver to be in possession of B methamphetamine S and drug m paraphernalia. The Council agreed upon accepting applications to the Board for both positions until December 16 at 4 pm. The Council will conduct interviews on the 20th, bringing their recommendations for a vote at the next council meeting on December 22.

Operation Rescue Christmas

COLLINSVILLE, Ala.-- Throughout 2021, the Collinsville Rescue Squad did intense fundraising for their “Operation Rescue Christmas” project. The Collinsville Rescue Squad raised over $3,000 to sponsor twenty-five children that might not have had a Christmas, if not for their help. The
squad reached out to the local school and community, gathering names of children who were in need. Members of the rescue squad went shopping and purchased several gifts for each child as well as stocking stuffers. On Monday, December 6, the Collinsville Rescue Squad hosted a party for the children and their families. There was food, a
visit from Santa, and even the Grinch. Each child left with a sackful of presents. The members of the rescue squad left with smiles on their faces after seeing the joy in the children’s eyes. The Collinsville Rescue Squad wants the community to know that they are there for them all the time, not just during an emergency. They also want to thank each person and
business that donated to their fundraiser. The Collinsville Rescue Squad looks forward to helping more families next year. Their goal for 2022 is to help fifty children.
