P u b l i c A r t P r o j e c t

The Whitewater Arts Alliance promotes the visual and performing arts through an alliance of artists, individuals, educational resources, and organizations to promote creativity and diversity in the community.

The Public Art Project is one shining example of the Alliance partnering with local artists and art enthusiasts to create pieces based on a yearly theme. In the past, professional and amateur artists, public school students, community

members, and local businesses have created pieces. They're displayed on the lampposts throughout downtown, offering optimal visibility by the public. Past projects featured bikes, lanterns, cubes, as well as

wooden book pages to honor the written word. The Whitewater Arts Alliance has offered the Public Art Project for 19 years. Most years, they auction off the pieces as a fundraiser for programming at The Cultural Arts Center.

However, the individual schools in the district were a mixed bag of results, with one school exceeding expectations, three meeting expectations and one meeting few expectations. Whitewater Superintendent Caroline Pate-Hefty was not available to comment. Elementary Schools Overall, the best scores for the district came out of the elementary schools, with Washington Elementary scoring 80.3 to exceed expectations. Lakeview Elementary had a 67 score, while Lincoln Elementary had a 58.2 score – both meeting expectations.Washington Elementary scored above the state average on achievement (69.6), plus added an 81.2 growth score that saw a score well above the state average for both English and math. Lakeview, meanwhile, had the highest district achievement score at 70.7, but growth was just a 48.9 out of a possible 100. The school had an 85.9 on-track to graduation score. Lincoln had just a 49.7 score for achievement and a 48.9 score in growth, but had a 52.3 in target group outcomes and an 82.4 on-track to graduation. Neither Washington nor Lakeview had target group outcomes data to show. Middle School Whitewater Middle School had one of the lower ratings in the county, scoring 54.3 out of a possible 100, meeting few expectations. The school posted a 50.1 achievement score, with a 54.2 on English and 46 on math, compared to 60.1 and 53.6, respectively, statewide. On growth, the middle school had a 45.1 score, while target group outcomes was a 41.9. On-track to graduation scored 81.2 out of a possible 100. High school Whitewater Area High School met expectations with 64.8 score, falling in the middle of the pack for the county. The school’s achievement score came in at 49.4, but its growth score was 66, with a 75.5 growth score in math compared to 66 statewide. The school had a 60.8 target group outcomes score, and an 88 score out of 100 for on-track to graduation. According to the numbers, 94.7% of high school students graduated. Walworth County schools pass report card test Most districts fall into meet expectations, with each registering strong individual schools By Jennifer Eisenbart EDITOR As the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released its school report cards in the past two weeks, Walworth County schools passed the test. The majority of the schools in the county either met or exceeded expectations, with a handful of schools hitting the “significantly exceeds expectations” criteria or just missing it. On the other side of the equation, few schools ranked as “meets few expectations” or “fails to meet expectations.” Overall, 84% of Wisconsin schools met or exceeded expectations, down from 87% a ago. The report card process began in 2011-12 to give a state an indicator of how schools were progressing and an accountability tool, according the state DPI site. The index approach uses multiple measures and classifies schools along a rating continuum. Criteria There were 2,104 report cards produced for public schools for 2021-22. Among public schools, 184 (9%) were unable be scored and are rated using alternate accountability. Of the 1,920 scored school report cards, 1,619 met, exceeded, or significantly exceeded expectations (84%). Of the 1,883 schools with scored report cards in both 2021-22 and 2020-21, a total of 1,226 experienced no change from 2020-21, 231 moved up at least one rating category, and 426 moved down at least one category. The ratings determine the level of support a school receives, ranging from rewards and recognition for high performing schools to state intervention for the lowest performing schools in the state. See SCHOOLS PASS Page 3 Board approves purchase to replace outdated tech By Dave Fidlin CORRESPONDENT The Whitewater Unified School District is planning to use some of its allocated COVID-19 relief funding from federal officials to replace outdated wireless technology.Director of Technology John Houwers went before the School Board on Nov. 28 and received the go-ahead to enter into a $157,996 contract with Ruckus Networks, technology firm that provides such services as wireless access points. WWUSD’s current infrastructure setup of wireless access points is on the cusp of obsolescence, Houwers said, which could pose problems in the road ahead if funds are not directed toward the issue. Houwers said he first learned of the urgent need of addressing the existing wireless access points this past summer, when he attempted to renew service agreement for the current infrastructure, but only was able to do so through this fall. The current system has not been sold since July of 2020. As time goes by, Houwers said it will grow increasingly difficult to have it serviced. “The end of service date coming up,” Houwers said. “That basically is the last day anything will be serviced by the company at all with these access points.” As is the case with many large venues, WWUSD has in place a number of wireless access points throughout its various schools that enable users connect to the Internet WiFi. WWUSD currently has in place total of 208 indoor access points and 14 outdoor access points. Based on conversations has had, Houwers said there would still be a nominal amount of support offered if the district would maintain a status-quo approach. But critical technical issues, including “patching” — would come to an end in short order. In the world of software, patching refers to a fix or repair job for a piece of programming that is designed to resolve functional deficiencies.
