Boat sales start strong at The Boathouse of Lauderdale Lakes

The Boathouse of Lauderdale Lakes has a longstanding history in the area and is in the midst of its best early season on record.

“This marina has been in business well over 50 years. It started as a small, outboard dealer and then in the ’80s and ’90s, when inboards became more popular, those were added to our mix along with pontoons,” Travis Quass, a salesman at The Boathouse, said.

“We’re in our best early season ever right now. We thought we had done that two years ago but are topping that season,” he added.

Formerly known as Lauderdale Lakes Marina, it became The Boathouse of Lauderdale Lakes seven years ago when Kevin and Andy Code bought the business.

“We were the second store in The Boathouse group but now there are seven.

Kevin and Andy are local, too, in that they’ve had lake homes here for years,” Quass said.

The marina in Lauderdale Lakes is the No. 1 inboard dealer in the Midwest, according to Jackie Rumer, the office manager.

north of Elkhorn, has grown in recent years into a full-service marina, from selling boats – new and used – and shore stations and lifts, to indoor/outdoor storage, and a pier division that installs and takes out piers as well as building new ones, fabricated along with custom wood docks.

“We also offer in and out service for people who don’t have a dock. Their boat stays here and when they need it we put it in the water and they take off from here.

When they’re done, we take it out and park it again,” Quass said.

He said the service department deserves credit for the marina’s growth in recent years.

“We’re certified to service all motors and good service leads to future sales and referrals. It’s really grown in the past 10 to 12 years,” Quass said.

“The goal is to service everything people need on the water – boats, piers and related equipment, and be a one-stop shop. We already offer all of that but are working

to build on the success we’ve had to this point,” he said.

In addition to a showroom, The Boathouse features a fully stocked ship store that offers cleaners, dock line, anchors and general safety items for those who spend time on the water.

“There’s also the Pro Shop, which features all styles of boards – paddle, wake and surf – along with skis, tubes and other items. All of the items in there are supplied

by The Board Shop out of Lake Geneva,” Rumer said.

To make things even easier on boaters, especially those who want to spend some long days on the lake, the marina has a gas dock that is fully staffed by an attendant in the summer.

Supporting the community is also important, the two long-time staffers said.

“From local sports teams to golf outings and the Shamrock Shuffle, we always do what we can to support the community,” Quass said.

Time to buy a boat?

The Boathouse at Lauderdale Lakes offers a full line of boats for a wide range of needs and budgets.

Quass said those looking for a pontoon should look no further than the Bennington, the No. 1 pontoon model, ranging in price from $20,000 to $150,000.

In the ski and wakeboard boat category, the marina sells Nautique, Supra and Moomba, with prices ranging from $55,000 to $200,000.

The runabout brand they sell is Crownline, while Hurricane is the deck boat of choice. Those fall into the $30,000 to $80,000 range.

One advantage to purchasing a boat at The Boathouse, Quass said, is the in-house financing available.

“It’s loans specific to boats through marine lenders. It’s different than a typical loan someone might get as far as terms,” he said.

“It’ll be an off-shoot sales location. An investor is going to operate the restaurant but we’ll offer boat slips for the restaurant, for use by those out on the lake that want to stop in,” Quass said.

Blue-green algae bloom season is on the horizon Those heading out to lakes and rivers are reminded to be on the lookout this summer for blue-green algae blooms on water bodies across the state. Some blue-green algae are capable of making toxins that can cause illnesses for people and animals who accidentally ingest or inhale water containing algae, or have prolonged skin contact with the algae.

“Blue-green algae are in all lakes and rivers in Wisconsin, but they only become a problem when they form nuisance-level growths, called blooms, on some water bodies,” said Gina LaLiberte, DNR’s statewide blue-green algae coordinator.

“Actively growing blooms are usually green

and have a ‘pea soup’ appearance, but blooms may also appear as blue, white, red, or brown scums that may be foamy or in mats.”

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health, common symptoms of exposure to toxic blue-green algae blooms include rashes, gastrointestinal ailments and respiratory irritation. People experiencing symptoms that may be due to blue-green algal exposure should contact their health care provider or the Poison Control Center at (800) 222-1222.

Public health officials encourage people to avoid swallowing any water and to always wash off after swimming in any lake, pond or river. Dogs should always be rinsed off with

clean water to remove algae from their coat. If people have any doubts about the appearance of water, they should stay out. They should ensure that children and pets do not swim in or drink water with an algae bloom.

People are also encouraged to help out by reporting blue-green algae blooms and potential blue-green algae-related illnesses in both people and animals to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services by calling (608) 266-1120 or filling out an online survey at www.dhs.wisconsin.gov.

Animals have a higher risk of dying after exposure to blue-green algal toxins because they are smaller in size and may ingest large amounts of toxins from drinking lake,

pond, or river water or licking algae from their coat. Symptoms in dogs can include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or even seizures. If your animal shows any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Blooms tend to grow when there is a lot of sunlight, water temperatures are high, and there is little wind. In Wisconsin blooms typically peak from July to September.

FREE FAMILY FESTIVAL RETURNS JUNE 30 TO JULY 4

Whitewater’s annual Fourth of July celebration will once again offer the free family festival it has become famous for.

The festival opens 5 p.m. on Friday, June, at Cravath Lakefront Park, 312 Whitewater St. The midway, provided by Christman Amusement, opens at noon.

The annual Fourth of July celebration features a parade, midway, beer tent, fireworks, car show, multiple musical acts and the Miss Whitewater Pageant.

The five-day event, which is paid for by local sponsors and

businesses, runs until Tuesday, July 4, with the American Legion Beer Tent, food vendors, live music and carnival open all five days.

The event have two fireworks displays, the first at 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, and the second at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4. The City of Whitewater, Coburn Co. and DLK Enterprises are sponsoring the fireworks.

Parade

The Fourth of July parade is organized by The Whitewater Lions Club and steps off from Lincoln

School on Prince Street at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 4. It proceeds down Main Street and ends at Fremont Street.

This year’s them is “Military Mardis Gras – Celebrating our Freedom.” Grand Marshal Bob Wulfkuhle, HC2, U.S. Navy, will lead the way.

Kids are again invited to “Decorate Your Bike For The Parade.” Bicyclewise and Sports Fitness, 1130 W. Main St., Whitewater, will host a bike safety check and decorating booth on July 1. The kids’ bike parade will from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 1.

Whippet City Mile

The 33rd annual Whitewater Car Show and Rally will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.

The show features antique cars, classic Mustangs and Corvettes, muscle cars, vintage motorcycles, sport bikes, touring bikes, mud trucks, custom sport race cars and more.

The show has 12 categories with first, second and third place prizes, plus Best of Show. Registration and judging is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The awards, raffle and trophy presentation is at 2 p.m.
