Shire’s councillors are costly Neil Walker neil@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire councillors collectively spent about $480,000 on expenses over three years during part of the previous 2012-2016 council term.

The latest available figures show the shire's councillors are bigger spenders than their colleagues in either Frankston or Kingston.

Documents given to all councillors in March, show parking/travel as the largest expense for 11 councillors, at about $244,400.

Another $27,000 was separately spent on council alcohol supplies in the previous four-year council term.

Councillors in August voted to stop filling up council liquor cabinets at ratepayers’ expense.

The March figures were compiled by council officers the month after councillors debated how best to repay

alleged exorbitant spending on conferences and seminars.

The expenses exclude councillors’ $28,000 annual remuneration or $85,000 for the mayor over a 12-month mayoral term and superannuation calculated at 9.5 per cent of remuneration.

The shire’s 11 councillors collectively spent $135,357 — about $100,000 more of ratepayers’ money on expenses compared to neighbouring Frankston and Kingston councils — over a 12-month period in the 2015-16

Some of the extra costs can be attributed to shire councillors having to travel greater distances across the municipality than at Frankston and Kingston, but a breakdown of shows spending in other categories also exceeds that of neighbouring councils.

Workshop - but no guarantees for port Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au INFRASTRUCTURE Victoria is holding a “community workshop” at Hastings as part of its investigations into the need for a second container port for Melbourne.

Previous state governments – Liberal and Labor – have backed Hastings as a site for a new container port, but the current government changed tack and nominated Bay West in Port Phillip as its preferred location.

The first report by Infrastructure Victoria into the best site for Victoria’s second container port is scheduled to go to the Victorian Special Minister of State, Gavin Jennings, in May 2017.

The workshop in Hastings on Wednesday 23 November follows release of a discussion paper “Preparing advice on Victoria’s future ports capacity” in September in which Infrastructure Victoria warned “evidence we gather may not be conclusive enough to identify a preferred location”.

A similar workshop is being held at Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne’s west.

The workshops are part of the process “to inform our advice to government on options for a second container port”, Infrastructure Victoria says.

The work to “develop the port advice” by Infrastructure Victoria includes “technical investigations, analysing demand and supply scenarios, and providing evidence where there are gaps in knowledge”.

and evidence received, will also be assessed and considered.”

When announcing its investigation into the need and site for a second container port Infrastructure Victoria said a decision “is still likely to be a number of years away.”

The government agency also stated that it sees expanding existing ports or building new ones “a last option”.

It says the smarter approach is to make better use of existing assets, including port road and rail links, and to manage demand, such as spreading truck movements more evenly throughout the day and night.

Infrastructure Victoria has also warned that both Hastings and Bay

West require “significant dredging, reclamation of land (creating new land using dredge material), and construction of land transport connections”.

Environment impacts of developing either site will not be made in time for next year’s report as “both sites are located in or adjacent to environmentally-sensitive areas”.

The “Preparing advice on Victoria’s future ports capacity” discussion paper says the annual rate of increased container traffic being handled at Melbourne has levelled out and now sits at less than three million a year.

It says Melbourne’s limit is eight to seven million containers a year (Victorian Ports Strategic Framework, 2004).

Infrastructure Victoria says it would take up to 15 years for a port to be up and running and that, if built, it should be done in stages to avoid overspending.

Its costings for Bay West and Hastings will be based on a new port able to handle three million containers at first and have the capability of being expanded for up to six or 10 million containers.

However, Infrastructure Victoria’s report keeps referring back to the reason for its investigation as being if, and when, a new container port is needed.

The report also mentions redistributing the types of cargoes handled at the existing ports of Hastings, Geelong

and Portland.

“The most important thing to acknowledge about planning for future commercial port capacity is the high degree of uncertainty about future conditions,” the report states.

“Our main focus is on the need for, and timing of, a second container port, and where it might be located. In preparing our advice we will also consider the possible relocation of other trades between Victoria’s ports (for example, motor vehicles, chemicals, grain, break bulk cargo and fuel) or terminals for cruise ships, and what factors may drive any relocation.

“Reducing uncertainty while preserving flexibility is the key driver in our analysis of the timing for investment in new ports capacity. In the short to medium term, allowing the Port of Melbourne to grow to its largest feasible capacity is the most costeffective way of meeting increased Victorian container throughput.

“Maximising existing ports’ capacity ensures a second port is built only when it is needed.”

“The scope set out by government is clear. We need to provide advice on when to invest in extra container port capacity, and where – at either a Hastings or Bay West location,” Infrastructure Victoria’s CEO Michel Masson said when releasing the discussion paper.

RYE and Tootgarook primary school pupils sang songs, read poems and laid wreaths at the Rye RSL Remembrance Day service, Friday 11 November.

Rye principal Jacqueline Annable said the choirs sang a medley of Australian songs, including Waltzing Matilda and Lest We Forget and then led the whole group in singing the national anthem. School captains recited poems Remembrance Day and Remember Them, and laid wreaths.

Ms Annable said the service provided the 37 children with an opportunity to learn what Remembrance Day was all about.

“I was extremely proud of them and had a lot of people come up to me afterwards and say how the children had made the service special.”

Brindle’s flag flies again at Dromana FORMER Dromana State School student and art prodigy Ewart Melbourne Brindle went on to become one of the most recognised artists and illustrators of World War II, but his early days in Dromana are not forgotten.

Dromana and District Historical Society will hold a one-day exhibition next month, showcasing Brindle’s art and some of the memorabilia he took to the United States when his family moved there after World War I. The Australian-American (1904-1995) is known for his posters for war bonds, as well as wartime magazine illustrations and covers, and US postage stamps. A keen motor enthusiast, much of his later artwork featured pre-WWI Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts and in 1971 he published a book of portraits of Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts.

The young Brindle’s artistic talents were revealed early when, as a young school boy, he would sketch full-rigged ships plying Port Phillip, not far from the Brindle family home at “Sunnyside” in Boundary Rd, Dromana. Even as a child his illustrations were admired for their detail.

His family moved to America in 1918, where he went on to produce illustrations for magazines such as Saturday Evening Post and Women’s Home Companion, as well as posters for America’s war effort in the 40s and postage stamps, all of which are now iconic images of the war years.

His career exploded over the next 40-50 years, with his paintings now in the Air and Space Museum, Washington, the Society of Illustrators and other museums, and even Buckingham Palace.

Brindle’s Diggers Hat on Landing painting, which hangs in the RSL section of the

Peninsula Club, and Weerona, hanging in Dromana Primary School, will be part of the one-day exhibition.

Other memorabilia on display will include the duster he wore when competing in car rallies in America, two of the Diggers hats he used in his painting, his school books from Dromana State School, magazine covers and a painting of his much-loved Union Jack that was uncovered by his nephew in a box stashed in the attic in 1970.

The flag, the centrepiece of the exhibition, was one of hundreds made in 1901 to be hung in triumphal arches in Melbourne to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York.

The young Brindle had proudly flown his flag daily during the war, repairing the fraying cloth several times over the years before finally folding it away and taking it with him to America in 1918, where his artist father had found work with the Panama Pacific Exposition. Brindle re-discovered it in a box in the 1970s and decided to paint it on canvas, complete with the hastily-sewn repair patches and safety pins that revealed years of wear and tear.

He later wrote that he wanted to be buried in the flag when ready to “cross the bar”.

In 2012, Melbourne Brindle’s nephew Roger discovered this and some his uncle’s possessions and personal papers, many of them collected during his early years in Dromana.

Roger and his wife Margaret, who are holidaying in Australia, will be guests at the exhibition, at the Sandy Christie room at the old shire offices, Point Nepean Rd, Dromana, 10am-4pm on December 4.

“The game has two roles,” Geoff Fletcher, a member of the not-forprofit Mornington Peninsula Bridge Association, said.

“One is just playing this amazing game, which has been shown to help ward off dementia and improve shortterm memory. The other is to provide a social network, which is particularly valued by our older members.”

The association is encouraging people to learn to play the game on the peninsula at four clubs: Peninsula Bridge Club Mt Eliza, Mornington Bridge Group, Dromana Bridge Centre and Rye Beach Bridge Club.

“Playing bridge can expand your social life,” Mr Fletcher said. “It is not a solo sport because a minimum of four players is required, and there are more than 35,000 people playing bridge in Australia.

“Communication and social skills are enhanced as you meet new people, make new friends and build a bridge partnership.”

Mr Fletcher said playing bridge “certainly beats boredom”.

“It’s a fun and challenging card game, and, with all the banter at the table, it is very entertaining,” he said.

“Playing bridge can lead to a healthier brain, improved short term memory and the ability to concentrate.”

Mr Fletcher said university studies in the US had shown that playing bridge also increases the performance of the immune system. A big call, but anything’s possible.

Continued from Page 1 Last week The News again asked for full councillor expenses figures and was given details of conferences and seminars totals for each councillor during the previous council term.

The figures provided to councillors in March (four months before the first request from) show ADSL internet services provided to councillors are a major expense for ratepayers.

Councillors are provided with a wi-fi “dongle” to access the internet and online documents stored on council sites only accessible by council staff and councillors.

The ADSL costs, coupled with home phone line expenses, came to about $40,400 over three years.

Councillors’ mobile phones are a separate expense at $19,500 for all 11 councillors. Their expenses for a fax machine/printer came in just under $20,000.

Conferences and seminars cost ratepayers just under $109,000 from November 2012 until February 2016.

Meals, drinks, parking and travel expenses were often allocated as sundry expenses instead of being assigned to specific categories.

In August councillors in the previous council adopted a new expenses policy that gives councillors the right to each spend up to $30,000 over four years on such things as conferences and seminars ($16,000), education and training ($10,000) and entertainment ($4000).

THE driver of a Toyota Landcruiser was arrested, Tuesday 8 November, after allegedly driving south in the northbound lanes of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and crashing into a fence at McCrae.

Hastings police caught up with the 25-year-old Rye man at the intersection of Glendale Grove and Wattle Rd after he ran into a cyclone fence.

Leading Senior Constable Paul Turner said police were told the man left a service station on Peninsula Link at Moorooduc and drove south about 5.20pm. They received many calls about the car being driven erratically and speeding on its way towards Rosebud.

Patrols spotted the car on the Bayview Rd off ramp at McCrae, before it was driven back onto the freeway and along the median strip away from police.

The driver is expected to be charged on summons with evading police, drink driving and other traffic offences.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw the blue Toyota Landcruiser on Peninsula Link or the Mornington Peninsula Freeway that afternoon.

Lower speeds to ‘aid safety, ease confusion’

Taking a stand against violence to women MORNINGTON Peninsula residents are invited to be part of the solution to violence against women by attending a range of community discussions on White Ribbon Day, Friday 25 November.

Commentator and former independent MP Phil Cleary will head a 7–9pm discussion at the Commonfolk Coffee Company, 16 Progress St, Mornington. Register at eventbrite.com.au.

Cleary has been at the forefront of the campaign to stop violence against women since his sister was murdered by her ex-partner in 1987.

SPEED limits on several Mornington Peninsula roads will be lowered to “improve safety, and make the speed zones clearer and easier to comply with”, according to VicRoads.

The roads have been identified as having inconsistencies with varying speed limits, which the authority admitted “causes confusion”.

The affected roads are: Mornington-Tyabb Rd, east of Peninsula Link; The 3.5km stretch of MorningtonTyabb Rd, east of Peninsula Link, to be cut to 80kph to match the existing speed limit on either side of this stretch. VicRoads estimates the journey along Mornington-Tyabb Rd will take an extra 21 seconds.

Arthurs Seat Rd, William Rd to Cloud St. The speed limit along the 2.5km stretch of Arthurs Seat Rd, east of William Rd to Cloud St, will be cut to 80kph to match the current speed on this road (80kph to the east and 60kph to the west). The journey will take an extra 22 seconds.

VicRoads regional director Aidan McGann said the changes had been made after consultation with Mornington Peninsula Shire and Victoria Police. “We have made the decision to lower these speed limits to improve safety, make the speed zones clearer and easier to comply with,” he said.

“The crash history on these roads demonstrates a poor safety record and, along with community feedback, the decision to lower the speeds has been made in the best interests of all road users,” Mr McGann said.

“The reduction in speed will have minimal impacts on travel times, with only marginal increases in the time it will take to make your journey.”

Peninsula landscapes to be ‘linked’ THE Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network has been given $300,000 to be spent over four years linking native habitat and controlling weeds and pest animals.

The Linking the Mornington Peninsula Landscape – From Planning to Action project will involve several biolink plans which include improving waterways and wetlands.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Mornington Peninsula Landcare Network to begin the implementation of local biolinks plans and provide a practical demonstration of community-based catchment management,�

Speed feedback MORNINGTON Peninsula residents are being asked to give feedback on the shire’s plan to lower the speed limit along Melbourne Road in Blairgowrie.

There is an 80kph speed limit on a section of Melbourne Rd between Iolanda St, Rye and Waverly St, Sorrento, but the council is proposing a 70kph limit along the entire length of Melbourne Rd. Feedback will be submitted to VicRoads.

Shifting sands: Ken Tainton says sand removed from the boat ramp at Tootgarook should be taken further down the beach to avoid it being blown back to where it came from.

Sand storage upsets ramp user CAPEL Sound foreshore management has denied that inefficient maintenance practices at Tootgarook are causing unnecessary sand movement and sand stacking.

Foreshore manager Caro Baring said a boat user’s claims that not enough was being done to stop sand blowing back onto the ramp after removal were incorrect.

She said the maintenance program catered for about 4000 boat owners who used the ramp every year.

“Our maintenance of the foreshore involves moving the sand from the boat ramp away to the east side, so it’s

not that sand that ends [back] up on the ramp,” Ms Baring said.

“The natural movement of sand and water along the coast means that sand will always build up over time.”

But fisherman Ken Tainton said the method of “stacking” the sand after removing it from the launching ramp was inefficient and caused unnecessary ongoing maintenance issues.

“The sand is stacked three to four feet on either side of the ramp but gets blown back onto it,” he said.

“The way the sand is being dumped back onto the beach is causing the beach to move further out to sea

and creating a channel which directs the water and sand back where it shouldn’t go.

“Moving the sand elsewhere would reduce the number of times the ramp needs to be cleared”.

Ms Baring said the annual maintenance program, which started this month, adequately addressed issues of sand movement.

She said the foreshore management was continually investigating the best ways to maintain the foreshore, and worked with Parks Victoria and the Department of water, environment, land and planning.

Call for more road crossings to beach Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au INCREASINGLY busy roads and congested traffic are making it hard for families to get to beaches from McRae to Sorrento – let alone have a swim.

The opening of Eastlink, allowing easier access to hordes of visitors, particularly during the peak summer season November-April, has swelled the number of daytrippers and road users.

This, coupled with few designated road crossings, has made it “virtually impossible to cross the road safely”, mother-of-four Tiffany Wills, who regularly visits her mother-in-law at Kevin St, Tootgarook, said.

“We live 50 metres walking distance from the beach.

But to cross Point Nepean Rd safely with our four children, we either have to walk about a kilometre to cross at the nearest pedestrian traffic lights at Carmichael St, or we have to drive 40 metres, which is ridiculous,” she said.

“And forget about taking the stand-up paddle board or beach umbrella – there are simply no breaks in traffic to cross safely; it’s just impossible year round. I’m tempted to go and buy my own lollipop sign.”

Ms Wills said the situation had become worse over the years. “I’m trying desperately to do something about it, such as getting some more pedestrian crossings, lights, or refuges, so that people can cross the road safely. I'm lobbying my neighbours, politicians, councillors and VicRoads.”

She has set up an online petition and says she will canvas more houses and local shops when she is down the coast in the next few weeks and over summer, and has called on VicRoads and Mornington Peninsula Shire to slow traffic flow and create breaks in the traffic.

“Local residents and visitors - many of whom are young families with small children and the elderly - should be able to cross the road and access the beaches in relative safety without fear of being hit by traffic in both directions,” she said.

“To date, despite numerous letters and phone calls to the council and VicRoads, it appears that very little consideration has been given to a revised pedestrian safety plan.”

Dog ban follows years of non-compliance I am surprised Wayne and Brenda Harding (“Dog ban ransom to protect a few birds� Letters 1/11/16) are bewildered by reversal of dog regulations in the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

The decision by the state government to revert back to national park “no dogs� regulations was supported by Labor, Liberals and Greens. It will help protect more than 36 species that are under pressure in our national park, not “just a few birds�.

A 10-year education program has not worked.

Figures show dog owners continued to show no regard for the national park dog regulations.

I have photos taken by volunteers to prove this, some taken in the last couple of weeks at 16th Beach.

Dogs are a proven threat to native fauna.

Instances of wallabies being chased by off-leash dogs are well documented. Motion cameras have filmed dogs running through breeding areas crushing nests and off-leash dogs have killed beach-nesting bird chicks.

In 2013 Parks Victoria ran an extensive public dog regulations review campaign. The majority “local� vote was to discontinue dogs in the Mornington Peninsula National Park. However, an independent group analysed the submissions and recommended the dogs “on-leash� regulations remain.

There are no zoned areas on any beach for beach-nesting birds. These birds nest above the high tide line and feed at the water’s edge.

High tides and avian predators are a natural phenomenon. Foxes can now be targeted more effectively in some areas where baits are now safe to use. Four years of monitoring hooded plover nests with motion cameras has only picked up one cat.

The national park is a crucial breeding ground for all beach-nesting birds and is also used as a stopover for many birds flying to other parts of the state and has the second highest density of hooded plovers in Victoria.

Parks Victoria’s “Healthy parks, healthy people� motto is for all; It should be a safe home for native plants and animals and a place for families to visit, enjoy and learn about the environment.

Saving wildlife I too like walking my dog through the Mornington Peninsula National Park, but totally agree with and support the ban on dogs.

Our wildlife needs all the help and support it can get. Hopefully the dog ban and subsequent eradication of all feral species will help lessen the pressure and impact on our precious and unique flora and fauna and see their numbers increase.

In their letter (“Dog ban ransom to protect a few birds� Letters 1/11/16) Wayne and Brenda Harding state “... studies have shown that they (hooded plovers) are more vulnerable to foxes, feral cats, ravens and high tides� rather than domestic dogs. This is quite right. But an important step in maintaining and increasing the population of this endangered bird is to easily remove domestic dogs and concentrate on other mitigating factors that threaten all of the native species along the coast without the fear of lethally baiting untargeted domestic animals.

But it’s not just the hooded plover that are under threat. Many other bird and animal species are impacted by domestic dogs and introduced feral animals that cannot be controlled safely,

humanely and ethically without the dog ban.

I live close to the national park and have never had a problem walking on the narrow dirt roads despite there being no footpaths, pot holes, puddles and occasional flooding. I hope all dog walkers can find other suitable places to walk their pooches and still enjoy the national park.

Hopefully too they will continue to “... pick up rubbish on the beach, report wildlife in distress, report abalone poachers and put out fires�.

They should also look out for an increase in native flora and fauna including hooded plovers, nankeen kestrels, sooty oystercatchers and many other species we are blessed with.

Thoughtless owners What is wrong with Summerhill dog owners, their dog ownership habits are disgusting.

Every day when my wife and I go for a walk there is always fresh doggy doos to keep you alert as to where you walk. One morning the doos were spread over about 20 meters, the poor dog was not even allowed to stop to do his business.

Another habit these thoughtful dog owners have is picking the dog’s doos up, putting it in a bag and then, guess what, they throw the bag away.

One morning we counted seven used bags just chucked into bushes and other discreet places, not very good for the environment that half these people would preach about.

What’s he on about? (“Landfill collapse”, Letters 1/11/16). Of course if you take “landfill” waste and dispose of it somewhere the environmental outcome is the same. The only way this changes is if the volume is reduced.

The previous long standing policy of Mornington Peninsula Shire was to sponsor an alternative waste treatment plant that could reduce landfill waste by up to 75 per cent.

This policy was scrapped when the concept of zero carbon was introduced, requiring waste to be trucked somewhere else (at $27 a household) so that the carbon emissions would not be counted against the peninsula.

The Fraser stance induces dubious statements in support of a misguided policy of carbon neutrality, one that cannot be achieved while the [Rye] tip remains open.

It’s our rubbish tip and we have a responsibility to dispose of it in the most environmentally benign manner possible.

Minister’s wrong turn On the very day when delegates were meeting in Morocco to try and convince all governments to abide by their environmental commitments, our Minister for the Environment, Josh Frydenberg, went on air to complain about the closing down of the Hazelwood power station, the most polluting station in Australia. The minister’s brief commits him to protecting the environment by lowering our CO2 production.

Those who have expressed surprise at the closure announcement have been asleep for a long time because environmental and other groups have been requesting this closure for years, especially after the fires in 2014 when much of the Latrobe Valley was subjected to heavy smoke pollution which caused much human misery.

It would be refreshing if the minister, instead of complaining, congratulated the French company on its policy to concentrate on renewable energy.

The minister could provide support for the valley at a time when its residents need every assistance to replace the coal industry with other employment.

I think the minister should make up his mind as to whether he wants to be Minister for the Environment or the Minister for Coal.

After World War II this country evolved into a formidable industrial powerhouse with factories and industry everywhere. Jobs and growth, innovation, production and wealth.

Our governments owned the railways, water,electricity, even some banks and insurance companies.

A strong union movement ensured very good wages and conditions. At one stage we had the highest living standards in the world. The communists and China were, of course, our worst fear and we had tariffs to protect us from slave labour imports.

Then, somewhere in the 1960s, some of our financial “experts” and inept, or worse, politicians started a campaign to reduce tariff protection. I distinctly remember them saying that we were living in a fool’s paradise and there would be no jobs for our grandchildren. We must compete on a level playing field.

Now,with no tariff protection and free trade agreements there is little industry left. We gave it all to China, for free. There are few jobs for my grandchildren, fewer still for young adults with talents and aptitudes in such fields as engineering, physics, mathematics and chemistry.

The missing link With traffic at peak being restricted to start, stop speeds between 0 and 40kph on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and residential roads facing increasing levels of congestion, it is time to start to planning for future growth.

Wells Rd, White St, Springvale and Governor roads are all under increasing levels of pressure, and this is forcing traffic off these arterials to join the rat race through Waterways Estate, the Braeside industrial district and down back streets.

The Mordialloc by-pass is a continuation of the freeway from Springvale Rd to the Dingley by-pass and, if introduced with full grade separations, would permit speeds of 100kph, unlike the Dingley by-pass. This could be combined with the widening of the freeway south of Springvale Rd to encompass a third lane, and would shave a considerable amount of time off the commute of motorists whilst servicing the south east and Mornington Peninsula.

VicRoads’ preliminary study concluded that the by-pass is feasible and would “significantly reduce volumes on Springvale Rd”. While the former Napthine government had commissioned studies for the Mordialloc by-pass with a commitment to complete the first stage, a spokesperson for Roads Minister Luke Donnellen has stated that the project would be required in the medium to long term.

The location of the by-pass is not a recreational space where dogs are walked, but a land reservation that has been in place since 1969 specifically for this project. VicRoads admits further investigation into the impacts on flora and fauna is required, which could be mitigated along with the impacts to residents.

It is understood that this project is under active consideration by the Liberal and National parties for the 2018 state election and could be a potential drawcard to win votes in the marginal seats of Mordialloc, Carrum and Frankston.

I have just discovered a gigantic mountain of concrete at Rosebud foreshore jetty.

There has been no mention of it in the papers and in my opinion it was a secret council decision, constructed under the cover of winter, with a tri-level [block of units] nearby.

The children’s Playspace is an environmental health and safety problem which will leave the council open to litigation .

The extra eight car parks are insufficient for the high rise and eateries on the ground floor, let alone a parking problem for those who may attend the concrete mountain named Rosebud Foreshore Playspace.

Last and most importantly, the cost for this bungle must be in the millions.

Committed to the cause NEITHER age nor freezing weather could keep Rosebud’s Shirley Sawyer, 77, from completing the 25km ‘One Day to Conquer Cancer’ walk at Albert Park on 21 October.

Despite icy cold and windy conditions, Mrs Sawyer completed the walk in about six hours, describing it at the time as “overwhelming”.

He daughter Dianne Button, who accompanied her mother on the walk, said entrants had to raise $500 each to participate and her mum had already begun fundraising for next year’s walk.

“It was hard for her, but when she got home she said ‘I could go again’,” said Ms Button.

Getting fit for the walk was easy for the women, who are both dog lovers involved in the dog training industry.

“I have four dogs and mum has two, so we walk them all the time and are pretty fit for walking.”

Ms Button has been participating in the walk for the past eight year to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. She and her twin sister Karen are cancer survivors and have now been diagnosed with the genetic mutation, Lynch Syndrome.

Summit leads the way to ‘ageing well’ RESIDENTS are invited to share their ideas and experiences at a Positive Ageing Community Summit, 10am-2pm, Thursday 24 November.

Ageing is a hot topic on the Mornington Peninsula, which has the second oldest population cohort in Victoria, with more than 30 per cent of residents aged over 60. This compares with the Melbourne metropolitan average of 17 per cent.

The number is expected to grow to more than 33 per cent by 2030.

The rooms are in a good position, being just in front of the Frankston Pier, and should command a good summer trade. *** MORNINGTON Shire Council report is unavoidably held over till our next issue. *** THE many friends of the McDonald family will be pleased to learn that Pte D. McDonald, recently reported missing, is now a prisoner of war in a German Camp so the authorities. advise. *** MESSRS Adamson, Strettle and Co will hold their usual monthly sale at Tanti, on Monday next for which a good yarding of cattle, sheep, pigs, and sundries is advertised. *** THE following pupils of Miss D. Overton, D.M.S.V., were successful in passing the Intermediate Pianoforte Section :—Miss Violet Cole, of Tyabb, and Master Harry Michael, of Mornington Junction. *** MR Neil McDonald, who has been in charge of the Presbyterian Church work in Frankston and district, has been transferred to Maldon. As he is to take charge of his new appointment on Sunday, November 26th, next Sunday will be his last in this district. Services are advertised. *** TO the recent Exemption Court report an error occurred when it was stated Edwin W. Draper, Seaford, gave evidence that he had three brothers on active service. We regret having made the error. Mr Draper has two brothers on active service. *** IT will be seen by an advertisment in another column that a meeting of the contributors to the various presentation funds to Frankston volunteers will be held at the Mechanics’ Institute, on Monday next.

The chief business to be submitted will be the arranging a sixth presentation to Frankston volunteers and the desirability or otherwise of afterwards closing the fund.

A good attendance is looked for, to fully discuss the subject. *** AT a meeting of the Council of Agricultural Education on the 9th November, 1916, a reslution was passed providing for twenty scholarships being offered at the agricultural colleges.

These scholarships, which are tenable for three years and are valued at £75 each, will be awarded on a selection basis.

Applications from boys who will be not less than 14 years or more than 17 years of age on the 1st Feburary next will be received by the secretary of the council up to 31st January, 1917.

Certificates of character and educational standard should accompany all applications. A scholarship similar to the above is also being offered by the Royal Agricultural Society. *** Messes Brody and Mason will hold a clearing sale of cattle, horses, farm implements etc on the farm Spring Bank, on the Dandenong Rd, Frankston, this afternoon, commencing at three o’clock. As the owner is leaving the district the

sale will be without reserve.

On Wednesday they will also hold a large clearing sale of farm implements, horses, cows, pigs, household furniture etc on account of Mr H. J. Legg (who is leaving the district through illness) on property. Bungower Road, Somerville cross the intersection of the Cranbourne Road, past Mr Sullivan’s property. The auctioneers recommend buyers to the sale as being well worth their attention, the stock all being young, and the furniture nearly new. Since the above was in type, the sale of the Spring Bank Farm has been indefinitely postponed. *** THE anniversary of the Frankston Methodist Sunday School was celebrated on Sunday last, when the Rev A. G. Adamson B.A. occupied the pulpit in the morning, afternoon and evening, and gave three most nteresting addresses to excellent congregations. *** THE social evening held in the Mechanics’ Hall on Friday 10th Nov, by the Frankston Red Cross Society, to provide Xmas Cheer for the Military Hospital at Langwarrin, was in every way successful.

The hall was crowded and those who found no pleasure in dancing were provided with a musical programme of no mean order.

The artists were all in particularly good voice, especially our old favorite, Lieut Jennings, who was recalled repeatedly and delighted everyone with his numbers.

Mrs C. P. Watson played the accompaniments during the evening in excellent style.

Misses O’Grady, and Laurrisen, Mrs Malcolm, Mr Garrood and Corp Whitburn assisted with the programme and their items were all highly appreciated.

A splendid coffee supper was handed round to which everyone did full justice and the programme continued with renewed energy till small hours of the morning. *** THE Somerville Patriotic League in order to procure much needed comforts for the lads at the front have organised a cafe chantant and sale of gifts to be held in the Somerville Mechanics’ Hall, on Saturday next, 25th inst.

The function will be opened at 3 o’clock in the afternoon by a concert, at which they have secured the services of Mrs Statters, and Mr Walter Jennings, two singers well and favorably known, and several others.

During the afternoon Mrs Hewison, of the Lady Mayoress’ Patriotic League, will give a short address on the League.

Afternoon tea will also be prvided. The League (through Mrs Geo. Griffeth) offers a cordial invitation for all who are interested in keeping our brave boys fit to attend and add their mite to this deserving object. *** THE Public gave refreshments so liberally to the Red Cross social held on Friday evening last, that, although the gathering was quite as large as expected, there was enough cake left over to satisfy twice as many hungry people.

The Red Cross Committee generously handed this over to the Wattle Club which was entertaining sick and wounded soldiers on the following day.

The act was highly appreciated by the Club.

Several boxes were packed with what was finally left over, and sent to different hospitals.

By Stuart McCullough I DID not see it coming. Looking back, there’s every chance that history will record this as the week that previously earth-bound pigs sprouted wings and started their own commercial airline. Doubtless, those who dislike science will refer to the events of the past few days in support of their position, citing the fact that hell has just frozen over and turned itself into a twenty four hour ice-skating rink as evidence that climate change is bunkum. Quite honestly, I thought the chances of Donald Trump being elected President were much the same as me being crowned Miss America. But in dismissing the Donald I overlooked the one ingredient essential to every reality television show – a surprise ending.

I swear, when the President-elect took to the stage to give his victory speech, the music sounded a lot like The West Wing theme. The moment had a distinctly showbiz feel and it was as if television and politics had finally merged to become the same thing. Indeed, as the Donald strode onto stage, I was reminded very much of that moment when contestants won ‘the lot’ on Sale of the Century. Had Tony Barber appeared on stage to take him through the showcase I wouldn’t have been a bit surprised. But soon the shock will subside and the next question the world will want answered is who, precisely, will serve in a Trump Cabinet?

If there’s one thing I know about television it’s this: never mess with a winning formula. Think of Moonlighting when Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd finally got together and

managed to snuff out the spark that had sustained the entire series. It requires a top-notch diplomat and I can’t think of anyone as qualified as Paris Hilton. Even her name is international. Chances are, she has ordered products on line from many of the countries she’d be required to visit. Also, given the family business,

she’ll always have somewhere to stay no matter where she is. The Government will save an absolute packet.

When I think of the Secretary of Defense, my mind immediately turns to Mr. T. I pity the fool who dares suggest otherwise. He started in security, both as a bodyguard and a nightclub bouncer. Granted, he’d have to stay put at the Pentagon given his reluctance to fly but his experience as a soldier of fortune is bound to come in handy in his new job. From First Class Sergeant to Secretary is not so large a leap.

kind of attention they need, especially if series 4 of The Wire is any guide.

That’s why I’m suggesting Gabe Kotter of Welcome Back Kotter. Who better to met the needs of troubled youth? Having managed to educate both Arnold Horshack and John Travolta, it’s clear that Gabe is nothing short of a miracle worker.

Other portfolios demand more imagination. What better way to reaffirm America’s commitment to the ANZUS alliance than to give Housing and Urban Development to our very own Keith Urban? Other jobs will be easier. Rick from ‘Pawn Stars’ would be a natural as Secretary of Commerce and the role of Secretary of Agriculture will be occupied faster than you can say ‘Snoop Doggy Dogg’ with a mouthful of peanuts. As for Homeland Security, it’s a job that has then name ‘John J. Rambo’ stamped all over it.

Sadly, Leonard Cohen is no longer available to serve. It’s a matter of exquisite timing that a man who once sang, ‘I have seen the future and brother, it is murder,’ should pass away at such an odd moment in human history. For what it’s worth I’d have picked him for Human Services as that’s exactly what his music has provided. These are unsettling times and, as ever, music remains a salve.

By IT Gully MT ELIZA is in the box seat for victory after scoring 285 against Moorooduc on a difficult day to play cricket across the peninsula on Saturday.

The Mounties scored at a quick rate in its 62 overs with skipper Justin Grant scoring 59, Tim Strickland 56 and keeping opener Tim Clarke getting 54.

Ben Marsh was outstanding for the Ducs with 5/96 off 20 overs, giving him his biggest wicket haul for the season. Greg Pullen was also lively for the Ducs with 3/67 from 16 overs.

In reply, Moorooduc is 1/32 after Brett Wilson was sent packing without

scoring.

Mornington has given Peninsula Old Boys something to aim for after scoring 212 on Saturday at home.

There were a number of Mornington batsmen who got starts but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go on with it. Luke Popov scored 35, Matt Foon 34, Brad Lynch 30 and Charlie Parker 26.

Jon Forrest was at his menacing best with 4/84 from 33 overs, while Eivion Bowen picked up 4/44 from 22 overs.

Whelan dominates with ton SUB-DISTRICT

By IT Gully MPCA star Matthew Whelan was at his very best again on Saturday, scoring 128 as Tootgarook racked up 7/307 against Carrum.

The century takes Whelan to more than 200 runs for the season and maintains his status as the most dynamic and devastating player in MPCA Sub District cricket.

The Frogs got away to a sensational start though, which allowed Whelan to attack the game.

Travis French scored 57 and Corey DeBruyn 50 in an opening stand of 104 while Jake Millar hit 23 of the next 74 runs batting with Whelan.

Cory Foster was the best of the Carrum bowlers with 3/64 while skipper Jake D’Atri snared 2/81 from 28.5 overs.

Balnarring skipper Brent Murdoch was also at his vintage best on Saturday against Skye, hitting an unbeaten 105.

Nick Aldenhoven was also among the runs with 43, Nathan Kleinig hit 42 and Jackson Hannah helped himself to 40 as the saints racked up 6/294 in their full 80 overs.

Ballam Park will need to be at their best with the bat to score the 206 runs needed for victory against Dromana.

The Knights did reasonably well to keep the Hoppers to just over 200 in 80 overs. That was as a result of some sensational bowling from Zach Clements, who snared 6/26 from 12 overs, while skipper Stuart Plunkett did a power of work, bowling 33 overs for a return of 1/62.
