An expected impact of the virus crisis is a need for more residential space, as people use homes for more purposes including work. Recent data con rms this impact on the market continues to occur.

According to third quarter 2021 data from the Census Quarterly Starts and Completions by Purpose and Design and NAHB analysis, median single-family square oor area increased to 2,337 square feet. Average (mean)

Single-Family Home Size Continues to Trend Higher

square footage for new single-family homes increased to 2,541.

Since Great Recession lows (and on a one-year moving average basis), the average size of new single-family homes is now 6.2% higher at 2,518 square feet, while the median size is 9.3% higher at 2,296 square feet.

Home size rose from 2009 to 2015 as entry-level new construction was

constrained. Home size declined between 2016 and 2020 as more starter homes were developed. Total revenues grew 49.8% to $129.8 million as compared to the same period last year.

Company-operated shops revenues increased 62.9% to $108.7 million as compared to $66.7 million in the same period last year.

Third Quarter 2021 Highlights: •

Outlook

On September 17, 2021, we successfully closed our initial public offering ("IPO") of 24,210,526 shares of Class A common stock, including the exercise in full of the underwriters’ option to purchase 3,157,894 additional shares, at a price to the public of $23.00 per share. Proceeds from the IPO were approximately $556.8 million, before deducting underwriting discounts and commissions and other offering expenses.

When you have a target demographic in mind, you can create more targeted strategies for engaging potential customers. Therefore, you must identify your product or service’s target audience before you begin marketing efforts for the brand. The group will include existing customers as well as potential customers.

Your target market does not necessarily consist of everyone who may be interested in your products. It’s important to identify the people you want to reach through your brand marketing efforts, whether you’re using digital marketing campaigns or advertisements or on social media channels.

Understanding your target audience and their pain points allows you to create content more effectively and target advertisements with the right marketing message for each segment.

Creating a business plan is a crucial step for developing your home business. It can include every aspect of your business, guiding both its launch and operation. Some key elements of your business plan should include: Company description: provide a summary of what your company does.

Innovation: What’s in it for Me?

The title of this article is to personalize a concept that has been given a lot of attention over the past couple decades.

Innovation typically is de ned on the organizational level, and a cursory web browser search brings up numerous de nitions of what innovation is.

Invariably, the concept of innovation is linked to company culture or operations. If this is not the case for you, then the discussion of innovation is an academic exercise, still worthy of thought and re ection in its own right.

A few ideas spring to mind when I look at innovation and how it is perceived in the regional business community.

‘Innovation’ denotes activity, energy and positive movement; When recognized, innovation typically sparks interest and support from the viewers’ perspective; A company that innovates oftentimes has higher employee buy-in to supporting the company’s mission, vision and values.

When companies adopt innovation as a core strategy and execute it well, a shift takes place in the culture of the company which can have a profound positive effect on the bottom-line pro tability. As business owners, this is one great example of what is in it for you. Increased pro tability, a challenge to achieve in this economy. Adopting an innovative culture pays off in the long run.

The de nition I use for innovation is the rst one I encountered years ago:

Innovation = Invention + Commercialization Just having an idea, product, brand, logo or other speci c ability or asset does not add value to your company if you can’t get it out to the marketplace and bene t your customers and your business. This is the essence of many de nitions of innovation that have been developed over time, an inward object of ‘invention of the new’ coupled with the external delivery and bene t creation element. All the energy, hype, excitement and creativity are wrapped around this simple concept to de ne the organizations’ culture and provide some of the enjoyment that being in business can have for an owner.

As we gain experience with a changed economy as a result of the Pandemic which is closing-in on two-years of existence, what is your stance on innovation? How are you thinking through adopting or creating something new, to keep your goods and services fresh in your customers’ minds? How are you adopting innovative processes and procedures to lighten the labor burden within your organizations, to remain effective while working on lean concepts? How has your Value Proposition changed over the past two years and do your customers and suppliers know about it? If the answer to the last question is ‘no’, then how are you creating new value to sustain your business?

Working on Your Business A critical business assessment to inform you of areas that are weak, and if

strengthened, can create value and wealth for you over time. Having a thirdparty assess your business is a prudent management action to take. Aligning yourself with other business people who innovate can cause synergies to be recognized and add value to your operations. One innovative act creates others, something that becomes easier over time to achieve and bene t from.

Challenging your employees to participate and support group work to create a culture of innovation reaps great rewards, as the largest expense most businesses have are employee-related.

Gaining increased value from your largest expense category can be a gamechanger for most small businesses.

Timing is Key

In Southern Oregon, there are active entrepreneurs who are working on developing a culture of innovation. Once a region is recognized for hosting innovative companies, other energetic individuals and companies are drawn to the area to participate in an innovation economy. This synergistic effect is one other way to build and position your company to nancially bene t from the growth that innovation brings.

In ation-Adjusted Wages Rose in All Oregon Counties Since 2010

Washington and Multnomah counties. These two counties in the Portland metro area are home to more than 1.4 million Oregonians (about one-third of the state’s population) and more than $55 billion in payroll (slightly over 50% of the state’s total). Washington County is home to several highwage industries, including company headquarters and hightech manufacturing. Both of these industries have a disproportionately large presence in the county, and the county has added thousands of jobs over the past 10 years.

A second important reason for the large increase in average wages is the loss of lower-wage jobs during the pandemic recession. The leisure and hospitality industry had an average wage of just $24,329 in 2020 – by far the lowest of any industry. Leisure and hospitality also lost more than 51,000 jobs in 2020. The massive loss of lowwage jobs caused the average wage calculated for the remaining jobs to increase in a possibly misleading way.

Although wages have been increasing for many individual jobs, they probably haven’t increased as much as the averages suggest.

Although wages are increasing in 2021, in ation is increasing more rapidly for many workers. In ation adjusted average wages have started to fall slightly but it’s hard to tell if this will be a long-term trend. All of Oregon’s counties saw an increase in in ationadjusted average wages from 2010 to 2020. Overall, the average wage for the entire state increased by $10,922 over those 10 years after adjusting for in ation. Most of the statewide increase was driven by the large gains in

adjusting for in ation by the Consumer Price Index for urban consumers. The wages are for workers covered by unemployment insurance, which excludes self-employed workers and a few others such as real estate brokers who are paid by commission.

A couple of the top-gaining counties on a per-person basis are located in the Columbia Gorge. Sherman and Morrow counties bene ted from the expansion of construction and new manufacturing businesses and their associated professional jobs.

The counties with less growth in wages are often smaller and rural. Wheeler County had essentially no growth in private-sector employment from 2010 to 2020. Klamath County added jobs overall but lost jobs in manufacturing, nance, and professional and business services. Harney County lost very few of its leisure and hospitality jobs in 2020, thereby maintaining a more representative change in its average wage, but also moving toward the bottom of the rankings.

It remains to be seen how overheated in ation in the 2021 pandemic recovery will affect workers’ real wage growth over time. Employers are recovering more of their lower-wage positions, which could drive average wages down.

However, competition for available workers has also heated up and driven up starting wages.

6 Lessons We Can Learn from Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) was an icon of modern architecture. Over a period of 70 years he built more than 1,000 buildings across the United States, dotting the landscape with his elegant style. He designed organic exteriors of wood and stone as well as interior elements, including stained glass windows, furniture, tableware, and rugs.

1. Life Is Beautiful

Before Wright was born, his mother Anna said that she expected her rst child to grow up to build beautiful buildings, according to Wright’s autobiography. She wasn’t wrong.

Throughout his life, Wright built beautiful houses, museums, hotels, churches, synagogues, civic centers, and other buildings. Wright believed that the point of architecture was to share beauty. He said that, “The mission of an architect is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for

living in, and to give reason, rhyme, and meaning to life.”

He was born on June 8, 1867, in Wisconsin, where he spent most of his childhood, and studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin. After school, Wright moved to Chicago and worked for the rm of Alder & Sullivan. He opened his own successful practice in 1893 and established a studio in his Oak Park, Illinois home in 1898. One of his early commissions was to design a home for Austrian businessman Isidore H. Heller and his family who had recently bought a plot of land in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Wright built the house out of Indiana limestone and Roman brick.

believed that everyone should be able to afford a house. He designed houses for ordinary people through the careful use of standardization and the sourcing of inexpensive materials. During the Great Depression, he realized the need for affordable housing and developed his signature Usonian house design. He coined the term “Usonia” from the term “US” to describe an architectural design for the middle class in the United States.

The houses were constructed of modular concrete blocks and were economical while still looking sophisticated. The building plans were streamlined, with a simplistic approach to the construction, proving that beauty could be affordable.

The Isidore Heller house displays the in uence of Louis Sullivan, Wright’s earlier employer and mentor. Sullivan is famous for his skyscrapers, and, although the Isidore Heller house isn’t a skyscraper, its height, arcaded balconies, and intricate friezes show a Sullivan in uence. Later, Wright would simplify his designs and do away with ornamentation and fanciful elements.

The Heller house represents the beginning of a new aesthetic with its clean, horizontal lines and elegant design.

2. Housing Should Be Affordable When we think of Frank Lloyd Wright these days, we don’t think about affordability, but Wright strongly

Wright built the Dr. Tou c H. Kalil House in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1955 for Dr. Tou c and Mildred Kalil, a professional couple. It is an iconic example of Usonian architecture. Typical of the style, the Kalil house draws its beauty from simple, linear lines rather than ornamental details. Symmetrical rows of rectangular windows provide a lighter complement to the heavy concrete of the walls, and the house ts organically into its wooden site, as was typical of Wright houses.

The 1,380-square-foot house contains a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths, and a study. All of the original furniture, most of which is built-in, is

still intact. In September 2019, the house was put up for sale with an asking price of $850,000. The Currier Museum of Art, also in Manchester, purchased the house and recently opened it for public tours.

3. Craftsmanship Matters Wright was in uenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, an international theory of design that focused on craftsmanship. Wright’s vision shared with the Arts and Crafts movement an embrace of skilled handcrafting as an antidote to the dehumanizing effects of modern mass production. Wright said, “I believe a house is more a home by being a work of art” but he also recognized that homes need to be wellbuilt.

The Arts and Crafts movement in uenced the Prairie School, a group of Chicago architects led by Sullivan and Wright who designed houses to evoke the low, earth-toned landscapes of the North American prairies. Prairie School

The craftsmanship of the Prairie School houses needed to be solid to withstand the harsh winters and hot summers of the American Midwest. The houses had low-pitched roofs and wide overhanging eaves. The exteriors featured long horizontal lines, windows grouped in horizontal bands, and very little ornamentation. The interiors were often more ornate, but still used elegant and simple designs. The Frederick C. Robie House is an iconic example of the Prairie School.

Wright designed the house as well as all of the interiors, windows, lighting, rugs, furniture, and textiles. The house is now on the campus of the University of Chicago in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, but when it was built between 1908 and 1910, the lots around it were mostly vacant. It was designed as a single-family home for the Robie family who wanted to be close to the social life of the university where Mrs. Robie had recently graduated.

4. Architecture Should Be EcoFriendly It would be exaggerating to say that Wright understood eco-friendly design and sustainability in the same way that today’s architects do, but Wright cared deeply about the environment and the importance of using materials wisely.

He worked with natural materials and built his homes to integrate with nature.

He preferred to leave natural materials, such as wood and stone, plain, unpainted, and not plastered over, and he loved to have lots of open spaces in his interiors with many windows to merge the inside and outside. He designed his houses to appear as if they grew from their site, shaped by the landscape and colored by the nearby elds or forests, and as beautiful and functional as nature.

Wright believed buildings should exist in harmony with the humans that use them and with their natural surroundings, a philosophy he called organic architecture. Houses such as his well-known Fallingwater in rural southwestern Pennsylvania blend into their natural surroundings, both drawing inspiration from and contributing to the setting.

architecture rejected the ornate fussiness of English-inspired Victorian styles and sought to de ne a uniquely North American style.

Bear Run tributary of the Youghiogheny River in the Mill Run area of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The house was designed as a weekend home for the family of Liliane Kaufmann and her husband, Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., owner of Kaufmann’s Department Store.

Fallingwater stands as one of Wright’s greatest masterpieces, both for its dramatic presentation and for its integration with its stunning natural surroundings.

5. Celebrate Individuality No two Frank Lloyd Wright houses are the same. Each house has an individual style designed to t the personality of the client who requested the house.

Wright said that there should be as many styles of houses as there are kinds of people, and as many differentiations as there are different individuals. Even his Usonian houses, which used standardized designs, supported many options for clients to customize them.

Wright himself valued his own individualism, sometimes to a fault.

Unlike many architects, he didn’t join the American Institute of Architects, and in fact called the organization “a harbor of refuge for the incompetent” and “a form of re ned gangsterism.” He rarely credited any in uences on his designs, though clearly he was in uenced by his early employer Louis Sullivan.

He also didn’t give his protégés credit for their work. For example, Marion Mahony Grif n, one of the Prairie School architects, drew many renderings of Wright’s houses and was rarely credited, although Wright did praise her rendering of the K. C. DeRhodes House in South Bend, Indiana, according to author Lynn Becker.

Wright believed in individualism and individuality. His belief in individuality carried over into his architecture designs, where every design was unique. This can easily be seen in the house that he designed for the author Arthur Miller and his wife, actress Marilyn Monroe.

6. Finish What You Start Although quite a few of Wright’s designs were never built, more than 1,000 were, and Wright believed that once started, the architect should stick with the work. Wright considered the architect’s job to be more than just the exterior design. The planning for a house isn’t nished until every detail is attended to, whether it’s the windows, furniture, rugs, fabrics, lighting, or tableware. He wrote, “In organic architecture then, it is quite impossible to consider the building as one thing, its furnishings another and its setting and environment still another.”

The Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe House was never built, although the King Kamehameha Golf Course Clubhouse in Waikapu, Maui, Hawaii is based on the design. The marriage between Miller and Monroe, two very different personalities, did not last long enough for the house to be built. It was mainly Monroe who worked with Wright on the design for the Connecticut home, but unfortunately, her ideas were not a good t for her more serious husband.

The design features a dramatic circular living room, covered with a domed ceiling and skylights and surrounded by columns, and a swimming pool that would have been built into the side of a hill with natural stone walls. The design is a case where Wright understood the individuality of one of the clients, but alas not his other client, her husband.

Wright turned the problems he experienced as a younger man into a life of hard work, teaching, and creating art. He and his third wife, Olga Ivanovna, founded the Taliesin Fellowship in Wisconsin, with a winter camp at Taliesin West in Arizona, where they taught architecture and construction.

The classes included lessons in gardening, cooking, music, dance, and philosophy. He instilled a work ethic and artistic aesthetic in his apprentices and made sure they understood that “all ne architectural values are human values, else not valuable.” Wright passed away in 1959 after a long tumultuous life, leaving a legacy of innovation and many lessons about life and art.

Richard J. Bailey, Jr., Ph.D., has been appointed as the next president of Southern Oregon University following an extensive national search and a unanimous vote today by the SOU Board of Trustees. Bailey has served as president of Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) in Espanola since October 2016, following a 24-year career in the U.S. Air Force.

Bailey holds a doctorate in government from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in international affairs from Washington University in St. Louis and a bachelor’s degree in engineering sciences from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

His presidency at SOU will begin Jan. 15.

Under Bailey’s leadership and with a focus on student success, NNMC increased its enrollment by over 20 percent, cut its student loan default rate by more than 50 percent and more than doubled its student graduation rate – all without an increase in tuition rates.

He also brokered an NNMC partnership for the construction of a 1.5 megawatt solar array, which will lower utility costs for the college for the next 30 years. In 2020, Bailey led the creation of the Northern New Mexico College Eagle Corporation (the rst of its kind in the history of the college), allowing the institution to partner with business

entities for the purpose of diversifying the college’s revenue streams.

“Our world has changed over the past two years and I am convinced SOU will be on the leading edge of ushering higher education into its next phase. I look forward to being of service to SOU’s impressive faculty and staff to empower the students and communities we are fortunate to support.”

Prior to his presidency at Northern New Mexico College, Bailey served as associate professor of strategy and security studies at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies at Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He was the school’s rst-ever dean of students.

He served as a military liaison and defense trade analyst at the U.S. State Department after completing his doctorate in 2006. He later served as chief air operations of cer at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Joint Force Command Brunssum, in The Netherlands, where he oversaw air operations efforts for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan. Bailey retired from the Air Force as a colonel and command pilot.

“It became apparent throughout the search and selection process that Dr. Bailey’s innovative and entrepreneurial accomplishments, leadership style, strategy expertise and optimistic vision for what is possible at SOU, can propel the university’s bright future, ” Santos said.

Santos credited the success of the search to hard work by the diverse, 18member search committee and the thoughtful participation of hundreds of people from across campus and the surrounding communities. The presidential search committee included students, faculty, staff, community members, another Oregon university president and SOU trustees.

Bailey will succeed Linda Schott, Ph.D., who is retiring in December and has served as president of SOU since August 2016.

“The board is grateful to Dr. Schott for her dedication to SOU and her presidential leadership, which have helped advance the university,” Santos said.

Several factors have increased the pro tability of the distilling industry in the past year. First, the FET has been permanently reduced for the rst 100,000 gallons of spirits produced keeping the tax liability down for small producers. Secondly, I was able to reduce the quota requirements for maintaining stock in the OLCC warehouse keeping our products available throughout Oregon. Sales increased during the COVID pandemic in liquor stores due to more people enjoying spirits at home. Thirdly the OLCC has increased the compensation in Oregon tasting rooms from 17% to 45% increasing the net pro t on tasting room sales. This will be why I will increase our tasting room number in Oregon if I maintain ownership the next year or two.

I may be interested in a short term partnership with an exit strategy if the terms were ideal and a good working agreement in place.

I have had a number of tire kickers, so I am requiring interested parties to visit the distillery to weed out wasted time. We have sustained increasing sales each year since we started in 2013. Current gross sales are just under $300,000.00 annually. This is a very small operation, the last year I have done all distillery operations myself. It wouldn’t take much to double sales and distribution, I am not going to be the one to do it. I am getting older and my body is telling me to change careers. I enjoyed starting the distillery, but I am a tinkerer not a production and sales guy. It is time for it to change hands and reach its true potential.

We have twenty products currently on the market. I have several more in development to be released soon: Gin, Absinthe, Brandy (aging), and a few more rums.

The distillery will have to be moved. When it has to be moved can be discussed and planned. We can stage the buyout over a short period, as long as I have a clear exit

strategy. We can negotiate for my assistance to learn the process. As I said, the price is based on the assets of the business.

The new owner will have to go through the TTB licensing process. This federal process is most thorough. The new owner will have to provide documentation showing where the money came from for the purchase and initial operation, showing that it is all legitimately acquired funds.

Southern Oregon University and the Klamath Tribes agreed this week to formalize their joint commitment to educational opportunities and access for members of the Klamath and other Native American tribes, and to offer programs that enable all students to appreciate the cultural and economic contributions of Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes.

Leadership teams from SOU and the Klamath Tribes met virtually for a ceremonial signing of a memorandum of understanding that links the two entities, and recognizes their mutual educational interests. SOU President Linda Schott and Don Gentry, chair of the Klamath Tribal Council, thanked each other and members of their organizations for identifying overlapping interests and outlining responsibilities.

The memorandum recognizes that “both entities share a common purpose of helping people better themselves through education, research, economic development and other forms of personal growth, and work diligently to

make their respective communities prosperous with multiple opportunities for their students and citizens.”

SOU agreed to match as many as ve educational scholarships from the Klamath Tribes for its tribal members, each worth as much as $3,600 per academic year.

“This will help increase local student attendance at SOU and help prepare the future cadre of professional, careerfocused individuals for the continued development of Klamath County, the Klamath Tribes and the local community,” the MOU said.

It calls upon both the university and the Klamath Tribes to work with Native American students to meet their academic, nancial, cultural and personal needs, and lays out some speci c measures to increase the representation of Indigenous cultures. For instance, SOU will continue to provide course content on the history and contributions of the Klamath Tribes, through the Native American Studies class, “The Nine Tribes of Oregon.” The Klamath Tribes will invite

participants in the class to visit Chiloquin to engage with tribal leaders, program staff and experts in culture and language.

The university will also recruit more Klamath students to Konaway Nika Tillicum, its eight-day residential program held each summer for Native American youth. SOU will work with the Klamath Tribes to plan and carry out an annual Native American student recruitment day and will continue to support programs such as its Native American Student Union.

President Schott, who is retiring at the end of the year, told Gentry that she will send him a blanket to commemorate the memorandum of understanding. Gentry in turn said he will send gifts to Schott on behalf of the tribe.

Both pointed out that incoming SOU President Rick Bailey has a strong record of collaboration with Native American tribes in New Mexico, and is expected to continue to work for close relationships with Oregon’s tribes.

Reset for 2022

Time for a reset and the full expectation of good times ahead! Happy Holidays to everyone. I have good feelings about next year.

Do something in your rst waking hour of the year that will set the standard for how the next 364 days will go. Consider how many things you can do in one hour that can make a difference in some positive way; if you can’t think of 100 things, you’re just not trying. Start right now.

Write a list of 100 things you could do in one hour. *go for a walk, exercise, eat a healthy breakfast, call someone dear to you (or text/email) and set a rm date for a pleasant visit – make a commitment that you really will keep, send a happy new year message to 10 friends, 10 relatives (include your signi cant other), and 10 business people you know*.

It's time to make December the month to prepare for a great beginning to the New Year. Wasn’t 2021 a real kick? We could do with a lot less of much of what we experienced this past year. Enough of that worn out discussion.

January 1st is “Kick Start Day”, not a day of recovery.

Our goals for 2022 shall be lled with optimism, peace, and progress toward better experiences. With a month to plan for a terri c new year its best if on Day One, yes, January 1st, we have a rm commitment to launch into a great year like we mean it.

Waking up on the morning of January 1st with a hangover is a terrible way to start the new year. Don’t do that.

See how easy setting positive activities in motion is? When you nish this rst hour of the year you will be pleased with how much better you feel than you would have it you woke up with a hangover from over-zealous activities the night before. Much better.

In retrospect we’ve all got it in us to accomplish much more than we usually do. I have 168 hours in my week – every week. So do you. Let’s decide to measure the value of the hours based on the possibilities of doing a positive thing each of those hours. Yes, sleeping is a positive thing, as long as we don’t over do it. Consider instead that rst hour of the rst day of the year. Every hour can be equally as satisfying.

A cheerful attitude is good fuel for nearly everything. Make sure to keep that tank full as it will be your source of much needed positive energy. I wish you the happiest year you can imagine.
