Getting Your Outdoor Spaces Ready for Winter For homeowners, fall is the time to start getting ready for what winter will bring. The patio furniture, garden hoses and outdoor entertaining spaces that get plenty of use during the summer need a little attention before the first snow arrives. Our Minnesota winters can be tough on outdoor property. Snow, ice, freezing temperatures, strong winds and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause damage if outdoor areas and equipment aren't properly prepared. Taking care of a few things now can help protect your property and make spring cleanup much easier.
Disconnect and drain outdoor water lines. Before freezing temperatures arrive, shut off the water supply to exterior faucets and drain the lines. Don't forget garden hoses and other watering equipment. Any water left in pipes can freeze, expand and potentially cause costly damage. Protect your gardens and landscaping. Once you've cleaned up leaves and garden debris, add a layer of mulch around appropriate plants and garden beds. Mulch can help protect plant roots from Minnesota's freezing temperatures and repeated freezethaw cycles.
Put away or cover patio furniture. If you have room, store outdoor furniture in a garage, shed or other protected area. If that's not possible, use weather-resistant covers and make sure furniture is secured against strong winds.
Clean your gutters. Fallen leaves are a familiar part of fall. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear before winter weather arrives so melting snow and ice can drain properly. Clogged gutters can contribute to ice dams and water damage.
Clean before storing. Give patio furniture, cushions, grills and other outdoor items a thorough cleaning before putting them away for the season. Dirt and moisture left on items can lead to stains, mold, rust and other damage while they're stored.
Check sidewalks and driveways. Look over concrete walkways, steps and driveways for cracks or areas that need repair. Water that gets into cracks can freeze and expand, making the damage worse. Addressing problems before winter can help prevent
Prepare pools and spas. If you have a pool or spa, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for winterizing it. Drain water from pipes and tubing as directed to prevent freezing and damage, and properly protect pumps, filters and other equipment. A quality cover can also help keep leaves and debris out during the winter months. Don't forget the little things. Fall is also a good time to put away garden tools, hoses, decorations and other items that could be damaged by snow and ice. Secure anything that will remain outdoors so it doesn't become a problem during strong winter winds. A little preparation now can go a long way toward protecting your home and outdoor spaces through another Minnesota winter. Taking care of these projects while the weather is still cooperative can also help you avoid trying to tackle them when temperatures drop and snow is already on the ground.
