No matter how much of a rush you are in to hit the road this summer, don’t take any shortcuts when it comes to towing safely.

A pre-roadtrip checklist to avoid towing trauma

T

he onset of warmer weather means taking to the outdoors, be it boating, camping or simply tackling big jobs in the backyard.

The result is a heavy increase in traffic on the roads – and often tagging along with the extra vehicles are the trailers, boats and campers that can put motorists at risk.

In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 20,000 people require medical attention every year as a result of crashes involving trailers towed by passenger vehicles.

These recreational outings don’t need to go sideways – nor does whatever you may be towing. Here’s a safety checklist to ensure you are towing the right way:

Get hitched A starting point to towing is knowing the pulling capacity of your vehicle, as too much weight

can cause a load of problems, no matter how much power your engine has.

When it comes to connecting a trailer to the towing vehicle, a critical component, of course, is the coupler – the part of the hitch system that is attached to the trailer. The coupler needs to be secured, tight and locked.

On the towing vehicle, avoid using a ball mount and hitch that is rusted, cracked, corroded or poorly designed – anything that can compromise its integrity.

A safe answer is applying a new hitch, like the Ultra-Tow Complete Tow Kit, which is a durable and easy solution to pull whatever you’re towing.

Bottom line Always reference the “coupling to tow vehicle” section of your vehicle manual to make sure it is done right.

Feel the (tire) pressure An often forgotten element

on the trailer towing checklist is making sure the trailer’s tire pressure is at the right level. In addition, inspect tires for wear or trauma – and be sure to have a spare.

Be a chain agent Once you place and pop in the coupler over the ball mount, the next step is applying the safety chains, which need to be rigged to the tow vehicle. Avoid the common mistake of rigging the safety chains to the hitch or ball mount itself. Safety chains are federal law and will keep the trailer from drifting in the event the trailer coupling separates from the ball mount.

Light it up No matter what you’re driving, communicating with other vehicles is paramount to safety – and that means having properly working brake, tail and turn signal lights. Before departing, sync up the trailer

lights with the tow vehicle and test it out so that other motorists will know your actions.

Once everything is hitched, it’s time to load up the cargo.

It’s best to be balanced with weight distribution, but put heavier cargo in the front of the trailer. And of course, do not overload.

This pre-departure checklist is only a start. Once on the road, remember the basic safe driving practices when towing a trailer: Drive at moderate speeds, avoid sudden stops, don’t use cruise control and allow more distance for stopping.

boat maintenance You bought a boat. Now how do you maintain it? Just keep the following three points in mind, and the first year with a new boat should be smooth sailing.

First off, engines, steering equipment, water pumps and anything else aboard that moves will benefit from use. Turn everything on and use it at least a couple of times a season. Raise and lower your anchor at the dock, for instance, if you never anchor out.

Turn on a seldom-used air conditioner for at least 10 minutes every week or two. Let your circuit-breaker panel and the switches at the helm be your guide to be sure you don’t miss anything. This also ensures that everything is in working order if you ever need it.

Next, keep it clean. This isn’t just aesthetic. If the engine space is clean, you’ll see an engine-coolant or steering-fluid leak right away, so you can have it taken care of before it gets worse. Debris in the waterways around deck hatches can clog drains. Then when it rains, if the water can’t drain, it finds its way into that hatch, and sometimes onto equipment that shouldn’t get wet.

When you notice a bit of metal looking rusty or dull, take five minutes to polish it with wax that protects stainless steel and aluminum and cleans minor corrosion before it permanently etches into the finish. That time pays off at the dock, when your boat sparkles brighter than your neighbors’.

And finally, the adage a stitch in time saves nine holds particularly true on boats. If you notice fluid leaking or salt deposits forming anywhere in the engine space, for instance, take care of those small things when you see them to avoid a bigger job to work on later.

Use more than your eyes too. As you spend time aboard your boat, you’ll learn what noises and vibrations are normal. Pay attention when anything seems different, since that is often the first indicator of something amiss.

Beyond that general advice, here’s a quick list of maintenance items you’ll need to address during your first year:

boat soap – one that won’t remove wax.

Southern latitudes and saltwater boating require wax as often as every two months from the main deck up. Northern and freshwater boaters might wax only once a season.

You’ll know it’s time when grime becomes harder to wash off the boat. Between wax jobs, use a cleaner wax that scours the dirt, but also leaves behind a protective wax coating, to quickly touch up trouble spots.

Canvas and upholstery Polyester or acrylic fabric covers and sunshades need just a good freshwater rinse, plus an occasional light scrub with Woolite or natural-soap flakes. Once or twice a season, rejuvenate stain and water repellency with fabric sealer.

Use only manufacturer-approved cleaners on window-like clear panels. Wash cushions with mild boat soap to remove sunscreen, food crumbs and dirt, and deep-clean and protect the fabric as needed with vinyl cleaner and protectant. Store cushions on their edge when you’re not using the boat so they dry inside and out.

Interior

Engines In cold climates, winterize engines every fall to protect cooling systems where water might be trapped and freeze.

At the same time, treat engine inner workings with fogging oil to prevent corrosion. Except for a few outboards, engines require an oil change, along with new oil and fuel filters, every year.

Annual service also includes a comprehensive, though fairly simple, list of places to lubricate and inspect. Enginecooling pump impellers last for two or three years, but change them more frequently if you often operate or dock in shallow, silty water, which abrades rubber impellers.

Underwater paint and hardware Change sterndrive or outboard gear-case oil every fall, or at least check for water intrusion while winterizing the engine. Send propellers with more than a couple of minor nicks to the prop shop to be reconditioned.

Use only recommended cleaning products aboard – many boats use plastic vanity mirrors, for instance, which are damaged by alcohol in household glass cleaners.

Water dripping from leaking hardware on deck can be hard to see, but if you find that one particular storage compartment smells musty, look around that area with a flashlight the next time you’re aboard during a rain shower.

Some water invariably finds its way into the boat, which collects in the bottom of the hull, or the bilge, in nautical terms. Bilge pumps keep that water level low, but there is always a bit of water left that can’t be pumped out. Add biodegradable bilge cleaner wherever that water collects to keep the boat smelling fresh.

Air-conditioning systems

Boating on Whitewater Lake is a favorite pastime for many locals and visitors.

Make sure to keep your boat well-maintained so you can enjoy all the lake has to offer.

If your boat has air conditioning,

type, climate, region and even local water bodies. Ask around, but expect to repaint the boat’s bottom every one to three years.

Unpainted metal anodes attached to sterndrives or inboard prop shafts and rudders are there to prevent corrosion. Replace them when they’re 50 percent deteriorated.

Teak decks, wood trim and metal hardware Wax is the best protectant and cleaner for metal, particularly aluminum. Whatever you choose – spanning bright, glossy varnished trim to just soap and water on teak, letting its natural oil protect the wood – stay on top of it. Stripping old varnish once it starts to crack and peel is expensive, but a coat of varnish midseason, as soon as the finish dulls noticeably, is a quick, simple job. Ignoring and

then revitalizing teak also shortens its life.

Batteries and electrical systems Maintenance-free batteries should last for three years or more.

Never ignore a hard-to-start engine, though, as even brand-new batteries occasionally fail. Fully charge batteries after each trip and before winter or prolonged storage, and have batteries load-tested every spring – a simple procedure done aboard the boat. Immediately address any signs of water dripping onto electrical panels or junctions, and don’t store gear where it might damage wiring.

Fiberglass Rinse your boat thoroughly after each outing, and wash it once a week with mild

consider using the dehumidifier mode while you’re not aboard, but only if you’re able to check on the boat every day or two.

Clear debris from air conditioner’s seawater-plumbing strainers at least weekly, or anytime the air conditioner’s cooling-water stream coming out of the side of the boat seems to be weaker than normal. Clean the return-air filters in the cabin monthly.

Most air-conditioner problems stem from poor seawater flow, so inspect pumps and plumbing a few times each season.

Owner’s manuals for each onboard system include maintenance schedules.

When in doubt, ask a pro. Advice from other boaters is well-intentioned but not always correct for your boat. The boat dealer, or anyone who repairs boats for a living, is a much better source.

Alcohol boating Think before you drink Almost half of all boating accidents involve alcohol. That should be reason enough to leave alcohol consumption for when you are safely ashore with no plans to travel.

Operating a boat while intoxicated is a federal offense, subject to a $1,000 fine. In addition, criminal penalties are as high as $5,000, and may even include jail time.

State Boating

Under the influence laws are becoming more stringent too. In most states, the standards for determining whether an individual is intoxicated matches its state highway laws for operating a vehicle.

Wisconsin law prohibits anyone from operating a motorboat or manipulating water skis or similar devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Anyone who operates or attempts to operate a vessel is deemed to have given consent to an alcohol and/or drug test.

It is illegal for a person to operate a motorboat or use water skis, a surfboard, or other device if he or she: • Is under the influence of an intoxicant or a controlled substance; or • Has a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or greater.

The effects of alcohol Alcohol and drugs cause impaired balance, blurred vision, poor coordination, impaired judgment, and slower reaction times.

Balance is critical on a boat; simply falling overboard and drowning accounts for at least one in four boating fatalities.

Alcohol reduces inhibitions, causing normally cautious people to try stunts or enter high-risk situations a sober person would avoid.

If you plan to drink, don’t go boating, or save your alcohol for when you’ve arrived safely back at the dock.

Alcohol severely diminishes your ability to react to several different signals at once. It takes longer to receive information from your eyes, ears and other senses, and still more time to react. Reduced night vision and the inability to distinguish red from green makes the intoxicated night boater an even greater hazard.

Exposure to sun, motion of the waves, and the noise and vibration of your boat’s engine causes fatigue.

Alcohol impairs your senses further.

Stressors, such as exposure to noise, vibration, sun, glare, wind and the motion of the water, affects boat operators and passengers, thus making drinking while boating even more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Research shows that hours of exposure to boating stressors produces a kind of a fatigue, or “boater’s hypnosis” which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol or drugs to boating stress-factors intensifies their affects – each drink multiplies your accident risk.

Kayaking is a water sport that can be beneficial to the mind and body. Just about anyone willing to spend a day on the water can benefit from learning about kayaking and how to get started with this rewarding activity.

The history of kayaking is interesting. The word “kayak” means “hunter’s boat,” and the Inuit used to rely on these small vessels to catch food by sneaking up on their prey from the water’s edge. Some people still hunt and fish from their kayaks, but many are happy to use them for sightseeing and exercising.

“Paddlesports are increasing in popularity among Americans who desire to connect with the outdoors,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. The Outdoor Foundation and The Coleman Company Inc. found in a Special Report on Paddlesports that 21.7 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.

Learning how to kayak does not involve a significant initial financial investment. The outdoor experts at REI say there’s a good chance a novice kayaker will not go out and buy a boat immediately.

It’s important to first get a feel for the sport and then go from there.

Although it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s recommended that novices take paddling lessons to hone their kayaking skills. Learning the proper technique can help people avoid strain on their neck and back and safeguard their arms from fatigue.

Novices should practice on calm waters until their technique is honed. Lakes are a great place to learn, as rivers and places with mild currents can overwhelm those new to the sport.

One of the easiest ways to get introduced to kayaking is to go with an experienced paddler or tour company. Such companies charge a set price for an excursion that will provide transportation to the drop site as well as the equipment needed for the voyage.

Tours may include travel down several miles of a relatively calm waterway, allowing novice kayakers to get a feel for paddling and take in the scenery.

Getting in and out of a kayak can be challenging for beginners. The resource Kayakpaddling.net offers helpful illustrations and animated tutorials about entering and exiting kayaks as well as paddling techniques and safety.

Kayakers should bring some essentials along. A dry pack can keep electronics, food and equipment dry. Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat to keep safe from the sun. A life vest also is essential.

Warhawks, Fairhaven have first-ever ‘Afternoon of Fun with Warhawk Athletes’

Friday the 13th of April proved to be a good luck day for more than 50 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students and residents of Fairhaven Senior Services as they gathered together for the first “Afternoon of Fun with Warhawk Athletes.”

Fifty-five UW-Whitewater student athletes from volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, cross county and men’s and women’s soccer shared part of their afternoon with Fairhaven residents taking in a performance of island music by “Bahama Bob” Bob Milan, dancing with Willie the Warhawk, and playing table games, including Yahtzee, Euchre, the

Mexican Train Game and dominos.

As a memento of the event, residents were presented with a personalized picture frame prepared by UW-Whitewater students from Roberta’s Art Gallery for their photo with Willie the Warhawk or student athletes.

Brian Robinson, Director of Leisure Services, arranged the afternoon of fun with the assistance of Kristina Navarro, associate athletic director for student development and strategic initiatives at UW-Whitewater, and UW-Whitewater student athlete leader Morgan Beaty.

“The relationship with the student athletes has been incredible since they have started coming over about three-and-a-half years ago

and continues to grow with each semester,” Robinson said.

During the academic year, UW-Whitewater athletic team members share time with residents in “Meet and Greet” programs, along with working besides residents in making dog treats and in a variety of art projects such as decorating pumpkins for Halloween.

“The event held today was a way for us to have one last event with a large group before exams and the semester comes to an end. Walking around and seeing the smiles, laughter, and socialization going on was everything I could have hoped for as that is what it is all about,” Robinson said. “Creating

these intergenerational experiences has been rewarding for not only the residents at Fairhaven but also the student athletes, and I am excited for the visits next school year.”

According to Navarro, the partnership with Fairhaven is a cornerstone of the Warhawks Give Back Program.

“Student athletes really value the opportunity to engage with members of the community who support our athletics program,” Navarro said. “From a developmental standpoint it is most rewarding to see the organic conversations that develop including life lessons residents share with our students.”

However, it takes a lot of time and energy from DNR employees and local/area club members and volunteers to make it such a great destination for horse lovers as well as other fans of the outdoors.

The SKMHTA was formed in August 2003 after the fledgling club had been a chapter of the Glacial Drumlin Horse Trail Association, an advocacy group headquartered in Dane County. The association’s membership roll featured a little more than 100 households to end 2017, and LeRoy is excited about the future.

“We’ve provided the labor and raised funds for many special activities and facilities, such as the electricity at the campgrounds,” LeRoy said. “We’ve received lots of donations and support from local businesses in Eagle and Palmyra, and not just places related to the horse riding community.

Restaurants, gas stations and other businesses have been heavily involved, but at the same time our facilities and events bring them a lot of business. So, it’s been all about building strong community relationships.”

While that tri-county region of Walworth, Jefferson and Waukesha counties provides the largest and arguably the most popular venue(s), it’s not the only location in the Southern Lakes area offering options for horseback riders.

Richard Bong State Recreational Area, located about eight miles southeast of Burlington in northwestern Kenosha County, features more than 13 miles of equestrian trails, plus 4.5 miles of horse riding/ snowmobile routes.

Beth Goeppinger is a naturalist at the 4,515-acre recreational area, where the horse trails closely follow park boundaries south of Wisconsin Highway 142.

“I’ve ridden on the trails once, but I’ve walked them many times,” said Goeppinger, who has worked at Bong for nearly 24 years.

“They’re not super busy, but I know a group of people south of here comes over a lot … they own homes near an access point.”

She said the trails aren’t open during the spring if it’s too wet. However, riders take advantage of the trails most other seasons.

“Fall usually is the busiest time,” Goeppinger said. “The park offers nice wooded areas and a lot of beautiful prairies.

You won’t see the hills and things like at the Kettle Moraine, but they’re nice trails.”

Another, much shorter riding opportunity is available on a 2-mile stretch from Springfield to Lyons, a trail that runs adjacent to the White River State Trail, a 19-mile hiking/biking jaunt that travels from Elkhorn to Dover, with a two-mile gap in Burlington.

Numerous stables also offer guided trail rides, including Dan Patch Stables in Lake Geneva and Dream A Horse, Wild 3L Ranch and Kettle Moraine Ranch, all near Eagle.
