A hot time on the cold town Winterfest is a time to embrace outdoor fun

T

he Lake Geneva area becomes a winter wonderland filled with exciting indoor and outdoor activities during Winterfest, which runs from Jan. 26 through Feb. 3.

The yearly festival gets people out of their January slumber and returns some of the excitement that they experienced during the holidays.

Favorite activities return along the shore of Geneva Lake and throughout the community that appeal to visitors of all ages.

Two lakefront activities make their debut at Winterfest.

The

New this year

Located on Riviera Beach will be the Ice Castle, a frozen phenomenon said to bring fairy tales to life. The castle is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand placed by professional ice artists. The icicles are replaced daily as needed.

Myriad paths travel through the sculpture, which includes ice-carved tunnels, slides and beautiful fountains.

Also inside are LED lights embedded in breathtaking sculptures and the ice castle’s walls, which add a gorgeous glow.

Traveling through the ice castles is reminiscent of taking a trip through the movie “Frozen.” Those who have been

Hovercrafts will make their first appearance on the lakefront during Winterfest on Jan. 26.

“Hovercrafts are vessels that float on air and are powered by air,” said Joe Tominaro, director of marketing and development for Visit Lake Geneva.

Hovercraft rides will be available to the public from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased on-site: $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and younger.

From 2 to 4 p.m., watch the hovercrafts skimming over the lake as they compete in the Hovercraft Challenge, making their way through a challenging obstacle course.

At 3:30, a world speed record will be attempted to break the current official time in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The event will end with a lighted regatta on Geneva Lake.

Snow sculpting returns

For many visitors, Winterfest’s main event is the annual National Snow Sculpting Championship in which teams of expert snow sculptors turn large mounds of snow DINING into intricate sculptures. The competition is held in front of the Riviera and continues into Flat Iron Park.

Teams have qualified by winning state titles. The competition will begin on Jan. 30. Over the next few days, onlookers may see some of the artists, working through the night by flashlight if needed, as the mounds of snow are transformed.

On Feb. 2 from 11a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors may vote for their favorite sculpture for

the People’s Choice Award. Pick up ballots at the Riviera Ballroom starting at 10 a.m. and return them by 1 p.m. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m.

In Flat Iron Park, there also will be an area of snow sculptures created by local children.

Other events

On Jan. 27 a variety of events will be held throughout the area.

Travel to the Grand Geneva Mountain Top Chalet to view this human dog sled race.

Six people will take on all of the roles of a typical dog sled. Four will become sled pullers, replacing those beautiful Alaskan huskies. One will be a sled rider and the other the sled pusher. All sleds and harnesses are provided by Grand Geneva.

Teams must register ahead of time. Contact the chalet for more information and to register.

Hawk’s View Golf Club on Krueger Road will be the home of the fourth annual chili cook-off, which involves more than just chili.

It will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 2.

Chili sampling begins at 11:30 a.m. and continues until it’s gone. Tasters may vote for the People’s Choice Award.

That day features many other activities.

A Bloody Mary bar opens at 11 a.m. The Barnacles will entertain from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The kids will enjoy the hot cocoa bar and make s’mores by the fire. Enjoy face painting, a beanbag toss, miniature golf and other kid- friendly activities.

If weather permits, bring a sled and enjoy zipping down Hawk’s View’s big hill. It’s $10 for those age 10 and older and free for kids 9 and younger. A family of four is $25.

Come for activities after 1 p.m. without chili tasting for $5.

The traditional Winterfest Souper Family Night at Harbor Shore will once again offer a tasty treat for participants and will benefit the local food pantry. Restaurants will offer a variety of soups from 5 to 8 p.m.

Each person must donate at least two nonperishable items or pay a $4 cash donation.

Other activities will include music, balloon animals, jokes and an interactive

game show.

On Jan. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Riviera Ballroom will offer music, comedy and magic. Music by Unhitch’d will fill the air, and a magic and illusion show by popular local magician Tristan Crist will keep everyone mesmerized as the audience wonders “how he does he do it?”

Tickets are $10 and include the first drink.

Dancing Horses Theater offers glitz and glam

ana Montana’s dream to open what is now The Dancing Horses Theater began roughly 20 years ago.

“I had raised horses for 30 years and went to horse shows and all of that but didn’t feel like that was how I wanted to present them. Then I met Laura Amandes, who had previously worked at a big Arabian Nights show in Florida,” Montana said.

“I hired her and then on my birthday, she surprised me with a show. She had trained my stallion. It was the most moving thing I’ve ever seen, so I decided that’s what I wanted to do,” she said.

And Montana did.

It began with small shows at a variety of locations until the current property became available. Now, Montana has a crew of 10 people that run the shows, which feature about 25 horses, each trained in specific disciplines. Dancing Horses is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2019.

“It’s amazing that the show is done by a very small staff. They do everything from beginning to end and a lot in between,” she said.

Interns work along with the professional riders to present the show.

Joyce Bicek said the interns come from all over the county and have the opportunity to learn the many facets of the equine industry from experienced professionals.

“This is a chance of a lifetime to learn bareback, trick riding, gymnastics, dressage and the art of performing in front of a live audience,” she said. “Our talented professionals share their sincere love and passion for horses, by training and encouraging others.”

“For 15 years we have depended on our interns to provide the much-needed support for a show of this magnitude.

Without our interns it would be an impossible task to present this spectacular production. After this training period they have the option to become part of our staff.”

The Dancing Horses Theater is presenting “The Power of the Dream” this year and winter shows are at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Each horse show is followed by a 30-minute exotic bird show.

“All of our shows have something that appeals to anyone, including our holiday show. Kids like the unicorns and entertainment while adults enjoy the music and are impressed with the talent,” Reynolds said.

“Adults love the Frank Sinatra stuff and in the Christmas show we have Burl Ives – you can’t go wrong,” Montana added.

Reynolds said though the older adults enjoy the classic music selections, the shows feature a variety including popular, modern pieces.

Montana said live shows are fading, making what she offers even more important to continue.

“It costs too much overall, especially with animals. We’re one of the few things remaining that families can do as far as seeing a live show,” Montana said. “And it really is suitable for anyone. I’ve seen

2-year-olds mesmerized the entire time.”

The theater works with area hotels to get more publicity out and offer deals but Montana said she’s still surprised at the number of people who attend a show and say they just learned of it.

“Even (Lt. Governor) Rebecca Kleefisch attended with her children and said it’s one of the best kept secrets,” Montana said.

One of the keys to the success of The Dancing Horses has been the internship

program, which allows interns to live on the property and learn what it takes to put on a show while also gaining valuable experience.

“It helps them learn all facets of the business from those looking to get into horse entertainment to the production side of things with the lights and music,” Reynolds said.

During the warmer months, between late May and late October, guests can also visit Animal Gardens – featuring a baby

animal barn, a wildlife exhibit, a petting zoo and more.

Price breaks are available year-round for groups and parties as well as dinnershow packages and backstage pass options.

For groups of 25 or more, the theater will add show dates if the scheduled dates aren’t an option.

East Troy restaurant looks to form local partnerships

hen Brian Vedzi decided he wanted to open a new restaurant, he searched far and wide for the right location.

“I’ve always had the restaurant business in my blood, my dad had a restaurant and I worked in the trade with dad and the family for about 30 years,” Vedzi said. “I did work in the corporate world for a few years, but decided I wanted to get back in the restaurant business and I began looking for the right location. I even was looking at the Dallas area but I really wanted to stay in Wisconsin.”

Vedzi said it was his dad who found a restaurant in East Troy that he thought would be the perfect place for Vedzi and his brother, Rudy Vedzi, to take over – the Ale Station.

“I checked it out and thought the location was perfect,” Brian Vedzi said. “It’s right off the interstate and close to Milwaukee and Lake Geneva. That was the first reason I chose this location.”

Brian Vedzi said second reason was because he believes East Troy is growing and he wants to be in on that.

“You get this feeling that big things are coming. I see a lot of potential in the area,” he said. “And with the brewery opening up it seemed like a good fit.”

The East Troy Brewery, owned by Ann and Ted Zess and a few private investors, opened in the former bank building on the East Troy Village Square at the end of December. The Zesses spent more than a year remodeling the building.

“I want to carry their beer, if we can work it out,” Brian Vedzi said. “I’ve already approached the brewmaster, but they’re still getting up and running, so maybe in the future we can form a partnership.

“That’s exactly what we do here at the Ale Station, is focus on Wisconsin beers and what better way to do that, and showcase East Troy, than to have our own local beer available.”

Brian Vedzi said forming partnerships with other community businesses is a passion for him and he was already working with Hill Valley Dairy in Lake Geneva, which supplies the restaurant with all their cheese.

“I want to partner with everyone who’s willing,” he said. “We’re open to working with anyone we can, we really want to make this about what Wisconsin and East Troy has to offer.”

He added that the welcome he and his family have received from the community has meant a lot to them.

“When I first came here and began to meet the people they all seemed so nice and they’ve been so welcoming and supportive of us,” he said. “Everyone has been so nice.”

He said didn’t think a new name would be an advantage with branding and name recognition.

“It’s probably not the name I would have chose, but it fits the theme and people know it,” he said.

What the Vedzis did do was revamp the

menu.

“We toned it down a lot,” Brian Vedzi said. “We still have the Friday fish fry and other house specials, but we refined things.”

The restaurant just added Sunday breakfast/brunch hours, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ice castle opens on the shore of Geneva Lake

This winter there is a new mansion along the shores of Geneva Lake. But

by Sandra this mansion is actually a castle and is Landen Machaj unlike any other that has been built on the CORRESPONDENT lakeshore.

The structure is not a private home, or for that matter, even a permanent structure. Instead it is Lake Geneva’s newest winter attraction – an ice castle built on the sand along the lakefront.

The acre-sized castle, which weighs about 25 million pounds, is at 812 Wrigley Drive, next to the Riviera and is scheduled to open in January. Organizers originally planned a December opening, but the unusual warm weather pushed the start date into the new year.

“The ice castle will remain on the shore until approximately the end of February or beginning of March, if the winter weather allows,” said Joe Tominaro of Visit Lake Geneva.

According to Tominaro, the ice castle will bring in visitors to Lake Geneva throughout the winter season unlike activities that are only available for a day or a week or two.

Winter wonderland The castle is a fantasyland, a life-size winter playground

built entirely by hand. It is constructed of more than 10,000 handmade icicles carefully placed by a team of ice artisans.

Once the icicles are in place they are covered with water, which allows them to meld into a unique wall design. The walls are made only of these icicles – there are no other support structures.

Unlike some ice structures these are not built from blocks of ice, which creates a very symmetrical structure. The icicles allow more intricate designs because of the shape and manner in

which the icicles adhere to each other.

The walls themselves are often as much as 10 feet thick as the icicles drip and merge into one giant block of ice. Each day new icicles are added to replace those that may have melted from wind or warm temperatures.

A variety of frozen thrones and fountains are positioned in the castle.

Tunnels and slides are cut through the castle by the ice artisans with chain saws.

For the larger slides, people must measure at least 42 inches in height to take the plunge.

Lights at night At night the ice castle is lighted

by multi-colored LED lights that are embedded inside the ice, which twinkle to music.

The pathways are of crusted snow and in some places ice. Visitors are advised to wear good boots that can grab the snow and ice. Boots with high heels and flat-bottomed dress boots are not the best choice for walking through the castle.

Lightweight shoes and even athletic shoes may also not be appropriate or safe as they become wet and do not provide a good grip on the snowy paths.

And don’t forget gloves or mittens and a warm coat. Adding snow pants for children is a smart move.

Strollers are not accommodated in the castle but it is suggested that children be pulled on a small sled.

The first creation The creator of the ice castles was Brent

Christensen of Alpine, Utah. In 2009 he built an ice cave in his front yard as a way to encourage his family that includes six children to enjoy the outdoor weather.

The ice cave, while not nearly the size or as intricate as the ice castles, became a popular site for not only his children but also neighbors and friends.

A group of friends enjoys a visit to an ice castle. There are six ice castle locations in addition to the newest one in Lake Geneva.

In 2011 Christensen teamed with Ryan Davis and Ice Castles was founded and became a favorite winter experience for visitors as each new location was built.

Christensen developed the icicle construction technique. As in the movie, “Field of Dreams” – where the famous line “If you build it, they will come,” is used to explain why the field was built – the ice castles have attracted large numbers of visitors.

The concept has continued to grow with ice castles currently in six locations.

Five are located in the United States and one in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Lake Geneva is the newest of the ice castles and promises to be a successful destination.

Other ice castles are located in Dillon, Colorado; Lincoln, New Hampshire; Midway, Utah; and Stillwater, Minnesota.

All of the ice castles are on the shore

of a natural water source. This is done purposely so the water that is used in the ice castle can be returned directly to the environment.

Many people questioned why the ice has a beautiful blue color. The ice has that color, just as lakes and other water surfaces do, because water absorbs every color of the spectrum except for the blue hue. The blue becomes more visible in the ice as the thickness of ice increases.

Pets are not allowed in the ice castle.

The one exception is certified service animals. Service animal owners must have proof of certification to be allowed to enter with their animals. Ice Castles asks owners to take every precaution to avoid “yellow ice” when bringing in a service animal.

Based on experience at other ice castles, organizers recommend that tickets be purchased in advance for visitors to be assured of entry to the ice castle on the day and near the time of choice.

Tickets are issued with a half-hour time block to enter the structure. Once inside visitors may stay as long as they wish. Most people spend at least a half hour and many spend more time.

Tickets purchased online in advance are priced at $10.95 for children from 4 to 11 years of age and $15.95 for adults on weekdays. Weekend prices for tickets in advance are $14.95 for children and $18.95 for adults. Children younger than 4 are admitted free of charge.

Walkup tickets can be purchased on the day of visit if they are available.

Area students on a collision course PLTW program allows kids to apply knowledge to real-life

West Side Elementary School students Rylie Paterson, Tristian Chapman and River Speciale recently used real eggs in the cars they assembled to answer a series of questions: How do seatbelts and airbags absorb energy, where does the energy come from, where does a person get the energy that needs to be absorbed, and, does it matter how fast the car is going?

Through the Project Lead the Way program Dec. 19, the fourth graders used their new knowledge of potential and kinetic energy to learn about different kinds of collisions. The concepts were learned in science and applied to real life situations.

“I want to see if my egg crashes,” Paterson, who wants to be an author or science teacher, said. She said she also learned more about car safety through these exercises – such as the reason kids should never sit in the front of a car.

“It is really fun to learn about science,” Chapman, who would like to be an engineer, said. “If it is a failure, it is okay. You try it again.”

Speciale, who wants to be an electrician said it’s fun building the cars, “and you learn about real life, too.”

PLTW provides transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers by using a hands-on classroom learning environment. The students gain in-demand knowledge that helps provide them the skills for what they need to know to thrive in

today’s society.

Elkhorn Area School District has proven to be a leader in this type of learning as PLTW is a part of the curriculum for students in 4K through eighth grade.

Eryca Card, 4K – 8 PLTW Coordinator and Master Teacher received an Outstanding Educational Leader award and received recognition at the PLTW Summit in Kansas City, Missouri, in November. Only six educators received the award while 32 were recognized. Card will find out at the Indianapolis PLTW Summit in mid-February if she will be the national award winner.

Card was recognized for launching the kindergarten through fifth grade program in the district’s three elementary schools, expanded PLTW K-12 opportunities and coordinated professional development for teachers.

“She strongly believes that every student deserves to have an enriching, positive science experience and realizes that devoting time to develop the talents of the teachers is crucial in creating this hands-on environment for every learner,” Fourth grade West Side Elementary teacher Wendy Ellsworth wrote in her submitted nomination letter for Card.

“Thanks to Ms. Card’s mentoring and leadership, my students look forward to science and cannot wait to see what exciting topics they get to explore each day. She has positively impacted the lives of students, educators and community members within our city, our state and our country,” Ellsworth added in her letter.

Texas man’s ‘Heart for America’ bicycle ride travels through area

an effort to help heal some of the division in the United States, in 2018 a man from Texas went on a 3-month, 4,250-mile solo bicycle ride through the heartland, including Walworth County.

“America is a beautiful country, filled with diverse landscapes and people.

Sometimes it is difficult to see that beauty because of all the political arguing and distractions,” Kirk Gillock, 48, said prior to leaving Texas on Aug. 2.

After spending 14 years in Thailand – first volunteering as an English teacher and then founding a charity and opening a school – Gillock returned home last year.

“It was sad to see how much division there was. I really wanted to reconnect with my own country, go around and meet fellow Americans and spread some love,” he said in a phone interview early last week.

Gillock said he had done a similar thing in Thailand of following a route that makes a heart, but it was on a motorcycle to raise money for helmets.

Later, he followed another heart path and picked up trash. When he returned to the U.S., he decided to do the same, but on a bigger scale with the timing to finish before the midterm elections.

“I decided to start in Texas, where I’m from, and from there it was just creating as big of a heart as possible through the heartland,” he said.

Gillock said his mother always has been

supportive, “with unconditional love, but my dad was more like, ‘Why don’t you get a job?’ Eventually he understood why I wanted to do it and has been supportive. He was a marketing guy so has been helping me connect with people. They’ve both been great,” he said.

Along the way, Gillock traveled nearly every type of road imaginable and cycled through several states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas.

By the end of the trip, he will have traveled through 13 states.

While in Wisconsin, Gillock left Madison and was en route to Chicago when there was an unexpected stop in Walworth County.

“I was pulled over by a policeman in Elkhorn, a very nice guy. I had been on Highway 12 for a long time and it was a two-lane road but then turned into a fourlane road. He stopped me and told me I couldn’t ride on the four-lane road but gave me great advice about which route to take, and it was a great ride from there into Lake Geneva,” Gillock said.

Considering the number of miles traveled, he said there were only a few issues where he wasn’t able to take the route he had planned. And he said 99 percent of the drivers that passed him were friendly and considerate while he was riding.

“I only ran into two or three that were a little aggressive. That was one of my big concerns – am I going to get hit by a car? – but everyone was nice for the most part,” he said.

Safe travels This was a solo ride for Gillock, and while he expected there to be some solitude, he was surprised a few times – while traveling through Wyoming, for instance, when he never came in contact with another person.

“You get lonely out there and sometimes you talk to yourself. But I met some of the nicest people along the way. That’s what I really wanted to see. There are a lot of good people out there who just want to be happy and don’t want the bickering going on. I met people on both sides, including some Republicans and Democrats working together. It was great to see,” Gillock said.

He also had to deal with a variety of weather conditions. It was summer and hot in Texas when he took off on his journey, but early last week, when he was back in Texas just a couple hundred miles from completing the trek, he said it was cold.

He traveled lightly, with a saddlebag – one side red, the other blue, and paid for the trip entirely out of his own pocket.

“It was self-supported and a solo ride. I also removed all the logos from everything – the bike, the GPS, the GoPro cameras and so on, as I had no sponsors and bought all the equipment myself,” he said.

Most nights Gillock found an inexpensive hotel to stay in, but other nights, depending on where he was, he used his tent. He said he listened to music, podcasts and audiobooks at times but also turned it off and listened to the “wind and the cows and the birds and the

large trucks flying by me.”

While on the bike tour, Gillock said he heard from a lot of people that there seems to be anger and finger-pointing rather than listening.

“Both sides do have good ideas, we just need to work together. I don’t know if it’s always been like that and we haven’t been aware of it, or if it’s gotten worse. But it’s there now and the people I talked to know it needs to change,” he said.

Which brought him back to the reason for the bike ride.

“Balance is key – that was the idea with the bicycle. If you lean one way, you fall over and if you lean the other way the same thing happens. Everyone I’ve met and talked to really liked the idea, and it takes a lot to get peoples’ attention these days,” Gillock said.

Gillock is no stranger to coming up with extreme ideas to get a message across.

“While in Thailand teaching English, I noticed there was a big problem with road safety – every day people, including my students, were being killed on motorcycles. I realized I could make a bigger impact, started giving out helmets and gave out over 5,000 of them,” he said.

With three chairlifts and two carpet lifts, the Mountain Top at Grand Geneva provides plenty of ways to get back to the top.

The 25 unique runs at Wilmot Mountain offer varied terrain for all skiers and snowboarders; from novices stepping onto the snow for the very first time to experts looking to further push themselves and their sport.

Snowmaking, according to Wilmot General Manager Peter Disch, is a combination of science and an ideal atmosphere.

“While any natural snow is certainly always a plus, making our own snow at Wilmot Mountain really is a science,” he said. “Temperatures must be consistently 28 degrees or colder with low humidity’s in order for us to make quality snow.”

Officials monitor weather conditions closely and develop a snowmaking plan, he said.

Wilmot Mountain reports daily conditions on its website.

For tubing, Disch said, officials need more snow, considering the ski hill offers 22 carved lanes of snow tubing.

While Wilmot Mountain guests have differing preferences, tubing is one activity nearly anyone can enjoy.

Tubing, he said, is also beneficial to large groups.

“Anyone can tube because gravity does the work,” he said. “And it’s a fun thing to do with family and friends. We see many school groups, clubs and organizations that come out and utilize our group rates of 20plus.”

Better safe than sorry Area driver offers an alternative to getting behind the wheel impaired

is pretty common for Lucia Crivolio to deal with passed out people at her weekend job.

The Walworth County Uber and Lyft driver recalls once having a passenger so passed out she struggled in getting him to come to. Crivolio first called his name. No response. She poured a little water on him. Nothing. She shook him. Still nothing. Finally, she rubbed his sternum.

“And he woke right up,” she said.

And there was that other time, there was an unconscious man in the front seat and his wife was in the back. Crivolio asked his wife to wake him up. When his wife did, her husband bit her.

Whatever the case may be, Crivolio makes sure her passengers get back home safely and then she goes to her next pick up. , After working through Uber and Lyft since September 2017 on weekends, her biggest customers are the ones who go to the bars and use these options for safe transportation.

While there are differences between the two paid driving services, they are operated by a mobile app and provide a convenient way for community members to become drivers, upon passing a background check and other requirements.

The drivers use their own vehicle and have control over their schedules.

Lucia Crivolio is a Walworth County Lyft and Uber driver. She works Friday and Saturday night, and primarily provides safe transportation to community members who have been drinking. Lyft and Uber are run by mobile apps that provide people a paid driving service.

County who do not have good access to a taxi service, now have one, Crivolio said.

The passengers already have the app on their phones, and their credit card is already in the system. When a person is at a bar, he or she does not have to worry about where to find a taxi, who to call or make a big plan getting home safely. Uber and Lyft, Crivolio said, are pretty easy to use.

“But sometimes (when they are drunk), they struggle in typing their address (in the phone),” she said.

The app also lets passengers know where the driver is and how far a way they are. “They know everything,” she said. “They can call, text you or follow the app.”

While Black Out Wednesday and New Year’s Eve are the two biggest drinking days of the year and her two busiest driving days, not all of her passengers had been drinking.

There was one, she recalls, where the passenger offered to give her $20 to drive him to a gas station. OK, she thought. But after that stop, he then offered her another $20 to get to Walgreen’s.

“Why?” Crivolio finally asked. He needed condoms, he replied. “I was like, ‘Why did I even ask?’”

Her services also are needed for University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students, because when it is cold they may want a ride back to campus, people visiting from other countries don’t have a car or they use it for alternative transportation if one’s car breaks down.

After working at this job for more than a year, she has it worked out to a science. Especially after the incident when someone, after a local bar pick-up, vomited all over her car. The passenger tried to make it out but couldn’t, Crivolio said. Crivolio took pictures and that passenger got billed an extra $80, which Crivolio used to clean up her car.

Now, she is upfront with her passengers, especially ones who are very inebriated.

“I tell them to let me know if I need to stop,” she said, because she would rather have them vomit outside of her car. “I definitely learned from that.”

She also makes sure she has mints, gum, tissues and water for every shift. Tissues, she said, are for more first aid reasons, such as for that one passenger who hit his nose before entering her car and had a bloody nose. Mints and gum are commonly used if Crivolio is driving a passenger to a date and they want their breath to be fresh.

She was taught to always have items that customers may ask for. This concept has more likely contributed to Crivolio receiving an average rating of 4.91 out of 5.0 for about 200 passengers.

She said she may have the same people every weekend.

“I will remember them and their conversations. I meet a lot of people, young and old. You never know who you will get,” she said. “I like meeting people.”

She has one repeat customer who always wears a cowboy hat. I make sure to have country music on when I pick him up, she said.

Or there may be others that she will drive them to a bar sober to meet a date, and she will pick the same person up not as sober. But, at least, they get a safe trip home.

“I am making it safer for people around here and helping the cops by making the streets safer,” she said.

“People are so appreciative.”
