A

nnual events, two high schools with state accolades and a flourishing parks system are just some of the assets Western Kenosha County possesses.

With these assets, among others, residents should be proud of their community.

Some of the qualities have been highlighted in this annual Our Town edition, produced by the Report Group, which spent time poring through hundreds of items within the last year.

This annual edition is packed with vital community information.

Starting with annual activities, each community offers countless events, which foster cohesiveness among residents.

Community volunteers and organizations make these annual events a rousing success.

At the high schools, both touted state achievements, including the Westosha Central High School cheerleading squad.

By the conclusion of 2017, the Falcon cheerleaders had garnered three consecutive Southern Lakes Conference titles while collecting championships at the state level in the process.

For Wilmot Union High School, the school has a dynasty of its own in the academic decathlon, which it has won the state title four years in row.

Also in Panther country, the softball team had an improbable run to the state title game in Madison a year ago.

Without the support of the community, including strong families, none of these achievements would have been possible.

Meanwhile, in the sizzling summer months, the Village of Twin Lakes features the nationally known Aquanuts, who take to Lake Mary, where they entertain the crowds with a ski show.

Looking ahead, the Report will continue to make a concerted effort to highlight community events, residents and give welldeserved acknowledgments to students in the classroom.

Wilmot Union High School earns fourth straight state title

A

lthough the

BY Jason Wilmot Union Arndt High School academic EDITOR decathlon team lost a bulk of its squad from 2016, when the decathletes captured their third consecutive state title, it still garnered a fourth straight last year.

An academic decathlon is a competition composed of 10 categories: art, economics, essay, interview, literature, math, music, science, speech and social science.

The fourth straight, according to coach Don Serkowski, came after an unprecedented comeback.

The team’s comeback started at a local competition, where the decathletes finished fourth, trailing first place by 3,200 points.

Wilmot, however, rose to second place after the regional contest held at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to trim its deficit to 2,300 points behind top-ranked Watertown.

Additionally, the Wilmot academic decathlon had three members, including Kostrova, earn all-state recognition.

Then-junior Isaac Bruley, the other returner, along with then-senior Samantha Steiner were the other two.

Meanwhile, other contributors were Rachel Kostrova, Emily Heckel, Ambriel Siggeman, Kylie Henderson, Claire Vozel and Sean O’Dowd.

Kyle Kostrova said the two freshmen, Vozel and O’Dowd, offered crucial points during the Super Quiz to keep the team in contention.

“They just brought the team up and gave us that chance to win,” he said.

Vozel became the first freshman in school history to achieve a medal in state competition.

As of last year, Wilmot qualified for 13 straight state appearances.

In the last four years, on the national stage, Wilmot won back-to-back national titles.

produced a successful defense of its state title, collecting 23 individual medals and grew by 3,500 points.

Kyle Kostrova, one of two returners on the nine-member squad, said the comeback shows the dedication his team had.

“We wanted to make sure we got as much information as possible in that short amount of time,” said Kostrova, who graduated in 2017. “Not only that, everyone did their best here, they did their best at home, they studied like crazy.”

Serkowski, who agreed, added the team exhibited tremendous development as the season progressed.

The project began by removing all the furniture in the restaurant to allow the restoration company to come in and drain the basement. Everything then needed to be cleaned and disinfected both downstairs and upstairs.

Regular customers will notice a new look in the restaurant. The walls are all painted gray, the popular color of the day. New decorative hangings adorn the walls in the various rooms.

“Everything has a new, cleaner and fresher look,” De Luisa said.

The restaurant reopens

The restaurant closed on July 13 and nothing could be done for the first two weeks because the water level was just too high.

The restaurant was finally able to reopen on Oct. 11 after months of hard work.

De Luisa admitted that he was a little concerned that the business would lose some of its regular customers. After all, three months is a long time to go without a pizza or Italian food.

When the doors officially opened on Oct. 11, De Luisa was surprised to see many friendly faces arriving to again enjoy the restaurant’s pizza and other dishes.

“Actually we did twice as much business that first day

as we would have normally expected on a weekday night,” De Luisa said. “The large crowds continued for the first three nights with the business doing three times the expected business on the third night.”

“I am really thankful to our customers, who I consider to be friends, for sticking with us through this terrible time,” De Luisa added.

So why has Luisa’s been so successful and able to continue to attract new customers?

“Combine the fine service provided by the staff with great food put together with love to make a great pizza and everyone is happy,” De Luisa said.

The bar has taken on a new, warm look. “The back of the chimney from the fireplace was covered with drywall. When we were redoing the bar room, the drywall came down and the warm, brick chimney gave the bar a new look,” De Luisa said.

A life in pizza

“I began working with pizza when I was just 12 years of age,” De Luisa said. “After working in the business for about 13 years, I decided it was time to go out on my own.”

The Aquanuts garnered the best ballet line, courtesy of contributions from 26 women, according to an organization press release.

Koehler, meanwhile, came away with her third Jennifer Dibble-Woods/Michelle Cook Award for most outstanding female skier.

Koehler contributed as a barefoot skier, swivel ski and climbed pyramids for the Aquanuts.

Koehler remained humbled by her achievements.

“It feels great and it’s an honor to receive the award,” said Koehler.

As Koehler added another piece of hardware to her large collection of ski achievements, Grace Gurda notched a top three swivel ski performance for the first time in her Aquanuts career.

Gurda, who finished second, did not anticipate the honor after she placed 11th last year.

“I was not expecting it. It was a great

feeling knowing my hard work paid off,” Gurda said.

The hard work came with a new set of challenges during the weeks when lakes Mary and Elizabeth were under a slow nowake order after recent floods, causing the Aquanuts to postpone multiple ski shows.

“For the last two weeks, I have had to drive an hour to practice, the biggest challenge for me was to practice,” Gurda said at the time.

Koehler believes Gurda has the skills to succeed in swivel skiing.

“Grace is definitely up and coming,” Koehler said.

For the two women, their accomplishments were well-deserved, according to Shulda.

“Kailey and Grace did unbelievable, Kailey definitely deserved the best water skier award and Grace definitely deserved the swivel ski finish.”

The Aquanut Water Ski Show team performs a free 6 p.m. show every Wednesday and Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Lance Park in the Village of Twin Lakes.

ntering the 51st annual Wisconsin State EDITOR Water Ski Show Championships last July, all Twin Lakes’ Ethan Shulda wanted to do was to have fun for Aquanut Water Ski Show team.

Shulda’s fun, combined with his reported enthusiasm, led to his second consecutive Outstanding Trick Ski Award and a second place finish for freestyle jump.

“Winning the best trick ski was just unbelievable,” said Shulda, 16, of Twin Lakes. “I just know that I am coming up on my brother, he won it three times.”

According to Shulda, whose brother is Jordan, he entered the tournament relaxed and ready to leap.

“For just trick ski, I just wanted to go out there and have fun,” said Shulda, who attends Wilmot Union High School.

Shulda’s trick ski award came as no surprise to teammate Kailey Koehler, who noted Shulda’s strong work ethic.

An Independence Day extravaganza Every year, nearly 2,000 people converge on Lance Park for Libertyfest to celebrate Independence Day. Libertyfest, organized by the Twin Lakes Chamber and Business Association, has been in existence for at least 30 years.

Those in attendance enjoy a parade, live music, children’s activities and a water ski show delivered by the hometown Twin Lakes Aquanuts.

In 2017, the parade brought in the largest crowd ever, according to Chamber Executive Director Marilyn Trongeau.

Children’s activities vary on an annual basis, but last year, Libertyfest organizers brought in a bungee jump exhibit along with Sea Hamster balls.

The Duck Races, assisted by the Town of Randall Fire Department.

While the community comes together, area vendors set up shop, offering an assortment of savory foods for those in attendance.

The best part? There is no admission fee.

The event is typically held the weekend surrounding July 4.

Representatives of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department color guard showcase the flags in last year’s Libertyfest parade in Twin Lakes.

Resilient Panthers finish as state runner-up Entering the 2017 softball season, Wilmot Union High School went five years without a WIAA Division 1 state tournament, but the Lady Panthers mission to accomplish their “Unfinished Business” motto ended the drought on June 1.

The Panthers continued their winning ways at Goodman Diamond on the University of Wisconsin campus, where they defeated Germantown in the quarterfinal followed by a 2-1 nail biting victory against Oak Creek to move to the state final.

Although Wilmot lost to Kaukauna, 3-1, the Panthers showed resilience all season, where they finished 25-4 overall and garnered four all-state honorees.

Receiving first team all-state honors were Kalyssa Koehn and Riley Regnier.

“Kids nowadays want to do more things on their iPhones and iPods. It is tough to get them out of the house. When we first started playing this, they were into it for the social aspect,” Andrew said.

Although the children don’t play often, Amanda reports some of them tag along at the disc golf courses, including Fox River Park and Silver Lake Park in Western Kenosha County.

“Even if they don’t want to necessarily throw, they can come out and walk the course, maybe climb a tree,” Amanda said.

“It is nice to get out with nature and not have them on their cellphones or on video games all day long.”

Open to anyone

According to Amanda, disc golf is allinclusive and not just for the college crowd or men.

Although Amanda reports not enough women play, she felt encouraged the more she practiced on the course.

Fox River Park and Silver Lake Park, which have a collective 45 holes, are free and open to the public.

“Most of these courses are free to play,” said Andrew, noting some Milwaukee-area courses charge a fee.

“Here in Kenosha County, these are all county funded. The Kenosha County Parks Department has the best group of guys as far as maintaining any park. What we have in our backyard is an absolute gem and wish that more people knew about it,” he continued.

Sport prospers in Walworth County

While the Jarveys spend most of their time on courses in Kenosha County, including the University of WisconsinParkside, they also play on the White River Disc Golf Course in Lake Geneva.
