Food pantry moves back home Store returns to St. Andrew’s after renovations

The Harold Johnson Food Pantry, located in the basement of St. Andrew Church since 1980, has spent the past 21 months at a temporary location while its space at St. Andrew was renovated. The pantry moved back home on Sept. 15 and re-opened on Saturday.

“It felt really good to come back,” Director Terry Bailey said. “This is our home – it’s where it has always been.”

Bailey, whose father opened the pantry, runs it now with her husband, Bruce.

Bailey said the pantry was bequeathed money over the years when people died that was specifically earmarked for the renovation of the space. When enough money was available, St. Andrew allowed the pantry to renovate the basement space.

Bailey said not one dime of money that has been donated to the pantry over the years to stock the pantry was used for the renovation. It all came from money specifically designated for that purpose in the wills of people who wished to improve the space where the pantry serves the people.

Bailey said she is proud that the pantry was able to continue to serve the people throughout the renovation. That was made possible through the generosity of Town Bank. Bailey asked the bank how much it would charge in rent for a space it owns

next door that used to house a physical therapy business. The bank allowed the pantry to temporarily relocate to that space rent-free. Bailey said she was not even charged for utilities.

“It was a complete blessing,” Bailey said. “It has been a godsend.”

It became even more of a blessing when the original three to four months that was expected to complete the renovations turned into 21 months, and Town Bank never asked for anything.

“I was sure they were going to call and ask if we were squatters,” Bailey joked.

The reason the renovation took longer than planned wouldn’t surprise anyone who has conducted renovation work.

Things often take longer than planned, especially if unforeseen problems arise.

Bailey said the church’s hardwood floor was in such poor condition that nothing could be done to improve it. Once it was decided that it had to be completely replaced, Bailey had to decide what to replace it with. In an effort to select the surface that would last the longest, she chose concrete with a decorative and nonslip coating.

The basement also required tuck pointing and asbestos removal that was unplanned. In addition, Bailey said heavy machinery was used for much of the work, and she did not want to disrupt anything going on in the church. Work in

the basement had to be worked around the schedule of the church. Then the project was ready for the “finishing” contractors during their busiest season, the spring, so that took longer than planned.

Bailey said the space needed to be renovated not just because of how it looked but also because it was unsafe. The stairs that provided access to the pantry and the hardwood floor were not safe or up to code. She said the new concrete floor and stairs with new hand rails will last a long time, which is important because

it might be a long time before any more work is done to the space.

Bailey’s goal has always been to make the pantry look and operate like a grocery store. She said the new space makes it a much cleaner, brighter, safer and better grocery store.

The temporary location worked out very well, Bailey said. One thing the pantry guests liked the best was that there were no stairs to navigate to enter the pantry.

Annual event projected to raise $175,000 in Walworth County

Walworth County showed its support on Saturday as more than 750 participants turned out to support the 12th Annual Walk To End Alzheimer’s at Library Park in Lake Geneva.

The Sept. 15 walk, chaired by Josh Spiegelhoff, owner of Spiegelhoff Insurance, Chris Zegarra, Spiegelhoff Insurance, and Emily Karls, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, East Troy Manor is projected to raise $175,000. Fundraising will continue over the next few months as walkers forward additional donations. This year’s event experienced a 17 percent increase in funds raised over 2017.

“When our family first received my dad’s diagnosis, we were left feeling a range of emotions” Spiegelhoff said. “It’s a devastating diagnosis and when you receive it, you are ushered out of the doctor’s office feeling isolated and lost. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an affirmation that you’re not alone and there are many, many people going through the same emotional process.

We are a community and we are here to support each other while we work on finding a cure.”

Dave Grams, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Wisconsin chapter, said events such as the walk help the Association provide support to those affected.

“None of the victories that we’ve achieved as an organization this year, from providing nearly 39,000 points of service in Southeastern Wisconsin, to speaking up for the needs and rights of those facing the disease, could have happened without grassroots support for the mission,” Grams said. “Thanks to local efforts like this, the Alzheimer’s Association can continue to provide education, care and support services to local residents, and fund promising Alzheimer’s research.”

The annual Wally Phillips Spirit Award was presented this year to two former Walk co-chairs – Sonja Akright of Primex Family of Companies, and Wendy Betley, Alzheimer’s Association.

Even so, the benefits of the new space are numerous.

Bailey said the nonslip surface on the concrete floor and stairs and the non-slip strips on the stairs make the space safer. It is also a cleaner space with more storage capacity that will allow for better rotation of stock. A new conveyor belt that is much longer than the original will allow pantry volunteers to get donations all the way to the storage and preparation area.

The move Sept. 15 went very well, Bailey said. She said Leigh Comas and her husband, Augie, organized a group of 23 student athletes from Delavan-Darien High School to come over that morning, and, in three hours, everything was moved from the temporary space to the renovated space. Bailey said some coaches and parents also helped fill a 26-foot truck she rented twice and move everything into the St. Andrew space.

Bailey said Leigh and Augie Comas were great in organizing the move and in helping make it happen. She said the kids worked hard and earned their community

service hours.

“It was fantastic,” she said.

Bailey said about 15 volunteers come regularly from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Saturdays when the pantry is open. About eight of them helped organize everything during the week after the move in time for the pantry to re-open Saturday.

Bruce Bailey said the mission of the pantry is to serve as a nondenominational Christian organization dedicated to serving the less fortunate.

“We serve the people in need in the community,” Terry Bailey said.

The pantry serves the Delavan and Darien area. No one is turned away without food, but if another pantry is closer to them, the Baileys direct them to that pantry. Patrons must meet federal income guidelines to qualify.

Terry Bailey said donations come from individuals, business, churches and local organizations that have food drives.

Ride for kids raises more than $40K

Local scouts, greater community supports fundraiser Earlier this summer, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s “Ride For The Kids” – a motorcycle charity ride – was held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. The goal of the ride was to raise money to pay for research and help families of children diagnosed with brain tumors, which is the most common form of cancer impacting children and also the deadliest cancer for children.

While the weather was uncooperative in the morning on July 22, motorcyclists were undeterred and showed up in force. Many were local, but others came from as far afield as Nebraska, having ridden hundreds of miles to show their support. The rain ended and the fog was lifting by the time the motorcycles set out on the ride through Elkhorn and surrounding areas assisted by officers from the City of Elkhorn and Walworth County Sheriffs Department.

Local organizers Meghan and Tony Ketchpaw dedicated hours working with the foundation and a dedicated team of volunteers to bring the event to Elkhorn. In total, over $43,000 was raised.

Among the helpers were scouts from Elkhorn’s Troop 243, who served coffee and donuts as riders arrived in the morning. Later, the troop went on to grill brats and burgers for the participants as

well as event staff.

Perhaps the most touching aspect of the ride is that children and teens currently battling cancer were invited to participate, riding in sidecars and on the back of bikes.

Following the ride, there was a presentation followed by the raffle drawing for a brand new Honda motorcycle. Riders and event staff and volunteers enjoyed music by Chapter 1 during lunch.

Many people, businesses and organizations supported the event including Frank’s Piggly Wiggly of Elkhorn, Steinbrink’s Piggly Wiggly of Delavan, Sorg’s Meat of Darien, the Elkhorn Police and Walworth County Sheriffs departments, Honda Motorcycles, Elkhorn Boy Scout Troop 243 and Chapter 1 as well as scores of volunteers, according to organizers.

all began with a Groupon deal, and now 13-year-old Alex Conrady is getting notable attention in the music business.

“I wasn’t always good at singing and remember my parents looking at me when I was younger, like, ‘You’re never going to be a singer.’ Then one day, about a year ago, I was singing ‘Stone Cold’ by Demi Lovato and my mom was like, ‘Why do you sound so good?’” Alex said with a laugh.

Fast-forward a few months when the Conrady family, of Elkhorn, planned to spend spring break in Nashville visiting family. Before the trip, Alex’s mom, Alison, came across a Groupon deal for a studio recording.

That got the ball rolling.

“We ended up meeting Sean, who recorded Alex,” Alison said. “Afterward he called me and said he’d love to mentor her because she had such uniqueness about her voice.”

Sean Giovanni is the owner of The Record Shop, a recording studio and production company in Nashville. He spends most of his time in the studio producing a wide range of major and independent artists, but he also oversees multimedia content creation and artist development.

He has worked with numerous bigname artists, including Tim McGraw, John Legend, Lil Jon, DJ Sinister, Alabama Shakes, Sister Hazel and The Wallflowers.

Giovanni said when Alex, who was 12 at the time, stepped into his studio it was clear from the first note that she had something uniquely special to offer.

“Alex’s confidence and passion in her vocal delivery was outstanding. The more I got to know her, the more that gut feeling was solidified,” he said.

During their first meeting, Alex recorded “Dancing On My Own” by Calum Scott. She shared it on a music app that rates songs according to listeners’ votes and finished with the second-highest

Alex, who said she recently realized she had been writing songs for years, is gearing up to release her first single – “Repaired.”

“It’s about people coming in and out of your life and how eventually you realize who your true friends are,” Alex explained.

“Repaired” will be released in October, including to Milwaukee radio station FM106, which features new songs by local artists during a special segment each night.

It also will be on iTunes and Sound Cloud via the Live Undiscovered Music app, the latter of which Alex is now a brand ambassador.

As a brand ambassador, Alex recently recorded the cover song for the app. She also recorded and shared her own version of “Walk the Line,” which reached No. 1 on LÜM for acoustic artists.

Though getting to the point of releasing a song has been a process, another connection thanks to Alison’s research has made it easier.

“I found Jason Aaron on Craigslist under music listings, and he was looking for someone to sing his songs,” Alison said. “He writes music but needs someone to sing. Now, we go there once a week and he’s also helping her – she writes the words and melody and he puts them to music.”

Aaron recorded Alex for her first single and added the music. Giovanni was then brought into the mix to offer suggestions.

Alex’s second single, “His Angel,” will be released after the holidays.

Learning and growing

In the short time Giovanni has known Alex, he said her identity has grown significantly.

“Since we first met she has been working tirelessly on songwriting, guitar playing and live performance,” he said.

“We’ve been following his advice,” Alison said. “Alex is learning to play guitar – she can already play some songs – and we got her in a band.”

I don’t know what will happen in the future, but right now it’s fun and that’s all that matters.

“We practice once a week; it’s all cover songs. And we perform together at area festivals. It’s me, Maddi (drummer) and Aubrie (guitarist),” Alex said.

In addition to the release of her two singles, Alex plans to perform at open mic events in an effort to increase her stage comfort even more and possibly sing another musician’s songs.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s what she wants to do. And so far we’re able to manage all of it,” Alison said.

Alex said her family has been supportive, but her grandfather is her biggest fan.

Her grandparents, whom the family was visiting in Nashville during spring break, insisted on paying for the recording session at Giovanni’s studio – which they, along with Alex’s parents and brother attended – and bought Alex her guitar.

Area Scout builds park for Eagle project

hen longtime Boy Scout Jake McClorey began looking at ideas for his Eagle Scout project, he knew he wanted to do something to help people enjoy the outdoors.

“I just want to bring the community together and I wanted them to get outside, sit down, read a book and enjoy the beautiful weather,” McClorey said.

Jake’s mom, Jamie McClorey, said she and her son love to walk along the shoreline of Lake Benedict in the Town of Randall/Village of Bloomfield area and he knew he wanted to do his project in that area.

“We walk around the lake every day, and there is a little piece of land on the shoreline of Lake Benedict, owned by the Town of Randall, and Jake wanted to put a little free library there,” Jamie McClorey said.

Because Lake Benedict is in both Walworth and Kenosha counties, Jake needed to get the approval of the Town of Randall to put his little free library park on the open part of shoreline he chose.

“I saw a little free library in Pell Lake and I wanted to do something like that, and on March 22 I went to the Town of Randall and they approved it,” Jake said.

His mother said things sort of snowballed from there.

“They said they were fine with a park and then they wanted to know how they could help,” Jamie recalled. “The board guy said ‘we’re going to donate a park bench’ and another guy said he would donate all the materials you’re going to need. One lady said ‘I’ll donate my husband, he’s an engineer.’”

Jamie also had a friend who is a carpenter who offered to help with construction.

“We even had the artsy guy, a retired janitor from Brookwood Elementary School. I happened to run into him and he asked how Jake was and I told him about the project and we were kind of wondering how everything would look and he said, ‘I can design it,’” Jamie said.

The next step for Jake was to raise funds for the project, which had him making presentations to area organizations, including Genoa City American Legion Post 183, Sons of

American Legion, Village of Bloomfield and the Lake Benedict/Tombeau Lakes Management Association, Jamie said.

“He got enough monetary donations to buy a big nautical flag pole with side arms on an angle, and we were able to purchase nautical flags; each flag is a letter of the alphabet and we purchased BEN and TOM,” Jamie said.

Jake built the free library himself. It is in the shape of a boat, fitting with the theme of Eagle Park, which the project grew into.

“On the second weekend in June we put the box up, and last Friday we installed the flagpole,” Jake said.

Because of the generosity of everyone involved, Jake’s Eagle Scout service project grew into an entire park, which was opened this summer. An official flag raising ceremony took place on July 28.

Professional singer Wayne Messmer volunteered to emcee the flag-raising ceremony and sung the National Anthem.

Jake also received a U.S. flag for the park that was flown over the state Capitol in Jake’s honor from Sen. Steve Nass, acknowledging his efforts on behalf of the community.

“Jake ended up building a free little library box and put up some of those pylons with rope, has the bench and flag pole, all with a nautical theme,” Jamie said. “He got all the landscaping and flowers donated from local businesses.

People just kept stepping up and offering.

“It’s just so touching how many people helped.”

And while all Jake accomplished would be noteworthy under normal circumstances, Jake faces special challenges because he has autism and additional medical issues.

“I’m really proud of him; he went out and got the funds. He wrote a couple letters a night to do this, and for a child who has autism it’s not always the easiest thing to do. But he never let it stop him, never said I can’t do this,” said Patty Meier, Troop committee chairperson for Genoa City Boy Scout Troop 236.

“I’m so proud of him, his mom is so proud of him. He didn’t let his disability stop him and that was neat to see. He really worked hard and did an awesome job,” Meier continued.

For Jake, the completion of his Eagle Scout project is just one step closer to attaining the rank of Eagle in the organization he’s been a part of since he was a grade schooler.

“It’s really hard to get to Eagle and to have autism and other medical issues makes it that much more difficult and bittersweet,” Jamie said.

Star Elkhorn football player back home after life-altering accident

Sitting around their wooden kitchen table, Matt and Hayley Lois are grateful and thankful on a foggy, mild Monday evening.

They allude to acts of God and throw around words like miracle when talking about their son, Michael, 16.

Matt and Hayley are the kind of people who would give the shirt off their backs to a stranger without hesitation. Matt works for the City of Elkhorn and Hayley is a social worker for Walworth County.

It’s this deep-rooted sense of helping others that’s been passed down to Michael, a tall, hulking manchild with the wisdom of someone decades older.

Last month, Michael was having a blast, as he and a few fellow Elkhorn varsity football players visited West Side Elementary school to spend some time with kids who idolized the athletes.

Michael read books and even played basketball against children

who thought he was in the NFL. While that dream still exists for Michael, a 2020 University of Iowa commit, it was drastically altered only a few days after his elementary school visit.

And suddenly, a mom and a dad who dedicate their lives to the service of others needed a level of help they couldn’t imagine.

A tragic Sunday On Sunday, Sept. 16, Michael was hanging out at a friend’s house just north of Elkhorn, roughly 15 minutes from the Lois home, which is off Highway H on the south side of the city.

On a hot and humid day, Lois and friends decided to take a dip in the pool, and they wanted to incorporate a large trampoline.

So they placed the trampoline next to the pool and were going to jump into the pool and land on a raft.

Michael, all 6-foot-4, 260 pounds of him, leapt high into the air and descended upon the 4-foot deep pool.

His plan to land on a raft missed entirely, as his jump forced his body to contort in the air and send his head and shoulders into the water first.

The back of Michael’s head, his neck and shoulder crashed to the pool floor, and he immediately knew something was wrong. He popped back above the water, then quickly sank under again. That’s when Sage Rushing had to pull his friend up to safety.

“Me and Sage jumped two or three times, and the third one got me,” Michael said Monday at his home, wearing a large neck brace. “I was going forward a little too much and missed the floatie, and the back of my head went right to the bottom of the pool.”

“I over-rotated, and as soon as my head hit the bottom, everything stopped and time was slow. I couldn’t move my left leg, so I’m struggling to get my head out of the water, and when I could, I was yelling ‘Help!’ Then, Sage got me to the edge of the pool, and I

was like ‘Dude, I can’t move my arms.’”

Lost feeling in leg Rushing and Ryley Rand lifted Michael out of the pool, and he sat and reclined on his back and complained of severe shoulder pain.

“That was my vertebrae that broke,” Michael said.

“One of the vertebrae had gone under the other one.

The surgeon said the only thing that saved me from snapping my spine was the muscle.”

Michael said his friends had to hold him to walk.

He was leaning on the pool and said he couldn’t feel his left arm or his left leg.

Luckily, Rand’s dad is a former paramedic, and the decision was made to call 911.

“At no point was I ever scared from the moment I got out of the pool to the surgery table,” Michael said.

“I felt like I was going to be taken care of. I definitely think God was with me on that surgery table. The surgeon said I should be in a wheelchair. This was a win for them. Most surgeries like this don’t turn out.”

“I thought, ‘I’m still living, still breathing, it’s definitely going to be something I’m going to have to adjust to. It would be hard, but I’d rather be alive than 6 feet below the grass.”

Confined to a hospital bed Hayley and Michael were home and got the call to rush to Rand’s house, and they dropped everything and hurried out the door.

An ambulance took Michael 20 miles to Waukesha County.

They needed to drive to the nearest trauma center in Oconomowoc, where an X-ray determined Michael had to leave for Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa.

Emergency surgery was necessary at Children’s.

“Throughout the whole thing, not one tear ran down his cheek,” Matt said.

In fact, Michael was so confident, he asked the ambulance workers if they were called in and had to miss the Packers game.

Matt and Hayley, understandably, weren’t so calm.

“The most intimidating thing was when we got to the trauma center at Children’s,” Matt said. “There’s roughly 30 people suited up, waiting for Michael and evaluating and talking and getting a plan together.”

“We are so blessed to have that hospital in our state, and the wonderful people that work there are unbelievable. After six or seven hours of surgery, the doctor finally came out to talk to us. Dr. Foy said he felt really good about what he accomplished with Michael.”

But neurosurgeon Dr. Andrew Foy also explained a complication occurred, and they weren’t sure about Michael regaining use of his right arm.

Dreams are realized Hayley and Matt feared the worst, that there would be some paralysis in his arm, but somehow the same day Michael’s limbs recovered, and the dream of walking again became more possible.

“They were pretty impressed with Michael,” Matt said. “During physical therapy, he worked so hard to the point of passing out from exhaustion and pain.”

For Hayley, who was out on her deck and preparing to make dinner, it was a call she wouldn’t wish on anyone.

“We left everything unlocked and rushed as fast as we could to get to him,” she said. “We ran out the door.

They took good care of him. Ryley and his mom sat next to him until we got there.”

“I was just in shock, your heart sinks. I couldn’t wait to see him.”

“Adrenaline kicks in,” Matt said.

Only one day after surgery on Monday, Michael was ecstatic knowing he could move everything, and he was determined to stand.

Just eight hours after going under the knife thanks to what Michael called a “horse-sized” IV injected into his arm, the teenager was ready to get out of the hospital bed he’d been in for the past three days.

“The nurses and my mom tried to help me stand up,” Michael said. “I was like, ‘No, don’t touch me.’

South Shore Drive ‘bee’-comes pollinator friendly

When the homeowners at 2415 South Shore became interested in becoming “pollinator friendly,” they agreed to try a pesticide-free lawn and garden and add native plantings.

Two years later, they enjoy watching a parade of bumblebees, hummingbirds and butterflies visit the gardens. Living on the lake, they realized the importance of contributing to its health as well as personal health.

Driving the two-mile stretch between Highway 50 and Bailey Road on South Shore Drive, three planned roadside gardens brighten the drive and support many kinds of pollinators including Monarchs and other butterflies to some of the 500 Wisconsin species of bees, along with birds, bats and other small beneficial insects.

The towering Joe Pye weed has selfseeded at another couple locations. It’s a favorite nectar source for migrating Monarchs and as other pollinators.

The ubiquitous rows of orange daylilies, now classified as “invasive” in the state, and hostas are now being joined by the

free-flowering and long-blooming native coneflowers. The former two, Asian natives, provide minimal quality nectar and short bloom times and fail to attract a wide array of beneficial insects.

The Delmar subdivision beach garden has 11 native species so far including a more refined milkweed. While the word is out about the importance of growing milkweed, the only food source for Monarch reproduction, as well as nectar source for many other species, common milkweed’s large size and ability to quickly overtake a small area isn’t practical for most small gardens. Less known are the other 13 Wisconsin milkweed species, which are more garden friendly for smaller lots and play better with other pollen and nectar neighbors.

When Monarchs emerge from their chrysalis, a native plant nectar source must be available, and milkweed will no longer produce flowers as summer progresses.

Native asters and goldenrod (often blamed for causing hayfever while ragweed is the real culprit) are the most valuable food sources for all kinds of pollinators in late summer, along with Monarchs. Seasonal native plants are the only reliable food source for Monarchs as well as all other

pollinators including hummingbirds.

Without appropriate and adequate food sources as they emerge, Monarchs will have challenging start on their 1,000-plus-mile journey to Mexico.

Residents can help the process by starting a 3- by 5-foot plot with bloom times spanning spring, summer and fall with three of each species grouped together, four species including one short milkweed variety and a couple short native grasses. A sunny site is best for most summer and fall varieties. Online catalogs can provide plant descriptions and care from Agrecol, Prairie Nursery, Prairie Moon and Morning Sky Greenery. Agrecol has an instant garden – a 40 inch by 11 foot mat already planted with native wildflowers and grasses. Users clean off any green plants, scrape it, lay the mat on top and water.

Two blocks from South Shore Drive at the corner of Sutter Avenue and King Street is a 4,000-square-foot pollinator-friendly garden with more than 150 native species and specimen flowers, vines, shrubs and trees that can help aspiring gardeners determine what might work for adding to their own gardens. provide personal tours and resources and might even offer free plants to a good home.

Wild Ones at www.wildones.org provides information for creating and learning about native habitats. Pollinator’s Partnership at pollinator.org is a worldwide organization with resources, downloadable pamphlets and posters as is Xerces Society at xerces.org.

Another resource is Mariette Nowak, a Walworth County resident, expert on native plants, birds and natural environments and author of “Birdscaping in the Midwest.”

The book covers every facet of the natural landscaping movement and attracting the birds as well as pollinators.

The hardy plants flourish and grow together with no need for extra watering, weeding, fertilizer or chemicals once established. Ninety-six percent of terrestrial birds require insects to raise their young, not seeds from a feeder.

own, like tying my shoes and putting my socks on. I said I’m going to do this by myself.”

“A lot of people came to watch,” Matt added. “They just thought it was early in the process for standing up.”

Less than 72 hours from breaking three vertebrae in his neck and a seismic shift in his spinal cord, Michael Lois could stand.

And it wasn’t long before he was walking.

By the next Wednesday, occupational and physical therapy began, and it started with baby steps. Michael’s left hand could only go from a fist halfway to being completely open, and it was in the shape of the letter ‘C.’ And while the left hand still had nerve damage, but he made huge strides.

“Therapy definitely helped,” Michael said.

“Just eating. The fork, the food’s coming off and you’re shaking trying to get it into your mouth. There were a lot of ‘Let me do it’s’ that week.”

Finding inspiration The life-changing ordeal has opened Michael’s eyes, he said.

He said the story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy Seal in Afghanistan in 2005 that survived a Taliban attack but broke his back and crawled seven miles to safety, inspired him to keep fighting.

Then, while at lunch at Someplace Else in Elkhorn with his family, he noticed another sign that hit home.

A veteran was eating beside the Lois’ table, and Michael thanked him for his service.

On the back of the man’s jacket, it read, “Every day is a bonus.”

“I thought that was a surreal moment, it definitely hit home,” Michael said. “It made me appreciate life more.”

“At Children’s, we would go down the hallways and I would see the people in those other beds. It was hard not to shed a tear. I never felt sorry for myself after seeing those bedrooms. I just wanted to keep fighting and get out of that bed. It was hard work, not giving up.”

“He’s been so strong,” Matt said of Michael.

A homemade “Welcome Home” poster awaited Michael, and it was a weekend of reconnecting with family and friends.

After two surgeries and countless hours in a hospital bed, Michael gets outside on his deck as much as possible.

University of Iowa swag litters the front yard, deck and inside of the home, and Iowa football coaches have been in constant contact with the family.

During the interview at the Lois home, Matt returned a text to an Iowa coach.

“What helped keep us strong was Michael’s strength, enduring the pain and the therapy,” Matt said. “You could just feed off his energy, and it really humbled us.”

Hayley said while Michael was growing up he wanted to play football or become a Navy SEAL. “I’ve always respected veterans, and Marcus Luttrell has always been my idol,”

Michael said. “He had to crawl under rocks with no pants on to avoid the Taliban. If he can do that, I could get out of the hospital no problem. That’s why I did it in less than a week. That was my motivation.”

What the future holds In terms of his football future, Matt said it’s more about the right decision for Michael no matter what. Michael’s dream is to play again. He even told the crew in the ambulance he had a game Friday and he wanted to play.

They told him, “You’re going to have to sit this one out.”

Michael and his family were able to watch a live stream of the football game between Elkhorn and Waterford. He was proud of how hard his teammates played for him.

Michael said people from the Southern Lakes Conference community and even fans from Iowa have sent cards, flowers, posters and positive messages.

“I felt like I let everyone down, but then

I see these messages and I wanted to do this for every single one of you,” Michael said.

Hayley and Matt said his teammates and other Elkhorn students flooded the hospital to visit.

Even kids from other teams, like Burlington’s Isaac Reda, messaged Michael on Instagram in support.

“People I don’t even know – it’s insane.

It’s helped me get through this.”

The house was in good hands, as Hayley’s two sisters and mom took care of the family’s dog and cat and did laundry.

“We’ve both spent our careers serving the community and trying to make people’s lives better,” Matt said. “I would’ve never thought I’d ever see the day I needed help.

I’ve always been a strong guy and wanted to help others. We’ve always been the people to show up at fundraisers.”

“My pride was in the way for a while.

You just become humbled by the people you meet and the community. You just know it’s happening, they’re here to help you and there’s a reason God is sending them. I couldn’t be more appreciative of the city and the cities around us.”

You get what you give Hayley started a Football Moms Club this year, and it led to Michael and his teammates giving back at a local elementary school.

“Playing basketball with them was like “Billy Madison,” and I was just slamdunking on them,” Michael said.

Hayley also helped a little boy who lost his arm in a car accident earlier this year, thanks to fundraising. Michael and teammates helped out.

“You get what you give,” Michael said.

“I’m glad I helped him. It’s people like him that helped me back. People definitely gave me a lot. I want to do everything I can to give back.”

For now, Michael will continue to wake up each morning, take his nerve medication and pain killers, anything but opioids, and keep working to improve.
