Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus Editor’s note: Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.
Dear editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? skeptical age. They do not believe except (what) they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He

exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Holiday greeters The annual Christmas Card Town Parade features numerous entries and last year was no different. From the top: Dreams Studio brought many of its students out for the parade with some on the float while others walk alongside. The Rustic Road Riders rumble through Elkhorn decked out in holiday hats and scarves, one of them even gave a stuffed Olaf from the movie “Frozen” a lift. Elkhorn’s 2020 Christmas card revealed Holiday season included annual tree lighting and parade, plus new event

A few weeks ago, Tim Carson entered the Elkhorn Chamber office, and with a shrug and a smile, he unveiled the 2020 Christmas Card Town’s newest addition. Titled, “He’s Making a List and Checking it Twice,” Carson had a vision of Santa sitting quietly under a street light while he jotted down the names of the Elkhorn children as they fell into the categories of Naughty vs. Nice. With the same steady hand Carson used to paint each brush stroke, he gently removed each staple from the print as he carefully separated the artwork from the mounting upon which the newest Christmas card was created. This

will be the ninth year Carson has been commissioned by the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce to capture the sentiment of the holiday season here in Elkhorn. For area Christmas Card Town enthusiasts or first-time buyers, 10 packs and individual cards of the 2020 Christmas Card are available for purchase at the Elkhorn Chamber, 203 E. Walworth St. Elkhorn. In addition to highlighting the newest Christmas Card design, the Elkhorn Chamber has 20-plus years of Christmas Card inventory on display. Shoppers are invited to assemble their own variety packs and create unique holiday gifts for Elkhorn natives and distant recipients alike. While Santa prepares for his upcoming Christmas Eve deliveries, the Elkhorn Chamber personally invited him to participate in the 39th Annual Tree Lighting, which was held in downtown Elkhorn on Friday, Dec. 4. Santa and a special community helper were set to arrive by horse drawn carriage and help ignite the holiday spirit with the lighting of Elkhorn’s downtown Christmas tree. Santa then joined members of the greater community at the inaugural Let It Glow event, which was held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. Let It Glow is a 1/2-mile drivethru festival of lights and displays with a final stop at Santa’s North Pole Express. Children of all ages were able to see Santa, wave hello and have their wish lists hand delivered by Santa’s illuminated elves. The festivities spilled over to Saturday, Dec. 5, where people gathered downtown for the 39th Annual Christmas Card Town Parade. The parade commenced at 1:30 p.m., leaving from the Walworth County Fairgrounds. With over 10 city blocks included in the parade route, there will be plenty of street space for community members and guests to social distance and enjoy the passing entertainment. While so many things have changed over the course of 2020, the Elkhorn Chamber is proud to honor local holiday traditions in a safe and respectable manner. Thank you to all of the volunteers and community supporters for continued participation and encouragement. We know now more than ever, the best way to do anything is together! A little ways up the street, the Ice Age Trail Alliance float featured a special guest; a giant woolly mammoth riding on an ATV while showing off its Christmas hat.
