he year 2020 brought about a series of changes, from the COVID-19 pandemic to divisive politics, but residents and schools in Western Kenosha County did what they could amid a challenging year.

While the start beamed with promise, noting a strong economy and optimism, the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt and caused traditional events such as the Kenosha County Fair to cancel and schools to shut down to mitigate virus spread.

Meanwhile, on the east end of Kenosha County, an officer-involved shooting of a Black man raised tensions.

However, west of Interstate 94, a small business attempted to spread hope along Highway 50 and both high schools overcame challenges.

While most schools postponed, or canceled in-person commencements, Westosha Central High School allowed

seniors to graduate with their peers on a hot July Sunday outdoors and Wilmot held a parade for the newly minted graduates.

As traditional events such as the County Fair and Kenosha County Dairy Breakfast canceled, both expressed hope, which is to see visitors once again in 2021.

But, there was a silver lining, which was showcasing Kenosha County Parks as a way for people to enjoy nature and exercise outdoors under social distancing guidelines.

In Western Kenosha County, there are many options for people to hike and run, including Silver Lake Park and Fox River Park.

Additionally, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources encouraged residents to use recreation areas such as Richard Bong State Recreation Area, where people can explore miles of hiking trails.

That is not all, however, as Wilmot Mountain ski hill opened for the season and

allowed winter sports enthusiasts to hit the slopes.

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, law enforcement agencies, including the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, still continued to serve the community and one deputy even saved a life at Hooker Lake in 2020.

The Twin Lakes Police Department, which brings in nearly two-dozen children for Shop with a Hero at Christmas, modified the annual event and still delivered gifts instead of the traditional trip to Walmart.

As of this writing, the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, but glimmers of hope emerge as vaccine distribution continues to progress towards a return to a normal way of life for Kenosha County residents and beyond.

This annual edition is packed with vital community information.

by Jason Bakeshop, of Paddock Lake, Arndt just wanted to spread some EDITOR love amid challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and divisiveness within society.

Spreading love - and encouragement comes from a mural motorists see as they travel westbound on Highway 50 heading into Paddock Lake.

“Love is contagious,” the inspirational message states in bright colors with a black backdrop.

Maria Veith, owner of Cozzi Cafe and Bakeshop, said the message comes courtesy of artist Heather Gentile Collins.

“We just thought that it was the perfect message for right now,” Maria Veith said.

“I think a lot of people in these crazy times could use a reminder to spread love instead of what else is going on.”

On Cozzi’s Facebook page, the message brought joy among customers and motorists alike, with some stating “I notice it everyday on my way to daycare and it makes me so happy.”

Another customer, meanwhile, said the mural gives her something to look forward to when she visits Paddock Lake.

BRINGS HOPE

“What an awesome addition!! Can’t wait to see it in person with my Mom!” The customer feedback, according to Maria Veith, is precisely what Cozzi Cafe wanted to bring to the community.

“We just wanted something positive and encouraging,” she said.

Early vision

Sam Veith, Maria’s husband, envisioned turning an ugly storage shed next to the bakery into a beautiful mural since his wife assumed the business within the last few years.

“I had this idea to turn our ugly garage into something beautiful for a few years,” he said.

He said the idea intensified as the area, state and nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left some people isolated, and reached out to Collins about the mural.

While the Veiths started with the word ‘love,’ Collins expanded on the inspirational message, according to Maria.

Maria said Collins decided on “Love is Contagious” after receiving ideas from other artists and went to work on the mural.

“It is already getting a good buzz, which is exactly what we wanted,” she said.

Collins wrote on her Instagram feed the Veiths felt compelled to bring joy to the community.

Additionally, according to Collins, the project allowed her more time to experience a pleasant summer.

“The owners Sam and Maria just said they wanted something to lift people’s spirits in their town,” she wrote. “They gave me total creative license. I’m so grateful to be doing what I’m doing this summer outside in the fresh air.

Community asset

Sam sees the mural as an asset and hopes it will encourage people to visit Paddock Lake and even use Spencer Field, which is located next to Cozzi Cafe, where a baseball diamond sits.

“It is just beautiful thing that we can offer to the community, and hopefully people can use the park a little bit more, and they can enjoy the mural,” he said.

Deputy rescues Salem Lakes man found in frigid water

by Jason Kenosha County Sheriff’s Arndt deputy Colin Coultrip knew he had to dive into a frozen EDITOR pond when he first responded to a call east of Hooker Lake near 236th Avenue and 80th Place to rescue a man submerged in the water.

Coultrip, in late December, was the first of six deputies who answered the call shortly before 5 p.m. from a resident indicating a 57-year-old Salem Lakes ice fisherman fell through the ice.

“I knew every second counts when it is cold,” Coultrip, a five-year member of the department, said during news conference at the time. “Every second counted when he

had already been in for 20 minutes.”

When he first arrived, a neighbor reportedly told Coultrip the man had been in the water for that long, and the deputy sprung to action.

Coultrip used a canoe he found at a nearby residence and moved 75 yards off shore to man on the ice, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

Coultrip told reporters he used his hands to maneuver the canoe closer to the man instead of paddles. He said paddles would be of minimal help due to the icy conditions.

The canoe, however, broke through the ice and Coultrip maneuvered it to the man and pulled him on board.

“Getting the man into the canoe took extraordinary effort as the struggle in the cold water had left him nearly helpless and exhausted,” Sheriff’s Lt. Eric Klinkhammer said in a news release.

Coultrip, meanwhile, attempted to bring himself and the man back to shore.

But the Salem Lakes man, who may have been experiencing panic, then stood up on the canoe and fell through the ice a second time with Coultrip.

“Once we were in the canoe finally and we were all out of the water, the gentleman starts to relax, realized the gravity of the situation and attempted to standup in the canoe,” Coultrip said. “Once you stand up in a canoe, you are not taking care of your balance and you’re most likely to go over and that is what he did.”

Coultrip eventually pulled himself up onto the ice and turned back around and went to the man a second time.

The Sheriff’s Department said Coultrip instructed man, who appeared more panicked than the first time, according to a news release.

“In looking at him, I got his attention again and got him to calm down,” said Coultrip.

The Salem Lakes man, meanwhile, pushed himself on the ice until authorities from the Salem Lakes Fire Department arrived and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

“Deputy Coultrip directed (Salem Lakes firefighters) to rescue the male first,” Klinkhammer said in a news release.

“Coultrip crawled off the ice, cold, tired and wet.”

Authorities said the Salem Lakes man, who was ice fishing, is expected to make a full recovery.

Coultrip, meanwhile, did not experience any injuries and went back on duty after he showered and changed clothes.

“We can’t say how proud we are about what he did. He risked his life,” Klinkhammer said in a late news conference.

Thin ice Authorities said the incident served as a reminder to residents about safety on the ice.

Currently, the ice is unstable, and could put anglers and first responders at risk.

“The Sheriff’s Department and local first responders would like to remind everyone that none of the ice in Kenosha County is safe for any outdoor activities,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

“Stay off the ice – it is not safe.”

Coultrip, who grew up in the Village of Bristol near a lake, told reporters the pond’s depth is about six feet deep.

Additionally, he estimates ice thickness of no more than three inches, which is far from safe for ice fishing.

“On shore, maybe an inch, out where he was, maybe two to three inches at best,” said Coultrip.

Shop with a Hero hits the road

Officials from the Twin Lakes Police Department, Twin Lakes Fire Department and Rescue Squad as well as the Town of Randall Fire Department gathered together and delivered gifts to children selected for the annual Shop with a Hero in midDecember.

Annually, Shop with a Hero typically happens at the Walmart in Lake Geneva, where officials from all three departments help children with in-person Christmas shopping.

However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the three departments decided to modify its annual event and went door-todoor with the gifts.

“We still wanted to be able to have the event somehow, someway,” the Village Police Department wrote on its Facebook page at the time.

The 20 children, 10 from Lakewood and 10 from Randall Consolidated School, child selected items through Amazon and sent their wish lists to Twin Lakes police officer Kevin Saunders.

The gifts were then ordered and shipped to the Twin Lakes Police Department for gift wrapping.

Officials delivered gifts either by police car, fire truck or ambulance to children’s homes.

Downtown Twin Lakes was packed with vehicles from multiple eras last August when the Twin Lakes Area Chamber and Business Association, Inc. hosted its annual Business in the Park and Car Show.

The annual event has grown in recent years, according to a Chamber member, who said the activities brought in 150 cars and saw vendor participation increase from a year earlier.

Chris Brown, owner of Slades Corners Computer Repair, LCC, serves as Chamber chairman.

Brown reported 53 car owners participated in 2019 before seeing numbers triple in 2020.

While he was surprised at the relative turnout, the Chamber’s outreach efforts have played a role in the influx, noting volunteers have ramped up marketing initiatives.

“We have been going to other car shows throughout the year and advertising it,” he said. “We pushed it on Facebook and added signage (around the area).”

Previously, the Chamber promoted the event suitable for people of all ages, including children.

“Business in the Park is a free, fun, family event,” the Chamber said, adding families and visitors have many options.

Brown, meanwhile, said pleasant weather also contributed to the increase.

As for vendors, according to the Chamber, they had an opportunity to showcase their business and bolster community connections.

“Business in the Park is a one day event to give you an opportunity to showcase your business and network with the community and other businesses,” the Chamber said in its marketing effort.

Along with cars, trucks and motorcycles from different eras, as well as vendor booths, the Chamber of Commerce served food such as hot dogs, brats and snacks.

Visitors and vendors also contributed to the Twin Lakes Food Pantry and the Sharing Center, of Trevor, through distribution bins placed at the event.

Contributions include school supplies such as pens, paper, markers, glue, backpacks and clothing.

With schools closed last spring, athletic competitions canceled and commencement exercises altered, the Class of 2020 only hoped to salvage some traditions.

Jordan Dahlberg, however, and other senior class officers at Westosha Central High School remained in positive spirits last year.

Dahlberg, the Senior Class President, encouraged her classmates to persevere amid the challenges they encountered when schools shut down in March 2020.

“As a senior class president, something I would want to say to my classmates at this difficult time would be that this is only going to make us stronger,” she said at the time of this interview. “We are going to appreciate the good moments a little more and laugh a little harder than any other class.”

Serritella, meanwhile, discovered some advantages to virtual learning such as completing coursework earlier.

“I am able to work at my own pace, so I can get things done earlier than I would in school,” she said. “However, it is challenging not being able to see any of my friends or teachers, especially in the last few months of my senior year. I learn better when I am around them.”

Filling the void Serritella, without having her classmates nearby, continued contacting them by phone and engaged in online games with her friends at the time of this interview.

“I have been calling my friends a lot to fill my free times. We try to find games that we can play online together,” said Serritella, who played tennis and volleyball at Westosha Central.

“My family has also been taking a lot of walks/bike rides around our neighborhood.

My brother and I have even fixed our old Wii and we have been playing a lot of ‘Just Dance.”

For Dalhberg, a soccer player and cross country athlete, she found joy in running and used her free time to fill out scholarship applications.

“I also have had so much time to apply for scholarships and get prepared for college. I was getting nervous when we were at school that I was going to not have time to apply, so this has been a blessing in disguise.”

Meanwhile, since graduation, which the school conducted outdoors, the two seniors began attending out-of-state schools.

Dahlberg moved on to the University of Iowa while Serritella attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Long-time naturalist retiring from state park DEPARTURE CREATES UNCERTAINTY FOR FUTURE PROGRAMMING AT BONG Frequent visitors to Richard by Jason Arndt Bong State Recreation Area likely encountered naturalist EDITOR Beth Goeppinger through her 28-year tenure.

Goeppinger’s tenure, however, came to an end in early January as she plannned to retire and the Department of Natural Resources does not plan on hiring a permanent replacement.

According to a DNR news release, while it will not hire a full-time staff member, discussions have begun to add a part-time naturalist. The state recreation area is at 26313 Burlington Rd. (Highway 142), Kansasville.

Goeppinger, who has guided many programs for children, played witness to multiple projects such as the Bong Nature Explore Classroom in her nearly three decades at the helm.

She said she enjoyed her 28 years at Bong and added that it is difficult to pinpoint a favorite project.

“I’m so very proud of what has gone on and is going on at the park, but I think I’m going to have pick the Nature Explore Classroom as my most memorable. It’s a place for all people to connect to nature in a fun way,” Goeppinger said at the time.

“It was an amazing experience to see how to dedicated staff, volunteers and other community members put their time, hearts, and efforts into creating it.”

Uncertain future Goeppinger’s departure creates some uncertainty for the future of naturalist programs and events at Richard Bong State Recreation Area.

Among the popular programs is the Knee-High Naturalist. The program for children 3 to 5 years old with a parent offers environmental education through stories, crafts hiking and playing outdoors.

“Because of COVID-19, naturalist programs and events have been canceled through April of 2021, although it is unlikely there will be summer programs either,” the DNR said in the news release. “It is also unlikely that guided school field trips will be held at this property for quite some time.”

However, the release indicated other staff members have been working diligently to delegate tasks and responsibilities as much possible, ensuring naturalist offerings “do not fall through the cracks.”

Volunteers credited Bong Naturalist Association, the nonprofit arm of the State Recreation Area, has encouraged volunteers to contribute their talents at the Town of Brighton park.

The nonprofit group promotes conservation, educational, interpretive and recreational goals of Richard Bong State Recreation Area.

Bong Naturalist Association, incorporated in 1994, partners with park staff members to

enhance and protect natural resources.

“All of our activities and money raised are used to benefit Richard Bong State Recreation Area and its visitors,” the nonprofit website states.

The Bong Naturalist Association activities include restoration of the wildlife refuge and the lake, constructing a wildlife viewing platform, helping fund staff salary, building the Nature Explore Classroom, helping build an accessible cabin, hosting special events, presenting nature programs and hikes, among others.

“We thank everyone who has supported the naturalist programming at the park in the past and we hope you continue to do so in the future.”

Maintaining a presence Goeppinger, meanwhile, will continue as a volunteer to help with frog surveys, the butterfly survey and to complete the Nature Explore Classroom.

For the retiring naturalist, there was never a dull moment, she said, noting she enjoyed the diverse offerings.

“I loved the variety. I was able to do so many interesting and varied projects, programs and tasks,” she said. “I was lucky to meet interesting and a wonderful variety of people.”
