When shopping for a dealer to purchase your new boat or watercraft from, be sure to take into consideration the dealership’s location, references, certifications and helpfulness of the staff.

Finding the right boat dealer

While you’re comparing boats, don’t forget that the dealer you decide to do business with will have a huge impact on your boat-buying and ownership experience.

Depending on your location, there might be only one who carries the model of boat you really want. However, if you’re torn between two or three models from different brands and different dealers, the quality of the dealership and its staff may well sway your decision.

Some points of comparison are relatively easy to figure out. For instance, if you are partial to an engine make, a dealer who services that engine might rank higher than another dealer – and Discover Boating advises selecting the boat based upon some local ability to get your boat serviced by factory-trained personnel.

Other factors – such as customer service and commitment to the brand of boat you’d like to purchase, and more – can be harder to determine.

Here are some elements to look for at the dealership to identify dealers who are more likely to enhance your buying experience:

a traditional retail interaction, a boat dealership is one business that you’ll likely develop an ongoing relationship with.

Do you like the staff?

Do they have certification?

Does the store staff seem happy? And do you like the staff? If you find that people in the store are attentive, engaging and genuinely happy to see you, it bodes well for the future. Plus, it’s always nice to work with people you like and, unlike

If the positive reports far outweigh the critical posts, it’s likely a good reflection of their overall customer service.

Get references

Talk with existing customers and local boaters. Don’t be afraid to ask for references. You’d expect the same during a job interview. And if you have friends, neighbors or co-workers who have recently purchased a boat, see how they felt about their dealership experience.

Is the staff responsive?

Is the staff prompt in returning phone calls and emails? A salesperson’s willingness to work with you by phone or email is a great timesaver and a positive sign for the future. Make sure to ask for an email confirmation of any agreements or details worked out by phone.

Has the dealership been certified or received any industry awards or local community accolades? A Marine Industry Certified Dealership has made a

commitment to putting customers first. It begins with the Consumer Bill of Rights setting the bar to provide outstanding and ever-improving customer sales and service experience.

If a dealership participates in the Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index program and has received CSI awards, it is a good sign that it has a culture of topquality customer care.

Boating Industry’s Top 100 dealer list includes some of the most customercentric dealers in the country. Community involvement is also a sign the dealership has a customer-first organizational focus.

Is it clean?

Are the yard and showroom clean and organized? That is usually an attribute of a well-run organization and indicator how they’ll care for you and your boat after the sale.

Look into the service department

Talk to the service manager. Again you are looking for pleasant, helpful people and a relatively clean, organized shop. You want to know that your boat is in good hands when it comes time for maintenance.

Does the service department hold manufacturer certifications? Many engine manufacturers offer certification programs designed to keep dealer-based mechanics up to date on the latest technology.

Consider the location

Is the dealership conveniently located to where your boat will live? Choosing a dealer far from the location where you plan to keep your boat is a huge disadvantage.

A good practice is to purchase your boat from the dealership you plan to have it serviced. It will be much more convenient and ensure you’ll get the high level of after-the-sale service you deserve. Additionally, a dealer who will come to your marina or dock to service and repair the boat in the water is an even greater benefit.

Whitewater’s free Family Festival returns Celebrate the Fourth of July with food, fun and fireworks

Families looking for some free fun over the Fourth of July week need to look no further. Whitewater will have its annual Family Festival at Cravath Lakefront Park, 312 Whitewater St., June 29 to July 4.

The festival opens 5 p.m. on Friday, June 29, and the carnival is offering a wristband special from 5 to 9 p.m. for $20.

The six-day event features a parade, midway, ski shows, petting zoo, pony rides, pedal tractor races, car show, beer tent, fireworks, car show, live music and the Miss Whitewater Pageant.

Miss Whitewater will be crowned at 4 p.m. on July 4.

Whitewater’s Minneiska Ski Team performs on Cravath Lake at noon on July 1 and 12:30 p.m. on July 4.

The festival is paid for by local sponsors and businesses and organizers take pride in the fact that the event is free.

The festival features two fireworks displays, which go on rain or shine. The first will be at 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, and the second at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4. The City of Whitewater, Whitewater Chiropractic and The Coburn Co. sponsor the fireworks.

The festival will host live musical acts all through its run, starting opening night

on June 29 with Titan Fun Key at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s entertainment lineup includes The Chris Kohn Band performs at 2 p.m., Ol’ Style Skratch at 5:30 p.m. and Music 33RPM at 8:30 p.m.

Dixie Crush will be on stage at 7 p.m. on July 3.

Bands appearing on July 4 will include The Steve Meisner Band at 2 p.m., UnKommon Wealth at 5:30 p.m. and Cold Sweat and the Brew City Horns at 8:30 p.m.

See the parade

The Fourth of July parade is organized

by The Whitewater Lions Club and steps off from Lincoln School on Prince Street at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4. It proceeds down Main Street and ends at Fremont Street.

This year’s them is “Freedom in the Heartland.” Sgt. Michael Davenport of the U.S. Army is the grand marshal.

Area children are encouraged to decorate their bikes for the parade. Bicyclewise and Sports Fitness, 1130 W. Main St., Whitewater, will host a bike safety check and decorating booth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 1.

Run the race

The annual Whippet City Mile is just

before the parade, starting about 9:45 a.m. on July 4. The course follows the parade route beginning on the corners of Highland and Prince, progressing onto Main Street, and then finishing downtown.

The race is open to anyone who is looking to run his or her fastest mile ever in front of thousands lining the parade route. The last seventh-tenths of the mile cruises down hill into Whitewater’s downtown area.

Registration is $10 and includes a T-shirt and a finishing medal.

Check out the cars

The 34th annual Whitewater Car Show and Rally will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 4.

The show, sponsored by First Citizens State Bank, features antique cars, classic Mustangs and Corvettes, muscle cars, vintage motorcycles, sport bikes, touring bikes, mud trucks, custom sport race cars and more.

The show has multiple categories with first, second and third place prizes, plus Best of Show. Registration and judging is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The awards, raffle and trophy presentation is at 2 p.m.

Food vendors

All food and beverage purchases are made with tickets, or festival dollars, which can be purchased at information/ticket booths in $.50 increments and/or sheets of $10 increments.

The food vendors are all non-profit area organizations that use this opportunity as a fundraiser for community programs and projects.

Watersports

You may even find a transom remote to control the stereo. Another benefit of coving? It allows you to enjoy the boating lifestyle, while not using fuel.

Orchestra announces several upcoming events

The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra recently ended its 2017-18 season with a performance at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay. The concert included the first movement of “Horn Concerto No. 1” by Richard Strauss, “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg and “Symphony No. 5” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

And the orchestra’s lineup featured a Whitewater flavor in several of its pieces.

Allisan Barrett, a 2018 graduate of Whitewater High School, opened the evening’s concert by playing horn with the LGSO in the Strauss concerto. She is the winner of the 2017 Young Artist Concerto Competition and the Rotary Club of Lake Geneva Neal Heffernan Art Scholarship.

Her father, Josh, playing trumpet, and brother Nathan, playing trombone, joined the orchestra for the next two selections.

Before leading the orchestra in the “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1,” LGSO music director David Anderson provided an overview of the group’s two summer concerts, which will see the orchestra performing similar but not identical programs of music from movie blockbusters, including “Lord of the Rings,” “Star Wars” and “Superman.”

The June 21 free admission concert at 7 p.m. will be at the Phoenix Park Bandshell in Delavan.

On June 24, the LGSO will take the stage at 4 p.m. as part of the Music by the Lake series at George Williams College of Aurora University in Lake Geneva.

After the June 24 concert at approximately 6 p.m., the LGSO will host its annual fundraiser Summer Splash at the Simple Café, 525 Broad St., in Lake Geneva.

Combining tasty creations from Simple Café and the musical talents of LGSO members and friends, this annual event raises money for the LGSO’s concerts as well as the ensemble’s educational

Anderson also announced that on March 16, 2019, the LGSO will perform Beethoven’s “9th symphony” — with full orchestra, chorus and soloists — at Young Auditorium in the Greenhill Center of the Arts on the University of WisconsinWhitewater campus.

In preparing the audience for the evening’s performance of Beethoven’s “5th symphony,” Anderson shared with

the audience how as a 20-year-old college student on a road trip with a friend, he was intrigued by a pattern of “short, short, short, long” notes in an orchestral composition that he was hearing on the car radio but with which he was unfamiliar.

Later, Anderson came to learn that he had been listening to a movement of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5.”

Anderson continued to say that Beethoven’s “idea of using the same motif

(short, short, short, long) in every single movement was extremely revolutionary.

This was one of the first major pieces that does that.”

So, with the final measure of “Beethoven 5,” the LGSO ended its 2017-18 season, but at the same time pointed ahead to its historic performance of “Beethoven 9” during its next season.

Local businesswoman battles gender bias to grow family business

Since she was 19 years old, Crystal Singer has been involved in the Whitewater Manufacturing Co., a family business first opened by her great-grandfather and grandfather in 1943 and later owned by her father.

Whitewater Manufacturing specializes in a variety of services including welding, engineering, supply chain management and inspection services. Singer is the owner and president of the company.

As a woman in a professional field historically dominated by men, Singer said she understands the stereotypes and doubts sometimes expressed about female business owners and entrepreneurs. Women often face gender-related challenges in the world of business including limited access to funding and earning respect.

As a woman in business, Singer said she has experienced others questioning her credibility and knowledge because she is a woman working in a primarily male-dominated industry. Using her past experiences and genuine passion for her work, Singer said she knows her product and how to best help her customers. She attributes her success to thoroughly understanding the field and how her business can market their services to reach a variety of different industries.

Growing up, Singer had strong female role models

that she looked up to. Both of her grandmothers had a strong sense for business, which continues to influence her business’s success and commitment to her customers and the Whitewater community.

Born and raised in Whitewater, Singer uses her knowledge and experience to give back to the surrounding communities. She serves on many boards and committees including the PremierBank Board of Directors, Greater Whitewater Committee, Crystal Singer Whitewater Tech Park, Seed Fund Capital Screening and MercyCare Grievance Hearing member.

Singer said everyday operations at Whitewater Manufacturing include an efficient routine with a strong focus on an open atmosphere with both customers and employees.

Singer said the most important lesson she has learned throughout her years in business is the importance of being honest and always being transparent in communicating with workers, customers, and the community. In fact, her favorite part about her job is interacting with customers.

She loves being able to hear about a problem a customer might be having and then working together to solve the problem with a creative and beneficial solution.

“Honesty and integrity are some of the most important qualities that you can bank on in both personal and professional situations,” Singer said.

To women who are pursuing an education in a maledominated subject area or are working towards furthering their career, Singer encourages girls to pursue what they want, but also to be informed and educated. Singer believes in the importance of being assertive and focusing on your own passions, despite what others may think.

Singer said she appreciates the inclusive environment that she has experienced here in Whitewater but also understands the challenges that many women face in other professional environments.

Cooling off in a pool, lake or ocean can be a refreshing idea—but only if you know how to avoid the dangers.

Drowning is a leading cause of death in children under 14. One reason is that 70 percent of African-American and 60 percent of Hispanic children don’t know how to swim, the USA Swimming Foundation reports. Minority children are also less involved in competitive swimming when compared to their white peers, comprising only 1 percent of USA Swimming membership.

Some of the reasons include: • Lack of swimming access – Facilities in traditionally underserved communities are few and far between and tend to be expensive.

• Cultural constraints – Data shows there may be a legacy of fear, perpetuated through generations.

• Parental perceptions – Adults who don’t swim may not know what needs to be done so that their children learn to swim safely.

To help close the gap in swimming safety, the YMCA created Safety Around Water, a program that teaches children of all ages and backgrounds – and their parents – that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe.

The Y has scholarships for free water safety lessons to children in underserved communities. The children learn fundamental water safety skills that include what to look for in a safe place to swim, what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly,

and how to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety.

Water safety

If you know how to stay safe in and around water, swimming can be a lifelong source of fun and exercise. Here are six things you should know: • Never swim alone. Swim only when a lifeguard is on duty.

• Supervise children whenever they are in or near water. Whether it’s a bath, the ocean or anything in between, stay within arm’s reach of the child at all times.

• Don’t hold your breath. When swimming, children should avoid holding their breath for any length of time. This can lead directly to drowning and other severe physical side effects.

• Wear a life jacket. Novice and nonswimmers should wear Coast Guard– approved life jackets.

• Don’t jump in to save someone struggling in deep water. Even if you’re a great swimmer you can be overpowered by a panicked person, pulling you underwater.

The Y teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for the swimmer and pull him or her to safety.

Local campground is a hidden gem Horseriders group begins installing corrals at campsites

Palmyra may be a small town, nestled in the heart of the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest, but it is home to one of the most beautiful equestrian campgrounds and trail systems in the state and is well known by riders from all over the Midwest.

Horseriders Campground is located one mile south of Palmyra on Little Prairie Road. Easily accessible and easy to find – from Main Street, locals will tell you to “turn at the True Value Hardware store and go one mile.”

Once there, visitors will enjoy staying at one of the more than 50 available campsites with amenities including electricity, shower house, and flush toilets along with access to 54 miles of bridle trails. Trails include a variety of terrain, several picnic sites, a developed obstacle course trail, and even offer access to several local horse friendly restaurants and businesses offering corrals or hitching posts for their four-legged patrons.

The campground lies within the state forest and the Department of Natural Resources owns and manages the property. However, the campground and adjacent trails have benefitted greatly from a volunteer base of area equestrians passionate about its care.

One such local group, the Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trail Association,

has spearheaded a multitude of projects over the years, in coordinated efforts with the DNR. With the association managing projects, including all of the fundraising, the campground now boasts many improvements such as: electricity on 29 campsites and the covered park pavilion; hitching posts; group fire pits; mounting blocks, color coded maps, and well-marked trails – made possible by donations and installed by volunteers.

In another long-awaited project, the association has begun installing permanent horse corrals on campsites and has planned to add two 2-by12-foot corrals at each of eight campsites in 2018. Additional corrals will be added as funding is received.

“The addition of permanent horse corrals will encourage a broader range of horse enthusiasts, encourage more users to visit, and allow a safe and secure area for horses to stay,” SKMHTA President Tara LeRoy said.

With so many features to offer, it is not surprising the Palmyra campground is host to many annual events for local groups. However, it’s also able to routinely lure visitors from surrounding states and annually hosts more endurance rides than any other location in the entire Midwest.

Endurance riding is a challenging sport, where horse and rider work as a team to complete a set trail course, within the allotted time parameters and horses are under the watchful eye of ride veterinarians.

Although Arabian horses are the most common breed used in endurance, horses of any breed may participate, as long as minimum age and veterinary requirements are met.

Ride lengths can vary, with the most common being 25-mile limited distance or competitive trail rides and 50, 75, or 100mile endurance rides.

Participants of all ages ride – with junior riders requiring an adult sponsor to accompany them. It’s not unusual to see adults riding with their children and grandchildren competing together and enjoying the camaraderie of a weekend of camping, pot luck dinners and riding.

The events are sanctioned by both American Endurance Ride Conference (www.aerc.org), which is the national governing body for endurance riding and Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Ride Association (www. umecra.com), the regional sanctioning body for endurance rides held in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Also offered in conjunction with these rides are Competitive Driving events,

sanctioned by the Midwest Distance Driving Association (www.mdda.info).

There are many benefits to an area routinely hosting these types of events, one of which is more visitors spending money in the community. A group like endurance riders will fill the campground to capacity for an entire weekend – rain or shine – and frequent local gas stations, grocery, coffee shops, restaurants, and more during their visit.

The most recent event was held over a very rainy Mother’s Day weekend, during weather that would ordinarily leave campgrounds empty. Despite the cold and rainy weather, 54 participants camped and competed over the weekend.

Jen Moore was one of those competitors.

“I travel from LaCrosse, Wisconsin three times a year to compete and camp at Horserider’s Campground,” Moore said. “I love all of the amenities there including the bath house, pavilion, high ties and electric sites. I also love that there is a great group of active members of the horse club there that takes such good care of the park and trails. I’m super excited about the new pens going in!! And the trails! I love the beautiful and challenging trails!”

Roxi Welling, another recent visitor with more than 9,600 endurance miles earned in competition – many of those miles obtained on Palmyra’s trails over the years – also competed in May. “I travel from Sidney, Iowa,” Welling said. “I enjoy the trails, vet care and ride management and we like having Palmyra so close for convenience of forgotten items or a burger.”

Ride managers also love the comfort and convenience of the campground, making it an easy choice when it comes to deciding where to do their events – Elinore Tonsor helps manage rides there every year.

“I love the pavilion…I’ve been riding and managing rides there for 40 plus years.

Love the fact that the park never closes due to rain. Makes life much easier for the ride managers. The new park ranger has been very easy to work with, and we appreciate her help,” Tonsor said.
