Choosing the right boat for your needs

Living in the Midwest there is relatively little time to enjoy summer outdoor activities so when the weather is warm, people head outside in droves to have some fun in the sun.

Outdoor activities ranging from bicycling, tennis, sun bathing, golfing or hiking attract adults and children alike in Southern Lakes Area.

For many along the lakes, it is their passion is to spend as much time as possible on or in the water. So as the sun rises in the sky, boats of various types take to the water.

The boats that are seen on the local lakes are as different as the people who own them. From the simple kayaks to the highpowered racing boats and elegant sailboats, each meets the needs of the boater with some looking to slowly taking in the scenery while others seeking high speeds as they race across the water.

Before deciding what type of boat one would like to own or rent, it is best to start by checking out a variety of boats. Is it a boat that you can handle alone, taking time out on the water to relax and enjoy the scenery? Or is the boat of your dreams one that will allow you to spend time with family and friends, perhaps enjoying water activities such as water-skiing, tubing, wake surfing, or fishing?

Kayaks

So let’s start with the kayak. The kayak is a type of canoe that was originally used by the Inuit Indians. It was made of a light frame with a watertight covering with a small opening in the top that allows one to sit inside and to move quickly and silently down the river or stream.

The kayak is propelled by the use of a double-bladed paddle. Today, most kayaks, especially the lower-end or beginner boats, are made of polyethylene plastic.

Many boaters who enjoy kayaking have chosen the sport because it does not take a lot of preparation. Just jump in the kayak and one is on their way to enjoy time on the water.

They enjoy the peacefulness of the water, often going out in the early morning when there is less motorboat traffic, to take in the sounds of nature around the lake.

Kayaking is a good aerobic exercise.

Kayak’s can be purchased for individuals or as a two-person kayak. The beginner kayaks are a bit wider for stability and heavier than the more advanced touring styles.

A kayak is an inexpensive boat compared to others that will be seen on the water, beginning at less than $200, but as one moves up to the touring style boats for kayaking under more adverse conditions, the price goes up.

Kayaks, because they do not have a motor, do not need as much maintenance.

No motors to clean and repair. Just wash the boat periodically. It is easy to transport, often it can be carried on a roof carrier.

Pontoon boats

If you are looking for a little more excitement and more versatility on the water, take a look around at the variety of boats seen on the water.

Pontoon boats are one of the best-selling boats in the state. When purchasing a boat, make sure to look at how you will use the watercraft before making a final decision.

is the pontoon. A pontoon is a rather flat boat that floats on pontoons. The pontoons are airtight, hollow structures designed to provide buoyancy. The boats can have two or three pontoons.

Pontoon boats are a favorite for families, providing a stable platform for large groups to get out on the lake.

Originally the pontoon was considered a slow boat, something that would appeal to older people who just wanted a slow ride in somewhat comfortable seats. They were not necessarily looking for a fast ride or to partake in activities such as waterskiing or tubing. But if you watch the pontoons skimming across the water and view the people riding in them, it is easy to see that times have changed for the pontoon.

The pontoons vary in size. They can be small such as 14 feet but most are between 18 and 27 feet. Before choosing a pontoon, think about how many people you want to have in the boat at a time. Also what types of activities will be enjoyed using the boat. Will it be used just for short pleasure rides? Or is fishing your favorite activity?

For others the boat is just a means to enjoy many water sports.

Pontoons vary in cost starting around $20,000 for a basic model with a small

motor and continuing to increase in cost some going as high as $200,000. Pontoons offer a variety of seating arrangements so it is wise to check out a variety of models before making your decision.

There are some pontoons available as used boats. Buying a used boat is somewhat like purchasing a used car. You don’t know how the boat has been cared for and whether it will last. Buying a used pontoon can save money and may be the way to enter into the boat ownership role.

Ski boats

Those interested in waterskiing or tubing will most likely look toward the traditional ski boat.

The Malibu Wakesetter boat is one of the new types of boats specifically designed for wake boarding as it controls the form of the wake.

Investing in a boat

Purchasing a boat is an investment.

Not only does one need to buy a boat but they will need a pier if they wish to keep it in the water. If not, a trailer is needed to move it to and from the lake or to travel to different lake areas.

During the winter months, cold storage

is needed, preferably indoors. If stored outdoors, boats need to be shrink-wrapped to keep moisture from entering.

Once the boat is purchased there are the safety items such as life jackets. The

Understanding dry drowning

Summer fun is punctuated by afternoons spent in the pool or diving through the waves of the ocean. With swimming being such a large part of warm weather recreation, people of all ages have acclimated themselves to drowning prevention measures.

While most people are familiar with the risks of drowning, they may have heard misinformation about conditions known as dry drowning or secondary drowning.

Dry drowning and secondary drowning can occur after a person has exited the water, which only heightens the

Once all the necessities are purchased the toys are needed. The tubes, water skis, fishing poles, and wave boards become a necessity. After all why have the boat if you can’t have fun with it.

Just as you would when buying a house or automobile, people often take out a loan for the boat that will be repaid over a 12- to 20-year period.

So while the idea of owing a boat and

having the ability to spend your days cruising out on the water and enjoying the fine days of summer entices you, the expense of boat ownership may be a bit uncomfortable.

Try renting

If the cost of purchasing a boat, trailer, renting a pier, paying for insurance, and the amount of time spent to keep the boat clean and seaworthy overwhelms you, there may be another way to enjoy some boating time this summer.

The American Osteopathic Association says that, although rare, dry drowning and secondary drowning can occur anytime up to 24 hours after a person stops swimming.

Dry drowning occurs when a person, typically a child, inhales water through his or her nose or mouth. This water then triggers a spasm in the airway, causing it to close, and can impact breathing. Secondary drowning happens when swimmers have taken water into the lungs. WebMD says this water can irritate the lining of the lungs and lead to fluid buildup. This is a condition called pulmonary edema.

Dry drowning and secondary drowning can be dangerous, but the conditions are uncommon. Florida Hospital Tampa advises that these events make up between 1 and 2 percent of all drownings, and symptoms tend to show themselves by way of coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing, and feeling extremely tired.

drowning also may experience irritability or a drop in energy levels because his or her brain is not getting enough oxygen.

Dr. Katherine H. Hensley, a physician at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, says dry drowning, or what is more accurately known as “drowning with delayed mortality,” since dry drowning and secondary drowning aren’t medical diagnoses, is overblown. Symptoms after a drowning incident or water inhalation rarely progress to death. It’s also important to note that swallowing water, in which water goes the route of the esophagus and digestive tract, is very different from aspiration, which occurs when water enters the trachea and lungs.

Children who swallow water and do not have an aspiration event with coughing, sputtering and an inability to recover quickly are fine to return to the water whenever they want. Those who aspire water and have continued symptoms later in the day require an emergency medical checkup, Hensley said.

Safety tips for water skiing and wake boarding

Before getting up on the skis, make sure you know the rules of the waterway.

Thousands injured every year, experts say Wake boarding and water skiing are great ways to have fun and be physically active during the summer months, but certain safety precautions need to be followed to prevent serious injuries, experts say.

Every year in the United States, thousands of people are hurt in water skiing and wake boarding accidents, according to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in Columbus, Ohio. Wake boarding is similar to water skiing, but is done on a single board instead of two skis.

Most water skiing injuries involve sprains and strains in the legs. Wake boarders often get cuts and injuries to their head and face. Wake boarding is more likely than water skiing to result in a traumatic brain injury, cautioned experts at Nationwide Children’s.

There are ways water skiers and wake boarders can reduce their risk for injury before they head out to the water.

Know the safety codes
