Fair skies ahead

WALWORTH COUNTY FAIR CELEBRATES 170TH BIRTHDAY The 170th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept.

2.

The annual festival puts the spotlight on agriculture in the area and gives the county’s youth a chance to shine. Often local 4-H members, the youth raise and show animals along with competing in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food.

The festival is the largest county fair in the state and is a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds.

The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state.

Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more.

Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for Sunday, Sept.

For the kids The family friendly festival offers boatloads of fun for free on the fairgrounds.

Kids of all ages can enjoy touring the barns and buildings, live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s Kid Show,

Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more.

The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm.

Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden.

The fair’s Barnyard Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country.

The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the Pony Rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair.

The Barnyard Adventure Tent has hands-on activities for the kids, including a corn and soybean bin, honeybee display, canning demonstration, classes on hydroponics and cloning, and other educational activities.

Barnyard Adventure requires the help of about 25 to 30 volunteers to guide the children and their families through the various stations of “From Seed to Supper.”

The job of the volunteer is to help the little farmers maximize their experience by making sure that each simple step is completed.

Butterfly Barn Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn

as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod.

The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies.

Around May, the Walworth County Fair receives a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. Dozens of adult butterflies also are ordered; so there will be plenty in the barn during fair week.

Special attractions Headlining at the fair this year are country band Home Free on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. The Newsboys were scheduled for the fair in 2018, but severe weather cancelled the concert.

The Grandstand is also where you’ll find the Flat Track Motorcycle Races, truck and tractor pulls, monster trucks, horse events and the demo derby.

Musical acts also perform for free on the fairgrounds at the Park Stage and other locations.

Who’s the Fairest of the Fair?

Five vie for royal title at 170th Walworth County Fair

ive local young women are competing for the honor of being the 2020 Walworth County Fairest of the Fair. Lillie Cauffman, Audrey Earle, Katelyn Golly, Katelyn Gonzalez and Jessica Nehs have all thrown their hats into the ring to serve as the fair ambassador next year.

The newest Fairest of the Fair will reign from January 2020 to January 2021.

The crowning ceremony will be after the Fairest of the Fair finals at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Park Stage.

The Fairest of the Fair spends her term representing the fair and county at various community events, including the County Fair. She will also compete in the state Fairest of the Fair competition in January 2021.

The Fairest will receive a $1,500 scholarship and the remaining fair royalty each receive a $750 scholarship.

This year’s contestants are:

Lillie Cauffman Lillie Cauffman, 19, of Elkhorn, is the daughter of Caroline Cornelison and Todd Cauffman.

Cauffman graduated from Elkhorn Area High School in June. At school she was on the girls swim team, earning a varsity letter; track team, earning and athletic letter; a participant in AVID, member of SkillsUSA; member of Community Impact; and took fourth place at a state public speaking contest for SkillsUSA. Cauffman works at the Walworth County Visitor’s Bureau providing customer service and promoting the county.

In her application for the Fairest of the Fair, Cauffman wrote about her volunteer work with 4-H, school, local animal shelter, homeless shelters, wildlife rescue center, library and more.

“During the fair the volunteering does not stop. I volunteer in the Barnyard Adventure, Farm Bureau Ice Cream Stand, pre-fair judging and 4-H youth building

supervision,” she wrote.

Cauffman has also garnered multiple 4-H awards over the years, including Walworth County 4-H Youth of the Year and the county 4-H Intermediate Leadership Achievement.

Cauffman is looking at attending either Ohio State or Alabama University to study nursing with an emphasis in neonatal care.

“My favorite part of the fair is seeing all the people walking around the fair smiling and enjoying the wonderful presentation put together by youth, exhibitors and employees of the fair,” Cauffman said.

Audrey Earle Audrey Earle, 22, of East Troy, is the daughter of Robert and Susan Earle.

She graduated from Elkhorn Area High School in 2016 and is enrolled at Gateway Technical College after studying for two and a half years at Illinois College.

At Illinois College, she worked in the Orchid Recovery Program as a lab technician, was on the varsity swim team and served as a student ambassador.

She was also a member of HOSA (an encouragement club for future health care workers) and the Pine Ridge Reservation Breakaway and Cuban Breakaway.

Additionally, she was a Starhill Forest summer intern.

Earle works at Your Personal Gardner as a snow and landscape technician and job-site photographer.

Earle has volunteered with 4-H for 12 years cleaning the roadside and helping out with Memorial Day services. She also volunteered at the Illinois College Day of Service.

Earle hopes to obtain an arboriculture/ urban forestry degree from Gateway Technical Collage and to work as a state certified arborist.

“My favorite part of the fair is the food!” Earle said. “On a more serious note, I enjoy seeing the excitement on peoples’ faces. The dedication some 4-Hers and FFA members have toward their projects.

Lastly, all the hard work that everyone brings forward for the best week of the summer.”

Katelyn Golly Katelyn Golly, 20, of Elkhorn, is the daughter of Valerie Etzel and Mark Golly.

She is a 2018 graduate of Elkhorn Area High School and is enrolled at Carroll University, expecting to graduate in 2021.

In high school she was served as the president and treasurer of the Key Club and president of the Lakeland 4-H Club.

Golly works at MK US Cellular as a retail wireless consultant.

Her volunteer work includes helping out at the Lakeland Animal Shelter. In the Key Club she volunteered with VIP, military and made sandwiches for the police and fire departments. “(In) 4-H we did a lot for the locals, we would plant flowers, help out the dairy farmers, make things for the nursing home,” Golly wrote in her application.

She earned leadership awards in Key Club and sports and was named an MVP in sports.

She plans on finishing college a year early and going to law school to become a lawyer for Walworth County and eventually the district attorney.

“There’s so much to love about the county fair from the food to the people, but my favorite part is the showing,” she said.

“After months and months of getting ready, we have the chance to show off everything we’ve worked for. We get rewarded for the work we’ve done and even if you don’t win you’re still enjoying yourself because you’re with the best people to be around.”

Katelyn Gonzalez Katelyn Gonzalez, 22, of Delavan, is the daughter of Nieves and Sharon Gonzalez.

She is a 2016 graduate of DelavanDarien High School and is attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a major in education and a minor in mathematics.

In high school she graduated in the top 10 in her class and has been on the Dean’s List, Eta Phi Alpha Honors Society and School of Education inductee in college.

She was a member of her high school swim team, softball team, wrestling team

manager, booster club, FFA and National Honor Society. In college she is a member of the Mathematics and Statistics Club, Spanish Club and Aspiring Educators Club.

Gonzalez works as a lifeguard at Abbey Springs, as a nanny for a local family and at the St. Patrick’s Onalaska Afterschool Care.

Her volunteer work includes various officers positions with the Sugar Creek 4-H, Walworth County Swine Committee member and DAYS Service Organization participant.

“I have shown in the swine barn from the day I became eligible and now that my ‘showing days’ are over, I look back and realize that I have really enjoyed watching the young members learning and growing as a show person,” she said. “It wasn’t always about winning the banner, it was about the relationships we built, helping the new families through the process and encouraging the younger kids to get out there and do their best.”

Jessica Nehs, 25, of Elkhorn, is the daughter of Tim and Debbie Nehs.

She is a 2014 graduate of Elkhorn Area High School and attends the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and is studying education. She hopes to teach high school agriculture and be a future FFA advisor.

Nehs works at Lakeland Little Learners as a cook, custodian and substitute teacher, and Lush Acres as a horse trainer.

Her extensive volunteer work includes helping out in Girl Scouts, 4-H, teaching Sunday school, community events, judging competitions, speaking and working with animals.

She received the Walworth County 4-H Intermediate Achievement Youth award, 4-H bronze, silver and gold membership, Shelia Degrave Memorial Scholarship and the Sugar Creek Horse, Photography, Art and Homemaker awards.

“What I love most about the fair are the delightful people that work hard to make the fair happen; the community within the fair that just can’t be replaced; and the people who work with the kids to make their fair experience a good one,” she said.
