Squash legend at Dromana AUSTRALIAN squash legend Geoff Hunt brought his skills and coaching abilities to the Tonic squash courts and gym, Dromana, last week.

Now 68 and retired and with an MBE for his services to the sport – Hunt is widely regarded as one of the greatest squash players in history, having been ranked world number one 1975-1980. He won the World Open title four times.

Accompanying him to Dromana was Qatar champion Abdulla Al Tamimi, who took part in coaching sessions at the club in Collins Rd. Hunt was a senior Australian Institute of Sport coach for several years before moving to Qatar to coach for the past eight years.

Mike Hast mike@mpnews.com.au THE sorry saga of the destruction of Portsea’s front beach continues with further damage being done during last week’s windy weather and rough seas.

The extent of the erosion is increasing with ocean-like waves now also pounding either side of the sandbag wall, or revetment, installed by the state government in late 2010 at a cost of more than $1 million after the beach and foredune started being swept away in 2009.

Last week’s waves removed thousands of tonnes of sand and foredune from the eastern end of the beach, exposing the roots of old trees as well as rocks under the foredune, destabilising temporary steps (which were closed to the public on Thursday) and damaging more than 20 of the 1000 sandbags. A

huge section of foreshore at the eastern end collapsed onto the beach and was washed away.

Josh Clark, general manager of Dive Victoria, which is based in Portsea and uses the pier for its diving tours, said it was a windy week “but we get them two or three times a year at least�.

He said the recent erosion had ex-

posed rocks not seen in living memory as well as the remains of an old jetty. “There used to be an old pylon sticking out of the water by about 30 centimetres. Now it is well exposed with shorter pylons next to it also visible.�

Colin Watson of Portsea foreshore advisory group, who has been assertively lobbying the state government for several years asking it to find a solution, said the waves he saw last Tuesday were the biggest he had seen in more than 60 years of visiting the beach. “Big waves are now pounding a part of Fishermans Beach west of the pier.�

He said the extent of the swell hitting the shore had widened in the past six months or so.

Mr Watson said it might be possible to reshape the shipping channel that is believed to be causing the bigger swell hitting Portsea.

Divers, environmentalists and some locals blame the dredging of The Heads in 2009 for the destruction of the beach. The Port of Melbourne Corporation, state government authorities and the now-disbanded independent dredging umpire – the Office of the Environmental Monitor – blamed natural causes.

The cause may soon be known but then there will be debate about who will pay. However it is unlikely Portsea beach will ever be the same again.

Child injured at shire health centre Mike Hast mike@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire says it has removed potential hazards from its 17 Maternal and Child Health centres after an eight-month-old child was hospitalised with a head injury sustained at one of the centres.

On Friday, the shire confirmed an anonymous report received by The News that the child had been injured in an incident involving a wall heater.

The report claimed the child had been severely burnt but shire communications manager Todd Trimble said this was incorrect.

“The child was not ‘severely burnt’, but rather sustained an impact injury to the head as a result of a heater grate landing on them. The heater was not on at the time,” he said.

The report claimed the child was alone in a room but Mr Trimble said this was incorrect. “The child was on the floor next to the mother who was

talking with a Maternal and Child Health nurse.”

The shire’s acting director of sustainable communities, Robin Adams, said it was “the first time an incident of this nature has occurred”.

“The Maternal and Child Health team take health and safety very seriously. Staff members acted promptly to render first aid and continued to support the family in the following days.

The infant has made a complete recovery,” he said.

“The shire’s infrastructure team immediately completed a sweep of all Maternal and Child Health centres to remove any similar risks to ensure such an incident does not occur again.

“The family has met with council officers; they are continuing to use the service and there has been no indication that they will be taking the matter further.”

Mr Adams said that about 10,000 children up to age six were enrolled in the shire’s Maternal and Child Health program. “The program completes

about 18,000 consultations a year from 17 service locations.”

The News understands the child received minor plastic surgery on the scalp after sustaining a minor fracture.

It is believed the child pulled the grate away from the heater but the shire refused to confirm this.

The shire also would not say if it was required by law to report the incident to WorkSafe or other state government authorities. Nor would it say explicitly if it offered to pay all medical expenses.

Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics – one of the country’s best-known fireworks artists and producers – is run locally by master pyro-technician Rusty Johnson.

The designer and programmer uses advanced digital pyrotechnic and musical software to bring his vivid imagination to life.

“Our state-of-the-art computer firing system and design software enables our performances to be choreographed with music and all multimedia. As well, the use of special computer firing hardware allows fireworks to be fired from an unlimited number of locations to produce the ultimate extravaganza,” he said.

Starting with the Sydney-based firm about 20 years ago, Mr Johnson each year oversees about 100 displays in Victoria and Tasmania.

Major events have included the Sydney Olympics and Melbourne Commonwealth Games, as well as a host of New Year’s Eve fireworks displays, Sydney’s Easter Show, Moomba, Mornington’s Australia Day carnival and the Balnarring festival.

“We are able to feature a city’s landmarks - such as waterways, buildings, bridges and architecture to capture the audience in a pyrotechnic spell, taking them on a magical journey,” he said.

Examples include extravagant displays featuring the Sydney Harbour and Westgate bridges.

Success at international events includes last month’s win in one of the biggest fireworks competitions in the world – the Da Nang International in Vietnam.

Howard’s 21-minute display outclassed those of competitors from South Africa, United States, Poland and the host country, with fireworks lighting up the skies over the Han River.

Their ‘Colourful Serpent Symphony’ theme is said to have thrilled spectators with its dazzling fireworks display.

“The team’s performance clearly showed off their long experience of designing and manufacturing fireworks, and producing perfectly choreographed shows, along with the applications of an integrated firing system,” the organisers said.

“After gaining third place in 2009 it was very pleasing to come home with the gold this year,” Mr Johnson said.

His staff includes two full time pyrotechnicians and up to 17 contractors – mostly local – who work with the event management and production teams to ensure every phase of a project results

in the best pyrotechnic performance from concept to realisation.

“We are a close knit team,” he said.

The Balnarring resident is married to Jennii and they have two children Maddix, 11, and Nyssa, 5. He enjoys fishing on his boat Secret Men’s Business in Western Port, sampling local fine food and wine and has a passion for red Italian motorbikes.

Mr Stevens, whose remarkable war record was recounted in ‘A new honour for Bomber Command veteran’ (The News 21/4/15), died on Anzac Day.

His funeral at Rosebud on 6 May was attended by many of the staff and residents of the Village Glen, where he and his wife Anita had lived since 1988. The service reflected the fondness Mr Stevens had formed for France and its people during those dark months in 1944: a bottle of French champagne sat on the coffin and songs by Edith Piaf were played over the sound system.

Late in 2014 the French president awarded him the highest level of chevalier (or knight) of the French Legion of Honour for “… risking your life for the liberation of our country 70 years ago”.

The presentation, delayed when he was hospitalised by a fall, took place on Thursday 16 April when the Honorary Consul-General of France

in Melbourne went to the Ti Tree aged care centre in Rosebud.

The article featuring Mr Stevens DFM in the special Anzac Day editions of the Mornington Peninsula News Group papers reported that he joined the RAAF in 1940, trained as a wireless operator and rear gunner and subsequently flew 62 operations in a Lancaster with Bomber Command before being shot down over occupied France.

Once on the ground, he worked with, and was hidden by, the French Resistance movement before escaping back to England.

Of all the stories which have appeared in our newspapers over the past decade, this one has prompted the greatest response from our readers.

The union says it is “awaiting further information to relay to members”.

RDNS spokesman John Allin said the changes would not impact on “exemplary” front-line care to clients.

“Advances in technology mean staff members don’t need to come into the office to work,” he said.

“All of our clients will be treated in the same way as they have always been.

“It should come as no surprise that some clients would be unsettled to hear there have been redundancies but our service levels will not be affected.”

CLIENT services formally provided by nurses at the former Royal District Nursing Service offices at Rosebud and Frankston are now being handled from Moorabbin.

The service has given assurances that the change will not affect “service levels”.

A revamp of RDNS operations across the state has also led to the loss of 45 full time nursing positions.

The RDNS says there were no forced redundancies at Rosebud or Frankston offices, although seven management staff “chose to take redundancies rather than work within the new structure”.

Federation Victorian branch secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said the union had “given our full support to RDNS members who have been affected by the major staffing changes, including redundancies”.

“While we cannot give specific redundancy numbers for Rosebud and Frankston, overall the RDNS in Victoria has lost about 23 full time senior nurse positions and 22 full time equivalent Grade 4 registered nurse positions.”

Ms Fitzpatrick said the RDNS expected the Grade 3 district nurse specialised role to take on a broader focus as a care manager.

“This will see about 24 full time Grade 3 registered nurses moved to the lower positions.”

RATEPAYERS are again being asked for their views on the shire’s waste recovery plan as pressure is said to be growing on the landfill at Rye, predicted in some Mornington Peninsula Shire reports to be full in two years or less.

The current draft ̔Municipal Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy’ follows several previous similar documents, including the 2009 ̔Municipal Waste Management Strategy’ and a proposal in 2013 following the Environment Protection Authority's refusal for a tip at the old Pioneer quarry on the Arthurs Seat escarpment.

The new community consultation was approved by councillors at the 11 May meeting. It is available on the shire website and the Let’s Talk Waste “community engagement” website.

The latest report’s major option for waste disposal is to enlarge the Rye landfill facility by opening a new disposal area, or “cell”. This was the shire’s preferred option in 2009, when Rye was considered capable of accepting waste until 2030. But by June 2013 this date had dropped to “between 2016 and 2018”.

In the current report Rye is estimated to be full by 2017, increasing the urgency of finding an alternative place to dump rubbish. However, the report states that “full development” of Rye would extend its life to 2041.

Even limited development would ensure Rye remained open until 2032 or 2028, according to the report.

Cost to households would vary according to which option the shire adopted, from $28.69 (partial development of Rye’s western portion) to

$58.36 for transfer of all waste off the peninsula from a holding area in Dromana.

The report is silent on the destination of waste if the Dromana option is chosen. The closest off-peninsula landfills are the SITA facility at Hampton Park, about half an hour away, and at Dandenong South. The shire has previously favoured trucking waste 102 km to Werribee or to slightly closer landfills at Sunshine and Deer Park.

The most favoured option – alternative waste technology (AWT), sophisticated high-temperature incinerators, as used widely in the US and Europe – is not available in Victoria. The Pioneer quarry appeared to be the anticipated solution for waste disposal until fierce community opposition and the EPA ruled it out.

The report states that an additional $6.5 million would be required over the next three years for the draft strategy. It does not say whether the $2.52 million raised in 2014-15 from the optional green waste bin service will contribute toward this sum.

“Sixty per cent of the funding is associated with extending the Rye landfill. The other large budget items are the weekly summer recycling service ($350,000 annually), extending the opt-in green organics to include food … and extending ‘no charge’ green organics weekends to include Friday ($130,000 annually),” the report says.

Extending the green organics to include food would cost $130,000 to establish and involve an annual cost of $300,000, it adds.

The report says the strategy “embodies best practice measures … and takes a number of critical steps towards moving the shire closer to its vision of zero waste”.

Award for ‘diversity’ volunteer THE chair of Peninsula Health’s Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Intersex and Queer community advisory group, Julian Conlon, won the Outstanding Individual Achievement by a Volunteer: Supporting Diversity Award at the recent Minister for Health Volunteer Awards.

Frankston Hospital’s stage 3 volunteer team, of which Mr Conlan is a member, was also nominated in the Innovation category.

Frankston Hospital’s Pink Ladies Auxiliary president Pauline Ellerby was nominated for a life-time achievement award for her 24 years of service.

“We are very proud to have such a dedicated volunteer as Mr Conlon at Peninsula Health,” Peninsula Health CEO Sue Williams said. “Julian is passionate about healthcare for everyone, bringing humour and warmth, as

well as his own healthcare experience, to his work.”

Mr Conlon: “I am really pleased that my work has been recognised and also that Peninsula Health gets another accolade.”

The win marks the sixth year in a row a Peninsula Health volunteer or volunteer group has won a Minister for Health Volunteer Award.

“We have an amazing community of volunteers that sets us apart from other healthcare providers,” Ms Williams said.

“Julian has been an integral part of local advocacy for the GLBTIQ community, including the landmark rainbow flag raising on Sunday at Peninsula Health sites and local councils for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) Day.”

Volunteers’ growing skills for all to see THE involvement and output of volunteers is not always apparent, however their work is being acknowledged this week, which has been designated National Volunteer Week.

One group that does keep a low profile but whose efforts are on show for all to see work behind the scenes at the Seawinds nursery at Arthurs Seat State Park.

“Tucked into the back of the park’s gardens are the heated greenhouses and work areas where these volunteers propagate up to 20,000 native plants a year,” Sally Nowlan of Parks Victoria said. “These are used for local re-vegetation projects by Parks Victoria and foreshore groups and committees.”

Ms Nowlan said the 30-member volunteers’ group was formed in 1992

and meets twice a week to collect seeds and use propagation methods and seed smoking “to produce thousands of seedlings”.

“Some plants are produced for specific orders, such as blackwood trees for Devilbend Natural Features Reserve, and other rare and unusual ones for special projects.”

New delay to pier opening OPENING of the rebuilt outer section of Mornington pier has been delayed due to problems with the way wave screens have been attached to the seaward end of the structure.

Ten large concrete wave screens have been removed and are being reattached using a different, stronger system.

The wave screens are a crucial element to protect the harbour from storms.

They have been installed on both sides of the pier to provide the best protection of the harbour since a pier was first constructed more than 150 years ago, however the harbour will still be vulnerable to big northerly storms.

A proposal by Mornington Yacht Club to build a wave wall running off at an angle from the pier’s end was rejected by the state government in 2012. It was part of a plan to build a private marina in the harbour.

Parks Victoria had hoped to open the pier last month. It is the second delay as bad weather last winter and spring also forced Parks to reschedule the projected opening date from last December to March this year.

Completion of the work had always been dependent to some extent on weather. Strong winds and rough seas last week did not help Parks Victoria contractor Johnson Constructions, which is using divers to attach wave screens.

A Parks Victoria spokeswoman said the pier’s completion had been delayed

by the installation issue and other factors including unfavourable weather. “The Mornington Pier Reconstruction Project is expected to be completed in mid-June,� she said.

Work ceased for five weeks over the summer to enable residents and visitors to access the 53-metre middle section of the pier, which was rebuilt between August 2010 and September 2011.

Work laying timber decking on the concrete base is continuing. Other work done since the end of January has included installing handrails and a low landing.

Completion of the pier will be followed by renovation of the pier forecourt, which will include re-laying of the cobblestone area, services upgrades, and seating, lighting and historical information signs. This will not restrict public access to the pier, Parks said.

In May 2012 the Liberal-Nationals Coalition state government announced it would spend up to $15 million to replace the 120-metre outer section, which had been closed since 2010 after storms damaged pylons and dislodged top deck planks in April, August and September that year. The money was the lion’s share of the government’s $23 million for local port infrastructure upgrades. When completed, the government will have spent about $18.5 million on the pier since 2010.

More than 250,000 people visit the pier ever year.

Swell result for charity walkers THE SeaSwell Peninsula Charity Walk by 367 enthusiasts last week raised more than $28,000 for youth mental health.

About 40 students, staff and parents of Rosebud Secondary College joined this third walk to raise funds for Headspace.

The annual walk is organised by a group of school mums. Starting at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse, the trek continues along the rugged coastline for 20km, or a shorter 10km option, finishing at Blairgowrie. “Our college community has felt first-hand the devastating consequences of the struggles young people can have with mental health and we support kids every day who struggle with this aspect of their wellbeing,� senior school coordinator Jason Albress said. “We wanted to walk together to raise funds, and also awareness around the vital services needed by

teenagers and young adults in this region. “The sand was soft this year but the weather beautiful so we had smiling faces all around when the walkers came to the finish.�

Foreshore car park plan â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;off courseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; THE shire council has released a draft management plan for Safety Beach foreshore that will guide its use over the next 15 years.

But Safety Beach Foreshore Landscape Committee is concerned replanting work it had done since 1999 could be removed to enable car parking areas to be sealed and marked.

Committee president Tom McCullough said that according to the draft plan, which was approved for public exhibition mid-April, at least two parking areas would encroach on plantations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hostile environment to grow plants. Volunteers from our group have laboured long and hard for many years and it would be very disappointing to see them go,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Some areas had been replanted multiple times after plants died due to wind, salt spray, drought and other factors, he said.

Mr McCullough questioned the logic of reducing some parking areas and expanding others with no net gain of spaces.

He said the committee was also concerned some proposed parking access points were not well placed, the worst being a foreshore exit opposite the BP service station at the Dromana end of Safety Beach where Point Nepean Rd becomes Nepean Hwy and curves inland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a very busy intersection and we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work out why youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d put another car park exit in there,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The draft plan by Sorrento-based Mark Travers Landscape Architect will replace one done in 1999 by Tasmanian consultant Inspiring Place.

Most of the recommendations made in 1999 were completed although some took until 2013, including the building of the Bay Trail bridge at Sheepwash Creek.

Budget’s $80m blow to port Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE future of the Port of Hastings Development Authority is in doubt following the failure of the state government to refinance its operations in last week’s budget.

Hastings MP Neale Burgess has accused the government of “siphoning off” $80 million that should have gone to the authority’s operations.

He said the “disturbing and cynical move” was a “further betrayal” from the Labor government which had provided no new funding for the area.

“Just five months ago the Port of Hastings was building a real future for our community, already providing more than 100 jobs and preparing to provide thousands more over the coming years,” Mr Burgess said. “Now the Port of Hastings Development Authority is just a shell, with the majority of the jobs gone and with Labor delivering the final blow this week by clawing back the remaining $80m of the project’s funding.

“This disgraceful decision is a major blow for jobs, businesses and the economy in the Western Port area and the south east region.”

More jobs are likely to go after Monday’s (18 May) meeting of the development authority’s board, with one insider putting staffing levels down to as low as 10.

Neither the Ports Minister Luke Donnellan or the Port of Hastings Development Authority answered questions emailed by The News.

He sees Al Tamimi as one of the next big things in the sport, and says Tonic proprietor Rod Martin – with whom he worked at the institute – is one man who can help further develop his skills.

Martin and his wife Amelia –formerly ranked 26 in the world - are putting a strong focus on junior squash in their venture which they took over in January. They are creating a junior development program at the eight-court venue, and have about 20 young players practicing Monday afternoons. Concertina walls allow for doubles play.

Tonic’s head squash coach Zac Alexander has been ranked as high as 36 in the world and is working full time at the club.

“Several pro squash players from around the world will visit the gym over the next few months for coaching and training leading into the Victorian and Australian opens in early August,” Martin said.

As well as the squash courts, Tonic has cardio equipment, Pilates, weights, group fitness classes, and personal training.

On Monday morning the authority said it had forwarded the questions to the government. Within 90 minutes it sent another email: “The Port of Hastings Development Authority has received funding in the budget to continue to manage the day-to-day operations of the port and to facilitate bulk opportunities.”

The previous Liberal-led coalition established the authority in January 2012 to plan for a new international container port.

The authority is responsible for managing existing trade at the Port of Hastings through an agreement with Patrick Ports Hastings, although the number of ships visiting the port has dropped in the past few years.

The authority’s website says round 100-150 vessels are recorded at the port each year, ranging in size up to 100,000 tonnes.

However, the reality is that the port has seen a decline in visits by big ships from about 200 in 2010-2011 to an expected 50 this year.

The authority also has “principles” which include caring for the environment and partnering with the community.

These principles could go part way to explaining why between eight and 11 of the authority’s staff, including its CEP Mike Lean (on at least one day), were available last to plant mangroves in mudflats near Lang Lang. On Monday five of the authority’s staff were helping on mudflats near Grantville.

“In a one line budget entry the Andrews government siphoned off the

remaining $80m from our port,” Mr Burgess said.

“Even though they said they were going to take independent advice on where to build our state’s second container port from Infrastructure Victoria and go ahead with it within 12 months of taking government - now just six months away - in this budget they’ve cynically clawed back the PoHDA money and stopped the work that even the greenest groups thought was of the highest quality and vital.

“As the budget surplus is only built on the [abandoned] Commonwealth EWL [East West Link] funding, clearly the $80 million that belongs to this community has gone elsewhere; maybe even to pay not to build a badly needed road.”

Mr Burgess said the Labor government’s attitude towards the Hastings area was in stark contrast towards the “hundreds of millions of dollars were poured into badly needed upgrades to local infrastructure and services”.

This spending had included $110m for port development; $16.3m for a new Somerville police station; $4m for a Somerville technical college; $900,000 for the Hastings jetty; and $81m for Frankston Hospital.

Cancer fight: Dr Leon Fisher backs an appeal by Peninsula Health to raise

money for ultrasound equipment with calls for healthcare services to plan for a rise in pancreatic cancer.

HEALTHCARE services need to plan for a rise in pancreatic cancer, Peninsula Health’s Endoscopy boss Dr Leon Fisher has warned.

His warning coincides with this week’s launch of the 2015 cancer appeal to buy the $500,000 cancer detecting machine.

“An endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic bronchial ultrasound machine is a critical piece of equipment for diagnosing and treating a range of cancers,” Dr Fisher said.

“Currently, local residents must travel outside our catchment zone to access diagnostic services for pancreatic cancer and are often put on long waiting lists.

“We have CT scanners, MRI scanners, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy … everything is at Peninsula Health except the EUS/EBUS machine.”

Research in the Medical Journal of Australia reveals pancreatic cancer is on the rise.

“The five-year survival rate is only five per cent, so early detection is vital,” Dr Fisher said.

“With an EUS/EBUS machine available locally, diagnosis will be faster and more accurate. It would happen at Frankston Hospital within days of initial scans, resulting in faster treatment.

“The alternative is invasive surgery, which carries serious risks, especially for frail patients.”

Peninsula Health CEO Sue Williams is confident the appeal target will be reached.

Dolphin deaths lead to tighter rules for fishing

Bay ‘wonders’ open up on dolphin walk ABOUT 250 people and many of their pets walked around the foreshore near Hastings for this year’s Dolphin Research Institute’s Walk for Western Port.

“We started the Walk for Western Port five years ago to open people’s eyes to the wonders of our bay,” the institute’s executive director Jeff Weir said.

“The event is a key part of the Institute’s i sea, i care ambassador program and this year 24 schools were at the walk, from the municipalities of Frankston, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula.

“This means that the experiences of the children on the day and the Western Port messages will be shared with

close to 15,000 people in their school communities.”

The event is supported by Melbourne Water, which is responsible for managing the 2232 kilometres of rivers and creeks that flow into Western Port.

Melbourne Water’s waterways manage (South-East region), Greg Bain, said that the bay’s environment was one of international significance and the event was a “great way” to learn more about the area and raise awareness of the many species that live there.

Mr Weir credited Melbourne Water’s Western Port Science Review with “opening up many of Western Port's secrets”.

“A key finding of the study is that the mudflats support more than one per cent of the world's population of six species of birds,” he said.

“They feed on a rich diversity of shrimps, worms and molluscs that live in the mud. To put this in perspective, one per cent of humans would mean over 60 million of us living in Western Port.”

Mr Weir said sediment was “one of the problems” facing the bay because “of our actions in the catchment”.

“Western Port's wetlands and mudflats act as giant kidneys to purify land-based run-off, stopping the bay from turning green like an aquarium with a clogged filter,” he said.

NEW restrictions have been imposed on the fishing industry following the deaths of eight dolphins and four fur seals during two offshore trips by the factory trawler, Geelong Star.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) says trawlers in the small pelagic fishery must now only fish during daylight while the Geelong Star has to prove if has taken “all reasonable steps … to minimise further marine mammal mortalities”.

Boats operating within a defined management zone would face a sixmonth ban on fishing if a dolphin died as a result of their operations.

The tightening of fishing rules is seen as a “significant win for marine mammals in Australian waters”, by Jeff Weir, executive director of the Hastings-based Dolphin Research Institute.

“Our goal should be to eliminate marine mammal deaths as bycatch, most critically because we don’t know enough about the vulnerability of dolphin communities around our coast, so much more research is required,” he said.

He said marine mammal deaths as bycatch in Australian waters is “bigger than the operation of the Geelong Star” and the DRI “welcomes the breadth of AFMA's announcement to include all small pelagic fisheries in Australian waters”.

“Eight dolphin deaths in two trips are unacceptable,” the AFMA’s CEO Dr James Findlay said.

“We have said all along that the vessel management plan was a live document and we would be adaptive and responsive to ensure that all reasonable measures are in place to minimise harm to marine mammals.”

Mr Findlay said the Geelong Star must be fitted with tamper proof cameras to monitor its fishing activity before setting sail for its third voyage.

“In addition to e-monitoring, two AFMA officers will remain on board to closely observe the vessel’s operations,” he said.

While encouraging the vessles operato, Seafish Tasmania, to work with marine mammal experts to ensure it stays “within the restrictive fishing conditions”, Mr Findlay said “all fishing poses risks that can sometimes lead to the unintentional harm to marine mammals”.

Mr Weir said the AFMA's night fishing ban and threat to close the entire fishery if any dolphins die in future operations “is a strong evidence-based response”.

“Some important research in this area has been funded by the federal government and these recent deaths confirm that this funding should be ongoing,” Mr Weir said.

“Where there are gaps in our knowledge we need to undertake more research and use the precautionary principle to ensure the long-term protection of marine mammals in Australian waters.”

Beleura House opens Pate pottery collection WORKS by acclaimed Melbourne studio potter Klytie Pate go on permanent display at Mornington’s Beleura House and Garden this week in an extension of the property’s gatehouse that has been described as a small museum.

Beleura director Anthony Knight said Pate (1912-2010) was the pre-eminent Australian studio potter and “a deservedly celebrated artist”.

Mr Knight said her work was well known to collectors of Australian studio pottery. “Pate was an influential ceramic artist who started teaching pottery in Melbourne before the Second World War. Her talent, flair and endless

experimentation shaped a prominent career by the mid-20th century, a rare accomplishment for a woman at this time,” he said.

“The Beleura Collection of Klytie Pate ceramic art is housed in a small museum. It might equally be named the Pate Twycross Gallery due to an extraordinary gift from Dr Will Twycross, the artist’s godson. It allows the display, appreciation, evaluation and sharing with our visitors of exquisite ceramic pieces [that are] decorative, functional or purely sculptural.

“Dr Twycross proposed the gift of a Klytie Pate museum at Beleura to honour the legacy of his

godmother and her husband Bill. The Pates were lifelong friends of his parents, John and Mary Twycross. The family has pioneer links to the peninsula. Recently, Dr Twycross worked with the National Trust to build a gallery at McCrae Homestead where his great-great grandparents, the Burrells, lived from 1851 to 1927.”

Dr Twycross said that “during childhood visits to McCrae, his mother would point Beleura out.

“She knew the connection between [Beleura benefactor] John Tallis, and the famous artists Christian and Napier Waller, who nurtured Klytie from infancy and guided her artistic destiny.”

He said John Tallis’s own Klytie pots were treasured in his house and had now been joined by “a magnificent collection built up over more than a decade by the Tallis Foundation”.

Tallis, the son of Sir George Tallis of J C Williamson theatrical agency fame, died in 1996 and left Beleura to the state. The house and garden has been open to the public since 2004.

Light falls on tenders in a dark, not stormy, night IN ROSEBUD, “a dark and stormy night” was threatening. This, the much-derided first sentence of the 1830 novel Paul Clifford was apt, even though this night was merely dark, pre-meeting. The popular English novelist Edward BulwerLytton followed up his opening purple prose with this: the violent wind was “fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness”. Phew! We had Neons.

That’s winter on the Mornington Peninsula, too, the cold darkness exacerbated by a distinct lack of biscuits for those warming their frozen fingers on a cuppa before the meeting.

But CW digresses, and will digress a moment more, on a subject that came up at the previous council meeting – repayment of a $10.45 million unfunded super loan.

Regular readers may recall the debate that raged about whether this should be repaid over three years or a decade. Dire warnings were issued by advocates of the longer repayment.

We’d all be rooned, one councillor not named Hanrahan warned. Another hinted at conspiracy. A third case was put at a decibel level favoured by teens with earplugs attached to iPods.

So, which was the cheapest way to repay the money? CW resorted to Money-Zine on the internet. Here is what it calculated:  Over three years at six per cent (about current shire interest on loans) the total repayment would be $11,444,732.87 – never forget the cents – for total interest of $994,732.87, or $331,577.49 interest

a year for three years.  Over 10 years at six per cent, $13,921,970.94 would be repaid, for interest of $3,471,970.94. That is $347,197.09 annual interest for a decade – about $15,500 a year more but extending for the full 10 years.

I rest my case, m’Lud. Repayment over three years was the right decision – assuming Money-Zine’s loan amortisation calculator can be trusted.

A last word on this: neither CW nor some of the gallery regulars could recall staff bringing a rescission motion to the council chamber, aiming to overturn a decision made by councillors voting in the community's parliament. It was not a good look: it should not have occurred, we agreed.

End of digression. The meeting on 11 May featured a petition from 21 supporters of the contentious RACV Club development plan at Cape Schanck, followed by questions from Cape Schanck residents – warned by the agenda of this petition – returning serve with some ferocity, raising such matters as a large increase in vehicle movements that will result from the huge development.

A tender for the Balnarring Recreation Reserve master plan excited some interest, possibly related to what someone had described as the “RollsRoyce” ablutions block to be built at Mothers Beach, Mornington, at a cost

of some half a million dollars by the successful tenderer.

Dromana resident Ron Musgrove stated in a recent letter to the editor of this newspaper that the winning tender was “$83,000 a seat” for six toilets and two outside showers. Shire staff told him “it is going to be a lovely building”, he wrote.

“The building,” Mr Musgrove wrote. “has got to be smaller than a family home. How the hell does it cost half a million?”

Many shire residents might echo that question. Certainly the Balnarring proposal drew questions on the shire tendering process, which attracted companies from as far afield as Eltham, Hoppers Crossing and Sunshine. Oh, and Dromana, too, home base of Maw Civil Pty Ltd, which won the work with a price of “$469,081.50 (excluding GST)”.

No toilet block is mentioned in the tender, except one to be demolished.

The work includes building three netball courts, moving cricket nets, a car park, drainage and “other associated works”.

Officers were closely questioned about how the tender procedure works. The iPRO Live system, staff said, is a contractor registration system including financial checks of tendering companies – including “if they’re going to go into bankruptcy” – any legal matters, WorkCover claims, any other matters against which the shire needs safeguards.

And so on. But what do we know about the provider of the information,

officers were asked. The response to that was also reassuring.

Cost estimates have been on CW’s mind, involving a far humbler project.

A quote of around $60,000 that came in to the shire was seen by a retiree very experienced in evaluating such jobs. Haggling and horse trading ensued, resulting in the quoted priced being almost halved.

Another highly experienced semiretired person in the same field said that often companies with a full book of work would put in a tender price “a bit over the top” for a job, not really expecting to win but very happy if they did. Holidays in Tuscany all round.

Perhaps the shire could examine ways to take advantage of all the skills lying idle around our idyllic villages.

A wealth of experience is playing golf and meeting cobbers for coffee day in day out. The Devil invented golf for idle hands.

CW once did work for the Certified Practising Accountants and wishes he had kept a copy of an article written when compulsory competitive tendering was imposed on councils. The article predicted two things would occur.

First, that over time council officers would lose their practical expertise and close knowledge of road building, rubbish collecting and so on, and second, private tenderers would grow large locally and globally and councils would be left with no option but to decide work on price – possibly prices decided in foreign capitals.

A GUIDE to help parents and other family members reach out to young people at risk of suicide has been published by beyondblue.

The Family Guide for Youth Suicide Prevention gives advice on how to have a conversation with a young person who may be at risk, what factors place young people at risk and the warning signs to look for.

About 350 people aged 15-24 suicided in 2013, the latest year for which data is available. This is double the number killed in car accidents.

“Families of young people are often really worried about them, but are too afraid to ask them if they are thinking of hurting themselves,” beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman said.

“That needs to change because talking about suicide does not cause suicide. In fact, asking questions may prevent suicide by showing the young person that someone cares.”

Ms Harman said the family guide contains potentially life-saving information, along with other practical tips and evidence based advice to help family members support at-risk young people.

“It may be exactly what’s needed to help you save a life or change one for the better,” she said.

The guide has specific advice on how to help young people who are experiencing cyberbullying.

A young person in crisis can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800; Lifeline on 13 11 14, 24 hours a day seven days a week; or beyondblue 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 1300 22 4636. There is also an online chat function at www.beyondblue.org.au between 3pm and midnight.

Sydney legal secretary became farmer and shire ‘first lady’ OBITUARY Gloria Peggy Spunner (nee Parkinson), 7 August 1928-24 April 2015, legal secretary, farmer, community worker, champion golfer A PACKED service at St John’s Anglican Church in Sorrento on 1 May celebrated the long life of well-known southern peninsula resident Gloria Spunner.

Gloria was a resident of the peninsula for 65 years, from the time of her marriage in the same church to Ken Spunner of Sorrento in August 1949. Ken always said he “imported” Gloria from Sydney at great expense; her parents Archie and Estella Parkinson and brother Des had moved to Blairgowrie the year before to begin fishing in Port Phillip and Gloria, a legal secretary, was visiting them when she met Ken, a wool buyer, at a New Year’s Eve dance at Sorrento

After a year working in the city, the couple settled at Nepean Park in an old house on a farm on Boneo Rd, part of which is now Rosebud industrial estate and the second 18-hole golf course of Rosebud Country Club. There they milked cows, grew fine grade wool as well as cattle, peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, tomatoes and potatoes, and raised three daughters, Suzanne, Kay and Gill.

In the early 1960s the family moved briefly to Burrabong at Cape Schanck before returning to the white house on Boneo Rd. Gloria, with her superb secretarial and organisational skills, became Ken’s partner in the business of farming and later in real estate. In the 1970s she supported Ken when he was elected to represent Bowen Riding in the Shire of Flinders, which included two

terms as shire president and chairman of the Western Port Regional Planning Authority. She enjoyed the role of “first lady” of the shire.

Gloria was secretary of Boneo Primary School committee and did regular canteen duty at Rosebud High School. Her great passion was golf and she became a champion player. She and Ken were founding members of Rosebud Country Club, where her wake was held. Gloria lived at Boneo, Cape Schanck, McCrae and Rosebud at various addresses. In April last year she and Ken moved to Ti Tree Lodge in Rosebud West and soon after celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. She is survived by Ken, her three daughters, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

LETTERS Visitor centre As the owner of a bed and breakfast I have been a member of Sorrento Tourism (defunct) and Beachside Tourism since they first began, some 20 years ago. Members have always felt that Sorrento needed a visitor centre and several attempts were made to set one up.

There was a caravan down by the ferry terminal for several years and Moonraker Dolphin Tours ran one from its office near the boat ramp, but that position was a bit out of the way.

When, at last, Beachside Tourism together with the Sorrento Chamber of Commerce built and opened the present visitor centre it was an immediate success.

I have volunteered there since it opened and have derived a great deal of satisfaction in doing so.

Now that there is an hourly ferry running between Queenscliff (gateway to the Great Ocean Rd) and Sorrento plus the new M11 freeway bringing more visitors to Sorrento and bypassing Dromana, there is a great need for a visitor centre in the main street of Sorrento.

It has been said that with modern technology visitors can Google their information. This is true only up to a point. The greater part of visitors are so called grey nomads who are not glued to their smart phones.

Further, Google or a booth, cannot provide a welcome to Sorrento, offer advice, suggest how to entertain children, say where the toilets are located, offer a smile, name the most suitable, accommodation, provide individual brochures, point out the best route on a map, say which shop has fishing licences, where the best fish and chips, or vanilla slices can be found, say where the best rock pools are and when the tide is right or have the latest information on local events.

Beachside members pay a brochure levy and for this they can be sure their businesses are promoted in the best possible way. As full time working members they are not always free to volunteer as hosts in the centre but a number of volunteers from the local community are doing so and finding new friends and a sense of purpose in doing so.

The centre needs the help of Mornington Peninsula Council to provide for two part time people to oversee the running of the centre, a small sum to pay for such a great benefit to both traders and tourists.

Having now read the article, I can’t understand his accusation.

Mr Lean said the authority would no longer be managing plans for a second container port at Hastings and that task was now in the hands of Infrastructure Victoria. He confirmed that future staff numbers would be determined at next Monday’s board meeting; that the authority was still funded (but did not reveal the allocation) to explore opportunities to expand bulk port facilities at Hastings; and that although other specialist studies would cease, hydrodynamic studies would continue.

So, both he and The News confirm that the authority’s role has been reduced to managing day to day operations and exploring bulk port expansion opportunities.

It all looks factually comparable to me.

As for Hastings MP Neale Burgess’s opinion that removing $80 million of funding was a disgraceful decision - we had an election. Like it or not, Victorians elected a government whose clearly expressed policy was to have Infrastructure Victoria advise on the best location for Victoria’s second container port. So, why fritter away another $80 million on studies in Western Port?

Although Mr Burgess invokes support for his utterances from “even the

Government policy It looks as if finally a government in Australia is doing what it said before it got elected. The Victorian state government seems to keep to its preelection slogan: no port extension for Hastings (‘Budget’s $80m blow to port’, Page 10).

I would like to congratulate it for not wasting any more money on the Port of Hastings Development Authority and put the money to some much needed use somewhere else.

With the Abbott federal government reneging on the $1.5 billion infrastructure money to help with chronic traffic issues in Melbourne, the state government needs to find money where it can. It's a pity that it was not possible to leave a little of this money for further environmental work around Western Port, that is if [Hastings MP Neale] Burgess’s crocodile tears are to be believed.

I hope Peter Rawlings didn't do himself any harm, sitting on the fence in regards to children in detention

(‘Christian arrests in Hunt’s den’, The News 12/5/15). However much he defends his [Liberal] party and blames the opposition for this self inflicted dilemma for Australia, the fact remains that there are still 227 children in our concentration camps.

This number was quoted by [Flinders MP] Greg Hunt. Even one child in a detention centre is too much.

The other fact is that the Human Rights Commission made the government aware of this unacceptable fact many months ago and was attacked fiercely by the government for it's "boldness" to speak out for the vulnerable.

I think kids in detention are much more uncomfortable and probably damaged for life than Peter Rawlings straddling the fence.

Close all these camps and stop blaming the victims of our foreign policy.

When a group of concerned Christians tried to get some action on the disgraceful imprisonment of children in our concentration camps for refugees, they where dragged away from Mr Hunt’s office by police at the behest of his staff and, one can only presume, Mr Hunt himself.

So much for democracy in Flinders.

As usual, Mr Hunt in the true Liberal way, blamed the messenger and tried to blacken their motives by asking why they didn't protest about the drowning of African refugees trying to get to Europe.

At least in Europe children don't end up in concentration camps almost indefinitely, like here. Shame Mr Hunt, you're losing us down here on the peninsula at a great pace.

Loyal to swami As followers for many years, we have chosen to remain loyal to the Mt Eliza ashram, teachers and community. No one denies that mistakes were made, least of all Swami Shankarananda himself. However, he is still a wonderful teacher and has been a compassionate champion to many.

The amount of help he has given to many over the years is amazing and always given in a spirit of love and generosity.

It is also worth noting that many of these people leveling accusations against him, willingly stayed for many years. During this time, they appeared very happy to be in his presence. If the situation was so bad and damaging to them, why was their demeanor always so joyous and why didn't they leave?

Their claims of fear and guilt just don't fit the way they acted at the time they were there.

Accusations of overbearing control are also strongly denied by the many ashramites we have spoken to. In fact,

it appears most of the control was by someone who was at the forefront of the accusations and this went against the wishes of Swami Shankarananda and Devi Ma. It is individual choice whether to stay or go, but continual attacks on those choosing to continue are both cruel and unnecessary, both to the individuals and the ashram community.

Praise for swami I have been greatly upset by the vilification of Swami Shankarananda in recent times and feel compelled to write of my positive experience of him and his work.

I have attended programs at the ashram in Mt Eliza for over 13 years and during this time I have always witnessed Swamiji to be a man of great compassion, wisdom and knowledge. He has always encouraged people to find their inner light, their power and live from that space.

I wish to keep practising his wonderful teachings and be left in peace to do so.

I believe the light should be turned on his attackers and what they stand to gain by their campaign of hatred, vitriol and greed.

Killer salt Six times more Victorians are dying as a result of high salt intake than on our roads.

That’s why VicHealth is launching The State of Salt: The Case for Salt Reduction in Victoria as part of Australia’s commitment to a 30 per cent reduction in salt intake by 2025.

We will work with governments, health groups, the food industry and the public to increase awareness and strengthen healthy policies.

Victoria is leading the way in tackling Australia’s high salt intake, but if we’re serious about achieving the 30 per cent target, it’s time for us all to step up and cut back. Taking the salt shaker off the table would be a great first step.

Train service to remain the same Compiled by Melissa Walsh THE secretary of the Frankston Football Club acknowledges with thanks a donation of £1 1s from Mr Booth. *** MR S. S. Price, dentist, of Melbourne, wishes it known that he will attend at Garroods’ Hotel, Frankston, this week-end, for the convenience of those who may wish to consult him. *** THREE of Miss O. Sherlock’s pupils were successful in the musical examinations for May, held by the Musical Society of Victoria. Among the names of the students who have passed are: Honors in piano, Pass in Theory, Willmott Croskell. Pass in Piano, Dorothea Thornell, and Florence Vines. *** THE married ladies of the Frankston Methodist Church have proved their ability to run a social evening. Judging from the finished style which was everywhere in evidence on Friday night last, it was not the first social they have had a hand in.

On account of not having advertised long enough, the attendance was not as large as it otherwise would have been, but the sum of £1 17s was taken for the Church Organ Fund, for which object the effort was made.

A new organ for the church was urgently needed, and since being installed has made things much pleasanter for everybody concerned, and to pay for it the church people have decided to hold socials now and again, to raise funds.

Sixpence was all that was asked for

admission, and included a splendid programme of songs and recitations, and a first class supper.

Mrs Jackson presided, and before closing the entertainment, called upon Mr Corlett to move a vote of thanks, as there was not a married lady present who had not helped, in some way, to make the evening a success.

Mr Jackson seconded the motion, and thanked all who had contributed towards the evening’s enjoyment, including Mrs Malcom, Mrs M’Cormack, Mrs Lawrey, Mrs Thompson, and Miss Sherlock.

The married men have volunteered to see the next social through, and it has been fixed for some time next month, when it is to be hoped their efforts will be crowned with success. *** A MEETING of the members of the Frankston Patriotic Committee was held in the Mechanics’ Hall on Wednesday evening, Dr Maxwell in the chair.

The meeting was poorly attended, owing to the inclement weather.

On the minutes of last meeting being confirmed, Dr Plowman (hon treasurer) read a statement of the state of the finances which showed that after the last meeting there was a balance in hand of £1 3s 8d, since then there has been collected £80 5s 2d, making a total in hand of £81 8s 10d.

Dr Plowman said that all the amounts received had been acknowledged through the ‘Standard,’ but he had received 10s from a gentleman at the train one morning just as it

was leaving, and when he came to enter it he had forgotten the donor’s name so he had entered it as ‘Unknown.’

The only expenses incurred was 25s for postage and printing. He suggested that £50 be forwarded to the Belgian Fund out of the money in hand.

The chairman said that it was for the meeting to decide how much would be sent. He thought the whole of the £80 was earmarked for that fund.

Captain Sherlock suggested that £60 be sent, and moved to that effect. Se- conded by Mrs Deane, and carried, Captain Sherlock, on behalf of the ladies’ committee said they were still pegging away, and though might not be able to send in as much as they did before, they would forward what they could to the treasurer of the fund.

Mr C. P. Watson, on behalf of Master Bachelor Garrood (3 years old) handed in £4, contents of his money box, to be given to the Belgian Fund. Dr Plowman here stated that he had received up to date for the fund the handsome sum of £242 7s 3d.

Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the following for their efforts in raising funds :Mrs Lewis, Miss Trenoweth, Mrs Dial, Langwarrin Tennis Club, Ladies Collecting Committee, and Master B. Garrood.

A meeting of the Presentation Com- mittee was held immediately after the above meeting, when the treasurer (Dr Plowman) reported that

after the last lot of watches and medals had been paid for and all other expenses met, there was a balance in hand of £7 2s 2d.

The proceeds of the last concert am- ounted to £11 10s 2d. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Oates, seconded by Mr Young, that the presentation of souvenirs to several other of the residents who had enlisted from this district be held over till the next public presentation. *** THE tender of Messrs Watt and Mathierson, Sorrento, of £352 15s 9d has been accepted, for repairs to jetty and approaches, at Portsea. *** OWING to the rain on Monday evening the entertainment to have been given by “Linco” the Master Magician, in the Frankston Hall, was postponed till this (Saturday) evening, when it is to be hoped the weather will prove more favorable, as we understand the entertainment is well worth seeing, and has only to be seen to be appreciated. *** NEXT Monday (Empire Day) the children at the Frankston school will be entertained in the school grounds in the afternoon and in the evening an up-to-date picture show will be given

MR Frank Church, one of the best known and respected residents of the Langwarrin district, passed away peacefully, at the Alfred Hospital, on Saturday evening last, May 15th.

Deceased, who was 47 years of age, had resided in this district for the last 30 years, and by his thorough integrity and fine genuine character, had earned the respect of the whole community, and much regret is felt by all who knew him at his death, at so early an age. *** THE train service on the Mornington and Stony Point line is, the Railway Commissioners told a deputation from the Federated Progress Associations of Mornington Peninsula on Tuesday, considered to be ample for present requirements.

They explained that they could not run the morning train to Melbourne and the evening train from Melbourne express north of Frankston, because this would necessitate additional trains, which present conditions by no means justified.

With the advent of electrification they hoped to be able to arrange through runs over longer distances than at present. They were considering a request made some time ago for an additional train about midday between Frankston and Mornington.

They promised to send an officer of the department to the district to inquire into the suggestion to establish a flag station between Crib Point and Bittern.

A right royal stuff up

By Stuart McCullough WHAT a wasted opportunity. Naming a child after its grandparents and great grandmother can’t help but feel like a massive compromise; one where the potential for something truly, mindblowingly awesome was squandered.

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. I suppose, as far as names go, they’re all right.

But they’re hardly going to set the world on fire, are they? How about something a little more memorable? Like Dakota, Madison, Blaze or Lolita. Honestly, it’s as though the Duke and Duchess have never been to Moe. The least they could have done is throw in a random ‘z’ or silent ‘ph’ somewhere. Just to make things interesting.

I get it – they’re aiming for something along more traditional lines.

That’s fine, but it’s still no excuse for being boring. Too much monarchy and not nearly enough anarchy for my liking. But there are still great traditional options available if you’re willing to go a little further back in time. Bathsheba for example, is as traditional a royal name as you’re ever going to find. So too is Jezebel.

Granted, there’s a long queue for the throne and (barring some Westeros-style hi-jinks) her chances of ever becoming Queen are slim at best, but there are plenty of splendid names for Princesses there for the taking. You can’t tell me that the world wouldn’t loved another Princess Buttercup, especially since the first one was fictional and has since married the President.

Princesses Fiona and Bubblegum are both wonderful role models, notwithstanding that they’re both cartoons.

Or, if you prefer your princesses real, Princess Leia would have made a lot of nerds very, very happy. Or, if you really want to bring the multitudes with you, surely Xena would have been an inspired selection.

But no dice. In fact, as I understand it, Beyonce wasn’t even on the short-

list. That’s a snub, if ever there was.

Good luck convincing Jay-Z to perform at the christening. It was, so we were told, a very special day for our country. I beg to differ. If it were an event of any real significance, chances are the child would have been given a traditional Australian name. Like Beryl or Shazzamataz. Maybe even Edna.

I once knew a girl called Debbie who was an amateur magician and traded

under the name ‘Abracadebra’. Honestly, what’s the point of being part of the British Empire if they’re not going to throw us the occasional bone in the baby-naming department?

The fault, clearly, lies with the parents. They ought to be the last people allowed to name their own child.

You’d have thought that after the debacle that was ‘George Alexander Louis’, their families would have intervened. Even the mere fact of three names rather than the regular two is grounds enough for a check-up from the authorities. These kinds of important decisions should not be left to two people who, frankly, are probably a little emotional. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that this is the kind of situation that SMS phone polls were invented for.

Now that child number two is here, I’m beginning to suspect they’re not giving my suggestions even the slightest consideration. I’ll admit I was a little crushed when, presumably because they both like Seinfeld but ‘Kramer’ was a little too out there; they named their first-born ‘George’. I still maintain that ‘Vincent’ was a great suggestion. Traditional, but not too obvious. Besides, having a ‘Prince Vince’ would have been great for everyone concerned. Or, if wanting something a little more low key, they could have avoided giving the young prince a name at all and just identified him with a symbol.

It has to be said the response to the entire blessed event has been kind of

absurd. To be honest, I’m not sure why anyone’s fussed. I mean, good luck to them, and all, but it does seem as though the reaction slightly outweighs the significance of the occasion.

Chances are, more column inches will be expended in this country on the fact that George now has a little sister than were needed to cover the entire British election. There’s a whole range of magazines that have gone absolutely, stone-cold berserk. Perspective, people; that’s all I’m saying. Sometimes I wonder if our unwillingness to sever the final, fragile cords to the Mother Country is based on an irrational fear that it will adversely impact the women’s magazine market. That’s not an especially sound basis on which to make your constitutional arrangements, but there you have it.

Now that I think about it, we don’t have to put up with this kind of nonsense. We, the people, have a right to choose the names of those who will lord over us in a kind of feudal hangover that makes North Korea look progressive. The revolt starts here. Strap yourself to your device of choice and make your feelings known as loudly as possible. With one, united voice, let us declare and almighty, ‘thanks, but no thanks’ to Princess Charlotte and a hearty ‘congratulations and welcome to the world’ for the latest addition to the right-Royal brood, Princess Muffin-Fingers Supreme. Not sure if it will give them extra votes. In all my years I rarely came across a small business owner who voted Labor, more a case of looking after their own. I recall many a discussion as a lad with small business owners on their perceived advantages with the Liberals, eventually abandoning the cause to save my voice. *** There are many things we can blame Billy Shorten for if inclined: sucking up to anything pro-USA, seconding Tony’s new security laws, conveniently ignoring those poor lost souls in detention facilities (Pacific Solution?) never forgetting the certainty that Billy, if ever elected PM, would retain negative gearing, family trusts and superannuation concessions. Another long sad story inviting thousands of opinions here and in Indonesia. An opportunity for politicians to say what they think will have popular appeal, to be in the news, in our faces. A big difference between Downer back then and our present Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, but who can really tell? Political nonsense, hypocrisy reigns. I prefer a good detective movie. We get some answers and they catch the guilty scoundrel.

Former AFL star sets the standard INTERLEAGUE

By Toe Punt FORMER Richmond, North Melbourne and West Coast Eagles forward Aaron Edwards has cut short his Bali holiday so that he can represent his league at the country championships this weekend.

Edwards had organised to go to Bali for a week, leaving last Sunday straight after the game against Frankston YCW, return on Saturday morning to play against Ovens and Murray.

However, upon hearing that the

team was travelling together by bus to Albury on Friday, Edwards rearranged his flights to ensure that he could join the team on the bus.

Peninsula Division chairman of selectors, John Hynes, who played at Carlton, captained Frankston Dolphins and coached Edithvale-Aspendale, said Edwardsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; commitment typified the dedication of the group in 2015. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reality is that we were embarrassed by Geelong FL last season and we all learned lessons from that, from the top at league level right through to the players,â&#x20AC;? Hynes said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have picked a large squad and

the commitment level of them cannot be faltered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A leadership group pretty much picked itself and they have driven the culture among the group â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Aaron (Edwards) is one of those, along with the likes of Ricki Johnston and Warwick Miller. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reality is that Peninsula Division is in the best three leagues in the state. Pythons on the slide PENINSULA LEAGUE

By Toe Punt PINES continued its slide down the Peninsula Division ladder after copping a hiding at the hands of Frankston YCW on Saturday.

The Pythons started the year in superb fashion and won its opening four games of the season, however, it is starting to realise that the powerhouses of the competition have a little more to offer.

Mornington was able to touch the Pythons up last week and it was Frankston YCW’s turn to give them a bit of stick on Saturday.

Coming off a loss against Langwarrin the previous week, the Stonecats again started slowly in their match against Pines.

The Stonecats trailed at quarter time before kicking seven goals to one behind in the second quarter to open up a commanding 38 point lead.

The second half saw the visitors kick seven goals to four to record a 16.21 (117) to 8.7 (55) victory.

Anthony Bruhn booted six goals for the winners to give him 24 for the season, while Dave Bodley took his season tally to 18 with four majors.

Kevin Lylak in his second game back was again one of the Stonecats’ best while Paul Minchington played his best game for his new club.

Guy Hendry was outstanding for the Pythons with four goals and his brother Beau was also at the top of his game.

It was hard to find many other good performers across the match though, although Paul McLean-Wilson tried hard.

Despite two heavy losses in a row, Pines still sit in third position on the ladder.

Mornington maintains its position in second place on the table after a solid 23 point win against Edithvale-Aspendale.

What we are seeing at the moment is that there are two sides (Mt Eliza and Mornington) flexing their muscles against those sides that we believe are good enough for the finals but not ready to challenge for the title.

The Dogs laid the foundation for the win with a five goal to one first quarter.

To Edithvale’s credit, they rallied and were able to restrict the home side’s onslaught and keep them to six goals apiece after the first change.

Emilio Bitters and Michael Gay in the ruck were outstanding for Mornington while Steve Mannix and Matt Clark shared the top votes for the Eagles.

Edithvale coach Graeme Yates said that his club was going through a transition phase and that consistency would be the biggest challenge this season.

“We lost a lot of players in the off season and while we have the nucleus, we have a lot of young boys who are trying the find their way,” Yates said.

“We are a young side learning but I think we are very capable of playing finals and that’s the aim.”

Langwarrin picked up where it left off last week against Frankston YCW and booted eight goals to one in the opening quarter to blow Seaford away by almost ten goals.

The Tigers were able to boot 13 goals to Langwarrin’s 15 after the first change but the damage was well and truly done at that point, going down 23.12 (150) to 14.9 (93).

Gerard Brown continued his outstanding season for the Kangas with five goals to have 18 for the year while Matt Naughton kicked four resting forward. Naughton has been rewarded for his season with an interleague call up.

However, it was a couple of recruits who stamped their mark on the club. Dale Binks, formerly of Tyabb, was outstanding for the winners, as was former Yabbies’ skipper Ethan Rahilly. Travis Baldock was fantastic too for the winners after crossing from Chelsea Heights.

Ricki Johnston is in career best form, which is why he is in the leadership group of the interleague side.

Rourke Fischer, fresh from playing at Collingwood in the VFL last week, was again Seaford’s best player, while Chris Fortnam and Luke Smith also worked hard.

Mt Eliza didn’t get things all their own way against Chelsea, winning 15.11 (101) to 11.6 (72).

The margin was 29 points in favour of the Redlegs at quarter time but the Gulls were able to boot nine goals to eight after quarter time.

Justin Van Unen booted four for the winners and Dave Willett and Scott Lockwood finished with three each, Darren Booth and Ben Landry were outstanding across four quarters.

Hudson Thomas snagged four for the Seagulls while Jason Clark, Todd Gardiner, Alex Smout and Jayden Attard were among the best players on the ground.

The Gulls went into the game without coach Brent Guerra, who is suffering from a hand injury.

Bonbeach won its third match of the season, beating Karingal 19.18 (132) to 9.6 (60).

Chris Bryan and James Maxwell booted three each for the Sharks while another ten players kicked goals.

Blake Simpson kicked four for the Bulls and was clearly among his team’s best, while Aaron Lees was also superb once again.
