Fishing is one of the most popular recreational pursuits in North America. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says around 40 million people fish each year. Fishing can be an ideal way to spend time in the great outdoors, and people often bond with family and friends while fishing.

As any angler can attest, there’s a rush that comes from getting a small tug on the line and then reeling in a fish. At this point, fishermen must decide if the fish is a keeper or should be tossed back into the water.

Sometimes the answer is very clear.

Rivers and lakes across the world are managed by various organizations that serve to protect wildlife and natural resources. Rules may be in place regarding

the sizes of fish that can be kept, which species are safe and which are protected, and even when people can fish.

In a study led by researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey that was published in the journal Fisheries, thousands of distinct populations of fish were studied.

Researchers determined that as many as four out of 10 freshwater species in North America are in danger of approaching extinction. As a result, fishing is regulated

by Fish and Wildlife officers and game wardens.

Those who are new to fishing or to a particular region must learn and follow the rules regarding fishing. Fishing licenses are typically required to fish in a given state or area. Always speak with a licensing

agency about size restrictions and any other rules regarding species of fish. Also learn about which methods of fishing are legal. Drag nets or other methods of mass fish collection or luring the fish with lights or other equipment may be prohibited.

Learning how to safely catch and release fish if the need arises also is an essential component of responsible fishing.

When done correctly, catch-and-release methods can ensure high survival rates and preserve native fish populations. The National Park Service advises those who fish to follow these tips: • Avoid fishing when conditions are stressful for fish, such as when water temperatures are high; • Use equipment that enables one to

land the fish quickly without struggle; • Avoid the use of scents and artificial baits that encourage fish to swallow hooks.

Learn which bait are prohibited in certain bodies of water. Artificial lures that hook the fish in the lip are preferred; • Avoid playing with the fish to exhaustion; and • Keep the fish wet and calm, and treat it gently to remove the hook. Hold the fish underwater and allow it to ventilate before release so it can regain its swimming strength.

Extend the life of your outboard engine with these storage tips As summer winds down, every boat owner clings to those last few warm days to take his or her boat out on the water with family and friends. Unfortunately, summer doesn’t last forever and as the sun sets on another boat season, it is time to start thinking about how to store your boat and outboard engine for those off-season months.

Proper off-season storage protects critical internal components from corrosive gummy deposits from unbound ethanol, which can damage your engine, fuel tanks and fuel system components. Proper winterization also helps to protect against the freezing of critical engine components. If left untreated, damage from corrosion, broken parts, and general repairs could cost you thousands of dollars as well as time on the water.

So, as you prepare for off-season storage, follow these easy winterization steps to ensure your outboard engine is in tip-top shape for next season: Flush out the engine with fresh water.

Doing so will flush out excess salt, dirt, sand, and other contaminants, and prevent blockage and corrosion of critical cooling system components.

Add fuel stabilizers. Pour quality fuel stabilizers into the gas tank to prevent the breakdown of ethanol and other deposits from ruining your engine. Be sure to run the engine after adding the stabilizer to the fuel tank to ensure that it reaches fuel system components in the engine.

Keep the fuel tank full. Storing your boat with a full tank of fuel, particularly if ethanol fuel is used, will help

minimize condensation that may occur within the fuel tank.

Fog the engine cylinders and carburetor intakes to help slow corrosion. The use of spray fogging oil will help protect internal engine components from corrosion. Spray fogging oil into the air intake while the engine runs, then disconnect the fuel line. Continue to spray into the air intake until the engine dies. Evinrude E-TEC engine’s autowinterization feature streamlines steps one and four by flushing out the engine and fogging itself for a few minutes. After the engine has completed fogging, it will shut off and your engine will be ready for storage.

Change the oil in four-stroke engines.

Changing the oil will remove moisture and harmful acids that have collected within the oil. These acids and contaminates could cause corrosion of internal engine components.

Drain and replace gear case lubricant.

Milky colored gear lubricant is a sign that water has entered the gear case. If left unchecked, the water within the gear case can freeze, causing the gear case to permanently fail.

Ensure that the battery is fully charged and disengaged. A fully charged battery is less susceptible to damage during cold storage. A fully charged battery’s freezing point is around minus 95 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas a partially charged battery could freeze in temperatures as high as 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

thanol, a corn-based fuel that is mixed with traditional gasoline, has been a boon to the fuel industry. It helps to keep costs down and provides a renewable, more eco-friendly option to fuel cars and trucks.

While ethanol may perform fine in automobile engines, boat engines may not be so lucky, and some engine manufacturers have expressed concern over the use of ethanol in boat engines.

Gasoline that contains 10 percent

ethanol, commonly referred to as E10, is not recommended for outboard motors, particularly older engines. The only way to avoid ethanol is to purchase marine-grade fuel that has none of it. This fuel costs more, but many boaters prefer it because of the risks for costly engine repairs when ethanol is used.

Unlike car engines that burn through a tank of gas quickly and are used frequently, outboard boat motors are often left to sit until the boat is used again. When ethanol fuel is allowed to sit, the corn alcohol

Ethanol could damage outboard motors

can separate from the gasoline and settle at the bottom of the fuel tank.

Ethanol is also hygroscopic. This means it absorbs water. In high moisture conditions such as those on a boat, this can further exacerbate the separation of ethanol and gasoline.

The result is a sludge that forms in the fuel tank. Most outboard engines have their fuel outlet at the bottom of the tank. After being left to sit, the engine will draw in pure ethanol and water that has accumulated, which can muck up the engine and corrode internal parts.

Ethanol also is a strong solvent, and it can dissolve substances in the engine, potentially clogging fuel ports.

Many boat owners have noticed clogged carburetors due to ethanol fuels. Boat service centers have mentioned an increase of engines needing

cleaning from oxygenated fuels like ethanol.

Buildup in the engine can restrict gas flow and cause the engine to overheat – precipitating a breakdown.

Although many manufacturers and repair shops recommend avoiding ethanol fuel for boats, if they cannot be avoided it is best to heed these tips: • buy as little as possible – just enough to fuel the trip so leftover fuel will not remain sitting in the tank; • drain the carburetor on the engine after using ethanol; and

• use a fuel stabilizer that will help prevent separation.

Ethanol is not recommended for all engines, and it may cause costly engine problems on outboard motors when the fuel is allowed to sit in the tank for extended periods of time.

Many local hikers know one of the best places for a scenic hike in the area is the Ice Age Trail.

Designated as a State Scenic Trail it is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails, Ice Age is considered one of the premier hiking trail and conservation resource for silent sport and outdoor enthusiasts, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

“The trail traverses some of Wisconsin’s most scenic landscapes and helps tell the story of the last Ice Age by highlighting Wisconsin’s unique glacial features,” the DNR websites states.

The Ice Age Trail winds through 30 counties on state, federal, country and private lands and connects dozens of communities according to the DNR. More than 600 miles of the trail are open for hiking, thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who have worked on cleaning and improving the trail for decades.

Andrew Whitney, coordinator of the Walworth/Jefferson chapter of the Ice Age Trail, said work on the trails continues all year long.

“We have work days once a month,” he said. “But recently it was a special work day because Heidi (Schulz) happened to get a grant.”

Members of the Walworth-Jefferson County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance met up on June 22 for a trail work day on the Clover Valley segment of the Ice Age Trail. This mile and a half section of trail is located mostly in Walworth County, with the very end of it reaching to the Rock County border.

Fourteen people showed up on warm morning to work on a part of the trail that will eventually be a DCA (Dispersed Camping Area) along the Ice Age Trail.

Brush, vines, logs and stumps had to be removed and much time was spend raking out the remaining underbrush, Schulz, a trail volunteer, said.

“The project was backed by a Thrivent Action Team grant and everyone was treated to lunch after a long morning of work,” Schulz said.

The grant was also used to print maps that are located at trailheads throughout Walworth and Jefferson Counties “We wanted to make a campsite because there’s a very long distance between the campgrounds in Dane County and the Whitewater Lake campgrounds, so one of our maintenance leaders wanted us to make a campsite at the Clover Vally site, so that what we did,” Whitney said.

The Walworth/Jefferson Chapter volunteers spend many hours clearing and maintaining the trail, along with volunteers from other chapters of the Ice Age Trail, Whitney said.

“The campground was a bit unique,” he said. “Usually it’s more maintenance type things, clearing brush, cutting fallen trees, that type of thing.”

Whitney said they often work with local schools on service learning projects.

“We just did a work day with some middle school kids and they really enjoyed it,” he said. “We do a lot with the Scouts too.”

“Especially with all the storms lately, we have a lot of trees down on the trail this year, so we’re doing a lot of that each time out,” he said.

Walk the trail

The Walworth/Jefferson Chapter of the Ice Age Trail meets every Wednesday morning to hike the trail.

“Whitewater is a trail community and one of the best things about this chapter is we hike every single Wednesday,” Whitney said. “We meet at the parking lot at 10:15 (a.m.) and leave at 10:30 to hike.

“We can have 40 people show up and we have two groups, short distance hikers and long distance hikers, It’s a great way to meet people, It was a beautiful hike today, I led the long hike and we did 7 miles; the short distance hikers usually goes 3 or 4 miles.”

Whitney said the group has been doing the weekly walks since 2001 and can have up to 40 walkers on any given week.

“I have new hikers all the time and they tell me they’ve been thinking about it for a long time and they just showed up, and that’s all you have to do for this is show up and go hiking,” he said.

And dress for the weather, because the hikes go on, rain or shine, hot or cold, dry or wet.

“It doesn’t matter, it can be 20 degrees or 80 and we’re out there in all kinds of weather,” Whitney said.

History of the Ice Age Trail The stories of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and Ice Age Trail Alliance are a mix of vision, conservation, and passion, involving both famous Wisconsin politicians and thousands of private citizens.

During the 1920s, extreme flooding of the Milwaukee River, coupled with increased recreation needs of the growing city of Milwaukee, focused attention on the Kettle Moraine, a scenic belt of glacial ridges in southeastern Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Chapter of the Izaak Walton League purchased 800 acres around Moon Lake (now Mauthe Lake) in the Northern Kettle Moraine in 1926. Ten years later, the Kettle Moraine State Forest was established and volunteers began constructing its first hiking trails.

Among the leading proponents for the protection of the Kettle Moraine was Raymond Zillmer, a lawyer by profession and an avid walker, mountaineer and student of natural history.

He explored the wildlands of northern Minnesota, mountaineered in remote areas of the Canadian Rockies (Mt. Zillmer in the Cariboo Range was named in his honor) and followed the development of the Appalachian Trail. Zillmer was twice responsible for personally

convincing two governors to increase land acquisition funding for the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

In the 1950s, Zillmer envisioned the Kettle Moraine State Forest forming the nucleus for a much larger linear park that would be used “by millions more people than use the more remote national parks.”

He pictured extending the Kettle Moraine Glacial Hiking Trail along the terminal moraine of the most recent continental glaciation for several hundred miles.

He was certain the concept warranted national attention.

In 1958, Zillmer founded the Ice Age Park & Trail Foundation (now the Ice Age Trail Alliance) to begin efforts to establish a national park in Wisconsin that would encompass this route. That same year, he wrote a letter to Daniel Tobin, Regional Director of the National Park Service.

Zillmer wrote, “I am intimately familiar with the moraines…of the existing Kettle Moraine State Forest, having covered almost literally every foot of the area many times in the last 40 years … I found that my work in the Kettle Moraine Forest project was of unestimatable value. In fact, I believe it is impossible to understand the (proposed national park) without a complete knowledge of what the state has accomplished. It has established the practicality of a long narrow strip as far as outdoor recreation is concerned.”

His efforts paid off. Later that year, Tobin accompanied Zillmer for several days of inspection along the proposed route. Zillmer was capturing the interest of the National Park Service, conservationists and political leaders. Bills were introduced in Congress to create an Ice Age National Park in Wisconsin.

Yet just as creation of this new type of national park was gaining momentum, Zillmer died. The vision of the Ice Age project being a linear park and trail, similar to today’s Appalachian Trail, almost passed with him.

Later in 1961, the National Park Service concluded that, while many of the unique glacial features of Wisconsin warranted national attention, a park hundreds of miles in length would be too difficult to administer.

Grassroots supporters, State of Wisconsin officials, and NPS staff went back to the drawing board. What they came up with was the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, an affiliated area of the National Park System composed of nine separate units around Wisconsin. In 1964, thanks to the efforts of Congressman Henry Reuss, the Ice Age Reserve legislation was passed

by Congress and signed by President Johnson.

In the early 1970s, the Ice Age Trail Council was formed to carry out Zillmer’s vision for a long-distance hiking trail. Older trails on public lands, such as the Glacial Hiking Trail in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, became building blocks for the Ice Age Trail.

Volunteers constructed new trail segments along much of the remaining route. Many of these new segments were built on private land after volunteers received handshake agreements with the landowners.

The Ice Age Trail Council merged with the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation in 1990, which then changed its name to Ice Age Trail Alliance in 2009.

Following the trail’s first successful through-hiker, and under the sponsorship of Congressman Henry Reuss, the Ice Age Trail finally joined the National Trails System. On Oct. 3, 1980, President Carter signed the law establishing the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Hundreds of volunteers contribute tens of thousands of hours every year to the Ice Age Trail. Their efforts have spanned decades. Their legacy is forever.

Rosa’s Pizza is back in business after suffering a fire more than 18 months ago.

The Whitewater favorite reopened its doors and has received an outpouring response from the Whitewater community.

“It was awesome as soon as we opened the door, the community was excited for us to be back open and we were excited to be back open,” Rosa’s owner Sean Stemper said of the long-awaited news. “All week people have been saying how happy they are that we are reopened, how the place looks and how the food tastes great, just how it used to be. It makes you feel great that all the work you put in the last year

and a half was worth it.”

Stemper added that it has been a learning experience for him and his patrons because he has a whole new staff.

“We’re training everybody as well,” Stemper said recently. “Just the patience with everybody coming in and wanting their food and ice cream. It gave us a chance to work out any kinks of reopening, and giving us patience was awesome.”

Stemper said that the plan from the beginning was to reopen the January after the October 2017 fire.

“When I went around town for the last year and a half, people would always ask when we were opening,” Stemper said.

“For the longest time, the answer was that yes in terms of reopening, and ‘I don’t know’ when it came to when.

“It was hard because we had to completely deconstruct the building down to studs and wiring,” he added. “Everything you could think of, including ovens and coolers, had to go,” Stemper said.

He said that co-owner Andrew Marzahl spearheaded the effort to get the business going again. Stemper added that he helped as much as he could but was helping raise a young child.

“Andy really took over all the little things of restarting a business with the tediousness of paperwork, contacting different people and setting up the kitchen with drawing it out on different spreadsheets or computer apps to see what it would look like,” Stemper said. “That

included changing where our ovens were or anything that could make it flow better to designing the dining area as we designed a lot of the tables.”

He said the building went through a change of ownership because the previous landlord didn’t have the time and resources to help rebuild.

“Greg Aprahamian’s family bought the building, and he and his kids took over redoing it,” Stemper said. “They did a lot of it themselves, which is part of the reason it took so long. They had to do what was cost-effective for them, and we (Stemper and Marzahl) were down here as much as we could.”

In an effort to help Rosa’s rebuild, a group of University of WisconsinWhitewater football players, including Auggie Hengel, Brad Krisch, Nick Koenig, Gabe Rasmussen, and Bryan Behrendt, helped raise about $2,700 to help with the finances.

“We loved Rosas’s our whole college career,” Hengel said. “When it had a terrible fire, we felt really bad. In one night, we raised over $2,000, so that was really exciting.”

Hengel said it is good to have it back for their last year at UW-Whitewater.

“We really missed it,” he said. “Good food, good quality of people who work here that want to treat you right. It is good to have it back.”

Stemper said it was awesome for members of the community to support

them throughout the process and that they came down to see the progress during construction.

“It was emotionally awe-some … you hope when a tragedy happens that your community will stick by you,” he said. “I didn’t even know who they were when that popped up. I sent them a message through the Go-FundMe. I found out that they were football players here, and they just wanted to help.”

Rosa’s menu has, for the most part, stayed the same with a few additions and subtractions. The additions include cheese curds, beer and ice cream sandwiches.

“For the most part the menu is similar; if it is not broke don’t fix it,” Stemper said. “The beef sandwiches sell good, and people love them.”

With the new competition with the Pizza by the Slice store on the same street, Stemper says that he wants all downtown businesses to do well.

“There are a lot of pizza places in this town, and they all compete for pizza and food sales,” Stemper said. “I think if you ask most of them that they’ll all say that they want each other’s business to do well.”

Stemper said that the new offerings and new dining room would bring in a lot more families than before.

“We treat people well and give them food at a good price,” Stemper said. “We’re pretty confident that we will stay pretty steady.”

“And third, we need to do strategic planning,” she said of the long-term outlook.

“We’ll start undertaking that in the fall. We’ll get together with our boards and determine who we are and who we should be in setting our agenda and mission.”

One of the many components involved is networking with other chambers and tourism groups.

“We have to be more proactive in how we look at working with our members, the community and the world,” she said. “And we’re not alone in that … there’s Lake Geneva, Elkhorn, Fort Atkinson and many others and they all handle things a little differently. But there is a lot of overlap in opportunities, many which can be mutually beneficial.
